Having A Night is a podcast dedicated to reviving the lost art of the dinner party. Sophie von Haselberg and Ariana Venturi are obsessed with both the micro and the macro of the all-important question: how to throw the absolute, supreme, no holds barred, remember-it-forever-unless-you-were-too-drunk dinner party.
At last, Having A Night: Wedding Season comes to a close. Ari still isn't married, but at least she has a venue and a date, if not a dress and a jazz trio. This season, the girls dug into the crevices of the Wedding Industrial Complex and somehow emerged unscathed. They parsed first dances and after parties, dessert tables and tiered cakes, fairy lights and candles, placement and free-for-alls. In this final episode, Sophie lays to rest the weddings Ari could have had, and Ari offers the best advice of the season: the whole point is to enjoy the process. Otherwise, why bother? The girls have talked and talked and then talked some more, but we hope the only thing you've really taken away from our judgmental blathering is that there is always room to do things your own way, even though wedding planners, magazines, and your friends' (or celebrity) weddings are telling you otherwise. You're putting on a show, hunnies. Make the most of it. XOXO! See you next season, Ari & Sophie Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
CAKE SMACKDOWN: Design vs. Taste! We're putting all our money on TASTE, the clear frontrunner in this prize fight. Who wants a beautiful cake with no flavor? If you fondant fonDO… step aside. We’ve all seen “Shallow Hal” (shame on us, millennials)! We want our cake to TASTE like Gwyneth, no matter what she LOOKS like! Dear Tony Robins: please hypnotize all brides to see beneath the fondant! Also in this episode: Sophie plans Ari’s engagement party PLUS why pie is is always the wrong choice. You've survived it all -- the endless toasts, the crack-of-dawn hair & makeup shift, the mic feedback during the ceremony... You grazed the floor with your butt during SHOUT and cried during the first dance even though the band sucked. You ate three pieces of cake, two bottles of wine, and zero water. The wedding is over, right? You've done your part and then some? WRONG. You better get your ass into gear because after the party is the after party and only then can you hit the hotel lobby. But don't pass out for too long because in the AM, you know have to get your booty to the chafing-dish derby, aka the wedding brunch. Don't get us started on the phrase "rehash the bash", just give us the actual hash...browns. This ep is about the optional wedding add-ons, aka the After Party and the Brunch, and boy have we got some opinions. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
If music be the food of love, then you better pump the jams and play something great at your wedding. The DJ/Band dispute is a tale as old as time and both girls want to rock DJ. Now that that's settled, does an electric violin kill the vibe or electrify the dancefloor? And where is the string quartet in all of this? Can't we just let strings be strings instead of warping them into an Ed Sheeran arrangement? Has the Dirty Dancing jump surpassed iconic and gone straight to cheugy, or is it really the time of your life? These answers, and more, in this episode of NOW That's What I Call Music: The Having A Night Wedding Edition. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The girls may not be location scouts but they sure do have opinions on where you should have your wedding. Vibe is paramount. Finding a new way to say 'vibe' is also paramount. Vibes unearthed during this hour-long convo include the cheugy farm vibe, the sterile loft vibe, and the Stepford country club vibe. Obviously, the correct answer to where you're getting married is D, None of the above. Ari unloads and downloads about the venue currently in her top position and Sophie lends an excited yet sympathetic ear while somehow managing to stay negative about weddings generally. XOXO! The HAN girls. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Speeches. Toasts. Roasts. The best man thinks he’s headlining The Comedy Cellar. Your dad has been speaking off-the-cuff for 45 minutes. 6 sorority sisters, 1 mic. And everyone’s opening line begins with “FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON’T KNOW ME.” We're issuing a trigger warning for everyone who's ever roasted, toasted, speeched, or been speeched. Consider yourself warned. XOXO! Ari & Sophie Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
What better way to celebrate your wedding than playing a massive game of WHO WORE IT BEST with all your closest friends!? Last week's episode covered bachelorettes, and that means this week, it's the Bridal Party... which, when you really think about it, is just a big ol' horse and pony show. Who's got the best updo? Beach waves? Best strap situation? Most inoffensive walking pace? Ladies, it's time to parade your girlfriends for all to see! In $700 single-use, jewel-toned polyester, no less! Are Bridal Parties the most obvious marker of Le Basic Bitch Wedding? Do not listen to this episode if your answer is NO. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
After a long, unannounced hiatus, the girls are now COVID-free and ready to dive into the Bachelor/Bachelorette Party, which has recently swelled from simple "party" into the bachelor/bachelorette three-day-weekend. It's hard to say exactly when this shift occurred, but it was probably around the same time as the emergence of the welcomed-by-some, dreaded-by-most Four Day Wedding Weekend. The Stag-do/Hen-do can be an opportunity for a bacchanal (THE PURGE, but sexy?) or an opportunity to spend QT with the pals you loved most. Sophie and Ari are on opposite sides here, but the one thing they agree on? For the love of god, you DON'T have to mix friend groups -- if they haven't become close since first meeting, it's probably because they don't like each other very much. SAHRRY FOR BURSTIN UR BUBBLE, PALS! Ok that's all -- listen and love and like and subscribe. XOXO! The HAN girls. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The girls heard your pleas for a wedding planner, and have arrived with the ultimate answer: Ryan Hill, the head honcho and owner of Apotheosis Events. If your image of a "wedding planner" is the-gal-in-the-black-dress-looking-miffed-while-she-screams-into-her-headset, Ryan is about to turn that idea upside-down. Vivacious, kind, and hysterical, he sees his role as part Stage Manager, part Producer, and part Therapist, and coming from a Broadway background, theatricality is front-and-center at every event. In this ep, he answers all-important questions, like "how many minutes of fireworks is too many minutes of fireworks?" and "wait, a wedding cake costs HOW MUCH!?" Suffice to say, the gals feel immeasurably wiser after this scintillating convo. Thanks to Ryan for taking time out of his deservedly busy schedule to talk to us, and to Nick Westrate for knowing he'd be the perfect match. Learn more about your ad choices. Thanksgiving rolls around but once a year, and the girls could not be more amped that it's making its presence known in the form of PUMPKIN. From here on out, it's nothing but spiked cider and holiday parties. In spite of a minor argument over cranberry sauce, Ari & Sophie are on the same page: sticklers for the absolute classics. Why screw around with what's already perfect? They wax on about their Thanksgiving hopes and dreams, PLUS -- don't worry, Season 4 is still Wedding Season. The girls go to town recapping an absolutely chic city wedding and settle the matter of theater in the round and its nuptial role. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Who's coming & who's getting snubbed? Is it mandatory to invite everyone whose wedding you've been invited to? And is there ever a good way to say "O HELL NO" to the request for a +1? In this episode, the girls get down and dirty with the A List, the B List, and the zzz list. (Don't invite any snoozers to your wedding, ya hear?) Learn more about your ad choices. Cocktail attire? Black Tie? Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. For Ari and Sophie, w-e-d-d-i-n-g spells COSTUME PARTY. A chance to steal the attention from the bride with an absolutely smashing outfit (mostly joking here, folks, not to worry.) We're talking Hoedown Chic, Playful Hawaiian, and Creative Formal. Yes, the girls are positively gagging for specificity when it comes to dress code. Adjectives abound -- are you a Colorful or a Festive? Oh, and speaking of, whatever happened to hats? Name your top 5 wedding canapés and prepare for war. This week the girls are unloading all their wedding-food gripes (BEFORE the professional guests get the mic). What is it about synchronized servers that turns you on? If salmon and chicken were a real-life DUET.... who would be on piano? But actually WHY is wedding food so sucky??????!!! Is it the formality? The fillet? Both? Touché. Buckle up folks, you're in for some big opinions about chicken satay. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

You know her voice, you know her taste, you know she goes heavy on the mayo.... But do you really know the woman we all listen to, laugh with, and love every week, aka The Jewish Italian American Princess herself, Ariana Venturi? This is the EXPOSE you've been waiting for, the tell-all interview with journalist S'Oprah von Haselberg. From the childhood nostalgia of her culinary heroes to piercing insights like "if chicken is on the grill, there has to be sausage on the grill, too", this is an episode you won't want to miss. Delve deep into her psyche as these two brainiacs discuss entertaining as actors and entertaining as hostesses, aka entertaining vs. entertaining. Annie Favia is the brain, heart, and soul behind Favia Wines and Erda Teas. Though born in Connecticut, she's the NorCal gal of our dreams— a viticulturist with an obvious green thumb, a deep respect for nature and how it sustains us, and the sunny, engaging disposition of someone who knows her shit but isn't about to lord it over you. Can you tell we fell in love with her over the course of our conversation? In this episode, we go deep on Cabernet Franc, what drew Annie to wine, how she got into growing her own herbs for teas, and how she likes to host at home. Predictably, we invited ourselves over for dinner as soon as we get our cross-country road trip under way. We know a dinner at her place would be one to remember. Learn more about your ad choices. What were you doing in your early 20s? Starting a restaurant empire with nothing more than a BFA and a song? Yeah. That's what we thought. Renee Erickson is the kind of chef/restauranteur/cookbook author/fearless woman that dreams are made of. Owner of multiple –and most would say, the best– food destinations in Seattle, including The Walrus and the Carpenter, The Whale Wins, Bar Mesuline, Bateau, and General Porpoise Doughnuts and Coffee; possessor of a James Beard Award and two time cookbook author, Erickson has approached her glorious career not with her eyes locked on the prize, but rather with a bravery and open-heart that has made her food and restaurants the uniquely delicious places they are today. On this episode we're talking Washington wine, whipped butter, and why you should never feel shame about kicking your friends out of your goddamn kitchen. Her new cookbook, 'Getaway: Food & Dink to Transport You' is filled with the stories and recipes we all need coming out of the past 14 months of Covid hell. Listen now! Ian Cauble is the wine guy you want to have in your ear. And by "wine guy" we mean just one of 269 Master Sommeliers in the WORLD, and the recipient of the Best Young Sommelier in the World and TOPSOMM awards. If you saw the documentary SOMM, you know exactly who we're talking about. (Blonde. Lots of flash cards. Passionate as hell.... Is that ringing a bell? ) And if you didn't, then please stop reading and turn on your television immediately. Not only is Ian knowledgeable beyond imagination about every aspect of wines, he's also willing and eager to share that knowledge, evidenced in his venture SOMM SELECT. It's like a local wine store if your local wine store was manned by one of the greatest somms in the world. Sounds pretty groovy, right? You may recognize Sheldon as the chill dude from Hawaii who was voted Fan Favorite on not one but two seasons of Top Chef. But he's also part of a brigade of chefs shining light on Hawaiian cuisine and gently insisting that it be given its due. His new book, COOK REAL HAWAII goes way beyond poke and Kalua pig, and delves into the people and cultures that make Hawaiian food such a unique fusion. After all, where else but on the world's most isolated land mass can you get Polynesian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, AND Portuguese influences? Talking to Sheldon was like talking to a pure ray of sunshine -- a very knowledgeable ray of sunshine, that is. We know you've had fried chicken. Maybe you even love to douse your crunchy bird in hot sauce. But that is NOTHING compared to what Kim Prince is doing at her LA restaurant, Hotville Chicken. Born into the family that invented Nashville Hot Chicken, she is carrying on the Prince tradition, bringing their famous (and, naturally, secret) recipe to the West Coast. Just how hot are we talking? Let's put it this way: one of the heat levels is called TOE TAG. As in... You're probably leaving in a body bag if you finish a whole order. We had such a blast talking to Kim Prince, and as you'll hear, we also got VERY hungry. Her menu doesn't stop with chicken -- we're talking sweet teas, smoked mac & cheese, and.... Sorry, we lost our train of thought because we were salivating! The point is, Kim is an absolute legend -- hilarious, honest, and an absolute font of knowledge. "Psssst, do you party?" asks Meghan McNeer on the homepage of one(!) of her marvelously curated party companies, Standard Party Supply. We've never loved a question more. After years working as an editor at beloved design mag Domino, McNeer started Standard Party Supply and Project Bon Vivant, two dinner party-centric companies dedicated to maximum FUN. Sheila Marikar is a prolific journalist whose work is featured in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Forbes, and tons more. She describes herself as a generalist, but when we say this woman knows her way around food and wine, we aren't kidding! We are generally under the impression that we have pretty good knowledge when it comes to food & drink, but Sheila absolutely schooled us! And truly -- that's the joy of getting to host this podcast. We delve into whether there is a right way to drink tequila, the treatment of Indian cuisine in the States, and how to host a Zoom dinner party that feels fun and not like an absolute drag. As our first proper mixologist on the show, we are thrilled to have gotten to pick Eamon's brain about all things alcoholic, non-alcoholic, and everything in-between. She's our icon in more ways than one, and that's putting it mildly. On this, the maiden episode of 2021, we dive into food, sex, and the things we hope never to be confronted with on a date. Spoiler Alert: Soylent is still a dealbreaker. Here's to a lot more food, a lot more dates, and a lot more sex in the new year! XOXO Ari & Sophie Learn more about your ad choices. Well, it’s the greatest day of 2020! The one where we get to say goodbye to this absolute misery of a year. Most years, we would be crowing about what we’ll be drinking, eating, and wearing tonight, but this year, it’s probably lights out by 9:45. And that’s perfectly ok, because HELLO 2021! (Let’s hope this isn’t like a scene in a horror movie where things just go further downhill from here...) This ep is all about what we hope will be BIG in the upcoming year— and as the consummate trend forecasters that we are, we hope we’re right. Most notably: nonstop dinner parties. POST VACCINE, that is. Stay safe one and all, and enjoy your teeny tiny New Years celebrations! We love you— thanks for making this year a hell of a lot better than it could have been. You probably already know Andy Baraghani from his recipes at Bon Appetit, his well-documented skincare regimen, and the multitude of videos out there on the world wide web. So yeah, he needs no introduction except to say that we could not have been more excited to have this triple-threat on the show! Triple threat, you may ask? YES! He mortars, he pestles, he... Ok fine, double threat. Join us for this extra special, frothy holiday episode, featuring: what Andy's holidays would look like this year if we were allowed to gather. Plus, holiday cookies, spice blends, and much, much more. There's a salad recipe in this ep that might make your jaw drop. This week, Sophie and Ari are joined by friend of the show Zenzi Williams. Performer, voice-actor, and vegan home-cook, Zenzi has been developing the most gorgeous plant-based recipes we've ever seen on Instagram. With Covid upending the livelihood of so many artists, Zenzi found a new way to focus her creative energy and spread joy, food!!! Much like her work on stage and screen, these recipes are like a ray of sunshine for our bodies, our eyes, our souls...not to mention the preservation of the planet. On this episode, we're talking not only about how to embrace a plant-based diet, but how to turn roadblocks into opportunities and find joy through the act of sharing. You can find Zenzi and her delicious recipes on Instagram @zen_will. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
F*ck diamonds. Olive oil is a girl's best friend! Hippocrates called it "the great healer" and Homer called it "liquid gold." There are few things in this world that are as delicious as they are healthful– hell, it's even a beauty product! But with a reputation like that, why is so much olive oil… dare we say…. utter CRAP? Enter Aishwarya Iyer. Sick of literally getting SICK from consuming bad E.V.O.O (it can happen people! Beware!), she set out to make her own with the freshest olives in California and restore the glory of liquid gold... and thus, Brightland was born. This week, we're going deep into the importance of high-quality olive oil for both your body AND pantry. And fair warning: there are a lot of delicious recipes involved.

It's Thanksgiving, and it's also 2020. Those two things probably cancel each other out, right? Which is why we can only muster the energy to talk about STUFFING. You don't even need teeth to eat it! It's easy beyond belief (throw a few things in a bowl, douse with broth, and shove it in the oven? YES. CAN.) PLUS.... it's goddamned delicious. In our opinion, it should no longer be confined to one holiday. Set Stuffing Free! Wait, we mean Dressing! (This just in: there's a difference. And yes, we will explain it in the episode.)
If you're having a Thanksgiving for one this year, might we recommend rustling up a little stuffing as a side dish? It'll warm your heart and soul. (And turkey is boring anyway.)
While we are all for stuffing, creamed spinach, and a potato of any shape and size, celebrating a holiday that is built on a myth about the "founding" of America -- a myth that glosses over the mass murder of the Native peoples of this country -- is not ok. So perhaps a way to give thanks to this earth and to think about what this holiday actually stands for, is to cook and get familiar with indigenous ingredients and Native recipes; there is a whole world to discover. We are hoping that our next Thanksgiving (you know, the one where we get to be with friends and family again?) will be a menu focusing on Native American recipes so we can delve into these incredibly rich culinary traditions.

You may already know Dan Pelosi by his alter ego, Grossy Pelosi, the cutie patootie bringing you Italian-American classics from the chicest Brooklyn kitchen. Ok, that's a lot of flattering words for one sentence, but we can't help it! He's divine.
We had couched this episode as "fall pastas", but delved into so much more -- the perfect vodka sauce, the famous Bimpy, and how to turn a passion into a full-time job. (Well, he's also a creative director, so make that TWO full-time jobs!) So get cozy with your bowl of spaghetti, pour a glass of Chianti, and let the words of this Italian-American prince wash over you.

Having A Night and being kind to the earth do not need to be mutually exclusive, and this episode is chock full of helpful tips, tricks, and best green advice podcasts can buy (which is to say, free ninety nine!) We're covering everything from the grocery store to the end of the party: how to shop greener, preserve those leftovers, and clean greener and with fewer chemicals. There are few things more satisfying in these dark, dark times than sharing dinner with those you love, let's make the earth a better place while we're at it!

Hunger has no name, religion, creed, or color, yet it is all around us, both seen and unseen. This week we talk to Selma Raven and Sara Allen, the women behind one of the Community Fridges that have begun cropping up around New York City. Community Fridges are a mutual aid movement built out of the startlingly simple idea that everyone should have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and that food should NEVER be going to waste when there are hungry people. It is food justice incarnate.
We were elated to get to speak with Selma and Sara, and to be spreading awareness about this -- a movement that is not built on the idea of "charity", which carries with it an inherent us-vs-them mentality, but rather on the idea that we all go through trying times and therefore need to care for one another. Now more than ever.

Douglas Little is king of the goth, Edwardian, rock-and-roll aesthetic. Didn't know that was a thing? Well, look him up and you'll see why it is. And you'll understand exactly why he is the man to talk about making Halloween not just spooky, but also sexy. He did sleep in a coffin for two years as a teenager, after all.
For years, he's been one of the creative forces behind New York Restoration Project's annual fundraiser, Hulaween, so he knows a thing or two about eco-friendly table decor and making a space special, no matter the size. But not only does Douglas have a one-of-a-kind eye, he also has a one-of-a-kind NOSE -- he's the mastermind behind Heretic Perfumes, an all-natural perfume line most notorious for creating GOOP's "This Smells Like My Vagina" Candle. (Yes, we would have bought if it if weren't perpetually sold out.)
We talk about using essential oils in recipes, the perfect Halloween blend of spooky/silly/sexy, and adventures in tempering chocolate. Halloween is nearly here, and this is all about making it more fun than ever, even if you're planning a party for one. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
It's been 7 months of face masks, no parties, and being terrified of other people. And the girls just can't take it anymore! So they're planning a fantasy Season 3 Premiere party. Yes, it's fake. But that doesn't make it any less fun! OK fine, it's SLIGHTLY less fun than an actual party with other people, but with zero budgetary constraints and zero COVID constraints, imaginations can run wild!
Silk face masks embroidered with "Having A Night Night"? Check! 85 people playing a rousing game of Truth or Dare? Check! A fountain of chips? We don't even know how this would work, but double, triple, QUADRUPLE check!

This week the girls had the privilege of interviewing culinary ambassador Pierre Thiam. Born in Senegal, Thiam is a New York City- based chef, restaurateur, author, and entrepreneur who has worked to bring the flavors and culinary traditions of West Africa to the rest of the world, and whose career runs the gamut between hospitality and social justice. His company Yolélé Foods advocates for smallholder farmers in the Sahel by opening new markets for crops grown in Africa; its signature product, Yolélé Fonio, is now available at retailers across America. It is also extremely delicious and, as Thiam says, easier to pronounce than quinoa :). Join us as we talk about the importance of sharing food with both loved ones and strangers.

You asked for a chocolate episode, and boy have we got the goods for you! Meet Maury Rubin, the man behind the most renowned hot chocolate in New York City, the legend behind the mythical and beloved City Bakery. The girls discuss Marshmallow technique (who knew there were no egg whites in marshmallows!), the importance of aerating your hot chocolate, and the ever-changing landscape of retail in New York City.
To all those who loved City Bakery, this was the beautiful note left in the window the week it closed: “It’s true. City Bakery has closed. What a time. What a world this was. What a loss. A loss for all of us. We’ll miss this forever. Thank you New York.”
We still miss it constantly, but are overjoyed to have gotten to spend some time talking to Maury, shopkeeper and baker extraordinaire.
