Many parents are faced with what seems to be 'catch 2': How do I support my grown-up off-spring in becoming independent?

Do I let my adult child live in my home while he or she struggles to find a job? Well, there are many ways in which you can encourage your child to leave home and get a job.

Here are the top four tips to help your 'overstayer' become more independent.

Change your mindset as a parent. You're child isn't a baby anymore; in reality, your adult child is fully-grown and equal to you. Thinking of them as incompetent highlights your parental mode, making you somewhat protective. Allowing your child to grow is essential as it gives them the opportunity to develop new skills such as; independence, finance skills etc. Of course, your adult child may be uncomfortable with some of the steps you’re taking to encourage more responsibility but it could be for the best. Fight your sensitive emotions! It’s now time to recognize what your limits are. You need to identify the rules you will stick too and the ones you wont. You need to work on these weakened emotions, i.e. giving them extra money or saying you will do the housework. DO NOT DO IT. They can take care of it themselves. Boundaries! Step two should give you courage to share the new different reality with your adult child. State what you will and will not put up with and create some sort of a contract that specifies the terms of him/her living there. This is a settlement between two adults; an adult child may decide he or she doesn’t like the contract and will decide to move out. Bye Bye Pennies! A huge part of making your adult child become more independent is to stop paying for all the “extras.” Extras include things that he or she views as essentials that really aren’t such as; mobile phones, internet, computers, haircuts, make-up. If they don’t have the money for cigarettes or alcohol, they don't get them. You may find these guidelines somewhat daunting but think of the life you could both lead with your new found independence.

If you want to hear some of the struggles around an adult living at home, our reporter Corey Seaward spoke to one family who have four children living at home whom are in the 'young adult' bracket with a failure to launch.
