God enters our world by speaking to us as seen in countless examples from Abram until today. He, is not random though, He always speaks with a purpose and with Authority. His authority is always primary, ours always delegated.

The central hope of believers is really Jesus in absolute charge of the universe. However His pattern of charge and control does not work like the way the world controls. He gives himself and those who are His must also give themselves.

Worship, Forgiveness, and the Word. Without those three there really isn't the need for church. Can we do all those alone? No. Worship can be individual, but is more powerful together. The Word can be studied alone, but is safer in Groups. But forgiveness is a relational only task and must be done together.

The Church does not have its own mission, it is God's mission in which He is seeking to redeem the world. When we become His we join into His mission and need to listen and obey.

The church is an outpost of the Kingdom of God. The witness and the lives of the church need to reflect the character of the Kingdom of God.

The scripture and the Holy Spirit are the intertwined witnesses that teach of about our Lord and our life in Christ

The Holy Spirit always calls us deeper into relationship, but before he calls us deeper, he calls us to know God.
The time will come when we can understand what deeper will be, until then we need to live by faith, which is formed in conviction, confession and conversion.

When we think about Pentecost, we imagine the gifts of the Spirit from the lists in the New Testament, but before then the coming messiah is described by how the gifts are used. However, it is not just the gifts in power it is also that they come with the fruit of the Spirit, too.

In order to escape God's wrath it is neccesary to understand how sin breaks relationship, who Jesus really is, and how to come back into right standing in the kingdom of God.

Jesus removes all the barriers to which we might have to correcting our relationship with God. Part of how he does that is to be eternal and not just a human, part of how he does it is also to be fully human.

God's rule of the universe is always about his character and unfailing love. He is personal and knows us well enough to write our personal names.

The word "trinity" is not in the Bible, but that is not the same as saying that the concept is not. God is three in one. He is the Father, who is God for us. He is the Son, who is God with us. He is the Holy Spirit, who is God in us. These ideas are so intertwined that they should not be ignored.

Jesus, didn't just come in order to live among us, nor did it end with the cross, because the death is the real enemy-not sin. Jesus was raised from the dead to conquer death and to make a way for us to live, because goodness isn't the answer–holiness is.

The Triumphal Entry of Palm Sunday is the most remembered rejection in history, not because it is the only one, but because of what Jesus accomplished afterwards.

There are multiple "let no one..." statements in the New Testament. Today's text has let no one take you captive, but not with shackles but with cleaver human arguments. Instead we should go deeper into Christ and God's word until we get used to his voice and respond to it.

God makes a deposit in our world and in us, before we know him. We then trust that deposit before we fully understand what it means. It's opposite of seeing is believing...In Christ Believing is Seeing.

The emphasis of the text isn't just that the message of hope is the same wherever you live. It's not just that savior you experience is the same savior others, around the world experience. It's that the Lord is creating one people who are meant to love like they have been loved.

The fourth Sunday of advent puts the messages together. At first, His birth seemed sudden, But secondly, God had planned ahead. The Hebrew word for create used in this Psalm is only used in conjunction with God's work. It is only God who can create a clean heart. The verb also can be used with cut-off or prune...which is also how believer's keep their heart alive and well, to have parts that are unhelpful pruned off.

One of the central commands of the old testament was to be careful not to be like the nations, who were being pushed out in front of them. However, they always wanted to have a king like the nations. God worked for the years to bring Israel into His kingdom, and with that we arrive with Messiah in front of Sanhedrin.

The first Sunday of Advent this year (2016) has us watching for the Lord's coming. In many of our lives we are excited and at peace with the thought of Jesus' returning--but for others it is not such on awesome thought. It is not a peace filled thought. Perhaps it is time that as we watch for him that we should become truly a people of his presence. That we would prepare ourselves and our lives in such a way that the peace that we have might become a welcoming place for those who do not believe.

How does God keep the humanity project on it's rails? Not by judging, but by entering into a broken situation and giving grace. Now the chosen family is blessed, but not because they had a great patriarch, but because God acted.

The table of nations being 70 means 7x10. That this means that this is the whole world as they understand it. The claim: That everyone in the world is family. Or as Paul says later, "In Christ there is no Greek…no Jew.
The pattern of the garden and the fall replays itself after the flood. Changing the situation will not change the pattern of misbehavior of humans. Still not fully living into the image of God.
God seals them in. The Biblical pattern of chaos-water-salvation is visible here in the first use of the 'ark' (Moses & Covenant are the other two). Chaos is the corruption, Water continues/completes the corruption, God's covenant completes the world change.
The flood story, read in context with The Creation and the Exodus stories, continue to challenge us to understand the story differently than the way that the world tells those same stories. That God sets before us the choice between life and death...hoping that we'd choose life.
Stretching for a savior Lamech asks/hopes that Noah will be the one that gives relief from their pain and toil. Are we still stretching for a savior today?
It is possible to get completely out of whack in the World. The solution is to get yourself right sized into creation and the community.

Gateway sins are unique to each of us. In other words, each of has a trigger where we are likely to fall. However, the story of Cain puts forward a major gateway...the honoring of the Lord in our hearts.
The image is placed at the center of the temple, which is the belly button of creation and it's connection to heaven. But how does it go when the image vacates it's position and then reflects creation back to itself? The fall.
In temples all throughout the ancient world many knew that a temple was consecrated in 6 days with the image being formed in a sacred grove of trees, and that the last thing to be placed in the temple was the Image...just before it rested.
The stories that we tell ourselves about the shape of our world, shape our ethics. When the Hebrews left Egypt their world had been shaped by one story and against that story this Genesis epic is designed to shape their world anew.
Three things from the closing of Romans: 1) you have a part, all those introductions are not just niceties (they are niceties, too) they are a grand inclusion of others into the mission and ministry that Christ gave Paul; 2) we are also called to stay on mission and not get led astray; and 3) The mission is that of Christ's work that displays the Lord of Heaven in the world.
If people are going to hear and understand the Lord, we, His people need to be worshiping him in Spirit and in Truth. Those two must shape us.
There is a difference between won't and can't. At Babel the people said essentially, "I won't move." At Pentecost the believer's had to wait because they couldn't...that is until the Spirit removed that limitation.
To know the Lord is to accept His authority, self disclosure, and track record of trustworthiness. Otherwise you've not accepted Him as Lord.
By foundations, I mean specifically the starting point. The basics of faith. This isn't about maturity yet, this is about setting a foundation so that you can become mature from this point forward. The end tells us that we need to take a certain path along the way, The middle foundations tells us how we need to be together, and the starting foundation is recognition that we are not God and that there is one.
Many hear the first part of Romans 14 as, "Jesus Loves...and you're not to judge." But the back half of the same chapter completes the thought with, "Jesus loves you too much to leave you where He found you." It is not about judging–it is about living into the future that God has/is making for us.
Two statements in the text to pay close attention to. First, who are you to judge the servant of another...they serve at the pleasure of their Lord. Second, Make sure your life of faith isn't a cause of stumbling in others.
Easter Sunday is the day the world changed in three specific ways. 1) Tombs have exits; 2) Actual justice is available; and 3) Don't call unclean what God has cleaned.
Jesus was not really the luminary of the parade that they wanted. He was the savior that they needed though. How do we live in light of that?
For the same reason we don't eat just potato chips the believer needs to eat a better stronger diet than just a few verse...but they also need the power of the Spirit inside them shaping them with that Word.
Obedience and lawful acts are an interesting issue. When we protest are we being unbiblical? I don't think so, but the way we work to promote change is part of not just our witness but is also about Christ's work in the hearts of our opponents.

We've climbed this mountain of Romans up to Chapter 12 and the it feels like we might just slide down the slope and coast for a bit. Except that Paul didn't bring us to this crossroads of material (idolatry>true worship; tablets of stone>tablets of flesh; ethnic divisions>unity; weakness of the flesh>power of the body; and in Adam>in Christ) so that we could miss the understanding that we need to live into the world that God is making for us.
In a world that doesn't sacrifice, what does it mean to be living sacrifices...to live your life toward God, to learn to live in His ways and not your ways, and to be transformed from the world's ways.

Just like the tail end of Job, Paul in Romans has this one little section that talks about why He is so even handed...because we need to not live, act, or believe that we are the people of privilege.
If we have one Lord, who has one people, then we also have one Lord who has one way to treat His people. And in that He is just, we then need to act accordingly.
The ways that we divide ourselves up and distinguish and discriminate...those are the old way to be human. In the Spirit and by faith we need not have nor make them.
It is no secret that we will end up speaking about what we are thinking about. Our tongue is literally the first muscle we move on any thought we might have. What we center our heart on we speak about. When we trust Jesus in our heart and speak about Him, we are that moment saying, "This is what I'm thinking about."
Paul starts the text by speaking about how much he longs for his people to find salvation. He finishes with where salvation is found.
In both a reminder of where we were prior to Advent and in an restart on Romans for '22, an example is made for understanding the differences between the Gentiles and the Israelites from within the prodigal son story.
Why didn't God just interrupt everything and drop Jesus into the Tower of Babel incident? Sodom? Noah? Why wait until Bethlehem?
How many potholes does the Pope mobile go through on a parade route? None, is my guess. Because they pave the way, they prepare in advance, so that when the day comes they have done all that they could.
Advent Sunday starts the season with a call to God to rend the heavens, or as we might say it, "End the world as we know it."
In a discussion on the fairness of God and how to think about who hardens a heart, we find that we have facility and that God also honors that in us.
If you were Abraham's children you'd do the things Abraham did... What is the difference between living according to the flesh and living according to the Spirit?
Paul would rather lose his own place in the kingdom, than lose all the Israelites. When he says this he stands in an intercessory tradition with Moses and Jesus. We should stand in that tradition as well.

Two triplets in the text. One about no more condemnation, and the other about nothing separating us from the love of God.
The groaning of creation under the weight of the misguided image bearers is then taken into our lives as we become aware of the proper way to be image bearers. The Spirit takes up inside us that same weight...just as Jesus took that weight upon himself, on our behalf.
This is not a passive faith, we are called to be involved in the life that God is calling us into, but He has also done the things that we could not have done. Not so we can be passive, but that we can join Him in the work.
The text is about the law, which is always good. Paul exonerates the law and the people, but then condemns sin–just as God had already done
Living a Christian life is just important to live in a coherent, unified manner as having a church be unified is.
Romans 6 has an uneven history of interpretation. Is Paul calling us to mystical union? Is he telling us to be stronger in our resolution to a sin-free life? Well yes, but not because that is how to live in this new life, that is all about what has been done for us by God through Jesus. Rather he is telling us that we have been made different. That we are new. Now...don't submit to, don't go back to the old way–because it won't be the same. You are different.
Until Jesus' act of obedience we didn't have a choice but to do wrong. Now we have a choice, if only we would listen and hear.
As Paul unfolds the Hebrew Shema in Romans 1-4: he talks about the Lord as one and so we are unified. Now in Romans 5 He moves onto loving the Lord with all our heart and all our soul and all our strength. To do that means that we must become the people He has purchased us to be.
No one is native to the Kingdom of God...we like Abraham have to immigrate, through faith. Not by works or signs, but by faith.
Paul gives us a recap of why we shouldn't be ashamed of the Gospel; a view of why this God of ours is the one who has always made a way for us when we could not; and why we often need to adjust our viewpoint so that we'd understand that our God is bigger than our grasp or understanding.
Romans 3:21-26 is one sentence. Listen in as we hear the main subject, verb, and object, explain what God is on about
Does God owe us a favor for all the things we've done? Is God beholden to us. No. May it never be. He is righteous and we need a savior. Still we need a savior
What does a covenant partner do when their partner is faithless. They keep the covenant for the partner. That is what our God has done. He is the God who supplies...supplies what we need, supplies our ability to accept, and supplies a path forward.
Do you have a personal copy of the Bible, two or three maybe? More. It is the most published book in history. We have a lot of access to it. The privileged of being entrusted, just as many before us, but do we understand the responsibility that kind of access carries?
We continue with the problem of the past in Romans and even though we have the word or the "10" Commandments we still have a past. When others who had the "10" brought someone to Jesus to condemn, the only one qualified to throw a stone didn't.
The most incendiary text in Romans is often discounted because of what it says or used non-Biblically as a club of judgement. Neither is the response looked for by the author, who in dealing with the problems of our past needs us to understand that the Bible justifies God's actions in the world, not ours. We need rather, to look inside and pray for both our nation and God's hand of correction in every nook and cranny of our lives.
Pentecost Sunday's new spirit given to Christians is solidly within the tradition of the Old Testament Prophets. That God would be the one in charge of their rebirth both as a nation and a individual people. Just like us.
Paul brings forward three "I ams" in the text. I am under a great obligation. I am eager to share. I am not ashamed of the Gospel. All of these grow out of an understanding of the statement "righteousness of God from faith for faith."
Beginnings are important, they set the tone for what will be said. Paul does that very thing right here in the first 7 verses of Romans. He tells them who he is and what his mission is. Listen in
As we prepare for Romans there is an emphasis on the role of righteousness in the life of a believer. Jesus came to give us a full and amazing life, but as we seek to live we have to choose between righteousness and unrighteousness as the foundation of our lives.
There is a platitude that we're told, "That God will not give us more than we can handle." Which when things seem to be more than we can handle shifts the onus from us to God. He, however is always good and always provides us a way in which we can follow Him.
It is Easter and instead of thinking that there was only that one Easter moment in chronological time, which is true. In Kyros time, there are often individual Easter moments that call us to new life.
Many like the thought that they would have been different on Palm Sunday than the crowd, who not so long afterwards didn't follow through on the big welcome. Jesus calls Peter back into the fold after his denials to love and follow.
Three massive challenges for disciples: 1) learning how to wait for Him; 2) learning how to take direction from Him; and 3) learning how to let him provide.
Jesus meets the disciples where they are...behind a locked door, but instead of berating them He brings them peace. Peace, proof, the Spirit, a call, and forgiveness.
Overcoming our own struggles to belief is often harder than understanding what is going on in the Bible.
Jesus' disciples week had been horrific, they are afraid and now separated from their teacher, when news come that not only had Jesus been killed...now they have stolen his body, too.
Ever asked the question: "Why does a loving God allow ________?" Understanding why the world is shaped the way it is, explains what love actually acts like.
Rethinking and attending to the concepts and theology of the Lord's prayer can reset our lives.
Was Jesus our replacement or our representative at the cross? Many commentaries take one position or the other, but it must be both if we are to understand the happenings that day at the Bema Seat.
Have you ever gotten something that you wanted...but then decided it really wasn't what you wanted? It usually comes with a series of bad decisions that drive us into a really, really bad decision. How do we avoid this? By seeking the Lordship of God, in and through Jesus, in our lives.
It is the expedient thing. The simple way out. The human way, which always leads to the same ol' results...that always needs correcting and repair. Haven't you had enough of the same ole same ol?
Jesus is Lord. It is a statement that rolls so easily off our lips, and yet do we recognize Him as Lord when He is doing the dirty hard work, the less fun things, the submitting to the plan actions that "Lords" don't usually need to do, but have a lackey do?
Have you ever let a sleeping dog lie, or managed to not poke the bear? The Magi get extra points for not going back to talk with Herod.
This is the Sunday of peace. Peace from God comes a the hand and will of God. It is not something that we provide for Him.
Have you recognized that the Lord, God Almighty has noticed you? Not you generally, but you specifically. If you've not noticed that what will it take to stir your heart and head?
He is not slow, but patient. The second Sunday of Advent is about faith. Faith when the time seems so dark. Faith when the Lord seems to not come.

Why doesn't the world around us accept the message of redemption? Often the problem isn't Jesus...oh they love Jesus' behavior, but they stumble over their own internal comparison to His sinless life and–the problem of our witness. Listen in.
Jesus is completely aware of us looking over the disciples shoulders and says as much in the text. Now, how should we live and walk the same journey that they walked...that Jesus walked.
In the same way that Jesus was sent into the world...we are sent. Does that mean that we're supposed to be as dangerous as babies. In the same way that God's word was manifest in Jesus…its supposed to be manifest in us, too. Does that mean that we just read it...or that as we read the word makes God's character grow in us?
This is the 5th, "I'm telling you this now…" statement made by Jesus in John. Please hear me tell you how cool it is that Jesus cares that we know and understand what is coming. Your ability to follow and keep your faith needs these statements. He is taking the time to explain what is happening and what will happen so that we can understand and gird up our loins, if you will.
Ken Bensimon speaks about the troubling process of dealing with yourself and others when you're conflicted. How do we honor others and speak about the issues that we need to speak about?
How can Christians outlast the "world changing moments" that send so many into stress and panic? Keep the throne in view and who is on it.
A tipping point is that place where a boulder is about to roll down the hill...but isn't; it's the place where something is about to happen…but hasn't yet. We need to have God help us choose our roles in the tipping points of our lives, otherwise our society will choose for us.
This is another in a lengthening line of Jesus' I'm telling you this beforehand statements to help us understand what will be happening and what to help up keep the faith in tough times. This time why the world doesn't treat Christians very well.
Life is a series of choices. The Christian life is no different, especially as it refers to how we bear fruit and the process of discipleship. Listen in and see if this is not true.
To finish up this mini-series, we talk about "let" and "lead." We need to be careful where we let ourselves be drug off too, and we need to let the Holy Spirit lead us into truth and peace. That is the gift.
In this second part of not letting ourselves be troubled, trust plays the main role. How do we get in our own way, and so not trust? Listen in and find out what Jesus has done to help with the problem.
How many of you have ever seen a sign and thought, "That really doesn't apply to me?" This little piece of text just before Jesus' arrest is specifically tuned into that part of personal exceptionalism, that we all partake in. Either we're above a particular teaching, or we're outside the grasp of a particular grace. Listen in and see.
We're doing a little bit of demolition at our house. We thought we had finished a room and were ready to paint, actually had painted some of it, when we found some mold in the sheet rock. So we are tearing it out down to the concrete because, you can't leave the mold. It'll just keep coming and it'll make you sick. Your personal preferences are just like that mold. Left untreated they will just keep you walking away like stray sheep. You have to demo that part of your life and submit it to the leadership of the Holy Spirit. You cannot have it left unchecked. It has to go.

Many people so idolize the lives and experiences of the disciples that we don't get a very accurate picture of just how human they were. They were often confused, just like we are. They were often weak in faith, just like we are. They often found it hard to trust Jesus, just like we do. This is about learning how to live in the light, and not in the dark.
There are really two human responses to the call for obedience to God. Neither of them really work for us or Him. But with the Spirit's help we can be transformed into people who follow and trust and obey with a heart after God's own heart.
Many Christians think (and act) as though only the words they say, are their witness about faith. Actually, I think this text is super instructive about how that all works and what we should be doing as people who trust Jesus.
So much confusion reigns in our lives around what it is that we as Christians are supposed to do with the coming Kingdom of God. Listen in as we wrestle with 3 of the main problems that cause us to stumble around in the dark.
What do we do with texts that seem to be saying one thing in the Bible and then in another place seem to be going elsewhere? Careful reading is always in great demand. Lean into this text with me and ask some different questions.
Jesus stayed on track even though the leaders were plotting against Him. How can we learn to not be buffeted around by what is happening...just like Jesus?
We need to walk in the light. In order to do that we need to both be unwrapped and let loose, and learn to walk in the light; through the Holy Spirit.
How is it that some come to faith and others don't? Even when their experiences, backgrounds, or exposures can be equal. Listen in.
Jesus thought of you ahead of time, counted the cost and proceeded to take care of your needs.
As a church we need to develop the habits that help us recognize Jesus's voice when we hear it and to distinguish it from other voices that we hear.
How much time do you think it takes with Jesus, to make you a good witness? How much prep? How much study?

As we await Pentecost, lets not buy into the thought that we prepare ourselves for God's work, but rather lets use this moment to know that God is primary and builds in us all we need.

There are four main fears that get in our way. 1) The fear that there is no mercy (depression...not clinical); 2) The fear that this will end me (dread); 3) The fear that I am alone in this (abandonment); and 4) The fear that there is no justice (anger). Listen in as we walk away or toward our calling.
Many of us struggle to know that we are doing God's will. The pattern of Jesus' life gives us a way to remain in that will and to leave behind many of our old unhelpful patterns.
John 7 is not where most people turn to understand the temptations of Christ, and yet it follows a discussion about bread and a comment that has Jesus with the words of life. Now we have a discussion about whether fame is the goal. Listen in if you will.
Bill Strite stands in for Pastor Dave and speaks about the work of the Bible in our life.
There is always a sticking point. A point where the teaching pushes us beyond where we were willing to go. In the text it's around the source of life as expressed in Jesus as the bread of life. For us it might be politics, ethics, or authority. Discipleship to Jesus, and God's way, always and forever will continually push us to face our sticking point and to surrender our wanting to be the judges of rightness over to God.
If you've seen God at work nearby, then you'll want to join Him there. In order to join Him, you'll have to get out of the boat.
It is so easy to get distracted by the effects of the gifts from God. Like, "He fed us in the wilderness!" and then seek to make him king. He is King and it is right to make him that, but he wants it to be in relationship and through an ongoing relationship, not because you got your belly filled once.
Though He was God, He didn't think that He should leverage that position to or for his own benefit. Have in yourselves the same mind–that of Christ.
The world has heard the gospel's call to unity...as being equal. These are not the same. Jesus doesn't think equality with God is something to be leveraged for his own benefit… This text embodies that discussion. The leaders question his naming himself as equal with God, but all of Jesus' words are not about equality, but unity.
It is a simple command and yet its position near the town leaders response is striking. Did they not know the lame man, who for 38 years had lain on that mat? Yes, surely they did know, and to reprimand him for carrying it when the healing was so obvious is more a statement about them than anything else.
Thirty-eight years lying by the side of the healing pool. Does he want to get well? Does the cities population bear any responsibility to assist one of its own in 38 years?

"Fox Hole" faith is not often a deep faith, but it is an entry point that is better than only looking for miracles. Jesus' comment about a generation who needs to see miracles to believe, isn't aimed however, at the official with the dying son. It is aimed at those of Galilee, who only welcome him because of signs. A person who "only" looks for what Jesus can do will not end up in faith, but a person who sees God at work and then becomes desperate for him will.
Now they believe because of Jesus' words, not just because they trusted the witness of the woman. That is how faith works, we lend our trust to someone who is different until we can get close enough, for long enough that they can see, meet and know Jesus enough to trust him…for himself.
Many are sure that because they perceive God to be afar off, that He is therefore, afar off. That however isn't reality. He is always nearby. So...how should we go about introducing this God, Lord, Savior–Jesus?
It is the time of the year where we, as a church community, remember what it was like to wait for the coming Lord. When He came, He came first to those who were far off. Essentially because there was no one up close. Can you remember the time when you were far away from Jesus?
As individuals answer the call of Jesus within their lives, like Sandi, we feel it is important to put these lives that love Jesus in front of our church.
We often end up in arguments with people just like us...people who don't have the full story. Instead we need to listen to the one who does.
Randy Stebbins fills in for Pastor Dave and talks about what it means to be a Christian that is in the world but not of the world.
The way we have shortened the gospel to make Jesus' death only about sin and us in heaven, should not be continued. Sin, while a major problem it is really a symptom of un-diagnosed, un-resisted, un-noticed idolatry which has its consequences that enslave humans to sin and death. What is the solution...conquer death, and that is exactly what God, moved to do.
In Jesus' own words he describes his mission. When we think of what Jesus was all about, this is the very best starting place.
When Jesus cleanses the temple in Jerusalem, the NLT translates this, "Stop turning my Father's house into a market place." Hmmm. Isn't the Christian story that your heart is now God's home? Isn't that where we buy, sell and trade what for what we want, as well? When we come to church its time to stop treating it so much like we treat Amazon...choosing what we want...demanding our preferences...boycotting worship for whatever reason. Perhaps its time we live out of that cleansed temple life.
Just as an over abundance of new wine was a sign that God was bring about His new creation; so are our lives of submission and transformation the first signs of His new covenant people.
The disciples never really understood the call to discipleship until later in their walk. Just like we don't always understand what it means to be called disciples. Take both the time to let that sink in and to ponder how much bigger the call might be than what you initially thought.

What does John's witness tell us about our witness? Are you the messiah? No. Are you Elijah? No. Are you the prophet? No. Just like us. Admitting that you're not any of those is a start.
Believing in Jesus is a great thing. But it is not the whole story. In order to really live the life that is offered a person needs to both trust and then live into the new reality that God has worked in their life–that is the receiving part of the equation that so many miss.
Have you ever wondered if you might be an appropriate witness for the Gospel? Absolutely, but God always is there ahead of us preparing for His word to be heard. He does that by shaping our lives to fit into a culture, so that we...He might be heard.
The first sermon of the Gospel of John. An introduction to how the first 18 verses work in a chiasm, and the center point or focal point of that chiasm is, "he gave the right to become children of God."

Relationships can be a mess. King David's mythically large life ends–just like many lives do–in a family squabble. Have you ever been in this kind of mess? Ever wonder what you might do in order to avoid it if possible?
David is not a Biblical hero because he slays Goliath. If he is your hero for that you must also include Uriah, Bathsheba, Absolom and the treatment of Saul's descendants into the equation. No, David is not a hero in the standard sense of the word. He is a model though of sticking in–literally hanging in with God through thick and thin–that is the hero part of David. He responds to God. Sometimes he continues digging a hole for himself, but then he comes around. May we come around and stick in there in the same way.
The second most famous King David story (after Goliath) is this one of moral failure. It is often presented as a private matter between two people probably had never met, but...David's advisor Ahithofel was Bathsheba grandfather...Uriah was one of David's mighty men...He sends servants to get her, notes to his army commander, spies to follow him... This is not small issue. It has everyone talking. Most everyone knows each other...

Merib-baal had a great start in life, but when he was young life took a turn for the worse. Later, in 2 Samuel 9, when we see him again he has a new moniker that means "searing disgrace" and he lives in Lo-Debar (or a place we don't talk about.) But David, who has been blessed by God is seeking to bless him for his father, Jonathon's sake.

How do you react when God says, "No!" David is a hero in the Biblical story because of how he reacts when God says no to him...and God does so no, often.
Have you ever seen too much ritual? Too little? Just like God's sovereignty and free will have to be kept in balance to have a good theology. These two ritual and casual need to also be kept in balance.
Ted Pancoast stands in on Pentecost Sunday to give us a preview of his Global Lean Leadership Summit talk. In this talk Ted asks these three questions: 1) What impact have you been having in the world? 2) Are you happy with that impact? and 3) What impact do you want to have?
This is a response to a question that was asked during the announcement time of this same service.
The whole reason that boneheaded people are included in the Bible, is that we have to interact with them here and now. Boneheads are part of our everyday life, which is exactly where God is doing His redemptive work in our lives.
Jesus came that we might have life, and to the fullness of that life. What that doesn't mean is that everything is always perfect. Perfect in a rub some dirt on it, way. That isn't perfection, it is disconnection. It isn't real. In the same way thinking that everything is the end of the world isn't true either. But, God calls us to have a full life–a fully connected life and if that is the case than we will need to experience grief and joy and so much more.
Some commentaries call her the disciple too important to lose. Others say that there really isn't anything to the text. I say it isn't just about what it says but especially in this case it is about where it is located in the rest of the story.
Acts 9 starts out with Saul threatening the church, and then he meets Jesus on the road in the Shekinah Glory, but the followers will have nothing to do with him...until Ananias brings him into the community. The same thing happens to him in Jerusalem...until Barnabas does the same. Saul is a Pharisee too important to lose.
Then Aeneas is healed by Peter. It is not just the Pharisees that are important it is the less able bodied Israelite, as well.
Then Dorcas is healed. It is not just the Pharisees and the lame males, but also the females are too important to lose.
Acts 10 follows with Cornelius the Roman Centurion. It turns out that God is no respecter of our human divisions...even the Pagans who soil the reputation of Israel are too important to lose. Each time someone is included into the Body the Body is blessed. Perhaps God is telling us something.
How does God change us from doing what ever is our natural inclination to living out a kingdom life. First He pours love and generosity over us, then He gives us examples of how we might live differently, and then we are given the opportunity to both live that new life and be an example ourselves.
Have you ever had to live in enemy territory? Maybe you just feel like it. When you read this text on the future King David living among the Philistines, don't moralize the text, which would remove mercy and God's sovereignty from the story. Also, don't secularize it, which would honor how smart and brave David was being and trivialize God. Instead, let the text stand with you and teach your life about how one might live among those whom disagree, because we all live in Ziklag. We all live in this world and as Christians that means we live both among the enemy and as an outpost of our Lord.
There are many attitudes that we can consider ourselves prisoners to...fear, disappointment, regret, and more. We can even be prisoners to our ideas of what we think will be, especially if that idea is not from God, but from ourselves. I invite you to exchange whatever prison that you have for the hope that God implants within us. May you become a prisoner of that hope.
When Jesus came into town riding a donkey. It meant that he came in peace.
When the people waved palm branches and yelled Hosanna. It meant that they saw him as a king and wanted him to save them now.
That is the easy part of Palm Sunday. The hard part is that the saving that Jesus was going to do...wasn't going to come in the way they wanted it.
What will you do when your salvation doesn't come in the form you were hoping for? Well, if you're desperate you'll take it. If not...you might just yell crucify him.
CS Lewis' famous argument that Jesus was either a Liar, Lunatic or Lord (which wasn't initially his argument), was in response to a popular thought–that Jesus was just, or only, a good moral teacher.
Many people have thought many things about who Jesus is. They thought he was John the Baptist, Moses, Elijah, Jeremiah or any number of prophets. But when Peter called him Lord and son of the God, Jesus explained that this answer was only possible through the assistance of God's revelation.
Who you say he is, then is as much a function of God's witness in you as it is a paradigm that will cause you to act and live in any such manner.
When you read the Bible, do you find yourself in the story? Here are three stories that might help you find yourself there. First, Matthew 19:13-15: Jesus welcomes the little children. Second, John 8:2-11: The woman caught in adultery. and Third, John 3:1-15: Nicodemus and Jesus speak about being reborn.
It is my hope that you might find yourself in the story, that you might see that there is correction in His teaching, and that you would always see yourself as person in need of a savior.
What does it mean to live every day for Christ? Many never even ask the question as they prepare for Sunday to be different, fancier, more super substantial than the other six days of the week. Instead of thinking that faith is different for different days of the week; think of your faith as the same faith that brought you to repentance and the days as separate and distinct from your faith--as places to express that faith.
The Holy Spirit works in these three main ways as a spotlight ministry. First the spotlight is at work in us calling us to be different than we used to be. Second the spotlight is at work on us calling us as witnesses to the work He has done in us. Thirdly, the spotlight is at work through us showing us where we can join God in His work around us.
Cracker Jack boxes have the prize inside. Don't you know that you are the Holy of Holies...the place where God dwells?! You have the prize inside and that prize transforms us.
Butterfly. No body asks the new butterfly, "Did something happen to you?" Instead they ask, "What happened?" The transformation is obvious. Caterpillars don't fly and Butterflies don't crawl unless they have to.
Witness is the primary terminology for a believer. The only question is whether or not you'll be believable or not. So, go live with integrity into the life that God is giving you.
There are multiple ways to do church, but not all of them are positive. Most are negative. Here is one way that I know, try it.
There are a variety of issues in our culture now that as Christians we should not learn or copy. This is the same as it has been for centuries, but sometimes we forget that we are supposed to live as an example of an alternative to what the world says. As a general rule alternatives have to be different...or stunningly, they are not alternatives.
The covenant relationship between Jonathon and David is a picture of the New Covenant, where Jesus trades garments of righteousness with us at the cross. Take a listen.
Where in your life is your understanding of yourself dominated by the giants in your land, or more specifically in your head? God understands that there are giants in the land, but that the way He sees you is far more important than how those giants do.
What do you do when you know you've been asked to do something, but can't do it...yet. This is the spot that David is in as he enters Saul's court. He has been anointed king, but will not be king for another 20 years or so. How he serves and struggles with being God's person is a place where we can enter into the story and find ourselves.
Samuel needed a reset on how he sees people. Jesse's family needed a reset on how they sees people. Bethlehem needed it. We need it, too. We need to look at people not through the ideas of popular culture, but to look at their hearts.
Three things in the sermon this morning. First, there is a need to locate David in the story of Israel. Second, do we understand what it means that to be a person after God's own heart? It doesn't mean that they do everything right, clearly David did not do everything right. No, but he did repent quickly. That is the key to understanding a relational God and His people. Third, I hope that you will join me along this journey and develop eyes and ears to see a God at work in your world.
Ted Pancoast stands in on this last Sunday of the year and asks the question, "How are you nice?" This is not a how to be nice, but rather how am I nice and is it my default response?
What in the world does God need to overcome? He could overwhelm anything and anyone, except that He does not violate our freedom. He then overcomes our perceptions of Him with the presence and life of Jesus; so that we might know God for who He is. He overcomes our anxieties about who we have been, who we will be, and if it is good enough with mercy and love from the cross of Jesus; so that we might know rest in Him. He also overcomes our judgment of ourselves and others with forgiveness; so that we might forgive and be forgiven.
He is truly and overcoming God, who waits for our barriers to come down; so that we might know Him, receive mercy and love, and know forgiveness.
In the text there is an amazing array of mighty deeds that God will be re-creating, but that is not the most astounding deed that He does. The most astounding action that God does is that He includes us in the work. We have a role. The red carpet is for us.
If you have ever wondered if God is at work in the world, look into your own life and the lives of those nearby. If you can see God at work in you or others, than know that as proof that God is active everywhere.
As we enter into the Advent season, we figuratively join those who waited for God to enter the world at the first Christmas. At the same time we wait for His second Advent hoping to not make the same mistakes that previous generations made–and so we try not to focus upon what the world is coming to and fix our eyes on the one who has come into the world.
Many hope for thankfulness to come from their devotional disciplines, but that is opposite of how it works. Knowing that you have been given a gift beyond your own reach--knowing that deep in your heart creates a thankful heart. Which in turn can and should be the source of those disciplines. So...is it possible to train your heart and eyes to see the work of God's grace around you?
During the closing of the book. John shows us that there are three concepts that we need to pay attention to at all times...not just the time at the end. 1) That near is always in relation to His presence and salvation is always near; 2) Don't add or subtract from the message that God has given to you...to us; and 3) Worship God and God alone, do not worship signs, angels, musicians, speakers. Worship Him.
Don't be confused God isn't making all new things...that is not what the text says. What it says is that God is making all things new. He is renewing everything, not throwing it away to start over. This is a great mercy for us. Starting from Genesis 3, He has always been working toward Revelation 21 and beyond.
In a letter written to the church to keep it from slipping off track. Bill Strite (filling in for Pastor Dave) emphasizes the love of Christ that under girds our lives and that knowing Him keeps us on track even now.
If we are to understand of heaven (and our future). The box of our understanding of what heaven will be like needs to have these items removed. So that we can see our future more clearly.
There are three things that matter in this text before you can preach judgement from it. First, the throne makes it's seventh appearance of the book and all of them need to be seen together, to be fully understood. Second, The one who is on the throne is both God and Savior. And third, your life matters here because integrity matters; witness matters; sincerity matters in all issues–especially in faith.
There are three traits that every passionate follower, that I have ever met, has.
They are: 1) Radically contented in God. This statement characterizes this contentment, "I want everything the God has for me; I don't want anything that God doesn't have for me."
2) Devotedly a Disciple, spending enough time in the word and in prayer that their relationship with God has begun to transform their mind and their hearts; and
3) Eagerly Available to the Holy Spirit. This is the whole heart of giftedness within the Christian life. Will you say yes, follow through, and joy giving.
One thing that people forget about Revelation and thinking about the Millennium is that the Bible never, ever, never...not once ever says, "Here is a measuring stick for someone else's faith; go beat them up." Instead it calls upon us to be good students of the Bible and to listen-with grace-to other good students of the Bible. Oh, and to always, always, always, keep our eyes upon Jesus.
Yea, lets do that.

The text includes the fifth opening in Revelation, each one shows us a picture of Jesus and a truth that already is, but that we don't always perceive.
Silly in love with God--that is the terminology that I'd use to describe most engaged people. They're silly in love. They have set aside all of the other options and chosen this one. That is what is going on in this text. All the other options of our affection have been removed and now only YHWH remains and we change our language. Now we specify Him with the speaking of Hallelujah rather than the more generic praise the lord.
What should you do if you happen to find yourself in a place like Babylon? Do you know how to test the temperature of the water that you swim in? Here are 4 ways to maintain your connection and hope.
One of the most sobering texts to read about how the Wrath of God is poured out upon those with the mark of the beast--with the character traits of the beast. It is the third set of 7s, and this time from the Throne's perspective. Here are 5 things we as followers of Christ need to hear and learn.
The text talks heavily about the marks upon God's people's forehead and for that of the world's people. What are all those marks about? What are the marks. For God's people there are 7 marks given for what His people will be like.
Questions about how to avoid being deceived in this world? Wondering about that number in chapter 13? Here is a bit of a primer on that text around the second beast.
The beast of the sea is a presented in Revelation as a parody of the Christ in Revelation 5, but instead of sacrifice the beast (the machinations of the world's powers) use force. Those who call Christ and the Kingdom of God must not use that methodology to coerce, because God does not coerce.
How do we as Christians get through this messy world. Through the testimony of Jesus, through knowing the truth, and sharing the new life that His gospel brings to us.
Often people think that it is the Law and the Prophets is the witness and way to share the good news, but it is only the way if it is delivered in repentance.
Many who first come to God often think that everything will be fun and happy during their discipleship journey, but that is not actually the promise that Jesus makes. The promise of the Christian walk is that it will be worth it. Not necessarily easy, not necessarily fun...but so, so worth it.

Learning how to give well is a matter of following the examples in our lives. First we see people that give; then we receive so abundantly the giving that God does in us; and then we participate in that giving as it flows through us to others.

What in then world does it take to get our attention? God will go to great lengths to convince people that they should change their ways. But, before people can change their ways it is most helpful to have an example of a changed life. That is the essence of renewal and revival. The deep work of the Spirit inside God's people; in order that they might then assist the redemption of then more people.
In the midst of everything happening on Earth, there in Heaven, where everything is decided, there is silence and the prayers of the people of God are reverberated back. Now our hopes and dreams are magnified to great effect in our lives and those for whom we pray.
Pentecost is the birthday of the church. God's purchase of His people - warranted by the presence of His Spirit within.
In faith a gift has been given. However, many guard it as Beauty and the Beast's Beast guards his flower, by keeping everyone away. This is not how faith is guarded. It must be exercised, brought out into view, shared. It is in that way that the family of faith lives and grows and has its being.
God seals His people and that does two things. 1) it enables them to stand at the interface between heaven and earth...not to stumble but to stand, because the Christian is that interface; and 2) this sealing activates their faith to function. The Holy Spirit's presence in them assists and activates their faith, so that they can be faithful even in difficult circumstances.
God is not impatient with us, for our own sake, but rather even when He punishes it is only to get our attention and to bring us to repentance. What will it take to get the earth's attention? What will it take to get our attention? mine?
What does it mean that at the throne is the lamb...not a lion. It changes everything about how we need to understand power and its use.
Revelation 4 and 5 are parallel to and follow Isaiah 6. There is a throne in heaven and it is not empty nor has it ever been.
As the stone that blocks the tomb of Jesus is rolled away it reveals a Lord that is greater than death. At Easter death actually no longer has the last word on our lives. Jesus does, but only if we allow the stone to be rolled away...only if we unlock our hearts...only if we choose God as our God and stop living for the world.
For all the prophecy and study that the Jews had regarding the coming messiah, no one got that correct, and then after he came as he taught in and around the area, they still didn't get it straight. But he did. Jesus knew what he was doing and in spite of everyone else's confusion he was not confused. This is the correct light to see Palm Sunday in.
Amen means that's the way it is. Jesus is the faithful witness to who God is; but He isn't looking for our mild approval. We are invited into His new creation and yet our zeal lags and when that happens we are no longer part of the healing or the refreshing that God brings to His people.
There are two possibilities for what the open door might mean. 1) a door for the word of God to go through; or 2) A door that allows anyone to be in relationship with God. There really is no choice here, they are linked--in order for us to be on mission we need to be in relationship.
Sardis is not a church beset by false doctrine or practices. It is far too dead for that. Sardis has peace, but the peace of the cemetery. As children of God though Jesus is calling them to 1) wake up; 2) strengthen what remains of their faith; 3) Remember what they originally received; 4) take hold of that and cling to it; and 5) repent.

There are 4 types of theological Trojan Horses, 1) shiny and new; 2) minimizing; 3) majoring on the minors; and 4) malignant. Each of those Trojan Horses are cul-de-sacs that derail our faith. The only way through, around, or past those is to keep your eyes on Jesus, who is the Son of God.
In Pergamum there were a couple of ideas floating around that still negatively impact our value as witnesses. The first was this: that as God's chosen, covenant people they could be permitted a few lapses in judgement...It was okay. The second was similar: Compromise a little here so that you can be freed up to do God's work...it is a necessary evil. Witnesses, though are believable based upon their perceived integrity. If we compromise there our usefulness as witnesses is also compromised.
The letter to the church at Smyrna focuses on the need to rely on faith. The community loved to be first, but faith is not about getting there first (that is prominence). Faith is about steadfastness and lasting it through the trials. Do we have that faith?
Karen McCue brings a message to the church about each of our need to act upon God's call in our lives. We each have skills. We each have opportunities. Lets take advantage of both.
What is it like to be told that you have done everything right? The church in Ephesus essentially gets told that in Revelation 2. They are hard working, they are patient, and they are orthodox. That is amazing and yet they have forgotten about love. You've done everything right, but for the wrong reasons. It is love that first brought you into God's church and it is love that attracts others.
Many people that I speak with see Jesus in one of two ways. He is either "What a friend we have in Jesus" or the "Lord of All Jesus" Revelation 1:9-20 asks us to hold both of those in tension. We need both and so it is important to understand Him as both.
Starting with the legend in the corner of the map, is what this is. We are starting the book of The Revelation of Jesus Christ, a book that is misused more often, it seems, than handled with care. The whole of God's self disclosure in Jesus is already contained in the other 65 books of the Bible. There is nothing new here, but there is a new way to see it.

But then, God will lead us in path of righteousness for His name's sake. He really does hear us. He really is at work in this world. He is really God with us. He will even provide guidance along the way. Joseph is heard and guided multiple times. How is God guiding you?
After months of being mute, Zechariah's song is not really about his newly named son...but the cousin who is God's great redeemer. As he sings about redemption from darkness, he also sings about redemption for relationship and then the guidance and help we need to get from the darkness to the light.
Mary's absolutely unique experience of having Christ formed physically inside her becomes the model for Christ formed spiritually inside each of us as we choose to say, "May it be to me according to your word."

There are two concepts in Jude that we must take the time to understand. The first is that we can be "kept" by Jesus and that He as Lord is able to make that happen. The second is that we must earnestly contend for the faith--by showing mercy. Showing mercy that was first shown to us because we are subjected to the same judgement that others are. He is Lord, and we are not.
The Ordinary Christian life is one shaped by us cooperating with the Holy Spirit in and through our lives. That means Integrity, the letting your yes be yes and your no be no. It also means that when you are hard pressed you pray for guidance; when you have courage you praise; when sick prayers for healing; and when you need forgiveness you ask. The righteousness of God then being formed inside you will avail much and love will cover a multitude of sins. It is the ordinary (quite extra ordinary) life of a Christian.
Is money your first fall back item for your security? Yes, I am sorry to say that it might not actually provide that coverage for you. However, it most certainly will drive the way you treat others and when the Lord is near that behavior might just cry out (give witness to the acts) to the Judge.
Instead, you might trust in the one who can get you through the trial...He is the righteous one who did not resist. He is always merciful--and trustworthy.

If the Bible defines the "world" as an organized system working against God, then it is no secret that friendship with the world is enmity with God. But what is the source of that desire to be friends with God's enemy? This text diagnoses the problem within us and leads us to a solution.
James' exposition of the Jesus' sayings continue as he takes on, "It is what comes out of an earthling that defiles them."
Certainly, we think of the big sins as evil and leading to death, but what of the times when we have those little deaths. A minor non-life giving moment. How do we move beyond those moments to when God gives a river of life--that spring up, oh well--life that we so desperately need.
What is an essential characteristic of being a teacher in the church. James suggests that being able to work towards controlling your tongue, that is not just about cussing, but also about gossip, maybe even throwing shade. In truth though the reason that a person might start to work on this is because they have begun to know God's character, and that character has begun to rub off on His people.
Many people think that their faith is a matter of right belief, which it is in part, but long before that it is trust in God through the person of Jesus. That is a faith that works, or produces a life change. If your faith is only intellectual than your faith does not work...it will not function. Faith that works also does the work of the Father, because it sees who the Father is and imitates that.
There are a couple of ways that Christians try by their own efforts to create the Kingdom of God. Last week the text discussed anger and justice, this week the way we show favoritism does match God's glory-which in this way is His reputation.
Faith in Christ involves more than listening to what God has to say, it includes...no requires that we act upon what we have heard. But humans don't really listen well so they have to be told to be quick to listen and slow to speak.
We continue with the agenda of our faith as the Book of James describes and compels us.
The first thing maturity brings into our lives is that excuses don't seem to work. We stop blaming others and start giving credit Every good thing in your life comes from God. Every good thing you do for others you do for/with God. Every good thing from God is for you and on its way to another through you.
We start a new series this week with James. Faith works in your life to produce hope out of your praise of the one true God.
God's devastatingly persistent grace continues to pour down on and through us. It effects every thing we do and everyone we are. Even when we groan in our current situations, we like all of creation which groans, too, cannot be separated from his devastatingly persistent grace and care.
When God speaks into your life it is always for two reasons. First because your situation needs to be changed, so he speaks to change your life and give you a better life. Second, he doesn't call you into that new life just so you can fit in there, but because he wants your voice and life heard there, too.
Baptism is about your identification with Jesus and His identification with you. He identified with us in both the incarnation and at the cross, Will you identify with him where ever you are…what ever your circumstances?

This is how God moves us in community from "I don't get it" through, "I still don't understand, but wow," until we "praise God."
Ken Bensimon spoke this Sunday, there is a technical issue with the first 4 minutes, so we join him in progress, as he talks about what it means to be in Christ and live.
There are three major holy days in the Christian year. 1) Christmas because we needed first had experience of what God was like. 2) Easter because once we found out what God was like we knew we needed some assistance and so He forgave. 3) Pentecost because we had no way to live appropriately without the presence of the Holy Spirit in us. That means that we need to live out his call in us with streams of living water flowing from our lives.
It is not really a question as to whether you or I will deny Jesus…we will. We will either deny him by not doing what we have been asked, by doing the opposite that we've been asked, or by not standing with him in his trials. (Peter does all of these in this text.) The question that Jesus has is this: When he returns will he strengthen the people?"
When I return will I? When you return will you?
Unity within the Body of Christ is the main reason people will understand why Jesus was here on Earth. Communion is to be understood, at least in one aspect, as a witness of our unity with Christ for ourselves and in our communities; both physically and spiritually.
Chicken Little seems to be all around us these days. Always with the same message, "The sky is falling!" No. No it is not, but even if it was Jesus has some words in this text regarding how we should act. Don't believe them instead trust that God is Lord. Don't follow them Instead trust that God is forming a people for himself--in you. Don't panic, instead know that God has your future in his hands, too.
It is relatively common to find yourself "debating the faith" with another person. Next time you do, however remember these three things 1) Pat attention to the relationship and honor it in Christ; 2) Don't major on the minors (its too easy to get lost in a distraction instead of following God); and 3) Remember that God sees their heart and yours. We don't always see either but he does.
There is an old saying that to the pot it doesn't matter if the rock falls on it, or if it falls on the rock. Jesus' interaction with the people in the Temple between Palm Sunday and Good Friday is a reflection on his role as the Savior. The kingdom comes to those who seek God's help, calculating how much to turn over to him does not work into the equation.
One of the goals of "church" is to see the Holy Spirit working in lives and recognize that work. Danny Holmes' life has been changing dramatically through the last year. This interview with him is that effort on our behalf to recognize God at work.

Easter starts for many of us with an empty tomb, but for the disciple Easter Sunday started with them either hiding or bringing spices to the tomb. They all were mourning. They mourned many things and thoughts as their preconceptions were left at the tomb, if you will. Then in the midst of that submitting our minds to him as well he meets them and their hearts are set to blaze. What do we need to leave at the tomb? So that we might have a heart on fire?
Jesus cleanses the Temple in Jerusalem following the palm processional. Its as though he is performing a exorcism, sweeping the house clean and then occupying it afterward (as he talked about in Luke 11:16-28). But Jerusalem does not recognize the moment of his visitation and so it is worse for them than before. Will we notice the moment of our visitation and become a prisoner of hope (Zech 9) instead of all the other things that we can become captive to?
These five sections of the gospel are not read together often, but they need to be. What we think and experience internally effects our actions and thoughts. Without Christ the seeking of justice sooner or later boils down to doing what we want. With Christ seeking justice is transfigured into the pursuit of mercy--initially for ourselves and then for others--because we see justice at the cross and then know our need for mercy.
Wondering what the signs of the end are? Jesus in the text says that the only sign will be the vultures circling the carcass...
Take a listen and see if we instead of checking for signs all the time, maybe we could keep our eyes on Jesus and we could stay out of such cul-de-sacs.
What does the Lord require of us? is not the same as, "Why aren't they playing my favorite songs?" or "Why doesn't the pastor dress correctly for me?" Those are questions of personal preference and to seek only those is not only an expression of consumerism within the church, but it is serving yourself. And no one can serve two masters. They will either love the one and hate the other or vice versa.
"As I come and as I go; right now and always; I will trust in him."
Often in our lives we are doing "Not Bad" or in other words our focus is in a bad spot and we have not gotten there yet. Today, I ask that you set your eyes on a higher target. So that in all your comings and goings you will trust in him.
Many look to the Bible to find out what they can and cannot do, but the Bible does not work well for that purpose. Really, truly like the bad manager in this text that has a visitation from his lord--the Bible's best function is to bring you into one on one contact with your lord and maker. How will you react to such a visitation? Will you change? Will you mock?
There are three ways that God always locates his lost ones. 1) He goes after them; 2) He has searches carefully (or with a plan); and 3) Compassion is always included.
Can you think of a time when you went astray and God came looking for you? Remember the love and care that he showed? Hold onto that feeling and live toward others out of the memory.
There are three reason formalism fails to produce the results we're looking for in relation to God. 1) Formalism fails when we begin to recognize that it is ineffective in our lives and we quit; 2) Formalism fails because God will have none of it and he knows who has chosen content over form; and 3) Formalism fails when we have a crisis in our lives because it has produced nothing real.

The kingdom of God grows in our hearts like yeast that starts out small, but works its way through the whole batch. In the same way the behaviors of the kingdom become habits that crowd out old (non-helpful), non-healthful behaviors. Judgementalism is crowded out by humility; rule keeping is crowded out by mercy; Useless debating is crowded out by hungering and thirsting for righteousness; and fear is crowded out by listening to God's opinion.
When Jesus asks for fire to come down and that he is going to call for division, it is imperative that we look at all the texts that help shape our understanding of the concepts being presented.
Take a look at 1 Kings 18 and 2 Peter 3 for the context and hear him call for us to quit waffling between two opinions.
Who made Jesus Judged and executor between us and our relations? Well in truth God did, and says as much in many places, but that does not mean that we have submitted our hearts to him in that role. Have you taken the time to make him executor of your heart?
Each of us is playing a tape (mp3 for some) in our head of what we are worth. We get that recording from the source we listen to the most. If we listen to people, who devalue us, we will play that over and over in our heads. But if we listen to how God speaks to us, we will hear a different message. Listen to him.
There are at least a few steps that we go through when we are as Colossians 1:13 puts it transferred from the kingdom darkness into the kingdom of his dear son. Paul, didn't come up with this stuff on his own, Jesus outlines the process in these three sections of Luke. Take a gander.
When the disciples ask Jesus to teach them to pray, its not just that they want the words that he has, its that they want the pattern of his life to rub off onto them. This new pattern of life and care that Jesus has has made an impact on their lives. It is a nearly perfect example how we can let our light shine for others to see. That is assuming that we have a light to share.
Did any of the ghosts from Dicken's Christmas Carol visit you this year just prior to Christmas Day? Perhaps, figuratively they did if you've been chasing recreating memories from past years or seeking to avoid them this year or in the future. Instead of worrying how about entering into the ever deepening relationship that God offers.
Immanuel: is as much a name as it is God's chosen method for interacting. As God comes to Joseph in a dream, he brings Joseph more than a change in direction. He also brings him the beginnings of a new hope which can take root in his life.
We need to see the work that God has done in our lives in our rear view mirror. This empowers us to move toward a fuller understanding of the freedom that comes from our redemption. Freedom in Christ 1) Allows us to live in the gap between accepting God's plan and the fulfillment of it; 2) Allows us to let others live in that same gap; and 3) It is in that gap, between forgiveness and freedom, that the Holy Road exists.
How does the Spirit of God discipline us to turn from our incomplete vision of hope during this advent? As we watch for Him and His presence in our lives we are coaxed into turning from our vision, our hopes, to a better more complete vision and hope. Will you be turned?
The first Sunday of Advent this year has us watching for the Lord's coming. In many of our lives we are excited and at peace with the thought of Jesus' returning--but for others it is not such on awesome thought. It is not a peace filled thought. Perhaps it is time that as we watch for him that we should become truly a people of his presence. That we would prepare ourselves and our lives in such a way that the peace that we have might become a welcoming place for those who do not believe.
One question that we find Jesus asking is, "Why are you here?" What have you come to Jesus for? It is the central question that we as the people of God need to remember. Around Jesus there are always three groups of people; trusters (disciples…), the crowd and the judgers (pharisees…). Everyone kind of starts as one of the crowd and it is through the witness of Jesus and the experience of the individuals that moves them one way or the other. Why are you here? to accept the offered relationship with God or to self justify? Do you know yet?
Three concepts have come forward in Luke 1) That the people God is forming is a fellowship of the mended; 2) That Jesus is "gospelizing" humanity; and 3) You've never seen the wind, but you have seen the effects of the wind. It is in this way that people see Jesus/the Holy Spirit at work in our lives.
Two wonders that never cease to amaze. The First is the that there is a God of the universe that is completely, utterly in charge; and Second he has done a work in your life that make you a wonder as you stand beside him. This episode includes a reading of "The Ragman" by Walter Wangerin Jr. (1984 HarperSanFransisco / Zondervan).
With the parable of the sower, Jesus shows these three concerns. 1) for the word of God as seed; 2) that it be spread and the ground prepared; and 3) the character of those who receive the word and grow to maturity. These thoughts are also bracketed by a description of those who have received and then afterward by the discussion of who are his family--those who hear and do.
Jesus, often shows us our problems or our lack of vision by showing us others, or by showing us the same thing over again. John the Baptist, the pharisee, and the wayward woman all need to see their need and debt. Which will love Jesus more? The one who sees and comes.
Wonders abound around us, even though we rarely recognize them as such. Jesus healed most everyone he came into contact with, some are raised from the dead, but the wonder that was his priority was making it so that we (and everyone else that have believed) might have new life. That is a wonder. It is a wonder that only matters, though, if the biggest wonder of them all is true...that we have a God who cares and is involved in the lives of people.
Children of the father live different than they used to. First they forgo judgment and condemnation; and second they replace that with forgiveness and giving. It will not happen without the leadership and teaching of Jesus, as we clear the undergrowth of our lives and find a proper place to place our foundation of life.
Luke is the heaviest of the gospels on ethics. The how now should we live book. The don't tell me what you believe--show me with your life book. After calling the disciples, Jesus in a crowd, looks at them and says…

Our lives are always faced with a choice to judge or to love. Jesus always calls us back to the old ways, the ways of God, the way of sacrificial love and care.
Which is easier to say, "Your sins are forgiven." or "Rise up and walk." Jesus has authority to say both. What follows is a frank discussion on how forgiveness plays a role in our healing and the healing of others.

Jesus reads Isaiah 61:1-2 in the synagogue. What does it mean? What should it mean that it is fulfilled in their hearing? What if it doesn't mean that we are gonna get ours and our enemies will finally get what is coming to them?
It is the proclamaition of forgiveness and restoration...even for the one who has done you wrong.
Just as Jesus faces the same tests that the ancient Israelites also faced in their exodus from Egypt, we also face those tests. Will we trust God with our bodily needs? Will we worship that which is true? Will we seek to make God prove it, when things go wrong?
How will we pass these tests? As God's beloved children-just as Jesus did. Especially since the designation was bestowed prior to the testing.
In the midst of Pax Romana John the Baptist proclaimed that a stronger one, a more important one was coming. Lest we get too comfortable in Pax Americana, its time for us to level the rough spots and fill in the pot holes and make the landscape of our lives ready for this one who brings true and lasting peace.
Salvation is often the only concept that we consider, when we talk about faith, but forgiveness and reconciliation are the door--the entry point to a full and free life. Here we get to overcome the barriers that cause us to struggle.
Your life isn't fine…and then interrupted by God. Your life is broken…and then mended by God's gracious kneeling presence into your situation.
Bill Strite standing in for Pastor Dave: Most of us without thinking about it view blessings as what happens around us, but then when life goes awry it feels like we might have lost God's blessings. The blessings of God are mostly spiritual in nature and cannot be taken away from us
"If you will not go with us, don't make us go." As God forms a people for himself. He breathes his Spirit into us. Sometimes that is as incomprehensible as the wind to others, but to his people it is growth. Challenging and difficult, but worth it.
Being a Christian doesn't make you perfect, instead it asks you to live into a new standard. (This is Ted standing in this Sunday for Dave.)
The pattern by which we live our lives matter. Does your pattern tend to hide part of yourself from God? If it does than that also is a pattern of truncated relationship with Him. Bring your whole self to the relationship and his shield will be around you as you live an authentic life .
The longing of our hearts is often for a better time, a better place, or a better us, we should however, redirect that longing to God. The one who satisfies.
As we sing about what God has done, ascribe to him the work he is doing, and let him be in charge of our future and the judgement (in equity) we enthrone him in our hearts as he is enthroned currently in heaven. (I used the term tense in this sermon in-appropriately for English usage, for that I stand corrected.)
Pentecost: the third of the three major Christian holidays (Christmas God's incarnational presence teaches us that we can know God; Easter God's cleansing of us makes us able to become His people; and Pentecost God's enabling presence makes us able to live the life that breaks down barriers, accepts others, and are mediators of His love to the world.)
If Psalm 8 is Genesis 1 in song, then we need to pay attention to the position of humans is the story. As mediators of God's presence to both each other and to all creation, we need to take seriously the pre-requisite of right relatedness. Both to God, each other, and to the world.

Jesus tells us how to interpret the Holy Week events with a parable. They did not, even with the wealth of revelation they had received.

Ephesians Sermon Series #10: The gifts for a healthy church. Somewhere between Isaiah 6 and Revelation 4 the church changed radically, from trying to do things to please God to working alongside God as He seeks to make his kingdom come about to its full potential. The gifts are how that is done. How we join Him.
Ephesians Sermon Series #9: That there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God the Father of all should be seen as a hope for each of us.
Ephesians #7: A life being formed into God's life will regularly slip into prayer. This is the third guide to Godliness. 1) is that we would grasp who God is and what he has done; 2) that we would live lives of adoration toward God; and 3) that we would be changed. It is not possible to absorb all the love and mercy that God has without it beginning to change us.
Ephesians #6: You, as you are changing into the fullness of his people are his mysterious plan revealed to the world. I know it sounds unlikely, but this is the way it is. As broken as we might be, that we might be the fulfillment of his wise plan, is the reality of it all. Don't lose heart.
Ephesians #5: Peace with God leads us to seek peace with those who are our neighbors. God never really wanted a sanctuary that could not be moved, so he replaced it with us--his new holy of holies...that we might take his presence to others. Mobile holy of holies--that is what his people are.
Ephesians #4: We have seen who God is, praised him for it, and now we will need to look at what what he has truly done for us.
Ephesians #3: Paul enters into a life of adoration as soon as he has described God. These are the first to guides to godliness in Ephesians; 1) that we would take hold of the knowledge of who God is and what he has done for us; and 2) That we would live lives filled with adoration for the God who has poured more love into us than we can imagine.
Ephesians #2: The single longest sentence in the NT leads us into an understanding that God is three and one--to the glory of His name.
Ephesians #1: This is not just a simple greeting used by the author, it is the beginning and end of the gospel. May a life of grace and peace be yours through this process.
Matthew 14: Asks a great question, "Who do you say Jesus is?" Before we can efficiently ask "How then shall we live?" We need to first understand what being a truster of and having belief in Jesus means to us. Then we shall be able to live out of that in sincerity. So, who do you say Jesus is?
An idea that infects Christianity is the idea that the language that the Bible was written in was a "special" spiritual language. Within the last 50 years, though, archeology has shown that many of the very special words that we thought had spiritual meaning are simple everyday words used on shopping lists and such. What if we are to live into that ethic instead of the extra special once in a lifetime be good or else ethic that was so often read into the Bible.
We are different from those who do not believe as we do, that much goes without saying. What does need to be said that as people that follow Christ, those differences should not be used as barriers that new comers must climb over in order to join us. Instead these differences should be held loosely--more of an item for a teachable moment than as an adherence first item.
How do we get from "No one has seen God at any time" to we knew Jesus, we walked with him and touched him. The Incarnation is how. This Jesus, who came to form common ground with us. Shows us how we should then act as his representatives--forming common ground with those who do not know him. Just as he showed us the Father--who we did not know.
First Sunday at Colville. The gospel according to Dave is an effort to put the work God is working out into a short presentation. Do you have the gospel worked into your own words? Until you do, its not likely that you will be able to share it conversationally.
