Specifically, we cover the first major outbreak of the disease in the United States in Philadelphia in 1793 and the broader history of yellow fever in the United States through the 1800s. This sets the stage for the story of Walter Reed and his discovery that yellow fever is transmitted by mosquitoes, which quickly led it it's eradication from Cuba and elsewhere in the world.

The individual states that make up the United States of America often choose state symbols that represent different facets of their agriculture, their traditions, their cuisine, and their people. In fact, most states have even dipped into the entomological world to choose insect symbols such as state insects, state butterflies, or state agricultural insects. In this episode, the Arthro-Pod gang parses through the mix of chosen insects and points out which ones are amazing and which ones could stand to be improved. Suffice to say, we try to get rid of all the honey bee picks. Howdy bug lovers! Scale insects are simultaneously fascinating and sort of uninteresting. They are notoriously immobile for much of their life, making them the insect of equivalent of couch potatoes. Hello bug lovers and welcome to a roach filled Valentine's edition of Artho-Pod! Jody and Jonathan meet up with Dr. Andrew Sutherland of University of California Extension. Andrew is an urban entomologist and an area IPM advisor for UC who serves the San Francisco area. As for today's topic, the Turkestan cockroach is an intriguing invasive species that is competing with other roaches, such as the oriental roach, for space. Due to a variety of factors, the Turkestan roach seems to be spreading and is also being noticed by people in the western US. All of that adds up to an interesting podcast episode filled with cockroach facts, thoughts on how the Turkestan roach is spreading, and possible management strategies.

Hello friends, and welcome back to Arthro-Pod! Today's episode is a look at a phenomenon many entomologists will encounter, even if they aren't ready to, known as delusory parasitosis. Also referred to as delusions of infestation and Ekbom's syndrome, this situation involves a person believing that their body and home are infested with some sort of biting or stinging pest, despite there being no evidence that is true. We're all predisposed to interpret certain signals as being caused by an insect or mite trying to crawl on us or bite us and unfortunately, sometimes this can further manifest as delusory parasitosis. Sufferers are often desperate for help and entomologists are often helpless to provide assistance. Today we wanted to outline some of the background of delusory parasitosis and talk about how entomologists can help, while also protecting themselves.

Order: Blattodea; termites were formerly Isoptera.

Family: We primarily discussed cockroaches in the Blattidae family as this group includes the species you, the listener, are most likely to encounter.

Species of Note:

  • The Madagascar hissing cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa), a common pet
  • The Central American giant cave cockroach (Blaberus giganteus), large and in charge
  • The German cockroach (Blattella germanica), an unwanted guest
  • The Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis) sometimes euphemistically called "the waterbug"
  • The Pennsylvania wood cockroach (Parcoblatta pensylvanica), an occasional visitor

Life Cycle:

Cockroaches exhibit incomplete metamorphosis. Eggs are contained within an ootheca and nymphs undergo several molts before becoming (typically) winged adults.

Distribution:

Cockroaches are found on every continent, except Antarctica. There are about 30 species which are closely associated with humans, excluding termites.

  • Can eat almost anything, but may exhibit strong flavor preferences!

  • Can squeeze into tight places and resistant to crushing

Hello bug lovers! Today, we're guided by Mike Skvarla into a deep dive on West Nile virus. A mosquito borne illness, West Nile is something the Arthro-Pod crew has learned a lot about over the course of their lives and careers. In fact, one of them even tested positive for it after trying to give blood... Hello bug lovers! Over the next two episodes, the Arthro-Pod gang is going to explore the science behind alpha-gal, also known as the red meat allergy. This is a hot topic in the US right now, with many news outlets talking about the possible extent to which this is spread out across the country. This tickborne issue, associated with lone star ticks in the US, results in an inability to consume red meat such as beef, pork, and venison. For those who live with alpha-gal, life is very different from before. They may not be able to enjoy a favorite meal or be very anxious about dining out for fear of contamination, to say nothing of the actual health issues involved. Tune in today to hear from Cindy Cochran, a Nebraskan living with alpha-gal, as well as Dr. Cosby Stone Jr., a doctor and researcher from Vanderbilt who is a national leader on alpha-gal.

Recently, Michael has been making the rounds in the news due to a discovery he made starting in 2012 back in his old stomping grounds of Arkansas. What started with insect collected straight off the side of a Wal-Mart has ended with a media blitz covering the epiphany that Mike had in front of a Zoom class in 2020 and the release of a journal article focused on a giant lacewing! Insects are extremely diverse. Part of that diversity is apparent in the ways that they consume their preferred food. Today, inspired by an anonymous listener question, the Arthro-Pod gang goes over the different types of insect mouths and how they help insects to begin the process of digestion. Then join them as they traverse the three "guts" of insects and end up on the other side of the anus with insect frass. We searched through literal piles of deer.
The easiest way to find deer keds on host is to part the hair in sequence like you're sifting through papers in a file folder. We found that the best way to do that quickly was using a louse comb. Fine forceps are then used to grab the ked before it "swims" back into the hair.Pennsylvania elk at the PA Game Commission elk check station. Deer keds will land on any cervid, including deer and elk. Elk season in Pennsylvania is earlier than deer rifle season, so gave us an opportunity to collect deer keds a few weeks earlier than usual.
Neotropical deer keds on a white-tailed deer harvested in Tennessee. Similar to European deer keds in Pennsylvania, some deer in Tennessee were loaded with keds while others were comparatively clean.
Example of a PA Parasite Hunters collection kit that was sent to hunters to collect ticks and deer keds from deer they harvested.
To test if deer keds responded to common insect repellents such as DEET, we marked off sections on a sock, applied the repellent, put the sock over an arm, and allowed keds to freely climb from an arena up the sock. At the end of 5 minutes we scored if they crossed the repellent or not.

Howdy bug lovers! Today the Arthro-Pod gang is going back in history to discuss the spongy moth after its introduction by Trouvelot. We will start our journey at the nascent site of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1891 when specimens of the spongy moth were delivered to some entomologists working there. After that, it is off to the races with political intrigue, bureaucratic frustrations, a variety of economic entomology pioneers, and unfortunately no eradication of this important invasive species. Show notesAsian longhorned tick info-The Asian longhorned tick, an invasive tick species has been in the news a lot since it has been discovered in the US several years ago. They were first reported in New Jersey in 2017, though research at Rutgers has shown that the species may have been in the state since as early as 2013.

At the National Conference on Urban Entomology in May, Jody was inspired by Maria Gonzalez-Morales, a grad student from North Carolina State University, and asked for a chance to interview her! She graciously jumped to the mic and the two of them talked about how urban pests have an impact on agriculture. Maria has spent her time during her PHD studying insecticide resistance and in this interview discusses her work specifically with bed bugs in poultry farms. Maria also talks about her dream for the future, which involves creating an inclusive place for Hispanics to learn and be impowered by the information generated from the entomological research around the world. Last episode, we dove into the reasons why the ESA chose to select a new common name for Lymantria dispar and why we'll be using spongy moth going forward. Today's episode looks further into this species by covering the introduction of spongy moth to North America. This historic event was the result of an idea by entomologist Etienne Leopold Trouvelot. In an attempt to establish an American silk industry, Trouvelot imported this invasive species and sadly lost control of them, ultimately imposing a mighty pest on North America. Join us to hear about what he was thinking, what exactly happened in Medford, MA, and what fate befell Trouvelot and the situation he created.

Trouvelot may have had a bad idea for his entomology research, but he did garner some renown in the world of astronomy in the second half of his academic life. Howdy bug lovers! We're back after our 100th episode celebration and the Arthro-Pod gang is joined by Dr. David Coyle of Clemson to talk about some problematic invasive species. The first is Asian longhorn beetle, a wood boring pest that can cause extensive issues for city landscapes and forests. David ended up with this big beetle in his state last year during the early stages of the pandemic, further complicating the problem. We also discuss the latest on the Joro spider, a problematic arachnid that seems to like the state of Georgia. Will it be the next "murder hornet" that captures everyone's attention? Attrition in the French Grande Armeé during the 1812 invasion of Russia. While the popular focus is often on the death and privation during the winter retreat, the chart clearly shows how the army was severely weakened even before reaching Moscow. In this episode, we wrap up the story of the Haitian Revolution. Toussaint Louverture consolidated power in the colony and drafted a new Constitution, in response to which Napoleon sent a massive French to bring Saint-Domingue back under French control. Much like the British before them, the French troops were decimated by yellow fever and so were not strong enough to put down the revolt that broke out when it was discovered that Napoleon planned to reimpose slavery in the colony.

We also discuss yellow fever virus, including the disease it causes, how it came to the Americas, and the mosquito that vectors it.

Jody interviewed Dr. Ana Maria Velez Arango, who is a small but mighty assistant professor in the Department of Entomology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Ana discusses her background, growing up as a young naturalist in Colombia and her journey as an undergraduate in majoring into biology to becoming known for her work in molecular biology, insect toxicology, insecticide resistance, RNAi technology and how it relates to insect behavior, physiology, and population genetics. Aside from many professional endeavors, Ana is an advocate for students, women scientists, mental health and wellness, diversity and inclusion, professional development for early career professionals, and rescue dogs.
