Welcome to the final episode of Season 10 of The Business of Endurance.

This season has taken us from the boardroom to Kona, via high mountains and some of the most demanding races on the planet. We kicked off with Chris Brindley MBE, sharing leadership lessons, critical thinking frameworks and the link between elite sport and high-performing businesses, before hearing from Ironman legend Julie Moss as she relived the iconic “crawl” in Kona and what it taught her about worthiness, vulnerability and grit.

We were joined by Dr Stacy Sims, whose pioneering work in female physiology is changing how women train, fuel and recover, and by João Andrade, founder of the 100 Series, who opened up about burnout, cardiac collapse mid-race, and how it forced him to completely rethink his life and work–life balance.

Sean Conway returned as our first-ever repeat guest to unpack his “Endurance Grand Slam” – including 105 Ironmans in 105 days – and the mindset behind having no Plan B. Ultra-running great Ryan Sands then took us deep into true adventure with stories from Lesotho, Western States and beyond, where culture, risk and resilience collide.

We closed the season with four-time Ironman world champion Chrissie Wellington OBE, exploring mental toughness, solitude, eating disorders in elite sport, coaching philosophies and the psychological pillars that underpin world-class performance.

In this wrap-up episode, Charlie and Claire revisit the key lessons, emotional moments and recurring themes from each of these conversations, and share why Season 10 has been one of the most powerful yet.

We're going to have a break now Season 10 has finished but you can still dive into our back catalogue of over 150 episodes and explore even more stories from the world’s best endurance athletes, adventurers and coaches.

Today’s guest is one of the most extraordinary endurance adventurers alive: Sean Conway.

If you’ve ever questioned what the limits of human endurance might be, Sean has probably already gone there. From swimming the length of Britain, to cycling across Europe, to setting the record for the longest ever triathlon, he’s built a career on redefining what’s possible.

Most recently, he completed Iron105 - an unimaginable feat of 105 consecutive Ironman triathlons. But this conversation isn’t just about mind-blowing records.

Sean’s philosophy of “first, furthest, fastest, foremost” is a blueprint for how we can all approach life and business. His story of growing up in Africa, of struggling to find belonging, and of turning suffering into meaning, will challenge you to think differently about resilience, purpose, and success.

If you’re looking for inspiration to push past your limits - in sport, in business, or in life - this episode will give it to you.

Highlights:

  • The Ball to Chase: Whether it’s 105 Ironmans or a creative project, life’s spark lives in the chase.
  • No Plan B: Because if there’s a backup, you’ll take it. Commitment is clarity. The finish line doesn’t move.
  • Flip a Coin, Keep Your Soul: After breaking the record, he let fate decide each extra day. Heads - go again. Tails - stop. Day 105 said “enough.”
  • Monkey & Terrier: Creativity meets obsession - the writer dreams, the terrier chases. Feed both or lose your spark.
  • Community as Fuel: The snowball effect - momentum attracts tribe. Surround yourself with people who lift you higher.
  • Long-Game Goal Setting: Plan a decade ahead. The goal in his diary - row the Atlantic with his family in 2035.
  • Dear Grandkids: Writing now for the next generation - a book of wild childhoods, near-lions, and lessons for life.
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit Returns: From secret school tuck shops to adventure series - hustle never left, it just evolved.
  • Micro-Manage the Margins: You don’t find one 100% gain - you find a hundred 1% ones.

Today, we welcome Joao Andrade - a man whose extraordinary journey from biotech entrepreneur to heart‑tested ultrarunner offers powerful lessons in health, resilience, and leadership.

In just five years Joao progressed from novice runner to conquering the legendary Badwater 135 - all while founding, scaling, and exiting a successful biotech business.

He’s also the co‑founder of One Hundred’s global endurance‐race series, he pitched and was initially backed by Stephen Bartlett on Dragons’ Den, and faced a near‑fatal heart event mid‑race.

This conversation digs deep: how Joao balances the demands of business and ultra‑endurance, uncovers the moment his body made him stop, and explores the mental shifts that fuel his rapid performance rise.

You’ll hear how business strategies mirror ultra‑race tactics, why body‑listening is non‑negotiable, and what it takes to lead with grit, heart, and vision. If you’re striving for a healthier, higher‑performing life - this episode is your roadmap.

Highlights:

  • Stress, Shock, Stop: A stress-driven arrhythmia, tachycardia, and blackout - his body’s non-negotiable wake-up call.
  • Badwater, Empty Finish: Crossing the line with nothing inside; the moment he learned outcomes aren’t the goal - alignment is.
  • IPO Grind to Ultra Mind: 120-hour weeks, a London float, and the realization that endurance can heal - but only if you change the load, not just add to it.
  • From Stem Cells to Safety Nets: Pioneer of a stem-cell insurance model - innovation aimed at certainty on life’s worst days.
  • Costa Rica’s Monster: 209 miles, two Everests of vert, night jungle - fear swapped for presence; joy found mid-suffer.
  • Design the Pace: Sleep, fuel, delegation, and boundaries - because the body keeps the score, and balance is a strategy, not a slogan.
  • Tap > Faint: Jiu-jitsu wisdom for life - know when to endure, and when to tap, reset, and return stronger.
  • Harder Than 200 Miles: For Joao, entrepreneurship beats ultrarunning on difficulty - daily problems, infinite rounds, no finish arch.
  • Dragons’ Den, Different Door: On-screen “yes,” off-screen no deal - then a better fit with Macca and a clearer path for The 100.

Today’s guest is one of the world’s leading voices in the science of female performance - and she’s here to change the way you think about training, recovery, and your body.

Dr. Stacy Sims coined the phrase “Women are not small men” - and she’s spent her career proving why.

In this episode, we unpack everything from caffeine and cold-water therapy to cycle-based training, menopause, RED-S, and strength training after 40. Whether you’re a female athlete, a coach, or simply someone looking to optimize health and energy at any age - this is the episode for you.

You’ll also hear the story of how Stacy went from elite athlete to world-renowned researcher - and what she’s learned by standing at the frontlines of sport science, often as the lone voice in the room.

This episode is packed with myth-busting, empowering science - and practical tools you can use starting today. Let’s dive in.

Highlights:

  • Women ≠ Small Men: How the moment a lab tossed her data sparked a mission to rebuild sports science for female physiology.
  • Lift Heavy, Live Long: From teens to menopause, heavy strength trains the nervous system, protects power, bones, and brain.
  • Fuel the Clock, Not the Hype: Early eating and post-training protein + carbs beat late-morning “fasting” for women’s health.
  • Beyond “Just Go on the Pill”: Track cycles, fix low energy, consider real fixes for cramps and heavy bleeds - don’t mute the system.
  • Athlete to Advocate: From Kona and World Cups to the lab bench - lived experience powering better answers for women and girls.
  • Puberty’s Performance Dip: A temporary wobble, not a verdict - relearn movement, build strength, keep girls in the game.
  • Her Why: Empower the next generation - science, not stereotypes - so daughters inherit sport that finally fits.
  • Test, Don’t Guess: Cycle-aware training, caffeine trials, and simple logs turn “generic advice” into personal performance.
  • Heat Loves Her, Ice Not So Much: Women gain more from sauna; skip the ice baths - cool water beats ice-cold shock.

Today’s episode is a little different - because today’s guest is... me. Well, not exactly me, but my digital doppelgänger: AI Charlie.

That’s right, I’ve created an AI version of myself, trained on everything I’ve ever said on this podcast and beyond, and today, I’m putting him in the hot seat. Why? Because I wanted to test something: Can an AI trained on my conversations, thoughts, and beliefs deliver insight, inspiration, and maybe even a little wisdom about the world of endurance sports, just like Claire & I aim to do with our guests each week?

Think of this as an experiment in self-reflection, curiosity, and the ever-evolving relationship between humans, performance, and technology. We dive into some of the core themes of The Business of Endurance - mental resilience, balance, performance, and purpose - but through the lens of someone - or something - that knows me perhaps a little too well.

So buckle up for a conversation with... my AI-Clone. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll uncover something new about what it means to endure.

Highlights:

  • The Trifecta Morning Routine: Why Movement, Mindfulness, and Growth Fuel Peak Performance
  • Conversations with Your Digital Doppelgänger: Can AI Reflect, Inspire, and Challenge Us?

This narrative isn't solely about the finish lines crossed or the business milestones achieved; it's about the philosophy of taking three months off every year. Having authored four books, I've sought to distill the lessons learned from the endurance required in sports, business, and life into insights that resonate beyond the pages. As Claire delves into my story, we'll explore the essence of balancing high performance with true enjoyment, the challenges of maintaining this equilibrium, and the victories—both big and small—that have defined my journey. Tom Evans, a former British Army Captain, first made his mark on the ultra-running world in 2017, when he came third in the 251km desert ultra Marathon des Sables.
Despite entering on the back of a bet with a friend, his third-place finish was the best result any European had ever achieved in the history of the race.

Tom astounded once again in 2018, when he won the 101km CCC race at the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) – the pinnacle of an incredibly successful racing year, which also saw him take the top spot (and break course records) at the Coastal Challenge Costa Rica and the South Downs Way 50.

Since then he has podiumed at the 2 most iconic trail races in the world; The Western States and the UTMB, so he has achieved a huge amount in his short time in the sport.

Claire and I wanted to chat to him about how his time in the army has helped him plan and execute races so effectively, how he focuses on tracking down the marginal gains and what data he does and doesn't find valuable in recovering from these monumental 100 mile runs.

Dede Griesbauer recently became the Ultraman World Champion at the age of 52. Not turning pro until she was 35, Dede is a veteran Professional Triathlete, being a 3-time Ironman Champion and a 2-time 70.3 Champion. She is the 2016 12-hour Time Trial World Champion, where she set the course record of 258 miles, beating all of the men as well. She won Ultraman Florida in 2020 where she set an Ultraman World Record and she is the 2022 Ultraman World Champion where she set a course record by over 45 minutes.

It was an honour for Claire and I to interview her and former TRIBEathlon co-host, Laura Siddall, who crewed for Dede in her Ultraman win. I met Leon Chevalier when sat next to him on the flight back from Kona, Hawaii, after he had finished 7th in the Ironman World Championships (in a year where he had also completed his Masters in Chemical Engineering).

Leon has been racing long distance triathlons across the world since 2021, and has already won Ironman Mallorca and Embrunman, came 3rd at Ironman UK and rose from 420th to 22nd in the PTO World Rankings.

He is most definitely one to watch among the rising stars of the long course, so Claire and I wanted to chat to him about the incredible start to his professional career, what Chemical Engineering can teach us in triathlon, the unexpected pressures of turning pro and how he can use the sport to create positive change in the world.

Over the last 20 years, most of us have been waking up to Louise Minchin's bubbly enthusiasm delivered from the BBC Breakfast red sofa a few mornings every week, but as well as being one of the show's key anchors prior to her stepping down, latterly with Dan Walker, she is also a triathlon fanatic.

Rediscovering her love of sport whilst on a BBC challenge in the Velodrome, she has gone on to represent her country at triathlon, as well as completing some of the worlds toughest extreme triathlons. She currently finds herself in the middle of I'm a Celebrity, Get me Out of Here, but prior to her entering the castle, I wanted to find out about how she got into triathlon, how she managed deal with the nerves in the early days and then go on to represent Team GB at the sport. I also wanted to find out more about her having to judge the mood of the nation from the red sofa, as well as understand what comes next for her.

Ultra runner, Anna Troup, overcame hideous weather, injury and sickness to set a new female record time on the iconic 268-mile Pennine Way this year, only weeks after triumphing as the fastest female in the Lakeland 100 and less than two months since she won and set a new women’s course record for the Summer Spine Race 2021 in 80 hours and 28 minutes.

2021 has been an incredible year for a woman in her 50s that, by her own admission, came to ultra-running later in life. As well as this year’s race successes, she won the Lakeland 100 two years ago and had other wins in the Arc of Attrition 100, the Wendover Woods 100, and the Exodus 100, so I wanted to learn more about the secrets to successful endurance training in your 50s, about the best equipment for ultra-running and how you can fuel your race on scones and marmalade sandwiches!

After graduating in 2000, Meredith Kessler used her graduation money to purchase her first triathlon bike and entered in a full Ironman two weeks later. From that moment on, she caught the spirit of Ironman competition and has not looked back.

Since that first Ironman in 2000, Meredith has completed 70 full Ironman races all over the United States and the rest of the world and she is an 11-time full distance Ironman and 23-time half-distance Ironman champion.

I wanted to get to know how Meredith raced on average 7 Ironmans a year, was back racing the full distance just 5 months after giving birth to son, Mak, how she uses Chi swims to meditate and how getting Corona Virus and the vaccine has impacted her performance.

Sophie Grant is an ultrarunner who has finished in the top 10 at UTMB, Lavaredo, TransGranCanaria, La Diagonale les Fous and the MDS, to name just a few. What is interesting about Sophie is that she only started running in her 30s to lose some weight, and now is one of the top runners on the circuit and when she began to struggle to deal with the stress of holding down a job whilst training for races, she flipped normal life on its head, and for the last few years has lived out of a camper van travelling Europe, whilst flying back into the UK sporadically to work.

In this interview, I wanted to understand how she went from beginner to top ultrarunner, how living in a camper van has changed her perspective, how women in ultrarunning still suffer from sexist torments and strategies in races around the world.

Robbie Britton has some incredible achievements under his belt, with highlights such as a 2:29 marathon and a 261km 24hr best, which earned a World & European bronze medal. However, it is his adventures in search of fastest known times (FKTs) that intrigue me the most. Whether it's crossing Iceland, completing the Kom-Emine in Bulgaria, setting an FKT on the 650km Jordan Trail (all on foot or 1100km on a bicycle), the next adventure is never far away.

Two days before the 2017 Ironman World Championships in Kona, Tim Don was hit by a car whilst riding along the Queen K Highway and suffered a hangman's fracture to his neck. He spent 3 months recovering in a Halo Brace, which was documented brilliantly in 'The Man with the Halo'.

So, as one of Britain's most successful triathletes, and someone that has played a huge part of the sports rise to popularity, I wanted to learn more about his recovery from injury, his approach to goal setting and what's next for The Don!

In the first episode of the podcast with my new co-host, pro Ironman athlete, Laura Siddall, we speak to Dr Emma Ross, Head of Physiology at the English Institute of Sport, helping Team GB finish second in the medal table at the Rio Olympics.

Dr Emma Ross led a ground-breaking campaign to improve support of female athletes within the high performance system. Through the SmartHER programme she worked to empower coaches, athletes and sports practitioners to better understand the exercising female, and how to capitalise and cope with her physiology and psychology in the context of sport. She is on a mission to tackle the taboos that exist within sport and within wider society when it comes to women’s health; topics such as periods and the menstrual cycle, breast health, pelvic floor health and mental health.

Thankfully, I had previous guest of the podcast and performance coach, Laura Penhaul, on hand to make sure I was asking the right questions in a subject that was definitely out of my comfort zone.

Helen Davis is an accomplished swimmer and sports psychologist and is renowned for working with some accomplished athletes - particularly, former Ironman pro, Lucy Gossage. Based on the success Helen's approach brought to Lucy, together they created IRON-MIND, and online learning platform for helping you get the best out of your training and your races by having the right mindset.

Having been through the IRON-MIND myself, it gives you a brilliant guide on how to address those limiting and irrational beliefs and helps you to focus on what will bring you the greatest success, whether that is to compete or complete.

I wanted to explore these ideas more with Helen, as well as talk to her about her complete career change in her 40s; retraining and switching from teaching to sport psychology.

I recently read 'The lost art of Running' by Shane Benzie and it is one of the best running books I've ever read. Not surprising really, as this it's written by the running coach of Damian Hall and Nicky Spinks, to name a couple.

The combination of technique and stories from runners around the world makes for compelling and productive reading. So I wanted to get Shane onto the TRIBEathlon podcast to learn more about how we can all improve our running technique and performance, and start to run more like the Kenyans!

When it comes to endurance sport, for most people an Ironman is a pretty big challenge; so imagine trying to do 20 times that distance all in one go! Known as a 'double deca', anyone that does a 48 mile swim, then a 2240 mile ride followed up with a 520 mile run, should definitely have the word brutal in their mindset; and Brutal Claire has it in her name too.

Not only does Brutal Claire compete in brutal endurance events, she organises them too, so in this episode I got the opportunity to chat to Claire about how and why she does such gruelling and difficult events.
