On today’s episode, Larry chats with his longtime friend, San Francisco Giants legendary broadcast and 13-time Emmy Award winner, Duane Kuiper. This podcast highlights Duane’s journey from growing up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin to dreaming of someday becoming a Major League Baseball player. Duane shares what a blessing it was to be traded from the Cleveland Indians to the San Francisco Giants, including a funny story about how he once tried to block the trade. The conversation continues as Duane reflects on how he transitioned from player to broadcaster in a single weekend— a rare path, as only a handful of play-by-play broadcasters are former players. Larry also shares with the audience that Duane has been nominated five times for Baseball’s Hall of Fame as a broadcaster, a recognition long overdue. They close out the conversation by discussing many ways Duane has supported and engaged with community-focused programs throughout his more than four decades with the Giants organization.

Alyssa is a firm believer, that so many life skills can be learned on a baseball field where 30,000 kids can play for free thanks to this program. Larry and Chris start off by discussing Chris’ lifelong passion for education. While an undergrad student at Stanford, he felt drawn to the East Palo Alto community. He first started his outreach there by running an afterschool program called Shoot for the Stars. This passion increased and led Chris to founding Eastside College Preparatory. What first started with 9 students on a park bench has grown into an over 5-acre campus with state-of-the-art school facilities, resources, and on-campus dorms for students. Larry and Chris end the conversation by reflecting on a decade’s long partnership between the Good Tidings Foundation and Eastside Prep and how they plan to continue partnering in the future.

As a student, athlete, member of larger franchises, and now leader at the University of San Francisco, Jennifer has long felt the urge to give of herself, and through investment in the hope-giving STEAM program at Rosa Parks Elementary School, to efforts to uplift Marin City and provide it with a gym as a community hub, to running a basketball clinic at the White House, Jennifer has taken countless steps to foster justice and equity in her community, encourage girls and women to dream about options open to them, and intentionally brought fellow collaborators alongside of her in the process.
