“Every Day it Rains” was an original idea by Johnathan Mooney about a family member waiting for a loved one who never came home from war, however the original idea changed completely with the start of the global pandemic followed by tragic murders that resulted in social unrest and protests.Of the re-visiting, singer Christian says “I wrote lyrics just coming home from traveling in Europe when the lockdowns started. (At the same time, my stepfather died).”“I started thinking: who am I if I don´t interact with other people? Who am I without my children, my friends, my wife, my colleagues?

4 months ago we wrote and produced a song to benefit a Ukraine charity, the ComeBack Alive Foundation. A Ukrainian non-governmental organization that supports Ukraine through defense initiatives to supply technology, training, and ammunition to help save the lives of Ukrainians and help soldiers and civilians defend Ukraine.

Unlike previous releases, the lyrics and inspirations on this one is a bit of a paradox” says singer/co-writer, Christian Granquist. “Some of our "usual" vocal topics like loneliness, isolation, and of course death have become so much more relevant during the pandemic. And for the exact same reason, they appear less relevant, as they become less metaphorical.
I think the energy in the opening song “My Dying Words” came from the sense I saw with people returning from the near death-experiences of COVID, and of course, my own COVID hospitalization.”

When asked about the writing process for this new album, singer Christian Granquist said:
“Lyrical inspiration comes from feelings that not are completely tolerated, whether being forbidden pleasures or difficult emotions like jealousy or antipathy. In that way, it works a bit like therapy, approaching difficult subjects by using lyrical metaphors.”
Regarding how existing fans will feel about the new music, he said that “I think there’s maybe a risk that some listeners will miss some of the drama from early work. But as I see it, it’s a bit like musical chairs. On Dark Hallways the music has stopped. And what is there to do when no chairs are left?”

While Johnathan|Christian were working on their latest album, a former middle schoolmate of Johnathan Mooney’s, Henry Vaccaro Jr., proposed a collaboration with a family member of a very special musical clan.:"My father was a close friend of Johnny Cash, whom he had met through his role with the Kramer Guitar Company,” writes Vaccaro. In fact, Kramer Guitar grew to become the largest American Manufacturer of electric guitars in the 1980’s. “My Dad was a huge Johnny Cash fan and brought the entire band guitars in 1976 and our families have been friends ever since. “
The idea behind this unique collaboration all came together through Vaccaro’s love of dark wave and post-punk. “I first met Johnny Cash’s grandson, Thomas, when we were children and now watching him break out on his own I was blown away by his uncanny vocal resemblance to his Grandfather. His phrasing, tone, spirit, drive and humility are all these remarkable traits passed down from the Man in Black. Thomas is a true dark soul but with country blood running is his veins. I was already a fan of Johnathan|Christian so when I first heard Thomas covering "Hurt" I thought between both parties, they would not only pay homage to Thomas' grandfather but also to the original Trent Reznor version."
Knowing that Johnathan|Christian had huge shoes to fill, the band enlisted some help from old friends Clause Larsen (Leæther Strip) and multi-media artist Victor Devilbliss, a.k.a. Michal Bann of 90's band Advent Sleep, whom coincidentally, was going through his own personal struggles since the death of his nephew, Los Angeles musician, Shawn Bann. "Working on this put me into a place emotionally that I needed to be. In the process of putting the remix together of Johnathan|Christian’s cover, I kept thinking about Shawn. I’m not incredibly spiritual, but my nephew’s (Shawn) influence on me permeated and I feel (that) he was ultimately the inspiration for the ‘Love Forever’ mix with the title paying homage to one of his songs.

Alternative Dark Rock musicians Johnathan|Christian have released their long-awaited LP record album, titled, “Beautiful Hideous.” The album, their debut LP release, is comprised of 10 original tracks and remixes by UK industrial pioneer Martin Bowes and New York Avant-garde artist Bryin Dall making for a colorful and comprehensive introduction to the Johnathan|Christian sound.
The record, which has an official release date of 8 November 2013, has already begun to hit mainstream media with considerable force, bringing fans of the dark music subculture thronging to Johnathan|Christian websites and music outlets.
Johnathan|Christian are Johnathan Mooney and Christian Granquist, veterans of the alternative music scene. Composer Johnathan Mooney originally played keyboard for New York's popular band, “The New Creatures,” and is now living in Orange County, California. Christian Granquist is well known in the Swedish Post-Punk scene having played with the members of the pop trio Day Behavior and is the keyboardist for the Stockholm electronic band “The Atom”
Johnathan|Christian cite darkwave artistic influences including such performers as Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Mission UK and the Cure. Intuitively, their own music typifies the traditional dark wave sound, adding in soaring, epic refrains and dramatic fugues that create a style all their own.
Of their particular style and chemistry, Mooney writes, “Being more of a composer than a lyrical writer, my music is all voxless [without vocals]. When I come up with an idea for a song, it’s not just a song – it’s a vision. I’m actually hearing a whole storyline in my head like scoring to a film. When I heard one of [Granquist's] Atom tracks on, I knew right away that a unique voice like his would really compliment my dark vision.”
Singer Granquist concurs thus: “Lyrically I seek inspiration in pretty dark themes: conflicts, separation anxiety and death. These require a certain type of quasi-cinematic ambiance which I’m not fully able to convey in my own music. Johnathan, on the other hand, had it already perfectly wrapped in a black little box. I directly saw that my voice structure and lyrics would be a perfect fit with his picturesque style of writing very emotional music.”
Dave Kendall creator of MTV's “120 Minutes” and host on Sirius/XM's First Wave Channel writes of Johnathan|Christian, “[This is] grand, rich, high-class melancholia. Get your Goth on.”
The United Kingdom's Nightbreed Radio calls their sound, “Epic!”
DJ Cruel Britannia of the Fadeout Podcast said, “Their sound is an accessible yet dark blend of well-constructed tracks which would be just as at home in the closing credits of a film as they would by themselves on your MP3 player.”
DJ Paul V of The Independent FM said that Johnathan|Christian have a “Definite Peter Murphy vibe.”
“[Johnathan|Christian have] real quality and emotion,” said Martin Bowes of Attrition.
