Title: New Year Resolutions - Do They Work?
Released: January 2, 2025
Featuring: Cristina Fernandez, Esq., Life Coach
Hosted by: Emy Fernandez, MBA, Life Coach
Each January, millions embrace the tradition of New Year’s resolutions, seeking a fresh start. But why do we set these goals, and why do so many of them fail? In this episode, we explore the psychology behind resolutions, common pitfalls, and strategies for success.
Resolutions represent a firm decision for change, fueled by optimism and the symbolic reset of a new year. Popular goals include weight loss, career advancement, and improving relationships. However, despite good intentions, many resolutions falter due to vague goals, unrealistic expectations, and the "all or nothing" mindset. Without a clear plan, setbacks often derail progress.
Statistics reveal a high failure rate: only 8% of people achieve their resolutions, and many abandon them by mid-January. This highlights the need to focus on small, achievable goals. Using the SMART framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) and celebrating progress can keep motivation alive. Accountability tools, social support, and self-compassion after setbacks are critical for long-term success.
For those who find resolutions too rigid, consider alternatives like setting broad intentions or choosing a theme for the year (e.g., "Growth" or "Balance"). These flexible approaches allow for adaptability and personal growth without the pressure of perfection. Remember, forming lasting habits takes time—far beyond January—and adjusting goals as needed ensures they remain effective.
Ultimately, it’s okay to forgo resolutions entirely. Reflecting on your needs without external pressure can lead to organic growth. Whether you set goals or not, the key is patience, flexibility, and self-compassion. Share your experiences with resolutions—what’s worked, what hasn’t—and join us in embracing meaningful progress this year.

Description:
This podcast has been released in celebration of our 100th Episode!
Cristina tells us the story about one of her clients, a high school student, she was coaching to help her transition from high school to college.
In preparing her personal statement, her Client used the documentary “The 100 Foot Wave” as a metaphor for life and her transition from high school to college.
For those of you that are not aware, the "100 Foot Wave" follows the journey of Garrett McNamara, a professional big-wave surfer, as he chases the dream of surfing the biggest wave in the world. The documentary captures McNamara's pursuit of monster waves, focusing on his time in Nazaré, Portugal, known for its massive and dangerous waves. It showcases the physical and mental challenges, the highs and lows, and the relentless determination needed to tackle such extraordinary feats. The documentary also highlights the broader surfing community and the impact of this quest on McNamara's life and those around him.
What this documentary meant for the Client was not surfing, but instead it was about what we do to meet the ultimate challenge.
In this documentary the lessons are not only important for a high schooler transitioning to college but anyone looking to grow and challenge themselves in life that are pursuing a passion, facing challenges and the risks and reward.
And, it's not just about checking the boxes, like the college application was asking her Client to do. Overall, "100 Foot Wave" illustrates that with passion, resilience, and support, one can overcome significant obstacles and achieve extraordinary goals, much like the journey of a high school student striving to achieve their dreams whether it be college or not.
Cristina, Gabi and Emy, share their 100 foot waves. It's not just about a one time big challenge but in life we may constantly be getting over many 100 foot waves. Many life lessons in this episode - enjoy!

As Monique explains in this podcast, some of these simple yet powerful principles can be easily incorporated into modern psychotherapeutic models.
Stay tune until the end as we close it all up with a surprise!

Natalie Ortega takes us through her path of self-discovery in her spirituality. She was raised in the Catholic faith however, as an adult she reached a crossroads in her faith. And, so her journey began with the possibility of progression into a faith that she can reconcile with.
Natalie, Lucia, and Emy also discuss Parker J. Palmer’s On the Brink Everything: Grace, Gravity and Getting Old. Each of them gives their perspective on Life, Death, and Spirituality.
Natalie also includes her ideas and notions about faith and doing it her way as she says below:
“Specifically, reading On the Brink, allowed me to realize that it was natural if Christianity’s Christology didn’t square with my thinking, and similarly that it was okay if I took in tenants from other religious beliefs and philosophies and excluded the ones that didn’t sit well with me. And although for decades I was irked that I couldn’t quite say that my faith was strong, now I see that whether it is strong or weak is not necessarily the point. Even if its ebb looks like overturned mountain peaks and its flow is minimal progression, the idea is that embracing the process itself IS the PRIZE. That is the actual “progression”!

She works with both moms that work inside and outside the home. Anastasiya talks with Emy about her processes and techniques with her clients. They discuss how they work with moms on how to say no and put themselves first. Anastasiya explains how moms go out and buy all the books on parenting. This episode is about how creating boundaries actually brings people together. We thought it was important to discuss boundaries as more therapists are doing teletherapy and more people are working from home. We discuss boundaries between clients and therapists, between clients and coaches, and between the therapists (and coaches) and their families. When are you a therapist or a coach outside of the office?
We hope this episode of The Counseling Corner offers all of you some insights and ideas on how, and especially during this odd time in the world, we can create boundaries between family, friends, and neighbors that won’t pull us further apart but instead bring us together.

Today’s topic is Tapping. Mirta explains how this technique is very beneficial for treating single incident trauma events in a very short period of time. It’s a great technique to use on frontline personnel, including firefighters, police, medical personnel. It’s a technique that anyone can learn how to use. Gabi and Nicole Herdocia-Oria, MFT dive into the perfect timing conundrum for big life events. When is the right time for life events like dating, marriage, and babies? How do we work through the anxieties driven up by pressure from others – and ourselves.
They discuss issues that come up with partners. Gabi talks about her own experiences as a 30-year-old and no current partner. How to deal with the “Where are the babies?”, “Where is the ring?”, “Where is the boyfriend?” questions.
Nikki, as a young mother of two, discusses the pressures of feeling like she has to have more kids and how these pressures in life never end. They also discuss how they also contribute to the “Where’s the ring?” and “Where’s the baby?” discourse.
This episode is for you wherever and whoever you are in your life. And, wherever you are, you will recognize the perfect timing conversation between Gabi and Nikki.
Both Nikki and Gabi are therapists at Coral Gables Counseling Center and they both work with individuals and couples. Also, Nikki works with couples on parenting issues. You can visit their pages on our website at:

As therapists, Kristen and Gabi explore what self-harm entails. What it is and what it isn’t. The population that it covers. They also discuss how parents can talk with their kids about self-harm. What are the signs?
This episode was a learning process for both me (Emy) and Gabi. Hopefully, you too will learn from Kristen, as we did.

In this episode, our co-host and Marriage Family Therapist, Gabi Reyes, leads the conversation with Jenny Friedman, LCSW, also from Coral Gables Counseling Center and Dr. Eugenio Duarte, Psychoanalyst and Clinical Psychologist.

Although Veronica and Gabi discuss this topic as mental health providers, Veronica also speaks from personal experience.
This episode is for anyone that is caught between the LGBT and non-LGBT community, or just has a friend or family member they want to understand more.
In this episode host Gabi and Dr. Todd Giardina discuss how although love is important in a relationship and it’s exciting and it’s great…it’s not enough because you need to use your head in addition to your heart.
Listen in as they teach you how to bring logic into your relationship to make it more long-lasting.
Gabi and Emy, the co hosts of The Counseling Corner, partner up once again to record. This time they talk about coping with the holiday stress from a wellness coach’s perspective and a mental health professional’s perspective.
Listen in as they take turns giving simple tips and information on coping with the end of the year holiday stress.
In this episode 29, Gabi and Emy, the two co-hosts, discuss work life balance and the traps that the illusion of “work life balance” creates. They offer some ideas on how to set up a “work day balance” instead by planning your day and having the freedom to make adjustments to you day so it doesn’t feel so off scale.
Emy discusses how she’s learning how to say no by getting on Marie Forleo’s “no train.” Emy explains how women attorneys have a problem of over promising and over delivering instead of under promising and over delivering. So they end up scheduling unrealistic deadlines.

Gabi and one of our new therapists, Carlos Escanilla, LMHC, record a fun episode as Carlos brings his guitar into the recording room.
Carlos, a therapist by day and musician by night, discusses how he uses music in therapy. Gabi, whose family are actors, musicians and radio show host enjoys herself with Carlos as they explore music and its therapeutic uses.
At the end of this episode, we have a nice surprise for our listeners so listen through to the end.
Do you remember what it was like your first day of school and especially – the first day of middle school?
Go back down memory lane as Emy sits with her grandson, Jaden Navarro as he describes his first day of middle school and how he feels now, 4 months later. This episode is great whether or not you have a middle schooler because Emy goes in depth about life in general with Jaden. She explores her grandson’s life in school, they talk about girls in middle school, video games, bullying, and even how a boy of 12 destresses and decompresses in the 21st century. Hint: very much like adults do.
Sit down and listen to the golden nuggets coming from the mouth of a babe for a lesson in life.
Enjoy!

In this episode, Veronica Sanchez, LCSW from Coral Gables Counseling Center joins us as she recounts her experience as a new mom of twins and all the happiness but also the trials of not only being a new mom but a new mom of twins. For them to know that issues they may be struggling with are the norm and not the exception.
This episode is not only for new moms and for moms-to-be so they know “what to expect when they’re expecting,” but also for families so they know how to navigate around a new mom.

This is a very, very different podcast than our usual. Today we have a family on the podcast telling their story of their experiences as cancer survivors and as caregivers. Lucia Fernandez Silveira, LMFT and Director of Coral Gables Counseling Center, was a caregiver for both her daughter, Cristina and her sister Emy.
Cristina Nicole Fernandez, Esq., is a Family Lawyer and the Divorce Coach here at the Coral Gables Counseling Center and Lucia’s daughter. Emy Fernandez, is the co-host of The Counseling Corner and the Life and Wellness Coach at the Center. Both Cristina and Emy are cancer survivors. Also, Emy was a caregiver for their mother, who was also diagnosed with cancer at the same time that Cristina was.
Listen in as they share their story and their tips on how they overcame this very difficult time. You will want to not only listen in but also share this episode with family and friends who may be going – or went - through cancer or lived through it as a caregiver.

For this episode we did something a little different. One of our clients, Jessica, volunteered to be on this podcast. She wants to “normalize therapy” as she puts it. She feels therapy is something everyone should do.
Jessica, sat with Gabriela Reyes (Gabi), The Counseling Corner co-host and a therapist herself here at Coral Gables Counseling Center. Being on both ends of therapy, Gabi has conducted a wonderful and fun, yes fun, interview with Jessica, as they explore therapy.
