Digital Photography and Artistry: Recent Episodes

Jim G Everett

Whether you want to create stunning images, or just use your digital camera for life's memories, there is something here for you. Recent episodes show Aperture and Lightroom (coming June 2011). Jim Everett is an Australian living in Los Angeles - a photographic artist and entertaining presenter who demystifies technology for the new user. He has been a repeat guest on the popular G4 Tech TV Canada "The Lab With Leo Laporte" show (see episodes here), and is a regular contributor to Photo Marketing Association for consumer digital imaging. Three of these podcasts have been featured on Canadian G4 Tech TV series "Torrent". Jim's photos were included in 2007 in a 4-month exhibition at LAX and Ontario International Airports in Los Angeles, "Distinctive Artists of Southern California". Why, when and how to add drama and appeal to selected images, using Aperture's vignette tool and adjustments panel. Draws on a photo shoot I did with friends around Boulder Creek, in California's Santa Cruz Mountains. This was in 2006, after a rainy season, and the whole forest was green, wet and mossy.

Starting this series around Aperture is a labor of love for me. In this first episode, I share what I am looking for when I photograph, how I think about my photographic art, and how Aperture supports that creativity. Lots of my images from around North America and the world are used in this episode as illustrations. Future episodes will go into more detail and depth on finding, shooting and creating individual images.

*iPhone version (.m4v). This first iPhoto episode shows a couple of easy but important fine tunes - the value of cropping, and WHY giving the image some subtle enhancements can lift it out of the ordinary. These episodes are more about the WHY, WHAT and WHEN, rather than details of the HOW. There are plenty of excellent videos tutorials by other people on how to use iPhoto features. I want to share a few tips on why, what and when I enhance and adjust certain images.
