Today, I will let you know what I highlighted and why in part four of this Atomic Habits series.
If you’re not familiar with Atomic Habits, here’s a crash course:
James Clear wrote this book and introduces “The Four Laws of Behavior Change”.
The four laws are:
Those four things to remember in each law are:
These things can help build good habits and break bad habits habits.
Then, Clear describes “Habit Stacking” and “Environment Design”.
The idea is to overcome common hurdles people face when trying to establish new habits and break bad ones.
Plus, he shares advice on how to stay consistent and motivated when the initial enthusiasm wanes… as it almost always does.
There is a long-term impact of adopting atomic habits.
That’s why I’m going to summarize key takeaways from the book Atomic Habits by reading what I’ve highlighted in the book.

I also want to hear about your own habit-building experiences and what is working for you.

This is the first book I’ve read twice.
The first time I listened to it.
This last time, I read it with a highlighter.
Today, I will let you know what I highlighted and why in part one of this series.
I’m doing this selfishly because I think this is a great way for me to retain what I read.
I’ve read so many great non-fiction books, but when I try to remember what I learned, I’m blank.
So here’s hoping reading it, highlighting it, and sharing it will help you and me remember this to use it in our lives.

So many people want to know how to do their own public relations… when they’re ready.
It’s shocking how many excuses I hear from people on why they’re not ready.
Not big enough. Not well known yet. Not making enough money. Don’t have a team. Still have a full-time job.
The beauty is, PR is what makes you all of these things.
Here’s how.
Not big enough? Low on money. Need sales, need leads… need attention. That’s what PR does.
Not well known yet? Low on attention. That’s what PR does.
Not making enough money? Low on sales, need leads… need attention. That’s what PR does.
Don’t have a team? Low on clients. Need leads… need attention. That’s what PR does.
Still have a full-time job? Low on money. Need sales, need leads… need attention. That’s what PR does.

I consider a flywheel a system. It’s an order of doing things that once started, should keep going. One thing leads to the next.
You can have a sales flywheel, a marketing flywheel, an operations flywheel, and more.
I decided to create a content flywheel on paper.
It was always in my head, but making a design in Canva to actually see makes a big difference for me when it comes to execution.
Why content?
When I look at how I get most of my leads and my clients, it’s from my content.
Even if it’s not directly from my content, people look me up and check me out before deciding to contact me.
My content is a big factor in their decision.
So, this is a behind-the-scenes look at my content flywheel.

Before I tell you how one media placement led to 1,600 customers for a business, I want to remind you that public relations is not sales. It’s marketing. The sales come afterward.
I don’t like it when people rely on media placements to get sales. Can it happen and does it happen often? Yes. But it’s not sales. It’s marketing… and sales are a side effect of getting attention in the media.
In SparkToro, Amanda Natividad told a story about her time at NatureBox, a snack food brand. She broke down her earned media goals into two buckets - long-term and short-term. One focus was on building a reputation and the other was to try to sell the product.
I love this story for a few reasons and you can replicate what Amanda did by focusing on what she did that worked well.
First, they were ready for conversions. When you’re ready, do these five things.

This issue has been plaguing the media and public relations industries for years. It’s paying for editorial placements, also known as paying for placement PR.
Any professional will tell you this is wrong and unethical. But the people who want you to hire them will tell you it’s safe and a way to make sure you don’t waste your money. When they say that, they’re just trying to get your money with little regard for their reputation or theirs.
By doing this, a PR agency is guaranteeing results. Right off the bat, that’s a red flag.
First of all, The Federal Trade Commission requires content sponsors to disclose whether they have paid for a third-party review or endorsement. When so-called public relations firms make these specific promises, they may be violating fair-trade practices.
Sometimes, they pitch and only charge you when they land something and call it a day. I’ll get into the problems with this today, but sometimes they also pay people they know who contribute to a place they land the coverage and that’s a whole different, darker story. I’ve done many episodes on this before so those out on the podcast.
The lines get blurred when you hire a publicist and ONLY pay them if and when they land you coverage.
In this podcast episode, I explain why.
When you’re ready, here are three ways I can help you.
Spend less than an hour learning the 5 simple steps to getting featured in the media without spending money on ads. This masterclass is FREE!

This is an episode with show notes from the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast.Back in the day, you know ten years ago, I built some form of media relations into every marketing plan. As digital channels have taken more and more attention, it’s easy to push traditional media coverage aside, but do so at your own risk.
Getting a nice mention in a magazine or newspaper read by your ideal client is an awesome awareness and trust builder, but today it also comes with a high authority website link making it even more potent.
My guest for this week’s episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast is Christina Nicholson. She is a former TV reporter and anchor who is on the other side of the desk these days, helping small businesses tell their stories as the founder of Media Maven. She and I discuss best practices for getting the media’s attention and improving your PR efforts.
Nicholson is an award-winning journalist with more than a decade of experience anchoring, reporting, writing, blogging, video production, editing, excelling in social media, photography, and live TV. She has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company, the Huffington Post, Time, Yahoo!, PR Daily, All Business Experts, on CNN, WTVJ in Miami, WPTV in West Palm Beach, News 12 in New York City, and many other media outlets.

Spin Sucks invented (and copyrighted) the PESO Model. I’ve recently been binging all of Gini Dietrich’s stuff… and this is her jam.
It’s an integrated approach to communications that blends paid, earned, shared, and owned media to establish thought leadership, credibility, trust, and authority that fuel a brand reputation.
P: Paid
E: Earned
S: Shared
O: Owned
Whether you're a marketer, PR professional, or business owner, understanding and implementing this model will improve your marketing strategies.

I love being productive and efficient. Sometimes a NOT to-do list can help you get just as much done if not more.
While traditional to-do lists outline tasks and obligations, a "NOT to do" list allows you to identify and eliminate nonessential or unproductive activities.
By clearly defining what activities should be avoided or minimized, it helps in setting boundaries and staying focused on the most critical tasks.
This approach prevents wasted time and energy on distractions, unimportant commitments, or counterproductive habits.
By consciously avoiding these activities, you can allocate more time and energy towards meaningful, high-priority tasks that contribute to your goals and overall success.
Ultimately, a "NOT to do" list serves as a powerful tool for enhancing efficiency and maximizing productivity.
Listen to what's on mine!

Should you hire a coach or buy an online course? There is a big difference between the two.
Generally speaking, with a coach, you get more individualized help. With a course, it’s a one size fits all model you can go back to over and over again.I mix the two in my Media Mentoring Program.
I’ve done both. Listen to the episode and watch the video from April 18th to go inside my 10 business coaching and mastermind decisions.
I do both. It depends on what my goals are at the time and what the content is. Every coach, mastermind, and course is different. What may be a fit one year won’t be the next year.

You need to be ready when you’re invited on a podcast or an opportunity comes up you weren’t expecting. If not, you will lose your chance, your competitor can snag it and it may change their business.
Let’s make sure that’s you instead of them.
Last week I talked about two ways to know if you’re ready for PR. Hopefully, you realized you are, so now let’s cover what you need to be ready to land coverage when opportunities come knocking.
These first two I will breeze by because I mentioned them last week.
Now, you need to help the journalist do their job by:

I’m shocked at how many people, especially female business owners make excuses for not being ready for PR - to be on a podcast, contribute an article, land a TV interview, etc.
People feel like they’re not ready because of their perception of what they see on the outside.
That perception is exactly why earning media exposure is worth so much - because of the way your audience will perceive you.
People don’t get there because they have lots of money, run a successful business, have a big team, or anything else you may assume.
They got there because they pitched a good idea at the right time. Trust me, that’s better than relationships.
If you answer yes to any of these questions, then you’re ready to earn coverage.
That’s it. That’s all you need to earn exposure.
That attention turns into leads. Those leads turn into sales (if you nurture them correctly). That’s how you grow your business. It’s Business 101. Attention > Leads > Sales.
Getting attention is step one. You can’t have the other two without it.

The Forbes Coaches Council will say congratulations… then ask you to pay them to write for them. It’s the opposite of a job.
I’m all about contributing to outlets when it builds your brand infront of your ideal customer or client, but this is different.
Not only is this advertising, but it’s tricky advertising.
While these pay-to-play appearances could impress people who don’t know any better, you’re better off just working a tad harder to earn a contributing role at a popular outlet. Then when you do, leverage that like I did when I contributed at Inc. Magazine.

Press release distribution services are tools that allow you to send press releases to a large, targeted audience of journalists, social networks, bloggers, influencers, and traditional or digital media outlets, either automatically or manually.
They will guarantee you coverage… and they’re not wrong. You will get coverage. But what they won’t tell you is that NO ONE WILL SEE IT.
This is why.
The press release is copied and pasted. That’s it.
The only way to see it is to have a long, convoluted URL.
You don’t get any SEO love from the backlink.
No one looks at the wires.
You have to pay hundreds of dollars for it.
So what do you do instead?

I hired my first business coach around 2017. It was life-changing and scary AF. Since then, I’ve never been without a business coach or have been in a mastermind.
I’m going to tell you who I’ve hired, why, how much I paid, and what I took away from each business coach and mastermind… so buckle up!
I’m not including online courses in this roundup. Those are one-and-done with lifetime access and are not as much as a time and financial investment.
But if you’re wondering, my favorite online courses include one about SEO by Brandon Gaille who now has RankIQ, and Justin Welsh’s on LinkedIn and content creation.

Imposter syndrome is loosely defined as doubting your abilities and feeling like a fraud. It disproportionately affects high-achieving people, who find it difficult to accept their accomplishments.
One study found that about 70% of all people have felt like an imposter at some point. Imposter syndrome often affects those who are highly capable perfectionists.
What does imposter syndrome look like?
You don’t give yourself credit. You may think it’s only a matter of time until the luck runs out, and you're exposed.
You’re in the forest, so you can’t see the trees. As more wins and accomplishments pile up, you aren’t able to clear the cobwebs and look at your achievements for what they really are.
Ask yourself this:
"If a stranger shared these accomplishments with me, would the logical conclusion be that they are all a stroke of luck and therefore a fraud?” Probably not.
Maybe you have the curse of knowledge blindness.
Maybe you don’t realize we are all constantly learning and can’t possibly know it all all the time.
Maybe you need to take a beat to ponder your accomplishments.
Maybe you need to manifest being a big deal in real life… kinda.
Get your wants and goals in order
Your thoughts will influence your words, which determines your actions.
Thoughts > Words > Actions
Some call it manifesting. I call it getting off your ass and making sh*t happen.

You can’t just hire someone to handle your public relations and call it a day. You still need to be involved to make it successful.
I’m going to tell you how people sabotage their own PR, so if you’re doing these things, you stop… or you know better when you’re ready to implement a PR strategy.
1. You don’t get back to us when we need you to.
The media works on deadlines, so we need to hear from you ASAP. Many times, they take what’s first and won’t wait for what’s best. Also, don’t no-show an interview… because you won’t have another one.
2. You don’t keep us in the loop.
You know your industry better than we do, so fill us in when big things happen in your niche or at your company so we can spill our news story wheels to see how we can weave you into the narrative and get it some coverage. It could be very helpful to us if you keep an eye out for story ideas!
3. You have unrealistic expectations.
There needs to be more education in this industry because it’s wild how many people think a.) it’s easy to get wherever you want when you want, b.) how deserving they are to get wherever they want when they want.
4. You don’t speak in soundbites or good quotes.
A good soundbite is an animated 15-20 seconds of you saying something of value that adds to whatever is being discussed. Think of it as a passionate conversation, not an infomercial. Just because you’re high up on the totem pole at a company, doesn’t mean you’re good at this. Comfort is key.
5. You don’t understand the news.
It’s not the media’s job to give you a free commercial or promotion. There is a big difference between what is paid and what is earned. Earned media is always going to answer the questions reporters are asked in their morning meeting about why a story is being covered now infront of their audience.

Influencer marketing is HUGE today. Yes, it is misunderstood and so many people think they know how it works, but few actually do.
To dive deeper into how it works and how people make living as Instagram influencers, I'm resharing one of my most popular episodes with Christina Galbato who pulls back the curtain and shares her experience as an influencer and a coach to future influencers.
Christina is a social media influencer, online educator, and digital marketing expert.

Warren Buffett said it takes 20 years to build a reputation. That means PR is a long-term game - not a sprint, but a marathon.
This is why most PR software requires an annual subscription and why most PR agencies require an annual contract.
Trust me, this isn’t to trap you and take your money. It’s just how the industry works.
I’m going to tell you why it works like this and how you can use it to your benefit from my perspective as the owner of a PR agency and someone who helps people do this on their own through my online course and mentoring program.
Your PR firm plants seeds that need time to grow.
It takes time to learn your company and plan an effective strategy.
Quick hits don’t have staying power.
The biggest media outlets often require the most time and effort.
The investment isn’t a guaranteed ROI.
If you hire anyone to handle PR for you, please ask these questions:

One of my Media Mentoring Program clients wanted to know more about how I repurpose my content, so here we go!
Last year, I approached content with a podcast first in mind. This year, I’m going YouTube first.
Audio is pulled from the YouTube video for my podcast on Become a Media Maven.
I pull a few one-minute snippets from the YouTube video to post short videos.
My assistant pulls the show notes and creates a blog post on MediaMavenAndMore.com.
My assistant creates a pin that leads to those show notes on my Pinterest.
Create multiple eye-catching text copy with the help of Justin Welsh’s Content Operating System.
Add images to the multiple text posts. Then, you can post it on Instagram too.
Add videos to multiple text posts. Then, you can post it on Instagram AND TikTok. You can use stock video or take a video of yourself using a SwitchPod.
Create a carousel of images for a “5 tips” or “7 ways to” post to scroll through.
Click here to try Canva Pro for free.
So now we have created a:
YouTube video
Podcast
Blog Post
Pin that leads to the blog post
Multiple text posts
Multiple image posts
Multiple video posts
Carousel posts
from just one core content creation session.
I batch the content create sessions, then spend part of a day recreating all the content.
I just use a Google spreadsheet to keep track of it all and use Agorapulse to set it in the queue and forget it.
If there is a way I can further repurpose and I didn’t mention it here, let me know!

Uploaded everything to a Google Drive folder to share with the client AND to work from when posting to social media

It took me about two years to hire my first team member. Then, it took me eight years to hire my first virtual assistant. Eight years! I was afraid AF to delegate things.
I thought it was just me, but this isn’t a rare feeling. Many business owners are afraid to loosen the reins a little bit and let go.
That’s why I invited Kristy Yoder to my podcast. She is the founder and CEO of Smart VAs, a virtual assistant agency. She has a fabulous method on how to decide what you should and should not delegate and why. This exercise is a must for every business owner!
She scaled her agency from one virtual assistant to 70+ talented individuals. She grew her business simply through delegation and now wants to teach others to learn the power of delegation.
Kristy is also the host of The Master Delegator Podcast. She created it for entrepreneurs who want to learn how to become effective in the area of delegation, management, and leadership. She talks about different business growth strategies such as hiring virtual assistants, productivity, online marketing, and many more!
Fun fact: Kristy was born and raised in Manila, Philippines, and moved to the United States in 2019… to my very small hometown of Marion, Ohio!

Eavesdrop on me Going Through a Sales Training with Lisa Dadd
We don’t have to be in a state of discomfort to be successful - especially when it comes to sales.
As a seasoned marketing and sales executive, Lisa Dadd is on a mission to show entrepreneurs that the success they’re seeking isn’t outside of their comfort zone as they’ve been led to believe, but rather INSIDE it.
In this podcast, she covers many ways you can close more sales and actually have fun during sales conversations, including:
● Why you never have to “be a salesperson”, and who you can be instead
● How to identify and utilize your natural approach to sales, as opposed to the “one-size-fits-all” sales methods people are taught.
● Why this approach helps people communicate their value more effectively, and more
authentically.
● Keys to communicating our value in ways people understand
● How to activate your prospect’s deepest desires to create true urgency
● How to leverage objections to connect to what’s truly valuable to your client
With Lisa’s company, Soul Sales™, she shares the tools to remember who we are at our core, and then to be able to communicate our value in ways that others understand.

William Villalobos from TheFutures.io took the stage at FinCon in Orlando in 2022 and talked about two things - the strategy and tactics to batch 30 days of content in one day.
In this episode, I’m going to break down what he said and what I took away from his session on the Solutions Stage.
When it comes to creating content, you need to make decisions like:
Now, you need to define your business focus for the year. It could be you building your brand, getting more traffic, attracting investment, increasing leads, etc.
That’s it for strategy. Now, let’s get into the tactics.
More decision-making needs to happen, like:
William said Whatsapp is growing with micro-communities, but TikTok is the biggest one right now… which is not a surprise, right?
This is where people get stuck. They ask themselves, “what in the world should I talk about?!”
Some places to get ideas include:
William also advised to never focus on all ideas at the same time. Personally, I love this piece of advice because we’ve all heard the same, generic stuff over and over again. It’s time to dig deep and go super specific on one topic. That’s where the value is.
Today, a popular strategy is to find out what is trending on TikTok and cater it to your audience, but do this as an experiment. Do everything as an experiment because you never know what will work and what won’t unless you try.
Some things to try experimenting with include:
A big takeaway for me is to take TikTok videos and put them on YouTube shorts as “how to” videos… and this would work for Instagram reels too. It’s the same content (just be sure to remove any watermarks that may appear).
Make sure you have a CTA to collect leads and a pixel so you can retarget people with ads if you run ads in the future.
To make content creation easier, William suggests:
If anything is time-consuming or you just hate doing it, delegate or outsource!
My big takeaway from this session was this: Repurpose one video into micro pieces of content. It sounds so easy, but I don’t do it and because of this session, I’m going to put it on my calendar to start!

If you’ve ever thought, “Why create my own events when I can just speak on other people's stages?” or want to know about the different types of events that make the most sense for you, or when are you even ready to host your own event, anyway? Then, how do you get people to actually want to attend?!
All those questions and more will be answered in this podcast episode with Sarah Gray.
Sarah is a 7-figure no BS event marketing strategist from Ireland. She launched her second business in 2019, 8 months before the pandemic hit, and surpassed the seven-figure mark in just over 1 year. (Wild, right?!)
She has an unmatched track record of helping her clients achieve multi-seven-figure success, so no matter what's going on in the world, she knows how to lead you to substantial revenue gains by creating your OWN stage.
In this episode, Sarah breaks down why hosting your own events is one of the BEST (and fun) ways to connect with your followers in a tough economy and how hosting events allows you experience total freedom in your business when it comes to lead generation (so you're no longer dependent on someone else's audience).

5 Ways Melissa Kwan Went from $0 to $500,000 in 3 Years
Melissa Kwan is the co-founder and CEO of eWebinar. eWebinar does all of your demos, onboarding, and training webinars for you so you don’t have to.
She built it from nothing to $500,000 in annual recurring revenue in just three years, but she says revenue is not easy. Getting people to take out their credit cards is getting harder and harder, retaining customers with unrealistic expectations is hard, and building a product and keeping the burn low is hard.
In this podcast episode, she is going to break down how she did it…. and will explain why she brought on a co-founder a year after she started the business.
Melissa also shares how she got her first 100 customers, going into detail on these five points:
Wrote down every company in her network that she thought could benefit from her product
Two weeks before launch, she went down the list to tell people about what she was doing to see if they wanted to try it out
She scheduled onboarding calls where David (her CTO) and she would watch people sign up and create their first webinar so they could fix UI/UX issues
She gave anyone who signed up in the first two months a 60-day free trial (mostly because Stripe wasn't integrated yet!)
She started charging when their trial was up - no exceptions.

How To Make Money On Etsy Without Making Anything with Madison McCarty
About a month after Madison McCarty opened an Etsy store, she was making $1,000 with her new side hustle. Some of what she sells, she doesn’t even make herself!
I found Madison on TikTok when a 60-second video breaking down her process went viral. It intrigued me so I asked her to come on the Become a Media Maven podcast to break down her process and get super specific so we can see the same success she does.
These are the eight steps Madison covers… and she doesn’t hold back!
Step 1: Don’t overthink it. Just open an Etsy shop and become a seller.
Step 2: Sign up for an account with Printed Mint and check out their items for sale.
Step 3: Brainstorm what you’d want to buy and do research on Etsy.
Step 4: Design it on Canva.
Step 5: Mock it up with Printed Mint.
Step 6: Investigate competitors
Step 7: Post it on Etsy.
Step 8: Within one week post 20 listings. Then, maintain it.
Step 9: Ask for reviews via email with Etsy marketing and include a business card or gift note with your customer’s order.

To be successful in PR, you need to be prepared and be able to give members of the media whatever they want and need on a silver platter. That’s it!
It drives me nuts when people think a PR team is a sales team. It’s not. You need to be ready to convert those leads PR brings… or else, what’s the point?
I know this sounds silly, but so many people go into a PR strategy like members of the media owe them something, like they deserve media coverage. Trust me, every journalist in the world would not mind if media pitches stopped. They’d be fine. you wouldn’t. So yes, being nice and courteous to members of the media is helpful.
This doesn’t mean post a bunch of randomness on every platform. This means you should ask yourself, “What are members of the media or potential customers going to find when they search for me on social media?”
If all the news stories were only the people behind the business, things would get boring really fast. You need to have those trusted customers, referrals, and people who have actually experienced what you talk about ready to go. If you’re a doctor, have a patient. If you have a product, have a real customer who uses your product on a regular basis. These are the people that add the entertainment factor.
I hate math, but I mean stats and data when I say do the math. All journalists like numbers because numbers make things current and relevant. It screams “NEWS” when people can see there are hard facts that can be quantified in a news story.
If you have all of these things ready to go and you’re willing to share (even overshare), you will be way ahead of many others looking to build their brand in the media.

In the last two weeks, I’ve been asked this question twice. In fact, I’m asked this question by potential clients all the time.
So, what’s the question? “Where are you going to get me and when are you going to get me there?”
It’s a hard one to answer, but it’s one that needs to be attempted because it’s a common concern for anyone who hires PR agencies or publicists.
The answers will vary depending on who you ask - sometimes people are truthful. Many times, people lie.
Kevin Monell and Jason Caruso host the eCommerce Uncensored podcast. They’ve dabbled in a lot of things in the agency world.

Nikki walks us through the five steps of an authentic selling process in a way that builds relationships, creates true connection, and results in more closed deals and long-term clients.
And if you hate sales, this episode will teach you how to like it… and be good at it!
In a nutshell, these are the steps:
This can come through a media appearance or at an event or it can be a referral. It’s all about making a positive first impression.
This is when someone finds out more about who you are what you do so you can see if the person is a potential customer. If you skip this, no one gives you buying signals.
Here you ask what is their problem, their need, and their want. You’re not selling. You’re asking strategic questions to ask permission to move to step four.
Now you layout an offer based on what you find out in the discovery so you don’t miss what was said that turns into gold nuggets.
This is where you issue close language. You get here by following all the steps. No skipping!

The complexity level of what we need to do in marketing is much greater.
It used to be a world of what message are we going to get to them. Now, you need to connect and keep the lines open so you have two-way communication.
For the first time in advertising (and marketing) history, we are on a two-way street with communication.
Scott Thaler is a marketing and advertising executive who has worked with some of the biggest brands in the world.
In this podcast episode, he talks about how paid, earned, and owned media have to work hand in hand because “people are being bombarded and the platforms are being the gatekeeper” making it harder for brands.
When Scott was with Mattress Firm, they used paid, owned, and earned media, but they NEVER ran the same thing in all three.
So, how do you know what’s working and what’s not?
How do you convert?
How do you ensure marketing is working with sales… and vise versa?
We cover it all in this episode!
Scott Voelker is back on the Become a Media Maven podcast to talk about how people can finally take action on a business idea, even if they’re scared.
In his book, The Take Action Effect, he talks about the many businesses he started and how his mindset and hard work played a big part in his success.
Scott talks about the safety nets he hung to fall back on while he carved out time to work on his side hustles.
These five steps will get you started:
Side hustle.
Start small and work your way up.
Use your unique assets.
Having the focus and the direction to hit your goal. Pick something, go, AND COMMIT FOR 8-12 MONTHS!
Don’t build something, then validate it. Instead, validate it, then build it.
Also, invest in a coach or mentor to take action to see results faster.
I participated in not one, but two Instagram giveaways. I did it or two reasons - one, to tell you all about what happened on the Become A Media Maven podcast and two, to experiment.

I also talk about what I did (or didn’t do) to leverage it and what you need to if you're even thinking about participating in a social media giveaway.
Today, I’m talking to the woman who took down the real Dirty John. Dirty John was a wildly popular True Crime podcast turned Bravo TV hit.
In this episode, you’re going to hear how Terra Newell took down the man who stalked and harassed her and her family and how she ended up killing him in self-defense.
Today, about three years later, Terra is talking about the months leading up to the deadly attack, how she fought for her life, and what’s she’s doing today to help other women.
All forms of media are important, but today, there is no better or quicker way to grow your personal brand and see an ROI than being a guest on a podcast.
Angie Trueblood, the host of the Go Pitch Yourself podcast, talks about the biggest mistakes people make when they pitch themselves to be a guest on a podcast, including things like not personalizing the pitch for who they are pitching and paying attention to the first sentences in your pitch because it could make or break your chance.
In the podcast space, we as listeners and potential guests don’t get download numbers, so looking at other things like reviews and social media usage is a good indicator of the influence of the podcast and its host.
We also get into pay to play opportunities and much more.

Things are so fast-paced these days that from the moment our eyes open - the scrolling and “here’s what I have to do” lead to you never fully being present because there’s always a “what’s next?”
From when we wake up, we start the stress and worry about what’s going to happen and what may never happen. The mind is problem solving all the time. It’s not needed.

Jessica Lindgren has been working as an executive assistant for 15 years - supporting C-Suite executives and now working very closely with my mentor, Pat Flynn.
In this episode, Jessica dives deep into what she does, how to land a job as an executive assistant, and what to look for when it’s time to hire one yourself.
So how do you know when you need a high-level powerhouse to be your right or left hand, who is detail-obsessed, acts as a project manager, and is on a whole other caliber of assistant without micromanagement?
Jessica Lindgren gets into that too!

I’m taking over my microphone today for part one of “Ask Me Anything”.
This was just going to be one episode, but because I got so many questions, I turned it into two episodes.
Some of the questions I answer has to do with how where you live can (or cannot) impact your media pitching and coverage; how many media hits do you need to start seeing traction in your business; the best way to drive traffic to your brand; how to use HARO to get coverage (when it’s not regulated); and so much more.

I’m a little obsessed with being productive and efficient.
So is my friend, Stefanie Gass from The Mompreneur Mastermind Show.
She went from working in network marketing to becoming a fulltime mompreneur that helps others in network marketing.
She quickly realized that what she was teaching others, how to brand themselves to build their businesses, was getting old fast. (I mean, how many more online sales tactics can you really handle?!)
In this podcast episode, Stefanie is going to show you how the right strategy and mindset makes all the difference in growing your business as a productive mompreneur.

A business system is a group of rules that tell people how to do things and when to do them.
It’s a roadmap anyone can use to run your business. You can file them in a way everyone can understand with folders for each topic, for example.
According to my podcast guest, there are three must-have systems:
Operational to show how things gel together and how everyone knows what’s going on
Marketing to show how are you are consistently putting yourself out there to attract people
Financial to show the flow of money in and out of your business
In this podcast episode, we touch on so much including generating business, checking email, social media, team building, administration, and more.
Generating Business
When we talk about generating business, Sheri-Anne is focusing on following up on leads specifically.
Potential clients are not going to jump on what you’re selling right away, so it’s in the follow-up.
Sheri-Anne suggests putting the information into a prospecting spreadsheet and never leave them hanging until they become a client.
“I’ll keep going until I get a no,” Sheri-Anne said.
Checking Email
Sheri-Anne’s calendar block tells her what to do and when to do it, like when to check her email. (I do the same.)
Social Media
Posting and being social on social media is very important today.
Sheri-Anne calls her social media strategy her lunchtime leisure activity, then has time blocked out in the week for more social media focus.
Team Building
Onboarding a team member is like employing new technology when it comes to teaching them what to do.
When building a team, you need to ask yourself, where do I need help and what do I need help with?
Map out exactly what that person will do so the responsibility will be taken away from you to free up your time to do other things.
From there, build the job profile and hire for that task that needs to be done. Yes, hire for the task, not the person.
Admin
Having a formal way to invoice your clients on time to avoid a cash flow problem is key. Sheri-Anne says this sounds simple, but so many business owners are NOT doing this.
It’s important to set up an automatic payment system and ask yourself:
Are you paying bills? Are you paying yourself? Are you paying your team?
If not, you need to cut your expenses.

Up until two years ago, I had a money mindset problem. But, I didn’t know I had a problem.
Now, I can spot others with the same problem a mile away.
In this podcast episode, I’m breaking down why I was so afraid to spend money on my business for two years, when and why I started spending money, and the three solutions to having a negative money mindset that is holding you back.
And no, I’m not talking about manifesting money. I honestly don’t really believe in that.
I’m talking about guarantees, outcomes, fear, risks, and investing in yourself… wisely.

If you write good copy, you can sell almost anything.
No one knows that better than Bryan Cohen, a man who has built a business writing the descriptions for the back of books.
With success in self-publishing and ghostwriting, he built an audience of followers who kept saying they needed help with this - book descriptions.
People can write books and novels that are hundreds of pages, but it’s hard to write something that’s 200 words to sum it all up… and that a reader wants!
In this podcast episode, Bryan is going to walk us through his process and how it has transformed his business.

Yes, the owners of PR agencies and publicists are telling you lies. In fact, it's so bad that it's part of the reason I started my own agency.
When I worked at an agency full-time, the owner would over promise deliverables to clients and put it on the employees to make the impossible, possible.
Sometimes, I lose business because I don’t tell these five lies, but I'd rather lose the business than end up with a terrible reputation, like many others in the publicity industry.

People talk a lot about Facebook ads and Instagram ads, but promoted pins on Pinterest don’t get a lot of attention.
That means there is less competition to get your content in front of your audience on Pinterest... if you know how to promote a pin on Pinterest.
Monica Froese is a blogger who viewed this gap as money to make… and that’s exactly what she started doing by promoting pins on Pinterest, then teaching others how to do the same thing.
In this episode, Monica takes us through why we should stop caring about the page view and start caring about the conversions.
The data will tell you everything.
Now, let’s go step by step.
First, you need to install the Pinterest tag on every page of your website in the header script. For Facebook advertisers, this is like your Facebook pixel.
Then, you’re going to go determine your goal to set an objective, choose an audience, and do keyword research because Pinterest is a search engine.
The best part? Monica says advertising on Pinterest is cheaper than on Facebook.

I’m so annoyed with all the scams, stretched truths, and just straight up bullsh*t so many people believe about getting media exposure.
I touched on this during my talk at the Mom 2.0 Summit in Austin, Texas and wanted to bring it to the podcast because there is a big difference between a journalist, a blogger, an influencer, and a publicist.
Today, too many are using these titles interchangeably while behaving unethically and breaking the law.
