The first hour of this was aired on the Progressive Channel of DI.fm for the 10th Anniversary of the Old Norsk Sessions show hosted by Nitemer. However, this mix is actually just over five hours and very much the stereotypical DJ 'journey'. It is a representation of how I would play over the course of an entire night... Starting out with progressive breaks, moving into some progressive house and then landing upon melodic techno with a few classics and also exclusive unreleased Jay Kaufman productions thrown in for good measure..

Artist debut for my new project 'Owl'. Owl comprises of Nicholas Vining and myself. We have been working away slowly in the studio for just over a year and this is the first of our tracks to bear fruition from start to finish oiutside of several remixes we've done.

A cheeky sample pinched from a powerful YouTube reading by Benedict Cumberbatch acts as the centrepoint to this dancefloor burning tune. All the right bits are included... Epic buildup, breakdown, hands in the air 'woo' moment and finally a release.

This is just the first of many and will be on our forthcoming E.P.

This is a combined effort in between myself and my new studio partner, Nicholas Vining - who records with me as Owl.

I've spent probably 40 hours on this remix - and I feel it shows. The production is dense and there's lots of layers of various things going on - including edits of the vocals, filtering of the various parts, shaping the original bassline into something new, etc. I have been following Andrew for a while now and upon hearing this, I immediately thought I could ramp up the original for the dancefloor. While the original is a pop song, I think I was able to maintain the concepts of the original whilst injecting some more energy that will keep club dancefloors swaying.

I'm exceptionally proud of this remix. While this is the first collaborative remix I've done as Owl, I had already started it before Nicholas came in to help me with the chorus and when I got stuck. He wrote some beautiful Rhodes chords as well as some ad-lib Rhodes lead and synth lead sounds to set the whole bridge off.

This is a cover of Fat Boy Slim's 'Star 69' track. I've always been partial the the original mix and I had a few of the parts, but not enough to really make it a remix, so I wrote around what little I had and it tunred into this.

This mix is big on Germany. A lot of the 'techno' that's coming out of Germany has been blowing my mind lately. I don't think this is really techno because it's more techno lite (TM), but it's amazing to my ears. Lots of vocals, riffs and drums tough enough to withstand a Houdini punch to the gut.

As always, this is 82 minutes long for those of you who don't have an mp3 connection in your car and choose to burn CDs.

This is also mastered too. I dare say it sounds quite good.

'Deep house' has become one of those dirty words to me. The stuff masquerading as deep house really isn't all that deep and possibly isn't even that house-y, but it's big on groove, vocals and sounds a bit nu-disco-esque too. On top of that, there's a big sound that's coming out of London and Bristol that's very bass driven that also seems to get classed into this 'deep house' banner, when really it's more influenced by 2 Step, UK Garage, Dubstep and Speed Garage. I didn't like speed garage the first time around in the mid-1990s, but for some reason I love the modern incarnation of it. This is a combination of those two sounds together - because they fit quite well!

Here's a collection of tunes that helped shape my early teenage years. These tracks were pumping out on the radio and also on the speakers of the all-ages disco/nightclub that I frequently went to. It's largely downtempo and has a bit of an Ibiza vibe to it as I suspect it was when these tracks were out.

This was originally released back in 2005 on a Canadian label run by an old DJ friend, Matt Lok. Matt and I frequently played together in the early 1990s and were some of the 'original' house DJs in the very small Kitchener-Waterloo rave and club scene.

A long story short, this is my first and last released track featuring me singing. I wanted to prove I could do it. I did. I don't think I'll go down that road again, but I know better to say never. Sadly, this was also the last thing I released on vinyl before the bottom end of the vinyl market fell out. I believe 1000 copies of this were pressed. Now you're lucky to see 200-300 copies of house tracks being pressed. Such is the state of things.

Word on the street is that this will be seeing a re-release in 2015 to celebrate the 10th year anniversary of it's release that will include a remastered original mix and new remixes from myself and others. Stay tuned!

I was working on a track that was using a large chunk of my anlogue synth hardware. Upon closing my DAW, a note got stuck and all of my synths starting doing crazy things at once. This inspried me to jam away live without any form of a sequencer.

This is totally improvised, live and was recorded as you hear it. It's entirely imperfect, but perhaps that's the beauty of it?

The pads and bell sounds are all provided by my Roland JX-8P. The bass sounds are my Korg MS-20 Mini. The oscillating synth sound is the Arturia MiniBrute and finally, the whine sound is my Oberheim SEM-Pro. They're all going through a Spirit FX-16 mixing desk that has an amazing built-in Lexicon reverb on it. Sadly, my MS-20 kept cutting out, so you get to hear that too!

Anyway, the film never received a wide release and pretty much went straight to DVD. In an effort to beef up the script, content and so forth, the soundtrack was recut and my friend Kevin Bazell (AKA Kazell) happened to be the music supervisor of the film. He also starred in it too. Kweku Saunderson is the nephew of Detroit techno legend and pioneer, Kevin 'Inner City' Saunderson of the infamous Belleville Three. The other two producers being of course the equally legendary Juan Atkins and Derrick May.

Kweku has followed in his uncle's footsteps and started in the world of production at a rather young age. Although not quite the same as remixing his uncle, I was proud to be a part of this project with a young and upcoming artist.

That said, there's some projects as artists you wish you could do over, and this was one of them. Frankly I think the remix sucks, but it's out there and on Beatport, so it should be on here too!

I'd actually forgotten I completed this track. This track focuses largely around an oscillating bassline from the rather dashing Anode Meeblip synth from Canada. Coming in a rather convincing $170 CAD, this synth - while monophonic - carries a whallop and unique sound like no other synth I have in my reasonably vast collection. When I got it in the post, I was inspired to write this.

It's probably not a surprise, but I've really been digging the whole Bristol/London bass house/garage vibe that's been happening over the last couple of years. Those influences have clearly rubbed off in a production that I did for the first time ever in Logic X - or even on a Mac for that matter.

I'm new to the Mac world, so I wanted to see how well something would turn out in a program I had really no experience using.

I've always loved the more lush, jazzy and melodic forms of drum 'n bass on labels such as Certificate 18 (Photek's label), Hospital Recordings, Looking Good/Good Looking, Shogun Audio and artists like LTJ Bukem.

As a result of that, I've always wondered if I could produce this genre. A few years ago I tried and this is the end result. I must say I don't think it turned out too badly either!

There's a lot of different music out there masquerading as different genres right now. Progressive House is actually poppy dance music. Deep House isn't exactly deep or aruguably that housey. Melodic Techno is actually Progressive House trying not to be Progressive House because that genre has been poop-i-fied by the liked of Deadmau5 et. al, so it can't call itself that... Except it really is.

Anyway, this is a mix of that sound.

While I have moved away from the progressive house sound - especially after a lot of people started to try and make the next 'Faxing Berlin' by Deadmau5 (and what that variant has become) - I have not given up my love for this genre. These tunes aren't all new. Some have been around for a while, but I haven't found a mix to place them because frankly, finding the sound I like is difficult to do in mass quantities. So this is a mix of good music in my opinion.... Driving progressive house with melodies that are well thought out and not too obvious. This isn't the Beatport-defined genre progressive house. This is a sound inspired by Sasha and Digweed in their heyday - albeit with a modern 2013 twist.

This was my first ever vinyl release on Derby, UK-based Sonambulist Recordings and was released in October 2001. The track was supported and charted by a lot of the better known progressive house jocks of the time.

There's a bit of a back story behind the writing of this record. Around the time this was produced Toronto, Canada (and arguably a lot of the Western underground electronic music world) was going through a massive progressive house wave. Sasha & Digweed, as well as other influential progressive house DJs held down a residency at now-legendary New York City-based club 'Twilo'. The sound was dark, druggy, tribal and euphoric.

There were a few key cities in the world pushing this sound and Toronto was one of them. Buenos Aires, London, Liverpool, Manchester, New York and a few other cities were really pushing this sound. With that, there were also several really well known club nights. Renaissance (still around today) were one of those nights that defined the sound, along with Cream in Liverpool, Twilo in New York and a roughly 800 capacity basement club I frequented every Friday night called Breathe at System Soundbar.

Breathe was the spiritual home for progressive house in Toronto. It's promoters Mike Greco and Jose Gonzalez were astute devotees to the genre and saw to it that even some of the more obscure artists from the genre got to play at Breathe - so much so that they often made their Canadian and sometimes even North American debuts.

Anyway, this record was written largely after a rather 'awe-inspiring' (ahem) night spent at Breathe. Somehow, I managed to come home after spending 8 hours in a nightclub and write the majority of this. I only remember this because the chord breakdown was something I'd sort of ripped off from another record I heard the night before, but with my own twist. I recall being unable to wait to get back to the studio in excitement, as I wrote this track in my head on the hour-long journey back to my studio in Waterloo from Toronto.

The pads are from a Roland JX-8P using the 'Soundtrack' patch that I tweaked a bit with the PG-800 controller. The kick drum is something I sampled from somewhere and put through my Yamaha A3000 MKII sampler that I spent $2200 on not too long before 2001 and is worth $100 now. The leads were re-sampled from the JX-8P, Roland Alpha Juno-1 and a few other sources I don't quite remember. One of the leads is from the sadly extinct TC Electronic Mercury-1 plugin that I used a lot back then. The drums outside of the kick are all samples I grabbed off of the Internet and from a friend who gave me a CD of classic drum machine samples. Finally the whispered sample of the man saying 'the fear' is from the classic sci-fi movie 'Dune', but I didn't say that.

I don't recall how I hooked up with Sonambulist. Even for the Internet being in it's infancy compared to now, I still managed to be heavily connected to people all over the world through my knack (and often annoying) of gab/schmoozing/blagging.

Somehow I managed to develop a relationship with Dale MacKenzie, who was part of Little Fluffy Records in Northern Ireland. He co-ran Sonambulist with Julian 'Jools' Foddey - a resident at Derby, UK-based night 'Progress'. At some point Dale became less and less involved with the label and dropped off the face of the earth, but not before I managed to help sign a few artists I found on then fledgling www.mp3.com website. I was originally looking to sign artists for my label that has never quite come to existence. Mp3.com was about 15 years ahead of it's time with it's business model - long before MySpace, Facebook, Bandcamp and all of the streaming websites out there. Sadly, it wasn't profitable and shut down.

Julian and I are still somewhat in contact, although like many others from that time he is no longer involved with music. Instead, he went back to university to become a special effects guru for a London-based design house that works on all sorts of Hollywood movie blockbusters. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2575104/ I dare say he's probably doing much better at that.

In the end, this record charted heavily on the then influential 'Balance Record Pool' charts, as well as the UK-based Buzz Chart and had Kiss FM radio plays from Graham Gold and a few others. Apparently it got some rather decent play on a Swiss station based upon the royalty statement from SOCAN that surprisingly showed up at my door several years later - $875 of it! It just goes to show you why it's essential you register with your local performing rights society! It was also short-listed for a Dave Seaman Global Underground mix CD, but I don't remember which one. Years later I found out the Cartouche remix of the track had made a compilation CD with the likes of Tiesto, Dave Clarke, etc.

My 'career' in music never quite took off, but this is the record that kick-started it all and sold roughly 1150 copies give or take a few. I've never quite been able to surpass this release. In today's digital age that would probably make it a number one on Beatport's entire site - which is really sad!

Technocracy began as the first electronic music show on college radio station CFBU 103.7 FM (Brock Radio) in St. Catharines, ON, Canada in 1995. The (then) new radio station lacked any electronic music being hosted on its airwaves and Jay Kaufman was the man to carve out what went on to become the premier electronic music and culture radio show for the Niagara Region. It ran on Friday nights and later on, Saturdays as a way to kick start the weekend. Other shows soon followed, as well as a club night using the same name as the show.

Technocracy the FM radio show ran for a total of five years - 3 of which Jay was the main host. Featured guests included people like BT, Timo Maas, Mark E.G., Chris Liberator, Commander Tom, Nils Landstrumm and many more. The club night ran for three years and hosted some of the same names.

Fast forward to now. Technocracy is back in the form of a podcast doing what Jay does best - bring you the best DJ sets from himself and the world over.

I'm incredibly happy with this mix. Low slung-out house music meant for smoke-filled nightclubs of the sleezy house music variety. Lots of pitched down vocals, deep techy sounds and heavy on the key mixing. If you don't rock this out on your headphones or car stereo, you're missing out.

82 minutes made to fit an overburned 80 minute CD. All good CD-burning software has this functionality.

This is my first composition in Ableton from start to finish. I have used it before for piece work and typically produce within Cubase, but Ableton's timestretching features (which Cubase 5 has, but isn't as intutive) make doing something like this rather easy.

I was inspired to do this after hearing Don Henley's 'Boys of Summer' on the radio a little while back. I have always loved the synth work in this tune, so I decided to do a remix of this.

Strangely, this was not meant to come out the way it did. This is a lot more commercial and Pryda-like than I intended when you consider what type of music I'm into as of late (deep, techy, techno).

This is quite housey for me. I started humming this arpeggio in my head, so I immediately captured it to my Blackberry and then played that back into Cubase. I then had Cubase transcribe the audio into MIDI data and ended up with this. This is the first time I've put something together so quickly in probably 8 years or so. Total production in terms of hours was probably around 25 - which is considerably shy of the normal 40+ hours I put into tracks. It just fell together.

I think this is perhaps the best production I've ever made.I kind of think it sounds like a Jimpster track (of whom I love) with a more progressive edge. Full of summery flair!

This is a track I did with a couple of my long time mates - Eric Costa and Matt Nichol AKA Vagrant. I haven't been producing much as of late due to other life commitments and they locked me into my studio and beat this out of me (meaning they did a lot of the work too). It's a Diggers Vortex (TM) type of a tune that's not typical of my sound, but we'll see how it does. Labels that are interested get in touch!

This is a track that's been picked up by Bellarine Recordings in Melbourne, Australia. I wasn't too impressed with the original mix and mixdown, so I tweaked a few of the sounds a little more and also mixed the track down again. The end result is a lot beefier and chunkier in my opinion. The sonics are just that much better.

Composure's label head, Paul Davies sent me this sort of housey/downtempo (albeit really not all that down-tempo) tune a few months back and I instantly fell in love with it. I've been starting sets with it (as featured on one of my mixes hosted here). I wanted to keep the ethos of the original mix, but also kind of club it up a bit and make it chunkier. I think I've succeeded.
