Matt sits down for an extended interview by Silva McLeod, Tonga’s first ever female airline pilot. After flying for Royal Tongan Airlines, Silva went on to fly in Auatralia for Aeropelican, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and ultimately Virgin Blue, which became Virgin Australia. But the journey from island girl to airline pilot, as Silva tells in her new book, wasn’t an easy one.

Many Australians are understandably a bit wary of travelling overseas at the moment in case they catch COVID-19 while they're away.

Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened to Australian Frequent Flyer forum moderator Bill MacCubbin (whose AFF username is "straitman") on a recent trip to Fiji. But it wasn't really a horror story at all - Bill recovered quickly, was looked after very well and didn't have too much trouble eventually coming home. Currently, despite enormous demand for seats into Australia, the airline is only allowed to sell tickets to as few as 12 passengers per flight.

There are countless claim agencies in the European Union that specialise in pursuing airlines for compensation owed under the EC261/2004 regulation. Their promise is simple: They'll chase up airlines for money owed under EU laws for flight delays, cancellations and instances of overbooking on behalf of airline passengers who lack the time or expertise to do it themselves. If they are successful, the agency will keep a portion of the payout. If they are unsuccessful, there is no fee to the customer.

But as it turns out, these services may not be entirely without risk! In this podcast, we meet multiple Finnair passengers who ended up personally owing the airline thousands of Euros after their claim agency, IfDelayed, lost their court cases and subsequently went bankrupt. This is despite being told by the claim agency that "under no circumstances will you be liable to pay any costs or other penalties if we do not win your case".

This episode explains in detail the unfortunate series of events that led to these Finnair passengers having to pay up to $13,000 out of their own pocket, through no fault of their own. Perhaps surprisingly, nobody seems to have broken any laws along the way.

Rex Cancels All Boeing 737 Flights Until August Virgin Australia Slashes Business Class Fares

Earlier this year, consumer group CHOICE surveyed more than 4,000 Australians whose travel plans were disrupted by COVID-19. This week, CHOICE published its findings in a report called Consumer protection for Australian travellers: a plan for clarity, consistency and fairness. And the findings are pretty damning for the travel industry. Many complained that it was far too difficult to get a refund or use their travel credit.

According to CHOICE, only 17% of survey respondents actually got a full refund, over half waited more than 3 months for a resolution, and 90% of respondents believe Australian laws need to change to make it easier for consumers to get a refund when they’re unable to travel as planned.

In this episode Alison Elliot, one of the authors of the report and Head of Policy and Government Relations at CHOICE, joins Matt to discuss the report, recommendations and tips for airline customers to get their money back.

Departing Australia in 2021 is unfortunately not as simple as booking a ticket and going to the airport. If you're an Australian citizen or permanent resident who normally lives in Australia, you'll firstly need to apply for an exemption from the Department of Home Affairs to even be allowed to exit Australia. You'll then need to navigate complex COVID-19 testing requirements and entry requirements for your destination (and any transit) countries.

Over the past year, flying back to Australia has been very difficult for tens of thousands of Australians - some who are still stuck overseas. As 2020 draws to a close, there's finally some good news. Australian state borders are reopening, planes are back in the air, and more pilots are returning to work. One of them is Virgin Australia 737 pilot Chris Bournelis (a.k.a. AviatorInsight on AFF) who is now doing simulator training and flight checks ahead of returning to the skies later this month. Chris joins Matt on this episode to reflect on the year and explain the process of returning to the sky after a long period on the ground.

In 2009, the Australian Tax Office (ATO) began accepting payments by credit card. Many Australians have to pay tax anyway, so they took the opportunity to pay by card and earn frequent flyer points in the process. Since then, the banks have slowly but surely removed this loophole by excluding government payments from earning points. Next week, St George Bank will become the final major Australian bank to stop awarding points for tax payments.

But Australians have made hay while the sun was shining - and few more so than the AFF member who goes by the username "cove". Cove estimates his family has earned 100 million points by paying taxes with credit cards since 2009. In this episode, Matt finds out how he did it! You'll also learn how to continue earning points for tax payments, even after St George closes this loophole.

Next week, the Australian government will increase the number of Australians that can arrive each week from 4,000 to around 6,000 people. This is a welcome step forward and will definitely help to clear the backlog of Australians stranded overseas. But with at least 24,000 Australians currently registered as stranded - and perhaps closer to 100,000 by airline estimates - is it enough?

In this episode, Matt shares the stories of Australians stuck in the Netherlands. The arrival caps, it seems, are only part of the problem. The more immediate issue is that those Australians in the most vulnerable positions, who can least afford to remain overseas, are the same people that can least afford to pay an extortionate ticket price to get home. Buying an Economy class ticket is not an option with many airlines indefinitely bumping Economy class passengers off flights in favour of those who paid more for a premium ticket. Some airlines have stopped selling Economy tickets altogether.

Also in this episode, Norfolk Island is open for tourism from five Australian states, and will also reopen next month for travel from NSW and ACT! If you're keen for an overseas holiday, a trip to Norfolk Island is one way to do this without technically leaving the country.

On 4 September 2020, Virgin Australia creditors voted to approve the airline's sale to U.S. private equity firm Bain Capital for $3.5 billion. Qantas may have retired its last active Boeing 747, but there are still two of the "queens of the skies" on display in Australian aviation museums. One of those, a Boeing 747-200, can be found at the Qantas Founders Museum in Longreach, Queensland.

Qantas has a long and proud association with Longreach, the town where it first started its operations in the 1920s and even manufactured its own aircraft. Today, Longreach is home to the iconic museum that celebrates the history of Australia's national carrier. As well as the Boeing 747, there is a Boeing 707, Super Constellation, DC3, Catalina and other Qantas aircraft and memorabilia on display.

This week, Australia said farewell to a national icon: the Qantas Boeing 747. Over the past 49 years, Qantas - once an all-747 airline - has operated almost every Boeing 747 variant that has existed. The "queen of the skies" has transported millions of passengers to destinations all over the world, including Olympic athletes and stranded Australians returning home from disaster epicentres - many years ago from Darwin after Cyclone Tracy, and most recently from Wuhan.

Current world events have resulted in an early retirement for the Qantas 747 fleet. Despite the current pandemic, Qantas has still managed to put on three excellent final joy flights for fans of the Boeing 747. When Peru suddenly went into lockdown in March, hundreds of Australians were stranded all over the country, unaware of what was going on or how many others were in the same situation. Within days, Gus Higgins created the "Aussies in Peru" Facebook group which has been credited with connecting most of those Australians and aiding the work of repatriation activities.

In this episode, Gus Higgins tells Matt about his experience and returning home to Australia while mandatory hotel quarantine is in place.

Also in this episode, find out what it's flying on Air Koryo and travelling to North Korea - a country that had strict rules and border controls well before COVID-19 made them cool. And Matt summarises the current situation with Virgin Australia as it enters voluntary administration.

Buffalo Airways is not your typical airline. Based in Yellowknife, Canada, Buffalo Airways operates an incredible variety of historic aircraft such as the Douglas DC3 in some of the world's harshest flying conditions. It's no wonder Buffalo Airways was the subject of the popular television show Ice Pilots NWT.

Airlines seem to love married segments, but for frequent flyers and travel agents they can be extremely frustrating. Sometimes you'll find an award seat on a flight you want to book, only to find that it's not actually available if you add on a connecting flight to your final destination. Married segments are also why airlines will sometimes charge a higher amount if you remove one or more flights from a booking!
