We survived this season despite many obstacles. Unfortunately Covid prevented roundtrip travel, but we figured a way to interview some fantastic guests (hope you agree) virtually. We ran low on funds but with the help of a wonderful sponsor we were able to put together some amazing episodes, that hopefully did not show the behind the scenes financial and technical high wire act we were carrying out.
So far this season we have covered not only US coffee issues but delved into the plight of some growers and coffee sustainability. We truly traveled around the world interviewing entrepreneurs, coffee experts, NFL Super bowl champions, former Coast guardsman, women and minority run coffee business. A coffee business (Aspire) supporting those with disabilities and world renowned authors. From both coasts, and Middle America to Colombia South America, and that fantastic "land down under" Melbourne Australia. We brought you stories that spanned these United States, learning more about coffee, production, sustainability, roasting, tasting and flavor profiles. We tackled a Colombian Revolution along with the differences of fair and direct trade, and why independent stores are so, so important to this ecosystem. We hope we educated you on how to look for not only the best tasting coffee, but what it takes to bring you this magic elixir! How do we maintain independence and sustainability in the coffee industry? Ok now its your turn!
All that being said we now need your help, and want to hear from you if you are out there listening to our episodes and reading this. Did we keep you entertained, did you learn anything? Are we providing you with the kind of stories, guests and witty banter, that you need in order for us to keep going. How fitting a name is this for a retired military man to come up with for his coffee company ...wake up! This week we talk with Calvin Harris, the Founder & Managing Director of Reveille Trading Company, a black- and veteran-owned direct trade coffee company focusing on empowering small farmers through business. They focus not on transactions but relationships...what a concept in today's world. Although the company is in Atlanta Georgia, we caught up with Calvin in Florida to talk about his transition from the US Coast Guard to coffee.
Serving in the US Coast Guard for five years, planning on Officers Training School and then sidelined with medical issues, what is a retired veteran to do? Ask his father of course. Oh you should be so lucky to get this kind of advice from your patriarch!!
Looking for a new mission in retirement and in the prime of his life, Calvin traveled the world opening his eyes to what abject poverty really meant. This led to the second great piece of advice his wise father gave him...are you sensing a theme here? This one put all the puzzle pieces in place for this amazing young entrepreneur.

This week's guest is the owner of Quimbaya Colombian Coffee. He is however on the show for this episode not promoting his coffee or his business but discussing the issues in his homeland. The reason for this lack of self-promotion will become crystal-clear in this interview. We are taking a break from our usual routine and revisiting Covid coffee Chronicles where we tackle specific subjects, related to the coffee industry. If you’ve been following Colombia this may be a refresher course, if you have no idea what we’re talking about stay tuned for some eye-opening information. The impact on Alex’s business is magnified, and that he has all of the components of his coffee business taking place in Colombia from growing the seed to roasting the beans.
Colombia is the third largest coffee producer of coffee in the world, with over two million Colombians dependent on this source of revenue from coffee production for their income. That is over 25% of the rural population. The combination of civil unrest, a worsening of the Covid pandemic and the culmination of building resentment to lack of representation and pay inequities have forced everything to head. The newest demonstrations there are putting a halt to commerce, on many fronts. This is resulting in a significant early impact on the coffee industry, and specifically on our small businesses focus this week.
Tired of “tax reforms”, lack of government representation and being squeezed on both the wages and price market, people are “not going to take it anymore”. What about the farmers in the rural areas? What is stopping them from harvesting their crop? Can anything be done to protect them? Hey but this is all happening in Colombia why should it affect me here in the USofA? Learn how the anti government protesters are causing the extreme slow down of coffee exportation, and why what happens there today can affect you here tomorrow!
Alex Lozano shares his personal stories from his homeland and the heartbreak over the unrest. He also talks about his beloved country and how the slow down of coffee production is not only affecting not only him, but potentially the lovers of coffee in his new country, the United States of America. Listen to a boots on the ground discussion of all things Colombia from someone who grew up there, smelling the aroma of his grandma's freshly brewed coffee. This week we are in Brooklyn New York where we caught up with Tony Ponte, owner and founder of Graziella Coffee, a small batch roaster, with a strong family history in coffee and proud Italian lineage.
His coffee story begins with his maternal grandparents who immigrated from Italy and his paternal grandparents who owned and operated a coffee shop. The Pesce's grew up in Southern Italy on the family farm before immigrating to Northwest Connecticut. His paternal grandparents opened up a franchise location of a family coffee shop, which had originated in Rhode Island called Bess Eaton Donuts, when they arrived. Wait... so its not Bessie and Donuts? Oh the trouble we can get into.
They definitely passed on their work ethic to Tony. At least initially, that did not include their love for coffee, either as a utility or a social lubricant. Working in the coffee shop, that had since been taken over by his uncles and father, he realized that he didn't really enjoy coffee or donuts. Luckily for us that was early on in his life. So, when did he develop his refined palate for coffee and does he like donuts now? By the way just who doesn’t like donuts? I can hear Homer Simpson crying out …Mmmm….doughnuts… drooling and ….doh. Like his grandparents before him he gradually started to drink coffee as a utility, to get him through the work day. How did that change to a love of coffee? Enter his biggest influence, and the sage advice, from his good friend that changed his career path.
Before jumping into a career, why not take a 30 day motorbike tour of Vietnam with your girlfriend! What could possibly go wrong? Never mind that he couldn't ride a motorbike. What about being held hostage, and riding four to seven hours a day dodging semis, one lane roads and in the pouring rain! This week we are talking to the owners of MochaBox Coffee, in Washington DC. Floyd Sartin & Harlin Thomas ll. From the east-side of Detroit to the nation's capital, how did these two decide to “see it and be it” The owner’s of MochaBox Coffee made their childhood dreams of success into reality. Let’s start with their homage and a coffee brand name entering into their origin story. The Black Bottom area in Detroit, was originally named by early French colonial settlers for the dark, fertile topsoil found in the area. More importantly to our story it later became a thriving entrepreneurial black community, a cultural musical and business hub. This week we continue with our series on minority owned coffee business that may have been marginalized, or overlooked. We delve into some of the history of that marginalization and talk about why there aren’t more Black owned coffee shops. How far should you have to go outside your neighborhood to find them? From high powered law firms and practicing attorneys, to coffee shop owners, how does that happen? Amanda Jane Thomas and Shanita Nicolas met when they were newbie lawyers just out of law school, working at the same firm. Based on their past experiences with coffee and “coffee shops” they found through “therapy sessions” they shared a common passion. The germination of Sip and Sonder is the story of two very determined Black women, with a vision. They were determined to bring the ‘coffee shop experience” to the neighborhood and communities they loved. We also answer definitively what’s the best part of law school and where you should go to study for the Bar exam. Do you think there are major disparities, and injustices with black businesses , and coffee shop owners in particular? And why aren’t there more great coffee stores in black and brown communities? Money skin color and prejudice, how long did it take these two Ivy League educated black lawyers to obtain a loan for their shop? What kind of effect is BLM having on Sip & Sonder now, and what is the one question from patrons that they welcome. Why is a Third Space so important to them? When society overlooks people with disabilities it takes more than just a few well meaning people to step up.Enter Metropolis Coffee, renowned for their award winning java and dedication to sustainability, and fair trade. When approached with the idea of becoming a corporate sponsor for Aspire they jumped on board and Aspire CoffeeWorks was born. Here everyone loves coming to work, no joke. Meet Ben, our next guest who has Fragile X syndrome, a genetic condition that causes a range of developmental problems including learning disabilities and cognitive impairment. He has been a team member at Aspire CoffeeWorks for the last five years, and is one of their biggest salesmen! What happened at an outreach during his presentation at a major law firm will not surprise you, once you listen to his interview!
It takes lots of individuals, businesses and corporate connections to make this all work. Metropolis and Canteen are just two of the major partners. How did that come about and how can you get involved? We will take you through the whole program, selection hiring, training to full fledged “mock ups” of multiple real world opportunities.

A Perfect Blend
We, like many Americans have had to change course, since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. We are now practicing social distancing, and no longer traveling the country in person. We have developed a series of special remote episodes focusing on how the pandemic is affecting small businesses and stores that were not initially on our radar. With this next series of episodes we'll be focusing on the recent impact of increased social injustice, and areas of conscious and implicit discrimination. We will gather different perspectives on these issues and what this new reality looks like. Many still don’t understand the meaning and implications of what is taking place with the social injustice movement and Black Lives Matter. We will be launching some deep dive questions about race, privilege and implicit bias. The conversation needs all of us.
We will focus on minority owned coffee shops/businesses and locations that are promoting social justice dialogue and discussion about prejudicial behavior. Along that vein we also discovered coffee businesses that feature a segment of the population often left out, and that is Americans with disabilities.
Our first interview in this series is with AOSA Coffee in Huntington Beach, CA. Keyana Hill owner of AOSA is black and her parents are from Belize, and her husband is white. They are the perfect couple to kick off this dialogue and exchange of viewpoints. Did being an interracial couple help or hinder their business? What were the community changes Key found, once she moved from her home in Riverside to Huntington Beach?
We took a deep dive into some of the courageous conversations they both have had with their customers. There is a particularly poignant discussion with the wife of a policeman. Mike gives a very personal and unique perspective of being a white man, married to a black woman. Does this give him a special insight? And what kind of conversations does he get, and how can they be helpful to all of us.

Our last stop in season two led us to Seattle, and the very unique, one of a kind shop, featuring macarons,wine, beer, champagne, and great coffee.
The shop is based on an original French cafe done in pinks and peach, with peacocks, furry chairs and chandeliers as accents. The owner Megan Wagstaff says Lady Yum is a perfect spot for a glass of champagne on a Wednesday afternoon. And yes they do have coffee!
Our first guest was Michelle. Not being a coffee drinker, but lover of the aroma, she still knows how to make the perfect cup of coffee for her spouse. What magic ingredient does she add to his daily java and is it worth trying? When they moved to England these devoted dog owners faced a major dilemma, regarding their “children”. Quarantining of Molly, Fred, Zach and Bucky was the first challenge, and how do they get to England? Most creative answer ever ! It involves the high seas! And a “loophole”. Twilight, Seattle, and fan fiction, sometimes you just take a leap of faith.
From Microsoft to Macaroons, Russell Wagstaff, husband and partner of owner Megan Wagstaff,left the corporate world to join his wife in this very successful venture. But how did he meet this future partner? Two people, 10 benches, possible budding romance.....and …nothing! Well something, but not your average dating time table. Listen to his story. There are movies that are made out of this scenario.
Jeffery and Mitch, our next guests were first timers at Lady Yum, and it was our lucky day getting to hear their very different stories. “ I can tell you I don’t love or drink coffee but I’d be lying”. We had way too many guffaws, with this couple. They compliment each other in a very special way.
Jeff works with nuclear fission and designs small modular nuclear reactors,( if he told me what he really did he would have to terminate me). Mitch changed careers and works with people in crisis, and loves it. His goal is to help his clients live independently. How did two opposites like this meet,and marry? Do you want the “official” or real story? That depends on who’s asking! When is the best time to come out to your mother? Why not while ice skating…no seriously, why not. We can tell you this, there was definitely a surprise that made him (and us) laugh. Imagine the scenario, you are on your way to North Dakota to meet the love of your life’s family, and most of them have been given very little notice of your relationship.Da..Da..Daaah. What is their biggest point of contention when it comes to having kids? Milwaukee, Pabst mansion, Aston Martin, and Lamborghini. What do these things all have in common? One WILD night. The stories they will (or will not) tell their children.
Felicia, our final guest this week is one of our primary reasons for visiting this fantastic store near Pioneer Square in Seattle. We first met Chris Rivera at White Dove Coffee in Flagstaff Arizona on season one, Episode 21 Peace Microsoft and the Weirdo Net. For the correlation to coffee listen to this episode to hear his whole background story. Chris is an agent for Aflac, an American insurance company and largest provider of supplemental insurance in the United States. During this pandemic he is maintaining his status as a health insurance advisor for small and local businesses in this region. You can imagine the calls that he is getting now in this time of Covid-19. One question however seems to be paramount on most peoples minds....Am I covered. Previously Chris met with clients, often in person, to discuss their healthcare needs and give guidance for specific coverage after a job loss. Listen along as we discuss these issues, and short term disability, with the specter of pandemic overhead. With this pandemic it seems like everyone knows, or is the someone now in the unemployment line. How has this affected his business, and what is the correlation to disability? He is still meeting with clients, but now, like most of the work force it is virtual, and from his home office. Did we get a warning about this “plague” as Chris calls it... how long did we have to get ready, and what did we do to prepare for the fight with our “invisible enemy”. In this new kind of warfare what is the ammunition and how can we be the “Rosie the riveter of our time. It used to be that the military were the only ones fighting, not with this pandemic. Just ask the doctors, nurses,respiratory therapists PA's,grocery store clerks and garbage men. There are still strategists ( the medical and scientific community) and then there are an awful lot of foot soldiers like you and me, carrying out the day to day fight through hand washing, social distancing, and simply staying at home. Can you really escape by retreating to your cabin or vacation home in an underpopulated area? This week we have all four of the owners present on a conference call to update us on how they are surviving the pandemic.
With Nick's talent as an accomplished woodworker, and professional photographers Login and Bonita, they transformed a dark and dingy tattoo parlor into a Pacific Northwest inspired original one of a kind store. This location draws artisans of all types. Think of a scaled down community centered REI with leather couches, local art, books, and beauty products including beard wax! I purchased Bawston & Tucker Solid Cologne while we were there but I am sadly running out! OK guys are you listening? I am running out! As far as their clothing line goes, soft, comfortable and stylish with a North Woods flair, what else could you ask for! Can you tell I love this store? Now how about the coffee! Small batch roasted in Morton WA. Whatever the specialty drink you may want, they will make it for you. Don’t leave without trying my favorite beverage, with turmeric,ginger, honey, cinnamon, clove,hemp milk and espresso. We tried to wheedle the recipe out of them, but trade secrets and all no such luck.

How do you run for political office in a time when shelter in place and stay at home orders are in effect? At the end of March we spoke to John Kiehne who is running for state representative in Missouri. Did this musician,turned politician (#musipolitician) have to reinvent the wheel when the Covid-19 outbreak occurred? Does campaigning in “Dollar Store” regions differ from more populated urban areas? What's a politician do when he/she can’t attend the tried and true fried chicken dinners, and other public functions that go along with campaigning? Shaking hands and kissing babies are currently a thing of the past. Will they ever return? Thinking outside the box is something John does well! Old School? New cutting edge tech? whats the best choice?. How about all of the above. What venues are available for a "live" town hall and how creative do politicians need to be? From phones to internet and how does a simple great photo enter in? Fundraising and broadband availability can pose another problem. Does making eye contact with another person make you susceptible to the virus, and other observations, from this "musipolitician”.
The new realities have forced everyone to change their routines including nursing home visitations, and in John’s situation, planning a funeral for his father in law, and what essential part did technology and Zoom play. Rural health care in the time of the pandemic, differs from urban centers. Good discussion on the issues associated with people who leave the cities and retreat to their rural "cabin" in search of refuge and "relief" from the sheltering in place and quarantining rules.
Our condolences to John and his wife Michelle, on the loss of her father.

Although we can no longer travel, we still get their perspective, on what this new reality looks like, in their community. Photography, wood working, and retail skills combined, with a desire to fill a space with local artisans, makes your perfect next coffee stop. A very eclectic space that offers up northwoods type clothing, homemade sweaters, gifts, and personal products like local beard wax. How did these two delightful people meet? Which one was shooting a wedding, and which one was a guest when their star crossed eyes met? The rest one might say “is history”, until someone decided to move to Thailand. Our first guest, Betsy Wentworth, owner of Coffee Girl has the best two word answer for “how do you keep employees”. She found out just how loyal her employees were when catastrophe struck. What would you do with your business if you woke up in a hospital bed and saw relatives from around the US standing at your bedside. Coffee Girl has mouth watering pastries, and scones that attract locals every day. And why would a friend travel a long distance just to make her scones. People may disagree about what makes a good scone, but Betsy’s answer is definitive.There were three lessons she learned while attending coffee school in Portland and says number three was the most important. What was it, and why does it make Coffee Girl so successful. As a twenty something her car broke down in Prescott Arizona, and how did that incident eventually lead her to Astoria. LUCKY LAGER AND THE SPICY WENCH Episode 53 Pirate Coffee Company. 10 Vista St, Depoe Bay, OR 97341
While traveling north on the 101 we encountered the charming town of DePoe Bay, Oregon. The base of Pirate Coffee Company, the whale watching capital of the Oregon coast, and home to the world’s smallest navigable harbor. Here we met owners Shae Palmer and her sister Bree Boaz. There is more to this family than we would have liked to cover, but we ran out of time! These sisters give the phrase “family ties” new meaning. If you want to be a member of this clan you better have a business plan….everyone works, even Shae’s children. Mom and dad live upstairs and are “retired” but still make the bakery component of this store out of this world. Made from scratch and NO RECIPES. If you go, ask for the blueberry cinnamon coffee cake. They don’t have it? don't be surprised, Mom makes whatever the spirit moves her to make. So do not ask what the special will be tomorrow, just show up and be amazed! They roast their own beans and you can get their great coffee online.
Our first guest Shae, at the tender age of 12 trained for the Olympics in water polo. At 13 she won the US Nationals. At 17 she was the first female to receive a full scholarship for water polo and became the NCAA all American. What then happened in her senior year that changed her life’s trajectory. Once you hear how Shae’s journey led her to Depoe Bay you won’t be surprised. From engineer and software developer in Silicon Valley, to coffee shop owner in Texas. See how family has influenced her decision making process. How many horses does one have to go through to get the “right one”? What one very devoted mother went through to get her daughter a horse perfect for barrel racing. Was the horse a gift? Shae should get parent of the year for teachable moments. Her children may call her a busy body, but do you know what that means? All is not what it seems. Sisters Bree,( a former Bank manager), and Amber (former chiropractor) also came back to Depoe Bay from Texas. What are their roles in the coffee business?
Bree shared the secret of why Pirate Coffee Co is the most popular coffee shop in DePoe Bay, and the answer may have something to do with Switzerland! A man walked into Pirate Coffee Co, ordered his coffee, and left without paying. Today that man and Bree are married! How does that work? Did he ever pay for his coffee? Bree’s discussion about children both the 2 and 4 legged kind will leave you with a new found insight into wanting to be a parent, when sometimes things don’t work out as you planned. The answer is heartwarming, and amazing. Coming to grips with the fact that you may never have children is hard and Bree shared their very personal story. A story that may lift hearts, and give hope to people facing the same obstacle. Our next interview with 11 year old Justice will explain it all. Moving from a state with multiple options for schooling to DePoe Bay where school was one hour away (with no bus service) what were the options? And how has that worked out. Not only does he have a keen sense of humor, his very articulate responses to some of our questions may make you rethink traditional education.
Justice explained the nuances of online homeschooling. Can he wear his pajamas to class? His 20 year projection may, or may not include taking over the coffee business, becoming a coder, or an archer on horseback. The possibilities are endless. You will thoroughly enjoy our conversation with this youngest barista, who just wants to focus on his goals.

From LA to Florence Oregon, Melanie Heard talks about her journey from tap dancing at the age of two with the original choreographer of Kids of the Kingdom at Disneyland to a full scholarship with the DC Kirov Ballet, and then on to the Joffrey Ballet Training Program.Why would she give up a fifty thousand dollar a year job to take on all the risk in opening up a theater of performing arts for kids? Her answer won’t surprise you after hearing her background story, and the generous nature of this wonderful small town. Is there anything wrong with not having everything at your fingertips? For people living in small towns the answer may be as simple as a gorgeous drive along Oregon's coast to a larger town isn’t all that bad.

Voted by Country Living, Florence is one of the best small towns in Oregon! That was evident as soon as we drove into this town of 8,000 on the banks of the Siuslaw River. What an authentic gem, and a secret we’d like to keep to ourselves. Unfortunately we feel,for our listeners sake, compelled to share our find with anyone who may be looking for the perfect getaway, a place to raise a family, or retire. As soon as you turn on to Bay Street, look riverside and you will see River Roasters, a historic former Evinrude outboard motor repair building. This former mechanics shop has been turned into one of the most inviting, rustic, friendly coffee shops on the PCH. Looking down the street at the Historic Old Town district seems like a movie set, complete with ornamental street lights, and benches to sit on and people, or seal watch. You can stroll even further down the peer and watch the river boats plying the waters. Facing the river across the street you will encounter dozens of shops, galleries, and farm to table restaurants.
Our first guest, Kathy Stone, owner of the once Siuslaw Coffee, now River Roasters was dreading becoming an empty nester, (even before she became one). She worried about how to fill her time, and took a leap of faith when Siuslaw Coffee became available. She purchased this historic building, and with her own personal touch, the rest, as they say is history. When in her twenties, she went to Europe with her sister, and they split up. Her advice,when directed to “a friend's house” to spend the night in Belgium... wear a bodysuit. But what did she do when invited a second time to sleep in someone else's room? How about the third time, and did she learn any lessons?
Ken Larson, a retired police officer gives sound advice when you are first being introduced to your newborn son. Hint:It has something to do with physiology,and marking territory.Why would his police dog bite another law enforcement officer, instead of going after the perpetrator? Meet Justin Walloferns, owner of the Great American Smokehouse whose resume alone could have filled the entire episode this week. Cooking is his passion and he opened his first restaurant at the tender age of 24,chef to musical and political celebrities (think Beale Street and McCain/Obama), to executive chef for a Children's Hospital. The list goes on and on. After listening to Justin it’s easy to understand his passion, for cooking and the community. His life has not been without its trials however, and this soul barring interview will give a glimpse into a complex and amazing man. I think we only scratched the surface. Trying to snag him for an interview was not easy, since cooking was just one of his myriad of jobs. The question we had of Johnny after learning about a bet he had lost with an experienced hunter, is why oh why... and did we hear right...eyeball?. Be prepared hilarious and somewhat gross, but the kind of story you will share. Put together flames, smoke, handle-less cast iron skillet,and a few week old inedible material to begin with, and what do you have? Does the abbreviation PU ring a bell. Misty Crawford, owner, explained in painful detail why she chose to move to Brookings, and how her two Bell and Whistle Coffee stores came to be. There is help for people with PTSD. After graduating from the University of Oregon but not before writing his 1st (2nd) novel, he settled down in Eureka where,when he has the cash, he pursues the tried and true style of writing in a coffee shop. A common refrain we heard during our wonderful time at this "coffee shop" was about the welcoming pull you in atmosphere. You may start out looking for one thing and come out the other side as a staff member! Annalisa responded to a literal and figurative knock on the door as a young girl, that truly changed her life. Can someones ask for help, turn into a complete change in character? We find out how shyness can be a skill set. What if you think you are not good at anything? Find out about the positives of what may be an often overlooked hidden talent. What would your definition of the word "significant" be? Annalisa shares with us her insights, how significance was defined for her, and what she didn't want to be known for. Quick, if you are living in a third world country,what would be the thing that you would what to change first? The answer from a woman in Burma/Myanmar when asked will likely come as a complete (but logical) surprise. It may make you reconsider your world view.
How many people do you know that started any college, much less the elite halls of Cal Poly Tech at the age of 16? Our next guest Joe shared the ups and downs of starting an advanced degree, at a young age and not in your native country. Front Porch is a "coffee shop" where students from Cal Poly Tech University in San Luis Obispo California gather, share, and bond in an almost magical setting,without judgment, for coffee and conversation. Over 400 students pass through the doors of this one of a kind coffee shop every day! The philosophy of this coffee shop is unlike any other location we have been to on the Roadshow thus far. This is a faith based place that defines the phrase "all inclusive" and truly does not push their religiosity. In fact just the opposite. Joel Drenckpohl, the director, our guest this week loves the idea of sharing, challenging and defending, different opinions and beliefs. As we dive into his background you will see why, and how, this unique place came to be. Laguna Beach, CA Pride Fest
Prior to starting this season we had talked about the huge amount of interest in all things CBD. We had initially started by looking at recruiting a store that served CBD mixed in coffee, or a store that served coffee beans infused with CBD. While in Laguna Beach visiting Catmosphere (episodes 34-35), we went on a very short road trip (3 blocks away) to check out the local Pride Fest and interview one of the founders of an online CBD company called Caribee. This company in fact won the “Best CBD Company” at the consumer CBD Reviews Awards. Their goal was to not only have a product that was “functional” from a CBD standpoint, but one that tasted good as well. This sounded like something our “beverage” podcast needed to investigate further.
We ended up spending a delightful portion of the afternoon with the entrepreneurial owner,founder and some of the other partners from Caribee, a company specializing in CBD. The more we talked the more we learned and hopefully you will too. An illuminating conversation, with Pride music and festivities playing in the background!

1969 REUNION
This week we veered off the Pacific Coast Highway to attend my 50th high school reunion in Phillipsburg, Kansas.
As a welcoming gift when we pulled into my old home town, a semi-truck in front of us kicked up a rock and cracked our 1 week old, just replaced windshield. New one put in before we left on our travels from a separate crack! Welcome back now get out...was this an omen, or were we off to a good start all bad luck out of the way.
During the four days of festivities I was able to wrangle a few of my classmates in front of the CCCRS Microphone (there may have been some wine induced bribery but as this was high school all lips are sealed,and the code of silence prevails).
With the help of a trusty Western Flyer “no speed” bike how do you "check in, or check up" on a the “dreamiest of teachers”. No such thing as a teacher crush just good citizenry.What does a new set of luggage have to do with teaching? This week we are back at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters for part two. We had an in depth discussion about the coffee business, and what it takes to open a new store. Why do some startups fail while others succeed? Finding an under-served area is the first criteria, but making sure they maintain the high level of quality, both in coffee and staff, is equally as important. Their goal is to represent the commitment they have to farmers, their individual stories, and transmitting this consistently to each customer as well.
What makes Bird Rock the best it can be? According to Jeff it’s keeping the coffee culture consistent and tight, utilizing, while nurturing the skill sets of each employee, and promoting from within. As an example, Jacob,(one of our interviewees this week) is now the green buyer and began as a barista at Bird Rock.
Bird Rock's philosophy on training baristas is much more extensive than simply teaching how to do a pour over. Your barista will know what goes on behind each cup of coffee they hand you, from origin, to farmers, to roaster. Their goal is to have any questions you have about coffee explained by the person that makes your coffee.The information gleaned at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters will be knowledge for you wherever you may get your next cup of coffee.
You will learn how Jeff survived riding up a mountain in Columbia with armed guards just to see the farm of an award winning coffee. Did he really understand who and what FARC was? We learned about coffee being the one constant in Columbia, a country sometimes filled with turmoil and strife. In Maritza's telenovela, "coffee loving Latino meets coffee loving gringo". Only after they were married would Maritza find out it was her "crazy gringo" that went up the mountain.
Jacob's one wish was both poignant, and funny! Is knowing how to speak Spanish really that important in the coffee industry? While traveling with a band the lesson he learned that would be best practiced by all of us.

Coffee drinkers have different ideas of perfection. For some it's the type of roast, while for others its the search for origin, fair-direct trade or a specific blend. Do you now how to use your local owner or barista to choose and prepare your favorite mouth watering elixir? Does your favorite coffee shop give back to the community and to the farmers who grow and produce the beans that eventually end up in your cup?
In this episode of CCCRS (Tripped and Fell into Coffee) owners Jeff Taylor, and his wife Maritza, along with coffee buyer Jacob White, took time out of their busy schedules to sit down and talk with us, about all of that and more! The discussion in two parts that followed,we feel, is a master course in all things coffee.
In 1993 Jeff was a photojournalist in Topeka Kansas, and discovered Topeka was "coffee dry". Out of "manic panic" and necessity for quality coffee he opened a coffee shop. Now 27 years later they have a thriving business with six coffee stores in San Diego, and is now part of the PT's coffee family of Topeka Kansas. His philosophy is to concentrate on making the absolute best coffee and the customers will find you.
Maritza is from Columbia and in charge of quality control. Her internship from college led her to the Federation of Coffee Growers, a specialty coffee program, and then to judging coffee competitions, where she met Jeff, and it was a match made in coffee heaven. With her sensitive palate it was agreed that Maritza " always has the final say when it comes to selecting coffee."
Jacob went from barista to coffee buyer where he forecasts and assesses the needs of exporters, and farmers. He also works with quality control and roasters to meet the requirements of customers and growers. From roast profiles, to what makes a good barista Jacob has the answer.
Not only did they receive 2012 roster of the year by Roast Magazine and produce 90 + coffee from Coffee Review, Maritza is a Q grade certified roaster ( a person who is certified by the Coffee Quality Institute who is able to analyze Arabica coffee through smell & taste on site). They also won the 2017 Good Food Award.
From selecting the right beans, the "right"country of origin for you. to choosing the perfect roasting profiles, and to what makes a great barista, this episode may become a reference source for anyone who loves coffee.

Cross Country Coffee Roadshow has come to the end of season one.
We’ve had a wonderful journey, met fabulous people, and have listened to stories from the heartfelt, to the hilarious.
Thank you to everyone, you entrusted us with your stories, invited us into your coffee shops, and lives. You provided us with hospitality love and laughs, while giving us enough material to put out this full season.
In order to have a season two we now have to ask for your help. We want you to buy us a cup of coffee. We have done this through a GoFundme page,titled $5 to cross the country with coffee. If we are successful season two will begin recording at the end of May and back on the air, with new episodes, in the Fall of this year. 806 is not your “typical” coffee shop. No prescribed dress code, or plastic,robotic “Welcome to 806, how may I help you”. You will however be treated with respect, and more often than not be greeted by name, and given the perfect cup of joe. Pretentious it ain't !
This coffee shop is the poster child for social justice, and promoting the arts. The folks we met are all regulars and came here for specific reasons,not the lest of which is the background soundtrack, a true story of its own.
In just a few short hours we learned what happens when a preconceived notion of the perfect marriage suddenly changes, what happens when you are diagnosed with cancer in your early 20’s, and what the,not always apparent, collateral damage of schizophrenia may be for a family.
Is art the “easy” subject to teach? What happens when an art teacher whose mission is to help all kids connect with art, faces the current trend of “school budget cuts”. Not to mention the fact that he is a past world champion air hockey player!

Following his passion landed him a job simply because he was searching for a great cup of coffee. Make the big bucks and go into education. Second chances are given to those who work for it. Tulsa Oklahoma’s Cirque Roasters is a very good reason to stop for coffee on Route 66. Friends since high school Garrett O’Dell and John Pierce, both shared a love of coffee. By their early 20's they decided to put their dreams into action, and within a few short months opened a very unique one of a kind coffee shop. Their first hire, Austin Fogt became part owner. Their focus is mainly on coffee, not food. Their signature drinks are outstanding, and their focus is on the science of coffee in a non elitist way.To geek out over coffee is a commonly used phrase at Cirque.
Tulsa’s population is over 400,000 and has something for everyone. Tulsa is the 2nd largest city in Oklahoma. It has two universities, two famous art museums, along with professional opera and ballet companies. If art-deco architecture is your passion you have to look no further than Tulsa. We found Tulsa very welcoming and easy to navigate, and no wonder, it has been called one of “America's most livable large cities” by Partners for Livable Communities/ Forbes.
