Staffing stress? You’re not on your Pat Malone!

Many of you have recently brought on your first staff members, and I hear you. YOU. ARE. STRESSED.

Building a team can be a truly exciting and rewarding time in any business, but it often comes with traumatic growth on the part of the business owner. This isn’t because you’re a bad leader or a bad business owner …

You’re a great “technician” (skilled clinician, in the case of most of my clients), with no training on how to recruit and retain staff or how to build a great team culture. You’re so great at what you do, that you’ve built a wonderful reputation and are now swamped with work. That’s why you’ve recruited staff to help out.

Trouble is, you can’t sustain your usual work load AND manage your team. Something’s gotta give!

And that triggers fear. Big time.

Clients mean dollars. Fewer clients means fewer dollars. How will you afford to reduce your client load so you can support your team?

What if I told you that most of my business coaching clients move from this state of fear and end up in a place where they not only see fewer clients themselves, but their practices generate MORE revenue to support business sustainability?

What if I also told you that a mark of a successful business is when the business owner is paid a salary but is not the primary source of revenue?

These are things we’re not taught how to do at uni.

I remember my early days of practice ownership, bumbling about in the dark, figuring it all out by trial and error (or more accurately, error and error!). I’ve gone from traumatic growth to consolidated stability to strategic growth over the years.

It’s no accident that my clinic’s team culture was recognised as a finalist in the Allied Health Awards last year. Or that we’ve been awarded contracts worth over a million dollars.

Team culture, team stability, and team ambassadors all feed into business success and reduce burnout risk for you and your team … And it’s all achievable, without having to resort to dark magic!

I’m running some training on exactly these concepts … And here’s where you can find out all about it: https://bit.ly/NurtureCourseInfo

Remember, we all learn how to do this, hopefully you’ll avoid some of the mistakes I made early on!

Much love,

Tess x

Why exactly am I so excited? Well some of it is a secret for now, but here’s what I can tell you … EXCITING NEWS! In addition to new online courses (announcement coming next week), I’m putting together a series of in-person events in Melbourne!

It’s been such an incredibly long time since I’ve been able to run workshops, and I can’t wait to get back into that space again. I’m planning something incredibly spoiling … think stunning views, expert catering, and a whole day of indulgence (which is how I think of time spent working ON our businesses instead of IN our businesses). If you keep your eye out, you might see a sneak peak of the venue when I inspect it next Wednesday!

What’s coming? … Workshops and working days … I’m planning at least a couple of events for the second half of this year. At least one will be a training day (think CEO Mindset on steroids) and at least one will be a working day (think No Quarter on speed!). They’ll be priced at around the $440 per head mark for a one-day event, and $880 for a two-day event. There’ll be a maximum of 20 people per event.

SO … if you’d like to be added to the waitlist for these events (I know you want all the details, be patient!), shoot a little email to my assistants Jess & Josie (hello@tesscrawley.com.au) to be first in line for a place at the table (literally) … we’ll add you to the priority list once all the details are on hand. I am genuinely so excited to be back in the room with you (and to meet some of you for the first time). The very thought of it makes my heart sing!

Much love,

Tess x

This week I’ve been speaking about this with my Like A Boss members (in BIG detail) and also introduced the concept to my No Quarter members. The key issues everyone is weighed down by seem to be: (i) A need to work “smarter-not-harder” after our past brutal couple of years; (ii) The need for several changes to how their businesses function in order to achieve this (time management, fee structure, recruitment, etc); and then (iii) complete overwhelm at how much work needs to be done with so little time and energy.

But here’s what’s a given … no one will achieve anything if their diary doesn’t have dedicated time set aside each week for them to work on these things. Hence the diary reshape. And that triggers a cascade of fear:

What if I can’t afford to take that time away from income generation? (Cue: fee structure discussion)

What if my clients can’t get their preferred appointment time if I take time away from client work? (Cue: discuss guilt-induced over-availability)

What if my team think I’m slack for not seeing enough clients? (Cue: discuss the role of being the boss)

Most business issues can be addressed in an orderly structure fashion when we have time to focus on them. But time doesn’t grow on trees. We need to TAKE it. We need to make it happen. So, have a look at your typical week. Identify how many hats you wear each week (business owner, client service provider, partner, parent, etc) and make sure there is a structure within your diary to support you to reliably be able to know which hat you’ll be wearing when, AND when you’ll reliably have time to work on your business (and no, NOT at 11:00 at night or on weekends!). Meanwhile, please be gentle on yourself. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Much love, Tess x

You already know what works to put you into a better frame of mind.

Do more of that.

And if you can’t find motivation, override it and take opposite action.

  • Don’t feel like walking? Go anyway.

  • Not in the mood to talk to anyone? Call a friend.

  • Feeling miserable? Watch a movie that always makes you laugh.

You get the idea.

You know what works for you. It’s just that sometimes we just can’t be arsed, right?

Decide. Then do.

Best wishes,

Tess x

One of the main stressors in modern life is not having enough hours in the day. Trying to juggle working from home and remote learning for those of us in lockdown magnifies the problem. It stirs up the background noise of stress around getting things done at all (let alone on time).

How’s your email inbox looking?

What about your bills?

How are you juggling remote schooling?

I find the biggest time bandits in my day are common to most people:

  • Distraction (including constant interruptions)

  • Procrastination (including social media)

  • Perfectionism (not getting anything finished unless it’s “good enough”, or not starting because it “can’t” be good enough)

  • Overwhelm (too much to do, no idea where to start)

What to do?

Use apps to simplify your day AND remove any apps from your line of sight that will interrupt your flow

  • Electronic shopping lists

  • Voice messaging and voice-to-text apps

  • “Hide” interrupting apps (social media, email, etc) off the front page of your phone (in a folder is best) … even better, remove them from your phone completely if you’re brave

  • Use Google plug-ins like the Facebook “newsfeed eradicator” so you can’t doom scroll when you’re working

  • Pomodoro apps like “Focus” to keep you focused (cos there’s nothing like a deadline, right!)

Structure your week into blocks so you can be focussed on certain things on certain days (this is my absolute sanity saver). Make sure you add uninterruptible time. I have a day each week where nothing is allowed to be booked in, so I’m free to think, plan, focus, or even (gasp) take a day off.

Take control of your time in simple ways to feel organised and less overwhelmed. This will help you balance your time at work and at home … even in lockdown!

Best wishes,

Tess x

“Why am I so tired all the time?” This is a question I hear all the time at the moment … and one I often ask myself! You might have seen media articles talking about ‘fatigue’ and ‘languishing’, but what’s it all about? And why can’t we just “pick ourselves up by the bootstraps” and soldier on like we used to?

Well, let’s stop for a minute and think about all the things we’ve been dealing with for the past couple of years … and don’t forget to include the 2019 bushfires. We’ve not had a break since.

  • Bushfires

  • National lockdown

  • Work from home

  • Remote Learning

  • Closed borders

  • Lack of proper holidays

  • Rolling lockdowns

  • Vaccine rollout

  • Delta

  • Inability to plan

  • Protests

  • Interrupted education

  • Earthquake

  • Interrupted goals

  • Uncertainty about the future

Think of your coping resources as being like water in a bucket … the impact of even one of the things we’ve had to deal with over the past two years will poke a hole in the bottom of that bucket. Now imagine that before you have the ability to repair that hole and refill your coping bucket, each of the other stressors from the past two years starts poking holes in your bucket. What happens to your coping resources?

They run out of course!

And this is the key with the fatigue we’re all feeling. We’ve not had the opportunity to stop the holes being poked in our coping bucket, let alone repair the damage and fill that bucket back up! We’re at risk of burnout on a grand scale.

What do we do about that?

  • Take mini-breaks each day

  • Get fresh air when you can

  • Focus on the things within your control and let go of the things you have no influence over

  • SELF-COMPASSION big time - you’re doing your best

  • Pick your battles

  • Get professional help if you need it AND don’t forget a medical check up (I know from personal experience that this fatigue is NOT helped by low iron levels!)

Be kind to yourself and remember … Rest IS doing something.

Best wishes,

Tess x

We all need to feel seen and heard, especially when times are tough. We need to know that when we’re struggling, others see our pain. This provides validation that what we are experiencing is real. We also need to know that our reaction to difficult times is not “crazy”, but a normal response that anyone in the same situation would also experience. This helps normalise our response and take some of the self-judgement out of the equation.

As mental health professionals normalising and validating peoples emotional experiences is a common aspect to our work with clients. It’s not a ‘treatment’ but an important element to laying the foundations for treatment to be effective, because it helps build trust. A fundamental component of the therapeutic relationship.

What if you can’t someone who’ll provide that normalisation or validation for you? Then it’s time to take a step back and provide that for yourself.

How? It involves a big dollop of self-compassion, and consciously tapping into viewing your situation through the eyes of others (not in a critical way, but in a more objective way) … How would your favourite teacher, best friend, respected colleague feel if they were in your shoes? How long is the list of things you’re trying to juggle right now? Would you expect others to be able to juggle that load without dropping any balls?

Normalise your feelings by gently reminding yourself that others experience what you’re going through and need help too … Do NOT minimise the impact on yourself just because “others have it tougher”. Remember, it’s all relative.

Validate your feelings by gently reminding yourself that it’s okay to feel stressed in stressful time, or sad about sad things, or anxious during times of uncertainty.

Be gentle with yourself. These are abnormal times, and big feelings are to be expected.

And of course … it’s normal to need help with overwhelming feelings too.

Take care,

Tess x

One of the easiest things we can do to improve the moment we are in (which can have the added benefit of refreshing our mood) is to grab a reset minute. What’s that? Something super simple that creates a pattern-interrupt when you’re in a bit of a mood fug.

Even something as simple as changing your posture or vocalising can do it.

  • If you’ve been sitting at your desk and feel your forehead stuck in a frown, stand up and give yourself a bit of a shake. It will reset you physically and refresh you mentally.

  • The same with vocalising - Been working silently for a while? Sing. Or yell. Or just speak out loud.

On a technical level changing our posture or vocalising activates different part of the brain than when we’ve been sitting silently in a fug.

Two of my favourites are super simple:

  • Kylie Minogue (or any dance-inducing music) plus dancing like a lunatic

  • Singing like an opera singer on steroids … ANY song that comes to mind I will turn into an aria. Van Halen? Yep. Due Lipa? Sure.

  • Both of these work on two fronts: Posture shift and Vocalising PLUS both make my family laugh (which ALWAYS improves my mood)

My top tip for reseting and refreshing if you can’t be a complete lunatic - and this is one I frequently encourage my clients to do:

  • Sit in a sunny spot (in your lounge room, in your garden, doesn’t matter where) and enjoy a cup of tea/coffee (etc)

This involves a posture shift (you’ve moved from wherever you were), a dose of Vitamin D from the sun (and some fresh air if you’re outside), and another great mindfulness trip - savouring the moment.

So, when you find yourself stuck in a mood you don’t want, or in a work-from-home fug, try these little reset and refresh hacks to shake the cobwebs loose and push your mood closer to the direction you’d like it to be in.

Remember, you can choose your mood, but sometimes you need to pull out the big guns. This is a good one.

Now excuse me while I finish my coffee in the sun.

Have a great day!

October is mental health awareness month. I’ve decided to bring some of my top tips for maintaining good mental health. A bit like cleaning your teeth to avoid decay, there are little things we can do each day to reset, refresh, and manage our moods.

Today’s tip is GROUNDING … What does this mean? If we think of how our emotions have the occasional potential to spiral out of control, escalating higher and higher into the stratosphere, it can be really helpful to know how to head off that process and keep your mods grounded on planet earth.

There are many ways to achieve this, and I’ll talk about some of them in more detail in coming days, but simple things like calm breathing techniques, mindfulness, and distraction can all help.

Grounding is often one of the first strategies I teach my therapy clients, because it is just SO useful in so many settings.

Have a wonderful day today,

The new financial year provides a great opportunity to spend time identifying and then nurturing important relationships to your business. Neighbours, clients, referrers, and staff … these are all relationships that contribute to the viability of your business. Look after them.

Ways to nurture important relationships:

A handwritten thank you card

Cross-referring to professional colleagues

Maintaining good communication

Marketing in ways that enhance knowledge and communication (not just sell, sell, sell).

Now is a good time of year to identify these relationships and touch base. (And it means you won’t get lost in the sea of Christmas cards at the end of the year!)

MONEY... We all drop the ball sometimes!

This time of year gets us laser focussed on what’s been coming into our businesses, and more confrontingly, what’s been going out.

We are forced to pay close attention to some truths about our businesses that we might not like. Perhaps we’ve been a bit stuck in a comfort zone with regards revenue streams. Or perhaps we’ve fallen into some bad spending habits. ahem

Whatever it is, you need to know this:

a) It happens to all of us

b) It doesn’t mean you’re a failure

c) Help is available

d) Now’s the time to make a plan

And when I say make a plan, we’re not just talking about “I promise not to buy so much stationery” … Your plan should include such things as regular meetings with your accountant, getting clarity around your budget, revenue forecasting, AND reductions in unhelpful expenditure (and so on).

I’m here to tell you I STILL drop the financial ball sometimes.

Which is why I’m always so grateful for the support team I have around me. They help me pick that ball right back up and start running with it again!

PERFORMANCE … When talking performance indicators, most people assume Key Performance Indicators - and then link these to punitive measures to curb underperformance. I’d like you instead to think of two types of performance indicators: Key Performance Indicators and CUSTOMER Performance Indicators.

Key Performance Indicators can be things like:

  • Number or referrals/enquiries per month.

  • Number of conversions (initial appointments attended or first sales)

  • Retention rates (number of sessions attended before client drops off)

  • Average session fee for appointments

  • Average sale amount

Go over these for each month and check for trends. These can be trends for staff performance, trends for “hot” or “cold” business months, and so on. Try to identify what’s driving the trends you identify. (Obviously taking Covid19 into account.)

Customer Performance Indicators can be things like:

  • First impression on the phone

  • Satisfaction with email responses

  • First impression when entering your premises

  • Satisfaction with getting their needs met by your business

It’s almost impossible for small businesses to get an accurate reflection on customer performance indicators, so I think it’s really important for business owners to touch base with what it might feel like to be a new customer/client/referrer to your business - try seeing it through their eyes. For example, is your phone answered by a human or an answering machine (my pet hate) or not at all?? Is the entry to your premises grubby or warm and welcoming?

Take time at regular intervals throughout the year to check in on all of these performance indicators.

Have you avoided marketing this past financial year? Too busy? Like, literally TOO BUSY? Scared it’s going to cost you time and money? I’m here to tell you all that is nonsense.

Many business owners tell me they don’t want to engage in marketing because they’re scared to have to turn business away. What does this tell us? They need to recruit, right? But there’s no staff to be found! And around and around they go.

Here’s the thing. Marketing your business isn’t just about generating more business. It’s about establishing a meaningful and relatable presence in the community. This means that your business becomes a trusted part of the landscape, a service that your community grows to know, like, and trust.

And this reaps benefits in … you guessed it … recruitment!

So, if you’re desperate for staff and you don’t have a presence on social media (for example), how are these magical staff going to find you? And why would they choose you over the thousands of others in the same boat as you? You’re scared you’ll have to compete on money, but you can’t afford that. So you keep drowning in too much business, too little time, and not enough help. It’s the businesses that potential recruits feel they know (via social media mostly) who have the edge in this market.

Marketing helps in so many areas of your business and it doesn’t have to be overly time-consuming or difficult.

The easiest thing in the world is to do a one-minute livestream each day talking about your day, talking about your team, showing people what you do, telling them a funny story, or walking them around your premises.

One. Minute.

The only thing stopping you is you. Sure it will feel weird the first few times, and then suddenly it won’t feel weird anymore. It will become a quick and easy part of your day, and you’ll soon learn how to repurpose those little videos for extra content. All of it authentic. All of it letting your ideal staff, clients, or referrers get to know you better.

No more excuses please.

Huge thanks to the more than 60 people who completed my survey (it’s still open if your keen).

Key issues for most people:

Time Management

Staffing

Marketing (this was very telling!)

Delegation

Revenue Streams

So what am I doing about it?

Luckily I’d already started putting together my CEO Mindset training program, which covers all these issues, and a bit more!

Today I launched my CEO Mindset training, which will run in July (2021). What is a CEO mindset though?

Here's a snippet from a video I recorded in 2019 where I explain the CEO mindset concept.

Since this was filmed, I've moved to Melbourne, sold one of my practices, started a third business, and employed more people to help me grow in each of my businesses ... all things I predicted as early as 2018, a classic example of strategic CEO-style visioning!

Whatever your vision for your business, the content we'll cover in the CEO Mindset training program will see you taking strategic steps forward towards bringing that vision into reality.

In this six-week live online training, we will tackle some of the biggest issues I'm asked about by business owners like you.

  • Time management

  • Staff recruitment and retention

  • Marketing

  • Money Mindset

  • And much more!

Most importantly, when you walk away from this program you'll find that you start thinking more strategically, just like the visionary CEO that I know you are!

Sessions are recorded in case you can’t attend live.

Cost is $497

Sessions start on July 29 at 1:00pm (Melbourne time)

I was asked a great question this morning from someone launching a new practice. In summary the question was this: “How do I know when to set my fees at the same rate as others?” There are so many factors that go into fee setting, but the first thing you need to factor in is your own money baggage.

Do you feel “worthy” to charge the same as your colleagues?

Do you feel you “deserve” to earn a decent living from your labours?

Do you feel that you “should” put the financial welfare of others before the viability of your business? (That’s a BIG question, I know).

Where did you money attitudes come from? Family? Peers? Colleagues?

It might be time to understand what an “industry standard” means, why it’s important when it comes to setting your fees.

  1. Understand what your industry’s recommended fee is, and what it’s based on

  2. Don’t undercut your colleagues

  3. Don’t diminish the value of your profession

Here are some other things I want you to think about, journal on, or get some coaching around:

  1. How do you feel gratitude towards those who charge more and those who charge less than you?

  2. How do you match your fees to your values WITHOUT going broke?

  3. What are the unforeseen money disasters lurking if you DON’T start as you mean to finish? (Remember, it’s harder to raise your fees than to set them appropriately in the first place).

  4. BE CAREFUL whose opinions you listen to.

You’ve already got all the training, knowledge, and skills you need. All you need to do is trust in that, and share it!

We all worry about “getting it wrong” sometimes. But the reality is you have conversations within your area of expertise every day. So why is it so hard to do the exact same thing with an audience?

Scared of embarrassing yourself? Maybe.

Scared of being judged? Probably.

List all the reasons you’re an authority in your field:

Years of training

Money spent on professional development

Years of experience

Number of people helped

And so on...

Now tell me again why you’re scared you’ll say something dumb.

See? There’s no truth to your fears. So stop letting fear call the shots.

And if anyone judges or criticises you for sharing your expertise freely, send them my way! I’ve got your back!

Have an amazing evening,

Tess x

It Can Take Time to Find What Suits Us in Our Businesses.

In business and in life, we can spend an awful lot of time faffing about with different styles trying to figure out which one works for us. We’re familiar with ‘body shape’ fashion advice, but what about the right fit for your business?

Sole Trader or Company?

Employee Model or SubContractor Model?

Don’t assume that just because others are doing things a certain way, that it must be the “right” way to do it.

There are so many elements to what makes your business feel like it’s the right ‘fit’ for you … so don’t be afraid to try on a few styles and a few sizes to find your unique business style.

Once you’ve found your ‘fit’ your business will be more enjoyable and growth (whatever that means for you) will come more naturally.

Good luck!

I’ve had a few conversations this week about delegating. What to delegate, who to delegate to, how to delegate, and all of the feelings that delegating triggers in us.

What to delegate:

  • Takes you don’t enjoy (yes, this is allowed!)

  • Tasks you never seem to get to

  • Tasks that misuse your time

  • Tasks that deplete your energy

Who to delegate to:

  • People who’ll get the job done (obviously)

  • Is there a member of staff who can do the task?

  • Do you need to hire admin support?

  • Do you need to outsource the task for a fee?

How to delegate:

  • Seems obvious, but ask the person to do the task (and don’t expect them to mind-read that you need the job done)

  • Show them how you’d like it done;

  • Let them get on with doing it

All the feels:

  • Feelings of guilt and laziness are common when we’re new to delegating

  • Give yourself a pep talk to overcome these feelings

  • Remember, the person you’ve delegated to is there because they want to help you

  • TRUST that the person will get the job done

  • ACCEPT that the person may not do the task the same way you would (that doesn’t mean they’ve done a bad job)

  • STOP giving in to the temptation to micro-manage

  • IDENTIFY which of these feelings are interfering with you being able to delegate successfully How is this all related to fees?

Once you know who you need to delegate to, you can then determine what that’s going to cost you. Is it a new staff member?

Or an external agency? What will that cost? How does that work within your current revenue streams?

If you NEED the thing done but can’t AFFORD to delegate - you’re not charging enough to support your business.

Consequences of this? You’ll end up adding the thing to your never-ending to do list. And hey presto! Burnout city is your next destination.

So delegating successfully contributes to the longer-term viability of your business, meaning you get to help more people.

Win win!

Let’s talk about “emotional whiplash” ... If you’re in Melbourne you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

We’ve all learned to be flexible during this pandemic, but sudden changes in quick succession are exhausting.

They also remind us how little we can plan at the moment, which is additionally stressful in itself.

Feeling that we don’t have control can contribute to anxiety. So focus on the things that are in your control, and practice some psychological flexibility and acceptance around the rest.

Above all, be kind to yourself.

Stepping outside your comfort zone pushes all sorts of buttons. It might be fear of judgement, fear of embarrassing yourself, fear of making a mistake.  But as I told my son this morning, fear of something that hasn’t happened yet is wasted energy.

My philosophy (based on years of stepping outside of my own comfort zone, and encouraging others to do likewise) is that it’s better to do the thing first and worry about fear later - because the thing we fear (judgement, embarrassment, mistakes) almost never happens! (And if it does, you’ll deal with it, cos you’re amazing like that!)

So if there’s a challenge you’re facing in your business that you’d like to overcome, but it means stepping outside your comfort zone, take it from me, you won’t die.

Do the damn thing!

Do. Learn. Grow.

Overcome fear.

Take action.

It’s so tempting to wallow as we enter lockdown, and believe me I’ve been tempted today (pyjamas until 1:00pm anyone?), and because I get it, I’ll be the last person to tell you to pull up your socks and crack on.

Today I’m going gently. I’ve got healthy food in the fridge and plenty of snacks for later. I’ve got a coffee in hand, music in my ears, and a breeze on my face. I’ve got the sound of my sons chatting and laughing together. And I’ve got endless entertainment from watching the dog try to sit on the cats (I kid you not).

Allow yourself some grace to do whatever brings you a little smile today.

Meanwhile if you can support your local grocer, restaurant, cafe, florist (etc), please do. This is especially hard on the small businesses in our communities.

Stay strong. I’m proud of you.

This morning I was ashamed of myself for yelling at my son for something he didn’t do, then swearing like a trooper because Siri wouldn’t give me the directions to where I needed to take him for his swimming carnival. Mother of the Year I was not!

Whether I woke up on the wrong side of the bed, or was just exhausted after the intensity of the virtual retreat I’ve been running, I don’t know. But the point is, we all have our less than ideal selves that pop out from time to time.

It’s not THAT it happens, it’s what we do WHEN it happens that matters.

Self-compassion, humility, and of course authentic apology are all key.

And my point for you is simply this, you and I are both human. Warts and all. And that’s okay.

Go gently. x

I am in Lockdown in Melbourne. In contrast, Gerda is likely to see an influx of tourists in her neck of the woods in Queensland as borders there have reopened. We could not be in more contrasting circumstances if we tried at the moment!

So, today Gerda and I talk about how businesses can learn from the experiences of those of us in Melbourne who are in Lockdown 2.0, because at the very least, Melbourne is showing us that further lockdowns are a very real possibility for all of us.

It's important to stay consistently visible, it's important to implement creative strategies to remain viable, and it's important to not assume this pandemic is going to be gone any time soon.

Think of the clever ways you implemented your services during Lockdown 1.0, and then consider how you can ensure these elements of your business remain a permanent part of your suite of services.

This will help protect you in the event of your own Lockdown 2.0, Lockdown 3.0 and beyond. And if there are no further lockdowns (fingers crossed!) - bonus!

Stay well, stay safe, and stay supportive of one another.

And if we can’t get to know you, how will we ever get to trust you?

Steady as she goes. In the face of so much community anxiety, we need to remember our roles as “captains”. As we navigate these choppy seas, we have ways to do so safely. We might not know how long our journey will be. The navigational charts may not be clearly plotted.

But we have sails to help us move forward. We have a rudder to hold us steady. And we have an anchor to hold us safely in harbour when needed. As leaders and business owners we are captains. We can help ease the anxiety around sudden changes being foisted upon us ... by holding our own ships steady, staying our own course, being responsive not reactive, and maintaining our own wellbeing to stay for duty. Hold steady, Captain!

Two years ago today I embarked on a solo journey to Las Vegas. It was a seemingly crazy decision to travel to the other side of the world for what was ultimately a three-hour event.

The lead up to me taking this journey was just as powerful as what followed … and what followed was incredible.

If I had not trusted my own inner voice telling me I HAD to take that journey, not only would I have missed out on all the good stuff that followed, I may never again have had the opportunity to prove to myself so resoundingly that my instincts are trustworthy.

Sometimes our inner wisdom screams and shouts, trying to get our attention. But we don’t listen. Instead we override that inner voice and defer to “rational” thought instead. Lists of pros and cons. Advice from others. Ignoring our own instincts because we couldn’t possibly be right, right?  When was the last time you trusted yourself enough to do something that seemed crazy or irrational? Because sometimes that crazy irrational thing is the wisest move you’ll ever make.

In this episode of The G&T Sessions, Tess and Gerda talk about the levels of fatigue and the struggles with motivation that so many are feeling at the moment. It's been getting to us too! We talk about business innovation and how isolation has challenged us all to do things differently rather than insisting on "the way things have always been done". Everyone is doing big days amid lots of stress and LOTS of juggling, so recognising the need for taking downtime is so important right now. Be kind to yourself. No judgement! Keep in mind what's reasonable to expect of yourself in these strange times that have no clear end in sight.

When you’re used to being progress-focussed and conscientious, it takes a lot to pull your foot off the accelerator pedal. But sometimes that’s your smartest next move.

In isolation, we’re all juggling. Juggling working from home and educating from home. Juggling the desire to go out with the need to stay in. Juggling the sense of overwhelm with the desire to just say “fuck it”! Juggling exhaustion with peddling faster to keep our businesses afloat.

The most common thread of conversations I’ve been having with business owners lately is about this juggle.

The first month of lockdown was met with panic in the small business community. How can I pay my staff?

How can I stay open?

Will this destroy me?

And then we started seeing some of the fanciest footwork I’ve seen in a long time.

Small businesses weren’t just pivoting, they were pirouetting!

And now we’re starting to hit a wall. That constant push forward has been equal parts exciting and draining, as has the constant wobble of balancing on ever-shifting sands.

Throw into the mix the need to home educate your kids? WHAM! You’re one step away from burnout.

Lower your expectations within at least one area. Accept a little under-performance, compared to your usual standard. Be okay with resting. And your kids won’t die if they have a disrupted education this year. They’re learning to be more connected family members, to be inventive, and to understand the bigger world in a new way.

Go easy. You’re doing an amazing job, but you don’t have to be perfect!

Much love, Tess x

Business is a roller coaster, not a merry go round .

Here’s the lesson from today’s book chapter-writing exercise:

You must think ahead, even in times of change. You must have some sort of vision for the future. You must accept that business is full of ups and downs.

When you accept these things, and step into a CEO-style way of thinking, instead of being frustratingly stuck in daily operations, you’ll embrace the opportunity for innovation that has inspired so many creative small business owners during this time of Covid19.

Challenge your own assumptions about how your business can function. Look outside your industry for inspiration. Celebrate ingenuity.

And above all, #SupportSmallBusiness

In this episode, Gerda and Tess talk about the criticism that some business owners face when making big business decisions. In these crazy times of Covid19, the need for business owners to be creative and to determine what works best for THEIR business has never been more crucial. Many businesses are doing an amazing job of this, and it's exciting to see just how creative small business owners really are. Unfortunately, we also see many business owners being criticised for making decisions that others might not agree with. We talk about how "playing the ethics card" doesn't make your stance right and someone else's wrong. At the end of the day, compassion and understanding and support for each other are more important now than ever before.

It takes courage to do what you do.

Being a business owner means living with risk. Risking your finances, risking your time with family, risking criticism and judgement.

So why do we do it?  Sometimes it’s passion, sometimes it’s “genetic”, sometimes it’s the thrill of the ride.

Underneath it all, it’s because we believe in our mission (even if we can’t always articulate that well).

And just as it takes courage to BE in business, it takes guts to STAY in business during tough times.

So here’s to all of the business owners doing it tough, being brave enough to innovate, and putting it all on the line to keep going.

I’m your biggest fan!

So we’re beginning to get used to being cooped up at home with the whole fam, movements restricted to only a few essential outings. Perhaps you’re still working in an essential role, perhaps you’re in hibernation.

Let’s pause for a minute and ask “how’s your mood been?”

It struck me yesterday when one of my kids dropped his bundle over the start of the new school term here in Melbourne (which, let’s admit, was a total shitshow) that he had been carrying a lot of stress, worrying about how school was going to look.

All I can say is he’s still in his pajamas... 24 hours later (mother of the year!). But what about YOU?

If our kids are exploding with emotion, what are you holding in?

I noticed in myself the other day that I just COULDN’T.

I couldn’t listen to messages on my phone.

I couldn’t look at my email inbox.

I couldn’t look at comments or questions on my social media posts.

I. Just. Couldn’t. That night I had a teary outburst of my own. Worried about my grandmothers, both in their 90s, both living alone, both in Tasmania where I can’t visit. Worried about the northwest of Tasmania where two hospitals have been shut down and over 5000 people have been put into mandated isolation after an outbreak there. It’s where my father’s people are from. It struck a worried chord in my heart.

But they were just the outside reasons for my mood, which had been flat for days. They were just the “excuses”. The real reason was that I’d been burning the candle at both ends, and in the middle, trying to do all the things.

I’ve just sold a business, but am emotionally very much engaged in its ongoing success. I’ve got business coaching clients, some of whom are worried about where their businesses are headed. I’ve spoken to more people who’ve been in tears themselves lately than I can count. I’ve got children stressed to the back teeth. I’ve got a husband who’s lost his job.

And that’s before I even contemplate my own needs. And that’s what got me wondering today about you. How are YOU travelling?

YES, YOUR YEAR 12 WILL BE DIFFERENT to what you planned. But that doesn’t mean your life will be worse.

(And why your parents shouldn’t worry as much about your results.) 🔥

I finished Year 12 with NO PRE-TERTIARIES. Not only that, my final report card listed subjects I didn’t even study! Did I die? No. No matter what happens this year, your Year 12 results won’t define who you are. They won’t dictate what you do with your life.

There were many reasons why I didn’t complete any pre-tertiary subjects in Year 12, but mostly - just like you - it was down to an intensely stressful year impacting my ability to concentrate and stay focussed. S

o I chose to just finish Year 12 doing the subjects that brought me joy - English literature and fine art.

My journey towards becoming a clinical and forensic psychologist wasn’t a straight line. Neither is life.

I did AMAZING things before becoming a psychologist. Things I wouldn’t have done if I’d just followed the Year 12-to-university path I’d assumed I would take.

So, if your Year 12 doesn’t pan out the way you’d planned, it won’t be “the end of life as you know it”. It will be the beginning of your next grand adventure!

So as you embark upon this next phase of your Year 12, remember it is just that: YOURS. Make of it what you want. Study hard by all means, if that brings you joy. Focus on the subjects you love, if that brings you joy. Do whatever you can to minimise your stress levels.

And please. Try not to get too far ahead of yourself.

One step at a time, my loves! Remember, we’re all walking alongside you.

AND DEFINITELY point your parents towards this post if it will help ease their minds too. They’re probably just as worried as you are.

Maybe more so.

Much love, Tess x

In the wake of the current health crisis, how we communicate with each other, how we communicate within the media and social media, and how we communicate with our teams and our clients is so important.

Just as important, is how we talk to ourselves. ❤️

In this episode of the G&T Sessions, Gerda Muller and I discuss some of the key self-limiting beliefs many of us hold about our worth, our market, and our organisational structure. These beliefs, in turn, influence the actions we take (or avoid) in business. If we don't tackle these beliefs, and take the appropriate action, we really can't complain about how hard business is! (Tough love warning!)

In this episode, Tess and Mark talk about how business owners can use crisis points as opportunities for healthy change in how their businesses operate. In the face of CoronaVirus and the potential operational and economic impact on businesses, this is a timely discussion. Of course, there are still plenty of laughs throughout.

Boundaries are so important in business.

Being clear on your niche. Not trying to be all things to all people.

Not being overly available. Preventing burnout. Maintaining interest. Focussing on positive relationships.

These are all areas where clear boundaries protect your brand and your wellbeing.

What are you saying no to today?

I received an update this afternoon from the Australian Psychological Society regarding Coronavirus. Coincidentally I also spoke with my Quiet Confidence Foundations group earlier today about some ideas for how to prepare our private practices for a potential outbreak in Australia.

I decided to also do a public live Q&A session on the same topic.

So, join me for my thoughts on some practical things you can do now to ready your private practice (without the fear mongering).

If you’re not in private practice, you will find some ideas relevant for you too.

Legacy bombs are like little landmines that you drop along the way in your business journey. You don’t know where you’ve dropped them, or even that you have. But trust me, you did.

And you never know who’s picked them up. Or when they’ll go off!

What the hell am I talking about??

Well, it’s a bit like reputation. Sort of. But not really.

Sorry to shout, but I’m feeling a bit passionate about this today.)

Afraid of making a fool of yourself?

Afraid of being vulnerable?

Afraid of looking narcissistic?

Afraid of spamming people’s newsfeeds?

And what do we know about fear?

We can overcome it.

We can tolerate it.

We can do scary things!

You might need practice.

You’ll probably suck to start with (I did!).

You might need some coaching.

Do what you need to do to make sure you can overcome your discomfort and tap into your courage to get your message out there!

Repeat after me: Deciding that small business is not for you doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you had the courage to try. It means you’re open to learning something. And it means you’re wise enough to recognise when it’s time to move onto the next thing.

BUT that’s not to say we quit when things are hard. Business IS hard. And if you’re passionate about what you’re doing, you’ll embrace the suck.  But if you don’t love it, if it doesn’t inspire you, it’s okay to change direction.

Get help if you need to. Be honest with yourself. And remember, as long as you’re learning, there’s no such thing as failure.  ❤️

New ideas can come from the craziest places. If you’re listening when they whisper to you, you’ll notice inspiration strike when you least expect it.

The secret is to make sure you’re listening and to harness that idea any way you can … and then take ACTION.

This weekend inspiration caught me unawares and really grabbed hold of my ankle.

The funny thing was, what I thought was a motivational quote, which sparked a whole series of ideas for me, was no such thing!

Me too.

It’s okay. There’s a damn good reason why …

You survived the pressure to review not just your 2019, but your entire past decade.

You survived the pressure to create your biggest ever goals for 2020.

You’ve tried to have a proper rest. And now you feel the pressure to return to work feeling rested, recharged, and ready for action. (GUILTY of contributing to that pressure!) So today I’m taking a bit of a sidestep to remind you that post-holiday-fatigue is a thing.

Well, maybe not an actual diagnosable thing, but a thing nonetheless.

And for Australians, this summer has heaped on a double dose.

Bushfires are still raging in various parts of Australia (with rain forecast for the fire grounds, please let’s hope it helps not hinders). There is consistent media coverage of the devastation of homes, communities, land, livelihoods, and wildlife populations.

We all feel frustration at not being able to do anything practical to help (well we can, but it might not feel practical to you … for example donating cash and donating blood are both very helpful and practical forms of assistance). And then there’s the “donation dilemma” with so many worthy organisations to support. Those not in fire zones may be struggling with air quality too.

Many Australians feel exhausted, whether in a fire zone or not. It has been and still is extremely draining. Not to mention traumatic.

So, if you are in a fire zone keep an eye on your mental health, and the mental health of your mates. Help is available. If you’re not in a fire zone, just take a minute to acknowledge how emotionally challenging this summer has been and be gentle on yourself if you’re finding it a struggle. Help is available for you too.

Take care of yourself. And if you need to plan a proper break when the fire emergency has settled down, pop it into your diary. Then perhaps you can support some of our affected communities with your tourist dollars.

Much love,

Tess x

In this episode of the podcast we talk about the mythology and demonising of “marketing”.

Like it or not, you’re in the business of sales, and as such marketing matters. Yes, you’re serving your mission. Yes, you’re pursuing your passion. Yes, you’re helping your community in some way or other. But in order to do that in a private business you need your clients or customers to know you exist.

That requires marketing. Or “communication”, if you prefer.

Gerda and I discuss the fears around marketing and ethics, fear of judgement, and fear of being “wrong”.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic too!

Much love,

Tess & Gerda (G&T)

No matter how much we grow in life and in business, there will always be things that trigger that “small” version of you. You know, the you that felt scared once upon a time?

The you that preferred to stay safe and hidden?

You know, THAT earlier version of the stronger you. So today, my “people pleaser” buttons got pushed. And when that happens I typically react in one of two ways.

  1. I over-compensate to please the people.

  2. I rebel and refuse to care whether or not the people are pleased.

Today it was about my kids, not my business, so I found myself swinging wildly between the two options.

Why did it matter?

We made the decision recently to home educate our kids. For lots of really valid reasons after lots of effort, stress, and tears (mostly mine) trialling other options.

And today was the day that we were to meet with someone very lovely from the education department. The aim was to see if we need any support, brainstorm any issues we’ve faced, that sort of thing.

Even though the goal was support, my inner people-pleaser firmly smashed the AM I GOOD ENOUGH alarm, and it was ringing loudly in my ears! I’m guessing you’ll recognise that feeling. Because you’re a hard-working, conscientious, goal-driven, vulnerable, risk-taker too.

What are my strategies for dealing with situations like this?

  1. Acknowledge it - “Oh there you are, pesky voice that I’ve not heard in a while”

  2. Don’t judge it - “Hm, this is probably pretty normal for home educators at this stage of the journey.”

  3. Get busy - “How about you focus on what you can control (whether there are any undies lying around the house) rather than the things you can’t (what others think of me).

You could apply this to business so easily.

Every time someone who’s opinion you respect has an “opinion” about your business.

Every time someone chooses another business to work with instead of yours.

Every time a team member decides it’s time to move on.

Every time you get one of those “interesting comments” on social media.

We all face this need for approval in various ways, especially when we are business owners. All our vulnerabilities come to the fore, right?

I think I’m almost as sensitive about my business (my third “baby”) as I am about my kids sometimes. Because really, it’s all about being “good enough”, isn’t it?

So, here’s a word to the wise:

YOU.

ARE.

GOOD.

ENOUGH.

And I absolutely have faith in you.

Much love, Tess x

The issue of fees has been a real theme this week.

What to charge?

How and whether to increase fees?  What does it mean to “charge my worth”?

The key factor to remember is that you owe it to your team, your clients, and of course yourself, to maintain your business’ ability to survive. Most businesses don’t.

Don’t get excited by being the “next big thing”. That won’t pay your bills.

Don’t buy into the guilt around being of “service” rather than profitable. You’re neither a charity nor a hobbyist.

Don’t listen to the fear of criticism from others because you dare to run your business like a business. Are those “others” going to pay your bills for you if you have a revenue shortfall?

It is on YOU to charge enough.

It is on YOU to help your team understand your fee structure.

It is on YOU to prove your value to your community.

And none of that means being the cheapest on the block, or going broke trying to be.

Show some respect for your business’ survival needs and charge according to reality, not fear.

Much love,

Tess x

How many times do I hear business owners talk about not feeling good enough? Or not feeling ready? Or not feeling like they have enough experience?

Daily. That’s how often this comes up in my conversations. Daily.

How you feel about yourself has nothing to do with your audience.

How you feel about yourself has nothing to do with your clients.

How you feel about yourself should have nothing to do with your business decisions.

There are lots of reasons why we might doubt ourselves. The most common causes are messages given to us in childhood and negative comparisons against our peers.

Here’s the thing, though. You get to choose.

You get to choose whether or not you’re going to believe those childhood messages.

You get to choose whether or not to engage in those negative comparisons.

You get to choose whether or not to focus on what you’ve already achieved (and how good that feels) or what you’re yet to achieve (and how that makes you feel).

You get to choose whether or not you let your self-esteem stop you from engaging in marketing (and other) efforts that will boost your business. I know you’re thinking it’s easy for me to say. It is. Because I’m WELL PRACTICED at disengaging from limiting beliefs when they pop up. I’m well practiced at deflecting negative self-talk when that pops up. I’m well practiced at resisting the temptation to negatively compare myself to others. It’s easy to talk ourselves down. It’s harder work (but not impossible) to learn the skills to take better care of our own state of mind.

STOP letting your self-esteem get in the way of strategic decisions that will help you grow both as a business owner and in terms of business growth per se.

LEARN the skills you need, and practice them OFTEN. Here are my Top 3:

  1. Stop sign - imagine a big red stop sign (or say STOP out loud) when you notice negative chatter swirling around in your mind.

  2. Distraction - when the negative thoughts are loudest in your mind, find something else to do that will derail that thought train and prevent you from falling down the rabbit hole of self-doubt.

  3. Evidence - remind yourself of the evidence readily available that you ARE good enough, that you ARE making progress, and that you ARE heading in the right direction.

If you’re struggling to do this alone, get help! Find a mentor, business coach, or a therapist, depending on your specific needs, to guide you towards confidence, courage, and self-belief.

Meanwhile, download my workbook “How to Slay Your Own Bullshit” (see below) for a good head start.

And above all, be kind to yourself.

Much love,

Tess x

With December almost upon us, now is the time to start organising our thoughts for what lies ahead in 2020.

I much prefer to do this in November / December, rather than January, because it helps me feel less overwhelmed in the pre-Christmas rush and more prepared for the year ahead.

Take time now to prepare your diary.

  • Block in all the known variables like business travel, conferences, training, birthdays, etc.

  • Give some thought to planning "static" elements to your diary - themed days where you focus on specific elements of your business.

  • Then put a little effort into creating a structure to your diary management that keeps you feeling organised (and less overwhelmed).

The three prongs to my system are pretty simple, and help me immensely.

  1. A big wall calendar allows me to see the year at a glance so I am on top of the bigger events that are scattered throughout the year. It also helps my family know what I'm up to.

  2. A week-at-a-glance diary allow me to see what's coming up over the next week or so, which allows me to plan for thinking time, project work, learning new skills, etc. I don't keep this rigidly updated, but most Sundays will spend a little time on it.

  3. My day-to-day, always up-to-date diary is the one in my phone. This is linked to all my electronic calendars and is where I put new appointments as they arise. This informs the Sunday updates to my week-at-a-glance overview.

And that's it. Pretty simple, but these three elements mean that at any time I can see what I've got coming up today, this week, or this year.

I'd love to hear what works for you!

Much love,

Tess x

Here’s how I’ve managed clients, meetings, and mumming today.

  1. Take 5 minutes to set your top 3 priorities for the day.

  2. Stay aware throughout the day of when your “unmoveable” things like meetings are so you can plan to use downtime productively.

  3. Keep unexpected important interruptions focussed and as brief as appropriate.

  4. Keep pen and paper handy to jot down thoughts and ideas as they come to mind.

  5. Take time (even just 15 minutes with a coffee) to flesh out ideas and nut out plans.

  6. Stay focussed during your chunks of uninterrupted time so you know you’ve achieved something productive.

And if you do drop some balls (let’s face it, we all do) be kind to yourself. You’re doing your level best!

Meanwhile, keep your eyes peeled! I’m working on a special offer of a “bundled” package of programs for you to access in 2020 at a very special rate.

Much love, Tess. X

When you feel like setting goals is putting too much pressure on yourself to “achieve”, it tells me you’re already overwhelmed by all that you have to do in your business. I know, because I’ve been there.

You feel pressured from all sides. You feel there are a thousand decisions (big and small) to be made. You feel isolated within your own team, because no one else quite “gets” the pressure you’re under.

You feel like you’re always chasing your tail. You feel hamstrung financially, trying to be wise for the future while knowing you need to meet the needs of today.

You feel guilty because you want to offer more to your team, but you just can’t. You feel guilty because you want to offer more time to your family. And on and on and on the list goes.

But here’s the thing. Taking time to nut out a bit of a forward plan will help you with the overwhelm. It will help you become more strategic in a number of ways.

Know the difference between what is your role and what to delegate. Know what can wait. Know what is strategically aligned to your goals. Know how to recognise someone else’s distracting priority (so you can say no). Know in advance the general structure for your days, weeks, and months. Know that you can take time out for your family. Know that you can have a holiday. Know that your business will survive if you turn your phone of while you do strategic planning. Know that your inbox can wait.

Treat goal-setting as a navigational mission. Your big picture goal is your ultimate destination. Your medium and shorter-term goals are your navigational aids.

And don’t worry about whether or not you’re ultimate goal changes in the future, I’d expect it to as you grow and learn.

Take an hour today with a coffee and your phone switched off to set yourself some goals that can act as your guide, your scaffolding, your structure to help you reach you bigger picture vision.

Much love, Tess x

This is the official first episode of our podcast, cheekily entitled "Everything That Shits Me About Being in Business, and One Thing That I Love" - or The G&T Sessions for short (that's G for Gerda and T for Tess, by the way!)

In this episode we discuss the excuses that business owners and other professionals use to not become more visible online (and yes, they are excuses that drive us CRAZY!).

And of course, we also talk about how this feeds into what we love about what we do.

We hope you'll enjoy this episode. Keep your eyes (on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram) and ears (on my podcast and Gerda's) peeled for more episodes as we aim for weekly episodes!

Much love,

LA-based Texan, Amberly Lago, is an amazing woman. She is a former professional dancer and athlete, and the survivor of a significant motorbike accident that saw her almost lose her leg. It has taken dedication and strength to recover from serious injury and live with chronic pain, but Amberly's sheer generosity of spirit has also led to a daily gratitude practice and a career as a motivational speaker. The title of her book "True Grit and Grace" pretty much sums her up.

I consider Amberly, to be a friend, and I hope this conversation for both of our podcasts will be the first of many. Here we talk about the realities of business ownership and keeping it real on social media, living with gratitude, and a host of other things.

If you'd like to know more about Amberly, you'll find her on Instagram @amberlylagomotivation or via her website https://amberlylago.com/ (make sure you download her daily gratitude journal).

Episode 2 - Origins of Business We're talking about the ups and downs faced by businesses in their very beginnings. The things that draw you into owning your own business, the things you don't see coming, and setting yourself up to charge a sustainable fee.

View Details

I’ve been away from Melbourne for 25 years. Even so, I like to think of myself as a local. But the reality is that so much has changed, and I find myself an alien among humans.

This is true of business too. It’s easy to feel like we know what we’re doing, that we are old hands. But the reality is that things move pretty quickly. Before you know it you’re out of your depth, feeling left behind, or worse, burnt out. . I’m always impressed when inexperienced staff know the limits of their knowledge and know when to ask questions.

So why do we more experienced business owners find it so hard to do the same? . Fear of looking incompetent? Fear of embarrassing ourselves  Fear of letting slip that we’re not actually all-knowing?

We need to take on the same humility we expect of our juniors and recognise our limits. We need to know when to ask questions. And we absolutely must know when to ask for help.

Meanwhile ... Wish me luck as I figure out the Myki system for Melbourne’s trams!

Much love, Tess x

How are you with setting boundaries with others? What about setting boundaries with yourself?? In our most recent conversation, Evan and I talked about setting boundaries, self-care, sleep hygiene, and Baileys Irish Creme! This is perhaps one of our more "psychological" conversations, but there are still plenty of laughs and lots of irreverence (mostly at my expense #eyeroll). I hope you'll enjoy this conversation, I know I did.

When you are thinking about starting a business, the choices can be overwhelming. Do I go it alone or bring in a partner? Should I start as a company or a sole trader?

You’re so scared to get it wrong that you hesitate starting. You’re so worried about making the wrong choice that you do nothing. Or you lie awake at night losing sleep over what might happen in the future.

Stop it! There is no set structure to how a business startup looks.

Sole trader. Solopreneur.

Small group business Partnership Co-operative World-dominating conglomerate 😉

The choice is yours. And what you choose today doesn’t have to be your choice forever.

Ask yourself this question ...

How do I feel about the idea of managing other people? This is one simple way of choosing your starting point.

Here’s another question ... What can I delegate? Get the stuff you hate off your plate so you can focus on the bits you love. This will help you maintain your energy, avoid burnout, and let you focus on the right kind of growth.

You can start your business in one guise and grow into another. Or your can go full boar to start with and then decide to downsize. You can start as a sole trader and then become a company (that’s what I did). You can do everything yourself or you can hire team. Or you can start with team and then decide to go it alone.

No one is going to take your first born child if you change your mind.

No one is going to put you in the stockade for trying one option then choosing another.

This is my point about business growth ... Growth is not just about how big your business gets, it’s also how you grow as a business owner. How you learn what works best for you.

It takes time to grow into your business ownership role. It takes time to learn what works for you and what doesn’t. It takes time to try things out, make mistakes, learn from those, incorporate that learning, and try something else.

Above all, there is not one-size-fits-all perfect model of business. It doesn’t exist. So stop looking for it and get out there and try. Something. Anything. Just try!

Much love,

Tess x

I’ve been reflecting on some of the things I’m grateful for. As I embark on the next phase of my professional and family life, ready to return to living in Melbourne, I’ve been thinking about what I’ve sacrificed, survived, and received over the past 25 years in Hobart.

And this morning I had a realisation … I am honestly grateful for the shitty times, as well as the amazing opportunities life in Tasmania afforded me. Why? Because those shitty times (and let’s face it, some pretty shitty people) taught me so much. I’ve grown through these experiences. And I’ve learned more and more about just what I’m capable of overcoming.

It can be hard to see how to be grateful when shitty stuff happens, I know. But here’s something I realised as a kid (with plenty of shitty stuff going down on the regular).

If I could wish away the shitty stuff, I would have also miss out on some of the good stuff that followed. As an adult I realised that would have meant never meeting my husband and never having my children (unless you ask my kids, who subscribe to the multi-universe theory of time travel, but we won’t go into that here!).

So what’s my point?

It’s simply this … after even the darkest times, we learn and grow. Even with the experience of traumatic events, which of course I wish we could all avoid, we humans are capable of post-traumatic growth (google it).

So here’s a little activity for you.

I challenge you to spend some time not only creating a gratitude list of the easy stuff (I’m grateful for my husband, my comfortable home, my kids, my blah blah blah) … I want you to really drill down into what you a grateful for having received as the result of surviving shitty stuff in your personal or business life.

We all have to deal with shitty times. And sometimes it takes a good while to be able to see what you’ve learned about yourself as a result. But it’s there.

Perhaps you just need to spend a moment of reflection. And gratitude.

Much love, Tess x

In this episode Tess and Mark take imperfect action to get this show on the road. We talk about the fears that stop us from stepping outside our comfort zones, the power of imperfect action, structure vs spontaneity in social media content, and more. Here we go!

I’ve had a couple of conversations with business owners this week that have raised this question from a couple of angles ... By “giving away” our knowledge and expertise on social media, are we doing ourselves or our profession a disservice?

Short answer is no. Longer answer is N-O. “But how does that gel with charging my worth?” ... is usually the next question.

Here’s how it works, in a basic nutshell.

  1. Charging your worth is about valuing the services you are selling in your business, valuing the time you’ve put into training in your profession, valuing your years of experience, valuing the risk you carry as a business owner, valuing the power of your reputation ... and not being afraid to charge for your services at a rate that is respectful of all of these things.

  2. Giving it away ... Providing freely available content on social media, or via your website, or through public events (etc) is a great way to offer value to your broader community on a grand scale. You as an individual, even your business as a collection of individuals, can’t possibly service EVERY SINGLE PERSON on the planet ... but that’s exactly the potential you have on social media - providing freely available information that is helpful and potentially life-changing to every single person on the planet. That’s a feel-good thing, right?

  3. AND by giving away so much of your knowledge and expertise and experience via blog posts, videos, public speaking (or whatever floats your boat), you will feel more comfortable with charging appropriately for the more ‘bespoke’ services you offer to your direct clients. And those clients will know of your service and whether or not it’s likely to be right for them because they’ll have seen some of your free content. Win win!

  4. BUT this does not mean you are a charity! Know the difference between 1:1, 1:Few, and 1:Many. Charge appropriately for the direct client-to-client or business-to-business work that you do. Provide exciting (to you and your audience) free content to your broader community.

  5. And most of all, have fun with it. Be rebellious, be entertaining, be informative. This is how you give VALUE to your audience.

Now ... tag me in your next livestream so I can cheer you on, rebels!

Much love, Tess x

BITE-SIZED CHUNKS WILL HELP YOU GROW YOUR BUSINESS FASTER THAN WAITING TO GET YOUR DUCKS IN A ROW EVER WILL!

Have you ever been on the verge of a big decision for your business? Have you been worried that maybe you’ll be biting off more than you can chew? Many business owners hit this particular wall when it comes to staff recruitment. But there are many areas in business where starting bite-sized will help you grow faster than delaying the inevitable.

Too often we let fear of success, fear of financial impact, and fear of criticism get in the way of make decisions. We procrastinate. We avoid. We battle on trying to make do.

Think about breaking big decisions into manageable chunks, and where possible consider a trial period if one is available.

Dive in and smash those fears!

Apparently Evan Carmichael is a comedian! 😂

In all seriousness though, I LOVED this conversation. We pick apart the difference between fear-driven work and procrastination and doing what you need to do to be professional.

Speaking of being professional, in case it needs clarifying, I don’t advocate for punching anyone in the face! (Just don’t call me Tessa! 😂) .

I’ve got a question for you: Who’s business are you actually minding?

If you are overly focussed on what others are doing, you can’t possibly have enough attention for what is going on right in front of your face ... i.e., in your own business.

It is fine to keep an eye on the market.

It is fine to keep an eye on current trends.

It is absolutely fine to make sure you stay current and relevant.

But really? Is that what you’re doing?

Or are you just being a nosy parker? Or a gossip? Or jealous? Or judgmental?

I ask you this because it is something I have wrestled with from time to time.

So these days I try to remember to ask myself ... Tess, (I said love, I said pet), what is your motivation here?

I love a good chat as much as the next person. But I know when I’m not acting within my values (Dignity First, Last, and Always), so if I catch myself being a Mrs Sharples (google it if you’re not as old as me!) I back off and give myself a reminder of where my focus (and my nose) should be.

In my own business.

Besides, it’s not funny and it’s not clever ... I’ve been the subject of gossipy scrutiny many times. Just remember, after a while it because obvious to a seasoned business owner when someone is sniffing around pretending to pose a genuine enquiry. And as with most things, it says more about the nosy parker than it does about the subject parkee.

So let’s all promise ourselves this one thing.

We will not descend to the level of the gutter sniping nosy parkers of this world.

We will not let our eye drift from the ball in favour of shiny gossip.

We will not reduce our values for the sake of a cheap snipe at others.

We are not perfect. I’m certainly not, and I’m the first to admit it. But we will try.

And in the trying, we will rise above.

Much love to you my perfectly imperfect friend,

Tess x

Do you find yourself posting to social media wondering “Is anyone even out there??”

On a logical level, you know it doesn’t really matter how many followers or views or likes your posts get, right?

You know who it matters to?

One person.

Well, okay two.

Most importantly it matters to the ONE person today who identified with your message. The ONE person who no longer felt alone in their experience. The ONE person you helped today.

And they might not even let you know.

They might be lurking shyly in the background, absorbing everything you post. Or they might have stumbled across your content for the first time. It doesn’t matter.

And that brings me to the second person who matters in this equation.

You.

If you’re passionate about your message, if you’re proud of the content you produce (give or take a healthy dose of imperfect action), if you stand by your content ... then you can stand proud my friend.

Stay consistent. Stay authentic. Keep putting your message out there.

Building an audience takes time. But it’s worth it to build your tribe of loyal followers (whether you know they’re there or not!).

Much love,

Tess x

Do these three things if you want to overcome overwhelm in your business.

🔥STOP holding everything so close to your chest

🔥You need to trust that others will do the job. They may not do it the SAME way as you, or as completely as you, or as quickly as you. But who knows, they may just do it BETTER than you, or they might innovate in a a way you’d never thought of. But it doesn’t matter. You can’t do ALL the things AND survive in the long term. Free up some time by delegating. And then TRUST. (You can always teach and then expand upon that teaching by correcting or shaping later.)

💥TAKE CHARGE of your diary

💥Effect a “static diary” approach to your schedule … Block out certain times of your week/day for certain activities. For me, Mondays are my CEO day where I meet with my team and plan ahead for my business. Tuesdays are Mentoring day where I meet with my mentoring clients. Wednesdays are my Clinic day where I provide therapy to my clinic clients … you get the idea. I also portion certain parts of my day for certain things - I get up early for a walk and early meetings with people in the US, etc - Late afternoons are for live-streamed videos - and so on.

💥 Make sure you are allocating “untouchable time” to allow yourself the freedom to think, plan, and strategise for your business without all the day-to-day interruptions. Spend an hour in a cafe with your phone turned off and just scribble down ideas and plans, and then map them out. You can’t explore these thoughts with constant interruptions from team members, phone calls, and email notifications!

💥 Quarantine time each week for family and time for yourself (you deserve it!)

🚀 USE TECHNOLOGY to your advantage.

🚀 There are so many ways you can use technology to your advantage to help reduce the nagging interruptions to your day, the persistent pinging of notifications, and to increase your capacity to concentrate.

🚀 Remove your email app from your phone, and make email a dedicated part of your static diary. A job to be done only on your laptop at certain times of day. If you have a PA, have them be the first filter that your email inbox has to pass through.

🚀 Use the Focus app (or a similar Pomodoro-style app) that helps you stay focussed on a particular task for a set period of time before taking a designated break. This helps you (a) stay focussed and (b) promotes self-care by ensuring regular mini breaks and longer breaks. You know how you work most efficiently close to a deadline? This kind of app gives you that same time-pressure focus to stay on task one block at a time.

🚀 Use a voice-messaging app like Voxer to allow free-flowing communication with key members of your team - avoiding inbox clutter and speeding up solution-focussed communication.

Prioritise the things that lighten your load so that you can focus on what is strategic and what energises you. You’ll be better for it and so will your business.

Much love, Tess x

This is a question I was asked before dawn this morning during an interview with European motivational speaker, Daniel Weinstock, for his podcast. My immediate answer was yes.

Partly because I have mentors, and I’ve grown significantly as a business owner through the work I’ve done since I started working with them. Partly because of the growth journey I’ve observed my clients travel along as I sit in the privileged position of being their mentor.

But mostly it’s because I believe so whole-heartedly in the dangers of remaining isolated as business owners and entrepreneurs.

We surround ourselves with those who love us, but not necessarily with those who get what we deal with on a daily basis as business owners.

It’s a tough and sometimes lonely road, if you let it be. If you stay stuck in isolation. And it is for this reason that I believe finding a mentor who you can resonate with and who you can trust is vital. Someone who’s been there, done that, got the battle scars to prove it.

If we stay isolated, we risk internalising blame for any business troubles. We begin to believe that we suck at this gig. We start to think it’s our fault. Over time this can lead to burnout and even mental health concerns.

But with the right mentor, we quickly realise that ALL businesses hit rough patches. ALL business owners have these doubts about their capabilities sometimes. We ALL want to run off hide some days. I have absolutely experienced this myself.

I have felt that I was utterly alone. That no-one in the world understood what I was facing during the darkest days of my business.

I felt it was all my fault. If only I was a better business owner I would have avoided staffing issues, financial stress, revenue dramas, marketing dilemmas, and that mountain of bills and avalanche of unanswered emails.

But I was wrong. If we step into business ownership, this is the gig. It is up and down, and frequently sideways. It will not be smooth sailing.

But be honest. If you wanted smooth sailing you’d still be in that safe government job, right? So, embrace the thrill of the ride, but take a buddy with you. Find a mentor who can keep you honest, help you steer straight, and laugh at your bad business jokes.

Otherwise, you just might drown. And we don’t want that! It is through the support, normalization, and validation that comes with working with an experienced mentor that we build a pressure release valve. And that right there is expert self-care!

Much love, Tess x

I had a fabulous chat with one of my mentor clients this morning about their decision to take a slower approach to building their business, in the meantime adding more strings to their bow through other means.

We talked about the fear that this meant failing in their business endeavors. We talked about the fear that their business might falter. And then we talked about alignment.

If you decide to do something different to what you’d planned - and it’s aligned to your big-picture vision - it’s not a failure, it’s a new goal If you decide to slow things down - and it’s aligned to your big-picture vision - it’s not a failure, it’s a change in pace If you decide to take time to consolidate new learning and seek more of the same - and it’s aligned to your big-picture vision - it’s not a failure, it’s a sign of wisdom.

Just because your goals have changed, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed, it means you’ve incorporated new information into your thinking and have shifted your goals accordingly.

This is where consistently revisiting of your big-picture view is important. This is why adding CEO Time (strategic thinking time) to your diary is important. This is why having support in your business owning journey is important.

If you are clear on your big-picture goals, and how you aim to get there, you will be better able to see whether or not the decisions you make today are strategically aligned to that vision.

And if they aren’t, then it is absolutely time to call yourself out on fear and scarcity if that’s what’s driving you.

Take some time today to revisit your big-picture goals. Sit in the sun with a cup of tea and think about where you’re heading, how you’re going to get there, and whether or not your recent decisions are aligned with that vision.

As long as you’re still moving forward towards your longer-term destination, a detour isn’t failure. It’s just a detour.

Don’t be too hard on yourself.

Much love, Tess. x

I’m always grateful to the posse of incredible minds that I have built over the last few years. No matter what issue, what question, what drama, or what celebration - I have someone I can turn to who will “get” that particular conversation.

I don’t need to tell you how important it is to talk through the tough stuff. It’s what keeps us afloat.

But did you know it can be utterly debilitating to not have anyone in your corner who can wholeheartedly cheer when you’re winning?

Our partners try, but don’t always fully get it.

Our family members love us, warts and all, but don’t really get it.

Our friends might give us a kick up the bum when we need it, but they don’t get it either.

You need a posse.

You need a squad.

You need a tribe.

You need a band of like-minded souls, crazy and wise and savvy enough to absolutely GET IT.

Because then you will truly be unstoppable. You will have truth talkers who will tell you when you’re barking up the wrong tree. You will have wise ones who’ve been there, done that, and don’t want you to make the same mistakes. You will have risk-takers willing to jump in right alongside you. Best of all, they’ll hold you accountable to your goals, they’ll keep you honest with yourself, and they’ll absolutely let you brag about all the good stuff.

Where’s your posse? Where’s your tribe?

What are you doing to invest in this special and precious area of your business owner role?

You know that to-do list you’ve got? You know the one? That one that never seems to get completed? It’s like being stuck in a hamster wheel, right? Endless. Monotonous. Not loving it!

More than financial stress (which is occasional), more than staffing stress (which is situational), the never-ending monotony of your never-ending list of never-finished tasks is what gets you the most stressed, even if you don’t realize it.

Because it’s death by a thousand cuts.

Because it’s like suffocating.

Because it’s like drowning.

Or being trapped.

So how do we fix this?

Before I answer that, let me ask you this: How often have you taken time out to appreciate all that you do?

And this: When did you last get real with how you spend your time?

Or this: When did you last fully appreciate all that you sacrifice, achieve, and risk on a DAILY basis?

I thought so. So here’s what I want you to do …

Spend the next week documenting at regular intervals throughout the day how you are spending your time. Image you’re a lawyer charging by the 15-minute increment and document what you’re working on.

Why?

Because this is exactly how you are going to catch all the STUFF that gets in your way. All the NOISE that distracts you from completing your important to-do list tasks. All the OTHER PEOPLE’S EMERGENCIES that derail your best intentions.

Not to mention all that time on social media, right? … cough cough … Do this so that you can fully UNDERSTAND how you’re spending your time. Do it so you can fully APPRECIATE all that you DO manage to achieve.

Do it so you can IDENTIFY all the STUFF you need to DELEGATE (ffs!).

I don’t want you to burnout, trapped forever in the hamster wheel.

I want you to appreciate your achievement and your time more.

And I want you to feel empowered to pull rank on the things that interfere with your progress, causing you undue stress.

Meanwhile, leave the hamster wheels to the professionals!

Much love, Tess x

I don’t care if you’re a “solopreneur” or running a team of 50, if you’re not able to fully own your role as the CEO of your business, you’ll stay stuck in overwhelm and the never-ending to-do list.   Why?   Because if you’re still stuck in the daily grind of the daily operations of your business, how will you see your big-picture vision?   And if you can’t see your big-picture vision, how will you know where you’re heading?   And if you don’t know where you’re heading, how can you possibly be strategic?   Without big-picture goals and strategic thinking, you’ll just keep spinning your wheels, feeling stuck, isolated, overwhelmed, exhausted, and ultimately burnt out.   So, you do need to make time in your week - EVERY week - to dedicate yourself to CEO thinking. To put on the big picture goggles, and find ways to get strategic. Step away from the daily operations, even if only for an hour initially. Make sure you’re uninterrupted.   It requires you to fully adopt a CEO mindset.   Own you RIGHT to take time away from operations to do some strategic planning. Own your RIGHT to delegate the tasks that don’t afford you the time to be the CEO of your own business. Own your RIGHT to call the shots and make the tough choices.   Own the FACT that all the responsibility and risk of your business sits on YOUR shoulders.  Be grateful to yourself for all the training, experience, risks and MONEY you’ve put into this business adventure of yours.   Own the FACT that, like it or not, you ARE the CEO of your business, goddammit!  If all this seems too hard, too “icky”, or you just don’t feel you’ve earned the right - GET SUPPORT. Find a coach or a mentor who can help you see the landscape that lies before you. Someone who can help you lift your head high enough to see the horizon. Someone who can help you navigate your way forward.  Of course, if you can do this for yourself, awesome! But never feel you MUST do this on your own.   There are no prizes for staying silent, staying isolated, staying hidden. There are no awards for taking the hard road.   Practice using the term CEO Time. Block it out in your diary. Own it. And above all DO IT!   Much love, Tess x

What being a finalist means to me and why I’m so excited for the awards ceremony tomorrow night, regardless of the outcome.

Firstly let me just say that I was always the kind of kid that had a rather Pollyanna-ish approach to things like awards,

“Someone has to win, it could be me, right?” ... but have never really been invested in the outcomes to things like this.

When I think back on this, I think I learned as a kid not to expect to win awards (because I never did).

School talent contests... sure I’d go in them, but never won National acting schools ... yep, auditioned aplenty, but never got in Photography prizes ... gotta be in it to win it, right? But never did.

It’s only since making the decision at 25 years of age to go to university to study psychology that I’ve found “success”, however you wish to interpret that word.

And it wasn’t because “someone’s gotta win”, it was because of two simple things:

a) It was the right calling for me, a perfect fit.

b) I worked bloody hard!

So when I “won” a first-class honors degree, it was because I worked hard. When I “won” a scholarship to complete my PhD, it was because I worked hard. When I “won” a major contract for my practice, it was because I (and my team) worked bloody hard.

And this is why I am such a proponent of the philosophy surrounding Growth Mindset - Success (in any form) comes when we learn that it’s not luck, it’s not innate intelligence/strength/looks, it’s not any fixed attribute - success comes when we learn it’s how we apply ourselves to our goals and to problem-solving that matters. It’s action. It’s tenacity. It’s support and encouragement from others. All these things matter!

So to be selected as a finalist in this year’s Allied Health Awards in the category of Australian Psychologist of the Year, means more to me than any other “gotta be in it” thing I’ve done before in my life.

Because the finalists were selected by professional peers who understand how hard ALL of us (all finalists in all categories of all the allied health professions) have worked.

And so tomorrow night I’ll be in a room filled with people I know really well, respect immensely, and some of whom have become very dear friends from within my profession and beyond.

Tomorrow night will be a celebration of all of the allied health professions, it will be a celebration of just how hard each of these incredible professionals have applied themselves to their goals, to their profession, and to the communities they serve.

So yes, let’s be honest, winning would totally ROCK! But in many ways, I already feel like I’ve hit the jackpot.

And if you’re a finalist at the awards, please come say hello, I can’t wait to congratulate you on just how hard you’ve worked!

Much love, Tess x

Today I had a great conversation within my Quiet Confidence Foundations mentoring group about (amongst other things) business niching.

I know you’re familiar with the concept of niching your clientele … focussing on your ideal client - the one’s that really energise you. And honing your message so they’ll recognise themselves and their own needs as a match for your service.

But something else struck me during this discussion.

It’s easy to inadvertently blinker your vision and assume that this is the only element of your service that is niched - the bit that matches your clients’ obvious needs (the reason they need your service in the first place).

It’s easy to forget that your niche also includes other aspects of your business structure that might appeal to specific sectors of your broader audience.

For example, are you open after hours?

Do you currently run without a waiting list?

Do you provide online services?

Do you offer longer sessions than the average?

What else about your service is a bit unique?

You need to take the blinkers off when it comes to these unique elements of your business.

You need to make sure you’re letting both your ideal clients AND your ideal referrers and EVEN your ideal future team members know about these special elements of what you offer.

Don’t overlook just how unique and special your service is.

Don’t overlook the opportunity to market these aspects of your business.

And absolutely don’t forget that your fee should reflect the uniqueness of those elements of your service.

Take some time today to sit down with a pen and paper and brainstorm ALL the facets of your business.

Then make sure you let your audience know about them.

Much love,

Tess x

Have you actually seen ducks?

Have you tried to get them to get (let alone stay) in a row?

No.

Well, it is never gonna happen!

Meanwhile … you could be taking action towards your goals!

Are you one of those people (I know I have been in the past) one of those people who waits until they’re a little fitter before starting an exercise program?

Never gonna happen!

Meanwhile … you could have been taking action towards your goals!

Or those who wait until they’re feeling better before seeking the help they need?

I get it.

Change is hard.

But if you are STILL waiting for all your ducks to get in a row, nothing will change.

Nothing.

SO you’re not silly. I know you know these things. I know that you know that you could take a nibble at taking action.

What if you took one baby step in the direction of change?

And then tomorrow you took another step forward? And the day after that you took another step forward?

You get the idea, right?

OR you could just bloody dive in boots and all because deep down I KNOW that YOU KNOW what you need to do.

You’ve just been waiting for those bloody ducks.

Stop it!

It’s not rocket science. It’s not even DUCK science! It’s simple. Dive or stay stuck. Your choice.

SO, what are you waiting for? CHOOSE ACTION!

I know you can. Because I believe in you. Now you just need to believe in yourself.

HOW DOES YOUR DAILY ROUTINE SUPPORT YOU?

I noticed yesterday that I was completely “off”. It was raining when I woke up, so I didn’t go for my morning walk.

When did a morning walk become central to me starting my day right? When did this become a habit that I needed to maintain? I don’t know the answer to that, but I do know that not going yesterday made it even more tempting to stay in bed this morning. But I got up and went anyway.

And thank goodness I did! Did you see the sun coming up over the Derwent River this morning (check out my Stories, I shared it for your benefit). Just glorious, and it set me up to be more productive today … and find time to build a snowman.

Yes. A snowman.

Something you may not know about me is that I’ve recently embarked upon the journey of home education. One of my kids has specific learning needs, the other decided to come along for the ride (why wouldn’t he, right?).

This has meant two key things: 1. Intense gratitude for the work I’ve put in over the years to build a business that gives me the freedom and flexibility I really need, and SUPER intense gratitude for my team that has helped me on this mission. 2. Having to drag myself kicking and screaming into being more structured in my day.

My typical defiant self has railed against structure. I’d rather be spontaneous. Go with the flow.

BUT if I want flexibility, counter-intuitively I also NEED structure.

So, my days now begin in a much more structured fashion than ever before!

Up by 5:30

Meeting at 6:00 (preferably while also out walking)

Morning walk regardless

Get the bulk of my day’s work done by 10:00 am

Focus on home lessons for a few hours

Afternoons are for physical activities and FUN

Get the rest of the day’s work done

Bed by 9:00 (at the latest)

Repeat.

Beyond this basic daily structure, I have a weekly format that I try to stick to.

Mondays are my CEO day

Tuesdays are for mentoring

Wednesdays are my clinical day

Thursdays are another mentoring day

Fridays are for content creation and planning and FUN

So today was a mentoring day. My work was completed by lunchtime. It was a stunning day so we went to the top of Kunanyi / Mt Wellington to explore alpine plants (botany lesson!), the views of Hobart and beyond, and the mountains we could see in the distance (geography!), and then we build a snowman (harder work than it seems - therefore PE!).

How will we manage to combine home education with my business? Through a combination of structure and flexibility. Predictability and spontaneity. Order and flow.

And LOTS of support from relevant others.

So, whatever you have on your plate this week, think about this:

  1. How do you start your day? What can you tweak to start you off on a better footing?

  2. How do you structure the days of your week and the hours of your day? Is there room for flexibility within that structure? Is there a balance?

  3. How do you end your day? Do you have a “knock-off time”.

  4. Are you getting enough sleep?

Here’s hoping you can put some of these ideas into practice to support yourself to find the balance you need in your life.

Much love, Tess x

p.s. If you need help finding the balance in your life as a business owner, OCTOBER is the kick-off for FIRESTARTERS (30 Days of single goal-focussed mentoring) and NO QUARTER (90 Days of Intensive Mentoring towards your broader goals).

YOU WOULDN’T STAND IN THE RAIN EXPECTING NOT TO GET WET … and yet you go into business ownership expecting smooth sailing!

It is not a statement on YOU if you hit rough patches in your business.

It is not a statement on YOU if you have unexpected staffing changes.

It is not a statement on YOU if economic forces necessitate a change in direction for your business.

It is not a statement on YOU if you can’t find the perfect new recruit.

It is not a statement on YOU if you experience ups and downs and sudden sideways twists in your business.

It is the very nature of BUSINESS that these things happen.

The ups. The downs. The floods. The droughts. The sideways lurches.

This is what you signed up for. Sorry to break it to you.

But it is not a statement on YOU.

HOWEVER, it absolutely is on you if you don’t learn and grow from these experiences in your business.

If you don’t generate multiple revenue streams, instead of all your eggs in one basket …

If you don’t recruit creatively and broadly to meet the needs of your community …

If you don’t upsize when appropriate …

If you don’t downsize when appropriate …

If you don’t seek support from peers and mentors …

If you choose to stay isolated, expecting yourself to have all the answers all the time … expecting yourself to magically stand in the rain and not get wet …

That, well yeah, that’s on you.

So, stop giving yourself such a hard time getting wet in the rain. It doesn’t make you a bad business owner. It makes you experienced.

And you can always get an umbrella if you need one!

Much love, Tess x

People tell me they are amazed at what I manage to achieve in a day. That I manage to get my message out and share my knowledge and still run two businesses … the list goes on.

But the reality is I’ve really had to wind back to simple basics over the past few months.

As I’ve gotten busier and my businesses have shifted and changed, I’ve been drowning a little. What previously seemed so simple to stay consistent with, has become a struggle.

Little things … Like doing a live stream and ensuring it ends up in all the places or putting out blog posts, or regularly keeping the podcast updated. Each task on its own takes very little time. But when I fall behind, it snowballs like you wouldn’t believe it!

And don’t even get me started on my email inbox! So, at last, I’m doing something about it!

Tomorrow my new virtual assistant starts her work trial with me.

This has been months in the making, because I was too busy to put together a job description for the agency to recruit from! But recruiting is done, selection has been made, and Lenie starts tomorrow!

I’m always encouraging my mentoring clients to delegate the tasks that contribute to them feeling snowed under, so I’m glad I can finally come clean that I’ve put my money where my mouth is!

Sometimes we all need to take time to stop and focus on that ONE thing that will act as our life preserver when we feel like we’re drowning. For me it was getting that job description done. For you it might be hiring that cleaner. Or putting out that recruitment ad.

It doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to be done. Right?

So, here’s to delegating and being honest with ourselves when we feel ourselves drowning just a little.

Get yourself a life preserver before you really are in over your head!

Much love, Tess x

I will repeat this message until I’m blue in the face. The stress, responsibility, financial risk, and sense of isolation common among business owners are not to be taken lightly.

If you struggle with isolation, if you struggle with finances if you struggle with the burden of responsibility if you struggle with the isolation if you struggle with ANY of it. Please know you are not alone.

I have struggled in the past, and no doubt will again. What has helped me get through the roughest patches is support from others who get it.

And here’s where I’m going to go all broken record on you.

You Do Not Have To Struggle Alone.

Find peers. Find a mentor. Find a colleague. Find a support network. Find professional help if you really can’t pick yourself back up.

Please believe you are not alone. Please believe the struggle is not a statement on your competence. Please believe there are many others like you. Please believe in tomorrow. Please. Believe.

The roller coaster of business ownership is unrelenting, but we persist because we believe in what we are doing.

And I believe in you.

Much love, Tess x

TIME SCARCITY

What it is, what it’s not, and how it’s screwing you over!

🔥🔥🔥🚀🚀🚀🔥🔥🔥

How much money would it cost you if I charged you $5.00 for every time you complain of not having enough time? How many times a day to you use lack of time as an excuse to not achieve something important on your to-do list?

Or, how often have you said no to a great opportunity, blaming lack of time as the reason?

It’s okay. I get it.

Time scarcity is my Achilles heel too. The difference is I’m now on the lookout for this BS excuse and DECIDING whether or not something is important to me or not. If it’s not a priority, fine. But let’s not blame “time” for that!

Telling ourselves there’s “not enough” of anything as an excuse or as a fear or as a limiting belief is a form of scarcity-driven thinking. Time scarcity is just another form of the scarcity mindset.

It is not that you lack time. You might lack organization. Or you might be unwilling to delegate. Or you might be scared to do the thing.

But regardless of the root cause, you actually have the same 24 hours as me, Richard Branson, the Queen, Beyonce, and the butcher down the road.

DECIDE what’s important in your day. DECIDE how to tackle those priorities. EMBRACE your choice to say no to things that aren’t a priority.

Then if it’s important to you, do the damn thing!

Much love, Tess x

FIND A WAY FORWARD

I know you’re tired. If you’re anything like me, you’re bone-tired! But there is still a way forward.

I know you struggle to find the time to do all the things. If you’re like me, you’re juggling business ownership with family life and wondering why you never find time for a haircut. And who created all this washing??

Like me, you’re human.

Also, like me, you’ve got the same 24 hours as we all do.

If you’re tired of feeling like you’re always complaining about how tired you are or how little time you have, shake things up a bit.

You don’t have to join the 5 am club, but maybe even half an hour earlier would let you start your day feeling more organized.

I know we shouldn’t “eat lunch at our desk”, and we should take proper breaks, but maybe as a business owner, you need to combine things a little to stay afloat. Perhaps eating your lunch in a park or a cafe with some time to think (without all those damned interruptions!), would allow you to feel like your day is staying on track.

And you know what? You won’t go to hell for having Uber Eats for dinner tonight if it means emptying your inbox and spending more time with your kids watching that movie.

Whatever works for you, do what you need to do to find that balance, that sense of sanity, that feeling of respite. Or just so you feel like you’re simply not drowning in it all.

You’re a business owner. You’re tough, you’re quick-thinking, you’re creative.

And you’re human. Never forget that!

Do what you need to do to shake things up so the path ahead, your personal way forward, remains clear.

Much love, Tess. x

his is a nugget of wisdom I gained during my discussion with Anthony Trucks last week. (Check out the Finding Proof podcast episode where I interview him about the similarities between parenting and business ownership, and between business coaching and being coached as an NFL player.)

If you are the sole or major revenue stream in your business, how much freedom and flexibility do you have?

If you don’t have others around you sharing the responsibility, how much freedom and flexibility do you have?

If your business can’t cope in your absence, how much freedom and flexibility do you have?

If these questions make you wince, do you really have a thriving business? Or do you have a job?

And it gets worse … If your business can’t pay you a decent income (in addition to keeping its nose clean), do you really have a business, or do you have a hobby?

Think about the systems and team you need to support you in order to ensure that (a) your business can not only survive, but thrive in your absence and (b) it can pay you a decent income along the way.

If you want your business to be a legacy for your family and a constant for your community, you really need to be thinking about these things too. So, which is it?

Do you have a business? Or a job? Or just a hobby?

I’ll leave that for you to ponder.

Much love, Tess x

At the crack of dawn yesterday morning I had the great pleasure to talk with Anthony Trucks, former NFL player and American Ninja Warrior competitor, foster care survivor, and business coach.

We talked about how business ownership is a lot like parenting. And in fact, he sees his role now as being like a "business grandparent"; helping his clients "birth their businesses" brings him great joy!

Anthony has some great approaches which I will hold onto - "You are not your business", "If you don't have freedom to move in your business, you have don't have a business, you have a job". And more.

I made an unexpected new friendship today. I love it when life throws joy my way, don’t you? We were supposed to be recording a podcast interview for my podcast, Finding Proof, but instead we just talked and talked and talked.

We talked about our shared journeys of being mothers and business owners. We talked about what it’s like when people let you down in business. We talked about some of the assumptions people make about business owners, and the reality behind that … for example, does it surprise you to know that I’m actually an introvert?

And we talked about what we could learn from each other.

My new friend is Amberly Lago. She’s from Texas, but lives in LA. She’s a Queen of Instagram, but a bit of a Facebook rookie. She’s got an incredible backstory (which we didn’t really cover today, we’ll save that for the podcast). And she’s just so delightful. She’s a mindset coach and a public speaker. And she’s really smart.

Amberly talked about how people often assume that as business owners, our world’s expand. People assume that all doors open to us. That we’ve got it all and more. BUT the reality is, as Amberly so eloquently put it, our worlds actually shrink.

We have less time for friends, because we greedily hoard any spare time for our families.

We have fewer people around us who “get” what we do or why we do it.

We have fewer people to turn to who can normalise our journey.

As so the dark side of the business owner journey is that over time you begin to feel increasingly isolated.

This is a massive psychological issue for business owners. Especially in difficult times when we feel that we are truly alone and in the dark. We internalise difficult times as being personal failures, instead of recognising them for what they are - the normal ups and downs of business.

We feel like failures instead of feeling like experienced ship’s captains of a boat navigating choppy waters - just like every other ship’s captain experiences from time to time.

So today was yet another magical moment of connection between two likeminded business owners, social media boss ladies, and public speakers. We “got” each other so much we didn’t get around to recording the podcast episode!

The great thing about that is we get to do it all over again, but this time for your benefit!

I have a feeling Amberly and I will be having many more conversations as time goes by.

We’ll both be bringing you along for the ride, so you’d better follow us both - on Instagram and Facebook and wherever else you can find us! This is going to be fun!

Much love,

Tess x

How did you learn to become a business owner? And is that even what you call yourself? How do you describe yourself? A helping professional? A private practitioner? Why do so many of us find it so hard to acknowledge the title "business owner"?

It took me years to accept this title for myself, because it felt "icky" as a psychologist, a helping professional, to think of myself in these terms.

But you know what? Since I've embraced the idea that I am a business owner (because I actually am, just ask my employees!) I've been open to all the other ideas relevant to business owners. Sales. Marketing. Profitability. Customer Service. These aren't terms that psychologists are taught about at uni.

What about your area of business? Were you taught to embrace or shun these terms? How much do these terms trigger you? Why?

Thinking about this might just shed some light on your inner barriers to success.

Being your own boss. Owning your own business. Having all the flexibility in the world. Calling all the shots. Sounds great, doesn't it?

But who do you talk to when things get tough?

Business ownership can be incredibly isolation, adding to the stress and the pressure. But if you can find ways to break through that isolation, it can add immeasurably to your resilience as a business owner - which is not only good for you, it's good for business!

This might not be pretty, but it will be real.

(Warning: There may be some LANGUAGE!) #TessBomb

At 6:30 this morning I had a meeting with Steve in New York. He’s my agent, but more than that, he’s someone I care about. This morning he held up a mirror for me to see myself for what I am. And I’m ashamed to say that what I saw didn’t make me happy. There were tears.

Despite my success.

Despite my “eternal optimism”.

Despite my authentic care for you.

I’ve failed.

I’ve failed to let you in. I’ve failed to be clear in what I tell you about what I struggle with. Because we all have the SAME struggle. But I’ve not shared mine with you.

You don’t need to hear all my dirty laundry, but you do need to know that YOU are not alone. You fear criticism. So do I. You hate being judged. So do I. You secretly yearn for external validation. So do I. You carry the baggage of your childhood. So the hell do I.

It’s really not enough for me to simply write this for you though. It’s not good enough to sanitise this pseudo-vulnerability. If I’m going to help you on your journey, I need to reflect your experience for you to see. I need to let you in.

I can’t help you if I’m not being real, not allowing you to see my vulnerabilities. Because how can I help you if you can’t recognise yourself in my experiences, my vulnerabilities, my challenges, my wins. How would there be any relevance for you in my message?

So this will be an emotional video. But it’s me, in all my unvarnished emotional honesty. I’m letting you in. And if it’s too much for you to tolerate, too much sharing for you, then I’ll understand if you need to step off the bus. Because I’m NOT everyone’s cup of tea. I never have been. And that’s okay. It’s time I practice what I preach and embrace that!

And if you stick with me, I promise to do my best not to let you down again. No one likes to fail, least of all me. So I will use this moment to inspire me to do better. For myself and most of all for you. Because that’s why I’m here.

Finding Proof Live Show Ep. 19 (10 Jan 2019)

Let me step you through the Top 3 things I said yes to in 2018 that were crazy on the surface.

Luckily I played scientist AND listened to my inner wise voice that was yelling at me to take these opportunities by the horns!

By saying yes to these opportunities, I claimed my seat on the express train for growth and new adventures.

You can easily overlook great opportunities. You can easily ignore your inner wisdom, or you gut feelings. But I encourage you to trust the instincts that have seen you right so far.

Consider the risks and the benefits, but sometimes you just need to say yes!

View Details

How can I advise you on the one hand to trust your instincts, while on the other hand tell you to be a scientist in your business? Easy. I incorporate both! How? By using a psychological strategy called "wise mind". It's easy, you can do it too.

View Details

Be a scientist in your business. Formulate a hypothesis, test it out, incorporate what you’ve learned. Repeat.

If you can't step back from the emotions sometimes and dispassionately assess what you've learned and how it will inform future directions, how will you grow?

This was a cracker of an episode of the FINDING PROOF LIVE SHOW. It followed a rather interesting week where I not only faced some astonishing criticism (which I only let sway me for 24 hours!), but I also received some incredible coincidental validation and encouragement, which only served to further embolden me!

It all comes down to fear of criticism. And acceptance that you WILL be judged if you're courageous enough to choose your voice over your comfort.

Understanding that you WILL be judged takes an abundance mindset and the ability to stay focused on your big picture plan. Having a social media presence will open you up for criticism from others, whether it's because they don't understand what you're doing, don't like what you're doing, or worry about what you're doing.

But social media is an increasingly important part of any modern business. Even the CEO of my profession's governing body has stated that social media must be at the forefront of our endeavours, in order to stay connected with our community.

In this episode, I step you through how I stay strong in the face of judgement and criticism, and I share some stories from others as well, so you can stay strong too.

Because you will be judged. It's a given. But that's okay.

Episode 36 of the Finding Proof Podcast sees me interviewing Clay Cockrell. Clay is a licensed clinical social worker, entrepreneur, actor, and theatre company owner. He's a disruptor too, bringing innovation to the world of therapy in the form of Walk & Talk and the Online Counselling Directory. Like anyone stepping outside the stereotype, he's faced his haters too, but took it all in his stride. It was my absolute joy to chat with him, and I'm hoping we'll catch up in person when I'm in New York next year!

LIVE CHAT WITH GERDA MULLER - Back in September I attended the Australian Psychological Society's annual congress in Sydney and had the wonderful opportunity to chat with my dear friend and business mentor, Gerda Muller, about the importance of collegiality and collaboration in business. Having an abundance mindset makes collegiality a no-brainer.

This week on the Finding Proof podcast I'm interviewing my dear friend and all-round top Aussie bloke, musician and songwriter David Fuller. We go from laughter to darkness and back again. We share a glass of wine while our conversation covers his lifelong dedication to music, launching a music presence when you're not an 18 year old in a boy band, his years in the darkness of depression, and what saved him. One heck of a chat! Check out his tunes at www.davidfullermusic.com

In September, on RUOK Day I spoke on Facebook about the emotions that come with changing relationships in the workplace. In this episode of the Finding Proof podcast I have a relaxed chat with my son about what it's like living with dyspraxia. Never heard of dyspraxia? Harry Potter actor, Daniel Radcliffe, has it. One of the Doctor's newest companions on Doctor Who also has it. It's a coordination disorder affecting on average one kid in every class, and often goes undiagnosed. You'll learn a bit about dyspraxia in this episode, but you'll also learn how my family and I managed to find our own proof of how courageous and creative we could be in the face of our struggles. And the good news is, we're a happier family for it!

What excuses do you hear yourself saying time and again? Mine is "I don't have time". When you think about it, that's ridiculous. I have the same 24 hours as anyone else. Related to the earlier episode where I remind you that you’re not actually a mind-reader, in this episode I remind you that neither is anyone else.
