The 45th stamp in the Black Heritage series honors sculptor Edmonia Lewis (circa 1844-1907). As the first African American and Native American sculptor to achieve international recognition, Lewis challenged social barriers and assumptions about artists in mid-19th century America. The stamp art is a casein-on-wood portrait of Lewis, based on a photograph taken in Boston between 1864 and 1871. Art director Antonio Alcalá designed the stamp with original art by Alex Bostic.

The OCA hopes this Internship will give Interns the experience, exposure, and networking opportunities needed to guide them in the pursuit of their professional goals.

Dr. Christy Clark-Pujara, Associate Professor of History at U.W. Madison, will discuss why race matters. Why is there such tension, division and disparities among racial groups in the United States of America, especially among white and black Americans? How and why did blackness and slavery become synonymous? How and why did a nation founded upon liberty and freedom perpetuate human bondage? What are the legacies of race-based slavery in America? These are a few of the questions explored in her presentation. Dr. Clark-Pujara fouces her research on the experiences of black people in French and British North America in the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries. She contends that the full dimensions of the African American and American experience cannot be appreciated without reference to how black people managed their lives in places where they were few. Dr. Clark has a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa; an M.A. from the University of Iowa; and a B.A. from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul MN.

There will be a follow-up public meeting in the summer to present and gather additional input on the draft corridor recommendation, using input gathered from this meeting.
This second public meeting is part of a broad public engagement effort that began in December 2018 to understand community needs, concerns, and priorities for BRT. We invite you to share your input and join us in exploring what BRT could mean for the future of transportation in Madison.

Reanae McNeal is an award-winning international performing artist, inspirational speaker, acclaimed vocalist, oral HERstorian, visual artist, griotess (storyteller), performing art poet, and cultural activist. Reanae’s specialty is storytelling in the African/African-American/African-Native American tradition. She plays over twenty African and Native American instruments. These instruments come from the countries of Turtle Island/United States, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, and Uganda. Her acclaimed award-winning one-woman plays centering on the diversity of women’s lives have been featured nationally and internationally as testimonies to the endurance of women across social locations. These plays include Don’t Speak My Mother’s Name in Vain, Blues Women Don’t Wear No Shoes, And Still I Fly, and Blood at the Roots: African Native American Women as well as others.
Dr. Bettina L. Love is an award-winning author and Associate Professor of Educational Theory & Practice at the University of Georgia. Her research focuses on the ways in which urban youth negotiate Hip Hop music and culture to form social, cultural, and political identities to create new and sustaining ways of thinking about urban education and intersectional social justice. Her research also focuses on how teachers and schools working with parents and communities can build communal, civically engaged, anti-racist, anti-homophobic, and anti-sexist educational, equitable classrooms. For her work in the field, in 2016, Dr. Love was named the Nasir Jones Hiphop Fellow at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University. She is also the creator of the Hip Hop civics curriculum GET FREE.

Morning Keynote, Adrienne Keene, is a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. She holds a doctorate in Culture, Communities and Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her research focuses on college access for native students and the role of pre-college access programs and student success. Her dissertation is titled: "College Pride, Native Pride, and Education for Nation Building: Portraits of Native Students Navigating Freshman Year." She is also a blogger, author and activist.
Afternoon Keynote, Yosimar Reyes, is a nationally acclaimed poet, educator, performance artist and speaker. He was born in Guerrero, Mexico and raised in East San Jose, California. Reyes explores migration and sexuality in his work. The Advocate named Reyes one of the “13 LGBT Latinos Changing the World” and Remezcla named him one of the "10 Up and Coming Latinx Poets You Need to Know". In his YWCA keynote speech, he shares a video he wrote and narrated as well as a performance.

The Historic Preservation Plan will provide a framework for future preservation that goes beyond the City's current, primarily regulatory, role. It will recommend strategies to more effectively integrate historic preservation into public policy, explore zoning and land use tools, capitalize on economic development and financial incentives, and encourage heritage tourism. This process will employ strategies to engage, educate, and connect with all the groups that make up Madison's unique history, with a particular emphasis on traditionally underrepresented groups.

The City of Madison and Dane County observe the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. Frank Humphrey delivers this year's keynote address. Frank Humphrey has given a full life of service that spans over 40 years with the NAACP and other community service and civil rights organizations. He currently serves as President of the NAACP Wisconsin State Conference. He served on the NAACP National Board for more than a decade and as a member of the NAACP Executive Committee under the leadership of the legendary civil rights icon, Julian Bond. He has served as NAACP National Board Asst. Treasurer and on numerous national NAACP Committees including Audit, Advocacy & Policy, Budget & Finance, and Legal Resolutions and Membership Committees. He served as Vice Chair of the Convention Planning Committee and was instrumental in bringing the NAACP National Convention to Milwaukee in 2005. His service has also included being designated the National Board Appointed Administrator for NAACP branches in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Las Vegas, Nevada and Charlotte, North Carolina. In 2016, he was elected as a corporate board member of the $2.6 billion U.W. Credit Union Board of Directors.

The Madison Police Dept’s Special Investigations Unit along with the Community Against Violence Team will conduct a “Notification Call-In Meeting.” As part of the Department’s Focused Deterrence program, The Madison Police Department’s SIU and the Community Against Violence Team will meet with repeat, violent offenders from our community. At this meeting a Law Enforcement Panel will address the offenders and notify them that they will be receiving special attention due to their violent histories. A Community Team working in conjunction with Untied Way and Madison Urban Ministry will also address the offenders and offer them the opportunity to receive resources to help them with life challenges such as housing, dependency treatment, and education. The message from both panels will be the same – “We care about you but your violence must stop.”

Dr. Araceli Alonso has conducted extensive international research on women's issues especially on those that imply the violation of women's human rights, such as Female Genital Mutilation and Sex Trafficking. Dr. Alonso developed the first class taught at UW-Madison on Human Trafficking and Human Rights. She is a Faculty Associate at the School of Medicine and Public Health at UW-Madison. She is also working with three international NGOs to develop programs for women's empowerment in the United States, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, and Cuba.

The Madison Police Dept’s Special Investigations Unit along with the Community Against Violence Team will conduct a “Notification Call-In Meeting.” As part of the Department’s Focused Deterrence program, The Madison Police Department’s SIU and the Community Against Violence Team will meet with repeat, violent offenders from our community. At this meeting a Law Enforcement Panel consisting of Chief Noble Wray, United States Attorney John Vaudreuil, District Attorney Ismael Ozanne, Sheriff David Mahoney, and agency heads from FBI, ATF, DEA, IRS,DCI and others will address the offenders and notify them that they will be receiving special attention due to their violent histories. A Community Team working in conjunction with Untied Way and Madison Urban Ministry will also address the offenders and offer them the opportunity to receive resources to help them with life challenges such as housing, dependency treatment, and education. The message from both panels will be the same – “We care about you but your violence must stop.”

4th District Alder Mike Verveer and Capitol Neighborhoods, Inc., host this meeting to solicit input on the plan by the Block 100 Foundation to redevelop the 100 block of State Street. Jerry Frautschi and George Austin of the Block 100 Foundation present their plans for the project, and citizens (as well as members of City committees such as the Urban Design Commission) ask questions and voice their opinions.
David Baskerville, who served on economic development groups under Jim Doyle and is an internationally-regarded business consultant, will speak about what he calls “stretch targets” for Wisconsin economic development; his premise is that such targets are needed to get Wisconsin moving again both economically and educationally.
This session explores the relationship between multi-generational trauma and oppression experienced by African Americans, and contemporary issues of educational achievement, juvenile justice, interpersonal relationships, and sexuality facing African-American children and youth. This workshop also examines the relationship between current and historical stressors unique to economically disadvantaged African American male youth by investigating issues of violence victimization, violence witnessing, urban hassles, racial socialization, issues of respect, and the presence of violence among these youth.
Harley Eagle is of Dakota and Anishinabe decent. He is the co-coordinator of Indigenous work for the Mennonite Central Committee Canada, a Restorative justice practitioner, and dismantling racism/oppression trainer. Harley will look to his Dakota traditions and experience in working with Indigenous and diverse communities in both Restorative Justice and dismantling oppression to explore what it might mean to address racial harms using Restorative concepts that embrace a fuller Indigenous worldview.
Author, Speaker, and Professor, Dr. Joy DeGruy, has been lauded as the most dynamic and inspirational presenter on the topics of culture, race relations, education, and contemporary social issues today. Her theory of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome suggests that centuries of slavery followed by systemic racism and oppression have resulted in multigenerational adaptive behaviors, some of which have been positive and reflective of resilience, and others that are detrimental and destructive.
Dr. Fania E. Davis, Civil Rights Attorney and Director of Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth, will focus on the contemporary U.S. restorative justice movement and race. Does this new – but ancient – paradigm of justice that privileges healing over punitive responses to wrongdoing have the potential to push back the “New Jim Crow” and render mass incarceration (particularly of African American males) obsolete? If not, why not? If so, how so, and what are the challenges and potential pitfalls?
The 2011 YWCA Racial Justice Summit features this Keynote address from Oscar Reed, who has dedicated the past 25 years of his life to Restorative Justice work youth, primarily with low-income, challenged inner-city youth and families. He is co-founder of The Restorative Way and he is a trainer for the Center for Restorative Justice and Peacemaking.

In recent years a persistent theme of her work has been the range of social problems associated with incarceration and the generalized criminalization of those communities that are most affected by poverty and racial discrimination.

This session includes presentations on Robert’s Rules of Order; ethics rules; the role of Alders on these bodies; and Open Meetings and Public Records regulations.
The League of Women Voters of Dane County presents as its October 2011 Issues Forum a discussion of the role of the Federal Government in public education. The panel includes Deputy Superintendent Michael Thompson, Department of Public Instruction; Professor Gloria Ladson-Billings, Department of Curriculum & Instruction, UW–Madison; and Associate Professor Doug Harris, Department of Education Policy Studies, UW–Madison. He speaks to the continuing need for spiritual healing as well as help with material goods and rebuilding homes, schools, clinics, etc. In partnership with Mike Boehm, the 2008 UNA Global Citizen of the Year, Mr. Do has worked tirelessly on MQI humanitarian projects in Vietnam.

With more and more Wisconsin residents having concerns over the impact of campaign contributions on judicial decisions, is merit selection of judges the answer? Justice Roggensack discusses these and other related issues.
Adverse Drug Events are a major cause of falls among the elderly (a group that is going to increase 130 percent in the next 20 years in Dane County). United Way’s Safe and Healthy Aging Initiative aims to reduce these events, and this program notes the launch of United Way’s efforts. WISC-TV’s Neil Heinen moderates this program, which includes several speakers who will address the size and scope of the problem and how United Way plans to address the issue.

The Madison Trust for Historic Preservation is a nonprofit organization established in 1974 to help preserve the architectural and historical heritage of the greater Madison area through advocacy and education. The Trust annually honors projects such as the Stewardship Award for the preservation of Camp Randall Memorial Park. The theme of the 2011 awards event is the sesquicentennial of Wisconsin’s involvement in the Civil War, and the program will feature remarks from Civil War historian and award-winning journalist, Lance Herdegen, former director of the Institute of Civil War Studies at Carroll University.

The 22nd Annual Juneteenth Day celebrates the culture of Black, Caribbean and African parts of the black community and unites their shared heritage through music, dance, storytelling, poetry and food. This year’s Celebration theme is "Celebrating Our Contributions...Past Present and Future." The overall theme of the Madison Juneteenth Day Celebration is “Harambee” (pulling together).
This program focuses on responses to human trafficking in Wisconsin on local, systemic and academic levels. The panel features Marianna Smirnova, human trafficking policy specialist with the Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault; Jo-Ann Gruber Hagen, founder of Slave Free Madison, a community-based group raising awareness about the problem of human trafficking in Wisconsin; and Professor Margo Kleinfeld of UW-Whitewater, author of "Who are Victims of Human Trafficking in Wisconsin? Norma Berkowitz was the recipient of the UNA-USA Dane County’s 2010 Global Citizen of the Year award. She founded and developed the Friends of Chernobyl Centers U.S. (FOCCUS) in 1994. FOCCUS funds programs that help deal with local issues arising from post-Chernobyl health and psychosocial problems and that foster community development. Norma talks about the Chernobyl accident, its impact upon the Ukraine, the status of the Chernobyl site today and the role of the United Nations in the aftermath of the accident.

After a decade living on the east coast and working in Washington DC, Kaleem Caire returned to Madison, his hometown, to take the helm at the Urban League of Greater Madison. He worked for national-level non-profits like Fight For Children and major foundations, like Target, and has returned with big city bluster and big ideas. In his first month in the job as the president for Urban League, he demanded percentages from the Madison Metropolitan Public School District about graduation rates for black students, a woeful percentage that before then was not widely publicized—and the Madison school district complied. Although the Urban League primarily focuses on job training, most publicly Caire has stormed back into his hometown with the idea that he will open a charter school, Madison Preparatory Academy. Students will dress sharply in red blazers and pressed whites. It will be a challenging International Baccalaureate curriculum, and catering to underserved and often under-achieving minorities students.

Nationally known artist Lorna Jordan will be designing an eco-art layer that will be incorporated into the infrastructure of Madison’s Central Park. Ms. Jordan presented a lecture about her past projects at the Goodman Community Center on on May 17th. Ms. Jordan is a renowned eco-artist best known for Waterworks Gardens, an environmental art project at the Water Reclamation Plant in Renton, Washington. We envision using Ms. Jordan’s talents to celebrate Central Park’s green infrastructure; from sculptural stormwater management systems, to pathways, and everything in between.
David Sweet works on a project in Portland called Solarize Portland, which works with neighborhood associations to develop a program to increase adoption of solar electric systems through bulk purchasing. The City of Madison recently received funding from the US DOE to promote solar energy and will be investigating whether a similar program would work here in Madison. Mr. Sweet spoke in Madison on May 13th.
Coleen Higgins is a former Senior Official of the IMO; the United Nations Specialized Agency for global shipping and international maritime matters. From 1992-2000, Attorney Higgins held the post of Legal Officer, Legal Affairs and External Relations Division, at the International Maritime Organization -IMO- (United Nations) in London, England, U.K.Higgins has participated in International Water Law conferences in Italy and Mexico. She has also participated in numerous international IMO (U.N.) Diplomatic Treaty Making Conferencesin London, England; and in the United Nations Congress on Public International Law held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

City Alcohol Policy Coordinator Katherine Plominski presents this session aimed at preventing alcohol related violence as it relates specifically to licensed establishments. The training includes topics including but not limited to problematic patrons, large-scale disturbances, capacity, over-serving, and false identification. As part of the training, the presentation will make reference to Madison City Ordinances, Wisconsin State Law, and case law specific to these topics.

Sisters Mary Kay Baum, Chris Baum VanRyzin and Rosann Baum Milius know first-hand the effects dementia can have on individuals and families. These three sisters are battling early onset Alzheimer’s. Mary Kay, a longtime Madison activist, will describe how it is estimated that one in three families in WI are now affected by a dementia, and discuss that women experience a higher prevalence of Alzheimer's disease than men. She'll concentrate on ways to prevent or reduce the symptoms of a dementia like Alzheimer's, and explain what keeps her going and so hopeful.

Randal O’Toole is the author of “Gridlock: Why We’re Stuck in Traffic and What to Do About It,” a book that argues against high-speed trains and urban rail transit lines in favor of “...improving methods of transportation that will increase everyone’s mobility and pay for themselves, whether it’s cars, buses, planes or trains.”

In mid-February, Google announced plans to bring ultra-high speed fiber networks to residential homes in trial locations around the country. More information on Google Fiber is available here. The City will submit an application to Google by March 26 and needs the community’s help to make our application stand out in this highly competitive process. This meeting is a major step in the process of enlisting the community’s help.

During the period 2002-2007, the county black infant mortality rate declined from 19.4 (1990-2001) to 6.4 deaths per 1000 live births, eliminating the black-white infant mortality gap. However, there are other risk factors affecting birth outcomes where disparities still exist between blacks and whites that should not be ignored.
This short documentary explores some of the factors that may have an influence on positive birth outcomes, was produced to inform the public and spur conversations that will generate further discussion.

Madison City Channel cameras captured this discussion by Passiv Haus Architect Meinhard Hansen. Meinhard Hansen is from Madison’s sister city of Freiburg, Germany, and has had an impact in the world of sustainable design. The concept of Passiv Haus design has been in Europe for a while, and with the Northeast Neighborhoods plan adopted, Madison may see this kind of construction. As this area develops, Madison can expect to see Passiv Haus design proposals or proposals that incorporate many of their simple, but effective, concepts.
