Sometimes getting advice from others can be tricky, especially if the advice is not what the other wanted to hear, or the information is not delivered by an expert. Despite Scotty Ray’s claims of match-making abilities, giving advise to others is a whole different thing. Regardless, one of our listeners have emailed wanting advise on whether someone should let an ex-spouse store stuff at their house. This will definitely be interesting advise. Back in the day it was exciting to hear those famous words “you got mail.” Dating was basically old school even when you could get a message through the computer. Now dating can be done directly through an app on your computer. On-line dating is a billion dollar business with millions of people seeking that perfect date and perfect mate. Unfortunately for thousands, their on-line date was anything but perfect. Yes, it did seem that way in the beginning. For some, it was almost too good to be true. And that’s exactly what it was. To good to be true.
Too many of our youths are taking their own life. The mystery is why? Perhaps it’s depression, the loss of something significant and meaningful to them, or maybe it’s just because life has been painted in their minds to be perfect. After all isn’t that what we portray on social media? Posting that perfect photo of that perfect trip, party, or event. But is that too much pressure to be perfect in an imperfect world?
Ready for the super bowl? Are you having a super bowl party with friends, or are you lucky enough to be watching it in person? If lucky enough to get to go to the game and watch in person even the nose bleed seats are extremely expensive. The super bowl is one of the most watched events on television. Just to air a 30 second ad can be as much as 6 million dollars. Every thing about the super bowl is expensive. But then again it’s the SUPER bowl.
Almost 50 percent of marriages in the US will end in divorce or separation. That’s not very good odds. Secondly, a large portion of those divorces are not amicable ones. Some people will go to extreme measures to make sure the other party is damaged financially, emotionally, or even physically. And that doesn’t even begin to describe the hurt and pain of children of parents going through a divorce.
How many times have you had to get on to your kids for fighting? Most siblings grow up to have close, loving relationships. But some have fallouts due to a conflict over parenting differences, beliefs, political views, how to care for an elderly parent, or how to handle a family estate. Some never recover from this and become bitter enemies. Even famous people have siblings they are at war with. Are there things that siblings can do to eventually mend fences and repair a damaged relationship? We can only hope.
Ever encountered a cougar before? Not the one that walks on four legs but one that walks on two. Yes, a female that is interested in meeting, dating, and possibly marrying a much younger man. By definition a cougar is one that is in pursuit or interested in a male at least ten years younger. And interesting enough some men would be interested in dating a cougar. Ever seen a movie where family members gather to hear the reading of a will, only to go at it because somebody else got that expensive ring, plot of land, or family money? This happens in real life, with ugly disputes over a 50 dollar broken down piece of furniture that belonged to grandma Ethel. Sometimes that underlying current between family members becomes a tidal wave with just a little nudge like a dispute over who gets what when a loved one dies. No more civil conversations or pleasantries when gathered at Thanksgiving. No, it’s a brawl with a capital B.
Sometimes your gut tells you to walk away from that attractive purchase, especially when it’s something that will stretch the budget and is really not needed. But temptation gets the best of us and we purchase that boat, car, expensive electronic equipment or house only to wish later we hadn’t. Everyone has been there. Sometimes it’s hard to save that money for a raining day when we see that shiny toy. Later we realize we didn’t need it, no longer use it, it never worked as intended, or really couldn’t afford it. That’s when we know we have buyers remorse.
Bullying, while around for centuries, is having a bigger and bigger impact on our youth. Especially since cyber bullying is on the rise. Millions of Americans, including adults, fall victim to this every year. But there are many forms of bullying and unfortunately we know people that are bullies. While children some bullies mature into caring and compassionate adults, but many continue the cycle of bullying into their adult years. Are you or a love one being bullied?

Remember the Kodak or Polaroid camera? What about the land line or a party line? Waiting on that phone call from a rotary phone at the house that may or may come. Or the answer machine that you checked immediately when you got back to the house. Or those fall evenings when you had to manually roll down the windows in the car to get that cool breeze. Do you miss those days or even know what those items were?
Years ago Bill Cosby was a household name. He was either on a commercial promoting Jello or he was on your TV set as the all American dad. Boy have times changed. Many women alleged that they were raped at the hands of the all American dad. Bill Cosby even spent time in prison after being convicted. But now he is out, at home, due to a technicality. Is that justice? Was he wrongly convicted? Do people still see him as the role model he was in years past? Does he deserve a second chance, after his claim of rehabilitation?
Why do so many parents act so hostile at their children’s sporting events? Isn’t sports supposed to be fun? What happened to just having fun? Just being kids? What lessons do kids learn when their own parents yell, scream, and even fight each other during a ballgame? What makes parents so angry? When did sports become so important for parents, and less fun for kids? Perhaps parents could take lessons from their own children and focus their energy in making sure sports are about friendships, sportsmanship, and good ole fashion fun.
Are you dating a loser? Everyone dreams of meeting that wonderful mate. Unfortunately some people end up with someone that’s more work than what they expected, or not quite the mate they had hoped. But, are there warning signs to help identify a loser? You bet!
Do you believe that men and women are created equal? Not in terms of intelligence but physically? Meaning does the average man have more strength and muscle mass than the average female? And what if that man now identifies as a female? Should they be able to compete in female sports? Is that fair? After all, females are now competing in sports that ten years ago were 100% male participants. Every person has the right to identify as they see fit, but what happens when those around them are uncomfortable?
Ever had a time where you received too much money from your local cashier or fast food drive through? Hopefully you returned the money. Believe it or not people have had millions deposited in their account that didn’t belong to them, or was not a transaction they initiated. As crazy as that sounds it does happen. Although tempting, the money is not theirs to spend. That didn’t stop some from trying.
Can you tell when someone is telling you the truth or not? Sometimes it is so easy. The stories are so unbelievable, but other times it’s not so easy. And we want to believe the person is being truthful, especially if it is someone near and dear to us. If only there were ways to indicate deceit. Well, there are. Ever heard someone say they think two women in the same room, office, or party are about to have a cat fight? Most people understand that does not mean two cats. That literally means two, or more, women are going at it with each other. If you have not witnessed this it can get ugly quick. Women fighting can be a lot more brutal than men fighting. And women don’t walk away and get over it, like most men do. Some say women are protecting their possessions, the things and the people they cherish. Others think it’s women’s hormones and the inability to be rational and calm in sticky situations. Regardless, some just want to grab a cold drink and watch it go down.

It can be as simple as leaving the toilet seat up, or perhaps interrupting someone when talking. People can just get on your last nerve. It’s hard to admit that more and more Americans have exotic animals, such as tigers, lions, snakes, birds, monkeys, and whatever else they can get their hands on as pets. But one has to ask why? How can anybody think that having a wild animal as a pet is normal, much less safe, or even fair to the animal? Yet every year we hear crazy but sad stories of wild animals, labeled family pets, that has attacked and sometimes killed their caretakers. Why do so many people have fascinations with these animals and think they must possess one? And this fascination extends beyond the home. Every year someone feels the need to go beyond the normal visit to the zoo, tempt fate, and get in the cages with these animals. Crazy!
Stimulus checks and unemployment sure did help millions of Americans that found themselves out of work. But for other Americans it meant making more money to stay at home than return to work. Is that how the money was intended? Who can say for sure, but now we find we have a shortage of workers, and as a result, many businesses have closed their doors. Should we have seen that coming? Can we get workers to return to work? How many incentives must we provide, and will that be enough?
Ever notice all it takes is an indication from the weatherman that bad weather is approaching and suddenly there is a run on the grocery store? No bread, milk, or eggs in sight. Shelves are deserted. Or what about during the pandemic? Have trouble buying toilet paper, or have you stocked piled enough to last several years? People who purchase during times like this are called panic buyers? Does that sound like you?
It is estimated that 11,500 - 20,000 Americans are incarcerated that are most probably innocent. Of those, most are black, and very few are female. But one female who’s innocence has always come into question is Mary Surratt, the alleged conspirator to assassinate President Lincoln. She was never afforded access to counsel to truly defend her charges. As a result, she was found guilty and hung. Back then the thought of hanging a women was unheard of. Many allege she was guilty as charged, but others believe she was set up. What do you think? Listen in as we discuss this and you decide. Guilty or not?
Another Mother’s Day in the books. What would we do without our mamas? How can we ever thank them enough for all they have done, and continue to do? Most of us celebrate our moms with popular gifts such as flowers, lunch or dinner at mom’s favorite restaurant, or just letting mom have some quiet time without the kids. How many times do you see in person, look at photos, or watch movies, of the Statue of Liberty? Do you instantly get a sense of pride? Or do you think of freedom when you see the powerful features of her face, crown, or torch? Most Americans do, but for some small percentage, they think the statue represents something a lot more sinister.
Most pet owners can’t imagine losing their beloved pet. After all, they are part of the family. They give us unconditional love. The least we can do is make sure their resting place is one that shows just how much they meant to us. Believe it or not there are actual pet cemeteries, and some, like one in Los Angeles, CA, actually house some of the most famous pets, like Tawny, the MGM lion, or Pete from “The Little Rascals.” However, the animal that has the biggest tombstone, is probably not the most known animal. It is the final resting place for a cat named Room 8.
If you have spent anytime in the south, especially the rural south, you understand the importance of funeral etiquette. For as long as anybody can remember the last act of kindness you can show someone, even in death, is to honor them by pulling off the shoulder of the road, or to take your hat off, slightly bend your head, as the funeral procession passes by. This still occurs today in small towns, but in larger more metropolitan areas, that ritual of respect, rarely occurs.
Summer is almost here. That means warm weather, outdoor activities, cookouts, and cool water holes. And believe me, some of these water holes are homemade, and creative at that. All you need is something to use as a make-shift pool and a whole lot of water. Then it’s time to put on the suit, invite some friends, and have a gathering. Sure, some people have a custom-built pool, but others have to use their ingenuity, used items, a tarp, and a water hose. Some of these homemade pools go from genius and impressive to downright hilarious.
Who does not love a bargain, especially one at a garage or yard sale? Even a secondhand item can be just the item that you are looking for. Maybe you are an experienced shopper and can spot a gem, or a unique item that might, just might, be worth a lot more than you paid. Or perhaps you have considered having a yard sale to earn some extra cash, while getting rid of items that you no longer need or use. But beware, if you are doing some needed spring cleaning and think that it would be a great idea to sale a few items, understand that dealing with customers might be the hardest part of it all. Sometimes the best thing to do is just donate those unwanted items and keep your sanity in check. There is nothing quite thrilling as purchasing a lottery ticket or two, just in the hopes that you will be the lucky one. Perhaps it’s the thrill of the possibility that one day your life could change forever. For millions of us that dream will remain a dream. But for those that beat the impossible odds and do win, the change can be overwhelming, and not always for the better. Overnight wealth, not properly managed from the beginning, can get ugly quick, and even millions of dollars can be spent before you know it. Let’s face it, you win millions and your distant family members that you have never met before come calling for their share. And it doesn’t end there. It can be a harsh reality, just when you thought winning was going to be so much fun and provide so much joy. Some even wish after winning millions they had never purchased that lottery ticket, and the life they had before winning, was the life they had now.
It happens so quick. Suddenly the house seems smaller. The garage can no longer house the cars. We suddenly find ourselves running out of room. The four-bedroom house only has two functioning bedrooms. The rest of the bedrooms contain stuff. So, what do we do? We purchase a storage shed to put more stuff in it. Sounds crazy but many Americans do just that. Storage facilities are a booming business. As consumers we always feel the need to purchase more items. But sooner or later it is time to get rid of those unwanted items. Some people, however, can’t imagine parting with the simplest of things. It could be a broken dish, a dilapidated sofa, or even as small and simple as a toothbrush. It truly is a disorder that affects millions of people. It’s called hoarding.
The phone rings and you answer. The person on the other end has a wonderful deal for you that you will not want to pass up. It’s too good to be true. That’s just it, it is too good to be true. It is a scam. One of a million scams that people all over the world are trying to pull. Perhaps it’s a person that has fell on bad luck, or it’s additional insurance you don’t need, or maybe it’s a problem with your computer. Whatever it is, you don’t need it. Scammers are pesky individuals that prey on the lonely, or the unsuspecting. Just when one scam is uncovered, another appears. When does it end? Have you been a victim of a scam? If not, count yourself as lucky.

You know that a Sunday afternoon was spent on the front porch with family and friends drinking lemonade and catching up on the activities that occurred during the week. It was just simple, nothing fancy. Back then you had one phone and there was no such thing as call waiting, voicemail, or caller id. No video games, no Amazon, and no telemedicine. Today we have a rover, Perseverance, that roams on planet Mars. Can you believe that? More advances than ever in space, technology, and medicine, and yet mental health issues are increasing at a staggering rate with our youth. So, is life better now?
Do you believe in reincarnation? Millions of people do. Some even have fascinating stories and facts about people that have passed that only one with intimate knowledge would know. And what if the person that knew these facts was a child? Many people even claim to have been reincarnated, even famous people. Probably one of the best known is Shirley MacLaine. Think reincarnation is baloney? Listen to several stories and you be the judge.
What happened to having cake and a few neighborhood friends over to celebrate your child’s birthday? It seemed like just a few years ago making a homemade birthday cake, perhaps splurging for a few balloons, birthday paper plates and napkins, and getting the neighborhood kids to stop by was just enough for a great birthday celebration for your child. You know, nothing fancy. Just simple. Not anymore. No, today you have to make sure you have the best venue, theme, fancy cake, happies for all attendees, and decorations to boot. It is no longer a simple gathering. Some parents even hire party planners for Junior’s third birthday, even though Junior is likely to never remember it. It is for show? We don’t know, you be the judge. All we know is that it isn’t like it used to be. The average cost of a birthday party is around $400 - $500 dollars, and that’s just getting started.
Why do us southerners wish for snow every year, only to be disappointed? We get teased every year, and every year we get disappointed. Yes, it snows in the south, but in the deep south it’s a rare treat. And when there is even the slightest forecast of snow every abled-body person is at the local grocery stocking up enough food to last a month. You know just in case the weatherman might be wrong and it’s actually going to be a blizzard instead of the forecasted dusting. And lord help us when it does actually drop an inch or two of snow because we don’t know how to drive. Just take a quick drive after a dusting of snow and it’s evident from all the cars abandon on the side of the road. But we honestly can’t help it. So yes, when it does actually snow, we go a little crazy. We buy too much, build one too many snowmen, rig up one too many homemade sleds, and get a little on the careless side. Even if only a snowflake or two, the redneck in each of us does rejoice.
What is our fascination with Bigfoot, and if it is real, why has it eluded us year after year? There have been Bigfoot sightings in every single state, with the exception of Hawaii. Bigfoot is simply big business. There are TV shows, festivals, tourism, and merchandise all centered around the mysterious Bigfoot. Even an Oklahoman State Representative wants to get in on the tourism dollar by creating a bill that would allow hunting Bigfoot. Do you think Bigfoot is real? Are you a believer? If so, get your guns ready. Because if this bill actually passes you may have your opportunity to bag the big one.
Why does it take a lifetime to build trust and a second to destroy it? When it comes to elected officials, loved ones, co-workers, and religious leaders our trust has waned over the years. More and more Americans distrust than ever before. Even the media has lost the trust of some of their most loyal viewers. Trust is the fabric of every healthy relationship and without it we begin to question everything and everybody, and no good can come from that.
Unfortunately, everyone gets sick. It’s that time of year when we all battle the common cold, flu, and yes, COVID-19. The difference is how we manage through our sickness, how women deal with sickness versus men. If you have a significant other, you know what we are talking about. Why do men lay around moaning all day when they get a cold, but a woman still manages to cook a meal, wash a load of clothes and help the kids do homework? Well there may be a scientific explanation if you can believe that. It’s called Man Flu.
How many times has someone done a good deed for you, a member of your family, or a friend? It was nice wasn’t it? Perhaps a church member brought over soup for someone sick, or food for a family that has just had to bury a loved one, or maybe just cut the grass for someone that is overseas. Good deeds go on all the time. Those that perform the acts of kindness do it because it is the right thing to do. They expect nothing in return. Do you ever pay that act of kindness forward? We will explore several stories of paying it forward. You know it’s a funny thing, the act is from the heart, and yet that is exactly what it touches. But today that’s a different story. More and more people are rethinking the importance of having survival kits, extra water and even more ammunition. Pandemics have a way of making people rethink survival. And when it comes to survival how many people actually have a survival plan, or have skills to live on the land? Most people, whether they will admit it or not, are superstitious to some degree. Some more than others. For us Southerners, we believe we are cursed if we do not live by our superstitions, even as ridiculous as they may be. Why? Because it’s all we know. It’s what’s been passed down from generation to generation, some without question. And yes, superstitions are not just limited to the south. Superstitions exist in every country, some more superstitious than the United States. In this episode Scotty Ray and Terri explore the superstitions that exist in our culture and how our superstitions, some widely known, originated. An estimated 188 million adult Americans think this year will be the year for change, and will make New Year’s resolutions, but unfortunately fewer than 10% actually achieve their goal. Most will make the usual commitments to lose a few pounds, exercise more, or eat better. However, by mid-year, half have abandoned their resolutions. Perhaps it’s because we pick the wrong resolutions, make the wrong commitments. Maybe we need to reexamine our goals and commit to smaller things, like take more walks, are do something that benefits someone besides ourselves. Perhaps we should say a kind word to another or check in on a neighbor. Perhaps what is missing with our commitments is that while losing a few pounds may be an accomplishment, it does not change our heart. Perhaps it doesn’t even change the way we feel about ourselves. Perhaps it’s simpler than that. When we do things for others, we get more in return. And maybe, just maybe, we should start picking goals that change the heart.
Everyone tells a lie from time to time, but some tell more lies than truths. Statistics show the average person tells at least ten lies in the course of one week. The lies range from why we can’t get to work on time, how big our accomplishments are, where we were, to simply telling someone what they want to hear, rather than telling the truth. Some of the lies people tell others are unbelievable and downright hilarious, but that doesn’t stop them from doing it. Unfortunately, we are all guilty of telling a little white lie. Can you remember the last time you told one? Was it to help a friend feel better, or perhaps to cover your whereabouts, or to convince the boss why you rolled in ten minutes late? Sometimes greed can get the best of us, no matter the circumstance or the reason. Greed is not limited to big cities. No, greed can happen in small towns to unsuspecting citizens. In the 1890’s this happened in the small town of Scooba, Mississippi. Times were hard in the 1890’s and especially in the south. Most could only dream of a better life, a life that wasn’t such a struggle to make ends meet. A respected doctor in the community wanted that life, a better life, so he devised a plan that took advantage of the less fortunate, no one knowing the wiser.
This story is a detour from our topics of discussion about everyday life. This is a real story of how one trusted doctor shook a community by acquiring insurance policies on unsuspecting citizens, citizens that would have no means of acquiring a policy otherwise. These victims trusted the small-town doctor with their life, and for some, that’s exactly what he took.
We all know that Thanksgiving is a time for fellowship with friends and family. Part of that tradition is preparing the Thanksgiving meal, setting that wonderful table, and gathering with friends and family that may live close or far. It is always our hope the turkey comes out tender and juicy, cooked to perfection. The side dishes are delectable, the dessert is to die for, and the company is a delight. However, in the real world the turkey is sometimes over or under cooked, the company is less than desirable, and the home is a wreck. The goal for most is to get through the meal without incident. This perfectly describes a couple from Ohio when they discovered not only several suitcases with money and valuables inside, but also hidden rooms that neither had a clue even existed.
