so this show was already finished days ago when my computer break down all of a sudden and the recordings were gone into the universe. after fixing it, i did it all new again, with new inspirations, changin it into a pure soulpatrol selection with even more love in there. thats what we need - now here you go, a bit of a "what the world needs now" - happy easter 2013 edition.
a selection out of the depths of the soulsearching shelves. plus a couple of this years tunes, linked into the lovers mix. some quite obvious ones in there, some i do play only once every 10 years on radio. like "life's opera" by marvin gaye. what an opus ! and of course we say happy 71st to the goddess, aretha. also leon thomas sounds so good again alongside the louis hayes group. it's spring, baby.

soulsearching international is back. thanks for your patience and positive feedback throughout the last months, comin in from all around the globe. so while you were sleeping last night, the music did the talking in the soulsearching studio ffm. snow outside, warm positive vibes inside. as you can imagine - loads of great stuff to play, 2013 sounds like a wonderful year of music already, comin in from all corners, out of melbourne with the band to watch called hiatus kaiyote whose singer and leader nai palm will be performing in london this weekend at a certain award show - out of new york with josé james, whose brilliant blue note album drops as we speak, another soulsearching favourite, the soul lady no.1 returns in a true preachermans daughter style, london is represented with the most beautiful folk sound around right now, torn sail and b.j. smith, the new sound of natural self, mopmop out of berlin/bologna ... and a little bar rhumba flashback moment when a dj called james lavelle dropped, premiered all tunes of an album which got very important throughout the nineties and beyond on this heavy sound system. memories. plus another earwig mixtape treatment par excellence...been worth all the wait again - a little "what the world needs now" flavour for you. watch out for my edition out there soon.
ps: words from earwig about his slow soul flow . . . This "Slow Soul Flow" mix by Earwig of the Shoes edit crew and Plimsoll Records was made by taking many of his favorite soul tracks into Ableton Live. Then each and every track was chopped up into just a handful of bars and looped up, dubbed and filtered into a seamless mix. Similar to the Shoes "Eccentric Beats and Breaks" release for the Numero Group, this mix may contain some hints of the upcoming "Eccentric Beats and Breaks Vol 3". R.I.P. Terry Callier - a tribute.
The man who combined Jazz, Soul & Folk like no other has left us last Sunday 28th October 2012 in his hometown Chicago. Please have a listen to my personal selection of songs by Mr Callier, so many good & positive memories when goin through my collection, but as time is limited some may be missed. He should be mentioned alongside Curtis, Marvin, Leon Thomas and Bill Withers, up here with the greatest, but most important - a man of peace & love through music. first love then revolution or rather revolution through and with love. Thanks so much for blessing us with your music . . . we're goin miss our candyman.

thanks for your patience once again, now here it is, the next soulsearching installment for you. saying goodbye to Donna Summer, the last Disco Queen passed away and rests in peace now. such an amazing voice, and "Bad Girls" is an almost forgotten disco jam in my box, used to play this out so many times, now back in the box. As well as some killer grooves by the Bee Gees, Robin Gibb, R.I.P. ! All about music and a certain feeling, not genres, nor narrow minds. Chuck Brown gave us the Go-Go early 80s, we were blowing our whistles at the G.I. parties here in Frankfurt. R.I.P. - strange times indeed, but the music will live on....

2011 has been a strong year full of musical discoveries. be it in jazz, crossover electronic goes band stuff and also very good pop music came along. all artists, keep on delivering - and we'll keep spreading then.
and just when you think all is being delivered another strong album arrives - real hip hop by the roots. go and get the album, this is one for rap and hip hop history. also check for more bass heavy remix action by new mysterious producer team close. massive remix for scuba this time, little dragon next time. and song of the year? lana del rey is definately up there, about time to give you the strong joy orbison remix. plus a very beautiful winter flower which grew already in summer this year and a stunning remix by burnt friedman, doin the shangaan shake. kickin off with another project:mooncircle gem btw . . . this label is getting better and better. and finishing my little warm up set for the spiritual drums session with a great piano player from armenia. highly recommended album !
this is not a 2011 rewind though. just another spontaneous soulsearching excursion.

"Just a quick note regarding this mix. I was on my way to a festival this summer and at the train station I bought a Best of Fleetwood Mac CD. At some point on the transfer bus I encountered Worried Dreams which probably is the most intense song I ve ever heard. You know you could say my father died brokenhearted but lived the Blues before he died and I miss him sometimes and the Blues brings him a little bit closer again. This is for him." and another r.i.p. tribute mix had to be done, i said it before - i am not really lookin forward to doing these selections because that always means that a great artist has left the earth - fonce mizell died july 5th in california and left us with some of the most positive vibes in jazz and soul music. together with his brother larry mizell he brought the soul to jazzmusic and created a very own sound which has been highly influential ever since to many of the musicians played on this show week by week. the mizell trademark sound and productions added this special flavour to the outstanding music by the likes of donald byrd, rance allen group, bobbi humphrey, l.t.d. and of course johnny hammond to name but a few, who had the chance to work with with fonce mizell and get that magic touch within their albums. here is a little selection of tunes that i love and which always bring a smile to my face and ears. thanks a lot for this, mr. mizell and your music and visions were made for heaven anyway . . . goodbye and rest in peace.

GP doin the Havana Cultura thing in Frankfurt, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 killer live show (words & music special soon come) and probably the best gig i have seen so far by Fat Freddys Drop here in the wonderful Capitol venue. Music, band, audience melting into one from the first note of Midnight Marauders to Wandering Eye singin along . . . outstanding magical vibes. Will be seeing them again in Brussels Ancienne Theatre on Tuesday 5th July after a long weekend break with the family. Go and get your tickets!
All very inspiring as the music does not stop comin in from all over the place, new names on the scene like Indigo Music (thanks Nailah for the post) and Tanya Auclair out of London, more well known guys like Rainer Trueby and Danilo Plessow with a deep jam, SBTRKTs album gettin better with each listen, Quantic delivering a killer remix and dub for Owiney Sigoma, afrojazz by Les Freres Smith out of Paris, plus heavy intense jazz moments by Matthew Halsall, Mongo Santamaria and Pharaoh Sanders firing quartet version of his classic and timeless tune... phew.....!

A guy called Konrad Kuhn out of Stuttgart sent me his brilliant "Astral Travellin" mix out of nowhere and so gave the inspiration for this show. His mix is not only musicwise filled with some of the finest moments in music but also put together by using original words taken from Apollo 11 documentary records including comments by Wernher von Braun, Dr. Herbert Pichler & Chet Huntley. . . . so i was just about to go on with this kind of 2010 rewind selection - not really a chart thing as i am not so much into this - as a mix came floating in spontaneously. out of the UK, by a man, who knows his music, his deep house music. checking soundcloud.com before hitting the record button i came across a very fine mix called "sounds i feel" by "bbb-1", namely ben brophy who spread the word about this show in a very nice way over the last two years or so. wanted to give him a shout out anyway in the show but then asked if he could edit his 90 minutes mix on soundcloud.com/bbb-1 for soulsearching....that's what he did and there you go: into the deep volume 2 as you may call it, finest deep house excursions, classics put together in an everflowing mix. thanks a lot , mr. brophy and see you in 2011 on a boat in croatia probably . . .

Johannes Albert produces housemusic for labels like Stupendous, Deeper Shades and is now one of the main artists on the sublime WHITE 12inch label out of Berlin. His mix is a soulful take on the full spectrum of what they call housemusic. Thanks a lot , Johannes!

Back in. 13 years of soulsearching anniversary starting right here. From deep Jazz to DEEP housemusic. ND Baumecker with his "Prescription Every Night" mix from 1997, when Radio X in Frankfurt started and i hosted the DJ nights alongside the INFRACom! crew.
This mix is not only a 1st class testimony how deep house should be done with two turntables but has been high influential on my view at housemusic. Back in the Wild Pitch Club Frankfurt days ND was my favourite DJ on thursday night in a basement. The whole history of Playhouse & Co. started right there . . . House is a feeling. ND is living in Berlin now and does some great new stuff on Ostgut Ton plus takes care of bookings at the Panorama Bar. Danke, Andreas! I don't want to sound too oldschool but there are many DJs today who think they play deephouse but should have a listen here. And then think again.
On another note i had such a great time the last two weeks, which started with the soulsearching summer session 2010 on the last hot summerday & night this year, then off to see and meet Fat Freddys Drop twice, Cologne Live Music Hall indoor and Chiemsee Reggae Festival outdoor, both unforgettable performances, the NZ guys are getting better and better! Abbey Lincoln died a few days after her 80s birthday in Manhattan August 14th 2010. Rest in paradise, rest in peace. A little tribute mix with a couple of tunes that i played 3 years ago when Max Roach, her longtime husband, passed away, taken from the highly important "Freedom Suite" album plus two songs off the beautiful "Abbey Is Blue" longplayer . . . thanks Lady Lincoln!

slow 'n ' easy, back in the early eighties days and nights i spent a whole lotta time listening to AFN Radioshows and hangin out in GI clubs like Funkadelic in Frankfurt. from there i started to take my first steps on air via a little pirate station....(to be continued) Now this particular era is being picked up by the GI Disco crew Berlin most recently, so Frankfurt says hi out of the soulsearching studios with part one of the Slow Jams, soulpatrol DJ box history and inspiration. A full on GI Disco special to come later this year....

On Monday April 19th, 2010 one of the few great voices of HipHop, Rap & Jazz passed away. A true and huge inspiration for what i am doing, the more i think about it.
R.I.P. Keith Elam aka GURU. He blessed us with non commercial attitude when HipHop stood on the corner between underground and mainstream and almost everyone else was goin for the Bling Bling shit and the top of the pops - he stayed true to himself. Besides ATCQ and the whole Dilla soulaquarian crew Guru, Gang Starr and Jazzmatazz are still our kind of hiphop.

sometimes these great albums just arrive in the postbox without any hype before and around it. so one can listen without any superhyped statements in the head - now the album "Speak" by Michael Olatuja is one of those brilliant works, havin played alongside Stevie, Chaka et al. on bass he now took his time to record with fantastic artists like Eska, Lynden David Hall (R.I.P.) Roachford, Terri Walker, TY and more an album full of soul and jazz and all that. don't call it "nu" anything, its music felt and played without any trend in mind i guess. thats why it is so unique. and so is labelmate Gretchen Parlatos version of Herbies "Butterfly" on her second full length. simply wonderful. both released or goin to be releases through the class Obliq Sounds label. check the full treat, get a CD! also featured in this show the man out of the UK who is the talk of town now and will definately be in years to come, when speaking about his Ensemble. here with his original contender for tune of the year and a remix action for an outstanding project by Bei Bei and Shawn Lee. DSL laidback for Boozoo Bajou, BIG remix! Isaac Hayes, the don of coverversions and his killer sexy 14 minutes take on Eugene McDaniels "Feel Like Makin Love" and a bit of edit beat action by Miles Bonny who just delivered a cool performance at the LAZY. season closing last saturday...thats it for this weeks tunes out of the MR box . . . off to CUBA!

another week is rushing by.....last thursday josé james with his fantastic trio playin a very pleasant outstanding late night show clubgig here in frankfurt, then bruce springsteen the next day with 40000 singin along his songs, from "jungleland" to "hungry heart" - 3 plus hours on stage, although he's 59 now - big respect for this and for keepin the faith, short sleep and off to marseille by plane , then with 40 degrees in the shade and a convertible where i could not manage to close the rooftop while being 4 hrs in steady traffic jam, to sete , worldwide festival. all worth it, its where it's at. best festival for the music i love. pure class and loads of nice people i met and saw again. big up gilles and ivan, boris, frank and the whole freshly cut crew for putting this on and caring about everything with real professionalism. big up also: earl zinger (yeahhh! best mc i know - thanks for supporting my set as well !), eddy and yannah, dj suv, jonathan rudnick, fulgeance (great set), alex barck (magic set), lefto (gimme this ultrarave tune ... ) jazzamar (champagne anyone?), shuya okino (best dressed man of the festival , wearing the supernice and supercool bathing suit of his father all day, playing fantastic music), d.o.p. (now thats twisted housemusic !), bpm, simbad (yes, thriller just close to midnight), and eddy once again for slipping "club tropicana" in my hands . . . festivals and dj gigs in general are about moments like this! more about the ww festival and the garden zadar next week when i have then sorted out all recordings and stuff for a proper rundown...and once again, a few hours sleep now and then off to the garden 2009. boat, club, main stage. got your tickets? get on board.
this weeks show with a bit of that nice summervibe goin on musically at the moment plus a rather excellent radio mix selection by the one and only pépé bradock. a true master of sounds and housemusic these days. check his remix collection double cd on bbe called "confiote de bits" which has all of them on there. . well , not all, because everything he touches, glimmers golden afterwards. like his new 12inch on atavisme. merci tres bien , pepe and hope to be meeting you soon !

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . so what can i say ? he made the soundtrack of my youth and beyond, his tunes were included in my first pirate radioshows way back when, i danced to his music in G.I. clubs beginning of the 80s, played his tunes a 1000 times when i began DJing at my friends parties and still spin the big ones for me, . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . so it took some couple of days time to realize what happened after i've got this message online while checking mails last thursday night after my frankfurt show . it said "Michael Jackson R.I.P. (10 minutes ago" and came from king britt out of philly. first i could not believe it. 50 years is quite young. but then again, life somehow has been a struggle for him as well, searching for his lost childhood all the time. one of the first memories which came to my mind was that night in august 1977 when i had just returned from a football match with my brother & father and my mum stood in front of the TV and tears were floating and floating. on that night Elvis Presley died . . . so as music has always been a part of our life at home and still is - my two girls do like the music by MJ, Stevie, Aretha, .. . . - its this feeling of having lost someone who you did not even know personally. but Michael Jackson expressed himself through his music. he defined himself this way. and with his music he had and still has a major impact on all kinds of soulmusic which goes pop then. in addition to this he was the last big entertainer of the world. maybe exactly this made him go away, facing his revival concerts in London which should have happened this july. . . anyway, i don't want to talk too much about it - as i have played "Off The Wall" alongside many other tunes at out LAZY. party last saturday night i realized what Michael Jacksons music means to me. maybe i would not even be a DJ or do radioshows now. . . i don't really know, but what i know is that i am and will be a big fan of his music which stays here forever. my selection for this show includes some of my favourite tunes, there is plenty more of course. . .

talked with gilles p about his recent visit to cuba in the afternoon - he 's been there to produce a record with the young jazz piano wizard roberto fonseca , doin versions of "chekere son", "rofo rofo fight", "think twice" and new songs and tunes which sounded heavy at the club at night although unmixed ! the havana cultura double cd will be coming out in september / october and closer to this i will give you the interview i did about it . . . and of course the music which i am now not allowed to play - makes sense because the mastered versions will be tearing it down then. a nuyorican soul for 2009 ! watch this space.....
so in the show a little mixup selection including snap! ...... erm , snap!? yes, you read it. having whitnessed the promo parties where they played the whole first album (with "the power" on it) at an certain omen club and plastik in frankfurt way back when i could not believe my ears when hearing this (unofficial ?) remake of the '93 tune "exterminate" by two guys out of denmark. will stay in the box all summer long...brandnew and really good sounding music out of new zealand courtesy of the jewel school radio crew also in the show as well as 4hero who had to give up trying to get to sofia on their way by car from the uk . . . and drove back as the croatians refused to let them in with only a photocopy of their passports in their hands....bring the original next time, guys. we missed you at the festival !
second hour by request my little late night mix as recorded at the springnine festival a few weeks ago. . . just 50 minutes but i had fun doin this, including many tunes that i ahve played out the first time there. somehow got deep into it and had to stop because the party was over . . . good lineup in the wrong place. anyway. hope you like it.

so many good more or less unknown beat producers around, so i thought i give you a few bits & pieces on the abstract tip besides introducing new albums by little dragon, fat freddys drop, ian simmonds, and... lee fields & the expressions! with all this soul & funk revival goin on since a while now this record proves 100% why it needs a real voice from back in the days and a great band to reach oit for your souls. favourite album of my whole family at the moment. and i am diggin the new look track on the new brownswood bubblers 4 - "everything" reminds me of early 90s underground soul as well as the minimal but funky and soulful touch of a band called taxi, remember? and in the end it's disco music, but without a beat. sublime.
a great jazz piano trio moment full of energy taken from the lp "the junior mance touch" which i have found recently in a very good record shop in hamburg. music like this is the reason why i still love to go record shopping. vinyl that is ! and then a little mix selection for the feel good factor this summer 2009, also strictly vinyl. in the box for those festivals to come....lookin very much forward to this saturday - playing the aftershow party of a great new festival in sofia, bulgaria - check www.parklivefest.com for the full line-up.

Great remix package for one of the most underrated albums of last year: Part-Time Heroes "Meanwhile" remixed, shouts and congrats to Dom Servini celebrating 10 years of Wah Wah 45s, keep them comin, sir! Back from Graz / Springnine Festival - had the pleasure to see / hear Tosca live for the first time , blown away by sound, music, lights, venue (a traditional oldschool concert hall) and the visuals - go and see them live early June when they are on stage in churches and other special places. Album is called "No Hassle" and this is what its all about. Nice.
Great mix by the one and only Paul Murphy, here he is in his own words: "Greetings again from Budapest, today its sunny so its yet again the New Barcelona! Back in the night in the day I used to play a lot of what were then seen as straight ahead Jazz records. Before the heady 1990's days of Acid Jazz, before the Jazz Not Jazz trips, and well before the Nu Jazz times too. I usually played in dive bars below seedy hotels, old Victorian pubs still full of Withnail and I types, South American restaurants full of extras from Scarface and ex-strip bars. All very downbeat and sordid. And, amazingly, people used to come down to these places and dance their asses off. Heady times! What goes around, comes around, happily and now on my travels I'm playing these old sounds again. And people are still digging them."
