Michael Carrick speaking to Sky Sports : “We take the point, I think a clean sheet is always good to get. I think we’ve scored a lot of goals this season and we’ve created a lot of chances. It’s just one of those games, you know, it’s a tough game. It was a decent enough point and we nearly won it in the end.
“There were some changes today and I thought, as a collective, the spirit and the attitude of the boys was really good.
“It’s easy to fizzle out after you’ve had a spell and you come towards the end of the season and you’re really focused on finishing the season strong. Was it going to be the perfect game? I think we probably went into it not expecting the perfect game and understanding the situation and the changes.
“It is what it is. It’s something that we need to overthink and certainly not to be negative about because there’s not a lot to be negative about. We understand that we can be a little bit better than we were at certain times today.
“We need to keep improving, keep working. Take the positives, play with the confidence.
“It’s a tough league, it’s a tough league to get results. Today, to take a point from here is okay.”

“We tweaked things second half and for the most part had decent control. I thought the spirit and effort was fantastic. We could’ve scored more but at this time of the year, it’s a results business.”
“We were going to make it anyway and then we scored the second goal. There were just certain spaces that we needed to cover better. It was purely a tactical decision. In the position we were in at half-time, we wanted to see the game through.
“The way the boys managed it – it’s a tough league to get results in. To get the amount of wins we have, we are delighted with that.”

“Frustration, disappointment with the way we played the game. They were the better team with 11 men. They defended really well with 10 men for 70 minutes. We deserved to lose. We didn’t play well, with the right intensity.
“We are not there, not even near the point that we should be to fight for the best positions. We have a lot to do. We have to be perfect to win games, we were not perfect to win games.
“Fighting is not a bad thing. Fighting doesn’t mean they don’t like each other. Fighting is if you lose the ball, I will fight you because we will suffer a goal. That was my feeling with that red card.
“I don’t agree with that sending off. We can fight with team-mates. I know it’s violent conduct, the referee explained it, I don’t agree with that. I hope my players, when they lose the ball, they fight each other. I hope they don’t get sent off, but that is a good feeling not a bad feeling.
“My players showed in many games we can do it. Today, we didn’t. I need to help them. We need to be better in the future.”

Ruben Amorim : “We have a lot of problems. We are just in the beginning. I know that sometimes the results show to people that we are improving, but we have a lot to do.
“You can divide the game in the final 10 minutes, also when we have to take out Harry Maguire and Casemiro at the same time, then suffer two goals, then losing [Sesko], even before the second goal with a big opportunity.
“To play with 10 men, but then to overcome everything and to manage to score, is a good thing, but if you look at the rest of the game, we were comfortable.
“I think we should do better, be more aggressive, feeling the environment in the stadium.
“The three points were there, the space was there, and I think we felt too comfortable during the game, and we need to expect that in one play anything can happen and change the mood of the stadium, and today was that.
“We controlled the game well, but we need to do better, because the game was there for the taking.”

We managed to score again, we tried to win the game, we had a big opportunity in the end. We missed that little bit of luck. We need to work to bring the same away from home as we do in our stadium.
“We are getting better. Everyone can see. We are getting that feeling that if we can’t win, at least we aren’t going to lose. The way we press, the urgency with certain things, I think we did better last Sunday. We need to be like that in every game.”
“It’s something good for the fans. It was a really important goal for us. But I’m more focused on the 90 minutes. And what we did good. That’s what I’ll tell the players. Sometimes I forget that part and I judge the players when I see the games. But, we are doing things right. We are controlling the game. Of course we can do so much to grow. But there are a lot of things we are doing right.
“The good thing is I can see so much more potential to do better things. If you combine those two things, we are progressing.”

“The performance was important. We played different games in different moments. It would not be Manchester United without suffering a bit.
“The best game we did was against Arsenal, but when you have a different spirit, we are a bit more free playing the game. We have a different confidence.
“I never had that feeling of embarrassment of not winning games, I felt Jim always believed, but to face the fans was difficult in that moment. It’s so hard in football, everything can change in one minute.
“We are improving in the bad moments, and respond in a different way. You can feel it with the team. Let’s enjoy, but that urgency of this can change must be there.
“The team play so much better compared to last season. We have players more suited to this type of style. I like more today than last week, it was more complete.”

Asked why he delayed starting him, Amorim added: “He arrives and you can feel it that he needs to adapt. New country, new training, the pressure that you guys put on the goalkeepers are massive. So it was like a little preparation for the guy to be ready to start his first game.
“But now it’s just one game and he needs to work. Because he needs to be prepared that in our club things are really hard. But he did well in the game. He was comfortable during the game and that is a very good sign.”

I cannot remember a very good play from us, but we pushed our opponent in how aggressive we were in the first and second balls. We cannot have someone sent off near half-time in Casemiro, we like to complicate all our games! But it was a good game.
"I felt the urgency, especially in the beginning of the game. The sending off helped us. If you remember the first half, we had so many opportunities three against one, three against two. We have to be more clinical to finish the game sooner. With the sending off of Casemiro, you never know what is going to happen so we have to take the chance to kill the game."

A “must win” just three games into the new season is never a good sign, but with the way United are currently playing and the results they’ve had so far this season, you can understand why.
United led twice, but after more poor and basic defensive errors, Burnley kept pegging us back. Thankfully a VAR assisted spot-kick in injury time for a shirt pull on Amad gave us a penalty. Bruno converted and their were numerous cheers inside Old Trafford. I think more in relief than ecstatic celebrations.

Grimsby Town 2 v Man Utd 2 - Grimsby win 12-11 on penalties

It's been 77 years since Manchester United last played away at Grimsby Town and on that day in 1948 we drew too. In fact, after last night's poor performance we now still haven't beaten Grimsby at their place in eleven games dating back to September 1909.
Football was very different back in them days and most goalkeepers have improved massively since the days of not wearing gloves and saving footballs made from animal bladders and leather. Unfortunately we currently have a "goalkeeper" that couldn't even catch a cold, let alone a football.
Onana has already had plenty of poor performances in a United shirt and in his first outing in one this season, he added to that tally in an absolute abysmal display in front of goal. No words can describe how frustrating he is between the sticks. Yes, United overall weren't great and Grimsby deserved all they got on the night, but when you have a supposed keeper as inept as Onana it surely does not help?
I'm sure Phil has the same opinion and more, enjoy.

Fulham 1 v Man Utd 1

Man Utd registered their first point of the season at Craven Cottage, but in truth it was scarcely deserved.
It could have been very different if Cunha hadn’t been very unlucky with two first half efforts, or if Bruno Fernandes hadn’t “Chrissy Waddled” his penalty into orbit.
But after going ahead in the second half through a contentious own goal that could easily have been disallowed by VAR, United sat back and let Fulham back into the game. They duly equalized and had the better of the late stages. Had the home side snatched the win, you couldn’t have complained.
The lacklustre performance has probably eroded some of the optimism that fans felt after last week’s unfortunate defeat to Arsenal. So is Phil’s glass of cider half full or half empty?

No Michael Knighton this time, but a new look attack for United as they kick off at home against Arsenal.
The result looks all too familiar from last season, but it was a very different performance, and both Cunha and Mbuemo impressed as United dominated the game but were unable to break through a stubborn and well drilled Arsenal defence.
Ultimately, the game was decided by a set piece (what a surprise). Whether it was a push or just very weak goalkeeping, you’ll have to decide for yourself.

Porto 3 v Manchester United 3.Ten Hag : “We started very good, we dominated, scored two goals then we lost control.
“The start was good, the middle was not good then we finished very good. It’s a tough place to go, we’re coming back from 3-2 and we get the equaliser. The team has a strong character, but the middle part we have to improve.”
“We need to be better on the ball, keep switching. We had good players, a good plan. We have to defend better. We had three clean sheets not a long time ago so we can defend very good, but we have to go back to those habits.”
“We will get there. Don’t judge us in this moment, judge us at the end of the season. We are in the process, we will improve. We have had two seasons where we have reached finals, we will continue and fight.
“You see the spirit and the connection between the staff and the team. The players are together, they have a strong spirit and they want to achieve. We have a good mentality but in some defending parts we have to step up.”

Manchester United 0 v Tottenham Hotspur 3.Ten Hag : “What I saw in the first 30 minutes is below the level that we can expect from a Manchester United team. Even when we concede the goal, stay calm and control the game, stick together, stick to the plan and we have a foothold in the game.”
Asked if the issues were psychological rather than tactical, he added: “Definitely. The players got very stressed after conceding so quickly and made very bad decisions on the ball when they had the chance to play over. They should have done better than this.”
“No, I am not thinking about this. We all made together this decision to stay together, as an ownership, a leadership group in the summer, also we made the decision from a clear review what we have to improve and how we want to construct a squad.
“But we knew it will take some time, how the window went, some players late in like Ugarte. Also, we have to make some improvement in organisation, some injuries, we need some time.
“We are all on one page or in one boat together, the ownership, the staff and the players as well. I don’t have that concern.”

Manchester United 1 v Twente 1.Ten Hag : *“We are disappointed as a team. We wanted more but it was far from good enough in the end. They looked like they wanted it more than us and that cannot be right. Personally, you score a goal, you think it is going to be a match winner but it goes the other way.”
“You saw it, it was the game of their life, they fought for every yard and we didn’t – and 99 per cent is not enough, you have to give 100 per cent. When you are leading the game you have to finish it off. You have to go for the second goal and we finish the game.
“We have to be more clinical in situations but I don’t think that is only problem. The structure of the team is also a question of mentality.
“We are very ambitious and when you have ambition you have to performance and prove a point. Today, especially in the second half, we were too easy going, too complacent, We did not bring it over the line and as a team you have to deliver it.”*

Crystal Palace 0 v Manchester United 0.Ten Hag : “When we don’t win, I’m not content. We should have won. I think first half, we ate them alive. Then in the second half it was more in the balance, but first half, we should have scored one or two goals.
“I don’t think [our finishing let us down]. We had total control of the game. In and out of possession, I think we played very good. The only thing was in the box, that is where the game is always decided. We should be more clinical there.”
On the goalkeepers, he added: “It was a brilliant save from Andre Onana twice in one action, it was really brilliant. That is very difficult for a goalie to be there in the moment you needed.
“Dean Henderson also played a very good game, how many balls he stopped. He was in a rhythm, but Andre has to wait and keep the focus and in the right moment, you have to be spot on and he did brilliant.”
Ten Hag also sought to clarify his decision to bench Rashford after Redknapp questioned the decision, saying: “I am very happy with Marcus. It was just about rotation.”

Southampton 0 v Manchester United 3. Ten Hag : “That was the turning point in the game. We got momentum and then you see how small the margins are.
“Against Brighton, we scored a goal and it was crazy it was disallowed, and today, we conceded a penalty, Andre caught it and, a couple of minutes after, we scored a goal. From that moment on, it was our game.
“You have to find a foothold in every game, especially away from home. That was a good learning for this team in how to do this.
“You can see in the games, from the Community Shield on, that this team is growing, but it still needs time.
“We have to build this team and I’m sure we will get there, but it will be hard work. But you can see from game-to-game, there will be improvements.
“I’m very pleased and happy for him [De Ligt]. I know he has some very good attributes as a leader, but he’s also very good at finishing set-plays and that is one of the reasons we bought him.”

Manchester United 0 v Liverpool 3. Ten Hag : “We made mistakes and they were very clinical in finishing, they did very well.
“All the three goals are mistakes from us – individual errors. Maybe about the last one, you can debate, ‘where is our double six?’ but all the others, Liverpool did brilliant. Arne took over, the turnover and the way they finished was so good.
“Don’t argue this. It’s clear Liverpool deserved it. We have to be humble, take this and improve our game.”
On the subject of Casemiro’s performance, Ten Hag added: “You know the game. He knows the game. He will go on, we will go on. He’s a great player. We will continue this season to improve the team and the players.
“He improved, and showed so often, that he is a great character. We all have seen great moments from him, being decisive in the midfield. He will show it again, I am sure he will bounce back.”

“If you can’t win anymore, and I think we were close to winning this game, then definitely don’t lose the game.
“We should keep more control in the game but I think there were very good parts. I’ve seen a lot of positives from the performance but we have to build up in both boxes. We have to be more clinical there, we have to be more aggressive.”
On Mason Mount being subbed at half time: “It was forced. He mentioned an issue and I don’t want to take the risk with him.
“I don’t know how much of a worry it is, I can’t say at this moment. But I think, when we have the good bench, and we can bring in Zirkzee, then don’t hesitate. Bring Mount off and bring [on] a player who can have an impact.”

Manchester United 1 v Fulham 0.Ten Hag : “It showed that subs are very important. It’s great in the first game to bring on a sub and he ends up winning us the game. It’s good for the team process and the spirit of the group.
“Against Fulham, it’s always a difficult game but we pressed very well and we kept them under pressure. We created a lot of chances and should have scored earlier. That’s my only criticism of the team that we needed to kill.
“We know how important it is to keep clean sheets. Two seasons ago we kept the most number of clean sheets in the Premier League.
“When we have our consistent back four, we will defend properly with a high line and the midfield and wingers can get forward. Without a consistent back four, there is no pattern and routines and that’s when gaps appear.”

Manchester City 1 v Man Utd 2 . Ten Hag : “All compliments to the team. We played very good to our identity. Very strong. You have seen how we can play when we have the players on board. Some were not even match fit but the performance was very good.
“I tell you this all year – when the players are fit we can play good football. A very good performance against the best team in the world.
“With a local rivalry it’s there and it’s much more important when you play a team from your own city. But for us it wasn’t about this, it was to prove a point after so many setbacks. The team showed so much resilience and I’m proud of them.”
“I think so. The team. Me as well. It was not right.
“But we didn’t have the players. We have seen the same things, not always good football – definitely not – but we had to make compromises all the time and then you can’t play the football you want to play.
“I had maybe three or four times in two years we had the full squad available. Even today we were missing massive players like Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Casemiro.”

Brighton & Hove Albion 0 v Man Utd 2.Ten Hag : “In the first half, we were not 100 per cent in control. At half-time, we made some changes and then the second half was much better. Defending, organisation, pressing was better, but also in possession, we kept the ball better and made good movements in behind.”
“The manager and the coaching team have luxury problems, which is good. Both formations can be a success.
“We can play how we set up at the Etihad where we were a threat with the movement in behind. But with Rasmus Hojlund in this form, it’s absolutely a consideration that we have to take. But we not only need 11 players, we need a bench as well.”
“Our position was a nightmare across the season with all the injuries and if you want to have results, one of the foundations of a good team is a centre-back partnership. "I'm very frustrated. In phases of the game, we did very good but in the end you have to take the three points. We gave it away and it's very frustrating.

The leadership, how we stayed calm and composed, stuck to the plan, stuck to the belief and turned it around. We played very good football and out of our plan and our rules, we scored very good goals.
“At the start, every team has areas where they need to improve and definitely we also have some. But we have to progress there if we are to be successful. But you can see that this team has good character, good personality. There is a good spirit and energy in the team. They found a way to win.”
Fernandes was crucial to that, United’s outstanding performer. “I think in almost all aspects he played very good game of the highest level. Keeping calm, keeping his emotions under control and at the right moment using his emotions. He was brilliant in attack, making the difference. I was very pleased with his performance.”

“Everyone has to match the standards and the rules,” he explained in the press conference after the game. “There have to be consequences. That is also what I expect on the pitch otherwise you cannot be successful. He gave the right answer.”
He added: “That is how it has to be. We are a team that is hard to beat but that is because we are attacking with 11 and defending with 11. That is because everyone is following the rules. If you don’t do that anymore, if you don’t follow the rules, it flows onto the pitch.”
“I don’t talk about the past,” he added. “Let’s talk about the future. We have taken a good step. The first time in the top four. But there is a long way to go. We have to win every game to get into a position where you can win something. That is what we are aiming for. It demands hard work from everyone.”

Manchester United 3 v Nottingham Forest 0. Along with most of the team last night, Rashford was excellent, but the most outstanding player on the pitch was Casemiro. He just made the game look so easy by making interceptions, putting in tackles and then sliding in delightful passes. A joy to watch.
Erik ten Hag told the BBC: “We conceded no goals, kept a clean sheet. Happy with that because it is always the base to compete. We could have scored more goals definitely.
“We had some great attacks, lots of movement. When you have one on ones with the keeper, you have to score more goals.”
On Marcus Rashford’s performance, he added: “It was not only Rashford but I’m really happy with his performance once again. He is in a really good pattern and if he keeps with this pattern and spirit, it is good for us and good for him.”
Regarding United’s plans for the January transfer window, he added to Amazon Prime:“We are looking for offensive players. We are looking for a striker.
“We are always in the market, but it has to match the sporting criteria but also the financial criteria. We do what we can to bring in the players we need.”

Manchester United 2 v Burnley 0. United are back! Back at Old Trafford after a truly tremendous World Cup, which was terrific to watch. However, walking back inside Old Trafford on Wednesday night was great and it felt good to be back watching United whilst singing FIVE CANTONAS! Merry Christmas Everyone!
Asked if the mid-season break was tough, Ten Hag said: “It is. We had a plan on how to do it, how to manage the load on the players.
“It’s all individual-based, no one is the same, no one had the same programme or minutes, and they play in different positions and are different ages. We tried to give everyone a plan, but we all know the restart is five or six days after the World Cup final.
“The Premier League resumes really quickly so everyone has to be ready for that, the manager, coaching staff and players have to accept that. “We want trophies, we want to have a strong team to battle for trophies. We have to adapt, do it smart, and hopefully, we can perform and get the right results.”The significance of such achievements, particularly for a Manchester United manager, is not lost on Ten Hag, who is braced for the battle ahead.
“We are aware the competition is tough, but it counts for all the seven, eight clubs fighting for the top four,” the Dutchman said. “For all those that watch the Premier League, it is great because it will be exciting. You have to battle for every duel to get your points.
“I am looking at the process, how we are performing – we have to get results – but if we make the right progress, we have a good chance to get into the top four. “I accept it [the pressure] how it is. But also, for the manager of Chelsea, Newcastle United, all those clubs invested a lot in their squads as well.
“For every manager, it is big pressure to get into the Champions League. You want to be in top four, you want to fight for trophies. That is our aim, that is clear.”

Manchester United 4 v Aston Villa 2. "First half we controlled the game by good pressing, we won a lot of balls in the opponent's half but then we did the wrong things," Ten Hag told Sky Sports. "We were really bad in transition, missing the pass. We missed a lot of opportunities in the first half. Then in the last seven or eight minutes we were sloppy on the ball.
"At half-time we said keep the pressing but be more direct with passing behind their defence. Then we fight back and I'm really proud of the team that they can do that after Sunday's defeat, after two times they're down.
"They play with a high line. Pass the ball behind. We were quite successful with that in the second half.
"The problem in the first half was we had too many touches and missed the moment to pass the ball behind. That's why we brought Eriksen onto the pitch.

Alejandro Garnacho, a key part of last season’s FA Youth Cup triumph, made his first United start at the age of 18 and left to a standing ovation.“I think it was a good performance from him,” Ten Hag said. “He did what I expect him to do.
“First, he deserved the chance after the last weeks. The start was difficult for him in the season.
“I was not happy with him but the last weeks I was happy with him – he got a better attitude, more resilience, more determination and what you see he is a talent.
“To deal with the ball in tight areas, to run behind, and especially also his tempo dribbles, he can take players on and that’s a good capability in football nowadays, especially against opponents who are defending that compact like this opponent.

Chelsea 1 v Manchester United 1. Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag told Sky Sports: “As always, he [Ronaldo] can score goals and he is value for us. We need him, it’s clear and you see it also in this game. He can finish off, that’s quite obvious.
“I think I have said enough about that situation. Let’s focus on this game, it was a good game for my team and I have to compliment my team.“If you can deliver this after four games in 10 day and then dictate this first half, the second half were really well organised and you fight back, I think that has to be the focus.”
Chelsea manager Graham Potter told Sky Sports: “It’s disappointing because at 1-0 you can see the end but over the course of the game, a point is about right. I don’t know whether we did well enough to win it. It was a fighting performance; we improved a lot after 30 minutes. In the end we take what we get.
“I didn’t feel we had enough control of the game, we probably needed an extra body in midfield to try and put a bit more pressure on, create turnovers to win the ball. I thought we were better after that.
“The boys gave everything, we can improve a lot in terms of our attacking play because we can create a bit more but we were playing against a good side.”

Manchester United 0 v Newcastle United 0. Erik ten Hag: “The performance was good, a clean sheet, we pressed well, we controlled the game and in stages we were good on the ball – especially in the second half.
“Then, we dictated the game and in the end we could – we should – have scored the winning goal. One from Fred, and then [Marcus] Rashford had to score.
“In the end we could have got the win, we deserved the win, and it is a big compliment to the team that we deserved this with a physical performance against one of the most physical teams in the league. They [Newcastle players] all had cramp and we kept going.”
An afternoon of frustration where we just couldn’t find a winning goals against a well drilled Newcastle team, who I thought were excellent from front to back as a defensive unit. Chances were few and far between for both teams, but I always felt we’d still sneak it towards the end. It wasn’t to be, but a decent enough performance overall. Bring on Spurs!

Manchester United 2 v Tottenham Hotspur 0. Asked about Ronaldo’s decision to walk down the tunnel before the full-time whistle, Ten Hag said: “I don’t pay attention to that, I will deal with that tomorrow. I want to keep the focus on the team.
“It was magnificent from all 11 players. I have to correct myself. It was also a performance from the substitutes who came on. Once again, it was a squad performance. I think what we have seen is 11 players who defend and 11 who attack. I was pleased.”
“Against this Tottenham, you need good pressing, good counter-pressing, from there you can create chances. So you need good pressing players. Offensive wise you need that dynamic. That is what Marcus brings. We saw that from the last 20 minutes against Newcastle, when it changed the game and all the players got the benefit of it.”
United were terrific last night and if it wasn’t for Hugo Lloris it could have been 5-0 to us. He was superb, especially the two saves from Rashford. To be fair, Spurs started brightly and did have a fair bit of space in the first ten minutes, but after that United reacted and fully deserved to win the game.
Fred outstanding, Bruno as well, but I thought Luke Shaw had his best game for us in a very long time, but one off good games are not enough. More consistency required from them and a few others but overall a truly excellent performance from the back line, through the midfield and up front. Well played!

“In every game except against Brentford we score. In this team there’s a lot of creativity and scoring capabilities. Sometimes you have a night you will not succeed and some players today was the night but what the good thing is the team keep going, they don’t give up, keep believing [they will] score and in the end they get rewarded. That’s the way you have to do it.
“I’m really happy [a sub has scored for a fourth game in a row]. It tells you something about the spirit in the squad, they understand it’s not about 11 players, you have to do it, and sometimes it works like that. When you believe in it, the opponent is getting tired, the subs can have an impact when they have the right attitude, the focus to be direct, are fresh and score.
“It’s not about me. When you bring in McTominay you know he can arrive there but it’s not a typical scorer who will score 20 goals. But when you bring Rashford behind and a new combination on the left with Luke Shaw and Jadon Sancho, we create energy, they bring tempo on that wide left area, that’s good to see and it can be your sub will score.”

Everton 1 v Manchester United 2. Ten Hag happy with the reaction “Quickly 1-0 down. But the reaction of the team is good,”. “That’s one of our aims, to respond well to setbacks. “First half we were pressing well. It was difficult for them to come into the game. Happy with that.
“We are also happy with all the subs coming on. Cristiano with the winning goal. Happy with the result of course, but for a lot of periods, also happy with the performance. “It’s difficult here, the crowd behind them. But also they are in a really good way. They are difficult to score against, but we scored two – maybe three.”
Personally I thought it was decent enough performance from United and we certainly showed character coming back from going a goal down so early. Defensively we were good, our attacking was quick and decisive at times and we looked a solid unit – especially considering there was a few changes of personnel to the team.
One criticism, we gave the ball away too often and too easily. Stray passes here, under hit passes there and often in very dangerous positions when we weren’t even under any pressure. That has to be resolved as better teams (like City last weekend) will seriously punish us.
Enjoyed the game! And special mention to that man Ronaldo, 700 club goals – what a player!!!!!!!

Athletic Club Omonia Nicosia 2 v Manchester United 3. Erik ten Hag’s reaction : “I think we started well, couple of chances and then an unnecessary mistake. It cannot happen – you have to take responsibility there. Then a really bad 10 minutes and we have to learn from that. “We were too static and you have to make opposite movements to get behind. That’s why we also made two subs and they had an impact.
“I think the subs really had an impact today and that is really good to make the team stronger. On Martial: “We have already seen in pre-season. It was big disappointment for this team and for me when he got injured. We missed him and that also had an effect on our performance.”
Neil Lennon’s reaction : “We rode our luck. It was a great game and we kept ourselves in the game, whether it be good goalkeeping or United missing good chances. To score two goals against them is probably more than I could have imagined. “I don’t think, until we scored, we believed in ourselves really, but it gave us something to hold onto. The third goal killed us and on the balance of play United thoroughly deserved to win.
“The second goal, we were too open, and that was at a crucial point in the game. Bruno then misses a great chance to get us back in it. When you’re feeding off scraps you’ve got to make them count. “There’s things we could do better but the gulf between the teams is huge. But we’ve made a game of it and to get two goals is fantastic.”
It wasn’t a routine win in Europe for United because of the poor defensive mistakes that happened for both their goals. Plus we didn’t take our chances when we had them, but for the most part is was a decent enough display of keep ball and chances were created. Just need to be more clinical next time and get the game won early. On to a bloody 7pm KO Sunday night now!

Manchester United 0 v Real Sociedad 1. Where we you when you United conceded a penalty to Real Sociedad? Well, I was in the ground but having completely missed the incident I was a bit confused as to why a penalty had been given. I asked the guys in front of me and they too were a bit confused, but we came to the conclusion it must have been a blatant handball which stopped a shot on target.Two hours late I finally got the answer when I saw a replay of the incident. Wow! Anyway, not to moan decisions you have to accept it unfortunately. It’s something I always tell the kids I coach. Which doesn’t always help but as players you have to stay focused. Unfortunately that was something many of our players did last night.
Too many missed placed passes, too many sideward passes rather than forward ones and too many indecisive decisions from so many players. It was a bad night at the office. Time to panic though? No. Ten Hag will have learned even more about certain players and at the end of the end, win four of the next five Europa League and we can still qualify. No need to panic at all.
This is a project and a minimum 2-year project at that. There will be more setbacks and plenty more success but we must continue to support and back the new era. Roll on our next game, which now looks to be another Europa League game.

Leicester City 0 v Manchester United 1. You wait all that time for one away win and then you get two away wins in the space of a week. Brilliant. Again, not the greatest of away performances from the team, but for the most part Leicester were no threat and we mostly controlled the game throughout.
As bad as Leicester City have been this season, we certainly didn’t take full advantage of all their defensive weaknesses. In fact, we hardly created that many chances overall and rarely tested their keeper Danny Ward. As performances go though, it was more of an improvement and I can certainly see the way we are now trying to play under ten Hag.
The player changes he’s made and stuck with since the opening two defeats has been impressive and there seems to be a lot of belief back in the side. Which is remarkable really considering how bad that Brentford performance was. Mistakes will still be made, but as I always say, there is nothing wrong with that as long as we learn from them and continue to progress in the right direction.
Eric ten Hag has plenty of time, so let us as fans continue to back him and the players whilst he moulds the team and squad. Whilst continuing to move on any players that no are longer required if not good enough or are unwilling to learn and develop themselves as players.

Manchester United 3 v Arsenal 1. Welcome Antony Matheus dos Santo and what a start for the 22-year-old, scoring on debut at Old Trafford against Arsenal. What a goal too. Of the hour he played in the game though, I was most impressed with his willingness to track back, tackle and close down the opposition, he never stopped and that was terrific to see.
Personally I thought Arsenal should have been 1-0 up with their disallowed goal standing, but some of the football rules in place these days make no sense to me. Anyway, we got with it and made the most of it, by continuing to create chances but then take them. Arsenal were good though and the progression under Arteta in the last year has been impressive. Not that I didn’t expect to see it myself. Erik ten Hag will have us much improved by this time next year as well I believe.
Well played Rashford too, always preferred him down the middle but in both positions he played today and was always making runs, not many backwards, but at least the forward ones were there again and gradually he’s getting some confidence back. Great win anyway, another 3 points, more impressive displays by our new signings as well as some of our old ones. Europe next up.

Manchester United 2 v Liverpool 1. Tremendous evening last night. Before kick off and after. Inside and outside Old Trafford. It felt like the old days. With beers in The Quadrant first, then onto Morgan’s Bar near the Tollgate ahead of joining the protest march at 7pm to Old Trafford. Then beating the scousers comfortably with some with basic effort. Followed by a beer in The Gorse on the way home.
Glazers out was chanting before kick off, during the game and even after the final whistle. Change is needed and needed fast.
As for the players performance last night. Outstanding. Just shows what a bit of effort can do when they put their minds to it. Especially coming off the back of that performance against Brentford last Saturday. Pure basics of effort and commitment is all we as fans ask for. Even if we’d have drawn and or even lost the match towards the end last night I’d have gone home (gutted yes) but still proud of the team’s performance.
It must continue though! Pointless getting yourself up for games like that and then losing away to say Southampton this Saturday with another limp performance. It’s fine if you get beat United. Just please go down with a fight whilst battling for every single ball and committing to every tackle. The biggest thing for me last night was the sheer urgency to try and stop crosses. Another basic. Unbelievable atmosphere too!

Brentford 4 v Manchester United 0. Wow!!! Terrible attitudes, horrible to watch, players that are no good, it’s bad, it’s very bad. If we all thought Manchester United Club was partially broken before the weekend, well we’re now close to a total collapse. I’d like to say things can only get better from here, but they won’t, they can’t. Things can only get worse before anything will slightly change on the field and most certainly off it.
I back Ten Hag all the way, along with the team but there are certain players who look even less interested and worse than they did last season. How on earth is that even possible? A clear out of even more players still needs to happen and that is going to take at least another year or two.
Nine of the starting eleven on Saturday were regulars last season but only about two of them played well all season. Too many players out of form, low on confidence and more to the point simply not good enough.
I totally get Ten Hag playing them and giving them a chance to play his way, but he seriously needs to drop them and get rid if they can’t or are unwilling to comply with his way. And that’s fine with him. Weed out the rotten ones I say.

Manchester United 1 v Brighton & Hove Albion 2. Well, the new Premier League season finally started for us yesterday, but no one should be surprised with the outcome of our performance. Woeful. And that’s being kind.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m ever the optimist and always look to the future with Ten Hag the man to do it. I see a minimum two-year project and by then there should be a massive improvement from where we are currently at.
Yesterday was a reminder of how much we still have to learn and improve on because for the best part of yesterday’s game – it could have been last season.
Poor passing, poor marking and a sheer lack of awareness.
I’m not going to over react myself though. We all know we’ve got rid of plenty of bad eggs from the squad, but there are still players here that are simply not good enough. Ten Hag will soon realise that and unless he and coaches can’t improve them, then they will be have to be moved on too. That’s the positive for me. Learn from the mistakes and only then can we improve on how bad yesterday’s opening game was.

With pre-season 2022 now out of the way, all eyes turn to this Sunday, 2pm at Old Trafford and the visit of Brighton & Hove Albion in our opening Premier League game of the season. Due to work commitments I can’t make it, gutted, but I’ll be there for next one against them lot from the end of the East Lancs.
Having watched pretty much all of our pre-season tour games on various streams. As well as attending both the Altrincham v United XI on Saturday just gone and being at Ten Hag’s first Old Trafford game against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. I’ve been impressed so far and all seems to be looking good on the field.
The new signings all look good, especially Martinez, but most of all the subtle improvements I’ve seen in some of our existing players, who underperformed so badly last season has been good to see. Don’t get me wrong, pre-season is pre-season and fitness levels are being worked on, so only time will tell if certain players are willing to take on board what Erik and the coaches have to say.

As pre-season 2022 starts and with the new season just over three weeks away, is this once again a new era for Manchester United Football Club? Well, going off the starting line-up of our recent friendly against Liverpool in Bangkok you wouldn’t have thought so.
For me, that is not a major issue, for others fans it might be. I, like many know where the squad needs improving and has needed improving for a fair few years now. Midfield. I’m all for new signings as well of course, but I’m also pro-coaching and actually working with players that we have and that is as much a priority than everything else.
I’m very happy that we’ve finally got rid of a lot of players, some of them a lot later than other. Lets be honest though, we can’t get rid of them all. Therefore the answer is, work and coach them. If that still doesn’t work, ship them out rapidly before offering them a new lucrative long term deal.
As usual, too much focus in the media will be about what we do and achieve this season, where win finish and what we win. Nonsense! This season has to be about improving the team across all areas, having an identity and finding a style of play so we can progress, build a team/squad, so we can challenge for a league title in two or three years.
“Why have we signed a left back when we have two” I hear? Because you start building your team from the back and the two current left backs aren’t good enough. I’m well aware Alvaro Fernandez is still want to watch mind due and I’d love to see him get some game time eventually. Patience is key as always, but progression in essential.

It’s now the end of June and after a truly awful season there is only one way to look and that’s forward. Not that I’m currently interested myself as I’m (as usual) still fully switched off from all things United until the start of the season. Have we signed anybody yet?

However, it has been nice hearing every now and again or day after day that another player has left the club. Crystal Palace 1 v Manchester United 0. At last, the season is finally over and it couldn’t have come soon enough. There are a lot of words that describe our season this year, but I’m going to stick with just two. Truly Awful.In all my years following United, this has been the worst. The lack of effort from certain individuals has been shocking to see, topped by so many more of the usual club and owner mistakes.
As for the game yesterday, we played better then two weeks ago against Brighton, but not by much. Our standard woeful passing was at its best from the usual suspects. Which just baffled me and my lads as we watched wrong pass after wrong pass after misplaced pass all afternoon.
The only plus side was seeing Elanga and then the likes of Mejbri, Shoretire and Garnacho getting game time. Roll on Alvaro Fernandez getting his chance next season as well under Erik ten Hag.

Manchester United 3 v Brentford 0. Well, due to stupid fixture scheduling, we have now had our final home game with three weeks of the season still to play. Great! It does seem very daft but considering the season we've had I think most of us will be happy to not have to step inside Old Trafford again this season. To watch the first team of course, as I'm sure plenty of us will be there next Wednesday for the FA Youth Cup Final.
Good to see the club or whoever are now promoting how many tickets they've sold for the final and what an achievement it is. Just a shame, the club couldn't promote the three previous rounds that were played there against Everton, Leicester City and Wolves. As a season-ticket holder I didn't even get an email about it. I went to all three games of course because I knew they were on but limiting the free tickets availability was so poor, espeicially the Leicester game which was played during half-term. They could have got loads more kids in.
Anyway, as for the first team, it's Old Trafford and out for so many players now. Some will leave in the knowledge the fans appreciated what they'd done (even if some should have been moved on earlier) and a fair few will leave with us saying 'good riddance' in what could be the biggest summer clear out in the club's history.

Manchester United 1 v Chelsea 1. Same old problem again, Ronaldo scoring! When’s he going to stop with this? What a player he is and last night both my lads were in the ground with me at the same time to witness the great man scoring right in front of them at the Stretford End. Brilliant.
The game itself wasn’t mind due, especially the first half where Chelsea completed dominated play with so much of the ball as they moved it around quickly whilst finding so much space. Telles had an absolute torrid time, but it wasn’t just his fault because he certainly wasn’t helped out by his team mates and was constantly outnumbered as cross after cross came in.
I was hopeful of seeing Alvaro Fernandez getting some game time in the second-half, but after those first forty-five I knew there was no way Ralf would throw him in and to the lions. Chelsea were excellent, creating chance after chance, thankfully so was David De Gea who pulled off a numerous amount of saves.
After all the pressure and Chelsea dominance, United still failed to work out how to defend crosses (same old problem) and it was no surprise we eventually conceded that way. As we have so many times this season. Too slow to even get close to stopping a cross and then not marking the back post. Standard. Glazers out!

Arsenal 3 v Manchester United 1. I was two minutes away from my house when the game kick off yesterday, by the time I’d pulled up in the car and got inside my lad informed me we were already one down before I even got to in front of the screen. Eyes rolled, here we go again.
And when I saw the replay not long after, it came as no surprise it was down to our awful defending once again and that pretty much summed up our afternoon. Poor defending cost us for all three goals, because other than that it was a pretty decent performance from ourselves in general as well as going forward. Over I thought we were the better team, however, when you don’t take your chances and your opposition do there is only one outcome.
I could go on about referring decisions on the pitch as well as referee decisions using VAR, but what is the point? We all know the referees use it wrong, or at least are told to use it incorrectly by the powers that be above them, Either way, as the game was a dead rubber anyway with us having nothing to play for, I was wasn’t overly bothered. Always like to win of course, but the priority now is to see this season out whilst we prioritise the planning and preparation ahead of next season.
Oh, another quick mention for Cristiano Ronaldo once again, after an unbelievably tough week for himself and his family he was there out on the pitch trying to win the game. Nice one on your 100 Premier League Goals.

Liverpool 4 v Manchester United 0. Grim. Is what that was tonight. Truly grim. Was the defeat expected, absolutely, but that’s the first time I can remember thinking that before kick off, ever.
At times the effort was unforgivable by our so called players as Liverpool players (already 2-0 up) were running past our players with desire to win every second ball.
Spineless, but again, it comes as no surprise. The sheer laziness and lack of effort from so many is frightening to see and how so called professional footballers can turn up like that every week is beyond words. Barring two or three we’re a squad of not very good squad players. End of. Saying that, that’s unfair on so many United squad players of the past, because when they were needed they had the heart, desire and sheer will to win at all costs. Not this lot.

Manchester United 3 v Norwich City 2. The sun was shining yesterday at Old Trafford, but unfortunately United’s performance wasn’t as very few players shined on the pitch that’s for sure.
Ronaldo obviously with another three goals, along with both Elanga and De Gea as well Mata to a point when he came off the bench were all good and actually looked interested.
The rest of them were bang average I’m afraid, but a couple more were even worse and who just contributed nothing. I’m still baffled as to why certain players are still playing when they’re due to leave the club. The sooner they are gone the better. Roll on the end of the season!

This is just one example, I’m not picking on Wan-Bissaka specifically, but this happens time and time again every single game and it’s not acceptable! A lot of our players need moving on as quick as possible.

Manchester United 0 (1) v Atletico Madrid 1 (2). We’re currently not good enough to win a League Cup, an FA Cup or more importantly even challenge for a Premier League title. Yet, every year it seems all our focus is now on finishing in the top 4 positions of the league table to qualify for a Champions League place.
And here we are again, knocked out of a competition we’re clearly not going to win, because unfortunately we’re currently no where near good enough. I’ve said it for many years, but how about putting all our focus into building a team and squad from the bottom, have an actual structured plan and eventually we may get back to the very top or at least put up a really good challenge.
If that means playing at the levels we’re only good enough to play at in other European competitions then so be it. Rather than scrapping and scraping to scramble to finish fourth whilst patching up (or not in the case of our midfield), filling in gabs and throwing money at random contracts for players, coaches and managers, just to be where we currently still are and have been for many years now.
It’s embarrassing, yet the likes of Sky Sports, BT Sport and the media in general continue to build up “the battle for top 4” race as some sort of trophy. And some people believe it. It’s nonsense in my opinion.
I love the Champions League (European Cup) and I’d love nothing more than seeing United winning it again, but honestly we really do need to be in a position in the first place to even challenge for that. And as a club we’re not. Will that stop me and my lads supporting the team or going to games. Absolutely not. UNITED!

For the players to give up as they did in a Manchester derby like that is close to unforgivable and I see a few have already been updating their social media accounts today saying they’ll keep fighting and do better next time.
How about for once just not saying anything at all. Then come out and play, fight, battle and put everything you have into every single game you play for the club from now on.
We all know where our supposed ‘football’ club is at currently, it’s a shambolic mess, from top to bottom and nothing looks like changing for a long time.
The least us fans expect on the field though is complete and total passion to try and win every tackle and challenge at all costs whilst going down fighting. Not give up in the manner we did yesterday. I’ll say it again. Disgrace.

Atletico Madrid 1 v Manchester United 1. Out, but only as in out played, out performed and out battled in a first half when we looked a complete shambles. Yes we had possession of the ball, but all of that was in our own half and when Madrid pressed we panicked and constantly gave the ball away.
To be fair, De Gea didn’t have much to do, so as much as our defence and midfield gave the ball way, we then defended pretty well. Except for the goal we conceded of course. Awful. Experienced defenders with their body positioning all wrong whilst watching the ball and not marking their players.
This is Madrid though. Six of our players the other day couldn’t even stop/cut out a Dan James left footed cross.
Up step Elanga though and full credit to him and United for staying in the game and creating an excellent move for the goal. All the players improved second-half including the five subs that Ralf brought on to try and change the game and again I’ve got to give him credit for that and coming away with a draw.

Manchester United 2 v Brighton & Hove Albion 0. What a strike from Cristiano Ronaldo last night to give us the lead and being right behind it in the Stretford End I knew it was in as soon as he hit it. Cue celebrations!
United started the second-half brightly and with more urgency, but that was not difficult after a truly awful first-half from our point of view. Brighton controlled the game, made easy passes, found space and had so much time on the ball. When they did lose it they won it back quickly. As for United's passing when we did have, it was so wasteful and time and time again we struggled to get it out from the back into midfield and up to our forwards.
From bad to better then. I thought Sancho, Elanga did good in the first-half, along with De Gea who pulled off a tremendous save but the rest were just not at it. Thankfully others got better in the second-half, including Pogba who came off the bench but it still all seemed a struggle against 10-man Brighton who continued to play good passing football, create chances and still controlled the game in parts.
We got the win, but my word if play like we did in that first-half at Elland Road on Sunday I'm positive we will not get away with it.

Manchester United 1 v Southampton 1. A bang average first-half from United yesterday was followed by a truly awful second-half and Southampton got the point they deserved. The sheer lack of urgency from our players to mark along with so many basic errors in regards to tackling and fighting for every ball is frightening.
Southampton’s goal came from a pass out from Fraser Forster and four passes later the ball was at Che Adams feet and he slotted home. It was so easy and our players were no where to be seen. Clueless.
In total about three players did okay yesterday, Sancho again was one of them, but the usual culprits who should not be starting matches were at their usual poor selves. Along with those players that are still playing that do not want to be there and will be leaving in the summer.
Stop chasing this fourth place, it’s nonsense. Just start playing players that want to be there and start planning for the future now! Before it’s too late once again.

Burnley 1 v Manchester United 1. Another evening of missed chances costs us, this time on a wet and windy evening up in Lancashire at Turf Moor. Two disallowed goals and plenty of other opportunities to score more in a first-half we absolutely controlled and dominated.
Which was great to see when you think back to some of our opening 45-minutes this season when we’ve been outplayed and easily out battled against weaker opposition. Come half-time though, after so many missed chances you just knew that if Burnley got a chance they’d take it and they did. And no surprise it was because of poor defending from two parties who have been guilty of many mistakes this season. Shaw and Maguire.
Looking at the positives, which there were plenty of, Sancho looked good, Bruno did, Pogba too (even though he’s leaving). De Gea with an outstanding save and generally it was a very good opening 45 minutes. Mentality and weakness in the second-half cost us though, but we should have been three or four goals up by then. It was Middlesbrough all over again.
I’m also going to give a bit of credit to Rashford who had a decent game, but his play for our goal is what we’ve all been screaming out for him to do for a long time. Once again he had two or three players near him running into the box and this time he didn’t just run into them and lose the ball, he did actually play in the overlapping Luke Shaw and we scored from it. Maybe he is learning. I really hope so.
Play like that first-half more often going forward and in the future eventually the chances we created will start to go in more often. An awful draw overall and two easy points dropped. Next up Southampton in the league on Saturday. Another 12.30pm kick-off, but I’m off to Old Trafford this evening first to see United take on Everton in the FA Youth Cup 5th Round.

Manchester United 1 v Middlesbrough 1. AET. Middlesbrough win 8-7 on penalties. Yet another very disappointing evening at Old Trafford last night, as we lose on penalties to Championship side Middlesbrough in the FA Cup. Woeful.
The FA Cup means everything to me, I love it and I’m absolutely gutted to be out of the competition too early once again. Quarter-Finals last year, 4th round this year. Simply not good enough.
Yes we created chance after chance, but we didn’t score and we didn’t see out the game in 90 minutes. People will talk about the penalty incident decision, VAR, missing penalties, no half-time pies, but at the end of the day we couldn’t beat a team sitting seventh in The Championship.
Credit to Middlesbrough, they stuck at it and kept themselves in the game and if you do that then you always have a chance. And when they got their chance they took it.

Manchester United 1 v West Ham United 0. Hallelujah a 3pm kick off on a Saturday, praise the lord! I just needed to get that in first as it’s so rare these days we have old style match days with an old style kick off time. Especially considering we’ve had so many ridiculous 12.30pm Saturday kick offs already this season, with even more to come I suspect.
Nearly two hours after the 3pm kick off there was absolute scenes and bedlam around Old Trafford an sub Marcus Rashford tapped in from close range with virtually the last kick of the game.
I’ve experienced being in the ground and seeing many late United winners in my time, but yesterday my eldest lad got to experience it with me in the Stretford End. When both of us lost all control of ourselves for over a minute as we jumped and bounced around. Absolutely brilliant!
Yes, it was only 3 points at the end of the day, but you cannot beat last-minute winners. It’s right up there as one of the best things in football.
As for the game, chances were few and far between for both sides, although towards the end they started to come a bit more regularly. I thought Dalot looked good again, Telles too and thankfully Harry Maguire had his best game in a long time. He looked a bit quicker, stronger and he was certainly more physical in all of his challenges, which I think he won most of. Declan Rice for them was outstanding too though and I wouldn’t say no if Mr Richard Arnold opened his cheque book for him.

Brentford 1 v Manchester United 3. Despite his team losing last night Brentford manager Thomas Frank confirmed they “destroyed” us, just like he said they “battered” Leicester City back in October. They lost that game as well.
Yes United were lucky not to be behind at half-time thanks to some superb saves from David de Gea, who once again kept us in a match. Mathias Jensen could have had a hat-trick as Brentford created numerous chances to our none. Not that we weren’t in the game, we were and controlled it at times, but when Brentford broke quickly they did look dangerous and we struggled to cope.Their chances came from our poor passing (thankfully not as many as usual, so signs of improvement) as well as not winning 50/50 challenges and not getting to second and third balls quick enough.
That changed second-half though, we got more control, we dominated play and moved the ball forward a lot faster and better. Chances were created and unlike Brentford in the first-half, we took our chances brilliantly and Bruno Fernandes should have even scored a fourth right at the end.
Excellent to see Elanga given another chance and there are signs of better play in certain playing positions, but it is still going to take time. I am liking that Ralf is using other players from the squad though, rather than just playing certain “regulars” who’ve been out of form for a very long time now.
Great effort by the United away end as always, super effort on a Wednesday night and a brand new ground ticked off for probably the majority of them. Bring on West Ham on Saturday now. Whoop, an actual 3pm kick off on a Saturday!

Aston Villa 2 v Manchester United 2. In what turned out to be a very frustrating and in the end a disappointing evening. I have to look at all the positives after so many recent poor performances.
In my opinion, tonight was our best team performance under Ralf since he took over. Don’t get me wrong, losing a two-goal lead is as annoying as anything and it should not happen. However, overall it was a fair result. We were clearly the better team in the first half and dominated play for so long and created chance after chance.However, towards the end of the first-half and then in the second-half Villa were the better team and unfortunately got what they deserved. Positives for us though were better intensity and better passing (which has been disgraceful recently) whilst actually controlling a game. Something we’ve not done since way before Christmas.
Yes our standards are low, yes we should have seen out the game and got three points, but after so many awful performances since the start of 2022 I’m taking anything positive I can. And for plenty of the game tonight we looked switched on, hungry for the ball whilst looking to be positive and create chances. Greenwood, Elanga and of course Bruno were excellent. De Gea too. Defensive errors from our midfielders and defenders cost us though.

Manchester United 1 v Aston Villa 0. In what was potentially a slippy fixture against Steven Gerrard and his Aston Villa team, we got the win and we’re in to the next round of the FA Cup to face Middlesbrough in a few weeks time.
It wasn’t the greatest game, but then again it wasn’t the best night to be at a football match. A Monday night in January. Disgraceful in my opinion that yet again, games are being arranged for TV at stupid times with no regards for match-going fans at all.
I still made it to the game, all be it in a different seat to my usual one in the Stretford End. It was a good view from where I was too and although United didn’t play brilliantly, there was at least less bad passes from certain players and we didn’t give the ball away quite so much as we have been doing.
I’m worried for Marcus Rashford though, mentally and physically he looks complete done in. It’s now even gone past the having bad game after bad game stage for me. Something is not right at all and I hope he can sort himself out.
As for the rest, no one stood out in particular in what was an average display. We won though and we’re through to the next round of the FA Cup. Which United’s ticket office have already confirmed after an email late last night to inform me they’ll be taking payment for that ticket from my account today. Cheers!

Manchester United 0 v Wolves 1. Yep, yet another dreadful display of so called football from some (most) of our United players last night. Time and time and time again we turn up to watch players that look lethargic and dis-interested from the first whistle. Then their first touch and passing is beyond woeful. This cannot keep happening.
That first half yesterday had nothing to do with not understanding and learning new tactics, because it was just basic error after error from individual players. Wolves created chance after chance because we had no urgency, our first or second touches were bad, misplaced passes and no desire to win the ball back once we’d lost it.
In the second-half we improved, but Wolves got everything they deserved.
Rightfully, Phil Jones is getting lots of praise for his performance as he was clearly our best player. Was he outstanding? I wouldn’t go that far at all, but you know what, he did the basics and he did his job. That’s all we ask for. He won his challenges, he won headers, he marked his man, controlled the ball, made blocks, looked interested and most importantly made simple accurate passes to his team mates. And that’s after not playing for us for nearly two years. Well played David De Gea too.
The fact that Jones is still at the club (nothing against him) sums everything up about United at the moment and what’s gone on in the past with regards to ridiculous contracts for so many players.

Manchester United 3 v Burnley 1. Happy New Year and a win for United to see out what has been another troubled year for our Club. I wish I could say Football Club, but football was unfortunately not our top priority once again due to our owners and all those in charge at the top.
Anyway, a good performance, especially in the first half where we took our chances and basically finished the game with three quick goals. Which meant the second-half was a quiet affair with United controlling and seeing out the game to allow us to finish the year with three important points.
Of course there was still plenty of sloppiness from certain players, which has to be cut out but overall a change in formation from Rangnick and a decent enough performance. Lets hope for a good 2022 on the pitch!

Newcastle United 1 v Manchester United 1. In what is the busiest time of the year for football in England, waiting 16 days to see United play was a real drag. As it turned out, so was our performance last night.
We certainly didn’t look refreshed and ready to go that’s for sure. Quite the opposite in fact with lethargic passing and decision making, but I suppose that’s been ‘our thing’ for most of the season hasn’t it.
I get certain players are just back from injury, we’re learning a new formation, lack of match fitness and the training ground was shut for a number of days, but come on. Every player should be able to look switched on, ready to play and make basic decisions when it comes to passing to your team mates or marking the opposition’s players.
Not a good Monday, roll on Thursday night at Old Trafford. Lets hope we’re up for that!

Norwich City 0 v Manchester United 1. Not the greatest of performances from United in Rangnick’s second game in charge, but a wins a win in this game. Somehow we managed to make Norwich look really good at times as we seemed to reverted back to type from early on in the season with poor defending, marking and passing.
Still, it was only Rangnick’s second game as boss and his first game away from home so we have to be patient whilst he works with the players on a new formation. I still can’t accept basic poor passing though, to me that is always inexcusable.
Anyway, Ronaldo was there to score for us yet again and I’ve now lost track of how many goals he’s now scored for us since his return. What a player!

Manchester United 1 v Young Boys 1. Having already finished top of the group and of course qualified for the next round of the Champions League. Ralf took the opportunity to rest the majority of the first team squad, or at least those involved in the two recent games.
This meant the bench was full of our youngsters, as well as 35-year-old goalkeeper Tom Heaton which was great to see. Along with this was chances for young boys like Amad Diallo and Anthony Elanga who both started. Squad players like Henderson, Mata, De Beek, Lingard, Matic and Bailly also got starts, some performed, some didn’t. As for the first teamers that were out there, Greenwood was excellent, Shaw average but did ok. Wan Bisakka, oh dear.
Anyway, better performance will come, but tonight was all about opportunities for certain squad players and the young boys of Manchester United Football Club. Ralph’s watching lads, take you chance.

Manchester United 1 v Crystal Palace 0. A very good win for United today in a game we did pretty much control all the way through. First though, a very warm welcome to Ralf Rangnick and in his first game we managed to get a clean sheet.
That was the only shock today, Fred scored and with his right foot. I know, gobsmacked. I still worry about Fred and his basic passing, but he is playing okay at the moment, As for the rest, they all played well today, but thankfully our press tactics allowed us not to be put under too much pressure at the back.
A great start for Ralf considering he’s only had one proper training session to work on things and see what players he has and what they can do. Team changes will happen and so will a different style of play, but we still need to be winning games as much as possible whilst we look improve each game.
Mistakes will happen though, defeats will come unfortunately, but as I’ve always said players have to learn from those mistakes. If they don’t then others must be given a chance. Including this week against Young Boys.

Manchester United 3 v Arsenal 2. A weird game and certainly a weird goal that we conceded to begin with, but it was definitely the right decision. I was just shocked in how long it took VAR to check everything. The only thing they really needed to check was when Martin Atkinson actually blew his whistle.
Overall, we weren't great in the first-half, with too many passes given away once again. Fred in particular but he found the crucial pass to set-up Bruno for our equaliser just before half-time.
Second-half was much better and I thought we deserved the victory and the main man Ronaldo stepped-up to score his 800th and 801st career goals. Wow.
Thanks to Michael Carrick for these three games in charge and welcome Ralf Rangnick. Roll on another new era.

Chelsea 1 v Manchester United 1. Despite our early defensive errors in the opening moments today (which has been standard in recent months), overall I thought we performed pretty well. Especially as a back four unit which actually hasn't played together much at all. In fact I honestly thought Shaw and Maguire missing was an added bonus.
Nothing against them personally at all, I want them to get back to their best as soon as possible, but currently they are both way out of form and have been absolutely dreadful recently. It's a chance for others to perform of course though.
I always want us to win, today was no different, but accepting and taking a point today has to be seen as a bonus unfortunately. Considering most expected us to get beaten easily. Anyway, thanks again to De Gea with some excellent saves today and overall a good point earned. Even though Anthony Taylor made some very dubious decisions (I counted at least three) in the final moments that all went against us.

Villarreal 0 v Manchester United 2. A win for our interim United manager Michael Carrick in charge of his first game. Job done. Well done.
Not a great first half, but it was certainly nice to see a few different faces starting the match, rather than the same old players, who haven’t been playing well.
De Gea made some good saves too and kept us in the game at one point in the second-half. Then some good work by Fred and the subs that came on and the main man Ronaldo was at it again. Great to see Sancho score as well.
Atmosphere sounded superb on the TV from our away fans, super as always and they certainly deserved to see us top Group F and qualify for the Round-of-16. On to Chelsea we go. Where a United win is expected. As always.

Watford 4 v Manchester United 1. Am I sad Ole is no longer our manager. Absolutely. Am I gutted it didn't work out for him as our manager. Absolutely. Was it the right time for him to go? Again, absolutely.
Unfortunately there was nothing more he could do. Wins and results are the one thing we all want, but when performances are as bad as they have been the last two months, there was no coming back from that.
Is he, or was he the major issue at our club, absolutely not. However, he had to finally be relived of his duties I'm afraid. As the buck ends with Ole himself and he'll admit that.
Ole has made numerous mistakes (there is nothing wrong with that) but when you're not learning from those mistakes you have a problem. Starting with why he has continued to play the same four players in a defensive back line, when all of them have been awful all season.
Ole might have gone, but the owners, the club, the board, the coaching staff and of course the players are all part of the problem and this is on their heads just as much.
Anyway, I'll go into Ole's reign in more detail in my blog in a few days time.
