The seven ATLANTIC FELLOWS programs and ATLANTIC FELLOWS community were funded by the late billionaire philanthropist, CHUCK FEENEY through his Giving While Living philosophy of philanthropy. The call for reparations dates as far back as the late 19th century but reparations have yet to materialise for many of the world’s peoples. The theme of the 2020 conference was accelerating progress towards universal health coverage, and participants included TALA AL-ROUSAN and ANA SANTOS.
TALA, a Jordanian doctor, lives and works in San Diego, California, and is committed to the welfare of refugees, more than half a million of whom are hosted by Jordan. ANA is a journalist in the Philippines with a particular interest in reproductive rights. The panel explores the assumptions that different countries make about who should care for our sick, the elderly or children in society. Unpaid women around the world grease the wheels of the global economy, so what would it look like to redesign a society around the value of care and change the gender imbalance?
They consider what agencies and changes in governmental policies might shift assumptions about gender stereotypes of ‘women’s work’ and what is ‘paid’ and ‘unpaid’ in modern economies. Cuba has a strong focus on care provision, so could other nations learn lessons from the value that Cuba places on care?
