In today’s episode, as we all brace for what will be a busy year in travel and tourism, I took a little ‘fun’ time to observe the travel trends we will be witnessing in 2026.

Some were new, some others not so much, but it was good to bring them back to light – or like in trend n.7 to actually switch off that light.

Trends are signs of major shifts in people’s preferences, values, behaviors but the funny thing is that with them, new words come to life, which we use to define and describe the nature of the travel trends – so on today’s episode, we will observe 10 new words in the travel sphere that are underlying a significant travel trend worth of notice.

Bibliography of this episode's content is included in the transcript.

Podcast host Dolores Semeraro interviews Josh Filer, Managing Director of D&S Travel Supplies based in the UK on how to nail the art of gift giving in the tourism and travel corporate world.

This is a very special time of the year.

For those of you celebrating the festivities ahead of us, this is a time that calls for celebration and reflection, time that we want to spend with our families and friends.

But even if you are not celebrating the festivities right around the corner, it’s almost impossible to escape the commercial side of things and the urge of buying gifts for the ones we love, the ones we work with, the boss or anyone else for that matter nowadays.

So today’s podcast episode is dedicated to the art of gifting, particularly in the hospitality and tourism industry.

How do we gift a business partner? A client of the travel agency, an attendees of our trade and tourism event, a guest of our hotel?

And most importantly

What do we gift them with? A branded pen? A notebook? So much in the gifting arena has been said and done, so today, when eco-friendly materials and renewable energies are becoming one of the key decision factors in whether a gift is successful or not, wrapping up a branded item is simply not enough.

My guest today is an expert in the art of gifting, particularly when it comes to corporate branded gift in the travel and hospitality industry. Mr. Josh Filer.

Josh is the Director of D&S Travel Supplies, a specialist in promotional gifts and branded merchandise based in the UK.

With Josh we are going to discuss how the art of gifting in the corporate world has changed over the years, what are people asking and how we can come up with the perfect gift for the perfect occasion, a process that he calls ‘the journey’.

IGLTA International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association Chairman Of The Board Of Directors Felipe Cardenas speaks about the challenges and opportunities for the tourism industry when tapping into the LGBTQ+ clientele to build a safe and inclusive travel experience for all.

Across the tourism industry today we often speak about embracing a more inclusive and diverse approach and mindset. But what does it exactly mean? How do we practically develop a more ‘inclusive’ company culture and what are the benefits of this approach?

The travellers profile is growing more and more complex by the day, the tourism industry operators have come to understand and even enhance a more gender neutral approach to their customers but a lot more remains to be done and the challenge is that many tourism operators do not quite know how to tackle this social change, which will inevitably have an impact on the future of their business.

  • WHY LGBTQ+ travel is crucial to building an inclusive future of travel
  • HOW you can get on board, put your destination on the map and learn what are the direct financial benefits of tapping into this social movement and
  • WHAT can you do to champion change across your company culture

Dolores Semeraro, host of Truth Behind Travel Podcast, interviews Carissa Nimah, Chief Marketing Officer at the Tourism Council of Bhutan.

Bhutan has recently reopened borders to international tourism after 2 and half long years, and to welcome back what they call ‘guests’ instead of tourists – they rebranded the destination, a rebranding with a dual purpose, of which we are going to explain more during our conversation and also how they redesigned unique experiences highlighting the values of the Bhutanese people, the culture and personality and today's guest, is also going to explain the truth behind the increased entry fee to Bhutan which they called SDF sustainable development fee – that now sits at about 200 Dollars per person.

Carissa Nima is not new to branding, particularly when it comes to upholding sustainability in tourism and hospitality, she previously worked as Guardian of the Brand with the Soneva Group in the Maldives pioneering many projects that are still – to this date – regarded as destination case studies.

Taking the time to observe 'Who is Your ACTUAL Customer?' in the tourism industry today can potentially save you from making the wrong marketing budget assumptions next year.

What if, in the tourism industry, the "Ideal Customer" has become a sort of a myth in a post-covid world?
- your most desired hotel guest has changed
- your returning travel agency client is booking elsewhere
- your loyal airline passenger is driving instead

They are all supposed to be aligned with your brand values, style, service standards, tone of voice.

BUT what if, we look into who is actually:

  • staying in your hotels
  • buying your tickets
  • booking your holiday packages

and discover WHY that they DON'T resemble your Ideal Client anymore. In today's episode, we are going to dive deep into the difference between an ideal customer and an actual customer for the tourism industry and why the difference might just be what you need to know to save you big-budget dollars on your next marketing strategy.

There’s power in observing these micro shifts in travel behavior, because you can tweak your strategy before it has even began to unfold and you can hit the ground running!

Truth Behind Travel Podcast Episode 37: The side effects of traveling after lockdowns.

If you are longing or even just thinking of traveling again soon, if you are making plans and have already picked up the phone with your trusted travel agent or you are browsing best offers online, I want to tell you a little bit of what has happened to me over the past 4 weeks of traveling in Europe.

And, before we get started, if you are listening to today’s episode and work in hospitality and travel, these might just be what many of your future guests might be going through at the moment.

Number 1 – OverpackingAs a passionate traveler, I was so used to pack&go, knowing exactly what to take, not too little, not too much. Just right. It wasn’t the case this time. [more of this on the episode]

Number 2 – Over checkingOk, that might not be a bad thing to do, given what’s going on around the world. But cross-checking the same information on 10 different websites, blogs, forums, and groups ends up creating even more anxiety. [more of this on the episode]

Number 3 - Self-doubting
Has the pandemic changed the way we connect as humans? I am afraid that - to some extend - it has. [more of this on the episode]

Number 4 - 'It's because of Covid' one too many times
Single-use of plastic has re-skyrocketed, I am afraid, during the pandemic. Here are a few of my real-life stories from the past few weeks. [more of this on the episode]

Sustainability & Environmental Specialist Jordan Flagel shares the story of TREE Explorations, his eco-tourism tours in the Amazon jungle, how to offset carbon emissions and where are we heading with the future of travel and tourism.

TREE Exploration provides life-changing experiences in nature and actionable change in the environment in Belize, Guyana, and Jamaica. TREE was originally created out of a master’s thesis that focused on how ecotourism could be used to further the conservation of tropical rainforests. It was named Tropical Rainforest Education & Exploration, with a fitting acronym for a group of tree-lovers. Although the trips are still focused in the tropical rainforests of Belize, Guyana, and Jamaica, their goal to improve sustainability has a worldwide focus, with an emphasis on shifting energy sources and sequestering carbon. Tree Exploration is a Founding Partner and Signatory of Terra Incognita’s Ethical Ecotourism Code of Conduct.
