Our first story is from Emily and she heard it from the lovely Liz Weir, who appeared in season 2. This is Liz's favourite spooky story for little ones with a nice surprise at the end. Make sure you use your spookiest voices!
Our second story is from Leo and it's a little bit creepy - The Cursed Doll - but it's actually a joke that's been turned into a story. So if you're brave enough to hold on until the end, you'll get a good giggle.

Hello listeners! We hope you're enjoying the merry month of May! It's half term holidays here in the UK and I’m off to tell stories of shipwrecks and pirates at the famous Chatham Historic Dockyard. If you're in the area, come and say hello!
This episode's story is also a tale from the sea - and comes all the way from Chile in South America. Off the coast of Chile there is a beautiful island called Chiloe – it is home to lots of rare and endangered animals – including penguins! But old stories tell of another creature that lives beneath the waves – the pincoya. The pincoya are mythicial sea fairies - a bit like mermaids who live in an underwater world. They are generally very wary of humans and some say that when a poor sailor is lost or drowned at sea, the pincoya guide them to a great phantom ship called the Caleuche which sails the sea for all eternity - JEEPERS!

The Cheyennes were once a warrior tribe, but they have a great tradition of storytelling and living in balance with the land and nature around them. They respect nature so much …. Believe that nature is sacred and that everything has its own spirit. Hi story lovers! We're off to look for pixies on Dartmoor for this lovely folktale. Dartmoor is a real place and it's very magical! It's situated in the county of Devon, in the west of England. People have inhabited the moorland for about 10,000 years, but the land is ancient, stretching back into the primordial mist. It's an important reserve for rare plants and animals, and of course, PIXIES!
Pixies are mischievous sprites, a bit like fairies. They can be trixy but can also be kind to those who respect them.

Bonjour listeners! This episode, our story is from the city of Paris, France. It's a fairytale created by a writer called Pierre Gripari in the 1960s. When he was a boy, he read lots of traditional French fairy tales by Charles Perrault – like sleeping beauty and little red riding hood. And he loved them!
But when he grew up, he realised that he wanted fairytales that were about where he lived – the streets of Paris. So he made up his own. And this is our version of one of his most famous – the Witch of the Rue Mouffetarde. ‘Rue’ means street in French. This episode we have a famous legend from Wales, featuring the formidable witch goddess Ceridwen, who lives near the shore of Llyn Tegid.
The story of Ceridwen's Cauldron is very old and has many different versions, but they all feature her magic cauldron and a fabulous chase filled with transformation - thanks to the magic of Awen.
Awen is a Welsh and Breton word for 'inspiration', that magical feeling when your creativity flows beautifully. Think of a time when you have created or been part of something wonderful - maybe a drawing or painting, performing a song or some music, having an idea or telling a story!
That creative flow is Awen. And Ceridwen has a recipe for it!

Happy Holidays everyone! We are delighted to share part 1 of our Christmas Special with you!
Have you ever loved a toy so much you wished it came to life? Have you ever dreamed that you went on wonderful adventures with that toy that seemed so real?
Well, over two hundred years ago an author named E.T.A Hoffman wrote a beautiful story that enchanted children and grown ups - The Nutcracker & the Mouse King.
In fact, people loved the story so much that the famous Russian composer Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote some wonderful music and the story was turned into a famous ballet - The Nutcracker Suite.

Hello storylovers! This episode we have two great stories for you! Our first is from storyteller Sarah Rundle from West London.
Sarah has performed at Festivals all around the world, she’s told tales in museums and theatres, pubs and cafes. I love hearing Sarah’s stories because they’re often very funny and a bit crazy. And this is very famous old folktale called The Dauntless Girl. It's a slightly spooky story about a girl who thinks she’s not scared of anything – even ghosts!

Emily's story is a fishy tale made famous by the fabulous Brothers Grimm. The two brothers Wilhelm and Jacob came from Germany and travelled far and wide collecting folktales and fairy tales. They wrote famous verions of Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, The Bremen Town Musicians and hundreds of other well-loved tales.

We hope you're looking forward to SUMMER TIME! We've been out in the garden weeding and tidying, learning new songs and playing instruments, and playing Dungeons and Dragons with friends. We've also been walking around London lots, exploring its hidden parts, picking up facts and stories.

Leo's story is an old Japanese tale about soothing babies - something we've all done - and we continue to pass down these techniques through the generations.
Our main story is a very famous Japanese fairytale -Momotaro, the Peach boy. He is a famous hero in Japanese folklore and there is a statue of him and his animal companions in Okoyama. (a bit like the Bremen Town Musicians!)

Welcome, one and all to the Merry Merry month of May!
May day is a really lovely time of year – we celebrate the beginning of summer,
which in the Celtic wheel is called Bealtaine. (which is actually Gaelic for the month of May)
The earth is tilting towards the sun here in the northern hemisphere and the warm season is coming. If the sun were a few degrees nearer we would burn up. And if the sun were a few degrees farther away all life on earth would be frozen.

Our story is a very old Mayan story about a dwarf king.
The Mayans were an ancient civilisation from what’s now Mexico and Central America. They lived in huge cities, had great stone pyramids and believed in lots of different gods.
They also came up with their own calendars – they were really good at maths and astronomy.And there are people in Central America today who live like the ancient Mayans and eat the same sort of food - maize.

And We have a very special treat for our listeners this episode. Emily was fortunate enough to be asked to judge a story-writing competition based around the mysterious Westenhanger Castle, believed to be owned by Henry VIII.
There’s a possibly a new garden town being built nearby called Otterpool Park and they ran the storywriting competition.
The entrants were between the ages of 7 and 14 years old and the winners were given prizes, including doing a story workshop with Emily!
From over 40 entries, the judges chose 3 winners. We will be featuring all three stories on the podcast. And we have one of the winners for this episode. Her name is Clementine and she is 10 years old.
Our story is a chain tale from the Punjab. There are lots and lots of parts to this story. Can you remember them all and the order they come in?

Emily's story is from Norway. And many people believe the story is true. There is a lake in Norway called Whale lake
Because in this lake have been discovered the huge bones of what was once a mighty whale that terrorized the fjords and seas around Norway and greenland
Hundreds of years ago, sailors would hunt wales for their blubber. They would melt the blubber down into oil that was then used for street lights, cosmetics and explosives. Whale hunting was incredibly dangerous and there are lots of songs about about it – as sailors would spend very long times at sea, making up stories, singing songs and crafting. Jon is a Brighton-based storyteller known for his captivating delivery and love of roots: folktales and myths that connect our history and our present, our surroundings and ourselves. He performs regularly at festivals, in schools, online, and his shows have appeared in the Brighton Festival and Fringe. Our story comes from Italy - a city called Siena in the province of Tuscany.
Hundreds of years ago, some of the greatest artists in the world lived and trained in Italy. You may have heard of some of them. Leonardo Da Vinci, is probably one you have heard of - great name, huh?
This tale is about a young boy learning to be an artist, but also wanting to have fun and be with his friends.

It is a tale from Northern Ireland about the mystical and magical Faerie Thorn tree. I first heard the wonderful Liz Weir MBE tell a version of this at the Glens of Antrim Story Festival.

‘Now, if you don’t know about faerie thorns, you should. The Big People call these trees hawthorns, and in May you can see them scattering snow-blossoms in every direction. The Big People know that the Little People live in the roots of these trees, so the wisest Big People make sure that the faerie thorns are left well alone.

Carl was once a teacher and ran storytelling clubs and story days in schools to engage children with storytelling.
He’s been a professional storyteller for over 20yrs, and has performed at loads of festivals, theatres, community groups and schools across the country. He’s performed in medieval costume too at re-enactment days. He loves the history and folklore of Essex and has devised lots of stories about ancient burial grounds, witch trials.

She is a traditional storyteller and musician, passionate about myth, and traditional tales. In 2018 she performed at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, TN and is the creator and producer of the Story Story Podcast, featuring wonderful tellers and tales from around the world (including us!). Rachel's story is an old folktale from Ireland.
Our story has many many versions all around the world - Africa, Malaysia, Korea - but this is a Japanese version of the story. It features the Hare of Inaba, who is in other Japanese tales. In this story, the clever little hare gets the better of some snappy crocodiles.

It's November and things have been going with a whizz and a bang! On the 5th November, we celebrate Bonfire Night here in the UK, to commemorate the failed gunpowder plot of 1605. A group of Catholic conspirators attempted to blow up King James I and the Houses of Parliament. They failed, but we still celebrate today with bonfires and firework displays! Today is also the 11th November, also known as Remembrance day or Poppy Day. At 11am on the 11th November in 1918, the first world war finally came to an end. So on this special day every year, people remember those who have died in all wars, not just WW1, by holding a two minute silence for them. You can learn more about it HERE.
Our first story this episode is from our guest teller Amy Douglas.
Amy is a word-hoarder, a word-storer, a word-catcher and a word explorer. She plays with words, riddles and puzzles.
She likes hide and seek, jumping in puddles, getting muddy, treasure hunts and has a favourite tree where she likes to sit with a book and an apple.

Our second story is a very very old tale from the Australian Aboriginal people. They do not have a written down language, so their wisdom is passed down through word of mouth, symbols and beautiful art work.
Aboriginal people of Australia believe that the Dreamtime was way back, in the very beginning of time. Everything was created by ancestor spirits. They made the rivers, streams, water holes hills, rocks, plants and animals. They believe the earth is sacred, and should be honoured and protected. Our first story this episode is from our guest teller Pyn Stockman. Pyn is a professional storyteller who lives on a boat! She loves fairy tales, folktales, all sorts of stories! Pyn tells at festivals, community events, schools and libraries. She really enjoys using props and masks to bring her stories to life. The story she shares was created with young people in Birmingham as part of the Secret City Arts project and is about Friendship.
Our second story is an old tale from Micronesia, a group of Islands in the Pacific Islands. Did you know Mogmog is a real island? Thankfully, there isn't an evil spirit there now! We love how brave the younger sister is in this story.

Maria takes traditional tales and makes them her own, breathing life into characters and taking the listener on journeys of magic and myth. Her favourite stories are those that leave you feeling that all is well in the world…..perhaps those are just the sort of stories we need at the moment…
Our second story is an old old Yiddish tale about a tailor who finds that, with a little ingenuity and hard work, he can make something new from something old. We got lots of inspiration from Helen East's version of this tale. You can find her version in an excellent book called

We thought it would be fitting to end the season with a story from Leo - he tells the tale that is sometimes called 'Regrets'. There are lots of different versions of this tale and it makes you think about choices you make. We all have regrets but it's best to learn from a bad to decision and move on, than spend your whole life regretting.
Emily's story is a funny version of a Pig and Bear tale from Slovakia. Pig and Bear get up to all sorts and this story they try selling food - it doesn't go very well though!

Carl was once a teacher and ran storytelling clubs and story days in schools to engage children with storytelling.
He’s been a professional storyteller for over 20yrs, and has performed at loads of festivals, theatres, community groups and schools across the country. He’s performed in medieval costume too at re-enactment days. He loves the history and folklore of Essex and has devised lots of stories about ancient burial grounds, witch trials.

Our story is an old trickster folktale from ancient China - it features a recurring character called Lazy Dragon, who is a thief. But he only steals from the rich, and gives what he steals to the poor and needy - a bit like Robin Hood. Most of the stories are a bit grown up, but we thought you'd like this one!

Eamonn loves telling stories from Irish lore, particularly stories of heroes, fairies and ghosts. He learned many stories from his father, who was also a storyteller and a singer.
Now Eamonn tells stories to children and adults and has told in many different countries England Ireland, Finland, USA and Australia.

Our story is an old folktale that has travelled the world - it has been told by travelling communities, such as the Romani, for centuries. It has lots of names but is usually called 'The Three Golden Hairs of the Sun King'.

Valentine is an actor and storyteller from East London. He's played lots of characters from history and told of their lives to audiences and families in schools, museums, heritage sites and, most recently, online to families at home.
Valentine likes to tells stories from African and Caribbean folklore.
This particular tale is a Swahili story called The Heart of the Monkey. Swahili is a language spoken in countries like Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in East of Africa.

Our story is in celebration of the Gaelic/Celtic festival Bealtaine, also known as May Day across Europe. It's a fire festival, and like the Samhain, a time when faery folk are about.

The story is part folktale, part original tale. We took lots of influence from the Estonian Folktale 'Mikku and the Trees', retold by Margaret Read MacDonald, for the first part.
But the arrival of the Green goddess is our own imagining of what she looks like, how she speaks and, most importantly, what she wants us to remember. We are all guardians of nature and the earth.

Sef has spent many years animating children and adults through the medium of story, language, rhythm and song and he is equally at home in a nursery school; in the family atmosphere of a local festival; or at a national museum.
Recent work has taken him from shantytown schools in South Africa to the British Museum; from the Korean Traditional Performing Arts Centre to remote villages in the West Bank.
In the last couple of years he has shared stories, given workshops and conducted his own research in Belgium, China, Italy, Argentina, and Chile, as well as writing ‘London Folktales for Children’, with colleague Anne Johnson, and their ‘London’s River Folktales for Children’ will be published by The History Press early next year.

Wendy Shearer is a Storyteller and Writer, with a love for bringing folktales, myths, and legends to life. She tells stories at festivals, in schools, and venues including The British Museum, Shakespeare’s Globe, and the Royal Academy of Arts.
Wendy’s repertoire is drawn mostly from her Afro-Caribbean heritage. She tells tales of trickster, spirits, and shapeshifters, peppered with memories handed down from her Grandmother.
Her first two books: ‘African and Caribbean Folktales, Myths and Legends’ and ‘Caribbean Folktales with Windrush Migration Stories’, will be published by Scholastic and The History Press in 2021.
Our story is all about the wise fool Nasruddin.
He’s a wonderful character whose tales are told all across the Islamic world – India, Pakistan, the middle east, turkey, Afghanistan, even parts of Greece, Albania, Macedonia, Russia, even China.
Mullah Nasruddin is sometimes called 'Hodja' – which means master, and his lessons are very interesting. He gets up to all sorts of funny antics, but we also learn that he can be unusually wise. Lots of people go to him to advice – from peasants to Emperors.

Happy St Patrick's Day (for yesterday). As you know, Emily & Leo are of Irish heritage and on the 17th March we celebrate the patron saint of Ireland - Saint Patrick.

Our little Irish lullaby at the end is a famous song called 'The Castle of Dromore'. Emily's parents used to sing it to her and she sang it to Leo when he was a baby.
There is an Irish Gaelic phrase in the song ' A pháiste bán a stór'. It means 'my fair-haired darling'. Awwww!

Giles is a writer and voice artist, but he became a storyteller about 20 years ago when he suffered sudden (but not total) loss of sight. He found he couldn’t see someone across a table or read books and stories. So he fell in love with the art of TELLING stories.
Giles is the UK’s only blind professional storyteller and has told stories at festivals all over the country – and around the world too!

Our story is an old folktale with many versions from many lands. Some people believe it is an old Cherokee tale. The Cherokees are from North America and have a deep connection to their ancestors, nature, spirits and oral storytelling. You can read more Native American tales HERE.

Emily's story is an old folktale from Somerset called the Apple Tree Man. In the olden days, people would honour the trees and the gods of winter by singing songs, pouring cider or beer on the roots of fruit trees to ensure a good harvest the following year. This is called wassailing. We hope you like our version of this old tale - there is a great version by John Kirkpatrick HERE.

This episode comes from the fabulous collection - The Arabian Nights. The stories are told by the character Scheherazade, who tells a story every night for 1001 nights so that her husband, the King, will keep her alive. Yikes!
The famous composer Rimsky Korsakov took several of the stories from the collection and turned them into pieces of music. The voice of the storyteller Scheherazade was represented by a solo violin. You can listen to a clip here.

This episode, we are telling a folktale from Sicily, which is an island south of Italy. It has a volcano on the island, called Mount Etna!
There are lots of versions of this type of folktale - but this is our version.

Episode 8 – Anansi and Turtle
Welcome to the next episode of Dragonfly Tales, a story podcast for children of all ages.
This episode, we introduce a classic story archtype - The Trickster!
Anansi the spider is a trickster - he's sneaky, funny and a bit lazy too!
The Anansi stories were first told by the Ashanti people in Ghana, a country in West Africa. They were not written but passed down through telling from generation to generation. Until they had spread far and wide. They spread across oceans to the Caribbean – they crossed continents and are now told all over the world.

Episode 7 – Odysseus and the Cyclops

This episode, our tale is THOUSANDS of years old. It’s a very long epic and we only had time to tell a part of it. If you liked the story and want to follow Odysseus on the rest of his journey, we’d recommend this version by Daniel Morden and Hugh Lupton – two amazing storytellers - The Adventures of Odysseus.

Episode 5 – The Faerie Thorn
Welcome to the next episode of Dragonfly Tales, a story podcast for children of all ages.
This episode is a tale from Northern Ireland about the mystical and magical Faerie Thorn tree. I first heard the wonderful Liz Weir MBE tell a version of this at the Glens of Antrim Story Festival.
Here is an extract from Jane Talbot’s wonderfully dark collection of fairy tales, The Faerie Thorn:
‘Now, if you don’t know about faerie thorns, you should. The Big People call these trees hawthorns, and in May you can see them scattering snow-blossoms in every direction. The Big People know that the Little People live in the roots of these trees, so the wisest Big People make sure that the faerie thorns are left well alone.
Here are the instructions for making Leo’s fairy tree:
You will need:
· A big sheet of blank paper and a pencil
· Some prittstick or gloopy glue
· Some twigs and branches
· Lots of different sized leaves
· Some little gems or shiny buttons
· And some glitter
First, draw an outline of a tree in winter on your paper. Try to make your branches nice and big and do lots of them.
Next, using your glue, stick your twigs down over your outline so you have a winter tree.
Next turn your tree into a summer tree by sticking on your leaves. The more leaves you add the fuller your tree will look.
You can also add little flowers to your tree too – to make it more spring like.
Finally, to make it a fairy tree, stick some gems or buttons onto your tree and then shake over some glitter. And now you have a magical fairy tree!
