Our primary focus will be on "U12" or "Little Rocks" curling, but this podcast will occasionally touch on topics of interest to U15/U18/U21 coaches and organizers. Coach Glenn Gabriel will offer advice, share resources and give you the occasional pick-me-up when you need it.

Early in 2023, I set up a Zoom call for several youth coaches in the Greater Toronto Area. We were there to talk about practice ideas and it was a successful meetup. Some of us wanted to do a follow-up, but I was at a loss for a topic to discuss.
That's when I heard from Mike Smith of the Lindsay (Ont.) Curling Club. He wanted to know how other people handled a wide range of kids with different ages, skill levels and experience. How do you run a curling program that fits all those kids?

Many sports run camps for kids during the summer vacation, but it's rare for curling. Oakville (Ont.) Curling Club, just west of Toronto, will be running its youth camp in late August. If you have a child that is active in other sports besides curling, you might know of sports where they test their skill levels and earn badges or pins or certificates. For years in Ontario, we had a program called the "Skill Awards" where kids, having learned certain curling skills, would earn a badge that they could sew on their jacket or sweater.
In today's episode, I speak with Beth Iskiw from Edmonton, Alberta. Beth has been involved with the development of a new national skills award program for Curling Canada called “RockStars.” We explain what the program is about, what feedback they’ve received from the pilot program, and how youth program organizers can get more information about it.

No matter which club or facility you curl at, the start of the season is an exciting time. Chances are it’s been a few months since you last saw the kids in your program, not to mention the volunteers and parents. And with your first practice approaching quickly, you’re thinking about what you need to do to prepare for “Day One."

In the Spring of 2022, Curling Canada introduced the “All Heart Junior Curler Award.” Young people are encouraged to create curling programs that focus on diversity and inclusivity. The 8 winners will receive a monetary award that is split between themselves and their club.
In this episode, I have a conversation with Karsten Sturmay of Edmonton, Alberta. We talk about how he got involved with the creation of this award, how it differs from the "For The Love of Curling" scholarships, and what his curling plans are for next season.

This episode is part of a series where I interview current and former competitive curlers to find out how they grew to love the sport of curling as a young person. Johnson Tao is a silver medallist at the 2022 Canadian U21 Curling Championships. He also curls for the University of Alberta and is one of the winners of the 2021 “For The Love Of Curling” Scholarships given out by Curling Canada. Who teaches people how to curl at your club? In many clubs, it’s an ongoing challenge to find people who are interested, qualified and available to teach new curlers. That also applies to those who coach and instruct young people. In this episode, I interview Delores McCallum, Tim McChesney & Helen Garside of the Oakville Curling Club in Oakville, Ontario. They were all involved with in establishing Oakville’s “Instructor Co-Op,” an instruction team that was founded to solve some of the challenges they experienced when it came to recruiting and training new coaches.

In August of 2020, Apple TV+ released the first season of Ted Lasso, the story of an American football coach who is hired to manage a soccer team in the English Premier League. After two seasons and 22 episodes, the show is a runaway hit, winning 7 Primetime Emmy awards in 2021, including “Outstanding Comedy Series.” In this episode, I speak with Sean Stevinson of Lafayette, Colorado, and Kim Tuck of Strathroy, Ontario. Since 1989, the Ray Kingsmith Memorial Bonspiel is held every December in the Greater Calgary Area of Alberta. The bonspiel is one of the oldest, most prestigious junior bonspiels in the country with arguably the biggest prize purse. In this episode, I speak with Andy Jones of the Calgary Youth Curling Association (CYCA) and Marlene Kingsmith, Ray's daughter. We talk about the history of the bonspiel, the life of its namesake, the CYCA, and why the prize money doubled at the most recent "Kingsmith" in December 2021.

Every February, the curling community celebrates "Curling Day In Canada." One of the events is a story contest put on by Curling Canada where curlers from across the country submit their stories in the hope of winning a prize. In January 2021, Cheryl Rajala of Sudbury, ON, wrote about an incredible moment at the U18 Northern Ontario Provincial Championships in March of 2020.

The state of Wisconsin has a long tradition of high school curling. It's also the only state in the U.S. that organizes a high school curling championship. In a first for the podcast, Coach Glenn takes a road trip for an in-person interview at the Oshawa (Ont.) Curling Club. On March 5, 2022, OCC hosted its Youth Funspiel, which hosted many U12 and U21 teams from clubs across the Greater Toronto Area.

In 2021, the Government of Canada declared September 30 as "National Day For Truth And Reconciliation." According to the Govt. of Canada Web site: "The day honours the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities." In this episode, Coach Glenn explains why this day is important to him and shares some actions he is planning to take to broaden his knowledge of Indigenous issues.

THE "CURLING AS A KID & BEYOND!" SERIES: Episode #2
This episode is part of a series where I interview current and former competitive curlers to find out how they grew to love the sport of curling as a young person. In addition, I'll ask some of them what it's like to coach young people. And, in other cases, I'll ask them what it's like having their own children in the sport.
In 2019, a TSN poll named Jill Officer the greatest female second in Canadian curling history. In this episode, I ask her how she first got involved in the sport and when she decided to take the sport more seriously. We discuss the challenges of teaching kids and what she considered when her own daughter decided to take up the sport. Finally, we talk about her current goals and what she'll be doing for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

NEW SERIES! PRESENTING "CURLING AS A KID & BEYOND!": Episode #1
This is the first episode in a series where I interview current and former competitive curlers to find out how they grew to love the sport of curling as a young person. I'll also be asking these curlers about their experience coaching youth. And, in some cases, I'll ask them about what it's like having their own children in the sport.
Kerry Galusha is a longtime competitive curler and member of the famous Koe curling family. In the Summer of 2021, Bayview Golf & Country Club (located just north of Toronto) voted to close its curling program. It was the latest club in the Greater Toronto Area to end its curling program, part of a trend in the last 10-15 years of golf clubs deciding to close their curling sections. In this episode, I speak with Bayview curling member, former Bayview Curling Manager and competitive curler Julie Hastings. We discuss what led to the club's decision, what will become of the curling membership (including the youth curlers), and talk about the legacy of the club.

In July 2021, Curling Canada announced that they were injecting $200,000 toward the creation of new grassroots programs for youth. Do we think about what our young curlers eat, even if it's what we feed them for snack after practice? In this episode, I speak with Melissa Kazan, a registered dietitian (RD) and sport nutritionist in Richmond Hill, ON. What sets his content apart from other sports psychology resources is the fact that it's produced by teens for teens and kids. Brittany Tran is a competitive curler from Alberta who recently participated in the 2021 Scotties and Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship in the Calgary "bubble." An Asian-Canadian, she decided last year to step up and help with Curling Canada's and Curling Alberta's Diversity and Inclusivity initiatives, including CC's new D&I digital resource guide. Stephanie Thompson is a registered kinesiologist and owner of Empowered Performance in Markham, ON. In January 2021, she was one of five recipients of a Gender Equity Award grant from Curling Canada. Her plan was to create a "virtual group fitness program for young girls, focusing on reducing curling-related injuries." In January 2021, Curling Canada announced the winners of its first-ever Gender Equity Awards. One of those winners was Stephen Fish, who is the Little Rocks coordinator at Niagara Falls (Ont.) Curling Club. In this episode, Stephen joins me to talk about the project, which is "to put on a mentorship program featuring women mentor curlers working with girls ages 10-15 in the club’s Little Rocks program."

Matt Bean only started curling about five years ago, but in that short time, he (a) won a silver medal in Quebec's "Colts" competition, (b) earned his competition coach certification and (c) created the "Curling Class" Web site.
