What if you could hang out with seriously talented leaders, ask them about their successes and failures, their worldviews and habits; then take an insight or two to inspire your own growth? That’s what we do each week on the Experience Leadership podcast. Hosted by Stephen Crawford –– coach, speaker, and CEO of a Minneapolis-based leadership coaching firm –– every episode is an in-depth look at how to build, grow, or restructure your business to lead you out of chaos and into clarity. The goal is to hold you accountable as you level up your leadership and build a thriving business.
Too Stupid to Fail was released last Monday. After all of the years of hard work, it is finally out and available to the world! Not only that, but we are also so excited to announce that we have been the number one bestseller in four different hot new release categories ever since the launch.
Today, I want to take some time to reflect on many of the concepts taught in the book. I’m going to dive a bit deeper into some of the terms and ideas presented within Too Stupid to Fail, including the title itself. I hope you enjoy this solo episode and that it gives you a fresh mindset to take with you as you begin reading and applying the book.

Passion is a great thing. It's what makes the world go around. But when does passion become too much such that it tends to limit and restrict your growth?
This week, we learn about the concept of blinded passion as we bring in Deborah Anthony on the show today. She talks more about it as well as other great takeaways from her book, Beyond The Limits: A Journey To True Passion. Deborah is also leading our group coaching program at Experience Leadership.
A little backstory here – when Deborah got fired from a previous job, she decided to write a book because she didn’t want such a painful experience to go to waste. Her book is a great reminder that we all have hardships that we need to go through in life. And the biggest lesson she wants everyone to walk away from is the power of taking personal ownership.

Today we have a special guest joining us. Dr. Kaliym Isalm is an author and the founder of The TrainingPro Academy. He also runs a boutique educational consulting firm and works as an Assistant Professor of Practice at Southern Illinois University. Kaliym has written four books and, in this episode, we are talking about his most recent, The 12 Inch Rule of Leadership.
When Kaliym joined his fraternity, he had to memorize a 12 inch rule. What he came to find over the years is that those who could recite those 12 rules on command (even long after they first joined the fraternity) had a much steeper career trajectory than those who forgot the rules. This launched Kaliym into an in-depth research project which turned into a book.
Throughout our conversation, we talk more about this process of bringing The 12-Inch Rule of Leadership to fruition. We also get into Kaliym’s educational and career background and discuss some of his best leadership principles. Tune in to learn from the many varied experiences of Kaliym Isalm.

Today we are excited to have Frank Cupersmith with us. Frank is the CEO and former owner of RowCal, an association management company.
The really interesting thing about Frank is that he decided exactly how he wanted to exit his business. This is something all of us could learn from. Every entrepreneur is going to leave their business somehow. You may sell it, it may fail, or you may even die as the owner. Regardless, you’re going to leave somehow; you might as well do it by design.
This is exactly what Frank did. He was able to sell his company and now has more freedom in his life. We are thrilled to have him on the show to talk about this process and what it did for both his company and himself internally.
If you’re looking to learn from a strong exit strategy or simply want to make a difference the way that Frank has made a difference, tune in.

In this summer entrepreneur series, we have been talking with business owners all over the spectrum. Some run eight-figure businesses and some run smaller ones. Today, though, we wanted to introduce an entrepreneur who is within the genesis of his business.
A lot of early entrepreneurs don’t put the right systems in place right away. They don’t lay the necessary foundations for building a strong business. So I thought it would be really helpful for all of you emerging entrepreneurs who have experienced this struggle to hear from someone who is just a few steps ahead of you.
Brad Houston is the owner of Guy’s Sewer and Drain, a drain cleaning business in the Twin Cities/Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Today he is joining us to talk all about his journey to becoming an entrepreneur and the process he has gone through until now to grow his business.

As you likely already know, in an entrepreneurial journey, no one starts out as an entrepreneur. Take my story for example. Straight out of college, I jumped into the nonprofit world. After years of struggles and pay cuts, I became extremely passionate about the budding entrepreneurs I was meeting and the big dreams they carried. It was at this point that I decided to step out on my own to help them and, in that, became an entrepreneur myself.
We’re smack dab in the middle of a series on entrepreneurship where we’ve been highlighting a lot of our clients. However, today we wanted to switch it up a bit by expanding on the story I told above. I’m going to share all about my entrepreneurial journey and that of our team here at Experience Leadership.
There are five lessons that I've picked up over the last decade of being an entrepreneur. During this amazing time of supporting entrepreneurs and leaders within our communities and around the world, I had to learn these five lessons over and over again. They not only apply to me though; they’ve been practiced by many of the leaders that I've had the privilege of working with over the years as well. Tune in to learn these five keys to being a highly successful entrepreneur.

Today’s episode is a special exclusive that we couldn’t wait to share. On July 9, we had our first in-person live event since COVID-19. During this event, a fantastic keynote was given by a very special guest, Greg Coleman.
Greg Coleman is from Jacksonville, Florida and is a graduate of Florida A&M University. He recently retired from a 25-year career as a C-level executive for a Fortune 500 International communications company that offers total communications solutions for public safety markets.
Greg also spent 12 years playing professional football and was even the first African American punter in the NFL. For the past 22 years, he has served as the sideline analyst for the Minnesota Vikings radio network. Finally, Greg is also a professional speaker who inspires leaders and organizations to shift the atmosphere, flip the field, and get a leg up on life.

Businesses exist to help others to bring value to others. But they're so busy doing it, that sometimes they can't sum up why they do what they do, or what difference they are making, or the problems they're truly solving for others. A huge factor in growing your business is being able to truly tell your story, but it’s also a common dilemma many businesses have.
A lot of people have websites and online presences that have been just their branding. Their products have been forced into these boxes. But they haven't really thought through what makes them different.
Today’s leadership spotlight is on Mark Zubert, founder of One Wheel Marketing. With over 20 years of marketing communications experience, Mark has a passion for partnering with small business owners to help them get their message out and highlight how they’re impacting lives.

For the most part, when you're starting out as an entrepreneur, you're often a slave to your job. You’ve got to make sure everything goes right, especially when you have team members.
But we also have to remember that as entrepreneurs, we're not just workers. We're not just business leaders. We're human beings first. Therefore, we need to be able to find that balance and make a conscious decision to create some place for self and family.
Today, as we're celebrating the journey of the entrepreneur and the business leader, we're sharing the leadership of Lindsey Manhart from the Manhart Team at American Family Insurance.
Lindsey is intentional about building people up within her team and deploying them to their strongest area of genius, and taking the time to create the processes and the systems in place to support them. As a leader, Lindsey builds her business based on the foundation of trust.

After a very tough year for a lot of businesses, and a very winning year for other businesses, we want to celebrate entrepreneurs and the champions that make it happen. Today, we're continuing our journey in discovering and celebrating the role of the entrepreneur as we take the time to explore the journey of Dr. William Miller, the owner, founder and CEO of HighPower Data.
From being in the seminary and becoming a pastor, and then shifting into being an entrepreneur, William recognizes that running a business and serving people depend on a higher power. We’re not in this alone and that we have an additional source of power to make things happen for people.
HighPower Data Solutions is a Minneapolis FileMaker software developer that serves clients locally, as well as around the world. They provide services for people in England, China, Tanzania, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Denmark, Hong Kong, Canada and the U.S. William has been creating custom data solutions for more than 20 years, using the awesome capabilities of FileMaker Pro.

This summer, we’re focusing on entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship. We want to celebrate amazing entrepreneurs who are out there crushing it in their fields. To do so, we’re going to be interviewing a lot of business leaders.
It can be really easy to view these kinds of leaders as superhumans. They do so much and they do it excellently. Because of this, we wanted to take some time to not only celebrate the victories of some of these “superhumans,” but to also talk about some of their challenges. Everyone encounters roadblocks along the way; it’s a part of our shared humanity.
To kick us off, I’m talking with Reuben Saltzman. Reuben is the CEO and primary callgiver at Structure Tech Home Inspections. Though they are located in Minnesota, their impact is felt nationwide. Reuben and his team have done some incredible things in the industry they’re in so tune in to hear from him today.

Today we are concluding our series with Tim Wells. Over the past few episodes, he has enlightened us with his perspective. Not only has he brought his expertise based on his integrity model and his role as a sales leader but he has also helped us understand how all of that integrates into culture. Last week, we ended by talking about the things you need to do to prepare your business for investment, to exit, or to manage it with a high level of equity.
Today, we are continuing that conversation with the help of a very special second guest. Reed Robinson founded Groove Capital with the focus of finding great people to invest in great companies. Prior to Groove, Reed was involved with the startup community Beta MN. He is very passionate about seeing entrepreneurs from Minnesota in particular be successful.
In this episode, Reed, Tim, and I are talking about entrepreneurship and what it takes to get support from an investor. Reed emphasizes the importance of grit and never giving up and how to balance that with all of those little business details. Tune in to hear our incredibly rich conversation.

We all need coaches. No matter how high up on the totem pole we are or how much experience we have, we’ve never “made it.” There is always more knowledge to learn, skills to develop, and practices to apply in our businesses.
Last week, we had the opportunity to talk with Tim Wells about all of this. He is an experienced executive in the area of the sales and technology of startups. If you missed that conversation, go back now and listen to it. Tim brought a rich depth of knowledge to our show based on his vast experience.
Today, we are finishing up our discussion. We’re talking about the difference between coaching and consulting and diving even deeper into Tim’s process for working with clients to help them become the best they can be. Tune in to learn even more from Tim’s incredible leadership insights.

Today, I’m not sharing a traditional interview as I usually do on the show. Instead, I’m inviting you to jump into a conference in which I recently got to participate. The conference was put on by The Inspired Leadership Academy and it was a great time to educate learners along with my fellow speakers.
In the talk I’m sharing with you today, I teach the three beliefs you need to shift within yourself. Most of us spend our lives looking at ourselves. It’s our human nature to be selfish. However, the problem with this is that we’re looking at a distorted reflection of ourselves or at just a snapshot of our lives. To find what matters in life, we need to change the way we think and view the world.
Tune in to learn how to do this. Throughout the talk, I’ll help get you on the path towards achieving the purposes for which you were designed and the things to which you were called.

What if I were to tell you, “You should be more wrong”? You’d likely be a bit surprised. Throughout our entire lives, we are told--whether implicitly or explicitly--that we should aim to be right. When we get something wrong or have to correct ourselves, we inherently feel embarrassed and like we need to improve in some way.
Colin Hunter is on a mission to reverse this mindset. He just came out with his new book titled Be More Wrong in which he explains why he preaches this message of being more wrong and learning fast from it.
Colin also facilitates mentors, coaches, individuals, and teams in the areas of leadership presence, personal brand change, leadership and innovation, strategic dialogue, creating board-level influence, and earning a seat at the executive table. As a result of his work, his clients have shown award-winning differences in the ways they lead.
Today we are having a conversation on Colin’s book and his message of “be more wrong.” Tune in to learn how to help your screw-ups add to your success as a leader.

Life is made up of time, time is measured in moments, and moments are defined by decisions.
Therefore, if you want to know the quality of a person’s life, look at what they did with their time.
Today we are sharing a talk I gave for Accelerated Global Connections on this very topic. My talk was titled “The Power of Now.” In it, I dive deep into the idea that most people spend their life not looking at what’s going on right now. They don’t move toward their preferred future because they’re spending all their time in the past.
Tune in to hear the whole talk. You’ll learn how to make the most of every one of your moments, make your visions a reality, and reach your preferred future.

One of my favorite quotes by Les Brown says, “Don't worry if you fall flat on your back. If you can look up, you can get up.” Amy Langer and the rest of her team over at Salo, LLC exemplify this so well.
If you tuned into last week’s episode, you heard some of Amy’s story. She founded her staffing services company shortly before the recession of 2008. When that financial crisis hit, it revealed some major weaknesses in her organization’s structure.
However, Amy and her team were too stubborn to give up their dream. In fact, they did the exact opposite. They hired a coach, created a strategic plan, and just kept pushing.
Today, Salo is an 85 million dollar company. Tune in to hear the rest of their journey towards that incredible success.

When you think of a 100 million dollar company, you probably think of a CEO who was born for the role. You most likely assume she was cut straight from the cloth of parents who mentored her and let her sit on their laps in their big corner offices. Most people believe that is what it takes for someone to eventually own such a successful business themselves.
However, that is not Amy Langer’s story. She is the co-founder and owner of Salo, LLC, an 85 million dollar recruiting and staffing services company. Amy has driven the company's growth through brand affinity and by leading innovative strategic initiatives. All of that and she was raised on a farm.
In this episode, Amy and I talk all about her company’s success. We discuss their meteoric rise at the beginning, the challenges they encountered in the middle, and how they recovered and scaled their business to nearly nine figures. If you want to learn how to pivot and navigate any kind of tricky terrain in your business, tune in to my interview with Amy.

We are all interconnected in this world. As leaders, we can’t afford to have tunnel vision. We must look out not only for the interests of those within our own communities. Instead, we must be intentional about preserving everyone to whom we are connected in any way. This is especially important as we approach one whole year of dealing with COVID-19.
I’m so excited to bring back a special guest to talk more about this today. Dave Muhovich joined us last to provide his insight as a healthcare professional into COVID-19. Dave is an Associate Professor of Nursing at Bethel University and has not only knowledge of but direct experience working in the midst of deadly diseases. Tune in to hear his perspective on this pandemic and how it’s affecting the landscape of our country.

It’s been one year since COVID-19 first affected our lives, yet we’re still grappling with it. No one expected it to last this long. Now, all of us just want to wrap up the conversation around this virus.
As that is going on, it’s important for all of us business leaders to understand how the situation applies to us, as well. How are we supposed to move forward in our organizations and companies when we take into account all the ways the world has changed over the past year? In this episode, we’re diving deep into this topic to help you understand the answer to that question.
To help me out, I brought on a healthcare professional. Dave Muhovich is an Associate Professor of Nursing at Bethel University who has spent a great deal of time wrestling with this issue of the pandemic and how it has impacted businesses. David lived and worked through the HIV epidemic and spent time in Africa during the Ebola crisis, so he brings a solid background of wealth and insight to all the challenges that we're facing with COVID-19. Tune in to hear our conversation on the actual information about this pandemic.

We all have one thing that dominates our thinking. It is our aspiration and the image that drives us. That image gives clarity to where we are going and what we decide to do with our lives. It is the thing that ignites us and sparks us to that next level of making a difference.
Rather than getting obsessed with the journey of finding your purpose, take the time to discover that dominant image. Then take the necessary steps to pursue that. This is where passion really lies.
This week, I invited an expert on these ideas to talk more about them: Phil Rose from Ignium Consulting. He started out as an engineer for Rolls Royce, but in 2005 launched his own strategy consulting business. Phil is now an ICF Certified Professional who is passionate about inspiring people to find their purpose to step up, scale-up, and change.
Not only is Phil an amazing coach, but he also hosts his own podcast and even holds a Guinness world record. Tune in to hear our incredible conversation on purpose and passion.

A lot of people get disgusted with the word “management” and they would often argue one should always be a leader, not a manager. They always want to make this distinction between management and leadership – as if one were bad and the other was good.
And so, one of the largest mistakes within an organization is that people don't have someone who will manage anymore because they only want leaders. The fact is, we need both these two. We need great managers just as much as we need great leaders.
In today’s episode, Nicky J. Davies joins us, along with our very own Dr. Stephen Crawford – two leaders and visionaries – as they discuss the core of leadership. And part of leadership is to recognize that managers matter just as much as leaders do.
Both Stephen and Nicky have extensive backgrounds in executive coaching and corporate training, each having served in the U.S. and around the world. Today’s discussion is around helping leaders and mid-level managers become the best versions of themselves through inspired leadership.

One of the things this whole pandemic has led us to is this craving for human connection. Just look at how your Facebook friends list has probably grown over the past year or the number of Zoom meetings you’ve attended. Indeed, there is power in human connection.
But how do we truly connect with other people? Do we bring out our authenticity, talk about our strengths, vulnerabilities – warts and all? Or do we carry this facade and hide behind a veneer because we’re too scared of being judged by other people?
In today’s conversation with Jason Todd, he talks about his podcast, Coffee with Humans, which started as a social experiment around authentic human connection.
With everything happening around us today, Jason got this idea that people were descending almost into hopelessness and a lot of fear. The whole point of his podcast is that we have this facade of who we are – of this holistic self, of successes and failures, and of hopes and fears. We always live life with a veneer. But it’s okay to go deep. This is the reason Jason Todd created his podcast: to be able to provide a space for people to do that.

This is the first of a three-part interview with Jennifer Smith, the founder and CEO of Innovative Office Solutions as we grace this series on the Secrets of a Scalable Entrepreneur. Jennifer started her entrepreneurial path when she didn’t have any choice but to run their family business. She essentially redesigned it based on her background and knowledge and grew the company from a million dollars to $12 million in just less than two years before she actually sold it.
Jennifer created Innovative Office Solutions in 2001, at a time of the 9/11 crisis and a triple-hit recession in the U.S. when every industry was suffering. As a leader, carrying such weight was not an easy task. But she still managed to inspire people to love what they do and who they do it with.
If you're a leader looking to scale and you think you've hit your limits, Jennifer is going to speak into our lives and our leadership today!

This is part two of The Power of Persuasion. Last week, we dealt with self-mastery, which means that if you want to influence people, then you have to master yourself, build your own self-esteem, and begin to build yourself into another person.
This week, we're going to tackle the next two principles – People Mastery and Process Mastery. I also would like to briefly cover the concept of embracing failures which is part of the Self-Mastery principle that I missed discussing last week.

Everybody loves to buy, no one likes to be sold. And that’s because humans have this defense mechanism where they don’t want to be influenced or persuaded by other people for fear that they might be led in the wrong direction.
As a leader, part of your challenge is to master persuasion so you can influence your team and sell them on the vision, the dream, and the mission of your organization. Influence is all about changing behavior, and part of that is changing the way you believe about yourself. In other words, self-mastery.
Your results are a reflection of what you believe about yourself. They’re the mirror image of what you truly believe you deserve. And until that shifts, you will consistently live at the level of your belief. Remember, you don't live at the level of your dreams, you live at the level of your belief.
So, how do you build your belief to the next level?
In this episode, we’re giving your great insights into how you can tap into the power of persuasion so you can master this skill.

This is the fifth and final installment of The 5 Most Effective Leadership Practices. Today's final leadership practice is centered around building an infectious environment.
In some ways, it's the job of the leader to create or build that environment that allows, enables, and encourages their team members to bloom. This skill requires breathing encouragement, affirmation, and celebration into people.
As humans, it's ingrained in our nature to crave a positive feedback loop and to seek validation and affirmation. Encouragement propels us forward in any environment. When we're being encouraged, we can deal with much stronger challenges and much more resistance. This is when people really begin to bloom.
And that's the way we want all of our team to feel. So they can take that energy into their meetings, their client interactions, and essentially take that energy into their home. This internal and intentional work indeed makes all the difference.

In this episode, we cover Part 4 of our Leadership Series, where we focus on releasing the power of creativity.
Everyone has their own unique areas of genius. But when you get a mix of those different personalities and communication styles on your team, and you don’t make an effort to understand them, they can really stand in each other's way. They can offend people and step on other people's toes.
Essentially, you need to understand how people work, where they thrive, and what their natural tendencies are so you have a better idea on which areas of genius you should release them to.

In this episode, we cover Part 3 of our Leadership Series, where we focus on creating a culture of innovation.
It’s been a tough year for everyone. And we can all feel sorry for ourselves and make as many excuses as we can. But if we take ownership and leadership and we commit to being flexible within these circumstances, imagine how strong we will be when things are going well.
As a leader, it’s essential you’re able to create a culture of innovation within your organization. We can't control what happens to us, but we can control how we respond. So we need to look at things through a new lens this time and approach those challenges with a growth mindset.

Have you ever thought about turning your business into a game?
Well, everybody has been playing different games. Some play for the status, others play for the social interaction they get. There are also others who get into the game for the minimum work possible while some love playing this game of being seen as the expert in their field.
As a leader, the difference lies in getting everybody to play the same game – where you’re moving in the same direction and looking at a clear vision. That way, you’re able to channel all of their energy to the best of their creativity.
Joining me today is Reuben Saltzman, a second-generation home inspector with a passion for his work. He worked for Structure Tech since it was purchased in 1997 and is now the owner and President of the company. He also shares with us some best practices they’ve implemented within their organization.

Passion is a great thing. It's what makes the world go around. But when does passion become too much that it tends to limit and restrict your growth?
This week, we learn about the concept of blinded passion as we bring in Deborah Anthony on the show today. She talks more about it as well as other great takeaways from her book, Beyond The Limits: A Journey To True Passion. Deborah is also leading our group coaching program at Experience Leadership.
A little backstory here – when Deborah got fired from a previous job, she decided to write a book because she didn’t want such a painful experience to go to waste. Her book is a great reminder that we all have hardships that we need to go through in life. And the biggest lesson she wants everyone to walk away from is the power of taking personal ownership.

Today, we’re joined by LaToya Burrell. She’s a licensed attorney in the state of Minnesota and she’s the academic dean of the graduate school at North Central University.
Although wearing multiple hats as a wife, mother, college dean and professor, attorney, and mentor, LaToya wrote her book, Be Bold: How to Prepare Your Heart and Mind for Racial Reconciliation in just two months.
Living and working close to the crime scene of George Floyd’s death, LaToya knew it was time to put an end to her silence – and use her time, her energy, her resources, and her platform to be bold and become that bridge to racial reconciliation.

Today, we're going to look into another topic that's been really relevant in 2020 – racial justice.
It’s not really the overt things that do the most damage, but it’s the implicit bias.
Unfortunately, having this kind of conversation has been made into a political or cultural football, in order to make people feel like they shouldn't have these conversations.
But this is not a political conversation. It’s a human conversation.
So we have to lean into it, even if it makes us a little uncomfortable so we can make our society more equitable and fairer.
And as leaders, it all comes down to this core question:
How do you address and respond when you see any kind of injustice happening in your organization and in your community?

How do you create the best environment within your organization?
Today, we specifically tackle the second most common pain point for leaders and business owners – team and team development. We're joined by Melissa Miller and Deborah Anthony who are part of our amazing team at Experience Leadership as we discuss the intersection of teamwork and leadership.
Most people have a negativity bias encoded into their memory system. For instance, five good things have to happen to replace one negative memory. Now, if you put that into the context of leadership experience, think about how many good leadership moments you have to create to undo a few negative experiences.

Time management issues?
Today, we break down the idea of time management from a leadership perspective.
But first, you need to understand that there’s no such thing as time management. You see, the person who builds a billion-dollar business has the same “24 hours in a day” as the person who never makes over $50,000.
But it's not so much of what you have – it’s about how you use it.
Technically, there’s no such thing as time management. But from a leadership perspective, there are three areas that you need to master in your business or organization.

Experience Leadership was born out of our commitment to helping businesses that want to make a difference in the world.
Seeing the heart and the hunger of for-profit companies to make a difference but not knowing how to do it, we decided to look for businesses that wanted to do something bigger than just making money.
And over the years that we’ve conducted training programs for small business groups and entrepreneurs, we thought it’s time to start building some of those conversations out.
That’s why we started this podcast.
And so, we wanted to start this amazing journey with you by asking you this:
What purposeful thing can you create out of your business?
Because at the end of the day, as you really look at the life of your business, it's going to be about doing something – so it might as well be something good!

Knowledge is not power, applied knowledge is.
Many leaders think that knowledge and experience are enough to put them in a position where they're going to be able to just do amazing things without resistance.
But after working with hundreds, if not thousands of leaders over the last two decades, I can tell you this – leadership doesn’t just come because of what you know.
It’s about how you apply what you know.
And there are certain muscles that you need to grow in order to build your leadership ability and capacity.
This podcast is here to provide tips and strategies to help you explore the limits of your potential and express it to business success.
But we're not just here to share information. We're here to bring you an opportunity for transformation. We’ll help you design the filter that takes it from information to application.
