I'm back! That's right modcast lovers, like it or not I am back after a slightly longer vacation than usual. Just like Richard Milhouse Nixon, I'm tanned, rested and ready. So, naturally I flashback to 1968 when music was being mixed into new shapes and forms, often by older stars who were desperate to stay relevant. But also by up and comers looking to hit it big with a sort of bubblegum pop aimed at teens and their rapidly expanding wallets.
So you get some pretty cool, and pretty interesting music in the roughly five year period of '67 to '71. Much of that was America's easy, breezy version of blue-eyed soul. Known as sunshine pop, I've always said it could just as easily been called blue-skied soul as it was so tied to California blue skies, with bits of soul, psych and folk mixed in with a sort of sun and fun vibe.

The Modcast turns into a Monkeecast this week. Top to bottom this show is all pre-fab four. Related at least. The Monkees were constructed no doubt. But what a construction.
This modcast is a first. In 16 years I've never done a show focusing on just one band. The closest I ever came was back in 2020 when I did a whole modcast featuring bands that sounded a lot like The Style Council, Modcast #459: In The Style Of. But this one is different. This focuses on The Monkees music and you'll get a few of their lesser known tracks along the way, as well as some of the members later solo material, and then some interesting covers of Monkees songs and songs clearly inspired by and sampling The Monkees. So buckle up baby it's gonna be quite a ride. Let's go monkey around.

In closing out this episode I played the title track to the Pandora’s second full length LP “Stop Pretending” which was their best, and their most mod probably because lead Pandora Paula Pierce had originally recorded it with her previous --more really British mod-- band Action Now.

Welcome to episode 3 featuring garage revival bands. Lots of bands start in garages, but these bands all share a certain sound that can only be called sixties punk. They draw their influences from the sixties sounds of the likes of The Standells, The Seeds, The Sonics, The Count 5, Velvet Underground and The Kingsmen. But they also were influenced by the original punk rock scene of the late seventies such as the Ramones, Sex Pistols and New York Dolls. The garage rock bands featured in this episode are just the tip of the iceberg.

I started this modcast in part because it seemed to me that a lot of great mod bands from the original Southern California scene of the 80s never got their due. My first few shows were dedicated to sharing the music of some those bands and then it just sort of grew from there.
Remember back in 2006 the internet was still in its infancy really. Napster had opened up digital music in the 90s, but it still wasn't easy to find music by bands like these online. You couldn't just type their name in google and have a complete playlist wash over you. So, I thought I'd share what I had. I had digitized a lot of my mod catalog a few years before that and so I had the mp3s and could share them. And now here we are 500 shows later.
I gotta tell you after doing this show for 15 years, this modcast is really the first love letter to myself. I've collected some of my favorite artists and a few of my favorite songs, fitting them all into a strange little theme that Mrs. Suave came up with. I struggled to figure out a good way to hang 500 shows together for this one particular modcast. I just couldn't come up with a good theme. And then she dropped this little gem on me. Ages ago I discovered this great blog (yes blog!) called Ice Cream Man Power Pop & More. It was highlighting all the exact types of music that I loved. Eventually that morphed into the fantastic Ice Cream Man Power Pop & More Podcast and Ice Cream Man Power Pop & More Records, run by the even more fantastic prince of power pop promotion, Wayne Lundqvist Ford. I'd be shocked --shocked I tell you-- if you could find anyone who has done more to promote independent artists playing all the great types of mod friendly music from power pop to northern soul and everything in between. His compilations featuring new and old bands and are legendary for breaking new sounds as well as sometime being so vast you're riding high for weeks listening to them all.
So, I invited him to chat about new music, old music, what is good music, and more. He even kindly brought some brand new tunes to share with us all.

This week I was fortunate to connect with the lead singer of Vancouver, BC's Star Collector (Bandcamp, Facebook). It was a fun conversation about the band, his inspirations and what he's listening to currently. Star Collector's latest album, their first in about 15 years, is Game Day and it is a rip roaring power pop ride from start to finish. Highly recommended, as is anything from their four earlier LPs. What a time to be alive. None of us has ever lived through a pandemic like this. Around the world people are affected in different ways and to different degrees. One thing that for me is a constant comfort is music. I've been listening to a lot of classic tracks the past couple of months. Like comfort food, this is comfort music. I love my comfort foods from ice cream to mac and cheese to chex mix. And of course all the cocktail accompanists. So motown to lounge, power pop to jazz, and all manner of genres in between. I call it ear candy, and it is helpful in soothing the soul.

Everyone knows that jazz and soul played a big part in the early mod scene, and so of course did the blues. Mostly white British youth became enamored of delta blues belted out by black American musicians in the mid to late '50s. The sounds of Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Slim Harpo, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddly, Lightning Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, and Sonny Boy Williamson swamped London music clubs. A first wave of older players latched on to the music like Alexis Korner, Zoot Money, George Fame, Cyril Davies and Graham Bond. These early blues adopters took other younger musicians under the collective wings and mentored the future stars of the British invasion in rhythm & blues such as Long John Baldry, Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Manfred Mann, Eric Burdon, Rod Stewart and more. It was these stars that the early mods embraced and turned into the icons of their burgeoning teen music scene. This then is the blues in the beginning of the mod era.

In 1980 musical currents were steeped in punk, post-punk, power pop, and new wave. The Specials were riding high off the success of their debut album, and founder Jerry Dammers pushed the band to immediately record a follow-up, More Specials. But rather than continue the DIY punked up ska and reggae they had mastered on their first LP Dammers pushed for doing something entirely different, something new and contrary to the popular sounds of the era. In an interview in mid-1980 Dammers said: "It's time for 2-Tone bands to begin getting experimental. Some of the home-grown ska has started to become a cliche. We've got to start all over again." So he drove The Specials in hard left turn creating an album of easy listening, exotica, lounge music. And young mods like yours truly ate it up.
We didn't realize we were cutting our teeth on lounge music and that it was training us up for the coming cocktail revolution of the 1990s. There's no doubt that Jerry Dammers trained mods to like lounge, exotica, tiki and other incredibly strange music that we embraced decades later. So who are the people Jerry really trained? Who are the graduates of Jerry Dammers' Bootcamp? DJ Ken from The Shingles joins me in highlighting a few of Dammers contemporaries and his musical progeny.

This is it, the end of another year. 2018 is bowing out and 2019 is stepping up to the plate. This past year was a pretty damn good one for new music. So much so that it's taken me weeks to really filter through the crop and pick just the ripest bits of tasty musical fruit. Tons of good bands simply didn't make the cut, not because they didn't produce good stuff, but just because I only have one more hour this year and so you're going to get just the tastiest bits. Welly, welly, well, sirs, here it is. Start. Stop. Turn it off and back on again maybe it will work. Lo, and behold the modcast is back up and running after some behind the scenes technical difficulties with my host, Podomatic. I don't know if it makes me feel better to know it wasn't just me that suffered, but most all of those who use Podomatic. But no matter everything seems to be back online and in order.
So, without further ado here is my F-U to trolls of the recent weeks who felt the need to tweet or comment on the Facebook show about how terrible this show is. I think one of them said my voice was like listening to nails on a chalkboard. I've always said I had a face for radio and a voice for silent films, so it isn't like I haven't been upfront about this! My first thought was to actually use recordings of nails on chalkboards, but I was too lazy to spend the time to do all that. Most of the complaints were actually about content; apparently my choices aren't mod enough. I beg to differ for so many reasons, mostly because they're wrong. You can listen in to hear my reasoning and judge for yourself.

Jazz has always played a big part of the mod lifestyle, indeed it was arguably the founding sound of the original mods. Over the years R&B, soul, power pop and other musical styles have become even more dominant in some ways. But elements of jazz always have been and always will be a mainstay of mods the world over. I'm not a deep jazz cat by any means, but I like jazz. I've got lots of jazz favorites like from the early stuff like Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, and Count Basie, and of course all the various flavors of mod jazz from Jimmy Smith, Chico Hamilton, Miles Davis, and so on. So, this week I'm veering a little more contemporary with more modern mod friendly jazz acts.

What is the perfect pop song? Good luck on getting an answer. Most of us can't agree on what a pop song is, let alone which ones are perfect. Or near to. But, Mary Queen of Cosmos had the guts, the chutzpah, the balls if you will, to take up Mr. Suave's challenge to figure out the modern day perfect pop song. It's a good show with quote, "a lot of good upstroking and downstroking", so you know you're going to enjoy it on some level. What do you think? What is the perfect pop song, if there is such a thing? Are any of these that? I'll be the judge. The jury. And the executioner. Unless you've been living under a rock you know all about the recent outbreaks of violence during protests, anti-protests, free speech marches, and so on. From Portland, OR to Portland, ME; Boston, Phoenix, Seattle, San Francisco, Louisville. It seems like there is some sort of unrest just about everywhere. None of it more publicized though than the white supremacists and neo-Nazi's who marched in Charlottesville, Virginia. We shouldn't be surprised, this has happened many times before. Sadly, it will likley happen many times again.
A now famous quote from uber-contrarian Henry Rollins has been popping up in memes and social media over and over again. "This is not the time to be dismayed, this is punk rock time. This is what Joe Strummer trained you for." That got me and Mary Queen of Cosmos thinking and drinking (we do a lot of both). Who are the people Joe trained? As is his usual modus operandi Ken from the cocktail syndicate is back with the officially Unofficial Tiki Oasis 2017: International Intrigue mix. It's really chapping my hide to have to listen to this since for the first time in a few years I'm not attending Tiki Oasis. I had to buy a roof and some siding for the house --neither of which I ever get to really look at you know seeing as they're on the outside and I'm on the inside-- which really put a dent in the old pocketbook. East meets west with Shibuya-kei taking center stage in the mod world this week. Shibuya-kei was a 1990s music movement that wasn't about Tokyo's ultra-trendy and fashionable Shibuya district as it was about a rather lucky gathering of Japanese musicians who mixed bossa nova, soul, funk, jazz, techno and synthpop into a retro-futrist sound that was redundant yet fresh.
Shibuya-kei's most prominent artists -- Flipper's Guitar, Pizzicato 5, Love Tamborines, Kahimi Karie, Fantastic Plastic Machine and others -- mixed together everything from sixties pop and motown, to acid jazz, krautrock, French ye-ye and twee. The result was something like if Sergio Mendes and Burt Bacharach had a Japanese love child.
So this week I'm exploring the soul and style of Shibuya-kei and also exploring a few of the scenes influences, as well as some of it's offspring and distant cousins.

Here, finally, was proof that mod could mutate into a reflection of contemporary street culture and yet still retain its vital characteristics: confidence, defiance and an appreciation of a nice pair of shoes, all wrapped up in a cocksure bravado traceable all the way back to original ‘tacky herbert’ Jimmy Cooper. A booming Loaded magazine (run by Jam fans James Brown and Tim Southwell) happily ran fashion spreads of Liam-esque models in fishtail parkas and Hush Puppies and Oasis duly became the biggest band since The Beatles. In the early 90s American music ruled the airwaves internationally. Seattle had spawned the angrily apathetic punk-metal hybrid that was grunge, and the slacker sound had rolled right round the world.
For every action there is a reaction. Britpop was that reaction. Blur front man Damon Albarn explained Britpop has a reaction to grunge's lack of style. The Britpop scene of 1994 - 1997 was a sort of stylistic second coming of the mod revival, this one based less on soul and R&B and more on the pure Britishness of being what was essentially a modern mod. Britpop bands brought back the importance of being British, and the music was so thoroughly British it never did manage an invasion of the US the way sixties British music had.
Britpop was a cultural shift through and through. It had its own movies like Trainspotting and Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. It had its own celebrity nightlcub The Blow Up. Its own style, lad boys along with its own documentation of the style, lad mags. But above all it had its own music which dominated the world's music scene throughout the mid-90s.
So, as part of my mod essentials series of modcasts I'm exploring the Britpop phenomenon. Previously I looked the sixties mods and then the mod revival of the late 70s and early 80s. And now it's time to turn to Britpop and the 90s.
You can explore more as well. I had a lot of resources that I was able to crib from, using audio clips and borrowing quotes. There are some good movies about the Britpop era: The Britpop Story and Live Forever. There is a fantastic book that delves into the whole scene from the music to the culture to the politics: Britpop!: Cool Britannia And The Spectacular Demise Of English Rock by John Harris. Mojo magazine produced an entire Britpop special edition a few years back that includes interviews with about 20 of the artists and briefly tells the scene's story. Once you get into it you'll find, as I did, how amazing a time it really was.

Welcome to Mr. Suave's Mod Mod World, I opened today's show with a track from a band called Airborne Toxic Event, and even though they're out of Los Angeles man they sound a lot like a british band with obvious influence from Franz Ferdinand and the Fratellis. The rest of the show is equally as good. I think there is pretty much something for everyone here -- except for the Def Leppard crowd (you know who you are, now leave me alone and learn to like better music).

Welcome to Mr Suave's Mod Mod World, the big ska covers show. I don't know when exactly it happened, but at some point covers ceased to be just a ska band staple as they were for Madness, The Beat, The Specials and so on back in the two-tone era. Then, covers were soemthing that rounded out a band's performance, a nice little extra that was the musical cherry on top of each band's original ice cream sundae. Now, not so much. You practically can't be a ska band these days if you aren't doing a slew of covers of classic songs in a ska style. For better or worse, the modern ska catalog owes as much to covers as it does to original composition. There are ska styled covers of everything from the Village People's "YMCA" to the Star Wars theme song.
So, here then is a whole bunch of ska related covers. This whole modcast is either songs done in a ska style, or a cover of a ska band made new, or something along those lines. There's even a cover of a cover of a cover of a commercial buried in here.

Welcome to Mr. Suave’s Mod Mod World. This is a special episode of the modcast, the second in a series I call Mod Essentials. The first one, Mod Essentials: In The Beginning premiered last summer and featured my take on the most essential mod tracks of the 1960s. As you can imagine it was hardly definitive. And this one likely won’t be either . This is Mod Essentials II: The Revival. You will see that while there are some fantastic songs here, there are a number of key artists missing like The Crooks, Squire, The Amber Squad, Long Tall Shorty, The Cigarettes and lots more. From 1977 to 1981 mod was reborn in the UK, which sparked mod revivals around the world. For a few glorious years the energy and angst of punk was wed to the rhythm of soul, the pulse of power pop, and the fashions of the sixties. The Who release Quadrophenia at the height of the revival creating even more interest in all things mod. Inevitably the mod scene became overexposed, it went mainstream briefly, and that more than anything else killed it and drove the remaining mods back to their soul clubs to await the movements next revival -- still more than a decade away. Here then are the songs that I think epitomize the wide range of sounds in the mod revival. So, what are your essential mod revival tracks? I'm dying to find out from people what they see as the quintessential mod revival sound. Leave a comment and let me know what you think of my list here, what you would have added, or what you would have scrapped. Don't be shy.
It's all smack and tackle thanks to this being Superbowl weekend. The food is great, but I'm not one for the game myself. I'd much rather sitdown and listen to some great garage rock, or some swingin' lounge music. Or, I could mix up a modcast of epic proportions.
Flashback to 1984, and to 1967, and to 1978, and even just back to '02. Flashbacks are great aren't they? So are the tracks on this week's modcast. Okay, maybe not epic, but pretty damn good none the less. Got a couple of new things to serve up for you: some power pop from The Wishes, and some very excellent mod R&B courtesy of Invisible Lead Soup. And there's a few nice gems here that I blew the dust off of which I think you'll dig from The Standells, the Sidewalks and not the least of which is a great little song from power pop composer Gary Valentine who, sadly, has never received the accolades he's due.
