What can songwriters do with a 12-tone scale? Dua Lipa's current lawsuit questions whether Levitate was plagiarized. We think the two songs have striking musical similarities. But why is that?

Alright ladies and gents! This week we had the amazing opportunity to welcome back Advokit Productions to the show!
This time he walks with his gear, music knowledge, and expertise in providing us a breakdown of one of his own productions (of course) “Good Love” sung by the very talented and ecstatic Sammy Jo!Kit’s insight taught us that all components of the “Sandwich” play a vital role in making music authentic. Little things such as the wrong “kick” sample can influence the overall sound of production. We learned that each of those components be it minor or major, play an equal role in the overall product of a song.
So grab your headphones as usual, like, share, comment and subscribe!

Is it Episode 14 already?! We're having another topical discussion with our host Kemi, Louise, Makesi, and one of our favorite guests, Fernando Chillar.
This week's discussion touches on a hot topic surrounding 2022 Carnival - the pods.
2022 Carnival saw the use of temporary pods at major Carnival events. These pods were meant for vaccinated patrons only and came with a hefty price tag.
How did this arrangement play out? How did the patrons feel? Is this what we can expect for subsequent Carnivals?
We also explored some general issues surrounding many aspects of Carnival, including a brief segue on the status of steel pan and steel pan events.

Fernando Chillar has been a frequent name on this podcast and his information and contributions have been of extremely high value not just to us, but to you the listeners as well. He has pointed out in this episode two critical points that often artistes, producers, beat makers, arrangers and many more bypass or forget about: Songwriting and Sound, how the rights differ, and why it is important to know which rights you should aim to retain within the creative process.
The riff and melody all play a significant role in the sound of the finished product, while the lyrics are just one element of the entire entity.
While we know chords and progressions cannot be copyrighted, stay tuned, as more of these episodes are coming as we talk other cases of copyright and whether these cases are infringement and to what degree.

The legendarious (our own word) Kit Israel of Advokit Productions......YES that Kit, the writer if some of Trinidad and Tobago's biggest hits included "Kan Kan Riddim" (which features artistes such as Olatunji, Benjai & H2O Phlo, Flipo, King Bubba, Sekon Sta, Darnella), "Folklore Riddim" (which features artistes such as Kes, Sekon Sta, Nadia Batson, Turner). Let us just say, we are absolutely honoured that Kit would join us this season (more to come) for a follow up on his successes. As we can see, he is the creative genius behind many of these hit to which have had a major international impact. His music has crossed boundaries that this podcast can only begin to fathom.
Kit sits with us to talk about some key points: What is a producer versus a beat-maker, knowing your market and that sometimes calculated risks are worth it in the long run. In addition to these lovely gems, one thing we can advise on from this talk is: (1) put yourself out there, (2) multiple income streams.
Forty minutes is simply not enough to talk about the entire foundation that shapes the music industry. So, stay tuned, as we plans with Advokit are to be announced VERY soon!

We'll be looking at a few examples from the 80s and 90s, as well as hearing unrestrained opinions about today's music from our guests!
According to Uncle Berry, pairing an iconic sample with terrible lyrics is just a way for an artist to promote their song. In other words, there is a right and a wrong way to use a sample. It's all about artistic vision, to be honest. What did you think of this week's episode? What are your favorite samples? Drop your comments below!

The episode we have ALL been waiting for! This week we have a chat with Mr. Ible (Kemi's Dad) and Uncle "Berry" about samples. We call them "walking hard drives of musical knowledge". The reason being is that they were Dj's (Disc Jockeys) throughout the early 70's, dealing with Vinyls, storing your library of knowledge in your mind, and the use of a Korg Sampler. In order to understand where songs like Latto's Big Energy, Mariah's Fantasy, and even down to other well known artists such as Chris Brown, it is critical to understand how impactful the 70's era and electronic music was on the industry.
The discussion also extended outward to the bounds of creativity, and using samples strictly for creative purposes and what cost it may have to the owners.
What other popular songs do you think were sampled? What song have you heard recently triggered a familiar musical memory? Drop a comment and stay TUNED for Part 2, as we drop some other bombshells about Sampling!

By now, we know that every February around this time, we celebrate the birthday of our founder and host. This time around, we are celebrating two weeks of birthday energy with her! We surprised her with sweet sounds of the LEGENDARY Shannon Francois. It was a lovely wait to begin the pre-birthday pump. Thank you to our resident writer and co host for stringing all of this together in a matter of days, reaching out to some of Kemi's closest friends, to perform just a few of her favourites.
As its the week before her birthday, we decided to split the surprises...so stay tuned for next week's stellar performances as well as surprises for our host! Kemi has made one singular wish this year, and that is she wishes that we all do our part and support the rising acts.

Vocal care is often something that goes missed by up and rising practitioners in the industry. In one of our previous episodes, we did a brief overview as to things that may cause vocal change and damage, as well as pointed to some of the most prominent vocals and their individual evolutions over time. In order to understand in more detail what causes the voice the age or change, we invited triple threat, Ms. Cherysh La Touche, performer/ actress, singer, dancer, a graduate of the University of the West Indies as well as current member of the Tobago Performing Arts Company, to enlighten us further and to provide some tips surrounding performance.

In this episode we analyse and discuss all of the possible scenarios to which an up and rising artist can make in the business. The music industry can be extremely difficult to navigate if inexperienced, as well as finding the fans who will support you.

Today's discussion is about masters ownership. What does that even mean? The term "master" is a shortened way of referring to a track's master (or original) recording. In the music industry, masters ownership refers to the person or entity with exclusive rights to monetize a song. By monetize, we mean the ability to release it at all - on streaming platforms, the radio, or movie soundtracks.
Music is probably the most consumed media in the world. Even though songwriters can claim certain creative rights, profits go to those who own the rights to a song. Imagine this: a track costs $0.99 and attracts millions of purchases. The company or individual with its ownership rights is in to collect a fat cheque afterwards, yes?
What does masters ownership mean for today's artists? We'll be discussing some famous powerhouses who found themselves without full rights to their music and eventually gained these rights. We'll also discuss the value of these rights, both artistically and financially.

What value do you place on gigging musicians? This week, host Kemi sat down with Jehiah Hope, a usual face and voice on this podcast to talk about a prominent issue in the local scene: the value of musical performances, and whether or not, musicians also value themselves and their skills. Let's just say, these two held nothing back, and honesty was on the discussion table. At the forefront of the discussion, it is clear that within our industry, there's possibly no metric or standard for what the going rate for performances are.

It's Episode 17, folks! This week we're talking to Jehiah Hope - a dear friend of this podcast! He's a composer, flautist, educator, producer and sound engineer. He's been composing for well over a decade and credits his ABRSM Grade 5 theory exam prep for launching his composition journey.
In this episode, we'll talk about his composition career, the ins and outs of mixing and mastering, and his journey in producing and releasing the EP. Omo is a Yoruba word meaning 'child'. The album features well-known samples from childhood movies and songs, including the 1971 film Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. What better way to end the month than with a follow-up with the HOLA team? This week we chatted with the executive team Paul, Michael, and this week, including a Mr. Anthony Duncan.
Let us just say, we are absolutely delighted that the team has made exceptional progress, hitting the international stage at the Dubai Expo. The HOLA concert will be broadcasted virtually over the course of the next few months. Cost of tickets are still an affordable $12.25USD. Door prizes also will be given away as well:

Yes, we're doing an album review! Or rather, TWO album reviews! This week, our host Kemi and local musician Jehiah Hope went in on these two albums. As you may know, Donda and Certified Lover Boy dropped within days of each other - August 29th and September 3rd respectively - and both were equally hyped up and anticipated by eager fans and music critics.
In this discussion, we're looking at each album's sound as a whole, which numbers we liked best, the tracks we're not so sure about, and the marketing strategies behind both albums. Tell us - are you feeling #Donda's experimental gospel rap vibe, or are you team #CLB? Let us know in the comments!
Jehiah Hope is no stranger to our podcast. We've had him in Season 1 and Season 2, so obviously, we needed to have him back again! Jehiah is a local flutist, producer, and educator.

This week we decided to that an honourable artist reaction was due. One of the best in our books (who by the way is a part of our vocal trinity), is none other than Shelèa (Mrs. Shelèa Frazier - McDonald). To us she is a vocal phenomenon who is powerhouse full of control, execution and technique. She is also a musician, specifically a pianist.
However the conversation in today's episode is connecting with YOU artist. So here's what to do:

This week, our host, Kemi, and resident writer Louise came together to discuss the idea of a 'Vocal Trinity.' Most say that the ultimate Vocal Trinity is made up of Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Celine Dion. Kemi and Louise sat down and discussed why these three iconic singers hold this prestigious recognition, as well as their vocal influences. We looked at the vocal range of these three legends and asked ourselves if vocal range alone determines a singer's abilities. (This is not the case, obviously!)
We also thought about all of our former guests from Seasons 1 & 2. Who would be the 'Vocal Trinity' of the eclectic range of artists that have blessed our podcast? And what about today's cohort of popular powerhouse vocalists - who is today's 'Vocal Trinity'?

Twenty years ago, on the very 9/11 that forever changed the world, the movie and the soundtrack "Glitter" by Mariah Carey were released at the same time. No-one could have anticipated the unfortunate events that occurred that day. "Glitter", a forgotten gem, remained unspoken of by the legend herself until 2018, when her fans had embarked on an entire movement to get #JusticeforGlitter. So said so done, the album went to number one on iTunes and Spotify.
Our founder, Kemi, has been following Mariah ever since she was little girl, and the "Glitter album has been played a vital role in who she is as a musician.
"In 2003, we moved to Azerbaijan, where I got my first glimpse of an international school. It was this trip to Azerbaijan where I learned two songs on piano (just the melody to be exact) and those songs were “Lead the Way” and “Never Too Far”. Though I was playing Rock n Roll (ACDC and Metallica) I’ve always thanked Mariah and the supposed album flop for being the reason I learned to sing and wanted to learn more vivid compositions on guitar."
Her story on this episode is an interesting one as she braves unlocking her history with this album and what it means for her.
Buy Glitter on iTunes
Listen to the individual track listings here:
Lead the Way
Reflections
Loverboy
Note - The Loverboy that was released on the official Glitter album was not the original version. There are speculations "sampling" to which only the fans can theorise the circumstances, since Ms. Carey herself doesn't really speak on the issue. So here is the original version: Loverboy (Original - Firecracker Version)

Yung Indie Rock has been rapping since he left high school. He's inspired by Drake and Kendrick Lamar, but his sound is unique and fresh. Despite his talent, he’s very humble and doesn't take himself very seriously. When he isn't in the studio, he quietly supports humane causes, including the #BlackLivesMatter movement and other anti-racist movements.
Relax and unwind as we have a quick chat with this young, promising artist.

"What is one mistake that artists make when going into a recording studio?"
"Not paying."
We had a great conversation this week with Zane Lochan and Makesi Jawara Joseph - the driving force behind M To The Power of Four Studios. With Makesi's gentleness and Zane's refusal to speak nothing but the cold, hard facts, these two gave an honest and insightful look into music production in Trinidad & Tobago.

"Sometimes, people don’t even have that creative outlet. It’s a very lucky thing to be an artist." - Noah Light
This week's guest is Noah Light, a talented soul with mellow vocals that sound like a cool Sunday evening. She has spent her whole life immersed in music and inherited much of her parents' musical talents. Noah's background exposed her to an eclectic mix of music that spans both American and Trinidadian genres, and she attributes this to her upbringing between the US and Trinidad. Tune in for another great interview with another promising artist!

This week's episode is exciting.....both as the title says and with the content that comes with it.
While we celebrate our founders birthday today, we wanted to explore what were the possible options for finding balance between undiscovered artists and popular soca artists on the local radio and online streaming platforms.
This episode in particular was an unbelievably eye opening experience as to what options are possible for the future during this COVID 19 pandemic.

On this week's episode, we look at the fact that we are approaching that one year mark of the first reported case of the virus in Trinidad and Tobago. We spent time looking at the possible ways songwriters have adjusted their lyrics to suit the times, how the radio play has shifted (but in which direction) and a possible future if and when parties become a thing.

This episode we feature our very own Ms. Louise Clarke to have a conversation on the current grant situation that is occurring in Trinidad and Tobago. The Artiste Grant is part of our National Reserve Fund that is meant to stimulate and simply 'get artistes by' until something can be worked out.
The best advice we recommend to artists in need is to stay abreast of information through the Ministry's pages:

We had a very hearty follow-up conversation with Greg B! It was an absolute delight having him share his experiences. This podcast also presents a song that was played before by the one and only Kemi Ible. It was played a few podcasts back. Greg had the opportunity to perform it live at 'Drop the Mic'.

Adam Corneal is a Berkelee graduate who has had the opportunity to have worked with Adam Salem Ilese, MKX, Jesus Molina, Sophie Hiller, Livingston Taylor, Bernard Dinata, and Shalya fearing. The conversation took us through his perspective of being part of that international diaspora of musicians, vocalists and songwriters.
Let us just say that the conversation is interesting.....so without further chatter.....

World famous, Boyz II Men single "End of the Road" was the beginning of Gregory Burris' 24 yearlong relationship with singing. It wasn't long before his talents truly blossomed, thus allowing Greg to pursue the art form professionally. In 2018, he released his first R&B single "Attitude" which has been streamed both locally and internationally; reaching as far as the U.S.A. and England.
Desperate times calls forth desperate measures as well as desperate answers:
Should the Artist grant be extended beyond 2020?

Sanch Electronix - a household name, a name that goes down in history as one of the major pioneers for recording high quality pan audio. This week's discussion for us as young hosts, allowed us to get in touch with our history, our roots. We sat down with Simeon Sandiford, a legend and pioneer for high quality pan recording to discuss what we can do to 'get out there'. We won't ramble much more here, the best we can do to give this discussion justice is to let you the listeners become engrossed in the discussion.

This week's guest speaker also happens to be this week's artist per se. He also happens to be our cousin. He recently got into producing and he was given the opportunity to work with top acts like Rebel Sixx and Trapsoundkyler. We felt it important that we engage with him and find out his perspective as a young producer in order to understand the shift in industry sound.
Are you as the listener seeing a drastic shift? Or has music composition and arranging regulated itself most recently?

We chose this week's artist out of sheer love for his content and creativity. He's such a dynamic vocalist with the falsetto of an angel. He guides us right into the crossroad discussion of local music: What can we do to encourage artistes to be more involved locally? Will monetary incentives work? What other ways can we encourage artists to reconnect with 'local''?

This week's artist really allowed the gears in our brains to move in order to have a very deep-seated discussion: Do you HAVE to play/ sing soca or even calypso in order to be considered 'local'? It was a discussion that didn't necessarily leave us stumped, but it left us wondering what is the industry standard for 'local'?
We like Zachary's style, his blended flavors of pop and calypso. He has a very unique imprint that makes him- unique.
To our audience:
What makes local music local? Do you think that airplay on local radio is balanced?

In this weeks episode a good friend of ours Adriel Bailey King suggested this young astronomical guitarist called Zayn Mohammed. Zayn, a Berkelee music graduate we felt was the ideal way to launch our local artist segment. His style, artistic expression, musical vocabulary encapsulated one of the best pivot points to focus on making local more popular, locally.
The discussion was heavy to say the least. It shed light on topics of business that we hope would push our local market to be even more balanced than before.

For this podcast we simply decided to allow his music to speak for itself. There were volumes more that we wanted to speak on however trust us, if you have been feeling the vibes so far up to this point, we believe ALL of these artistes music speaks for themselves.
Eshon Burgandy....What can really say? We were absolutely mindblown by the quality of music, arrangements, lyricism and very happy to see that he has a strong and growing subscriber base.

In this episode my friend Jehiah and I discuss the art form of spoken word and how it is affected in Trinidad and Tobago. We analyze the ways and means of helping the artform come to the forefront of the local music industry.
We utilize the style of Odd Thomas in order to gain greater understanding of how to enhance the local circles of spoken word. Jehiah shares some insight into the roots of spoken word and its development in the Caribbean.

In today's episode we look at the old school rapper Ohmega Watts. We determine his style to be very Tupac and Biggie in the instrumentation department. We also discuss whether artistes should "self promote" as well as whether finding out if there are NOTICEABLE differences between big named studios and home owned/ friend owned/ private studios.
His albums are available on spotify, soundcloud and many other places.
