The team sits down with Rishi Jain to discuss Cross River’s marquee wind, hydro, nuclear, hydrogen, ammonia project in the revitalized heavy industrial Port of Belledune, New Brunswick, Canada.
About Rishi Jain:
Rishi is a Partner and Managing Director at Cross River Infrastructure Partners. He leads the hydrogen and nuclear business development activities of the firm and is responsible for all aspects of project origination. Rishi also manages commercial processes, stakeholder relations, is closely involved with financial structuring of projects, and is the lead for strategic partner relationships.
Prior to joining Cross River, Rishi was a special situations and macro analyst at Great Oaks Capital Management, focused on energy, natural resources, and industry. Rishi also originated and managed the firm’s earlier stage investments in new industrial clean-tech and clean-resource companies.
Rishi is a graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and also completed the Chartered Financial Analyst program.

Co-hosts Chris Jackson and Alicia Eastman had the pleasure to interview Bart White of Santander Corporate and Investment Banking (SCIB). The discussion was mostly regarding optimizing different bespoke tools to accelerate the energy transition with some case examples provided by Bart. About Tue Johannessen:
Tue has a long track record in chemical engineering, CleanTech, sustainability, innovation, and business development.
He earned his PhD from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in 1998 and spent some time in academic and entrepreneurial roles. Research in ammonia storage led to co-founding a CleanTech start-up in 2006 as CTO - operating in the automotive emissions control sector. His work with ammonia continued at Maersk as the R&D lead which would become the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. He led the modeling efforts including all relevant fuel pathways and vessel technologies built into a comprehensive techno-economic tool, NavigaTE, allowing for analyzing and building maritime transition strategies.
In 2022, he joined the Alfa Laval Energy Division in a business development role focused on Fuel Cells & P2X. Since January 2024, he is now VP in the newly established Business Unit for Electrolyzer & Fuel Cell Technologies heading Strategy and Partnerships.
Fun fact: Tue is an inventor and in addition to other patents and IP, he and colleagues from DTU were awarded EPO’s European Inventor Award in 2016.

This week’s episode is a discussion between EAH hosts Patrick Molloy, Alicia Eastman, and Chris Jackson. The team cover the current status of hydrogen regulation, innovation, financing, markets, and consolidation. Hanging over most conversations in the decarbonization or future fuels space, is the perpetual question: When will investors actually step up with significant capital to help companies make it through the development desert, instead of letting promising companies languish in the double dunes of despair? This week, the EAH team speaks with Jan Haizmann, one of the founders of the Zero Emissions Traders Alliance (ZETA) and an energy trading veteran expanding the enabling market tools and structures in Europe to the MENA region in order to facilitate exchange with the global market for net zero energy carriers like hydrogen and derivatives.
About Jan Haizmann:
Jan Haizmann is a qualified lawyer who has spent most of his career focused on building energy markets. In parallel, he established a boutique consulting group, Correggio NET, now based in Dubai. The European Commission has used Jan’s services since 2010 to help build new energy market structures.
Jan and Paul Van Son, the Chairman of Dii Desert Energy and ZETA, originally met in 1999 when Paul was the CEO of a Dutch utility. Together, they set out to build an energy wholesale market in Europe. They channeled this through the European Federation of Energy Traders (EFET). They built the association from scratch reaching 150 companies from 25 countries and became a key partner for the European Commission. Paul was the chairman of EFET until 2012, and Jan was one of the four key staff in the venture, as well as Board member for 15 years.
Jan left EFET last year to set up the Dutch not-for profit foundation - Zero Emissions Traders Association (ZETA) with Dii Desert Energy including Paul and CEO Cornelius Matthes as well as Frank Wouters who leads MENA Hydrogen Alliance. Recognizing the market potential for sustainable energy in the GCC and more general MENA region, the group believes that the climate transition must be accelerated through market tools, in order to give proper credit for reduction and elimination of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

Recorded before the highly successful MEPC81, Arsenio describes his vision for the IMO and his confidence in solutions that will reduce emissions from shipping without penalizing member states.

About SG Arsenio Dominguez:
Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco is the tenth IMO Secretary-General, bringing with him more than three decades of experience serving the global maritime sector, across a spectrum of leadership roles of increasing scope and responsibility.
Initially representing his native Panama, first within the Panama Maritime Authority and in his lattermost appointment as Ambassador of Panama to the IMO, his affinity for building consensus saw him elected by his peers as Chair of several flagship IMO intergovernmental meetings, including: the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), the Technical Committee of the 29th Assembly, and the Maritime Security, Piracy and Armed Robbery Group, as well as a number of Vice-Chair and Board member roles.
A naval architect at heart and by training, Mr. Dominguez gained his first degree at Veracruzana University, Mexico. Recognizing from the outset of his career the importance of a multi-disciplinary and multi-sectorial approach to the maritime sector, Mr. Dominguez later went on to pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Hull, as well as an executive qualification in International Law and European Politics at Birkbeck University, both in the United Kingdom.
This agile approach served him well in better understanding the priorities and navigating the needs of the different stakeholders across the maritime sector, and indeed the complexities of a specialized UN agency whose mission it is to support them. In 2017, Mr. Dominguez harnessed this extensive technical and diplomatic knowledge and experience as a delegate for the benefit of IMO. He joined the Organization, first as Chief of Staff, followed by Administrative Director - leading the Organization through the COVID-19 pandemic. Directly prior to his election in July 2023 as Secretary-General, he was the Director of the Marine Environment Division.
His initial term as IMO Secretary-General was approved at the 33rd Assembly in December 2023.

Today on the show we speak to Daniel Hanna, Global Head of Sustainable Finance for the Corporate & Investment Bank at Barclays Plc. On the show we discuss Daniel’s views on COP28 and climate investments globally, as well as his personal background and work in the sector. Finally, he speaks on what Barclays is doing to accelerate decarbonisation efforts and unlock climate financing solutions.
Daniel has long been a pioneer in innovative financing solutions to deliver social & environmental impact, having previously worked at Standard Chartered were he developed some of the first blended finance bond products to address issues such as water access and education, as well as supporting the NEOM project to raise its first financing. At Barclays, Daniel plays a key role in helping the bank to deliver on its ambition to enable $1trillion of Sustainable and Transition Financing between 2023 and the end of 2030. This is supported through several areas including Barclays internal £500mn Principal Investments arm, which provides growth capital to leading innovators in clean energy such as GeoPura, ZeroAvia, Protium, Zedify, Naked energy and many more. Barclays has also designed new products, including an innovative structured debt product that enabled a $300mn facility with EV services provider Einride, as well as helping companies in their corporate financing journey by providing investment banking support for fund raises such as Ohmium’s $200mn capital raise through TPG rise. Battolyser is a Netherlands-based, electrochemistry company, who have developed an exciting hybrid electrolyser and battery storage solution. The company already has its first pilot plant in operation in the Netherlands and has recently secured significant funding from the European Investment Bank (EIB). This financing will accelerate the manufacturing scale of its product and introduce its solution to existing and new customers who are seeking innovative ways to incorporate intermittent renewable energy into different green energy storage vectors.

Sunita is the Director for the United States Department of Energy (DOE) Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office and coordinates activities across DOE offices for the DOE Hydrogen Program, which now includes roughly US$10B (including Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding).
Dr. Satyapal was also recently named Director of the Hydrogen Interagency Taskforce (HIT) which includes 11 federal agencies.
She has more than two and a half decades of experience across industry, academia, and government, including at United Technologies managing R&D and business development and as a co-Chair on various international hydrogen partnerships. She received her Ph.D. from Columbia University and did postdoctoral work in Applied and Engineering Physics at Cornell University. She has numerous publications, including in Scientific American, 10 patents, and various recognitions including two Presidential Rank Awards.

Pierre-Etienne spent a quarter century developing Air Liquide's businesses, managing the use, research, and development of hydrogen applications. As the Hydrogen Council’s initiative secretary, Pierre-Etienne and Air Liquide were joined by 12 other founding industry players, advocating for hydrogen to help foster the energy transition.
In 2021, Pierre-Etienne stepped away from Air Liquide to start a pure play hydrogen investment fund known as FiveT Hydrogen of which he is the Chairman. For the second episode in this new season, the team interviews Oghosa Erhahon to discuss hydrogen opportunities in Africa, including the African Climate Summit in September, and what to look forward to at COP28.
Oghosa is a lawyer with experience in strategy on intersectionality topics across energy, climate and low carbon systems towards sustainability. She has experience with governments, International Development and Management Consulting working with donor-funded projects and impact initiatives. These have included; U.S Agency for International Development (USAID), United Kingdom Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility (UKNIAF) and other donor funded institutions. Most recently, Oghosa was an Advisor for the GIZ Global Hydrogen Diplomacy Programme.
Oghosa is also co-author of the acclaimed ‘Touching Hydrogen Future’ book published by World Hydrogen Leaders in 2022. She has published several works and journals including Power in Nigeria - The Decade of Gas (2020), Natural Gas and the Energy Transition – Implications for the Nigeria Energy Industry (2022), and Lighting Africa’s Path to Sustainable Energy Transition - The Role of Green Bonds (2023).
She is develops Transforming Energy Access programmes; and has given sector-wide presentations, workshops, interviews, and a TEDx Talk on Carbon Neutrality. She is a notable contributor to social impact and Climate Change work streams, liaising with private businesses and organizations towards their Net-Zero ambitions, and Environment, Social and Governance Discourses.

Nel Asa has been manufacturing electrolysers since the 1940’s, with extensive deployments across the world in both PEM and Alkaline units.
Recently Nel announced a series of new contract orders above 20MW and a significant expansion in their electrolyser manufacturing capacity. Crucially this investment was not made in Europe, but rather in the USA with many (including Håkon) emphasising that the Inflation Reduction Act made the US unavoidable for key players.

Following a career in the private and public sector, Nataliya is the Founder of the Ukrainian Sustainable Fund. First, she headed the Corporate and Investment Department of DeVision Group at B&S Holding and then became Managing Partner of KCG Investment Consulting providing corporate and investment consulting on energy projects and sustainable development. Nataliya became a Member of the Ukrainian Parliament, VIII Convocation in 2014, and was appointed to the Committee on Fuel and Energy, Nuclear Policy, and Nuclear Safety and she was Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Sustainable Development, Strategy, and Investment.
In 2019, Nataliya founded the Ukrainian Sustainable Fund aimed at accelerating Ukraine’s renewable energy transition and bridging the gap between Ukrainian sustainable projects and leading international Green Institutions including renewables and hydrogen projects in the portfolio and pipeline.
Nataliya is an Atlantic Council Millennium Fellow, a member of the Aspen community, and a Member of the National Commission for Attracting Investments in Gas Production (nine PSA competitions for the development of strategic fields in Ukraine). She co-authored systemic economic and energy laws on natural gas and electricity markets, the regulation of energy services markets, unbundling of “Naftogaz”, protection of economic competition, and ensuring transparency of the AMCU.

Tom assumed the role of Executive Chairman of Cummins Inc. in August 2022. Previously, Tom served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for 10 years. Before that, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer from 2008 to 2011, Executive Vice President and President, Power Generation Business from 2003 to 2008, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer from 2000 to 2003, and Vice President of Supply Chain Management from 1998 to 2000.

On this episode we speak with Scott Weiss, Senior Vice President for Corporate Strategy, and Ashleigh Cotting, Senior Manager for Green Fuels Marketing with Apex Clean Energy. Apex has a history of developing utility scale renewables with more than 2GW under management and with nearly 8GW of renewables financed. Apex also partnered with Plug Power in April 2021 to develop a 345MW wind facility to support a 30 tonne per day green hydrogen production facility.

Continuing from previous episodes about encouraging global investment in green hydrogen, Patrick Molloy and Alicia Eastman speak with Ignacio de Calonje, Chief Investment Officer, IFC Global Infrastructure. Ignacio breaks down the role of the IFC and its relationship with other Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) to encourage decarbonization and bespoke solutions for the Global South.
Ignacio de Calonje:
Ignacio de Calonje is the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Global Infrastructure Department. He is based in London, and amongst other responsibilities, co-leads the IFC Global Green Hydrogen Hub team. IFC established a Green Hydrogen Hub team to bring together IFC expertise across the low carbon value chain and evaluate opportunities in the area.
In addition to this role, Ignacio also leads the IFC Sustainable Finance practice in the infrastructure space, focusing on supporting IFC clients to issue green, social, sustainability and sustainability-linked financial instruments. He is also responsible for managing a number of key IFC Western European clients in the energy and mining sectors. Prior to his posting in London, Ignacio was based in Istanbul, Cairo, and Washington DC. Ignacio has extensive experience in the field of international finance, having worked on numerous equity and debt investments in emerging markets. Ignacio was also a non-Executive Director of Alcazar Energy (a renewable energy company with 400 MW of solar and wind assets in operation in Egypt and Jordan) from 2019 to 2021 and non-Executive Director of Kuwait Energy (an oil & gas company with operations in Iraq, Egypt and Oman) from 2017 to 2019.
Ignacio holds a BSc in Business Administration from Universidad San Pablo-CEU (Madrid) and a Masters Degree from Columbia University (New York).

About Petra Schwager:
Petra Schwager is Chief of the Climate and Technology Partnership (CTP) Division, and Directorate of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Innovation and Economic Transformation (IET) of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). She has more than 20 years of experience in building up global and national programmes for inclusive and sustainable industrial development. She has worked closely with governments, financial institutions, universities and industries in more than 40 countries in Asia, Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, and Latin America.
At her current position at UNIDO, she develops and manages strategic partnerships and technical cooperation on climate and technology innovation. She heads the UNIDO Global Programme for Hydrogen in Industry promoting Green/Renewable Hydrogen in industry to support net zero industrial and economic transformation in developing and transition countries. In the past decade she worked with the European Federation of Energy Traders where she led Carbon Neutrality Strategy working on the evolution of wholesale energy and carbon market design in the EU.
Sustainability is a key priority and focus area for Daria and the Council. Hydrogen Council has a dedicated Sustainability Program supporting the development of global standards for hydrogen, certification schemes, Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”) dimensions of hydrogen & ESG reporting and disclosure frameworks. The Sustainability Program is currently developing an SDG roadmap for the hydrogen economy to identify best practices and pathways for unlocking the SDG benefits that hydrogen can create for both developing and developed countries.

Hysata claims it’s electrolysers require only 41.5 kWh to produce 1 kg of hydrogen (vs. 50-55+ kWh/kg for the best commercial electrolysers). This ultra-high efficiency exceeds the efficiency target of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) for the year 2050. On this episode of EAH, we sat down with Dr. Bo Cerup-Simonsen, Chief Executive Officer of the Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. Bo holds a PHD in Naval Architecture and Mechanical Engineering and spent seven years as a research engineer at MIT.
During his career, he has been responsible hundreds of leading-edge newbuilding, engineering, and technology projects, which have significantly contributed to safety, efficiency and competitiveness within shipping.
Bo was VP, Head of Newbuilding Strategy and Portfolio at Royal Caribbean Cruises, Director of the Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre, and VP, Head of Maersk Maritime Technology.
Bo also headed the Maritime Technical Consultancy of Det Norske Veritas (DNV, now DNVGL).
The Center is a not-for-profit, independent research and development organization accelerating the transition towards a net-zero future for the maritime industry. With their partners across the shipping and energy industries, they drive and facilitate the development and implementation of new pathways and technology solutions and standards required for systemic and regulatory change.

On this episode of EAH, we sat down with Alejandro Oyarce Barnett, Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder at Hystar. Hystar is a technology-focused company specializing in PEM electrolysers for hydrogen production using renewable energy. The company got its start as a spin-off from SINTEF, one of Europe’s largest independent research organizations and has raised private funding so the company can focus on production of its high-efficiency PEM units and keep pace with demand for hydrogen generation capacity. Hystar announced on January 11, 2023 that the company has closed a Series B funding round of USD 26mn to rapidly scale-up to full commercial operations with an automated GW-capacity production line by 2025. The globe is awash in waste materials and trash. The detritus of everyday life, much of it in the form of plastics, piles up and has dramatically detrimental effects on the environment if not properly disposed of and managed. When the pandemic recedes, lockdowns and restrictions are relaxed and eventually eliminated, and millions of residents in cities across the world begin to return to their offices and workplaces, public transit systems will once again be at the core of billions of commuters' daily activities. How do we get green hydrogen (and green ammonia) production to scale and make it cost competitive? It's a great question and we ask it all the time on the show. Decarbonizing aviation is a big challenge. It is one of the most carbon intensive business sectors in the modern world and change comes slowly to the aviation industry.
