The book tells the story of the Hofer brothers, four Hutterite men who were drafted during World War 1 and were sent to Alcatraz after refusing to wear military uniforms. This week, the MennoBrarians do a deep dive into the world of fan fiction. The first half of the ep we chat about fan fiction generally - what it is, perceptions of it, and what fandoms we tend to read from. The second half, we chat about Amish and Mennonite themed fan fictions, of which there are about 200 on the site Archive of Our Own (a site that contains almost 18 million fics). This week, the MennoBrarians watch some TV shows! The first show we review is season 1, ep 2 of Glenn Martin, DDS, a cartoon show about a family traveling the country in a mobile dentistry RV. In this episode, Glenn decides his children are addicted to technology, and that the solution is to live briefly with the Amish.
In the second half of the episode we discuss 2 Broke Girls, season 2 episode 7. The show follows two young women living in Brooklyn. In this ep, two young Amish men visit the restaurant they work at saying they are on Rumspringa, and are recruited to build a stable for a horse.
We also chat about if / what sitcoms could do better if they want to do an "Amish" episode, our favorite Catherine O'Hara shows/movies (it's relevant! promise!), and much more.

In this episode we discuss the highlights of season 7, share some stats and also stories and corrections from our listeners. Highlights include the story of how the More with Less cookbook got into trouble with a chain of restaurants, the rise of ebikes in Mount Hope, OH, and more.
Additionally, here are some of the resources shared by Steve Nolt about the Old Order River Brethren including:
- A number of very informative books in the MHL, about Amish and other Plain groups, were written by an Old Order River Brethren author, Steve Scott.
- The occasional medical column in Pathway’s Family Life magazine that the MHL gets sometimes has a health Q&A with Dr. Michael Sauder, who is Old Order River Brethren.
- Another OORB of note is poet G. C. Waldrep, about to retire from Bucknell University. He is a convert to the OORB. The OORB drive cars, have never limited higher education, and haven’t spoken PA Dutch for many generations, so they are, in some ways, an attractive option for converts who have higher ed and only speak English. Interestingly, Waldrep provided a photo of Plain hat rather that a head short for his Poetry Foundation bio. They don’t prohibit photos, but discourage them.

This week, the MennoBrarians chat with Karen Johnson-Weiner about her book, The Lives of Amish Women. The book captures the diversity of the experiences of Amish women, with Johnson-Weiner's research relying heavily on correspondence and interviews with members of Amish communities. We chat about her research, her friendships with Amish women, why there hasn't been much research published on Amish women and much more! We really enjoyed The Lives of Amish Women and recommend you add it to your reading lists if this is a subject that interests you.

This week, the MennoBrarians chat about the movie "Holy Matrimony," a 1994 comedy movie starring Patricia Arquette and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. In the movie, Patricia Arquette's character, Havanna, is unknowingly dragged into a Hutterite colony by her boyfriend Peter who she is forced to marry, and then after Peter dies in a car accident days later, she must marry Zeke, Peter's 12-year old brother per the rules of the colony. If you think that's weird, just wait til you hear us break down the rest of the plot!
We do a very detailed plot recap, and chat Hutterites (who, for the record, do not believe in Levirite marriage), state and county fairs, and what on earth this movie was trying to do.

This week, we veer a bit away from our typical subject matter to chat about a topic that Erin and Abby find interesting: the Enneagram. We are joined by guest, Marathana Prothro, an Assistant Professor of Communication at Bluffton University who is also certified through the Enneagram Institute of Ohio.
In our conversation with Marathana, we chat about how the Enneagram differs from other personality tools, how being Mennonite might impact how an Enneagram number presents or is interpreted, and spend a fair amount of time trying to help Abby determine what her Enneagram number might be.
While this episode does cover some of the basics of the Enneagram - what it is, and a brief overview of the 9 types - if the Enneagram is new to you, we recommend looking at the Enneagram Institute website for a quick primer. We use a couple terms in this episode without explanation, for example "wings" (the number directly left or right of one's primary enneagram number - for example, Erin is a 7 wing 6), and "directions of integration" or disintegration which refer to how an enneagram type grows, or reacts to stress.

This week, Abby and Erin meet with historian Steve Nolt, author of many books and articles about the Amish and director of the Elizabethtown College Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist studies. We chat about Steve's work and research, current projects, interesting questions he's been asked about the Amish, and what the word "haystack" means to him.

Roth, Project Director for MennoMedia’s project “Anabaptism at 500” and former Professor of History at Goshen College, about his most recent book, A Mennonite College for Everyone(?): Goshen College and the Quest for Identity and Inclusion, 1960-2020. Inspired by the conversation on Amish Country Treasure in season 2, in which Tillie speculated the book was written by a bot, Erin went on a research journey to see if she could figure out if the text was written by a human or AI (findings: inconclusive). In this episode, Erin shares some of what she found during this research journey.

One was a sweet rekindling of a romance between an Amish woman and a firefights, another's plot was two young [chaste] lovers reunited after being separated by an angry father who hates Christmas, and the third was a wild tale of a long-lost family member returning after being in witness protection and developing a brain tumor. This week, we discuss Banished, by Linda Byler, the first Amish fiction author we've read that is an actual member of an Old Order Amish community. The book begins in the early 1910s, and following the lives of Oba and May after their parents pass away and they are adopted by relatives in an Amish community in Arkansas. We discuss how this book handles dark themes like abuse and racism, and the differences we see in this book by Byler versus non-Amish authors.

This week, the MennoBrarians review and discuss some of the earliest books in the Amish fiction and Amish romance genre: Tillie a Mennonite Maid, from 1904, Sabina: a Story of the Amish from 1905, and The Masquerading of Margaret from 1908. These three texts are in the public domain so you can find and read them for free!
Despite being more than 100 years old, these texts share some similarities to the Amish Romance texts of today - including lots of plot lines, chaste romance, and subtle agenda pushing.

This novel follows princess Isabella of Poland and her lover Johan, a stable boy and secret Anabaptist, as they flee Poland and head to Munster. Munster in 1534 is perhaps not the best place to be, and soon they escape and run into Menno Simons.
