Isabel Hülya Ergül has lived a life of music from a very young age. She is classically trained as an choir singer and has progressed to become a powerful director of Antalya, Türkiye's own Choro Canzonetta; an international group of ameteur signers who love music and sing in multiple languages. I was extremely blessed to be a part of this group and perform in two concerts and my eternal thanks go to Isabel for her guidance and mentorship on improving my voice and trusting in me to tackle not only one, but two solos. Her story is inspirational and her voice will bring you to tears. It's something we need as human beings." - Sofia ZolezziChilean visual artist Sofia Zolezzi has had a lifetime to prepare for her relatively new art career. From studying art at a young age to playing around in the art realm for most of her upbringing, she took a left turn somewhere along the way to become an engineer, then a mother and a teacher. But she was left unsatisfied in her engineering and even teaching career and with the support and encouragement of her husband, decided in 2020 to dive into art full-time. She began painting in earnest and to-date has had the incredible good fortune to have her work shown in galleries in seven countries across the world. Her art is whimsical, colorful abstractions that resonate with her positive energy and will brighten up any room.We are so thrilled to also welcome Sofia as the latest addition to the Art Unknown Store. Janet Dossigny is a well traveled, deeply spiritual creative who spent part of her adult life in the painting business. House painting that is. Though not traditionally thought of an artistic endeavor, painting houses taught her much about the use of brushes and application processes which has translated well into her future artistic career. Janet has also taken her spirituality to a deeper experience and currently lives at the Peace Theological Seminary and studies a practice called Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness (MSIA). Her practice in spirit has transitioned into her art as Janet attempts to translate her meditative journeys onto paper and canvas. This presents a perfect opportunity to embrace a new calling and explore a second passion. Laura Viola Preciado did just that. She went back to school with designs on being a nurse practitioner, but somewhere along the way, she found her inner artist. With coaxing from respected teachers and incredible support from her husband, Laura embarked on her journey to art school. After her studies she moved to Whidbey Island just across from Seattle on Puget Sound and began working on her craft. Represented through a local gallery and becoming involved in the local art scene has helped Laura expand her skills and hone her craft.We are extremely pleased to have an assortment of Laura's work on the Art Unknown Store. After a lifetime of service and leadership in multiple industries, Suzanne Frazier rediscovered her artistic roots. A few classes in art led to a full blown fine art degree- 20 years after she finished college the first time. With a huge shift in her life, Suzanne embraced her artistic calling and went on to perfect what she call her contemplative process- creating art through a meditative awakening and a contemplation of one's connectedness to the world around them. She began to teach classes in her unique style and to this day enjoys sharing her wisdom with other seekers and creatives. This interview is a deep dive into the contemplative art form and we are grateful for Suzanne sharing her lifetime of experiences and wisdom. With a fruitful medical practice as an orthopedic surgeon, John Bacon really had no reason to become an artist. But while on vacation and at the urging of his wife, they took a painting class together and he found a love for putting paint to canvas. He decided to pursue life as an artist as he was heading toward retirement from medicine. Making the wise choice to take a course on painting, Dr. Bacon grew in his depth and knowledge of color in ways that can be experienced through his wild abstractions. Having his art represented in galleries across Europe has given him as much pleasure as spending hours in his studio creating the art. Ever the artist, and not wasting the years of study, Germen infuses his architectural sensibility in much of his work, in documenting the cities he finds himself in and even in the way he displays his art. As an international artist, Germen loves to collaborate when creating exhibitions and we at the Art Unknown Podcast are honored to be welcomed into this collaborative conversation.

For Angel Espino, such an encounter awakened a desire deep within. A desire to paint; to express his emotions through art. The encounter was with an original Picasso piece and Angel was so taken by the experience that he decided to work on his own creative process. His journey has taken him almost 10 years and he is now on the cusp of realizing his dream of being a full-time artist. When he took up painting, Angel had a good, steady job, but it was a job that allowed him the time to explore and develop those artistic skills. While he didn't quit his "day job" Angel was very strategic about getting his work in front of people who would either help promote him and assisted in putting his work in front of buyers. He pours his emotions into the canvasses, but even in the dark times, he transfers that to a positive light; a beacon for others to enjoy and be memorized by the colors and fluidity of his creations. Angel is also a huge supporter of others and uses his art as a way to raise money and give back to many charitable organizations. We at the Art Unknown Podcast have been extremely fortunate to follow Angel's work from his very first gallery show almost 10 years ago. After a time our soul yearns for something more, or maybe just a different path. Visual artist Jesse Doyle has lived that very experience. After high school and some time in college, he decided the military would give him a sense of purpose and direction. Upon completing his time in the Marines, he entered into security work, as many in the armed services do. While he enjoyed the job, it wasn't as fulfilling as he liked. Fortunately, he was working on a practice to free his mind from the conflicts of military life and found both meditation and art. Today Jesse works as a full-time artist. Creating his art in a meditation-like zen state, with purpose and with love, he finds the practice feeds his soul. And, his clients are as drawn to his work as is his heart in creating them. As one who thinks deeply about the art he creates Jesse also has found an audience in sharing his art. With over 400 pieces sold in just a few years, he has already established himself as an authoritative force in the art world. They say the best things in life often come in threes. As an artist, Mary Bue is more like three times three, and maybe times three again. She was a paid musician from an extremely young age and she knew while she was still a teenager that her musical journey would be her profession. So few artists these days have that kind of clarity as a youth. Yet, for Mary, it has served her well. She puts her heart and soul into her songwriting and her music. Her stories become our stories and we find ourselves relating to her trials and tribulations as if they were our own. She draws strength and calm from her practice as a yogi and yoga teacher and finds rejuvenation when escaping to the wilds of nature. As a multi-dimensional artist, she has added the paintbrush to her large repertoire of instrument mastery; with her voice, piano, guitar, harmonica, and sitar, being just a few. Based out of Minniapolis, MN she received "Best Songwriter" award in 2020 by City Pages, and while awards and accolades fill her with gratitude this artist is not stopping anytime soon. As an advocate for women's rights, she has lent her voice and music to the #MeTooMPLS 2020 album. With a West Coast tour and her ninth studio album releasing soon, Mary Bue's music is a tour de force worth spending some time with.

In the case of Kelly Marie, aka Messy Ever After, it is a person who lives and breathes art in its many forms, every day. As a young creative, she was selling drawings to family friends at age 6. Fast forward through high school where she dabbled with creative writing, then to college where she decided on a traditional career path, only to be drawn back into the world of art. Being an artist is something that we sometimes need to lean into and Kelly has leaned in hard. In 2016 she left her corporate job and fully embraced life as an artist. This interview takes us into her mind as an introspective human, a business person, and an artist. Making art in all its forms is what Messy Ever After is all about.

Work!" - Steven Dossou As a person growing up in a country without a lot of what we in the West would consider to be privilege; Steven Dossou has found a way to spread his message, his passion, and his influence to a world much larger than himself. In this podcast episode we talk about his humble beginnings, his struggle of leaving his home at the age of 18 and traveling across several countries, by foot, to reach South Africa, only to have his true journey of trial and tribulation begin. He has mastered the art of communication and made transformation a cornerstone of his very being. Becoming a successful salesman, then speaker and author, Dossou is now spreading his message to a world much larger than he could have ever imagined growing up in a two-bedroom house in Togo, Africa. He shares a great deal of wisdom and perspective and is a voice very much worth listening to. Steven Dossou is the definition of determination and he is truly living his passion, his dharma, his calling upon this great planet we call Earth.

The ability to take one on a journey through the expansion of their own understanding of the world around them is a gift. Lo remembered this lesson as she embarked on her educational career through film school in the United States. She has embraced such a gift and has been making it her own through short films that have explored multiple facets of the human condition. Lo has shifted her attention to man's most trusted companion for her first full-length feature documentary. Stray is perhaps the most intimate portrait of the life of dogs that we have seen yet. It is the story of street dogs in Istanbul, Turkey, and how they live freer than canines most anywhere else in the world. Turkey has adopted a no-capture, no-kill policy with street dogs (and cats) as they are taken care of by the residents of each community. The animals live freely among humans, fed by the residents in the communities in which they live, and are even given veterinary care paid for by the government. They are well acclimated to people and are not only not aggressive as a rule, but are friendly and will welcome a pat on the head or scratch behind the ear. With minimal dialogue and a soundtrack by acclaimed composer Ali Helnwein, Stray does a commanding job of capturing the life of these dogs as they go about their business, free to follow whatever whim fits their fancy. Made even more engaging, the movie is also filmed mostly from a dog's point of view and even the audio frequencies were raised to a level more attuned to what a dog would hear. I implore everyone to watch this incredible film. We can all take a page from Turkey and its treatment of street animals. If you are ever in doubt of whether dogs can live freely among humans your answers will be found in the movie Stray.

She was raised by English and American parents and while she enjoys her tea-time, Anna is never more content than with a brush in hand and paint on her clothes. With art instilled in her from a young age, she went from musician to poet to actor, and finally landing on visual artist. Graduating with a degree in the arts in 2011, Anna set out to take over Chicago and worked her way through the many jobs that an artist may take until being able to dive full-time into her artistic endeavors. She has been a working artist for several years now and moved from canvas to concrete as she has taken to doing large murals in and around Chicago. Even during COVID times she found work in collaboration and painted two large collaborative murals. Drawing strength from the power of nature and empowered by the feminine goddess, Anna Murphy will surely continue her tapestry of art throughout the world. It's that thing we can all connect over." - Cole Scheifele As a young up-and-coming musician, Cole Scheifele (shife lee) may inhabit the body of a young 20-something, but his folk music emanates from a very old soul. He is deep and reflective and his prose will get inside your head. His desire to break into the music scene was hit head-on by the COVID-19 pandemic so Cole did what any enterprising musician might do; he decided to cut an album. With a five-song EP under his belt, Cole set out to get the long-standing melodies and lyrics out of his head and into a form that might resonate with others. Over this past year, he has worked hard to develop and expand his musical style and partnered with many accomplished musicians that helped him realize his aspirations to create a full-length album. His first track "All the While" opens and closes this podcast episode and we are very excited for the upcoming release of his first full-length album, The Hideaways. In the meantime, check out his 2019 EP, Everything Matters, Nothing Matters at All wherever you listen to your music.

We also discuss the impact of COVID-19 on Jensen's career and the shift he made during the shutdown to continue working. Jensen utilized his downtime from behind the shutter to organize his celebrity portraits and published the coffee table book Five Feet From Greatness. Not only is it a great way to showcase and share his past work, he wisely is using his book as a marketing tool, to remind his clients he is out there, ready to get back to work as COVID leaves us. Patricia McInroy is all of these, but none truly describe her. I personally was honored to take classes from her when I went back to finish my college degree and she has taught and mentored countless students before and after. Currently, as an adjunct professor at the Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design in Denver, Colorado, Patricia brings with her a wealth of knowledge and just the right amount of outside the box thinking that makes for a very special kind of educator. Cutting her photographic teeth in photojournalism, Patricia's sense of story has translated well to her video work. She has won numerous awards for her documentaries and her shorts have been shown across the country from Wyoming to New York City and even across the globe as part of the Cannes Film Festival in their documentary shorts series. She is truly a master of her craft and her students around the world have all been elevated from her teachings.

Subscribe: iTunes | Android | Spotify | Email | RSS "Art is basic human language." - Aaron Burris-DeBoskey, Lé Secret What do you get when you combine the talents of three very accomplished musicians onto a stage where anything goes? We'd tell you, but it's Lé Secret. Aaron Burris-DeBoskey brings the guitar with a plethora of pedals to transform, modulate and otherwise alter every note that comes from his strings. Add in Jakey Wherry on what can be loosely defined as keyboard and synthesizer. The sheer volume of wires and plugs indicates that his instrument is so much more. And finally, add in a percussionist of the first caliber in Chris Hewitt. His job is not the traditional timekeeping role of a drummer, but more of a lead, fill and follow type of role. In fact the three all take turns leading, then eventually going off on their own while one of the other picks up the rhythm or more often than not pushes through with their own disjointed musical cadence. At times, the third member is off on their own journey, completely ignoring the other two, neither leading nor following. This, friends is improvisational noise music. Coming together through a shared love of Balinese gamelan Aaron, Chris, Jakey and I got to sit down and chat about music and the arts before a live audience. We are so thrilled and thankful to our friends at The Mercury Cafe in Denver, Colorado for hosting this live episode of the podcast. And we want to thank those again who came out to support the arts and to enjoy what can only be described as Lé Secret.

Leaving a home in Aspen, Colorado to study yoga teacher training in Costa Rica would be just the first in what has become a lifetime of listening to her heart's desire and making big moves to fulfill those dreams. From yoga she moved into the air and studied aerial performance, becoming an expert in several different styles. As a constant in her life, her aerial practice led her back to Denver and to a community desperate for a teacher and a leader. She now brings together the talents of both world class teachers and eager students with a passion to learn the aerial arts. As co-owner of Circus Collective she has given a home to those who fly. She has also opened that home to those who keep their feet closer to the ground in Ecstatic Dance, a clean and sober dance party where community and dance are at the heart of the experience. Never one to slow down, Air has most recently taken on the roll of producer for the Denver edition of Daybreaker. In 2002 he founded the record label Bmakin Music. Born in Maine, Ben grew up in California, Washington and Oklahoma before graduating high school in Colorado. Seeing Miles Davis perform live three times and then meeting the Dalai Lama in person forever changed the way Ben would approach the art of music. As a drummer and percussionist, he has been touring the world as a sideman since 1985 with r&b, funk and rock bands, jazz trios and big bands, avant-garde electronica ensembles, in Broadway shows, on international cruise ships, and with opera troupes and symphonic orchestras. (From Ben Makinen website bio.) Ben has also expanded his artistry into photography and video. He creates and shares stories from the depths of his own mind as well as collaborating with other artists to share their stories with the world. In developing an ever expanding repertoire of music and video Ben Makinen is a true artist in every sense.

These are apt descriptions of what someone might experience when spending time with the master works of visual artists and live painters Morgan Mandala & Randal Roberts. Both are incredibly talented as individuals, though together they have become a fantastically successful team, finding their niche and finding their fans. Growing up in vastly different parts of the country, yet walking a similar road, Morgan and Randal's development of their art careers has been the typical artist struggle. A decision to live one's life as a professional working artist is always the first step. Shed a healthy dose of blood, sweat and the requisite amount of tears and eventually the universe will align to show you the way. Be it a mentor, a partner, or even divine guidance, there will be breakthroughs and magic will be created. The art of Morgan Mandala and Randal Roberts is proof that the universe can align and success is embracing the divine.

It started with the music, then a trip to Bali and culminated with me joining a premier Balinese gamelan group, one with an incredible history and a promising future. Gamelan came to Denver, Colorado thirty years ago in what would become Gamelan Tunas Mekar (GTM). Throughout its three decade history the group has seen more than one hundred members come and go and today there are only 3 members still active from those early days. The group is as strong as ever however thanks in part not only the incredibly talented musicians but for the fact that our teacher and guru Pak Made Lasmawan has been with the group for most of those thirty years. In fact the GTM is held together by the glue of his family. His wife is the principle dancer and choreographer and his three sons also play and write music for the group. The community of Gamelan Tunas Mekar remains stronger than ever with a recent invitation to the Bali Arts Festival and the Karangasem Art and Culture Festival. This collection of two dozen extremely talented musicians is spending two weeks touring in Bali in the summer of 2019, and I am incredibly honored be a part of that journey. - Jim Wills This podcast was recorded at a live concert fundraiser. "Art is the expression of human creativity" - Andrew Clark We live in a world of dichotomy. As our human consciousness expands, the world itself becomes a smaller and smaller place. Lines are blurred and nations dissolve into one another. We as a species are only just beginning to understand just how interconnected we all are. The same can be said for photography. Ever since the advent of digital, the business of photography of has changed and blurred almost as fast as the upgrade cycle of the iPhone. Andrew Clark is a man who pivoted his life's passion into a career and then, eventually found himself ahead of the curve in the world of professional photography. As a pro wedding, portrait and commercial photographer, Andrew has emerged as a master in his field. He first recognized and embraced the shift to digital and again as digital blurred the lines between still images and video. His work has taken him across the globe and he has a very keen perspective on what one requires to be the very best in their art.

Focus on Yourself and Follow Your Heart - Okuda San Miguel Talking with him today, you would never know that Episode 28's Okuda San Miguel came from a modest upbringing in northern Spain. Nor would you think him a pretentious modern-day master, though a master he certainly is. Yet his talent is as much about his business acumen as his artistic skill. He has struggled just like the rest, but he surrounded himself with a team of people who continue to support him today as he spreads his unique surrealistic vision around the world. From a graffiti artist who studied fine art, Okuda has created a style recognizable almost at first glance. For his recent solo exhibition at Mirus Gallery in Denver, Colorado Okuda explores the reality of human incursion on a modern day paradise with the surrealistic beings of his imagination. Though his work can literally be found all over the planet, he has remained extremely humble and grateful of the gifts he has been able to share with the world.

Living the life of a successful artist and living the life of a talented artist are not mutually exclusive. Nor are either a guarantee for anyone pursuing the arts. With a background that began on the engineering side of life, Jim Wills shifted his focus as a young adult toward the life of an artist. But he wanted the life of both a talented and successful artist. Without knowing it, he found it. In photography, in acting, in journalism, in this very podcast. Along the journey he has taken a deep dive into personal development and learned that he would have to drastically change the way he thought in order to change his life. Tom also shares his understanding of what it means to critique one's work and gives an excellent breakdown of the four steps to a great critique. For Tom Finke life is about enjoying the present but not forgetting the past.
He is a celebrated author, and is currently working on several photographic series including "Quiet Spaces" and "The Wire." Both of which may very well be found in future editions of the Tom Finke library of books.

In fact, she just enjoyed creating art because it made her feel good. As she continued to develop her style, she saw others smile too. Insua began to deepen her practice by finding meaning and purpose behind her creations. She began to show in a few exhibitions around Buenos Aires drawing more and more attention to her artistry. Utilizing discarded items that are no longer useful to a throw away society, she methodically creates new life in the found objects. For her most recent solo exhibition at the Appa Art Gallery in Madrid, Spain, Insua created a series based on western consumption and the backwards idea that things create happiness. Her work is both beautiful and tragic. Dazzling to behold, yet a stark reminder of our endless grasp at material bliss. Elisa Insua will be showing her work in Madrid & Caracus in September 2018, the London Art Fair in October '18 and Paris in December '18.

Fortunately for Spok Brillor this time was also the birth of tagging, bombing and other forms of graffiti that have since turned street art into a legitimate form in Spain. Madrid, like many European cities, is battling graffiti in the streets, and yet street art is alive and well. Spok is one of the artists who have helped validate the worthiness of the art form by earning a living as a street artist; painting the style of art that he once created at night and in the shadows, running from the law. Since those early rebellious days, Spok has painted works all over the world in almost every continent. He is as comfortable in a gallery as well and shows in many locations throughout Europe. Represented by Ink and Movement Studios in Madrid, Spok Brillor is a rising international talent. Keep your eyes open, and you might find Spok's work on a wall near you. You can see Spok Brillor's work at a group exhibition in September 2018 at the Galería Kreisler in Madrid and in October in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA.

Some of us much more than others. At times one finds themselves dismissed from their family because they don't fit into the traditional, comfortable box of the family's morality. Jen Harris experienced this first hand as she tried to identify her place in a gay, lesbian, queer life. This conflict within herself and within her very traditional midwest family led to an early path in adulthood that one might expect. Drugs, alcohol, and a despondent sense of confusion and betrayal. Fortunately Jen was able to pour out the booze and pour her soul into writing, and subsequently performing her poetry. She has since shared her art all over the country, inspiring others who find themselves in similarly painful and confusing times. This podcast is real, and it's raw, and we get down to the nitty gritty of what it truly means to share one's deepest, darkest demons as a way of stepping out into the light of love and life.

Other times, the pull is so strong, that the artists realize together is better than apart. This is the core essence of Desert Dwellers. Treavor Moontribe and Amani Friend were both skilled in their creative outlets before they met. Treavor, a DJ born out of the metal and then rave scenes, was a founding member of the L.A. Moontribe Collective. Amani brought his years of musicianship to create a sound born in the desert. Touring the festival circuit has brought legions of fans and followers. Tapping into world music and sounds from nature along with forging new sub-genres of electronic music has given Desert Dwellers a unique sound that effortlessly transitions from dance to deep meditations and back again.

For the artist simply known as Symon, he created his existence the way he wanted from an early age. A life of art was his calling. Symon has dedicated himself to capturing and sharing the beauty that breathes through the nirvana that he has birthed in Symon's Art Zoo. Part outdoor sculpture garden, part museum, part artist retreat, the Art Zoo is unlike anything encountered in the West. To spend an hour with the wonderfully colorful human that is Symon is unlike any interview I've yet to have. He is as eccentric as he is brilliant and his talent is evidenced throughout the Zoo in the idyllic paradise that is Bali, Indonesia.

Fast forward thirteen years and the company has grown into Denver-based Ink Monstr, a full service print shop creating large vinyl wraps, apparel and yes, lots of stickers. Reed shares his thoughts on pursuing excellence, what it takes to become a successful leader; in art or in business and how being named Colorado's Small Business Person of the Year has opened doors and created opportunities he never thought possible.

"Find something within yourself that you want to express." - Lisa Calzavara Transformative is a word that comes to mind when thinking about the work and growth of visual artist Lisa Calzavara. Her work has evolved drastically over the years as she has continued to grow and transform both her technique and style. Going from a full-time mother to a full-time artist has been a long journey of study and practice, and was only possible with the support of her family along the journey. Lisa is a student of the arts, and a lover of the outdoors. She has found a way to combine both of these passions in creating an ever-growing body of landscapes, abstracts and other work, both in 2D and in breathtaking 3D sculptures. "Whomever wants it the most will find a way to get around their walls." - Isaiah Naranjo Intense. That one word perfectly describes Episode 12. Recently, I had the great opportunity to record several podcasts at the Art Institute of Colorado's audio engineering studio. In this, the first of these episodes, I sat down with the portfolio class of the school's Audio Engineering program. We spoke on what it means to be a student in a non-traditional arts program, the struggles that everyone goes through to see a dream through, and we enjoyed words of wisdom from class instructor Dan Buckley and Jay Peteranetz, the Program Chair for the school's Media Arts & Animation Program. "Find your right path and passion and go for it." - Kara Duepre Many people living in today's world often feel stuck. Stuck in a job they didn't plan on, or worse yet, don't really want to be in. People often get caught up in the trappings of what it means to "have a good life." Get a good education. Get a good job. Find a good partner. The list goes on and on. All too often we slide down the slope of working to pay for the life we think we should have instead of the living a life of passion. We bury those passions deep inside until the fire that they once fueled is nothing but a barely glowing coal. This podcast series is about re-igniting that passion, and none has done it better than our Episode 11 guest Kara Duepre. She started climbing the corporate ladder only to find that was not where she wanted to be. So she took the leap that many are afraid to take. She listened to her heart and followed her passion. "Art is something we really need in this society." - Sarah Rockett Art of any kind can be subjective. A play, a tune, a film, a painting, a sculpture. The creator may have an underlying intention, but often, the viewer is allowed to create their own narrative, their own decisions on the piece. But art is meant to record life, to stir emotions, to create conversations. Sarah Rockett knows all too well the intended meaning of her work. She understands the subjective nature of each piece, and yet she pulls the strings of dialogue regardless of the viewer. Her latest series is on the of subject wealth and the price put on materialism. The value of objects that were once considered trash, now elevated into 'art'. The saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure" has never been more apropos than when contemplating this work. As a resident artist at Redline Contemporary Art Center and an adjunct professor of the arts Sarah has immersed herself into the world of the artist; student and teacher, creator and observer. The Art of Ballooning Sometimes we find a passion that ends up becoming all consuming. At the very least, we dive in deeper than we ever planned. The art of ballooning is a passion that took hold of Steve Hunter over 30 years ago. He went from becoming a balloon pilot to balloon maker. His passion has led him to fly balloons all over the western United States and even in Australia and Mexico. Steve has even served as "Balloon Meister" for 12 years at the Erie Town Fair and Balloon Festival in Erie, Colorado, held each May. Unfortunately as adults, most of us either have forgotten of given up on those childhood dreams. The theory continues to state that if we return to those youthful aspirations we will find our true purpose, our dharma. Some of us are fortunate enough to have listened to our childhood voice.
