Episode 28: David Signer
On today's episode, I am joined by David Signer, a Portuguese-Swiss national who came to Russia with hopes of delivering high-quality tennis lessons to the most interested tennis enthusiasts. The reality quickly became anything but a positive experience. David tells all in this candid conversation between friends and former colleagues.
The Get Up & Get Out Podcast loves promoting people. We have this platform for that very reason - to give people a voice so that they may motivate others. As we learned today, David loves the triathlon world. IRONSTAR is a company that promotes Ironman events and is THE company that motivated David to become a better person physically.
In addition to David’s love of training he also loves helping children discover their love of learning through the English language. David and some fellow colleagues built and launched Language Patrol - a YouTube channel that teaches English to their students. Go on over to their channel, check’em out, watch the videos and be sure to show them some love by subscribing. If you find their videos to be helpful go ahead and share it with a friend or two - I’m sure David and the crew would really appreciate it!
Thank you to David for coming on the show today. We wish him much success in Russia! The takeaway from today’s show:
Just when you think you're down and out - pick yourself back up and keep going.

Episode 26 w/ Alex and Geoff
(click the picture for access to their website)
https://www.agdwpodcast.com/
In today's episode, I had the great pleasure to chat with Alex and Geoff, from Rhode Island and San Francisco, respectively. We had a blast getting to know each other and listening to these guys' stories of how they ended up in Berlin, Germany.
Seriously, these guys were awesome. We got to know Alex and Geoff through their stories, their experiences, and their tips; some of which they learned the hard way.
Highlights:
Alex got a call late at night from a friend who was living in Berlin. She just left the club at 5am - not many clubs in America are open that late!
Geoff learned the hard way that Vienna is a bit expensive and jobs are scarce for foreigners.
Alex lived in the kitchen above the cupboards.
Both basically moved abroad with no job prospects in mind.
Alex met his girlfriend the first night in Berlin.
Geoff explains that for him, Berlin was a better choice for him - a guy in the tv/movie industry.
Quotes:
"You just gotta try it."
"If you stay comfortable, you'll just stay at home."
"Don't hope for the perfect circumstances." (fly over, get a job, etc.)
"Berlin is not your classic European city."

Episode 25: Joe Bautista talks about family life, his parents almost going broke, military life, free college, working at the Pentagon, becoming a registered investment advisor and now helping other Latinos learn the tips and tools to successfully handling their finances and taking control of their future.
"Coaching Latino Professionals to grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so they can have better careers, better relationships, and personal finances."
In our talk, Joe describes his experience growing up in Oregon in a middle-income family. Both parents worked extremely hard for the life they wanted in America.
Joe went off and joined the Marines and over the years, his G.I. Bill offered him the opportunity to graduate with not one but two degrees.
On his journey, Joe found a nice paying, comfortable job working at the Pentagon...but, that just wasn't him. Beauracracy, routine, following rules, orders, and a regime he was all too familiar within the military, Joe wanted more!
He saw his fellow Latino community struggling with finances and building wealth for years to come. He found is calling!
Joe decided to dedicate his time and his life to applying the skills he had gained along with a long desire to fluently speak Spanish, he set off for Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama and as of this moment, he now resides in Medellín, Colombia - the land of "Eternal Spring". Did you know that Medellín is almost 5000 feet above sea-level...yeah, neither did I. I guess that allows for the 'eternal spring'!
Joe explains to us why he left, what he's been up to and what his future goals are.
We hope you enjoy the episode and feel free to follow Joe or reach out to him - I'm sure he'll be more than happy to give you some tips, advice, or even jump on a call with you!

'There is no such thing as the "Starving Artists"! It's all a myth and I want to show you how you can live within this creative society, that we have today.'
On today's special episode, we have Zhenya and Vlada. These two as a couple are a miracle in their own way...you'll have to listen to understand what I mean.
Zhenya and Vlada run an online business and are the founders of House of Creators, which help digital artists build an online business around their art, and for that, they have a mentorship program. They have also built a community where artists know they can come and get advice on how to build, expand, and run a successful online business around their art.
I ask some deep and personal questions and both Zhenya and Vlada come back with some really great answers!

From Boring (Oregon) to Bolshevik (ya know, Russia) Marcus grew up in a German-American home with 6 siblings on the west coast of the United States. He went to Brigham Young University and has a degree in linguistics. Between spending time in Germany and America he quickly developed the bug to explore. He spent some time studying Russian in Moscow in 2005 and in 2009 he got married to his wife, Oksana in Saint Petersburg. Marcus came back several times over the years and in 2012 settled in Moscow until 2019. Luckily enough, (as COVID would be upon us in 6 months) he was setting up shop for his third business and in September of 2019 moved his wife and two girls to Bonn, Germany. They now have a third child, a son! Today, we are going to get into his life, his travels, his struggles and the wins along the way. Questions during the show include: What were three major struggles for you and how did you tackle them? What was strange to you when living in Russia? What were you happily surprised about when you moved to Russia? What are three to five things you wish you knew before coming to Russia? What's one thing you learned about yourself, living abroad? What advice would you give to those thinking about coming to Russia? What are some of the secrets you learned while living in Russia/Germany? Welcome to Episode 12: Katya and Wilson
On the show today, we have a lovely couple that I’d like to introduce to you.
Wilson was born in Hong Kong, moved to the US at 15, graduated from the University of Kansas and moved to Australia. He continued his studies and got into flying through a really good friend. From computer science degree to acrobatic flyer to 1st Officer of A330 of Hong Kong Airlines, Wilson had it all, well, almost. Since becoming 1st Officer, he’s had quite a bit more time to travel and that's when he met Katya, a Russian girl from Sterlitamack (about a 24hr train ride to the East of Moscow).
Katya, who aspired to become a psychologist, attended university and got a degree in psychology. She got a job in radio in her hometown, the envy of most of her friends, at the young age of 20 years old. She quickly decided to move to Moscow and got into television. She’s been working in the media world for the past 6 years.
One night in Moscow, during the cold winter month of February, 2018, Katya and Wilson met each other at Mari vanna, a restaurant in the area of Patriarch Ponds.
They’re now married but living separately as they need to get permission for Katya to join Wilson in Hong Kong, full-time.
Before the show, we played the Newlywed Game where I asked Katya and Wilson, separately, a series of questions about their partner. Stick around until the end of the show to find out what those questions were and more importantly, what their responses were!
ON TODAY'S SHOW...we will talk about their lives before and after marriage, the cultural and social differences between them and how they deal with living apart.

Today on the show we have a lovely couple that will share their story. Kate a 32 year old Russian came to the United States on a work and travel visa, met a boy, boy liked girl, girl sort of liked boy, one thing led to another and now they’ve been together for 12 years and married for 10. They’ve lived in Ocean City, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Connecticut, Dubai and now have come back to reside in New Jersey, just outside Philadelphia, where Matt, the boy, works as Executive Chef at Osteria. Matt, the American, a 34-year old from the suburbs of Philadelphia, didn’t want to become a construction worker, stopped growing, so sports were out…. so he became a chef.
Topics:
Living in America as a Russian (married to an American) Living in Dubai Cross-Cultural Relationships - the positives/negatives.

A few takeaways from this episode: You never know what your future holds when you walk through the doors that life opens for you.
Sometimes life’s struggles not only show you what you are capable of but it’s those struggles that allow for great success or interesting new opportunities.
When you put yourself outside of your comfort zone - that’s where you grow!
Here are the negatives of living in the United States according to Matt and Katya: 1. Your income might be high but so are your expenses.
2.You generally have to drive everywhere and with Matt and Katya’s family growing, a second car will be in the near future.
3.Paying taxes (or at least filing is A MUST)
4.Don’t get them started on health care! Most of it is simply over-priced “just in case” insurance that usually leads to you paying more money (aside from paying your premium and co-pay).
The Positives:
1.The found each other - that’s #1
2.The ability to travel around the country easily
3.The possibility to do whatever you want in your work life
So, for Katya and Matt, or rather Kate and Matt, the US is a nice place to be - for now. They truly see themselves living outside of the country again in the future and we wish them all the best!
