In episode 262 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about Security.
In the past, security was never really a prominent topic for SAP customers. When asked about their top 5 priorities in the next year, other topics were always on the top. To my suprise, this changed quite a bit: not only in the latest DSAG Survey Security came out as one of the most important topics.
So with todays session, we want to kick off several sessions focused completely on Security with SAP and Microsoft. This goes way beyond using Entra ID for Signle Sign-On and my colleague Martin Pankraz has focused on this for years. So I am really glad to have Martin back with us to kick off the security related sessions.

In episode 261 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we have another News update.
A few weeks back we had a News-only episode where we just looked at what had happened in the SAP and Microsoft space in recent weeks without focusing on any specfic topic. We actually got quite some positive feedback, so we decided to do this more often. It will be a shorter episode, but I think this is good with everyone. Of course, we will also continue to do our deep dives on specific topics.
However, before we get start today there is also one other thing that was brought up now several times. When you watch this show on YouTube, you are interrupted quite often with ads. Several of you wrote comments under some videos, and also some colleagues reached out to me. I want to be clear: we are not making any money with these videos. We have NOT activitated anything to earn money with this. So unfortunately there is very little that we can do. I hope you can still enjoy this and all of our other vidoes and you might just have to wait and skip some ads.

In episode 260 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about the DSAG Annual congress.
Last week I had the pleasure to attend the DSAG Annual congress in Bremen. DSAG is the German Speaking User Group and the annual event is the biggest and probably most relevant event for the german speaking community in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This year was the first time, that I didn't present anything myself. I had honor of hosting our SAP with Microsoft track with great customer presentations, I attended many amazing customer sessions and I was again able to connect with lots of peers from SAP, partners and customers during the event. So today we want to recap the event and it is really great that we have Jens Hungershausen with us.

In episode 258 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about SAP and Microsoft.
From time to time we mention that Microsoft is a huge SAP customer. Not only since a few months, but since tens of years. So in a lot of cases our situation refelcts the same situation as a lot of customers out there. Roughly three years ago we had Frederic Huet from out internal SAP team talking about Microsoft running SAP. Three years is a pretty long time in the age of cloud and AI, so I am happy to have Fred back with us to share the latest on SAP at Microsoft.

In episode 256 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about Community.
When I was still at SAP over 10 years ago, I loved working with DSAG, the German Speaking SAP User Group. For me -- in my last role as the product manager for SAP API Management -- it was always great to get direct consolidated customer feedback. To present the latest features and listen to what was resonating well and what not. So for me it was clear that I wanted to continue to work with DSAG in my role SAP product manager for SAP integration at Microsoft.
So today I am happy to have Sebastian Westphal the Executive Board Member for Technology at DSAG with us.

In episode 255 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about ASUG with Geoff Scott.
In my role as a product manager, I try to stay in contact with customers as much as possible. On the one hand I can help customers get started with new innovations, but I also get to learn and hear their feedback. So at the last Sapphire it was great for me to see, that Geoff Scott, CEO of ASUG, the American SAP User Group, was on stage during the keynote of Thomas Saueressig. Geoff has always great insights when it comes to customers and I am glad that we have him back on our show.

In episode 252 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about Autonmous Agents.
A few weeks back we had several hands-on sessions during the DSAG TechXChange event. One of the most popular sessions were the Copilot Studio & SAP sessions. I was lucky to work with Robin Rosengrün on those and although we had a recap session, Robin wasn't able to join our podcast at this time.
Now I am happy to have him with us to talk about Copilot Studio, Autonomous agents, when to use them and also look at the new Agent feed.

In episode 250 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about ABAP Vibe Coding!Vibe coding is a very hot topic at the moment. I myself have explored a few things and the results using Claude or GitHub Copilot are atcually pretty impressive. When doing this with ABAP, the results are only so-so. From timt to time the LLM suggests function modules or data objects that actually do not exist in the SAP system. This can be quite frustrating. So wouldn't it be great if there was a way to ground the LLM on the data objects that are actually available in MY SAP system? Well, I am glad to have Alice Vinogradova back with us to give us some sneek peak at what can happen if you combine the OData MCP Bridge, a custom OData service which exposes classes, interaces and functions and GitHub Copilot.

In episode 249 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about data again. In previous epiosdes we talked alot about what you can do with AI, Copilot and your SAP data. We see a lot of customers that have their SAP data in Fabric and let the magic begin. However, the first step for this integration is to get the data in Fabric and today we want to summarize several options to do that. To provide us with this overview, I am glad to have Ulrich Christ and Bartosz Jarkowski with us.

In episode 248 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about the Model Context Protocol and how to use it with SAP. Two weeks back Alice released the MCP Bridge on GitHub which basically enables you to expose any OData service as an MCP Server. I was lucky to be a very early tester of this MCP Bridge and I was blown away by the result. I had just picked a few random OData services and it all worked. Then I looked for commonly used SAP business OData service from the API Buinsess Hub -- and they also worked. Even more -- I was not only able to read information from my SAP system, but also writing back information was possible. So to take a closer look a the MCP Bridge I am really glad to have Alice Vinogradova with us today.

In episode 242 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about the integration of SAP LeanIX and Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps.
I have to admit that I have not yet worked with SAP LeanIX. LeanIX is an Enterprise Architecture Tools that brings visibility in your landscape. In most companies, this tool is used by Enterprise Architects. What happens now, if you combine LeanIX with Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps, which helps you to secure and govern SaaS solution? That's exactly what Martin Pankraz and Michelle Niedernhuber from SAP thought about and brought these two products together. So in todays episode -- to quote from their blog post -- we will look at the magic that happens when you combine them.

In episode 240 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about the improvements in Principal propgation.
Almost 2 years ago, in 2023, Microsoft kicked off the Secure Future Initiative. This meant that litterally all the services within Microsoft went through a security review and were hardend. While this certainly improved security, it also made a lot of scenario much more complicated. Where in the past you could connect to a service using basic authentication or with a simple certificate, that is no longer possible. Martin -- always looking at the positive side -- recently talked about how the "Secure Future Initiative" blocker became a differentiator for SAP with Microsoft -- and I love this. With the work that Martin and the team did we now have a really cool, secure and much easier to maintain solution to do principal propagation.
I am glad that we have Martin back on our show to explain a little more about the magic that he did.

After focusing on AI in the last few shows, lets get back to something more deterministik: Storage! We had already talked about sophisticated storage requirements for SAP S/4HANA projects and how Azure NetApp Files provides one of the best and most performant options for the most demanding workload. However, flexibility was sometimes an issue. With the new flexible service level ANF allows you now to independently configure storage capacity and throughput, optimizing costs and performance by right-sizing based on your needs. In episode 235 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about DSAG TechXChange 2025. We are recording this session on Tuesday. Next Friday (so actually one day before we publish this video), we have 5 different hands-on labs at the DSAG TechXChange 2025 event. You might ask: well, why do I care? I am not even attending? Or if you are, you might not have been able to sign-up, because all the sessions are fully booked. Well, the cool thing is that all the sessions are document and published on GitHub now. So if you were not able to attend, you can still take a look at the tutorials, which guide you through the process. In most cases, you can easily substitute the setup that we are providing for the event, with envorinment that are available in a trial. With this we hope you can also experience the benefits of integrating SAP with Microsoft. To give you a glimpse of what we have prepared, I have some of the contributors for the sessions with us today: Martin, Martin and Michael from SAP. Before we take a look at the sessions, lets start with a quick introduction.

In episode 233 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about Tata Projects.
Migrating a 400 TB of SAP systems to RISE with SAP on Azure alone is a huge challange. Doing this within 9 months, with only 9 days of blackout is even better. But what makes this story so special is really leveraging the benefits of this Microsoft and SAP integration by implementing Power BI, Security Copilot, Power Platform and obviously also AI.

In episode 232 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about Microsoft Fabric and SAP.
Some episodes back we started to talk about SAP and the integration in Fabric using Open Mirroring. One of the key highlights there was the platform aspect. Fabric allows partners to plug into the Open Mirroring concept and bring their solutions. In following episodes we had already partners like dab and Simplement joining us, talking about their solution. Today we want to continue to look at partners who extend the integration of SAP solutions into Fabric. Interdobs and powerdobs are interesting partners in this regards, because they designed a Datasphere-based open mirroring service offering. To tell us more about their solutions, I am happy to have Ronald, Ernst, Tim and Martijn from Interdobs with us today.

In episode 231 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about GitHub Actions.
Diviating little from classic SAP and Microsoft topics, we take a look at GitHub today. Millions of development projects are done on GitHub. In most cases -- when I look at my own projects -- it is just about pushing data to a GitHub repo and that's it. Our SAPonAzurePodcast website is a small exception, where we do some automation. But you can do much, much more. Christian Lechner from SAP is THE expert on this for me. He has not only done some amazing things with Terraform and BTP, but also automated almost everything in his repos on GitHub with GitHub Actions.

In episode 229 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk again about AI and SAP.The last few months have seen an amazing evolution in AI. What started as a simple Bot Framework, evolved to GPT driven Chatbots, to Copilot to users interacting with agents. The latest step -- like what we are doing together with SAP on the Joule and Copilot integration -- is multi-agent integration. Chan Jin Park, CJ, was on our show twice to talk about his scenarios and demos leveraging Azure OpenAI, Teams and Copilot integrations. I am glad to have him back to show us his latest developments.

In episode 227 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about SNC. In the past we have talked about OData services quite a lot, however, RFC communication is still used by many customers. While RFC provides a seamless and efficient integration to your SAP system, it is by default not secure. That's where SNC, the Secure Network Communications comes in. But how do you set it up? How do yet get started? Martin Pankraz recently published a blost post that outlines the required steps so that you can use RFC via SNC in your Power Platfrom, Logic Apps or Microsoft Fabric integration scenarios.

A few months ago SAP had announced the End-of-Maintenance of the SAP Identity Management (SAP IDM) solution in 2027 or 2030 with Extended maintenance. In episode 202 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about Copilot and SAP.

We had also talked about the SAP Joule and Microsoft Copilot integration that Christian Klein announced during Sapphire. Both of these scenarios are fantastic and help customers to immediately get started.
However, we also know that customer often need very specific, very unique integration -- obviously also with Copilot. That's where you might want to develop your own scenarios. With the Copilot SDK for Visual Studio Code or even better with Copilot Studio creating your own Copilot integration is easier than ever.

In episode 197 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about how to improve storage throughput. In our last episode we quickly mentioned how features and capabilities are constantly added to services in the cloud. We talked about this in the context of the Azure Monitor for SAP solutions, but obviously these enhancements and optimizations are also happening on a lower level. Especially in SAP Hana installations, I/O throughput is super critical. In the past SCSI was used to connect your disks to the VM. Now we can leverage NVMe (non-volatile memory express) using Azure Boost. To tell us more about this and actually show how to convert from SCSI to NVMe, I am glad to have Philipp Leitenbauer with us today. In episode 177 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about Robert :-) I'm not sure about the exact year but let's say 15 years ago I was working at SAP and I got introduced probably via email to Robert Boban. Robert was working at that time at the value prototyping team. I was very much engaged already at that time in Microsoft integration projects. I was part of the NetWeaver Regional Implementation Group and in this context I was looking at integrating a search scenario across the SAP and Microsoft stack. I got introduced to Robert and I immediately saw his passion, his dedication and his willingness to help & support. It was super cool to work with him. Then, seven years ago I joined Microsoft and obviously still at SAP I was going around saying "Goodbye" to a lot of good friends and I also reached out to Robert. I told him that I am going to Microsoft and it was super cool to hear that apparently he had made the same decision and he would also join Microsoft just one month or so later than I.Well, today as you might have guessed from the title and also looking at Roberts name here in Teams, we do have some interesting news: Robert is actually going back to SAP, so after having worked with him quite closely especially in the beginning on SAP on Microsoft infrastructure, but also integration topics, he's now going back to SAP.Luckily we will still have the opportunity to work with him -- and since we are an SAP and Microsoft podcast he will continue to host this show with us. In episode 172 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we don't talk too much about technology, but more about something that often prevents technology to be applied. Back when I was at SAP, one of the biggest challenges that I saw with customers -- especially with bigger customers -- was that the SAP team is not talking to the non-SAP team. In a lot of organizations there is a dedicated team in IT that looks after the SAP environment and an IT team that is looking after the rest. They often don't even sit on the same floor or build which leads to disconnected projects. So today we talk about that and discuss how we can address this.Find all the links mentioned here: https://www.saponazurepodcast.de/episode172Reach out to us for any feedback / questions: Robert Boban: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rboban/ Goran Condric: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gorancondric/ Holger Bruchelt: https://www.linkedin.com/in/holger-bruchelt/ #Microsoft #SAP #Azure #SAPonAzure #CAF ## Summary created by AI The SAP team and the non-SAP team often have different perspectives, responsibilities, and knowledge, and they need to communicate and understand each other better. * The cloud adoption framework provides a common language and a guide for the cloud journey, and it helps to establish cross-functional teams that can work together on strategy, governance, operation, and adoption. * The well-architected framework provides a huge set of best practices and checklists that can help to optimize the cloud infrastructure and services, and to align them with the business goals and requirements. * The DevOps mentality and tools can help to automate and standardize the cloud deployment and operation, and to enable faster and more flexible testing and innovation. * The AI and extend-innovate scenarios require more data integration and preparation, and more collaboration between the infrastructure and the application layers.

IntroductionIn episode 163 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about Excel. When Christian Klein did the keynote on the DSAG Jahreskongress two weeks back, he put up a slide on the evolution of customers running their business. And one of the starting points was Excel! I would argue that even today there are probably very few customers that are not using Excel -- in addition to their SAP system. So integration is key. There are thousands of ways how Excel can work with SAP -- there is even a joke that every month a blog post is published that shows a new way. There is however one community project, the "UI5 Spreadsheet Importer" that is basically a component for UI5 which allows enables the bulk upload of data. For this we have Marian Zeis joining us today who will talk and show us more. UI5 spreadsheet importer component: Marian explains the use case, features, and implementation of his open source component that allows users to upload and download Excel files to and from SAP Fiori apps using OData services and UI5 controls. Demo: Marian shows a live demo of his component in action, using a sample app based on the SAP Fiori elements list report and object page templates, and also shows how to customize and configure the component for different scenarios and data types. Questions and answers: Holger, Robert, and Goran ask Marian some questions about the component, such as how to integrate it with standard SAP Fiori apps, how to handle complex data structures, and how to get started with the project. Conclusion: Holger thanks Marian for his presentation and invites the listeners to check out the links and documentation for the component on GitHub and his blog posts.

This SDK empowers ABAP developers to consume Azure OpenAI services without leaving their ABAP code or having to know the intricate details of Azure OpenAI. I had the opportunity to present and demo the SDK with the German Speaking SAP User Group a few months back, which led to some exciting discussions with customers and actual follow-up projects. Today, we are thrilled to have the brain behind the AI SDK for ABAP with us: Gopal Nair, a Principal Software Engineer at Microsoft. We're really looking forward to Gopal introducing the topic and sharing some examples with us. In fact, he has so many examples that we're planning to do a few follow-up sessions with him, so stay tuned! (this intro was written by Azure OpenAI)

In episode 139 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about DR scenario for SAP Windows application servers, SAP Private Link in Action at FrieslandCampina and Part 3 of the SAP CDC Connector and SLT. Then we switch over to low-code.

Low-code and SAP are top of mind in a lot of my discussions with customers and partners at the moment. One reason might be the Power Platform and SAP roadshow that we just ran in Germany. We had stops in three cities and in all locations we had trouble fitting everyone in -- all shows were overbooked. Each event was fantastic and featured some amazing scenarios from partners and our customers.

Partners like Arvato, Almato, All for One Group, Infpulse, Orbis, NTT, msg, Syntax and Verovis joined us to present their Power Platform & SAP integrations.
Marlene and Mahesh join us talk about their experience organizing this event.

Then we talk about a very hot topic: OpenAI, ChatGPT, Copilot, Dalee, or Azure Open AI are currently mentioned almost everywhere.  In the midsts to a lot of strange and completely useless scenario we can also see some gems popping up. Especially in the area of SAP and Open AI we see some cool use-cases from partners, the community and customers.
For todays show we have Chan Jin Park joining us. He has been working on a nice integration scenario that shows some of the ideas and potential scenarios that you can do when connecting SAP with large language models.

Then we welcome Manish Shah with us. One of the most popular topics at the moment is how to work with data from SAP in a Microsoft context. SAP Datasphere was recently announced by SAP and one of the key integration points was with Databricks which also is used by lots of customers on Azure. From a Microsoft side we recently released the SAP CDC Connector for Azure Data Fatory and Synapse which uses the ODP framework to integrate with SAP data. To make the integration with the ODP framework even more powerful, customers can use the SAP Landscape Transformation Replication Service (SAP SLT) which integrates with the ODP services and enables direct access to SAP tables. These tables are constantly monitored and changes are recorded and can be made immediately available to Azure. Manish introduces us to the topic and shows an end-to-end demo.

In episode 130 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk about SAP ASE on Azure NetApp Files, SAP on Azure Oracle Performance scripts, Identity federation between Azure AD B2C and SAP Cloud, Reinventing search with a new AI-powered Microsoft Bing and Edge, Microsoft Roadshow about SAP & Power Platform and Events-to-Business Actions. Then we have Karsten Strothmann from SAP joining.

A few years ago, when I was still working at SAP I had often discussions with architects at customers about Events and Event Driven Architectures. At that time we painted a lot of interesting diagrams how events could drive a business. How implementing these event driven architectures would change the way how applications work, how things would become "more realtime" or also more resilient from a business operations points of view. However, at that time it was mostly theoretical.

If I look back the last few months, I have to say I see a huge shift: all of a sudden customers are actually implementing these event drive architectures and now the question is more: how can this be done?

Luckily SAP and Microsoft have been working on a good integration of SAP BTP Event Mesh and Azure Event Grid for some time and we currently have a beta running where customers can already experience the simplicity of integrating SAP events with Microsoft events.

Episode 100!

When Robert, Goran and I published our first podcast episode in July 2020  the main motivation was to talk about the world of SAP and Microsoft. There were and are some fantastic resources about SAP and about Microsoft, but nothing that really talked about what you can do with both together.

So in the last 2 years we had a lot of fantastic content. We talked about Microsoft as an SAP customer, we talked about different partner solutions and about co-developments that we are doing.

For episode 100 we decided to invite Peter Fischer and Benjamin Herrmann who are managing the customer relationship with SAP as a customer at Microsoft. Peter and Benjamin provide us with a good overview on what's happening on the SAP side -- especially in the context of Microsoft of course.
