I call today’s idea “website maintenance 101”.
Business owners, listen up!!
You need to be keeping your website updated and it needs to be done on a regular basis. A website is like a car and it needs to be serviced regularly!
Sadly, most business owners, spend 5-10k to get a new flashy website but then they forget about it… and that’s a bad idea!
First and foremost, if you're not updating software, it can become a hacking opportunity those dodgy characters out there. Yes, people actually spy on outdated websites, hacking into them and using them to spend spam and other use them for other malicious activities.
Then there are the plugins that you’re using, these add extra functionality to your site (like booking calendars, product finders, SEO and security plugins) they need to get updated too.
Obviously like all things in life, without regular maintenance, things break. Which is a bad thing when your website is the most important marketing asset you have! So take my advice and service your website on a regular basis.

I call today’s idea the “little bit geeky but important, website update.”
Every business owner needs to update their website to be HTTPs - yes, I know it’s geeky but it’s important. The ‘s’ in ‘HTTPs’ means, secure and Google has confirmed it’s a ranking factor.
That’s not to mention some web browsers (like Chrome) display if a site is secure or not. You’ll see it in the top left hand corner near the website address?
When your website isn’t secure it can sometimes show an exclamation point ! or worse, it can even say “not secure.” Of course, you want to go with a website that says secure and has the green lock... that's what HTTPS offers!
So, what should you do?
http://www.yourdomain.com or https://www.yourdomain.com
Or contact your web host and ask if they can help…
Just remember, if you’re asking your host, tell them they must setup some redirects too. Depending on the size, age and existing setup, there are a few steps in the migration process to ensure you reduce any ranking fluctuations… and if you have no idea what I’m talking about, it’s best to give us a call.
The whole goal here is to get your website in beautiful shape, giving your clients and Google what they’re looking for. This will help you get more traffic and visibility online.

I call today’s idea “Quality Wins Over Quantity.”
It’s time to explode an SEO myth! Often people think “the more content that’s on my website, the better”... but that's not the case.
The trust is, if your website is filled with rubbish content, even if there's lots of it, this actually sends a bad quality signal to Google.
Here’s an example, let’s say you have a blogpost answering a particular question that your customers has but it’s answered poorly - it’s incomplete, missing advise and is clearly written for SEO purposes and trying to game Google, rather than helping your visitors.
Ask yourself, “What happens when people visit this page?”
Simple, they quickly hit the “back button” right?! And what do you think Google thinks about that? Clearly the content mustn’t be helpful… or quite simply, it’s crap content.
Yes, Google’s watching, they’re always watching and the biggest thing they’re watching is what your visitors do. What does the visitor do when they get to your website? How long do they hang around? Do they explore multiple pages?
One of the signals they measure is called the “Bounce rate”. Now, without getting too technical, a bounce rate is simply the percentage of visitors to a particular website who navigate away from the site after viewing only one page. A rising bounce rate is a sure sign that your page is boring or low quality :)
So what’s the secret?
You need to do is focus on building quality content, you need to build Authority Content!

I call today’s idea “a simple tip to generate more traffic to your website.”
All too often, we hear business owners complain about not getting enough traffic or visitors to their website and of the visitors they are getting, they’re not converting into paying clients.
Now, when we dig a little bit deeper, one of the biggest reasons is that they are relying on only one traffic source. Sure it’s great to have one primary traffic source perfected but to win online you've got to have multiple sources... whether that's SEO, YouTube, Facebook, Linkedin, AdWords and/or a podcast on iTunes… you need 3 or more working traffic sources.
The secret is to be firing on all cylinders. You need to be thinking about how can you get great quality leads and at a great price from multiple sources. Then once the visitor gets to your site, you need to think about how you can use Authority Content to engage and convert them.Yes, we know that puts a little bit of pressure on the business owner (or person in charge of marketing) but it can be easier than you think.

I call today’s idea “don’t try and game Google with dodgy backlinks.”
Yes, Google has changed, their algorithm has updated and getting great rankings isn’t all about the number of backlinks you can build. Many people still think it’s the be-all and end-all when it comes to search engine optimization (SEO).
Not sure what I’m talking about?
Building a backlink, is simply about getting references to your website. You know those little blue underlined links on other people's websites that point back to your website? They’re called backlinks and it’s what most people think about when they think SEO.
Yes, they're still important but there are more things to consider when building links. First and foremost, you need to make sure that you're building great quality links. Links that are helpful. Links that actually help your clients and prospects.
Great places to start are links from include: your suppliers and customers, links from industry blogs and submitting to key directories. In short, you just want to avoid link building strategies that focus solely on manipulating Google and don’t add any value.
Example: Let's say you’re a house cleaner and you go to the local real estate agent (since you already have a relationship with them) and you ask if they can put a link from their website to yours. You ask that is uses the anchor text “house cleaning services Ellwood” and it links back to your. That’s a quality link :)
Google see all these backlinks from all these websites pointing back to yours, and they go “this guy seems pretty popular, let’s move him up the Google rankings.” And that’s one of the secrets to ranking well on Google.
So the question to ask? What’s the secret to getting quality backlinks?
It all starts with having great quality content because it’s easier for people to link to sites with quality content than to those just looking for a cheap link.

I call today’s idea “Using Google My Business to get quick SEO wins.”
Have you claimed your Google My Business listing yet? It’s quick, it’s easy and it’s free. Yes, yes, yes... we know Google makes it confusing by renaming this product from Google local to Google Business, to Google My Business but the good news is, it’s all same service.
So what is it?
You know when you run a search on Google, and you see a business that appears on the right hand side of the search results with a whole bunch of extra information - things like photos, contact details, opening hours, etc? Or have you seen, when you run a search with a suburb or state in it and a map appears listing companies underneath.
That’s Google My Business.
Here’s the thing, there are a whole bunch of benefits for claiming your listing but one of best is that you can often win over large corporates because Google gives preference to the location someone is actually searching from. So in other words, you might appear higher because you're geographically more relevant to the searcher. Makes sense?
So, if you haven’t already, you need to claim your Google My Business listing and be sure to fill it out completely. Upload photos, add your contact details and fill out all the fields you can. Once you have it complete, your next step is to get your past clients to post reviews about your company on your Google My Business Listing.
There are a few other fancy things you can do like submitting your site to local directories like “True Local”, “Yellow Pages” and “Yelp”.... and all this combined can equal loads of free SEO traffic for you.
Sound good?

Spam SEO emails are on the rise, yet we all know you can’t get #1 on Google for $99 per month. I'm sure every business owner gets these emails offering guarantees, smoke and mirrors.
The sad thing is, it must be working, someone is replying, that's why they keep on sending those emails! It’s a numbers game.
So what should you be doing?
First and foremost, don’t reply to these offers! They’re a waste of time and money - clearly.
Next up, you need to understand that SEO isn't right for everybody. You need to do your sums to make sure it will work for your business. Start by asking questions like: - How much competition have you got? - What products and services are you selling? - What are the prices of your products and services? - How many additional products and services do you need to sell just to reach break-even?
Using this information, you can then determine if SEO even make sense for your business.
Finally, do your research to find a quality SEO provider. Looks for someone with experience and a great reputation (industry leaders are best) and most importantly, someone with transparent practices.
Long story short, there’s a bit of work to be done before you start SEOing your site.

I call today’s idea “Selecting the right bait, to catch the fish.”
So many business owners, when they start content marketing, make the critical mistake of generating the wrong type of content! You see, content marketing is a little bit like fishing - you need to have the right bait (content) and you need to be fishing in right spot (where you post your content).
Select the wrong bait, or the wrong location, and you’re sure to fail.
A perfect example of this would be a domestic cleaner making content about “how to iron the perfect shirt” and posting it on YouTube. Do you think person looking to hire a cleaner (their target audience) is really on YouTube searching “How to iron the perfect shirt”? ... probably not.
A better approach would be to create content that answers questions like:
“Should I feel guilty about getting a cleaner?” And/or “How should I prepare the house before the cleaner comes?”
Then, using Facebook, this content could then be shown to the exact target audience that matches their target profile. This is a far superior strategy that selects the right bait and places it in front of their target client.

I call today’s idea “the quickest and easiest way to create Authority Content.”
The problem = Most business owners don’t creating enough content.
Like most business owners, we get fired up listening to Timbo’s podcast. We get inspired. We want to create articles, videos and podcasts. We want to take the internet (and our competition) by storm with our amazing content marketing skills.
Sadly, we’re all too busy, and if we’re like most, we’re lucky to put out one blog post a quarter.
So what’s the secret to putting out high quality content consistently?
You need a system - you need the Authority Content Marketing System.
Here’s how it works.
#2. Get in front of a video camera and answer all the questions live and in one go. If possible, it’s a great idea to do this in front of a small audience too since it takes the performance to the next level.
#3. Take all the content you created and split it up. Make videos, audios and even have it transcribed so you can begin to repurpose it.
#4. The final step is to share it. Post it on your site, SEO it and share it on social media. Note: If you set this up correctly this can be done over a 3-6 month period. You’ll be surprised at how much this content can be repurposed.
Follow this process, create systems for it, batch your content creation and become a content machine… you can’t help but win with this strategy..
To find out more about this strategy check out my book Authority Content - it’s an Amazon BestSeller. Heck, I’ll even give you a free copy. As part of this special promotion we’re doing with Small Business Big Marketing - we’re giving away a limited number of my book, Authority Content.
Simply email dave@melbourneSEOservices.com, write “Authority Content” in the subject and I’ll send you a FREE copy.

I call today’s idea “Using customer testimonials to rank better in Google.”
Have you ever visited a website where they list every suburb in your state down in the footer?
You know the ones where, when you click on some of the pages, they’re almost exactly the same… typically all that’s changed is the suburb name itself.
These pages are usually created by someone who’s using outdated SEO strategies designed to “game the system”... but as we both know, Google is so much smarter than that.
Google calls these sorts of pages, “Doorway pages” and they’re consider as spam. In fact, if you have these sorts of pages on your site, there’s a good chance you are being penalised as a result… this will be hurting your traffic and rankings. Don’t take my word for it - here’s what Google says.
The good news is… there is a better way to rank for these sorts of geographic terms.
Create high quality case studies with your clients and publish them on your blog. Each case study can target a different location - a location where the client lives! This is a legitimate, value added way to build content relevant to a specific location and you know the best bit? Google and your projects love them!

I call today’s idea "the don’t apply silly outdated SEO strategies to your website tip".
Often business owners listen to a podcast, read a blog post and/or see something on social media talking SEO and it grabs their attention. They think...
“That’s what I've should to do?! I've got to find the keywords that people are searching for and then I need to put them everywhere I can on my website.”
What ends up happening is that they stuff that keyword wherever they can with little regard to readability or userability. But, as you could imagine, Google are a bit smarter than that. They call this dodgy SEO technique “keyword stuffing” and it’s the wrong thing to do.
Here’s what you should be doing:

I call today’s idea the “give more value and get more email subscribers strategy”. It's the simple way to build an email list for marketing!
Can you believe it… 97 percent of people who visit your website aren't ready to order your products/services on their first visit! Maybe they're in research mode. Maybe yours is the first website they’ve visited. Maybe they’re having a bit of a look around - a window shop!
And do you know what the saddest part of it all is?
Most business owners go to all of the work to get them there, but then don’t capture their details.
Here’s what you should do instead!
Simply offer something of value - it might be a PDF, a video, an audio or maybe even an ebook. Just something with high perceived value to the recipient - low-cost to the business owner. Something that someone would want to exchange a name and email for.
Then, once they opt-in, keep delivering value to them and stay front of mind so when they are ready to buy, your the first one that they choose! This is one of the easiest ways to build this asset of an email database that you can market to!

I call today’s idea the "make it easy for your visitors to contact you strategy" - it's a no-brainer conversion optimisation tip.
I can't believe how many websites I visit that don’t make it easy for me to find their contact details. It happens all too often. I find a small business where their products/services catch my eye and I want to email, phone and/or maybe even pay them a visit but guess what!? It's really hard to find their contact details.
But it doesn’t have to be this way!
Here are 3 things you can do to make it easier for people to contact you:
I know we sometimes laugh about these sorts of things but often the simplest ways to get a website working, is to just do the basics! Too many people miss the basics in my opinion. So go ahead, and make your contact details easy to find.
