The Government reports that over 250 US military veterans have been placed in immigration removal proceedings in the last 6 years. With support by the Pulitzer Center, WBEZ reporter Maria Ines Zamudio spoke with more than a dozen of US veterans currently residing in Tijuana as they try to raise awareness of their situation, find ways to return home to their families, and gain access to health services for military veterans. A report titled "The Plunder of Black Wealth in Chicago: New Findings on the Lasting Toll of Predatory Housing Contracts" found that Black families in Chicago lost between 3 and 4 billion of dollars in wealth because of said contracts during the 1950s and 60s. The new film, BEING FRANK takes us back to 1992 where a young man named Philip is in the throes of teen angst. His dreams are dashed when his overbearing father, Frank, played by Jim Gaffigan, forbids his son from venturing out on his own. But Frank's anger at rebellion is hypocritcal since Frank is out here doing dirty his own self. The film’s director, Miranda Bailey, and the titular Frank: Jim Gaffigan joined Jill in the studio to talk about the film that out in theaters now.
With a cast of nearly 100 artists and musicians, the Lyric's production of West Side Story brings new energy and scale to the iconic musical that transports Shakespeare's story of Romeo and Juliet to the back streets of New York City. The increase of abortion ban bills across the country is posing a threat to Roe v. Wade. Alabama, Georgia and Ohio are among the latest conservative states to pass such bills at the State House level in hopes of taking it all the way to the the Supreme Court. But folks here in Illinois are working to advance and protect access to reproductive health, and the Reproductive Health Act (RHA) is currently being stalled in the Illinois State House. The "Intersex Justice Project" was started by activists Pidgeon Pagonis and Sean Saifa Wall to highlight the discriminatory and harmful medical practices of intersex surgeries and demand the end to these practices. Intersex surgeries are condemned by many human rights organizations but they are performed on children in the USA and around the world. Jill Hopkins spoke with Pidgeon and Saifa about their campaign as well as a protest action taking place Friday, May 3rd. Damon Young is a writer, a cultural critic, a co-founder of Very Smart Brothas, and one of the most prominent Black voices on the internet. His first book is a memoir called "What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Blacker." It is a collection of personal essays that reflect on the angst and the absurdities of life as a Black man in modern-day America. Damon spoke with Jill Hopkins on The Morning AMp about some of those personal experiences, and what made the time right to write this book.

Lois MacMillan is a Master Teacher with the Gilder Lerhman Institute of American History, a Grammy award-winning educator, and the Senior Education Fellow for the Hamilton Education Program - better known as #Eduham.

Chicago municipal elections took place on February 26th and the results were nothing but historic. Two Black women came in as the front runners in the race to become the next Mayor. Lori Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle will face each other in a run off on Tuesday, April 2nd, and one will become the first Black female Mayor of Chicago. Tiffany Walden of Chicago media platform The Triibe joined Jill Hopkins on the AMp to discuss the voting results for each of 14 Mayoral candidates across the city's Wards, as well as what challenges each of the two front runners will face leading up to the run off.

It's election day in Chicago, and today the city residents will be able to cast their votes for Mayor, City Clerk and Treasurer and Alderman. The Voting Rights Project is an initiative of Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights. Their Election Protection Hotline (866-OUR-VOTE) is available to help citizens report voting access issues and problems at their polling places, and they have some useful tips for voters on this election day. Jenny Terrell is an Attorney with CLCCR who's coordinating the Election Protection volunteers on election day and will be stationed at the call center throughout the day. Jill Hopkins spoke with Jenny about some of the issues that voters have been dealing with at polling places and how their trained VRP volunteers can help resolved them. Voting is open until 7 PM today.
Chicago’s municipal elections are tomorrow, February 26. Most Chicagoans are still undecided, and a crowded pool of candidates give voters a range of choices from connected establishment folks to progressive newcomers.

The Museum of Contemporary Photography (MoCP) is the world’s premier college art museum dedicated to photography and was founded in 1976 by Columbia College Chicago. They began collecting in the early 1980s and has since grown the collection to include more than 15,000 objects by over 1,500 artists.
Their newest exhibit, "Stateless: Views of Global Migration" explores forced migration and the refugee crisis through photography, video and multimedia installations. Natasha Egan, the Executive Director of MoCP and the curator of this exhibit, spoke with Jill Hopkins about the urgency of the exhibit and the artists she's selected to be represented. This week marks the 46th anniversary of the monumental Roe v Wade Supreme Court ruling, which made abortion legal nationwide. To mark the occasion Jill Hopkins spoke with Jennifer Welch, the President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Illinois (PPIL) about the organization's 2019 initiatives, and Gov. JB Pritzker's recent vow to make Illinois the most progressive state in the nation when it comes to reproductive health. Jovante Cunningham is a former backup dancer for R. Kelly who alleged she witnessed the R&B star having sex with a then-15-year--old Aaliyah on a crowded tour bus. She shared her story in the dream hampton produced docu-series, and is sticking to it, even after Aaliyah's mother denied the episode occurred. Jovante joined Jill Hopkins on the AMp to talk about the documentary and the importance of speaking out.

Molly and Jasmine both portray two of the four spirits that assist Scrooge with his path to redemption and forgiveness.
Eric Storm and Sarah Joyce, the co-founders for GlitterGuts, joined Jill on The Morning Amp to discuss their organization's 10th anniversary, and what's in store to celebrate this milestone. Delia Kropp, an actor, director, and transgender advocate joined Jill Hopkins in the studio to promote two projects essential to fighting back against the trans erasure begun by this presidential administration. TRANS SCRIPTS has its premiere Chicago reading, at Theatre Wit for About Face Theatre, November 18, at 5 pm. This is a rare stage event for Chicago audiences: seven trans women’s tales told entirely in their own words – and brought to life exclusively by transgender actors. LANDLOCKED tells the story of Nick, who reunites with his estranged, transgender father to scatter his mother's ashes off the coast of Georgia. Set against the backdrop of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, LANDLOCKED subtly and thoughtfully examines the Evangelical church's tenuous relationship with marginalized communities as dramatized through the fraught family dynamics of Nick and Briana.

Founded and established for and by post incarcerated and marginalized Black people in Chicago, Equity And Transformation strives to uplift the faces, voices, and power of the vast disenfranchised and excluded Black workforce in Chicago. Founder Richard Wallace spoke with Jesse Menendez about E.A.T.'s initiative and upcoming events.
Chicago Foundation for Women (CFW) recently released the second edition of its annual Report on the Status of Chicago’s Women and Girls. The report uses 2016 data from the U.S. Census and Illinois Department of Public Health to track the Chicago region’s progress towards gender equity. Kyle Ann Sebastian, with Chicago Foundation for Women joins the Amp to talk about the report.
On November 6th, Illinoisans will decide on a number of offices including who will be the state’s next Comptroller, Secretary of State, Attorney General, Governor and more. Two Black police officers patrol the notorious neighborhood on Chicago’s long-neglected south-east side known to locals as “Terror Town.” As veteran cops who “happen to be Black”, these men must navigate the streets, the policies of policing, and the deeply conflicted roles that they play in the lives of those that they are supposed to “serve and protect.” Set in 2016, these officers find themselves at ground zero when long-suppressed evidence surfaces (via the media) illuminating an officer involved shooting on the very streets that they patrol. Jesse Menendez spoke with playwright Shepsu Aakhu about the play and the circumstances that spawned it.

Greg Foster-Rice, curator of The Many Hats of Ralph Arnold Exhibit, spoke with Jesse Menendez about the new art display and gave information on its opening. The exhibit tells the story of Ralph Arnold, a gay African-American veteran who expressed his views on gender, sexuality, race, and politics through collage art in the 1960's-80's. "Settlement" is a roving sculptural installation that uncovers the material and human connections between Chicago’s North and West side communities and the histories that bind them. The ghostly architectural sculptures are currently on display until 11/11 on the northern tip of Lincoln Park and serve as a meditation on access, territory, and migration. WBEZ's Political and Criminal Justice reporter Patrick Smith joined Jill Hopkins on The Morning AMp to discuss the latest updates on the Jason Van Dyke trial. Jason Van Dyke is a Chicago police officer who fatally shot teenager Laquan McDonald in 2014 and is currently tried in court. Patrick is a producer of the series "16 Shots", which examines the shooting of Laquan and the aftermath of the event.

Ramon Smith and Leah Eva are the duoo beghind the Mr. and Mrs. Smith Comedy. Their monthly comedy series is called “This is Your Brain on Beer,” a showcase that features Chicago’s Stand Up Comedians performing two different sets: the first one sober and the second set drunk. The Area is a documentary about corporate cronyism and displacement on the South Side of Chicago. It tells the story of Englewood resident Deborah Payne, one of hundreds of homeowners who were forced out of the neighborhood while Norfolk Southern Railway bought up, home-by-home, 85 acres of property to expand its freight terminal. The result? Tens of thousands of trains and trucks going through the community every day increasing pollution and traffic but also boosting the economic worth of the area. Co-producer and protagonist of the film Deborah Payne along with Communications and Distribution Manager, Luis Perez joined Jill Hopkins on The Morning AMp to talk about the documentary.

Radioactive is a series of community-engaged radio/visual broadcasts located between the largest architecture of Chicago’s West Side, the Cook County Department of Corrections, and the working-class residential area of the Lawndale communities. In August 2014, following the fatal shooting death of Michael Brown by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, DeRay Mckesson took to the streets in protest of police violence. He joined up with what went on to become the Black Lives Matter movement. Since then, Mckesson - with his signature blue vest - became one of the most recognizable faces of the growing movement against police brutality. He is now a formidable civil rights activist, community organizer, and the host of Crooked Media’s podcast Pod Save the People. His first book, “On the Other Side of Freedom” is a timely exploration of social justice, race, and politics, delivered by someone with an insider's point of view. Jill Hopkins spoke with DeRay on The Morning AMp about his book, his views on hope and fighting for a better world, the importance of storytelling in activism, as well as activism "from the inside."

The Little village Music Festival, is dedicated to promoting non-violent spaces for arts, culture, and community engagement. Melanin Voices is a performance series of poetry and live literature created to showcase the local and unsung voices and highlight the narratives illuminated from their writings.
