This morning we are finishing a short series on MONEY. Two weeks ago, we looked at 2 Peter 3 for the reminder that Jesus is coming back, which shapes how we view money. Last Sunday we looked at 2 Corinthians 8 about the Macedonian people who were overwhelmed by God’s grace in their life, so that they were begging to help followers of Jesus in Jerusalem. Today we see the Apostle Paul is inviting the Macedonian people and the Corinthian people to serve followers of Jesus in Jerusalem, because we’re all the body of Christ

This morning we are going to launch into a 3-week series on “MONEY” and we are talking about the subject of money because money is important of life. Money is one of those areas of life that is very subjective. For example, you always feel like other people have more money. In this room there is someone who has the most money but there is someone in Austin who has more money, someone in Texas, someone in the United States…It’s never ending! This morning we’re not going to really talk about money but instead talk about a passage that frames the whole conversation of money.

This morning we are in the middle of a short series on MONEY. Last Sunday we looked at 2 Peter 3 for the reminder that Jesus is coming back. The promise of Jesus’ return puts everything in perspective; especially money! Money is a huge part of our world. Money plays a huge part of our life. And almost every headline in the news today people are talking about money. Who hasn’t known someone or been someone to go through work lay-offs? Who hasn’t been shocked by rising prices?Who follows the stock market?

Have you noticed how rare it is to see people asking questions about the resurrection of Jesus from the dead? People debate about the division between church and state. People wrestle with questions what songs to sing on Sunday morning but the claim that Jesus resurrected from the dead just seems to be glazed over. Isn’t that interesting?

Up to this point we’ve talked about spiritual gifts in general; chapter 12. We’ve talked about the purpose of spiritual gifts; chapter 13. Last Sunday we talked about spiritual gifts in the worship service and this morning is a part of Scripture that most people skip on a Sunday morning. We’ve spent three Sundays on spiritual gifts, surely that’s enough, therefore, can’t we just skip to the resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15? But we don’t pick and choose what we talk about on Sunday morning. If you are new this morning, we teach God’s Word. We go verse by verse because we want to know God, even if those passages are a little difficult.

1 Corinthian is a letter written to a church in Corinth and based on the first 12 chapters we know the Corinthian argued about everything.

We think our culture today is divisive today but in the Corinthian church they were arguing about status, wealth, beliefs, marriage, sex, law, family and in chapter 13 they were using spiritual gifts to bring attention to themselves. At first glance we might be shocked the Corinthian church was using their spiritual gifts to bring attention to themselves but we have to remember Corinth was a booming city in their day.

We are going to continue in our series in 1 Corinthians and we are going to talk about the meaning and purpose of communion. Communion is a meal, a small meal, but cracker and juice is shared as we come forward and dip the piece of cracker in a glass of juice, so that I thought it would be fun to think about our favorite meal. It might be the family meal we celebrate at Christmas. It might be your favorite fast food place. It might be the best BBQ in Austin. In the early church, they didn’t do cracker and juice but they hosted a feast and as a result there were some in the Corinthian church who were enjoying the food and wine too much and there were some in the Corinthian church who were being completely overlooked, so that they didn’t get to celebrate communion at all.

This morning we are continuing through our series in 1 Corinthians and we are talking about idolatry. The word “idolatry” sounds like something people did in ancient history but sometimes as followers of Jesus we can take our faith in Jesus and blend it with the worship of other gods. This might sound confusing for us but we don’t tend to throw out Jesus 100%. Sometimes we can just add a worship of money, power, or acceptance from our friends to our worship of Jesus. When we do that the bible calls it idolatry.

Our passage this morning is going to speak to the damage of comparing ourselves to others. Have you noticed we can be rocking along in life, doing great, enjoying the Lord, hopeful about life and then we visit a friend who just got a new car, and now we hate our car. Now the only thing we can think about is why our car doesn’t have all these new cool features compared to that new car. The same things happen with where we live, where we go on vacation, marriage, children, people at different stages in life. Everything was going great until we talk to that one person and now all we can think about is how miserable we are in life. It’s because of comparison and that’s the main focus of our passage this morning.www.northvillagechurch.com

This morning we are going to see God’s Word speak to marriage. It’s possible you might have a negative view toward marriage. Our culture is trying to dismantle and devalue marriage, so it makes sense that you might be skeptical toward marriage. It’s possible, like myself, you saw horrible examples in marriage? Maybe you’ve been in or are in a marriage right now that is difficult, but my push back would be, “Maybe you’ve never seen a biblical view of marriage?”

In our passage this morning it gets real, because attending a worship service is easy. Being friendly with one another for an hour on a Sunday is easy but these people were doing life with one another and they were struggling to get along with one another, so much so that they are taking one another to court. Can you imagine that?

What do you do when you are in one of those conversations where someone says something that doesn’t sound right? It might be a political comment that is a little extreme. It might be a tone in how someone responds to a question. It might be a reference to something in Scripture that isn’t accurate. It might be a negative comment about a friend or family member. In our culture we kind of have a mixed signal in how we are supposed to respond to those moments. It used to be “love is love.” It’s not my place to say anything. Then we moved to silence is violence, so you have to say something. Now everyone is walking around on eggshells afraid to talk to anyone. In our passage this morning we are going to see a real-life example on how to navigate those types of conversations.Watch on YouTube

The first half of 1 Corinthians is essentially the Corinthians wondering if they should listen to what Paul has to say to them. Have you ever been in one of those contexts where people aren’t sure if they should listen to what you have to say? When we are speaking into people’s lives we aren’t speaking our agendas but we are simply pointing them to Jesus.Watch on YouTube

3/5/2023 - Felling stuck and lack of relational depth?

View Details

We don’t want to think of ourselves as foolish.  After all, most of us have been told our whole lives, “You can do anything you want!”  You can be anything you want as long as you believe in yourself and work hard”.  This is called the philosophy self-determination.  We love it!
Yet our health is breaking down.  Our schedules are inconsistent.  Our relationships are struggling.  Our career is unstable.  Our decisions in life aren’t unfolding as planned and we get frustrated.  As gently as possible God’s Word is saying to us this morning, “We’re not as capable as we think we are.”  We’re more fragile than we want to admit.  We’re more limited than we want to admit.

In the context of our passage we are going to see God’s Word reminding us of the cross and the reason is there is power in the message of the cross.  This morning God’s Word is going to show us there are two types of people in this room.  You are either the type of person who is convinced of the power in Jesus’ life, death and resurrection or you are convinced the cross is foolish.  You can’t be in both groups.  You can’t be in neither group.  You either see the cross as powerful or you see the cross as foolish.

Last Sunday we kicked off our new series in 1 Corinthians and learned about the messiness of the Corinthian church. We learned about a people who have inconsistent beliefs, inconsistent behaviors. In a day like today, when people are arguing, criticizing and sometimes cutting people out of their lives because of beliefs and behaviors.

This morning we are going to continue in 1 Corinthians and look at division in the local church.  Sometimes people in Christ struggle to get along with one another and God’s Word meets us in the practical areas of life.

Join us as we kick off a new series in 1 Corinthians about what it means to be a healthy church because in the context of the Corinthian church they are a mess.

In chapter 5 we have a man sleeping with his step-mother.  In chapter 6 we have church family members taking one another to court.  In chapter 11 they are getting drunk off communion.  In chapter 15 there are people denying the resurrection of Jesus.  This doesn’t even touch on the in-fighting within the local church.  The arrogance of the Corinthians.  The lack of love and compassion toward others and the Corinthian catch phrase, “Let us eat, drink and be merry because tomorrow we die!”  Could you imagine how you might respond if these types of people showed up in your newsfeed?  Can you imagine the types of things we might type in the comments section?  Can you imagine how we might respond to those types of people if they walked in on a Sunday morning or showed up in our community group?

Relationships take work. This is why our church is rallying around the focus “Build and Belong.”  We want to put in the relational time today, so that when we start go sideways in life, when we get ensnared by the sinful traps of this world we need people in our life that we can trust to help us get free.

We are busy with work, busy with life, struggling through marriage, wrestling with children, seeing our own personal character flaws in life, so that when we show up on a Sunday morning or even open God’s Word on our own it’s like God’s voice was just getting lost in all the white noise of life.

As a result, we started a tradition where every year in January we set aside time to focus on the four foundational markers, guardrails, lighthouses, key areas of life that guide the decisions we make, no matter how rough the waters might get in life.

The passage we are going to talk about is actually about circumcision, the removal of flesh from the male private parts, but at the heart of our passage is a conversation about where we find our confidence in life.

Perhaps there are some of us who find our confidence in our physical appearance?  Perhaps we get to a point where we can lift a certain number of weights?  Perhaps we can get to that number on the scale?  Perhaps we can run that distance, but sometimes our physical appearance can give us a level of confidence?

Maybe for some it is our title at work in Austin?  It is our GPA.  It is our educational background, so that our accomplishments give us a level of confidence.  Perhaps for some it is our economic stability?  It wasn’t that long ago that we felt like our economy was so strong, our house values were going up, gas prices were going down, and we felt so confident but quickly all of that seems to be fading.

This morning we are going to talk about obedience to God’s Word. In some ways, we think being an adult means nobody tells you what to do anymore. Then, we get job, we get a boss telling us what to do, and then we think, “I want to own my own business so I can be the boss and get to do what I want to do.”

But it never ends. The government tells us what to do. The city of Austin tells us what to do as a church in Austin. Law enforcement tells us what to do, and then we come to God’s Word and we see God’s Word telling us what to do, so sometimes our natural push back on obedience to God’s Word can be resistance. But this is why we study God’s Word so we can have a biblical understanding obedience, so that this morning we will see three sub-points;

  1. Work Out.

  2. Without.

  3. Poured Out.

In this weeks sermon pastor Michael Dennis walks us through Philippians 1:27-30. We look at 3 main takeaways from the message:

Stand Firm (vs 27)

Spunk (vs 28)

Suffering (vs 29-30)

Summary:

Our immediate thought on life is that God’s role in our life is to protect us from suffering, opposition, hardship but verse 29 is teaching that our suffering in life is a gift of God’s grace in our life. How’s that possible? It’s because the God of Scripture knows our hearts and minds will easily latch on to the sparkly things of this world that will not last. We don’t just love romance; we give up everything for romance. We don’t just love our careers we become workacholic. We don’t just love our hobbies, we become obsessive. We don’t just eat food, we become gluttonous. Our hearts and minds will latch on to the things of this world and they won’t last, and the Lord knows they won’t last. We know they won’t last. Relationships come and go. Careers come and go. Hobbies are great until we get old and our bodies fade, our minds fade. The economy is up and down. The politicians are hit and miss. The things of this world are fleeting, and the Lord knows the things of this world are fleeting.

Therefore, the God of Scripture, the creator of all things will absolutely bring the gift of suffering into our life, not because He hates us, but because He loves us and He wants to show us that He is the only part of life that we can hold on to for eternity, therefore, the Apostle Paul writes, “29 For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake.”
