I am so excited to have the lovely Hannah Anderson back on the podcast for episode 124! Hannah joined us previously on episode 39 where she shared more about her professional dance journey and backstory. Hannah is currently the director of Earthen Image Movement, and she is currently producing a collaborative dance concert entitled “For the Beauty of the Earth.”
In this conversation, Hannah reflects on the creative process, her personal journey of learning to acknowledge her limitations, and how our dependence on God invites us into a deeper relationship with Him. She also discusses the purpose of art and how it can be a means of healing and connection for both the artist and the audience. I am so grateful to have Shannon Dooling-Cain joining me for episode 123! Shannon is a dance educator, choreographer, writer, and founder of The Holistic Dance Teacher. She combines her love of writing with her love for the dance community in her work with The Holistic Dance Teacher. Through her blog, resource collection, and in-person events, Shannon helps dancers, choreographers, and dance teachers elevate their dance life and find more joy in the dance studio. I also love how her approach helps students grow not only in dance technique and artistry, but also in their overall well-being through social and emotional learning.
Shannon and I definitely have a similar heartbeat in wanting to foster a positive classroom environment and recognizing the power of a teacher to create that community. We talk about Shannon’s work as a teacher, choreographer, and also her time working with the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO), where she was involved in research, advocacy, and writing.
One of my favorite parts of our conversation is when Shannon shares about the importance of prioritizing ourselves as educators. The tendency is to give and give and give, and then end up in a place of burnout. She gives practical wisdom on discernment and prioritizing both our own and our students’ well-being. I’m honored to be joined by mentor and friend, Anthony Gurley, for episode 120. Anthony spent thirty years at his alma mater, Guilford College, as the Director of Financial Aid, retiring in 2009. He recently published his first book, Deadly Dilemma: A Memoir. I originally met Anthony through a scholarship and mentorship program he founded called Mo-T-Vation Ministry.
Anthony would describe himself as just an ordinary guy with a story to tell, and I am so grateful that he has recorded his story in his new memoir. In Deadly Dilemma, Anthony unsparingly opens the doors to his journey in the hope that others might find a path to confronting their struggles and failures, and in the process, discover their life-saving answers to that bigger question. Are those moments of victory and success, happiness and joy, and peaks of cherishable memories sufficient in number, scope, magnitude, and frequency to outweigh the valleys of failure, disappointments, fear, and isolation, that often color the landscape of life?

Gabe is a former college football athlete, has worked as as civil engineer and government policy strategist, has appeared on multiple television platforms such as NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior,” Netflix’s “The Ultimate Beastmaster,” & “The Bachelor: Listen To Your Heart”, and is currently living in Nashville and working on a variety of collaborative projects as a musician, singer-songwriter, and storyteller.

What is the impact of the arts around the world? During this mini-series, we are diving into conversations focused on the global impact of the arts. I am honored to have Keith and Kathy Thibodeaux joining me for part eight of this series! Keith and Kathy are the Founders and Directors of Ballet Magnificat!, an arts organization dedicated to presenting the good news of Jesus Christ to the whole world.
Kathy was born in Memphis, TN, but trained and has lived in Jackson, MS, most of her life. She went on to become one of the first contracted dancers for the Jackson Ballet Company (Ballet Mississippi) under the direction of Thalia Mara, dancing as principal until 1986. In 1982, Kathy was awarded a silver medal for her performance at the II USA International Ballet Competition (IBC), where she premiered her solo piece, “We Shall Behold Him.” Her desire to use her God-given talent of dance to share her faith in Jesus Christ led Kathy to resign from Ballet Mississippi and found her own company, Ballet Magnificat!, in 1986.
Keith is the former child entertainer best known as “Little Ricky” on the I Love Lucy television series and Johnny Paul Jason on The Andy Griffith Show. He was a drummer for the rock band David and the Giants which later became a groundbreaking Christian rock band, with Keith becoming a Christian in 1974. Keith shares about the dramatic life transformation he experienced–from hitting rock bottom to discovering fullness of life in Jesus.
Together, Keith and Kathy have taken steps of faith, trusting God along their adventurous journey! Since founding Ballet Magnificat! in 1986, the organization has grown to include a Trainee Program, a School of the Arts, and most recently Ballet Magnificat! Brazil. I loved hearing about some of the pivotal moments for Keith and Kathy, lessons they’ve learned in leadership, and how God has sustained them over the years. We also chat about the impact of dance across cultures. Get ready to be inspired by their incredible journey of faith!

Chelsea serves on the global and regional arts faculty with the University of the Nations for Youth WIth A Mission (YWAM) and hosts the new dance and faith podcast called Dance & The Sacred.
Originally from New Mexico, USA, Chelsea currently lives in San José, Costa Rica, where she has been working to develop the University of the Nations’ undergraduate dance degree program with YWAM. Chelsea has 24 years of experience in choreography and performance, as well as 20 years teaching classes and workshops throughout the USA, Mexico, and Costa Rica.
In our conversation, Chelsea shares about her own eclectic dance journey and how she has seen God open doors time after time. We chat about seasons of change, sensing God’s guidance, and maintaining a posture of gratitude and wonder as artists. Jeremiah and Mona Enna are the Co-Founders of The Culture House in Kansas City. The Culture House is an award winning community arts organization succeeding in excellence, education, and social engagement. The Culture House includes The Culture House Academy of the Performing Arts with over 700 students, world-class dance company Störling Dance Theater is in residency at TCH, and their social outreach program, The STAR Program serves hundreds of incarcerated and at-risk children and youth each year. Störling Conservatory of the Arts, an accredited, college conservatory offering degrees in dance launched in 2021 with a vision to expand to theatre, music and visual art.
In our conversation, Jeremiah and Mona share some incredible stories from their journeys! We chat about how the arts have the ability to reach past language barriers, connect people, and create space for deeper conversations and relationships. Arts International collaborates with other ministries, churches, and artists to create spaces for people to encounter God and to build up the next generation of creatives. Edwin shares how a heart of worship and excellence in our craft are synergistic, the importance of community for artists, and the value of the arts in ministry. I loved getting to know both Karen and Ainsley and hearing their heart for community and mentorship in the dance studio setting. Karen has over 30 years of experience in both the pedagogical and artistic performance aspects of dance. She is recognized as an accomplished dance educator, founder, and director of Crossings Dance School, Director Emeritus of Corps Bara Dance Theatre, and advocate for the integration of dance science research and practice in the dance studio.
Ainsley is both the Studio Director and a Dance Instructor at Crossings Dance, is on Faculty at the Alberta Ballet School, and guest teaches throughout the Calgary dance community. She is also the Event Producer for Project Dance Calgary and on staff with Project Dance NYC. Karen and Ainsley share about their journeys with dance and the development and growth of Crossings Dance.
We chat about finding the balance of business and ministry with a faith-based dance studio, and the succession process as Karen and Ainsley are currently in a season of shifting leadership at Crossings Dance. Their values-driven approach is truly an inspiration, and I am so encouraged by their genuine love for their community!

I am honored to have David and Micah Gamboa from Elijah Rising joining me on the podcast for episode 109! Elijah Rising is a nationally-recognized anti-trafficking agency based in Houston, Texas. Micah and David share how they came to serve at Elijah Rising, and how they have seen God move in miraculous ways! This topic is serious and heart-wrenching, which is why I am so grateful for the work of Elijah Rising and individuals like Micah and David who are on the frontlines helping to combat the injustice.

This experience led David to learn more about the healing power of Jesus, lead healing services, and inspire others to have faith that God can heal, even when it looks impossible! My new friend, Maria McCain, joins me for episode 106! Maria is the Director of Dance at University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas. She received her degree in Communication Disorders from Louisiana State University and her Master of Fine Arts in Dance from Belhaven University. Maria shares about how her pursuits in life shifted as she witnessed the power of dance to speak about topics of faith through the language of movement. She took multiple steps of faith with God, which eventually led her to Houston.
In our conversation, Maria and I chat about developing as a leader, choreography, and how dance can act as a catalyst for unity in the Christian Church. I love Maria’s encouragement to artists to “have hope, and be bold.”

What a JOY to spend time with the lovely Sarah Matzke! Sarah describes herself as “a human that uses the studio as laboratory and movement as choreographic medium.” She is a professor of dance at Texas Christian University and The University of Texas at Dallas and teaches as a guest artist globally. Sarah is the co-founder of Aaron + Hur, a non-profit organization that equips leaders in developing countries to use somatic movement for healing and community reconstruction.

My friend Hannah (Ueckert) Schulte is back with her husband, Brandon Schulte! Hannah was our guest on Episode 59 of the podcast. My new friend Bekah Spurgeon joins me for episode 97! Bekah has such a beautiful presence, and I loved getting to know her through this conversation! Bekah is a choreographer, dance educator, and is the Founder and Director of Generation Movemeant (GenMove). GenMove is a dance mentorship program that exists to train, build, and equip girls in 6-12th grade to walk boldly with purpose for such a time as this. I love Bekah’s vision with GenMove–to combine training in versatile dance styles with character building, scripture study, and teaching foundational life skills.
In our conversation, Bekah shares about her background dancing professionally for the NBA as well as her time living in Los Angeles as a professional dance artist, where she performed with local dance companies, appeared on television, did commercial work for Sony, Nintendo Wii and more. You’ll also hear about how she and her husband traveled for a year as missionaries where she had some unexpected opportunities to use dance.
We chat about topics such as understanding identity, the concept of sabbath, and experiencing the presence of God in dance. Our guest for episode 96 is the lovely Julianna Rubio Slager! Julianna is the Co-founder, Artistic Director, and Resident Choreographer of Ballet 5:8 in Chicago. Julianna is a groundbreaking figure within the field of dance, as she is one of the few Mexican American Artistic Directors and Resident Choreographers of a professional ballet company. Her work is paving the way for other women and minorities in professional ballet.
She is an incredible choreographer and recently created her 50th work! She is known for engaging audiences in discussions of life and faith through her choreography. Julianna enjoys training and mentoring the next generation of aspiring artists at the School of Ballet 5:8’s Pre-Professional, Conservatory, and Trainee Programs.
In our conversation today, we talk about the importance of having various perspectives and voices in art, and particularly in dance. We chat about Julianna’s dance journey, including challenges she faced such as eating disorders and struggles with mental health. I love her heart to give life to everyone that she encounters - as a teacher, mom, mentor, and choreographer. I enjoyed hearing about her choreographic process and what her career as a choreographer has looked like so far. Julianna is an inspiration!

Cameron Cunningham, founder of Reverent Rhythms, joins me for episode 92! Reverent Rhythms is a non-profit Cameron started when she was a junior in college back in 2018. Currently, Reverent Rhythms includes a school of the arts, a scholarship program, community programs, a professional dance company, and overseas missions.

My conversation today is with Dr. Katherine Millis, a Physical Therapist with a Certification in Sports and Orthopedic Manual Therapy (CSOMT). I love her passion for helping artistic athletes attain their personal goals. Dr. Millis earned her Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology from Texas A&M University and her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of the Incarnate Word. After graduating from PT school, she continued her education by pursuing her Certification in Sports and Orthopedic Manual Therapy (CSOMT), and she was a Fellow with the American Academy of Orthopedic and Manual Physical Therapists (FAAOMPT).
As a dancer herself, Dr. Millis understands the specific needs of dancers and the benefits of working with a PT who understands dance. She is actually still performing professionally today, and she started her own business called Excelerate Physical Therapy! In our conversation, we talk about her journey as well as what it looked like to start her business in the midst of the pandemic. Dr. Millis gives practical tips for dancers and athletes, and we chat about how every aspect of our wellness is interrelated.

Angie Weiss, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Dance Instructor/Choreographer, joins me for episode 90! Angie and I recently met at the Texas Dance Educators Association Convention, where we both participated as exhibitors.
Angie is a dancer, dance educator, and choreographer with a background both in the studio world and drill team. Our guest for episode 87 is one of my dear friends from college, Rebecca Spencer. She is a dance educator and yoga instructor living in the Pacific Northwest. Rebecca recently started her own yoga business called Abiding Place Yoga. In today’s episode we talk about Rebecca’s background as a dancer, performer, and teacher. Then, we dive into the topic of health and wellness. So often our identity can become wrapped up in our ability (especially as dancers) and in our health. Rebecca opens up about her journey dealing with health struggles during pregnancy. I'm so grateful for Rebecca sharing her story, because I think it's going to resonate with you as you listen.
One of my favorite things Rebecca shares is that just because you can do all the things, doesn’t mean you should do all the things right now. And that it’s okay to adjust in life based on the season. Merry Christmas, friends! During the Christmas season, we are bringing you a super special series, “Stories of Faith & Transformation.” I cannot think of a better gift than this conversation today! Our guest for part two of this series is author, speaker, and adventurer, Kim Meeder. I have been so excited to share this conversation with you. Ever since I heard about Kim Meeder and started reading her books, my life has been so impacted. I am inspired by her faith, and I believe you will be too!
Through her own experience of deep loss as a child, Kim encountered the love of God in a profound way. Inspired by Jesus’ love, in 1995, Kim and her husband Troy transformed their 9-acre cinder quarry into a ranch for kids and Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch was born. This unique non-profit organization rescues abused and neglected horses and is a safe place for kids and families to come find hope. As they help nurture the horses back to health, they find healing as well. Something I find incredible is that their work with each participant is one-on-one, with one leader, one horse and one child . . . always free of charge.

Brown, EVIDENCE, a dance company and is a current member of Bruce Wood Dance in Dallas, TX. Kevyn started out in visual art and discovered a love of dance in high school. During his time training to be a professional dancer in New York City, he really started searching for his true identity, and he ended up on an EPIC faith journey!
I loved hearing from Kevyn about how his view of dance has shifted over the years and about the power of truly loving others. I was so moved by this conversation with Kevyn, and I believe you will be inspired and moved as well!

Today’s episode is part five of this series, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to connect with Dr. Chelsea Pierotti! I first heard about Chelsea through her business, Passionate Coach, and I was so encouraged by her resources as a dance team director myself. It was such a gift to get to talk to her, hear about her journey, and learn from the insight she brings with her background in sport psychology.
Chelsea was a professional ballet dancer and a successful high school dance coach for over a decade. She won multiple State Championship titles and was recognized as Colorado’s Dance Coach of the Year and twice as the National Dance Coaches Association’s Associate of the Year. Outside of coaching, Chelsea also has a Ph.D. in Sport Psychology and is a Teaching Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
In our conversation, we talk about Chelsea’s experience getting into dance, her time as a dance coach, and what led her to get her Ph.D. in Sport Psychology. Through her business and her Passion for Dance podcast, Chelsea has had the opportunity to work with a variety of teams from all around the nation. We get into topics like the difference between belonging and “fitting in”, signs of a healthy vs. unhealthy team culture, the importance of not only setting–but following through–with team values, and our words as leaders (and how they can shape our team’s self-talk).
Chelsea currently runs a company providing online and in-person educational resources for dancers and dance educators including digital courses, memberships, and workshops to help you learn and thrive. She’s worked across multiple schools & districts in a variety of settings and brings great perspective to this conversation. Lakeisha currently serves as an Assistant Director of Fine Arts in Katy ISD. Prior to rejoining Katy ISD in 2021, she was the Executive Director of Contests for Crowd Pleasers Dance for over 5 years. She spent several years as the Director of Fine Arts in Alvin Independent School District. She is active in the dance community as a CEDFA Fine Arts Summit Cadre Member, TDEA DEAL committee member, a DEAL adjudicator and she also makes time to travel throughout the state presenting workshops, providing professional learning, judging, choreographing and directing dance events.

I am so excited and honored to be joined by my former dance team director, Betsy Heathcock, for part three of this series! Betsy and I talk about topics such as intentionally developing a positive team culture, the power of empathy, and what it looks like to continue learning and growing as a leader.
Betsy has been actively involved in Dance Education since 1978. During her career she taught dance and directed at three premier high schools. She was the choreographer for the Tournament of Roses “Music for All Honor Dance Team”, Dance Team Directors of America’s “All Star Dance Team” and was the United State Olympic Festival Assistant Dance Director/Choreographer in 1986.
Betsy has served on the Texas Dance Educators’ Association Executive board in six different board positions. She oversaw the inception of the Texas State Dance Assessment, D.E.A.L -“Dance Educators’ Assessment of Learning” and continues to Coordinate and adjudicate for this Assessment. Betsy has earned numerous accolades including being named to the Texas Dance Educators’ “Hall of Fame” in 2005, “Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2000 and “Dance Team Director of the Year” in 1995.
Betsy was a Clinic Director for MA Dance Officer Camp and continues to be a Camp Director at MA Dance line camps and an adjudicator for MA Dance as well as with several companies throughout the country. She continues to mentor and provide guidance to Dance educators throughout the state. Betsy has been one of the most impactful mentors in my life, and I have watched her live out the wisdom she shares in this episode.

For part two of this series, we are so excited to introduce you to Rob Miller from Proactive Coaching! Rob is the former director of Champions of Character for NAIA and the former Director of the National Christian College Athletic Association. He is presently the commissioner of the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference. Rob was a 3-sport athlete in high school and played NAIA college basketball, where he served as team captain his senior year. He has coached both men and women in high school and college basketball as well as in track and field.
Rob has been a partner in Proactive Coaching since 2008. He speaks about 120-130 days per year bringing character-based team and leadership development to high-school and college teams. In our conversation today, we jump right into practical and relevant content. I love how Rob breaks things down in a straight-forward way and shares steps for how coaches, directors, and leaders can create a healthy team culture. It is such an honor to have Mary Wendt join us for part one of this series! Mary is a dynamic speaker, educator, and leader. She has been involved in the dance team industry for over 41 years as a coach and industry professional. Mary was the Education Director for USASF Dance and the Associate Director of Enrichment/Leadership. Mary has judged internationally and facilitated coach and athlete workshops, including developing a leadership program for students from Moldova. A part of the original judging panel at The Dance Worlds, Mary was the Dance Scoring Director for the IASF, the International All-Star Federation.
Mary was the executive director and former choreographer of the Citrus Bowl and worked for MA Dance as their Vice President for over 35 years. The Texas Dance/Drill Team Educators voted her as their youngest Lifetime Achievement Recipient and Hall of Fame Recipient. She has received the Hall of Fame award from DX Events and the National Dance Coaches Association.
Mary shares so much wisdom from her experience as we dive into this series. We cover a wide variety of topics including being intentional in building a positive team culture, leading out of your values, practical tips for building communication skills, and why the work of directors and coaches is so important.

Today’s conversation was such a sweet time with my new friend, Hannah Requa. Hannah graduated from Texas Christian University’s School for Classical & Contemporary Dance and trained at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. She has performed with multiple professional dance companies including wild goose chase dance, Bruce Wood Dance, Corpus Christi Ballet, and Mei/Co. Dance. Hannah has experience teaching in a variety of settings, including as an adjunct faculty member at Baylor University.
Hannah’s journey in dance started at the age of 14. She shares about what it looks like to trust God’s timing and to trust the doors He closes and opens along the path of life. Hannah has continued to dance professionally while being a mother of two, and I love hearing about her experiences seeing God’s goodness in the midst of what can certainly be a challenging balancing act! Hannah currently lives in Waco, Texas, with her husband Spencer and their two children. I am so inspired by Hannah, and I believe you will be as well!

I am honored to have Lindsey Carlson back on the podcast for episode 68! Lindsey was a guest on the podcast in fall of 2020 for episode 22. It was so much fun catching up with her and hearing about her newest book, “A Better Encouragement: Trading Self-Help for True Hope,” which released in June of 2022.
Lindsey and I talk about her family’s recent move back to Texas and her experiences processing this season of change. She shares her journey writing and publishing “A Better Encouragement: Trading Self-Help for True Hope” in the midst of the pandemic and what prompted her to write the book in the first place. Today’s episode is so inspiring! My guest for episode 67 is Kathleen Schuler, the director of Störling Conservatory in Kansas. After receiving her B.F.A. in Dance from Belhaven University in Jackson, MS, Kathleen danced for 2 seasons as a company member with Störling Dance Theater. Following her time with the company, she has continued teaching and choreographing in a variety of settings.
For 8 years Kathleen directed a trainee style dance program for Störling Dance Theater (Störling’s Artist Development Program or ADP) before Störling Conservatory was established in partnership with Visible Music College. I loved learning about Störling Conservatory, which is a Conservatory style Bachelor of Arts in Dance degree for Visible Music College. Störling Conservatory of Dance has 3 concentrations: Performance, Choreography, and Dance Ministry, and a 1 year certificate in dance.
A thread that goes through our whole conversation is the idea of dreaming big dreams and realizing that God is a God of big dreams. I love Kathleen’s encouragement, “Why not you? Why not now?”

It is such a joy to share this conversation with my friend Tammy Tolås with you today! Her vibrant spirit and bold faith are such an inspiration! Tammy currently serves at the University of the Nations College of Arts. She leads a dance ministry out of the YWAM Kona Campus, owns and operates her own business for dance and Pilates, and is producing the 20th Anniversary Project Dance Event in Kona, Hawaii, this summer. Tammy is wife to another dancer – Andreas Tolås – and mom to two children.
I love how Tammy describes her journey as a life of “wild obedience.” We dive into what that looks like and the difference between a good plan and obedience. I was so encouraged by her perspective on topics like what impact really means, why comparison has no place for us as artists, and being confident knowing we are loved by God, regardless of our “qualifications.”
Towards the end of the episode, Tammy shares about the Project Dance 20th Anniversary Event happening this summer! Project Dance was founded by Cheryl Cutlip, guest on episode 12. I am honored and excited to have my friend Maren Weinberger Maddry on the podcast! Maren’s artistic journey led her to be a professional opera singer. In our conversation we walk through her journey of deciding to pursue opera and both the highs and lows she’s experienced throughout her professional career. We also chat about the mental, emotional, and physical strength it takes to be a professional opera singer.

I thought it would be meaningful to go a different route with this episode. Join us for a conversation about how we can go through this Christmas season present to both the joy of Christmas and the suffering and grief a lot of us are experiencing in our lives currently. While grieving at the holidays is not new, this year we have collectively walked through a large amount of trauma, loss, and suffering. I felt that it would be timely to have a conversation that dives into grief and how to process our grief in a healthy way. How do we allow the Gospel to inform our grief process?
I am so grateful to have Pastor Mike Andrews joining me for this conversation! Mike was my youth pastor growing up, and his mentorship has had a profound impact on my life. Today, he sits down with me to talk about what the Bible says about our suffering, loss, grief, and the hope we have in Christ. Joining me for episode 54 is Hannah Newman-Pan! Hannah grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and trained at Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School. She graduated from the Ailey/Fordham BFA program in 2016 with a double major in Dance and English, and joined Peridance Contemporary Dance Company in 2016.
In addition to her dance career, Hannah works in writing and communications for nonprofits. She worked with Shining Light for 7 years as a teaching artist and grant writer: Shining Light seeks to unlock human potential in America’s prisons by providing holistic performing arts and well-being programming for incarcerated people.

There is so much to love about this conversation with Bailee Teter! Bailee graduated with her master’s degree from Lipscomb University and is a Licensed Counselor working part time doing equine assisted counseling. She is also a dancer and directs the Adonai Arts Academy dance program. I love that we got connected through this podcast!
Bailee currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee, with her husband. She has a beautiful heart for seeing people find freedom! Bailee recently started a blog called Paraklesis with a vision of seeing it grow into a full ministry. Her mission is to use creativity to help people connect to God for healing and growth.
We chat about Bailee growing up with passions for both volleyball and dance. After finishing up college, Bailee spent a year in Europe doing mission work before pursuing her counseling degree. She shares what it was like to experience burnout and when we can know if it is time for a shift of seasons in our own lives. I enjoyed hearing about the power of creative therapy and learning more about what working with horses in equine assisted therapy looks like (which is amazing!). In honor of this being the last week of the school year where I work, today’s conversation is with my amazing friend and coworker Kayla Sokoloff! Kayla and I are just wrapping up our 2nd year teaching dance together at Dulles High School. She has a strong passion for dance and leadership, and I am so grateful to work alongside her!
Working together as dance directors, we see each other more than we see our families during the school year. I count it an incredible blessing that our relationship has grown from collaborating as coworkers to being there for each other as friends. Through learning more about ourselves and one another, we’ve been able to intentionally build stronger communication and a true partnership in leading the dance department.
In this conversation, you are essentially getting a glimpse of the kinds of conversations Kayla and I are having all the time! We chat about what we’ve learned this past year teaching through the pandemic, both the challenging aspects and the gifts we’ve gained. We talk about what it looks like to lean into a “less is more” mindset, intentionally using our time, and celebrating along the way.
Kayla also shares how her lifestyle and perspective shifted after being diagnosed with Crohn’s in 2019. I am so inspired by Kayla’s journey of pursuing wellness and simplicity and not letting one doctor’s words determine her future. We dive into the topic of minimalism, which both Kayla and I have become passionate about. We are continuing to see the benefits of this shift, both in our personal lives and in the dance team world.

You’re in for a treat today as Chris Hurt joins me for episode 50 of the podcast! Chris is a husband, father of two teenage children, and has been a student pastor for over 25 years! He loves to teach the Gospel and believes that the Bible should not be boring.
Chris shares about what got him into youth ministry and why he’s stayed. He is passionate about the church incorporating more creativity and seeing more people use their giftings. With a love for comedy and a desire to be in ministry, Chris wrestled with the question “can ministry and comedy coexist?”
Chris started doing skits and sketches for his own youth group in the late 90’s. Through a chance meeting, he saw one of The Skit Guys in a Chili’s in Amarillo who helped launch him and a lifelong friend into some of their very first paid performances. Currently, he is part of a sketch duo known as Hurt and Manley.
As part of Hurt and Manley, Chris has performed in various places around the States mainly to student groups at camps, weekend retreats, and one night evangelism events. I love how Chris explains, “when we can laugh, then truth can enter our hearts.”

This week, Bethany Sleebos joins me on the podcast! Bethany lives in College Station, TX, with her husband Patrick and their 3 beautiful kids. Together, they own Suzanne’s School of Dance and desire to create a safe place for dancers to grow in both “Excellence of Dance & Heart.”
Bethany shares about her journey and how she has come full circle back to her home studio, Suzanne’s School of Dance, where she first began her training at 5 years old. Through her time there, she learned to use her gift for the Lord and realized her passion to share that gift of dance with others. At the age of 15, Bethany moved to Houston, TX, where she danced with Ad Deum Dance Company.
Following her time at Ad Deum, Bethany used dance for missions, which led her to start a school and company in the Netherlands under Youth With a Mission. It was there that she met her husband, Patrick. In 2013, they moved back to Texas and purchased Suzanne’s School of Dance.
In addition to owning the studio together with her husband, Bethany also dances with Mei/co Dance Company and directs Talitha Dance Company. We chat about the challenges and blessings of owning a studio, honoring our mentors, the realities of transitioning out of a performance career, and more! Bethany brings so much wisdom as she shares what we can gain by surrendering to God and laying things down. I love her encouragement that when God shuts a door, it’s because He has something better in store.

I am excited to introduce you to Frank Rodriguez, an experienced musician and guitar teacher as well as the developer of Villela Guitars. Frank and I talk about how he first got into playing guitar encouraged by the Priest at his church. He then went on to study music and guitar at the High School of the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas.
He shares about his experiences playing at local clubs and shows, and eventually moving to Los Angeles. There, he worked and toured as a guitarist for various artists and musicians and even worked as a musical director. He has worked with some of the best musicians in the country and performed in prestigious venues from The Greek Theatre to Madison Square Garden.
Frank eventually returned to his hometown of Houston and began teaching at his alma mater, HSPVA. He also has teaching experience at San Jacinto College as well as an international high school in his community. In 2012, he began teaching a guitar class for an inpatient drug rehab program for Memorial Hermann.
Currently, Frank works on making and marketing his own line of instruments called Villela guitars. Throughout our conversation, we get a chance to talk about his personal journey, including the highlights and challenges of working in the music industry in L.A. We also talk about his heart for teaching and for working in his community.

My sweet friend Rebecca Pillow joins me for episode 45! Rebecca is a wife, stay-at-home mom, dancer, and dance teacher. She and I danced together at Ad Deum Dance Company, both share a passion for Creative Dreams Outreach Center, and both happen to be Enneagram Nines!
We chat about Rebecca’s journey as a dancer. She grew up training at The School of Performing Arts in Orlando, Florida, and then studied at the University of Oklahoma. We talk about the importance of having both great training and encouragement as dancers. It is such a vital conversation in the dance world.
After college, Rebecca and her husband Bob moved to Houston and she joined Ad Deum Dance Company. She and I talk about the Ad Deum community’s refreshing approach to combining faith and art in our lives. Her time with Ad Deum developed a love for outreach which eventually led her to work as the Dance Director at Creative Dreams Outreach Center.
Rebecca shares about deep loss and grief she experienced walking through the loss of multiple family members and miscarriage. She describes the benefits of counseling and how it has impacted her journey of healing. I am so thankful for Rebecca’s vulnerability and her heart for allowing God to work through her story in order to help encourage others.

I had so much fun getting to know David (Dave) and Tina Samples for episode 44! Dave and Tina bring an incredible combination of humor and depth, and I know you will be encouraged as you listen. Dave and Tina have two sons and live in Texas. They have worked together in ministry throughout their marriage.
Tina is an award-winning author, speaker, worship leader, and music therapist. She co-authored the award-winning book Wounded Women of the Bible: Finding Hope When Life Hurts, with fellow author and friend, Dena Dryer. As a singer, Tina has performed in the musical drama Texas as well as in The Promise, a musical drama of the life of Christ.
Dave is the lead pastor at Tolar Baptist Church in Tolar, Texas. He has worked in the ministry for over thirty years. In addition to ministry, Dave has worked in radio and theatre. Together, Dave and Tina co-authored the award-winning book Messed Up Men of the Bible: Seeing the Men in Your Life Through God’s Eyes.
Throughout our conversation we chat about how Dave and Tina met, what first got them into ministry, and what it is like working together in ministry. We also dive into the topic of suffering. With Tina experiencing a heart attack and subsequent heart transplant and Dave’s journey with cancer, they both have so much wisdom to share on what it means to suffer well. I am so excited to share my conversation with Abby Williamson! Abby and I danced together in Ad Deum II Dance Company, and I had so much fun getting to catch up with her. Abby currently lives and works in Kathmandu, Nepal with her husband and their two sons, Jude and Esko. I am so grateful Abby and I were able to connect for this conversation just before they returned to Nepal. Her husband, Ross, is a teacher trainer there, working toward better quality education in schools throughout the country. Abby teaches a student leadership course at the international school as well as spearheading her new venture, The Culture Canvas.
Abby shares her journey as a dancer and the development of her love for arts education. She has experience teaching the arts internationally in Seattle, Afghanistan, Houston, South Korea, and now Nepal.
Abby and I chat about the heart behind The Culture Canvas, which provides arts and culture learning resources for little global citizens! She is passionate about providing learning experiences for kids that come from a global perspective. I personally was encouraged to hear about Abby’s steps of faith throughout her journey. It is a great reminder that in moments of transition, God is with us and He is providing.

My guest for episode 42 is Bria Greenwood! Originally from Madison, Mississippi, Bria is a professional dancer with Ad Deum Dance Company and a dance teacher. Bria describes herself as a lover of Jesus and someone who loves her family. She is the oldest of 5 siblings.
Bria received her dance training from the world’s first professional Christian ballet company, Ballet Magnificat!, in Jackson, MS. She was in their School of the Arts, and then their professional Trainee Program.
We talk about how her time at Ballet Magnificat! developed her love of worship through movement and prepared her for the work she is doing now with Ad Deum Dance Company. Bria’s story reminds me that sometimes a closed door is really God’s provision and His way of guiding us exactly where He wants us to be.
After her time with Ballet Magnificat, Bria moved to Houston, Texas, to join Ad Deum II Dance Company, and has since been promoted to principal dancer in Ad Deum Dance Company. Bria has such a beautiful heart for God, and you will hear that all throughout our conversation. I also love Bria’s heart for bringing joy to others through teaching and community outreach.

It was a joy to catch up with Krista Bower! Krista is the Chair of the Belhaven University Dance Department in Jackson, Mississippi. Krista has such a beautiful spirit and heart for others. Our conversation is equal parts Krista’s personal journey as a dancer and sharing more about the dance program at Belhaven.
Krista earned an MFA in Choreography from Jacksonville University and a BFA in Dance from Belhaven University. She has served on staff for the USA International Ballet Competition and owns and directs the Yazoo City School of Dance. As a professional dancer, Krista performed with Living Water Dance Company and later co-founded Front Porch Dance, a Mississippi-based contemporary dance company. Krista is also a founding instructor of the Dance for Parkinson’s program in Jackson, MS.
I enjoyed hearing Krista’s perspective on leading through the pandemic and insights from her role as a teacher and mentor. We talk about the transition when Krista came in as the Chair of the Belhaven University Dance Department.
Belhaven University is close to my heart as a former student. I love that we had this opportunity to chat about the key elements of the dance program at Belhaven and what makes it so unique. I felt so refreshed after my time talking to Jeanna Vance, guest on episode 40. Jeanna exudes the love of God and invests in each person she encounters. She is a wife, mother of two, and a dance artist. Jeanna founded Open Sky Arts Collective in 2014. Open Sky’s mission is to use the arts to bring the Kingdom of God to the lost and hurting among us. Beginning as a project-based organization, Open Sky has now grown into two full-time companies operating in Houston and Dallas.
Prior to starting Open Sky, Jeanna danced with various modern and ballet companies including Ad Deum Dance Company, Sandra Organ’s Dance Company, Suchu Dance, Hopestone Inc., and Psophonia Dance Company. She served on faculty with Dance Revolution dance convention for 12 years teaching dance, performing, and sharing her journey of faith and art with thousands of students and teachers.
Jeanna shares her story of overcoming self-hatred and an eating disorder through experiencing the love of God and the power of forgiveness. Seeing others experience freedom and recognize their value is a huge part of Jeanna’s heart and mission.
At a crossroad in her journey, she felt God prompt her to start Open Sky. Are you in a place where you feel like you don’t have anything to give? May Jeanna’s story fill you with hope and encouragement. As Jeanna says, “we are not enough, but He is enough.”

The beautiful Hannah Anderson joins me for episode 39! Hannah is a wife, a mom of two creative and expressive kids, and a dance artist. Her love for God is evident and is an integral part of her life as an artist. In our conversation, we talk about a variety of topics such as grief, holistic health, and the power of dance in worship.
Hannah began her dance journey at Dramatic Truth School of the Arts in Kansas City. After graduating from their ballet and modern program at 16, she discovered the beautiful Jose Limón technique. That season was pivotal for her as a dancer. Hannah danced as a company member for Dramatic Truth, Storling Dance Theatre, Dance Ad Deum and then helped found Open Sky Arts Collective, which now has two locations and is directed by Jeanna Vance.
Hannah is passionate about wellness, from both the perspective of a dancer and a mom. One of the most impactful parts of our conversation for me personally was diving into the topic of grief and what it looks like to work through grief in a way that leads to emotional wellness. Currently, Hannah oversees dance for her church in North Carolina, where she serves with the musicians and vocalists to lead worship on Sunday mornings.

My guest for episode 38 is the lovely Kalette Alspaugh! Kalette is the owner of Beautiful Feet Studio of Dance & The Arts which offers a variety of performing and visual arts classes all in a faith based environment. She is also the founder of the non-profit Hand Picked, Inc. which serves in “bringing good” through the arts to the financially disadvantaged, orphaned, and physically restricted including hospitalized seniors and child survivors rescued from human trafficking both locally and around the world.
Kalette’s passion for leadership, teaching, and the arts began at a young age. During high school, God planted the dream in her heart for what is now Beautiful Feet Studio of Dance & The Arts. With that vision in mind, she went on to study Business Administration at Baylor University. Kalette shares how she gained valuable leadership experience through her work in management with Walmart and Chick-fil-A, where she discovered key principles for leadership development.
We chat about God’s faithfulness in the journey bringing the vision of Beautiful Feet to pass. Kalette shares how the studio has continued to grow and how God is working in this current season — even in the midst of the pandemic. I love Kalette’s heart for stewarding the gifts we’ve been given by God as we keep our eyes fixed on Him. Through both the studio and non-profit, God’s power is at work bringing life change through the arts.

For episode 37, I’m joined by my friend Logan Keller. Logan and I have gotten to know each other through Sugar Land Family Church, where he is currently working overseeing the video team, social media team, and graphics team. He also directs the livestream, mixes audio for the livestream, and works on overall production.
Throughout our conversation, Logan and I talk about the value of enjoying creative pursuits as hobbies and that life really is a journey of discovery. Logan shares about the pressure he put on himself feeling like he needed to have everything figured out and that he needed to know the “one thing” that he wanted to do for the rest of his life. I love his perspective on trying new things and not letting that pressure hold us back.
Logan graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with his bachelors in English Literature and a minor in Communications. We talk about Logan’s passion for photography, film and music, and his experiences in ministry. Logan opens up about growing up as a “pastor’s kid,” and how his faith has also impacted his view of creative work. I appreciate his encouragement that sometimes the obstacles we face help us grow the most.

Amanda Winslett is a wife and the mother of two boys. She is passionate about music and dance and has been a Zumba instructor for almost 7 years. Her love of music grew out of her positive experiences in choir growing up. She now serves as a vocalist for her church’s worship team.
Amanda shares her incredible testimony. She grew up in an abusive family situation and then found herself in a similar situation as an adult. She shares the story of finding the courage to leave that relationship and how God has brought healing into her life. We talk about the power of words - that words can bring life or destruction.
Recently, Amanda went back to school for ministry. She has a heart for reaching other women to help empower them in their journey. I love how she uses whatever realm she finds herself in, whether teaching Zumba, her work with Mary Kay, or her worship ministry, to be able to reach and touch the lives of others. I love what Amanda says in our conversation, “God’s not calling me to be perfect, He’s calling me to be on purpose.”

My guest for episode 35 is Professional Visual Artist and Professor, Laura Sprague! Laura is a Wife, Mother, Nana and Jesus Follower based in Houston, TX. She is a multidisciplinary Visual Artist (primarily a sculptor) who works in clay, glass and metal.
I loved learning about Laura’s process as an artist and her experiences both as a teacher and a professional artist. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education from the University of Wisconsin with a minor in Jewelry-Metalsmithing.
Laura shares from her over 20 years of teaching experience ranging from elementary art to her current work teaching Ceramic classes at the college level. In May 2016, Laura completed a Master of Fine Arts degree at Houston Baptist University in Sculpture. We chat about that season in her life and the internal shift that took place from viewing herself an art teacher to then viewing herself as a professional artist.
Laura’s heart for serving people is evident throughout our conversation. I enjoyed talking with her about the power of art to bring healing, whether in our own lives or in the lives of others.

For episode 34, I am joined by my friend Tiffany Schrepferman. Tiffany is a freelance Production Stage Manager and Lighting Designer with a background as a professional dancer. She and I have been friends since college, and it was super fun catching up with her! Jackie Stouffer is the founder and Executive Director of Creative Dreams Outreach Center. Creative Dreams is a non-profit youth development program for middle and high school students. They offer free art, dance and music lessons as well as academic tutoring. Creative Dreams is truly a special place. I had the amazing opportunity to work there for multiple years during the summer and also after college, year-round.
In our conversation today, Jackie and I talk about the story of Creative Dreams. She shares how God planted the dream in her heart during her time raising her children and also working with an organization called Maria’s Children in Moscow, Russia. You will hear about how God gave her the vision for Creative Dreams and helped intervene and remove obstacles that felt like they were popping up as she was getting started.
We talk about how much Creative Dreams has evolved over the years and stories of God’s hand at work. She also talks about the process of building their own building for Creative Dreams to be housed. That was a huge journey of faith! Jackie has had a profound impact on so many lives; both the students and the volunteers or employees that have worked at Creative Dreams. I hope that you are inspired by her story to take that next step in pursuing the dream that God has placed in your heart.

We are kicking off 2021 with my incredible friend Carleigh Dunbar! Carleigh is an artist-educator based in Jackson, Mississippi. She and I have an engaging conversation surrounding our shared passion for the value of the arts in public education.
Carleigh is part of the dance faculty of Power Academic and Performing Arts Complex (Power APAC) and has been there since 2017. Power APAC is a public arts magnet school providing advanced academics and rigorous arts training to 4th-12th grade students. She also has a variety of experience dancing professionally and teaching in various capacities, including as an Adjunct Professor of Dance at Belhaven University. She is always looking to inspire, engage, and educate through the power of movement, and that is so evident in our conversation today.
We talk about what it’s like coming in as a first-year teacher and the diligence and perseverance that it takes. I love how she explains, even though she had the passion coming in, she had to grow into the position she was given. We chat about what it looks like to create a safe environment and atmosphere for our students, whether virtually or in-person.
Carleigh shares practical wisdom for how we can support arts in public education and encouragement for artists to be patient and present in this season during the pandemic. Our "Family Christmas" series continues for part three with my amazing sisters-in-law, Alisa Piñones and Alana Borst! Alisa and Alana are twin sisters, and they are both such fun and beautiful people! We chat about what it was like growing up as a twin, their experiences with dance and worship, the journey of motherhood, and their favorite Christmas memories and traditions.
I enjoyed hearing Alisa and Alana’s perspective on the value of dance as a form of worship. They share both the beautiful and the difficult aspects of leading in the church in worship through movement. From their earliest experiences with dance, worship has been at the heart of their expression. Alana shares how their mom inspired them to pursue dance and to grow as worshipers. They share their experiences with dance growing up, through college, and more recently in missions and project-based ministry. Alisa reminisces about some of the funny moments during her time in missions with YWAM.

Our “Family Christmas” series continues with my aunt, Seanne Smith! Seanne’s story is such an inspiration to me as I’m sure it will be for you. We talk about everything from fun family stories to her career journey, and we celebrate her being 20 years cancer free!
Seanne grew up dancing and worked in the professional dance world early in her career. She danced with Amarillo Ballet Theater, the musical drama Texas, and Gus Giordano, among others. She also worked as a teacher and choreographer. After getting a job in the retail world, she continued to climb the corporate ladder with companies like Lancome, Calvin Klein, and John Hardy, and eventually came to a point where she described she felt like she had “lost her soul.”
Seanne and I talk about the moment she decided it was okay to let go and leave the retail world behind. Soon after, she discovered Zumba and found a renewed sense of passion and rekindled love for dance. Seanne is a testament to the belief that it is never too late to follow your passion, and she became a licensed Zumba instructor at the age of 60! I am so grateful for this opportunity to introduce you to my lovely friend Joanna Koleth, or Joanna Tan as many know her. Joanna is a dance-artist educator, choreographer, Pilates instructor, and writer. Joanna and her husband Glenn are currently based in her hometown of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with their dog Koko. Joanna graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance from Belhaven University and a Master of Fine Arts in Dance from Hollins University.
We chat about Joanna’s experiences living and dancing in various countries and how that continues to shape her work as a dancer, choreographer and teacher. We also explore the concept of identity and developing your “voice” as an artist. She talks about how easy it is to compare our lives to those around us and the importance of recognizing and valuing our own personal journey.
In our conversation, Joanna shares about her passion for storytelling through the art of dance and how she sees the impact of dance that goes far beyond the movement itself. My sweet friend Melissa Livingston joins me for episode 23! Melissa and I met as dance majors at Belhaven University, and have enjoyed cheering each other on in life ever since. Melissa and her husband Jeremy are passionate about ministry and discipleship, and are also health coaches to help encourage others towards optimal and holistic health.
We start by sharing our love for all things Fall and reminiscing a bit about our college years. Melissa shares about her journey as a dancer, from beginning as a young girl to the God story of how she ended up pursuing her BFA in Dance. For Melissa, connecting faith to her life as a dancer was a challenge. She shares how a seriously low point in college allowed her to grow closer to God and even integrate her faith more deeply into her art form.
After college, Melissa continued to develop a love for teaching, and spent five years teaching ballet for the pre-professional students at The Link School of the Arts. We chat about where Melissa’s love for teaching began and the power and beauty of mentorship.
Over time, Melissa felt new dreams awakening, and she began transitioning into ministry. Her passion for teaching has taken new shape as she and Jeremy continue to teach and disciple others through ministry in the local church. May Melissa’s journey encourage you to remember that your identity is not about what you do, but who God says you are.

Get ready to be encouraged through this conversation with Lindsey Carlson! Lindsey is a pastor’s wife, a mother of 5, and an author. She published her first book, “Growing in Godliness: A Teen Girl’s Guide to Maturing in Christ” with Crossway in 2019 and is currently writing a book on biblical encouragement for women with an expected release in 2022.
Lindsey shares about her early pursuits in the arts and how that led her into a love for communications. After starting a family, her path shifted towards motherhood and dabbling in multiple areas such as photography, music, and theater. After attending a women’s conference where they shared about speaking and writing, Lindsey’s eyes were opened to the opportunity of writing as a way to serve God.
During this time, Lindsey and her husband Kyle moved from Houston, Texas, to Baltimore, Maryland, to plant Imprint Community Church. We chat about how her passion for writing developed from blog posts to writing articles for The Gospel Coalition, Desiring God, and a variety of other contributor sites. From there, she began to pursue publishing a book. She describes how writing is a “long-haul thing” and how valuable community is in the process. We talk about the joys along the publishing journey and the challenges, including the trap of comparison and the reality of rejection.
Lindsey’s heart for teaching the Bible and discipling women through her writing and public speaking is evident throughout our conversation. I believe everyone will come away from this conversation encouraged to look to God and depend on His strength as we walk out our faith journey.

Episode 21 is a beautiful conversation with Amanda Browning that is sure to leave you feeling inspired! Amanda is a professional dancer, fitness coach, wife, and mother of four. She is currently dancing with Phoenix Rising Dance Company based in Indianapolis, Indiana.
We chat about Amanda’s journey with dance including her time at Belhaven University, her experiences dancing in multiple professional companies, and what it has looked like balancing her passion for dance with motherhood.
After having her second child, Amanda found herself at a low point as she struggled with serious postpartum depression and a sense of her identity as a dancer being stripped away. It was during this season that Amanda fell in love with fitness. Through developing the habit of daily movement, she felt more clarity, more confidence, and reduced stress. She eventually learned about fitness coaching and decided the only thing holding her back from becoming a coach herself was fear.
Amanda decided to step out in courage and start her own virtual health and fitness business from home so she could help other women who may be walking through similar seasons. Through her story, you will find encouragement and practical advice on what it looks like to invest in the season you are in and live in line with your values

My guest for episode 20 is Nathan Clarkson. Nathan is an actor, author, filmmaker, podcast host, and all around creative person. He has a deep love for stories, which is the root of his creative endeavors. Growing up with learning disabilities and mental illness, Nathan shares how his mom, author Sally Clarkson, helped him lean into his areas of strength and encouraged his passion for stories. Together, Sally and Nathan co-authored the book “Different: The Story of an Outside-the-Box Kid and the Mom Who Loved Him.”
After receiving formal training in acting through the New York Film Academy, Nathan moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. He gained experience in tv shows and films in Hollywood, and eventually started his own film company. We talk about the challenges and highlights of working in the film industry, the creative process, and what it takes to produce a film. Nathan encourages artists to do what you can with what you have and know that you have to start somewhere. While we so often strive for perfection, Nathan reminds us that the beauty is in the process.
Nathan recently published his first solo book, “Good Man: An Honest Journey into Discovering Who Men Were Actually Created to Be.” You’ll hear how Nathan’s time in Hollywood prompted him to write this book. It was so wonderful connecting with Shannon Benton! Shannon is a professional dancer who has performed with companies such as Ad Deum Dance Company, HoustonMET, Open Sky Arts Collective, and Zion Dance Project. She recently completed Youth with a Mission’s Arts in Movement Discipleship Training School and earned her certification in Progressing Ballet Technique. Shannon currently lives in the Kansas City area where she is dancing with Störling Dance Theater and is a faculty member for Störling Conservatory.
I am so grateful for Shannon’s heart for racial reconciliation and the wisdom she shares. As artists, we can play a role in the process of racial reconciliation through storytelling, connection, and valuing the beauty in our differences. We chat about how empathy is so crucial and how listening with the intent to understand creates the space for deeper relationships. Since recording this episode, she became the first staff member of Unite KC, a faith-based, grassroots organization committed to taking action toward racial reconciliation in Kansas City.
Identity is another key topic of our conversation. Shannon explains that if we listen to the world’s ideas for identity, we will have a hard time finding a “place to stand,” but if we look to our Creator, our identity is built on a solid foundation. My guest for episode 18 is the beautiful Jaleesa McCreary! Jaleesa has been a worship leader at The Austin Stone Community Church for the past 7 years. In addition to leading worship weekly, Jaleesa spends much of her time investing in the development of female worship leaders and teaching worship ministry philosophy at The Austin Stone.
Jaleesa shares her incredible testimony of walking through the loss of her voice and experiencing what felt like the death of a dream. Without singing, Jaleesa’s life felt empty, but God remained faithful through it all. You are sure to be inspired by her journey. I love Jaleesa’s heart for people to encounter God personally in worship and take that encounter with God outside of Sundays.
As a young, biracial woman, Jaleesa shares about the challenges and insecurities she faced becoming one of the first female worship leaders in a predominately white church. We chat about what it means to “go scared” and step out in courage rather than being held back by fear. She helps encourage other women to take similar steps of faith and understand that they are called to so much more as worship leaders than merely singing.
Many of us have felt a sense that our identity as an artist is being stripped during this season of uncertainty and isolation. I love Jaleesa’s encouragement to lean into that process and allow God to shape our identity and purpose.

I’m excited to introduce you to my friend Gabriel Speiller for episode 17! Gabriel is a native New Yorker raised in Queens and is married to his lovely wife Dara who dances with Texas Ballet Theater. It was such a joy to talk with Libby John, host of the Art & Faith Conversations Podcast! Libby and I happen to both be Nines on the Enneagram and share a similar passion to highlight artists of faith. Libby hopes to use the podcast to encourage artists in their search for deeper meaning in their creative identity. For episode 14 of the podcast, I have the joy of introducing you to Shizu Yasuda! Shizu is currently the Artistic Director of Ad Deum II Dance Company. She began her professional career as a freelance dancer in New York City, after which she performed nationally and internationally as a principal dancer with Ad Deum Dance Company.
Shizu grew up in Japan where she developed a passion for dance. She decided to pursue dance by moving to New York City, where she happened to witness the first Project Dance event taking place in Times Square. Through a series of events, or “God moments” as I like to call them, she auditioned for Ad Deum Dance Company and started a new adventure in Houston, Texas.
In our conversation, Shizu and I talk about some of her favorite experiences as a professional dancer as well as a director and choreographer. We talk about the power of art and the value of finding your voice as an artist. Shizu shares her faith journey through the challenges of life including illness, injury, and spiritual emptiness. She describes going from an atheistic worldview, to a season as a devout Buddhist, and most recently, her search for truth brought her to faith in Jesus. I am so thankful that Shizu and I have had the opportunity to work together and be in community together through Ad Deum.

It was such a gift to spend time connecting with Cheryl Cutlip for episode 12! Cheryl is the founding director of The Project Dance Foundation, formed in 2002 as a mission to bring hope and healing to the world through the universal language of dance. Cheryl currently directs The Space @ Project Dance, the foundation’s dance training and education program area as well as the precision dance company, The Carolina Snowbelles.
Cheryl began dancing at a young age, and decided by the time she was 15 to pursue dance as a professional career. Her life changed dramatically when she put her faith in Jesus early in her performance career. She shares how she grappled with the place of dance in her life given her new found faith.
Cheryl enjoyed performing with the Radio City Rockettes for 15 years where her duties included dance captain; assistant choreographer and spokesperson for nationally televised appearances. We spend some time talking about her life as a Rockette and some highlights and fun stories from that season.
We get into some deep conversation around what it looks like to grieve the end of your career as a performer. Cheryl says, “You’re not just grieving the work you did onstage. You’re sort of all of sudden identifying with the very real truth that you won’t do this forever.” She shares the hope that “you have a voice when you’ve gone through something, reconciled with something, and have gained peace from that something”
Cheryl gives us a glimpse into the beginnings of the Project Dance events, which began nearly 20 years ago. Since then, the 3-day Project Dance events have taken place in over 26 cities and 13 countries! Cheryl describes how art has an eternal trajectory and acts as a bridge that connects people and brings unity. For the artist, the real beauty is experiencing God through the art.

My guest for episode 10 of the podcast is J. Clayton Winters. Clayton is a Professional Musical Theatre Performer and works in vocational ministry as the Director of Worship and Arts at Trinity Baptist Church of Fairfield, CT. He has a range of teaching experience, including as a Director of Musical Theater at the University level. Clayton’s fun personality and passion for life make this conversation one to remember!
We chat about how Clayton, in his own words, was a “total nuisance in school.” This led to his start in theatre at a young age, combining his love of stories and his entrepreneurial spirit. He has been working as a professional performer since the age of 11. Through our conversation, you will hear about the incredible twists and turns in his life, including a season where everything was taken away and the pursuit of his appetites left him void of hope or fulfillment. Clayton says, “in that void was Jesus.”

For Episode 9 of the Creative Impact Podcast, I have the joy of introducing you to one of my teachers and mentors, Laura Morton. Laura serves as an Associate Professor of Dance and Director of the Ballet Division at Belhaven University in Jackson, MS. She has traveled nationally and internationally performing professionally, teaching, and choreographing.
Laura and I talk about what it was like as educators ending the Spring 2020 semester during the pandemic, and we contemplate how dance could be impacted by this shift in our society. Laura shares about her journey in dance. Her path began with a pursuit of professional ballet, moved to teaching aerobics in the 1980's, then to jazz dance and eventually led her to a career in teaching at the collegiate level. Laura explains how she never thought she would become a teacher, let alone a professor in higher education.
Laura’s passion for teaching is evident, and she shares valuable insights for teachers as she explains her own journey and teaching philosophy. Laura’s background includes a degree in Psychology and a Master of Science in Applied Exercise Physiology. To increase longevity as a dancer, Laura recommends working with the body you have and understanding the power of thoughts in performance. Laura reminds us that while dance takes discipline, it should also be full of joy!

My friend Katelyn Harbaugh joins me for Episode 8 of the Creative Impact Podcast. Katelyn is a stay-at-home mom to her three children and is a visual artist who creates in what she describes as the “margins” of her life.

For episode 7 of the Creative Impact Podcast, I have the opportunity to chat with Steve Rooks. Steve is a former Principal Dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company where he performed for over a decade. His performance credits also include the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble. Currently, Steve is Chair of Dance and Resident Choreographer at Vassar College in New York.
In our conversation, you will hear the story of how Steve discovered dance in college while he was pursuing a music degree. He shares his incredible journey from novice dancer to touring the world as a Principal Dancer for the Martha Graham Dance Company. I enjoy hearing him describe working with Martha Graham and how his experiences with her impact how he works today.
We discuss the importance of mentorship. Steve challenges the assumption that once dancers are done performing they should automatically become teachers. He encourages dancers to make sure they are teaching from a place of passion and not frustration. I love his advice for dancers in this current season: be ready, the world is going to be craving the beauty we can bring as we come out of this season of isolation! Steve’s humility and wisdom are such a gift. I believe you will be so encouraged by this conversation!

My guest for episode 6 of the Creative Impact Podcast is Cynthia Newland. Cynthia is an artist, educator, speaker and wellness consultant. She is the founder of Alible3 – Nourishing the Body, Soul and Spirit, providing educational resources and equipping tools for holistic health. Cynthia is also the founder of Feet Speak Dance, offering hope through the art form of dance.
We chat about the key elements of wellness and the major part nutrition plays in our overall health, physically, mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually. We talk a lot about knowing what season of life we are in and making intentional choices to find sabbath rest, avoid burnout, and set boundaries so we can invest in our priorities. For all those who are mothers, you will find encouragement in Cynthia’s perspective of motherhood as an artist.

My guest for episode 5 of the Creative Impact Podcast is Durell Comedy. Durell was a professional dancer with the Limon Company and Mark Morris Dance Group in NYC for close to 11 years. Recently he, his wife, Hannah and 2 daughters, moved to Charlotte, NC. He currently serves as a Worship Leader for The LIFT, a church based in Indian Trail, North Carolina. I came out of my conversation with Durell so inspired and encouraged, and I know you will too! Durell shares about key moments in his journey and hearing God’s voice. At a moment where he felt like quitting, God opened a door. We talk about going through rejection and seasons that feel like we’re walking through the wilderness. Durell encourages us not to hold so tightly to one idea of the “plan” for our lives that we miss what God is doing in front of us.
We also talk about the current challenges we are facing with the pandemic and the racial injustice that can feel so overwhelming and hopeless. I love how Durell explains, “my eyes can’t look horizontally for hope”. Durell is passionate about helping to create an environment where people can experience the presence of God and truly be changed.

I am honored to share this conversation with Randall Flinn, Founder and Artistic Director of Ad Deum Dance Company in Houston, Texas. I have been connected with the Ad Deum community for many years and was a member of Ad Deum II Dance Company for two years. In my conversation with Randy, you will get to hear his story from the beginnings to current day. He grew up with a love for dance, but was held back from pursuing formal training because he feared negative reactions from his friends and family. I love his story of his first experience teaching! Through the years, he has connected with artists all over the world, and seen huge growth in the fellowship of believer artists. You will enjoy hearing Randy’s story of developing the Ad Deum Dance Company community. Randy’s shares wisdom about discerning the true absolutes of God versus things we think are truth that are really just part of our church culture. I’m so excited to introduce you to my friend, Whitney Dufrene! Whitney is a professional dancer with Doug Varone and Dancers in New York City. Our friendship began in college, and to give you a fair warning, in the first few minutes of our conversation we reminisce about special moments throughout our friendship. Whitney recounts her story from her start in dance all the way through her current role at Doug Varone and Dancers. We dive deeper into a challenging season in her life. She was seriously injured. She battled insomnia, depression, and even had thoughts of suicide. I am so grateful for Whitney’s vulnerability and willingness to share her story. Whitney gives her perspective on how we can help those we love who may be in the midst of a similar season. We talk about the common mindset that “when I finally get [insert your dream here], I will arrive,” and the beauty of depending on our Creator for our worth. Whitney has a passion for life, and is currently interested in pursuing a master’s degree so she can use the arts, movements, and play to help children heal from trauma. This conversation is deep, real, and points us to where we can truly find hope.

My guest for our very first episode of the Creative Impact Podcast is Stella Almblade. Stella is a professional dancer as well as an instructor for both dance and Pilates. Stella has an impressive resume (see below). But what really stands out to me about Stella is her genuine heart for others and her passion for helping dancers see the beauty of worshipping through their artform. Friends, my conversation with Stella was so life-giving. We start off talking about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on her work in New York City, and I love her perspective that artists are essential workers. Stella then shares about what got her into dance and some of the key moments in her journey as an artist. I am so thankful for Stella’s vulnerability and honesty in sharing her journey through injury and a season of depression. She also speaks to how dance can be used as a tool for healing.
