Persuasion: 21 - 24
The long awaited conclusion to the Persuasion conversation!
What is the deal with Mr. Elliot? Why did Wentworth just walk out on Anne at in the theater like that? How is all of this drama going to come to an end? Can Anne even handle it!? Of course she can, this is Austen after all.
This week Elle and Catrina talk all about Mr. Elliot and his motives, pick apart his dastardly plot, and have a tense conversation about just how swoon worthy the end of this book really is. After all, how powerful can a simple note even be?
Persuasion: Chapters 17 - 20
Anne is still stuck in Bath, but at least now she has a friend. After dealing with her family for too long, Anne is pleased to find an old school friend who is staying in Bath due to illness and financial troubles. What's more, the Crofts have come to Bath as well and Anne takes a walk with the admiral to find out that there is news of Louisa - also that Wentworth is on his way. Before she knows it, Anne's thoughts shift from avoiding her family to spending time near Wentworth.
This week Elle and Catrina discuss all of the happenings in Bath. Everyone is milling about, sending letters, and repeating the same gossip over and over. Catrina highlights Anne's apprehension of Mr. Elliot now that she has spent more time with him. Elle, on the other hand, wonders if Mr. Elliot didn't pull a John Thorpe and say something shady to Wentworth about Anne.
At least there is some good Austen-swooning romance brewing!

Persuasion Chapters 13-16
Anne seems to keep finding herself in awkward situations. First she is alone at the Musgrove home while everyone is still in Lyme. Then she retreats to Lady Russell's home only to be asked to spend the day with the Croft's in Kellynch Hall. When the Musgroves return and things begin to feel normal again, Anne and Kady Russell are told that the notorious Mr. Elliot has made amends with Sir Elliot. After hearing this news, Anne finally makes her way to her least favorite place, Bath.
Also, Louisa lives!
This week Catrina and Elle try to get into the mind of Anne Elliot. How is she feeling given everything that has happened lately? Elle talks about how Anne really doesn't like Bath, while Catrina talks about how Sir Elliot is still an embarrassment to the family.

Final Mansfield Park adaptations!
What would happens if Fanny Price decided to take her life into her own hands? How would her life change? Would Edmund get his just deserts? What if Lady Bertram was really into ancient Egyptian artifacts? What if she accidentally woke up an ancient mummy, who happened to fall in love with Fanny Price? Is it Mansfield Park meets The Mummy*?
This week Elle and Catrina read two Mansfield Park adaptations that add a bit of a twist. Elle reads A Contrary Wind,where Fanny gets tired of her place at Mansfield Park and becomes a governess. But Fanny's absence throws off the lives of everyone, especially Mary, Edmund, and Henry. Catrina gets "weird book of the week" for reading Mansfield Park and Mummies. This wild adventure adaptation is Austen's novel with the added obstacle of mummies and a love stricken pharaoh.

Mansfield Park Adaptations
What would life at Mansfield Park look like if it wasn't the early 1800s? What if the park was picked up and moved to 1930s Chicago, or modern day England? What would the story look like without the societal restrictions of the time, but with the modern inconveniences we have today?
This week Catrina and Elle take a look at two more "modern" Mansfield Park adaptations. Elle's book, Bellevere House, takes place in 1930's Chicago and adds a comedic flair to the Austen classic. It also features a much better version of Edmund. Catrina's book, She's the One, fast forwards Mansfield Park to modern day England. This version of the Bertram family looks more like the Osbornes than the Austens.

This week Catrina tells Elle all about a modern Young Adult adaptation of Mansfield Park. Elle shares a list of great books by Indigenous authors to check out, including swooning romances, rom-coms, fiction, and poetry.
On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court decided that the historic ruling of Roe vs Wade should be overturned. This will send any laws regarding women's rights to abortion healthcare access to the states, many of which have already put in place extremely restrictive and dangerous trigger laws. Catrina and Elle take time to discuss their opinions on this ruling.
Elle also discusses abortion access and laws during the revolutionary war era up to the early 1800's. Would Jane Austen have had access to an abortion? Would it have been legal for her to get one?

Elle takes a look at what happens after Mansfield Park, specifically following Susan Price and her life as the new helper to Lady Bertram.

Elle read Edmund Bertram's Diary, by Amanda Grange. As part of Grange's Austen heroes series, this book follows Austen story beat by beat through the POV of Edmund. While Grange always delivers a great read, this book suffers from one glaring problem in Elle's opinion.
Catrina read Mary Crawford: Revisiting at Mansfield Park, by Julia Barrett. While this adaptation is actually a sequel to Mansfield Park, it explores the repercussions of Mary's actions in the original story. So, what happens when Mary finds her way back to Mansfield? Well, her new love interest might just surprise you.

Mansfield Park - 2007 - Staring Billie Piper and Hayley Atwell
This 2007 adaptation might ring truer to the books for some, while still falling flat for others. Only inspired by the novel - unlike the 1999 version - this is a true adaptation of Mansfield Park. But does it hold up? Does it do the novel justice?
Elle and Catrina are at odds about this adaptation. While Elle feels that this is a truer adaptation, Catrina prefers the 1999 version. While this adaptation did some things well, it was lacking in other ways. But how much do those differences matter? Is it important that Fanny goes to Portsmith? How do these versions of the characters live up to their novel counterparts? Was Billie Piper the right choice for Fanny?

Mansfield Park - 1999 - Staring Frances O'Connor and Johnny Lee Miller
What happens to Mansfield Park if Fanny Price was more like Jane Austen? This adaptation of Mansfield Park is far from a true adaptation. In the title sequence it says that the film was inspired by Mansfield Park and Jane Austen's journals. This leads to an interesting combination of real-life people and fictional characters.
Elle and Catrina have their critiques of this film that range from overall storytelling to the change in character motivations. Most importantly they agree that this version of Fanny Price is not actually Fanny Price. But does this mean this film has missed the mark? Does it do Mansfield Park justice?

This week Elle and Catrina wrap up Mansfield Park and discuss some things that really stuck out to them. Elle was very interested in looking at how this book strongly focuses on morality and how modern readers may find a connection with Fanny Price to be somewhat of a stretch. Catrina was interested in comparing Fanny's relationships to both Edmund and Sir Thomas - using several popular romance novel tropes to prove that the development of her relationship to Sir Thomas was way more interesting, while her relationship to Edmund sort of fell flat.
As always, we ended with our Mansfield Park superlatives! This round was very interesting and definitely ended on a funny note, so tune in to see who was actually the biggest flirt and who would have made a cute couple if only they could have interacted with each other!

Mansfield Park: Chapters 44-48
In these final chapters of the novel, Fanny is stuck in Portsmouth while chaos is happening in London. Letters arrive to the Price household describing Tom Bertram's (junior) serious illness, Maria's indiscretion, and Mary Crawford's conniving. In the aftermath, Edmund finally goes to pick up Fanny and bring her back to Mansfield Park, where, once home, Fanny learns all that happened between Edmund and Mary that caused their falling out. Now, with Mary out of the picture - is it finally happily ever after for Fanny?
This week Elle and Catrina discuss just how diabolical Mary really is, while wondering if Edmund truly deserves Fanny. They also discuss how Sir Thomas has grown a lot over the course of the story and comes to realize all of his shortcomings as a parent. Which is good for him, because unfortunately Mrs. Norris isn't so lucky, as her favorite niece has become her punishment.

Fanny is super unhappy in Portsmith. Her house is hectic and her family doesn't seem to care that she is there. But don't worry, things are only going to get weirder when Henry Crawford shows up. At least there hasn't been any word about an engagement from Edmund or Mary Crawford yet.
This week Catrina and Elle take a good look at the Price family. Austen is known for showcasing the flaws of beloved family members and the Price family is no exception. Catrina also asks Elle if she thinks Henry Crawford is genuine in his affections for Fanny.

Mansfield Park: Chapters 35 - 38
Edmund feels it's necessary to offer his opinion on the matter of Fanny and Henry's potential engagement. While he disguises his concern as help, it really isn't helpful at all. What's more, Sir Thomas decides to remind Fanny how good she's got it by sending her back home. Needless to say, Fanny needs a vacation, but she isn't going to find it at her parent's house.
This week Elle and Catrina agree that Edmund Bertram is the worst hero so far. Elle gets up in arms about his mansplaining. Catrina can't decide if dastardly is the right word to describe Sir Bertram. Either way, both men need to stop telling Fanny how to feel.

Mansfield Park: Chapters 31 - 34
The men in Fanny's life just don't understand. After getting an unexpected and unwanted proposal from Henry Crawford, Fanny spends the rest of these chapters telling him no. But Henry isn't the only one Fanny has to deal with. Sir Thomas freaks out when she tells him she will not marry Henry. Surely Edmund will come to her rescue... yeah, no.
This week Elle and Catrina get angry at all of the men at Mansfield Park. They remind the characters again that no means no. Fanny shouldn't have to deal with all this nonsense cuz she doesn't want to marry a trash king. Also, what the heck Edmund?! You're better than that.

Mansfield Park: Chapters 27-30
Fanny's anxiety around Mary Crawford's gift continues to rise after Edmund also gifts her a necklace. Edmund starts to get anxious about whether Mary is willing to marry him after he becomes a clergyman. Henry becomes buddy-buddy with William and Mary gets into a pretty intense fight with Edmund. All of this before the ball at Mansfield Park even begins!
This week Elle and Catrina discuss everything from Fanny's necklace dilemma to Henry Crawford's declaration of love. Catrina gets frustrated at Edmund and Mary's constant back and forth between liking each other and complaining about the church. While Elle continues to not believe Austen when she reads that Henry Crawford is "in love."

Mansfield Park: Chapters 23- 26
Fanny has finally been invited to dinner all on her own - well, except Edmund was also invited, but that isn't the point. While Fanny is nervous about her dinner at the Grants, she is excited, until she sees a familiar barouche outside. Henry Crawford is back, and he has a devilish little plan for Fanny. But when an unexpected guest arrives at the Park, everything seems to shift a little and no one seems to be sure of their feelings.
This week Elle and Catrina discuss everything from dinner at the Grants to the arrival of William Price - which results in another dinner at the Grants. They talk about how Edmund and Mary's stubbornness is what is truly keeping them apart, how rude Mrs. Norris really is, and this new relationship between Henry and Fanny.
What's more, Elle decides that Jane Austen is just flat out lying about Henry Crawford's feelings on a certain lady.

From the beginning, Edmund wondered what would happen if his father found out about the play. Well, now we get to see it first hand because Sir Thomas has returned to Mansfield Park. This changes everything. What will become of the Maria, Henry, Mr. Rushworth love triangle? Will Edmund officially become a clergyman, or has Mary convinced him otherwise? How will life change at the park now that Sir Thomas is back?
This week Elle and Catrina discuss the goings-on at the park. We dissect Maria's interesting decision about her marriage. Henry's classless response to Sir Thomas' return. Fanny and Mary's new, and somewhat forced friendship. This week is certainly setting us up for an interesting second act.

Mansfield Park: Chapters 14 - 18
After much deliberation, the gang at Mansfield Park have finally decided on a play - Lover's Vows. This scandalous play causes a lot of drama around the house, especially between the Bertram sisters. What's more, it puts Edmund in a bit of a situation when he has to choose between standing his ground against the play and taking up a part to keep this scandal under wraps.
This week Catrina and Elle discuss how Henry Crawford tears apart Maria and Julia, Edmund's failing convictions, and why Mary Crawford might not be as devious as they previously thought. This episode has a lot of really juicy bits, and poor Fanny is right in the middle of all of it.

If you are looking for scandalous activities in Jane Austen novels, then these are the chapters for you! Bridgerton fans will love all this drama. While visiting Southerton, the Mansfield Park gang manages to separate themselves into pairs and find some hidden away places. Edmund and Mary leave Fanny to wander the woods. Maria and Henry send Mr. Rushworth away to find a key before heading out into the shrubbery alone. It all happens right in front of Fanny!
This week Elle and Catrina talk about the drama and scandal that happens at Southerton. From Mary bad talking the church in front of Edmund to Julia getting to ride next to Henry on the way home, there is drama around every corner this week.
But the real question is, can Mary Crawford convince Edmund to leave the church?

Mansfield Park: Chapters 5-8
There is something about this Mary Crawford and her fuckboi of a brother Henry. They are visitors from the city who are lauded as the height of sophistication and knowledge by the Bertram sisters. Mary Clearly has her eyes set on one of the Bertram brothers, while Henry finds himself flirting with the sisters. But, most egregiously, Mary keeps taking out Fanny's horse.
This week Elle and Catrina talk about the Crawfords and how they are integrating themselves into the party at Mansfield Park. Mary Crawford has a lot of opinions and somehow offends everyone, while still charming their pants off. While Henry revels in the attention he is getting from both Maria and Julia Bertram. We only get to see the beginning of the drama as Mary starts to pull Edmund's attention away from his poor cousin and Henry encourages Maria's flirting.
Also, who asks farmers to lend out their wagons during hay harvesting season? Rude much?

Mansfield Park Chapters 1-4
Season 4 is all about the drama and scandal of Mansfield Park. In this episode, we meet all of the major players in this Austen novel. We meet our heroine, Fanny Price, our hero Edmund Bertram, his sisters Maria and Julia who give off major evil stepsister vibes, and the adults in the story, who really should be paying more attention, Sir and Lady Bertram and Mrs. Norris. If that sounds like a lot of backstory, you'd be right.
This week Elle and Catrina start off Mansfield Park by unraveling the tangle of backstory that is the first four chapters. There is a lot of information about the Bertrams, the Prices, and that sly Mrs. Norris. Luckily this is just setting the groundwork for some pretty scandalous behavior.

It' 's time to start our next Austen novel!
This season, Catrina and Elle will be reading Mansfield Park. A story about an unfortunately named character, Fanny Price, and her experiences living with her wealthy Aunt and Uncle in Mansfield Park. Full of familial drama, historical context, and one of Austen's biggest F-bois, this novel is going to keep us on our toes.
But before we open the pages of this classic novel, Elle is going to set us up. She is going to tell us everything we need to know about Miss Fanny Price as we begin this season.
This week, Elle and Catrina talk about Guillermo de Toro's 2015 film, Crimson Peak!

Elle does a wonderful job of setting up the film's major plot points - highlighting the gorgeous scenery, expertly designed costumes, and actors chosen at the peaks of their careers all coming together under the brilliance of del Toro's vision to create a truly expectational tale of horror and romance.
Catrina reviews the gothic tropes discussed in the Northanger Abbey wrap up episode to see which ones stand out in the film and how they are used to add to the atmosphere of terror and suspense.
But friends, this is a Jane Austen podcast, so how does this compare to Northanger Abbey? Are there any similarities at all? Can we find the gothic in the sentimental aspects of Austen's story; is there any reprieve from the specters and madness of Crimson Peak? We shall see.

This week, Elle and Catrina read through two modern adaptations of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. Catrina discuss the drama of North by Northanger,by Rebecca A. Jamison, while Elle talks about the chemistry in Northpointe Chalet,by Debra White Smith.
Everything feels like a Hallmark rom-com in North by Northanger.A mix between Northanger Abbey and North by Northwest, this book has kidnapping, attempted murder, and a former lawyer turned truck driver. Most importantly, it might be the first book Catrina hasn't enjoyed.
Northpointe Chalet feels like it should be a rom-com, but is missing a bit of the rom and leans too heavily on the ridiculousness of the com. While Elle may have had some reservations about it, this book certainly has an audience. But, is it enough like the source material?
Here is a non-christmas episode on Christmas.
This week, Elle and Catrina read two Northanger Abbey adaptations. While each book is part of a collection of adaptations that we have read before. One is Northanger Abbey through the eyes of Henry Tilney. The other is a modern take - do modern, Catherine might be a Twilight girl.
Elle reviews Henry Tilney's Diary by Amanda Grange. This is the third book by Amanda Grange Elle has read for the podcast and, like the others, it doesn't disappoint. If you love Henry Tilney, then this book will have you falling in love even more. What's more, we finally get to see the end of the book play out in real-time.
Catrina got to re-read the modern adaptation called Northanger Abbey by Val McDermid. This modern adaptation is part of the Jane Austen project that brought us Eligible and Emma. What makes this modern adaptation unique is that this version of Catherine is very relatable to anyone who was into supernatural books in the early 20-teens. Oh, and General Tilney might be a vampire...

This week Catrina and Elle talk about the only film adaptation they will be watching of Northanger Abbey. How did this film compare to the book? What was changed? What stayed true to the story? How did this adaptation compare to other films?
With a few deviations from the book, this adaptation actually improves upon the original story. Catherine indulges in a few book fantasies. Isabella feels the repercussions of her actions. But, most importantly, we see how the story ends for General Tilney.

Northanger Abbey: Chapters 24 - End
This week Catrina and Elle finish Northanger Abbey. We finally get to see the end of Catherine's tale. Most importantly, we finally see the scariest part of the entire novel - will our hero survive her terrifying circumstance?
Northanger Abbey is starting to feel a bit like home for Catherine. She and Elenor are getting along great! Until one evening, General Tilney returns abruptly from London and demands that Catherine leave the following morning - no time to send for a family member, no money, no servant to accompany her. GASP!
A woman alone riding seventy miles by post! Anything could happen! Will she make it? Why would General Tilney send her away? What does this mean for her potential future with Henry?

Northanger Abbey Chapters 24 - 27
This week Elle and Catrina get very confused about what chapters they are talking about. But after they get it all settled, they discuss everything from Mrs. Tilney's death, Captian Tilney's potential marriage, and Isabella's betrayal.
Catherine finally discovers the truth about Mrs. Tilney's death after being caught snooping around the house by none other than Henry Tilney. Will this ruin her chances at a happily ever after with our hero? No, actually, he found it kinda cute. Just further proof that Tilney really is the best Austen hero.
While there might not be a scandal between Catherine and Henry, there is certainly trouble afoot. Catherine soon receives a letter from her brother James about his engagement to Isabella. Everything has fallen apart and who could be to blame? Isabella? James? Perhaps, Captian Tilney?

Northanger Abbey - Chapters: 20-23
Elle and Catrina finally make it to Northanger Abbey... I mean... Catherine Morland finally makes it to Northanger Abbey!
Catherine heads to the Abbey with the Tilney's. She is extremely excited because she gets to spend time with her new friend Elenor and her love interest Henry. Most importantly, she gets to go and stay in an abbey! Her little gothic novel fangirl heart might just explode.
Of course, she can't visit an abbey without finding all the spooky stuff. Henry tells her about all the mysterious things she is likely to find in his old house and Catherine certainly finds them. What's more, she believes she has uncovered a secret that even Henry and Elenor are unaware of.
Who needs a secret wife in the attic, when you have a secret wife in the basement?

Northanger Abbey: Chapters 16 to 19
This week Catrina and Elle finally enter the spooky part of this novel. These first chapters of volume two set the stage for our eventual trip to the titular house. What's more, we get a bit of insight into Isabella and James' relationship.
Catherine starts off this section by spending time with our new favorite hero, Henry Tilney. More importantly, we get to meet Henry's older brother, Captain Tilney. He is handsome, charming, and flirting like crazy with the recently engaged Isabella.
Our innocent and naive heroine doesn't quite understand why her friend is flirting with Captian Tilney. We get it, they are both young, hot, and James clearly doesn't make enough money to keep Isabella happy, so she is going to flirt a bit... right?

This week Elle and Catrina finish volume 1 of Northanger Abbey. Elle is excited that we get to spend more time with Mr. Tilney and Catrina relates to Catherine's dilemma of choosing between friend groups.
Despite John Thorpe's best efforts, Catherine gets to spend some quality time with Henry Tilney... and his sister. More importantly, she learns that her beloved Henry likes novels! He reads fiction and he doesn't make fun of Catherine for her love of books. He really is perfect.
Of course, John does something bad because he is a terrible, terrible person.

Dear Emma, by Katie Heaney features college student Harriet who was recently ghosted by a guy she was seeing. Now she has to spend time with his new girlfriend as they work together in the library. Luckily, Harriet great at giving advice through her column, Dear Emma. Sadly, she isn't very good at taking it. But is this really an Emma interpretation?
If I Loved You Less, by Tamsen Parker is as if Emma were cut out of the Regency and placed in modern Hawaii. Theo is a young woman who has fallen in love with matchmaking. After having her own emotions toyed with, she comes to realize that her perfect match has always been right in front of her: long-time friend Kini. But does this interpretation really feel like a romance novel?
We are finally done with Emma and ready to move on to our next Austen novel.

This week Catrina and Elle discuss Emma adaptations by authors of color. One follows Ania Khurana as she mingles with Dehli high society. The other is about Aisha Ali, a young Muslim woman working at a matchmaking agency.
Polite Society, by Mahesh Rao, truly is the perfect blend of Emma and Crazy Rich Asians. While the story follows the plot points of Austen's work, the world-building and storytelling aspects are taken right from Kevin Kwan's novels.
Aisha, by Ikhlas Hussain, takes Emma, throws in a bit of Pride and Prejudice, and blends it into a wonderful love story. Set in a Muslim community in Canada, this story is all about finding love, accepting others, and loving yourself.

Elle reads "Off-Script" by Kate Watson. This modern adaptation follows Emma Crawford, a young celebrity who is excited to start filming her new film. While her life has never been simple, what with a demanding father, a fellow celebrity brother, and a plethora of adoring fans, things start to get a little crazy as Emma starts to play career-matchmaker.
Catrina reads "Emma" by Alexander McCall Smith. What would Emma look like if it were set in the early 2010s? Turns out, it's pretty similar. This adaptation takes place in modern Highbury and follows Emma's story pretty closely. However, what makes this book different is we get to see insight into Mr. Woodhouse's childhood. Also, he eats and ENJOYS cake.

Emma Chapters 49 - End
Mr. Knightley confesses that he loves Emma, not Harriet, and they get engaged! Frank Churchill is on an apology tour for his secret engagement to Jane Fairfax and we finally get to see them happy together. Harriet goes to London to see a dentist and comes back engaged to Mr. Martin. In the end, they were all happily married.
This week Catrina and Elle discuss Mr. Knightley's really kinda creepy comment about loving Emma since she was 13, how we all forgot about Mrs. Weston's baby, and that we really want to see the story from Jane's point of view. Most importantly, Elle was correct about the pianoforte!

Emma Chapters 44-48
Well, we should have seen it coming. Frank Churchill has been keeping a secret from everyone at Highbury, and it is a pretty big one. Emma, of course, had no idea. She was as shocked as everyone! But we all know by now that Emma doesn't always know what is actually going on around her. So much so in fact that she and Harriet have a big falling out after Harriet reveals her new secret crush.

Emma Chapters 39-43
There is some drama in Highbury! First, Harriet gets the crap scared out of her. Then Mr. Knightley catches Frank Churchill in a lie. Frank angers Jane Fairfax in front of everyone. Mrs. Elton does exactly what Jane asked her not to do and Jane is so mad she leaves a party. Then Frank shows up and is a real jerkface. But in the end, it is Emma who is the real bully.
This week Elle and Catrina agree that the entire book should have been written from Mr. Knightley's point of view because that man knows how to pay attention to what is going on around him.

Emma Chapters 34 - 38
This week Emma tries, once again, to "be a better friend" to Jane Fairfax. She must host a dinner for the new Mrs. Elton. During this dinner, we find out that Frank Churchill is coming back to Highbury! This means they can finally have the ball!
Elle and Catrina start to get excited about where the story is going. Finally, there is some action, flirting, and mystery. What's more, Mr. Knightley does something really nice, and Emma legit compliments him for it! That's what we call progress!

Emma Chapters 29-33
This week Frank and Emma conspire to have a ball. But, of course, things don't exactly go according to plan. Suddenly Mrs. Churchill is ill and cannot be without Frank. So, he must leave and the ball must be cancelled. Wait... was that an almost proposal?! Don't worry you'll forget all about it when Mrs. Elton finally shows up!
Elle has some opinions about Frank's true intentions. Catrina latches on to the truth that Austen wrote about men and their messes.
Emma Chapters 25 - 28
Someone has purchased Jane Fairfax a pianoforte and it has caused quite a stir. Emma attends a party and hears that a mystery person has gifted Jane with a pianoforte, which is quite a gift. Nearly everyone believes that it is from the Campbells, but Emma suspects otherwise. After all, there are the Dixon's to consider.
Catrina and Elle discuss this mysterious gift and all the excitement is has sparked in Highbury. Also, Elle has a theory about who actually purchased the piano - and it will certainly come to a surprise for Ms Woodhouse.
Emma Chapters 19-24
Listeners, we finally meet Jane Fairfax! What's more, we also finally meet Frank Churchill! Now we can start to understand all the memes.
Elle and Catrina discuss how the introduction of these new characters changes things around Highbury. Emma starts to suspect that Jane isn't visiting for the reasons she is claiming and tries to get information to confirm her suspicions. All the while, Elle and Catrina start to suspect that Frank Churchill will shake things up in this small town.
Also, Mr. Elton gets married, Harriet has an awkward meeting with the Martins, and both hosts would like to kill Ms. Bates and Mr. Woodhouse for talking so long about pork.
Emma Chapters 14-18
It's Christmas time in Highbury and the Woodhouse family, Knightley's in tow, are going to spend Christmas Eve with the Weston's at Randalls. Despite the complaining of snow and cold, everyone has a splendid time - until Emma manages to be left alone in a carriage with Mr. Elton.
Elle and Catrina discuss the family dynamic, Mr. Elton's unwanted confession, and Emma's small semblance of growth. But, most importantly, they talk about the most ridiculous argument between Emma and Knightley in the book (so far).
Emma Chapters 8-13
This week Elle and Catrina discuss Emma's complete inability to see that Mr. Elton is flirting with her. Catrina is flabbergasted at the way in which Mr. John Knightly treats his wife. Elle complains about having to listen to 11 minutes of Mr. Woodhouse complaining. Neither have any cultural context for Mr. Elton's "charade."
But the most important question of the day is - Who the hell is Jane Fairfax?!
Emma Chapters 1-7
Season 2 of Wit Beyond Measure begins with the first few chapters of Jane Austen's Emma. Elle and Catrina meet the residents of Highbury. There is the handsome Vicar, the older newly wed couple, the town gossip, the naive new girl, the worrisome old man, the rich bachelor, and young Miss Emma Woodhouse.
What are Elle and Catrina's first impressions of these truly unique characters? What kind of trouble to they get themselves into? Is Emma really as annoying as Elle thinks she is?
This is considered Austen's best, and most complete novel. Join Catrina and Elle as they read it for the first time.
This week Elle and Catrina talk about two Pride and Prejudice adjacent books. The first is through the point of view of Kitty Bennet after the events of Pride and Prejudice. The second is the life story of Anne de Bough.
Elle read What Kitty Did Next, which is a coming of age story following Kitty Bennet. This book reads like a sequel and Elle wishes it were cannon. There is romance, wit, amazing character development, and even a rare smile from Mr. Darcy to Kitty.
Catrina reads The Heiress, which focuses on Anne de Bough and her life at Rosings. This part- coming of age, part-gothic novel shows us what actually ails Miss de Bough and how she finally gets her life together.
This week Catrina and Elle discuss two Pride and Prejudice adaptations that feature a multicultural point of view. One follows Ayesha Shamsi in a modern-day Muslim Pride and Prejudice love story set in Canada. The other is the story of Trisha Raje, an Indian-American story of family and love set in San Fransisco.
Catrina shares her reading of Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaludin. Elle raves about Pride and Prejudice and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev.

This week Catrina and Elle read two Pride and Prejudice modern adaptations. One a modern romance set in Cincinnati, and the other a Young Adult novel in Bushwick.
Elle reads the rom-com, Bachelor inspired retelling Eligible. It follows Liz Bennet in her late 30's as she deals with her family drama, a reality show star arriving in town, and her sister's pregnancy. To top it off, she runs into a prideful new surgeon she can't seem to get out of her head.
Catrina reads the hit YA novel Pride. Zuri Benitez, loves her family and her loud, colorful, close-knit neighborhood. Enter the Darcy family who have turned the most run down house in the neighborhood into a mansion. What happens when Zuri and the arrogant Darius Darcy start clashing?
This week Catrina and Elle take a look at Pride and Prejudice from a different point of view. Well, actually, two different points of view. We have moved on from film adaptations to looking at a few book adaptations.
Catrina tackled "The Other Bennet Sister" by Janice Hadlow. This novel takes readers through most of the events of Pride and Prejudice through Mary Bennet's point of view. However, this book goes far beyond P&P's happy ending. Don't worry though, Catrina won't spoil a thing.
Elle takes a look at "Mr. Darcy's Diary" by Amanda Grange. This book follows the original text very closely, so there aren't too many spoilers to be had, however there is certainly a lot of insight into our favorite romantic hero.

Pride and Prejudice: Chapters 56 - End
We have finally made it to the end of this amazing book! We have so much to say that we had to break episode 10 into two different parts! In part 1 we have a showdown between the Queen of Slay, Lady Catherine, and fan favorite, Lizzy Bennet. These two heavy weights battle at Longbourn about the potential marriage of Mr. Darcy. Lady Catherine doesn't hold anything back, but Lizzy Bennet holds her own. In what is one of the best exchanges between two fictional characters ever written, who will come out on top? More importantly, can we do this justice?Also, Mr. Collins dares to send another letter.
Pride and Prejudice: Chapters 52- 56
We finally have one, everyone! We finally have a proper and welcomed proposal! It's taken a while to get here, but at least someone knows what they are doing.
But first - we have the most tea ever spilled in an Austen novel. Lizzy hears back from her aunt about WTF happened at Lydia's wedding. Why was Darcy there? Well, turns out, he did a lot more than just attend the nuptials. Lets just say that Darcy has finally warmed even Catrina's heart!
Back to that proposal. There is love and happiness and joy. We swoon. It truly is a happily ever after - except it isn't the end.
Pride and Prejudice: Chapters 46-51
Ungovernable Lydia + Sketchy Wickham = Trouble for the Bennets
Letters, letters, letters. So. Many. Letters! Why, you ask? Because Lydia has absconded with Wickham in the night! (GASP) She believes she’s going to Scotland to be married to him, but there's no proof of this and the structure of the Bennet’s domesticity is destabilized.
Lizzy’s trip is cut short, Mrs. Bennet is teetering on the edge of insanity (more than usual), Mr. Bennet is run off to find the lovers, Kitty and Mary are, well, Kitty and Mary, and Jane is carrying the brunt of the stress on her shoulders. How could this possibly be resolved? What are people going to say about the entire affair?
Pride and Prejudice: Chapters 41- 45
Lizzy Bennet finally gets to see the estate she could have been the mistress of - and she starts to regret her decision. She is in awe of the grounds, and so are we. Let's just say that Pemberly is better at flirting than Mr. Darcy.
While on vacation with the Gardiners, her really cool aunt and uncle from London, the three of them decide to go to the famous Pemberly. As you might expect, Lizzy is nervous, but is assured Mr. Darcy isn't home. Well, that is until he shows up. Now Lizzy has to deal with the embarrassment of finding herself touring the house of the man she refused to marry! Awkward...
Oh, and Lydia goes to Brighton with her newly wed friend and the militia. It's totally going to be fine though.
Pride and Prejudice: Chapters 34 - 40
Darcy has proven that he is an awkward man, but nothing is more awkward than his proposal to Elizabeth. Full of declarations of love and insults to her family. How romantic? Of course, Lizzy takes this opportunity to tell Mr. Darcy off. This conversation prompts a decidedly long letter what causes Lizzy a bit of an existential crisis.
Pride and Prejudice: Chapters 25 - 33
A lot happens to the Bennet sisters between Christmas and Easter. Both Jane and Lizzy go on a trip. Jane gets a pretty cold welcome in London by Miss Bingley and Mrs Hurst. Lizzy, on the other hand, is welcomed by the newly-wed Collins family. We finally meet Lady Catherine in person. But what is this? Mr. Darcy and his dashing cousin Col. Fitzwilliam decide to visit Rosings while Lizzy is there? This couldn't possibly be awkward - or at least not until a little love triangle starts forming.
Also, conflict between the hosts! Who stands up for Mr Darcy and who condemns his actions with no regard to the fact that he is super cute and flirty in these episodes? (It's certainly not who wrote this description.)
Pride and Prejudice: Chapters 19-24
If you haven't heard enough about Mr. Collins, this is the episode where he really "shines." Yes, we've finally get to discuss the infamous proposal of Mr Collins to Lizzy Bennet. Probably one of the most iconic scenes of Pride and Prejudice, followed by one of the best lines in all of the books. While completely cringe-worthy in itself, this proposal sets up so much of what follows in this classic romance.
