Pali was born in a remote village in Myanmar, in awe of the Burmese people and their traditional weaving methods that have been passed down through generations. Maggie and Cass are a mother-daughter team based in Melbourne, Australia and have since been working closely with their local guide and interpreter, who have enabled them to interact and trade directly with the villagers and bring their craft to the world. Baskets are woven from colourful pallet strapping, utilising reused and recycled plastic as available. Discarded pallet strapping is collected off the streets, often waste from factories or transport and packing industries.
I spoke with Cass from Pali to learn more about how Pali came to be, as well as more about the brand itself; what does repurposing really mean? How do they support the local community in Myanmar? How did they find they find a golden goose product? And what does it take to establish a brand along with international logistics from the ground up? As Cass's mum Maggie says; it's amazing what can be achieved with an idea, adventure and a bit of guts!
