A new nationwide project called “Probing Our Country’s Soil Health” and is looking for 80 South Dakota farmers to participate. The project leaders are working to understand the status of soil health around the country and use that information to develop a new tool called Soil Health Assessment Protocol and Evaluation-- or SHAPE.
SHAPE is an online tool designed to interpret soil health measurements, monitor soil health change and offer management practice alternatives for improving soil health. The goal of the project is to collect 13,000 soil samples across the U.S. from approximately 6,000 fields, sampling different soil, climate and management conditions. The SHAPE tool will be available as a free web-based app for easy soil health scoring.

South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden has signed a bill that will partially fund the horse races in Fort Pierre in October 2025. Thanks to work started by the United States Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, the remains of a soldier from South Dakota killed during WWII have been laid to rest at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Blunt, SD. The DPAA says after the war, over 73,500 soldiers were missing. As of Aug. 10, 2024, just over 1600 have been accounted for.

On June 5, 2024, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced USDA is taking action to assist with efforts to strengthen Tribal food sovereignty. Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid that is often mixed with other drugs to increase their effects. Xylazine is a sedative commonly used on large animals such as horses and is not intended for human consumption. The combination of these two substances can lead to respiratory depression, seizures and even death.

The public hearing on a proposed Dwelling Rental Registration and Inspection Program drew a big crowd at the Pierre City Commission meeting Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2021.
Originally, the city was looking at a licensing and inspection program for residential rental units in Pierre. After holding three public information meetings in July and receiving input from stakeholders, city staff modified the licensing piece to a registration system and simplified the fee structure.

On March 24, 2020, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem signed an executive order extending remote work for state employees and closure of public schools into May. Gov. Noem and state Sec. of Health Kim Malsam-Rysdon also provided more information about the inmate at the State Women's Prison in Pierre who tested positive for COVID-19 and about the nine inmates in the same unit who walked away the evening of March 23. One inmate is back in custody.
On March 23, 2020, Governor Kristi Noem signed an executive order outlining guidelines for all South Dakotans, for-profit and not-for-profit employers, enclosed retail businesses that promote public gatherings, local and municipal governments and healthcare organizations as it relates to COVID-19 in the state of South Dakota. The order outlines what should be done. It is not a mandate. Final decisions remain under local control.
Noem and Department of Health Sec. Kim Malsam-Rysdon held a 2nd press conference March 23 to provide the latest information on the status of COVID-19 (coronavirus) in the state. The case in Hughes County is in an inmate at the State Women's Prison. Because it is not travel related, the one case is considered community spread.
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, Department of Health Sec. Kim Malsam-Rysdon held a press conference March 23, 2020, to provide the latest information on the status of COVID-19 (coronavirus) in the state. Current data showed 28 cases had been confirmed in the state, including the first positive cases in Hughes and Lyman counties in central South Dakota. Beadle County has 12 cases so far and Gov. Noem is asking city and county leaders there to enforce stricter social distancing rules to try to stop the spread.
