Today’s question of the day is quite complicated and to answer it properly would be a case-by-case decision after investigating the specifics of the situation. The point to illustrate is that we should look deeper than being 100% anti-plastic in every scenario, as scenarios probably exist where there may not be a better option when all factors are considered.

Lots of people spend lots of time defining "sustainable packaging" and I'm starting to think it's a waste of time. It's highly subjective and we would be much better off measuring the positive and negative impacts being made by packaging. This is a much better way to evaluate whether or not the packaging is good for the planet!

Can we create an objective way to determine whether or not something is sustainable? I give it a crack in today's show. This is an experiment and a step in the right direction, but far from perfect. Progress, not perfection!
Here are the 3 main questions:
- What are the positive and negative environmental effects at the beginning of life?
- What are the positive and negative environmental effects at the end of life?
- How effectively does the packaging reduce the amount of raw material required?

This is proposal the last step, because we can take a lot of action independent of infrastructure.
But yes, we need better infrastructure to be as sustainable as possible. Infrastructure can help minimize the environmental impact both for beginning of life (plants to produce sustainable raw materials at scale, packaging manufacturing plants as close to possible to where the product is manufactured) and end of life (better recycling, availability of composting, drop off & sterilization facilities to allow reusable packaging, etc)

I am a firm believer that we need a catalyst to accelerate the sustainable packaging movement!
More brands would spend money on sustainable packaging if they were inspired by the options.
Just earlier today, my finance showed me a plastic shopping bag from a top US retailer. The bag read: ‘Be fashion forward. Please recycle or reuse this bag!’
This is the status quo.
Now, you know by now I am not a fan of being a perfectionist and we should to follow Step 2 and take the available gains.
But I think the sustainable packaging industry as a whole needs a catalyst that is objectively good for the planet to build excitement and credibility around the idea of sustainable packaging. I think that hemp is a great candidate to be that catalyst.

Recycling is not dead, but we need to recycle better. When you go to your local recycling plant, you will see plastics sorted and then later ground up to then be shipped to a product manufacturer to turn those plastics into new products. But, if the quality of the recycled plastics is not high enough, then there is no use the material and therefore, we are all just wasting our time. That is why I say, we need cleaner recycling, so the material quality of the recycled plastics is high enough where we can actually use it to create new products.
