On Real Estate 101, Mary Gill gets an update on the protests in North Dakota. If you have not been following the story, here is a quick summary.

A new project known as the Dakota Access Pipeline Project has been approved for contractors to install pipelines into the ground to allow oil to be transferred from state to state. However, residents in the area, who happen to be Native Americans , are against the project because they believe the pipeline will be an environmental threat to their homeland. They fear that if their was an oil spill, it would contaminate their water supply. They are also arguing that land that is being used to fulfill this project is sacred ground. Many of their ancestors were buried in the same exact spot where the construction is scheduled to take place.

Since the approval, protesters have been out on the land known as Standing Rock, fighting to protect it. It has been reported that police officials have been trying to intimidate the protesters by spraying them with tear gas and releasing police dogs. The fight has created so much controversy, that even President Obama had to step in, and temporarily suspend the project.

On the show, Mary Gill talked to one of the protesters, Quincy Shannon. He is an educator from Denver, Colorado who got involved because it was the right thing to do. He wants everyone to know that he will be continuing to help the Indigenous People on Standing Rock, and wants to encourage everyone to get involved. If you can’t make the trip to North Dakota to help protest, he did start a GoFundMe by logging on to www.gofundme.com/standing-in-solidarity-nodapl if you would like to give monetarily. To hear more about what he experienced, listen to his interview below.

There’s an actual Old English word called “trumpery”, which means attractive but of little value or use, showy but worthless. Ironically this term perfectly describes the campaign and propaganda machine around Donald J. Trump(ery). It’s true, he has tapped into a frustration that has been brewing with certain segments of American society since President Barack Obama was first elected. Through speeches that quantify fears and play on the emotions of the ignorant he has been able to forge a remarkable campaign for president despite his separatist doctrine. Trump knows his strengths….a marketing and propaganda master who has taken the pulse of SOME citizens who desperately feel out of touch every since the white privilege structure was attacked through the election of President Barack Obama. Other Trump supporters are simply looking for an extreme reprieve from politics as usual and will support anyone who presents themselves as “anti-establishment”. These highly volatile individuals have been quietly waiting for someone to champion their collective causes and give them covering to express their true social ideology. Trump also has a keen understanding of the weaknesses in America. Bigotry, hate, racism, classism, gender wars, etc.. By being a skilled separatist he can create division among virtually every demographic in America and divide this country in ways that could be irrevocable. In the process creating for himself strong opposers but also strong supporters. Let’s look at the facts; he’s manipulated the masses to believe he represents answers but gives none, that he represents truth but lies frequently, that he represents conservatism but lacks any definite ideological leaning one way or the other. Many Republicans are now trying to distance themselves from his extreme policies; banning Muslims, solving our immigration problem by building a wall, killing innocent people to get to terrorists and the list goes on. Honestly, Republican leadership created the political climate that allowed for a Donald Trump to come in and become the wrecking ball he is now. For over 7 years conservative leadership espoused a declaration of hate against President Barack Obama. Conditioning Republican voters through lies, innuendo and rhetoric that the elected US President was personally against them and would destroy the very foundations of this country. Those falsehoods for political gain have taken its predictable course and caused many to have a visceral hate for this President. Now Trump is the current victor in this political melee simply because he’s willing to present the most hostile and abhorrent message to the conditioned masses. The more hateful he sounds the higher he climbs in Republican poles. Are you supporting Trump?

As you have heard by now, the wife of Hollywood superstar Will Smith, Mrs Jada Pinkett Smith wants African-Americans to boycott the upcoming Oscars. Her social media post has gone viral as she criticizes the Academy for not paying attention to African-American talent in the world of acting. No doubt Jada’s motives are purely personal due to her hubby not receiving a nomination for his leading role in the movie “Concussion”… I didn’t see the movie but in the trailers his African accent was less than believable; but I digress. Regardless of Jada’s motive(s), her words are spot on. African-Americans have been snubbed for years as it relates to the Oscars with the last two years being the most egregious. Even an African-American woman, Cheryl Boone Isaacs the Academy president acknowledged feeling “heartbroken and frustrated” by the nominations this year which did not include any people of color. Chris Rock is this years host and finds himself in a whirlwind of controversy as many leaders and fellow actors are asking him to boycott as well. Here’s the crux of it all; The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) aka the “Oscars” is an organization created to advance the arts and sciences of motion pictures. The Academy’s corporate management and general policies are overseen by a Board of Governors, which includes representatives from each of the craft branches. The Academy is composed of almost 6,000 motion picture professionals. While the great majority of its members are based in the United States, membership is open to qualified filmmakers around the world. These individuals comprise the voting body and selects nominees and winners. THE BREAKDOWN: 94% of the members who make up the Academy are white..77% are male. This membership body lacks both racial diversity and gender equality. A little known fact: The Oscars have been through this before…in the 60s. Not with African-Americans but rather with young people who were unsatisfied with older performers receiving the bulk of nominations and younger less established thespians were left out…sound familiar? During the era, young whites in Hollywood banded together and demanded change, even threatened a boycott. The Academy listened, recruited a record number of younger members to the voting ranks and “wala” more actors from lower age categories were nominated and won. QUESTION: Should we continue advocating for a “place” inside of the Academy or are we better off by taking the advice of Jada and creating our own thing? Bottom line…. In recent news, residents of Peoplestown in the Atlanta area are being pressured by the city to sell their home. Mayor Reed and city officials say that they are looking into building a park and a retention pond in the area in order to control the flooding. Sounds reasonable, but the residents of Peoplestown are saying that they do not have a flooding problem and should not be forced out of their home.

One of the residents who was being pressured to leave was 93-year old Mattie Jackson. The controversy over her being forced to sell her home gained so much attention, that Mayor Reed decided to allow her to stay. But what about the other residents?

Here to talk about the eminent domain situation is Senator Vincent Fort, Activist Columbus Ward, and the residents Tanya Washington, along with Mr. and Mrs. Darden. Today on Too Much Truth, Derrick discussed comments T.I. made in a recent interview about the upcoming Presidential Election.

He said, “Not to be sexist but, I can’t vote for the leader of the free world to be a woman.” He went on to say that women make permanent decisions based off emotions and that is not the right way to handle foreign policy.

His most offensive statement was, “I think you might be able to get the Loch ness Monster elected before [a woman].”

Derrick asked his audience how they felt about T.I.’s statements and you just might be surprised by their responses.
