Join Mike McGavel Jones as he interviews legendary Shelby County, TN lawman, politician, and philanthropist Bill Morris and his son Auctioneer Jeff Morris, Monday at 10 a.m. CST on Facebook Live.

I will be interviewing Bill Morris, former Sheriff of Shelby County, TN from 1964 to 1970. During his tenure as sheriff, Morris was in charge of the custody of James Earl Ray. Ray admitted while in custody to the 1968 murder of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. However, Ray later claimed he was coerced into pleading guilty.

Morris was Mayor of Shelby County from 1978 to 1994. Morris was instrumental, along with park superintendent Tom Hill, in introducing a herd of bison to Shelby Farms.

In 1994, Morris campaigned for the Democratic nomination for Governor of Tennessee, placing second in the race to Phil Bresden.

Tennessee State Route 385 in Shelby County, which was originally Nonconnah Parkway, was renamed Bill Morris Parkway.

In his autobiography published in 2019, he talks about his extraordinary life including knowing Elvis Presley and his years of helping shape Memphis, TN.

Today on the Mike McGavel Jones Show, Mike sits down with Leroy Van Dyke. Leroy was catapulted into country music fame in 1956 with his composition "The Auctioneer", co-written with Buddy Black, which sold over 2.5 million records. He wrote the song about the life of his cousin, National Auctioneers Association Hall of Famer Ray Sims, also a Missourian. Van Dyke had the lead role of a budding country music performer in the 1967 movie What Am I Bid?, in which Sims played himself as an auctioneer.

In his 50 years-plus career, Van Dyke has recorded more than 500 songs, dozens of them making the charts. His record of "Walk On By" (1961) was named by Billboard magazine in 1994 as the biggest country single of all time, based on sales, plays, and weeks in the charts. It stayed at number one in the U.S. country chart for 19 weeks, and in all, charted for 42 weeks, also reaching number five on the pop listings. It sold more than 1.5 million copies.

He is a member of the National Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame, is active in many music industry organizations, and as a sideline, raises premium quality Arabian mules.

Joshua Derden is a veteran of the United States Army Special Operations Command, serving in various roles inside the 75th Ranger Regiment. During his time as a Ranger, Josh lead fire teams, and eventually the sniper section of his company. Josh deployed six times, in support of Operation Enduring & Iraqi Freedom.

Shortly after leaving the military, Josh returned to the Middle East, serving as a Private Military Contractor in support of the US Department of State. Over the next seven years, he led security teams all over Iraq for Blackwater Securities, an American private security company, and later EODT in Afghanistan.

Once Josh returned home, it quickly became evident that many of his brothers that returned home, did not make it home complete. The daily struggle of failure to assimilate to civilian life became overwhelming for many. The battle scars are not always physically apparent, and often illustrated through addictions, anger, and violence. Several men from his unit, and contracting companies, lost the battle to PTSD and took their own lives. In February of 2016, during a time of extreme difficulty in his own life, Josh was invited to a hunt in South Texas, with several of his Special Operations brothers. Those conversations around the fire, and experiences hunting fueled a passion that directly impacts VXA veterans today.

VXA believes that through adventure, comradery and therapy, we can make a significant impact in the veteran community. We understand the extreme difficulty veterans endure to re-integrate into American society, after leaving the structured life of the military. We feel that there is a lack of resources for this group of ‘forgotten veterans’ once they make the shift from solider to civilian.
VXA embraces the “no man left behind” model, even after soldiers leave the military. Since Josh became a pillar of VXA in 2016, he has helped evolve VXA into an organization that places emphasis on building a support system surrounding each veteran vs providing a one-time handout. In 2019 alone, VXA has been able to impact the lives of over 30 combat veterans, (many of whom are purple heart recipients) by providing them with therapy, jobs, and drug and alcohol addiction rehabilitation.

There's a lot of things an old car can do. It can get you where you're going, it can help you out of a bind, and sometimes it can cost you an arm and a leg. But what you might not know is, your old car can help kids in need of second chance at an education. Hard to believe, right? Richard Marquez doesn't think so. He's been the CEO of Texans Can Academies since 2007 and today on a brand new episode of The Mike McGavel Jones Show, he's sitting down with Mike to talk about how Texans Can got started, how they're changing the education game here in the lone star state, and how Texans Can can turn that rusty old car into a bright future.

Leadership is a challenging thing. It's not easy to tell folks what's to do, and usually it's even harder to know what they're supposed to be doing in the first place. And in the age of social media, a lot of folks have opinions, but it takes a special kind of person to follow through with them. Just ask Lynn McBee. She's a seventh-generation Texan that started her career as a biochemist before becoming the CEO of Young Women's Prep. She's also a high-profile philanthropist, and a civic leader in one of Texas' biggest cities (our very own Dallas, of course). She's had her finger on the pulse of the metroplex for over 25 years. She's an eternal optimist, and what some see as problems, Lynn sees as opportunities. And today on the Mike McGavel Jones Show, she's sitting down with Mike to get to the bottom of what exactly all that means, and how she's planning to change things when she runs for Dallas Mayor next term.
