For the season finale of Remote Art Talks we had a conversation with Cat Lamora, a Korean-Canadian paper artist based in Toronto who uses this fragile and temporary medium to create work at the crossroads of diaspora consciousness, memory, culture, and nostalgia.
We'll talk about the way Korean culture influences Cat's work, why they chose to use paper as a medium to create and we'll take a closer look at Cat's latest installation, We Bathe Here, which recreates the intimacy of Korean bath houses, a space in which people see each other's nakedness and vulnerabilities as something natural and ordinary and that connects the artist to childhood memories in Korea.

In what seems to be a conversation between old friends, Carla from Artifier meets photographic artist Danijela Gorley for the first time following months of Instagram DMs.
Originally from the former Yugoslavia, Gorley discusses her 20-year career as a photographer and the evolution of her work, shifting from a focus on self-identity and exploration of the self in her early career to focusing on the female and asking larger questions about beauty, the female experience and channeling intuition. She shares how she manifested recent personal challenges into a collaborative project with local florists exploring various aspects of transformation.
Danijela Gorley’s photographs create magical spaces that deal with issues of self and identity while analyzing the role of women in our society. Now based in Toronto, Gorley was a founding member of Montreal artist collective YPF, which exhibited locally and internationally. Her upcoming exhibition Flowers still bloom in wartime at The Lyceum Gallery is postponed until further notice.

By consciously tuning herself into the natural world, Toronto-based artist Johanna Reynolds creates dynamic abstractions using oil and acrylic paint. Reynolds’ work is known for elegant, contemplative layers interrupted by moody, gestural bursts of unexpected colour.
In this episode Johanna Reynolds talks to Carla, founder of Artifier, about how she first discovered her love for painting, where these abstracted landscapes come from and she even takes us on a little tour around her home studio as we dive into the collective experience of being in confinement and how this period could leave a long lasting effect in our lives for the better.

Renowned Canadian artist Alex McLeod chats with Tammy about the relationships between nature and technology, fashion and art, and how the physical and virtual realms sometimes intertwine. McLeod discusses the learning curve of expanding his practice from a decade of prints and video to include three-dimensional work, and shares his optimism about this strange time we’re in and the new, innovative art that can come out of it.
Alex McLeod is a Toronto-based artist that uses technology to create sanguin simulated landscapes and other artifacts of nature through animations, prints, and 3D sculptures. His print and video work is collected by several major corporate and government institutions, including Global Affairs Canada, and is represented by Division Gallery.

We had the pleasure of speaking with Raoul Olou, a multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto. His work focuses on home, belonging and archiving the mundane, and is characterized by bold brushstrokes that skillfully play with light and shadow. Olou describes his work as a visual diary of his recent move to Toronto and is currently fascinated with capturing the transition between day and night, a moment he describes as entre chien et loup.
Having only begun painting three years ago, Olou has already participated in major charity auctions including #ArtWithHeart to support HIV care and was awarded the Mayor’s Purchase Award at the 2019 Toronto Outdoor Art Fair.

Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist, art director and curator Lauren Pirie joined Tammy from Partial Gallery for a heartfelt conversation about art, artists and life in self-isolation.
Speaking from self-isolation in her 400 sq. ft. apartment, Pirie shared honest reflections on the challenges of creating while in confinement, moving her art studio into her living space, and her thoughts on how this strange period of time might impact the way we perceive and consume art in general.
Pirie also discusses how her practice has evolved from her signature delicate, intricate ink drawings to include large-scale murals and, more recently, installation. With recent large-scale installation pieces at Ontario Place’s Winter Light Exhibition and MOCA, the artist shares insights from her transition into this new medium.

Maya Skarzenski is an interdisciplinary artist fusing together painting, textiles, and photography. Her work explores the intersections between the abject and the beautiful.
Through the use of material exploration and by incorporating unusual process combinations, she dissolves the line between fine-art and craft. Painting and textile techniques allow Skarzenski to create bodily imagery that is sensual, fragile, playful, and ambiguous.

Shaheer Zazai is a Toronto-based Afghan-Canadian artist with a current studio practice both in painting and digital media. His practice focuses on exploring and attempting to investigate the development of cultural identity in the present geopolitical climate and diaspora.
Using Word docs as a medium, Shaheer creates intricate textile-like patterns that resemble Afghan carpets. In this episode we'll be talking about how this practice began, how his Afghan heritage informs his practice and the ways he is keeping motivated and inspired while we experience life in isolation.

Alison Postma graduated from the University of Guelph’s undergraduate studio art program in 2016 and is now based in Toronto. Her work has focused on themes of perception in dreams and ideas of the future from the past. Most recently her practice has focused on physically getting to know objects. Alison’s practice is always informed by the mundane and day-to-day, usually by materials encountered and stories overheard.

Hugo Laliberté is the co-founder of Ottomata Studio, an experiential design studio based in Montreal creating immersive installations that invite audiences to interact with sound and light.
We talked about what is #NewArtMedia, what it takes to produce an interactive installation and how to start a career in the industry.

Ottomata studio believes that most great things in life happen when we take action. We explore this idea in our work by creating collaborative immersive spaces and interactive installations that take place in the public space in which the human is at the center. In their projects, the public is invited to break the boundaries between spectator and actor and engage into deep and meaningful interactions in order to get back in the present moment.
