Alexa Noel was No. 4 in the International Tennis Federationâs junior world rankings. Iowa head tennis coach Sasha Schmid thought for sure sheâd earn a wild-card bid to turn pro. Nevertheless, she stayed in touch with the Noel family and when the pandemic hit in March 2020, all of the professional tennis tournaments were canceled. Noel was training in Florida at the time and returned home to New Jersey, when her mother brought up the idea of playing collegiate tennis. Four Iowa Hawkeyes will head to the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships this week in Greensboro, N.C. It's a tremendous accomplishment, given the year that they had. On Aug. 21, Iowa announced women's and men's swimming, men's tennis and men's gymnastics would be cut as a result of the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, many women's swimmers entered the transfer portal. Following a Title IX lawsuit, a court-ordered reinstatement of the program came as a surprise to the athletes on Feb. 15. After this podcast was recorded, it was discovered that Emma Williams (now Squires) was actually the first Black woman athlete at Iowa, having played basketball and softball at Iowa from 1972-1974. Today, we remember pioneering Black football players at the University of Iowa. Leah is joined by Iowa athletics historian Neal Rozendaal to talk about the legacies of Frank âKinneyâ Holbrook, Archie Alexander and Duke Slater. Holbrook was the first Black collegiate athlete at Iowa. He played football and ran track for the Hawkeyes from 1895-96. Alexander was the first Black man to graduate with a degree in engineering from the University of Iowa. He played football from 1909-11. Slater is a name many Hawkeye fans will recognize. He played football at Iowa from 1918-21 and was the only Black man elected in the inaugural College Football Hall of Fame class. The end of this college basketball season will mark the end of an era for one of Iowaâs all-time great basketball families. Sunday is Senior Day for the Iowa menâs basketball team, the final game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena (presumably) for Jordan Bohannon, Iowaâs all-time leader in 3-pointers and assists, and his classmates. Itâs a game against the Wisconsin Badgers, a program Jordanâs brothers Jason and Zach played for. Another brother, Matt Bohannon, played for Northern Iowa. All four starred at Linn-Mar High School. Altogether, there has been at least one Bohannon brother on a Division I menâs basketball roster since 2006. The On Iowa Podcast was sort of the ultimate âOdd Coupleâ thing. Scott Dochterman kept the records. I tagged along, learned a lot and had a lot of fun. I donât expect Iâll be part of anything like it again unless I pull something fabulously entertaining out of my ass. I do plan to learn the electric guitar. The On Iowa pod worked because it was âhyper-Iowa.â There was nothing else, really. We didnât do guests. We did the Hawkeyes. You didnât get the âdrive by,â you got a meal and a dessert and maybe a funny hat or an action figure. Scott is the smartest dude on the beat. I felt good in his company, during the podcast and out in stadiums. I was the âOscar,â the Walter Matthau to Scottâs âFelix,â the Jack Lemmon. But it wasnât always that way. This might not make sense, but Iâll try: Where I was weak, Scott was strong and vice versa. That made for some really great content. 10 years and 2 Âœ months worth, to be exact.

We downsized and I moved to the woods across the river. Thatâs something thatâs been in the mail for me since May and a big driving force behind this. Something something pandemic. Also, at some point, you have to stop bitching to your poor wife about your job. Sheâs not your damn psychologist.
