Hello there!

I had the opportunity to sit down with Hilary Blair, MFA from Articulate. We had the opportunity to discuss why and how event leaders struggle with communication. Almost every event professional that I converse with about their high levels of stress shed light on how communicating with clients and leaders only elevate their stress.

What I enjoyed about the episode with Hilary, is how she shared some simple frameworks like "sci-fi" to help us all understand how we can be more self-aware, curious, and intentional for impact. Such an easy thing to learn, but you can keep her framework as a tool in almost every situation.

I hope you get a little nugget of goodness that you can apply to your life in this episode! Enjoy.

Goal setting can be stressful. This episode aims to take the stress out of the goal setting that you have to make. As we move into the second quarter of the year, it's important that we look at how we develop our goals without causing ourselves much stress, here are some tips that are mentioned in the episode:

  • Set your goals and direction
  • Get moving
  • Put in place your habits
  • Stay about the line
  • Review often
  • Reward yourself

Many times we fail to start because of fear or because we lack direction. This episode will help you understand how important it is for you to develop a direction and start to get moving so that your goal can be obtained.

You'll also learn some insights on practicing great habits, and why habits are important. Also, your mindset and how you think about your success is very important. When you think debilitating thoughts then you limit yourself and by limiting yourself you can miss the mark in getting to your goal. So it's all about staying above the line, being positive and uplifting to yourself and your team about your goal.

Finally making sure that you review your goals often and reward yourself when you complete your goals are pretty important. And we also talk about tracking your goal too and how that can be increasingly helpful as you look to finish your goals.

In this episode, I explore the neuroscience of kindness with special guest, Janet Sperstad, CMP-Fellow and Faculty Emeritus for Madison College.

Janet Sperstad’s professional history reflects her lifelong vocation: driving excellence in meeting and event management execution and education. She has dedicated her career to defining the competencies and career pathways that articulate meeting planning as a design discipline requiring skills in the social sciences, executive leadership, and the cognitive sciences. Her contributions are global in scope and rooted in over 25 years as a meeting professional and executive leader in the corporate and non-profit sectors.

This is part two in a series where we unlock some more areas of neuroscience and how it can apply to our lives as event professionals. If you missed Part 1, where we discuss the neuroscience of stress and resilience, you can check it out here.

The fine print of this episode comes down to: kindness matters when we are planning events. As we lead our events, it's important to understand how kindness plays a big role in helping you solve problems, deal with stressful situations, and even become more creative on the spot.

In this episode, Janet shares how 90% of the conversations that we have are social in nature. She shares how our brain is a very social organ in which its natural set point is to commune with others. Additionally, kindness is a neurochemical and a culture. It can ignite the reward center in our brain and it is pro-social in nature craving community with other human beings. Thus, our brain cultivates commonalities, it wants to look for belonging and collaboration and is wired to look out for differences.

Furthermore, Janet teaches us that there is a language of kindness, and how every word we use to portray kindness can cascade across people. As event professionals when we get into a period of frustration or stress or just solving a problem, responding in kindness can help to minimize the stress and frustration that is being emitted in the moment.

Lastly, we unpack that great ideas come to us best when we are relaxed. So when we are solving problems onsite ensuring that we are responding in kind ways that will produce more ideas for creative problem-solving can be helpful.

Stay until the end to hear some personal fun tidbits about Janet and her sharing the time when she was shown kindness that shook her to her core.

If you enjoyed the first episode, you'll love this one too.

In this episode, I explore the neuroscience of stress and resilience with special guest, Janet Sperstad, CMP-Fellow and Faculty Emeritus for Madison College.

As you listen to this episode, you'll learn that Janet grew up with the philosophy of "a rising tide rises all boats.", and that has been how she has lived a life of helping others and in turn, it helps her in some way.

Through curiosity, Janet started finding out clear connections in what we do in our events around education and saw the connection in social science. On this personal journey, Janet was able to go deep and see things about how we work as event professionals.

Two of the main things Janet has learned in all of her studies that she wanted to share in this episode are this:

  1. With threat, we run from danger. We look for threat and we respond to threat.
  2. We love happiness. We feel good and love laughter and relaxation.

The brain goes towards threat, and it wants to keep you safe. So, enter the conversation on how stress can have an impact on your brain and how you can lessen the impacts and become more resilient.

Because in essence, we run from threat, and we walk toward reward.

If you're feeling stressed out as an event planner. It doesn't have to control you. Let it go. As soon as you let it go, it loses power.

"We can't handle the externalities that come for us, we can only handle how we react to them." - Janet Sperstad

Janet gives us a brief solution on how you can relieve stress in the moment, whether you are at your desk frustrated at an email or onsite having to deal with a high-stress situation

Wash your hands with warm water, take three big breaths…pull your shoulders back and walk away.

It's as simple as that. This episode is full of lots of hidden gems for you to use to help you not only understand how your brain works, but give you tangible tips on how to combat stress, and tough times in this industry so that you can stay in the game.

When you can reduce attendee stress at an event, you can decrease the stress you have too. If an attendee feels comfortable, taken care of, and relaxed, they can be at their best for learning and are happier, which in turn means you can feel a little bit more at ease as you are planning.

This episode covers 6 different areas to reduce attendee stress at your event. As you listen to this episode, it's important that you understand that implementing all of these ideas isn't necessary. However, these ideas may make you aware of some small tweaks you want to make at your event in the direction of stress relief and wellness.

The six areas that we unpack in this podcast episode are:

  • Building longer breaks
  • Encourage networking
  • Create convenience
  • Provide rest opportunities
  • Give space for physical movement
  • Create healthy opportunities

There is a wealth of ideas in each of these areas, and several of them are mentioned in this podcast episode. When we think about our attendees' well-being it can be meaningful to know that you have a unique opportunity to bring wellness to them while they are experiencing your event. It's an honor that we shouldn't take lightly.

However, as much planning as you do for your attendees, make sure to also take care of yourself. Make sure that while you're onsite, you're making healthy choices for yourself and that uplifts your well-being too.

Many of us don't realize that we are in toxic jobs until it is too late. So this episode will provide you with 5 signs that you should be aware of to check and see if you are in a toxic job that may be headed downhill fast.

This episode comes with the understanding that we are in the event industry, an industry that has an immense amount of pressure, high-touch clients, and high amounts of stress. It is meant to highlight situations that go beyond what's acceptable. However, maybe if we find that this is a standard, then what is 'acceptable' may have to be adjusted to save many of our treasured talent people from burning out and leaving the industry.

The 5 signs that are discussed on this podcast episode are:

  1. Being sick and fatigued to the point of exhaustion
  2. High amount of turnover at an organization
  3. Stagnancy within the organization - no growth
  4. A clear and consistent lack of the respect of boundaries
  5. Harrassment and bullying by co-workers and event clients

One thing is for sure. These situations in their most potent form are not okay and do not support overall well-being and mental health of the person impacted. If these signs are experienced, then bringing awareness through conversation is a good first step, allowing for resolution. However, if these situations persist, then moving away could be the best outcome.

There is a segment of burnout that isn't typically discussed. It has to do with how diversity impacts the burnout experience, and in this episode, we dig deeper into the black experience with burnout.

Black people have a different experience than many others when it comes to burnout. Much of the reason why they experience more burdensome impacts of burnout is due to the marginalization, along with other systemic challenges in the world.

More specifically, black women experience burnout more than any other group due to these same challenges. Additionally, black women experience things like black maternal mortality, weathering, glass ceilings, and tokenism that all contribute to the continued battle that they face daily.

This episode uncovers many of these insights and also offers to the reader what they can do to not only support this community but also to elevate the conversations in their department and in their organizations so that we help make changes that impact us all.

As we are planning events, we can experience overwhelm and burnout from all different directions. Many times, we triage this ourselves, but when the going gets tough it can be helpful to take our situations to an event leader to get feedback and perhaps collaborate on the best way forward in our work.

So how do you talk to your event leaders about burnout? One of the first steps before talking to your event leader is to reflect on your situation. Think through all different areas of your situation, specifics on what the true challenge is, and work out any recommendations for resolutions so that your event leader knows that you've thought things through.

After reflecting on your situation, create a few opportunities for enhancement that you can present during your conversation with the event leader. This will open up the conversation in the direction in which you see an effective resolve, but then also allow the leader to collaborate on the solution alongside you.

This episode shares ideas on how to approach your leader and gives key questions that you can ask to really analyze your challenges in a way that is supportive of you and the business.

At the end of the day, put yourself first, don't suffer from burnout in silence. Do the big thing, and talk to your leader to get the help you need.

When it comes to change, many times we try to make changes happen in our lives, but there are times when change is hard to grasp. When this happens, it can be hard to not take it personal, but the fact that change isn't happening isn't always what it appears to be at the surface.

In this episode, we unpack 5 specific areas of behavior change and try to understand that becoming more aware of these stages it may help us determine if we are actually ready for the changes that we seek.

The 5 stages that we unpack are:

  • Precontemplation
  • Contemplation
  • Preparation
  • Action
  • Maintenance

Once we are able to maintain our goals, we may think that we are golden. However, things do happen, and many times unforeseen setbacks to occur. This is known as a relapse phase. The key to getting out of a relapse phase is to understand the trigger, or the setback in detail and how perhaps the barrier was broken. Then develop a strategy to prevent it from happening again, and continue to move forward in the maintenance phase.

In working through these phases, we are more apt to meet our goals.

It's been said that if you do something consistently, you'll tap into a superpower and gain momentum. And with that momentum, you'll start to realize that you are absolutely capable of changing your circumstances and behavior.

Now, this is absolutely true when it comes to your event planning career. The changes that you want to make, the behaviors that you're willing to work on, and the dedication that you want to give, requires making big changes. To make those big changes, it starts with the little things done repeatedly.

And it matters…the consistency that you put in, can do nothing but stack up, one small step at a time, you rise higher….however inconsistency can ruin it all. Being inconsistent in your event career can kill your confidence, and it can mess up your ability to succeed for that matter.

Everyone struggles with the need to be more consistent in some element of their career. Hopefully, this podcast episode will help you see that the small steps you take are what will eventually make the biggest impact. All you have to do is start.

It's still the top of the year, you've created goals, but have yet to share them with anyone else. Is this you?

Well there are advantages to sharing your event goals with others, and in this episode, I unpack 5 key reasons that you should consider it this year.

The goals that event planners carry can be pretty heavy to carry on our own. By sharing your event goals it allows you to share this load with others. It's understandable that you may not be ready to share it. However, you'll find that if you keep it to yourself, you also could potentially shoulder most of the work.

I'm a big advocate for sharing your goals and here are my reasons which I unpack in this episode:

  • For accountability
  • For encouragement
  • To get them done
  • For assistance
  • For celebration

I hope you consider sharing your event goals this year, to bring others on this amazing journey with you.

How do you leverage positivity in your event teams? Studies have shown that being more positive, more open, with more gratitude, can really help encourage your event team, and perhaps even inspire them to dig deeper to make things happen for you and your events.

In this episode, Naomi unpacks some of the research of Barbara Fredrickson, professor and author of the book Positivity. We look at the positivity ratio, coined by Barbara Fredrickson, we see that typically many people have a ratio of 2:1. However, the standard ratio is 3:1, which means that for every one negative feeling or remark, it takes 3 positive remarks or feelings to overcome its effect.

This is a big deal because, in the world of meetings and events, stress is an understatement. We are constantly challenged with demanding timelines and high expectations, and if we aren't checking our mindset at every turn, there are bound to be some negative effects happening due to the pressure alone.

Positivity can be the superpower that helps to combat the stress, the overwhelm, and the toxic situations that occur in these deplorable situations. And if we can spread this practice and raise the bar just a little, we could see better retention in our talent and our event professionals and their clients will once more find joy in what they do.

Taking the Certified Meeting Professional Examination isn't easy by all means. You have to be eligible to apply to take the examination. After being accepted, you have to take the examination within a year.

In your wait to take your examination the best possible thing you should do is study for your exam. Now there is a lot of information in the texts of the EIC Manual and the PMM Manual, but taking the information in small doses can prove to be useful to you. This means planning on studying one skill at a time, or perhaps one domain a week.

Reading the texts provided is certainly very helpful. These manuals do not come into existence easily. It takes a lot of hard work. So you can rest assured that you have everything you need in both of the texts for you to be able to pass your examination.

Finally, understanding that there are aspects of event planning that are always at the forefront. Understanding what those are and knowing that perhaps you may have to know things like gamification, sustainability, or even virtual events can be useful.

We hope this episode was useful to you in helping you pass the examination to get your CMP.

In this episode, we welcome a special guest Melva LaJoy as she discusses emergency preparedness for event planners.

Before you jump in, here is a little bit about Melva:
As an award-winning event producer, Melva LaJoy Legrand is the CEO and founder of DC-based event planning firm, LaJoy Plans. She is also a nationally recognized public speaker, creative director, writer, and community leader dedicated to missions rooted in race and gender equality, as well as higher education.

In this episode, Melva and Naomi discuss many areas starting with unpacking your purpose and passion as an event planner. Melva shares how she unlocked her passion as she started her business.

Melva's advice for event planners who are starting out and trying to find out what their passions are: do everything. She presses that the only way that you know what you like or don't like, is to do everything and figure it out.

Event planners will know when they are in the right assignment, when the challenge is equally rewarding, and the stress non-existent because you're delighted by the work instead of resenting it.

As we get into event preparedness discussions in this episode, Melva shares three steps to help triage the challenges and conflicts that show up at events.

  1. Be proactive
  2. Talk and educate about safety and wellness
  3. Get CPR Certified

As we deepen our conversations about emergency preparedness, Melva shares how collaboration with other security professionals can be an advantage to event planners when challenged with emergency situations. Paying attention to cultural cues, and developing relationships with others who may know more about specific concerns may be the best way to ensure your attendees are safe.

Finally, Melva discusses the challenges with stress and overwhelm in the event industry. She shared many tips, however, offered these five tips for those who struggle with maintaining their sanity when planning events.

  1. If your work is costing you yourself, then you should find other work
  2. At the end of your work day or a challenge, have a celebration
  3. Have an accountability buddy (at home, and in the industry)
  4. Communicate with clients and team
  5. Laugh, because laughter puts things in perspective

Melva also shared some insights on her life in France at the end of the episode. It was so great to get to know her and we are thankful she was able to be our guest on the podcast!

Gor Gyulkhasyan joins the Planners on Purpose podcast to discuss social event trends insights from Permeet. Permeet is a digital planning tool that can be used when planning social events like birthdays, anniversaries, and even weddings.

Social event trends can be here today, and gone tomorrow, however, Gor highlights key trends that he's currently seeing when it comes to those planning and using the Permeet App to include:

  • Personalized and unique experiences are still leading as a trend, everyone wants to find out how to infuse personality into their events.
  • Sustainability is making a comeback, and with social events, many like to see how they can incorporate sustainable gifts.
  • Digitalization is on the rise. No longer are planners using paper binders. There is an embracing of the use of digital tools, like Permeet for notetaking, planning, and sending invitations.
  • The impression of having an event in-person is back, and there is a focus on having heartfelt meaningful connections.
  • Many planners are stepping away from the luxurious and extravagant events to have a unique experience.
  • Hybrid celebrations are becoming more of a unique option that people are using to connect with their guests in different ways.

Gor and I had a discussion regarding AI, and how the use of different solutions are rarely being implemented especially with personal events.

When asked about the struggles that people have when planning personal events, Gor had many, but mainly, people struggle with managing expectations. Aligning expectations so that there can be a universal enjoyable experience.

Gor says there is a fine line between tailoring individual preferences yet still ensuring that the event has a broad appeal for all the guests is a continuous struggle in personal events.

Another challenge that Gor commented on was regarding the event budget. He mentioned that ensuring a memorable experience while adhering to the budget and making choices that optimize cost and quality can be a continuous challenge.

Finally, Gor gave us some insight into the Permeet app and how it is a holistic tool to plan smaller personal events. This tool can give the planners some ease when it comes to "life plans" making things just a bit easier on the personal front. From the planning of the event, and note-taking, to communicating with vendors, and even sending event invitations, Permeet seems to have it all in one place for small personal event planners.

Has curiosity or necessity driven your event career success? That's the question that is being asked in this podcast episode and what we will dig into deeper.

When it comes to having curiosity, this soft skill can bring a lot of expansion in your life. It allows you to explore, figure things out, learn new things, and think outside of the box. When you don't have curiosity, you aren't as curious and when you aren't as curious, it leaves you stagnant, staying in the same situation, prevent you from learning and taking risks. The point is we should be more curious in our careers.

So curiosity is something that is a good trait for you to have, and it can really be useful when it comes to your event planning career. On the other hand, there is a little thing called necessity. We find that necessity can be a big driver within our careers too. It's important to know, however, that necessity is a word that's rooted in need, and if you move jobs based off of needs without adding in curiosity, it can definitely put you in a bind.

This episode explores curiosity versus necessity, how they interrelate, and how you can feel better about working with these two outlooks, for you to have a successful event career.

Event managers are in an industry that is built on supreme service. Due to our service standards, we aim to please our clients, customers, and attendees. Although serving and exceeding expectations of the people that we work with may seem like a good thing, it could actually have its opposite effect if we aren't checking ourselves appropriately.

This episode unpacks how to say no and thrive as an event manager. Saying no, as an event manager in an industry that is built on servicing the client can be definitely tough. There can be a lot of guilt, a lot of shame behind us, saying no. Yet, the truth is, saying no it can actually help the person that's requesting something of you. There are strategies to say no and a time and a place for you to be able to say no in which this episode walks through.

For instance, if you absolutely know that you can do a particular task, then saying no isn't the best option. Perhaps you want to lean on helping out your clients and customers you want to go the extra mile in support and help them if you do have the time, and the bandwidth, and the capability to do so.

However, if none of those areas, fit your situation. If you perhaps are out of time, energy, and bandwidth to be able to support any type of request. You might be the prime candidate for saying no as a strategy for self-care. This episode unpacks, three specific strategies, to say no, do it in a way that removes ambiguity, put the onus back on the requester, and even show you ways to say no, without even saying the word "no". I hope you enjoy this episode.

Many of the experiences that we have can be used for inspiration for event marketing. In this episode, I share a little bit of my holiday tradition and help share some insights from my experience and it can apply to events.

In marketing events, it's important that we focus on experience. Our attendees should be excited for our events, and have an enjoyable experience, along with an incentive to come back again for a great time.

A few of the areas that I cover in this episode that can enhance marketing are having a warm welcome, being consistent, and having a great sendoff. These are very simple but can make a powerful impact. Inspiration can come from anywhere and it doesn't have to be complex. Simple things that make us think differently and bring creative opportunities for our events.

Have you ever felt your brain drain after a long day? This can happen when you go through much stress and have to recall and lean on your short-term memory. In this episode, we will talk about brain drain and stress, and how it interacts together and can make it difficult for you to recall such things as remembering your keys in the car or remembering names, or faces.

We can overwork our brains often; it is how we use our brains throughout the day. Doing simple exercises can help you to decrease stress, but also stimulate your brain to recall things that you want much faster.

When we can recall more easily, we can combat stress better and help innovate and find different solutions for our clients, customers, and organizations.

In this episode, we unpack some insights on how to cope with life changes, so that you find yourself moving through them with more ease.

When you are coping with the changes that are going on in your life, it's important to create space for the journey. This means clearing out things in your life so that you are able to walk through a difficult time. That could mean removing some work off your plate, which comes down to putting less-priority tasks off to the side for a little while. Creating space for you to emotionally move through the changes that are going on will be helpful to you

Other areas that we discussed on this podcast episode is ensuring that you have someone to talk to. This means your family, friends, or someone you trust to talk to and hear you out, and listen to what you're struggling with. We also chat about the importance to go at your own pace. Everyone goes through life changes differently, and it is OK for you to go through it the way you can.

Finally, just know that there is a silver lining in the changes that you're going through. It can be hard to recognize it, but even if the silver lining is that you can get through it, that can be within itself comforting.

When so many in our industry, struggle with stress and overwhelm, it's important to know that it's not always the work that we are dealing with that causes the overwhelm it can just be purely that we're going through some type of additional change in our lives that makes us not be able to handle our capacities in the same way that we have done in the past. And it's okay.

If you want to have an amazing year, then you have to have a big vision for what is going to drive your success. This episode explores the big questions that you should ask yourselves in order for you to be able to have that perfect vision for your new year.

An area that can help you put your vision together easily is reflection. Reflection is the pathway to progress and understanding and reflecting on last year's success can help you to develop this year's vision.

This means you must look back in order for you to look ahead. Then you will be able to define your vision for the next year. The challenge is that if you continue to keep things status quo then you're not growing, you're not taking risk and you are staying stagnant. And the whole goal of creating a vision and having defined actions in place to meet your goals is for you to push yourself forward, always be learning, always be growing, always be expanding.

I hope that this podcast helps you to develop your vision quickly and start to think of the goals that are going to be creating that pathway for your success in the new year.

When it comes to navigating stress and being overwhelmed, it's important to get our hands up, stress down, and get the support that we need. It's ironic that if we have challenges in our health, we will call the doctor, and if we need our car fixed, we will call the maintenance technician. However, when it comes to our mental health, we can allow it to faster and sit without raising our hand or getting any kind of support.

This episode discusses the importance of getting the support that you need through your organization, through your leaders, through a coach, or through accountability partners. It also talks through some of the reasons why vulnerability is a superpower, and that it's not a weakness, and it can be used as a pathway to changing your environment, changing your situation. It can also be used for being creative about solutions that are going to be able to support you.

If you are experiencing stress and overwhelm, this episode will encourage you to raise your hand, seek support, work with someone to help you to make your situation better. And if you are someone that is a witness to others, that may be experiencing some challenges, help them to help themselves. Because the event industry needs more awareness and more support if we want to see long lasting change.

In the midst of the pandemic, Lauralee Whyte had a major revelation when it comes to her work. She wanted to be intentional about creating diversity and representation with her work. Feeling that there wasn't any representation, belonging, or connection in her industry, Lauralee set out on a quest to create the environment in the speaker industry that she wanted to see through her company Spectrum Speakers.

In this episode we chat about how the awareness of the necessity of diversity that surfaced in 2020 has long since fizzled out, replaced by a cookie-cutter embrace to get instant public satisfaction. However, the real intentional work that needs to be done in the event industry still has a way to go.

Lauralee suggests that while sustainability is a safe topic, with less controversy or less room or need to do or say the wrong thing - diversity and inclusion can be a heavy subject with a lot to tackle. Hence, the event industry tends to avoid the deeper conversations that can move the needle.

The big takeaway from our conversation is that there is still a lot of work to get done. And because many people walk on eggshells in an effort to not do or say anything wrong we unfortunately turn our backs on making real change.

Lauralee was a pleasure to have on the podcast and will give some tangible tips in this podcast for you to have awareness with action when it comes to diversity and inclusion.

In this episode, I sit down with Marsha Acker with Team Catapult. Marsha shares her leadership tips and expertise with me as we dig through some event industry challenges.

Episode Highlights:

  • It doesn't matter what strategies you have or the tools you buy. If you can't come together for a conversation and create change, then these things won't matter- it’s the relationship that we are able to build and the effective conversation that we have that makes the difference.
  • Leadership is the art of engaging with others in a way that helps us all be the best version of ourselves - Marsha Acker
  • Just because we lead differently, it doesn't mean that we can't be impactful in our own way.
  • It is important as leaders for us to be clear on how we behave, how we lead, and what is our model for leadership.
  • Do you make space in our companies to think and talk as a team? We are excellent at communication, but we may see things differently than others.
  • Marsha talks about the key thing she does with her team to encourage relationship-building and open communication.
  • Discussing your team's individual values and then collective values can be a useful tool for leaders of thriving teams.
  • Choosing not to maintain relationships in your business, can be detrimental for companies and teams.
  • In change management, we can resist change that is happening, or we can consider what we might create from it.
  • If you feel like you are efforting more than others, it may be time to do a self-check to see if you have to let go of the perspective that it has to be a specific way.

Do you struggle to maintain your work-life balance as an event professional? Do you feel like you are constantly overwhelmed? This May, for Mental Health Awareness Month, we are reading How to Keep House While Drowning. And, in this episode of the podcast, we will talk about tips to help you embrace more ease in your work and at home while planning those amazing events. Here are some takeaways from this episode:

Episode Highlights

  • The next book club selection is How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis. It's a great book for anyone struggling with overwhelm, burnout, and could use a little uplifting in a time of struggle.
  • What often happens in the homes of event planners are typically hidden and not often disclosed, but it is important that we are supportive of each others boundaries and the transitions that they might be having in their home lives as well.
  • What I've learned over the years when it comes to balancing all the things:
    • Focus on what is most important in the season you are in.
    • Create boundaries for anything that may be sneaking over the fence.
    • Say yes to the things that excite you - however, you'll have to ensure you have the space to manage them.
  • What people say "out loud" about a person or directly to you can be damaging. Event professionals should be mindful of judgements of others, especially if they are going through a tough time and are struggling with work tasks. Find ways to support if at all possible.
  • Many times we are overwhelmed by the amount of tasks we have to do at home and at work. Remind yourself that it's okay and you will get through it.
  • "You don't exist to serve your space, your space exists to serve you" - KC Davis. We need to change how our spaces work for us, instead of us working for them.
  • "Human beings can only exert high effort for short periods of time.' - KC Davis. This is a reminder that we need to balance our days with high and low periods so that we have time when we come home to support those that matter the most.
  • People struggle differently - privilege isn't the only difference. We all come from many different backgrounds, jobs, we also plan different events - so we all struggle differently. And if we are all struggling differently, we will resolve challenges differently as well.
  • How one measures work-life balance will vary for each person. The key is being aware of your needs and seeking out a supportive community to help you get to where you need to be.

  • Where your focus goes your energy flows, so make sure your mind is set on focusing on your task to completion.

  • If you are looking to ensure that you are being inclusive, take a look at your marketing, your forms, and adjust them so that they are representative of what your authentically represents.

Nora Sheils is a wealth of knowledge in the events industry and knows exactly what creating an impressive team can do for a business. Her talent for project management, operational efficiency, business expansion, and team dynamics support and propel event professionals to do their best. In this episode, Nora talks all about creating an impressive team and what that means for those that plan events.

Episode Highlights

  • In operating Bridal Bliss, Nora shared a takeaway that she never takes more weddings than she or her team are able to do comfortably.
  • Creating an impressive team can be stressful. Nora took time to train her employees at the beginning of her business and it grew from there.
  • The best training strategy for Nora to bring on new planners is having them start as assistants to shadow the process and then add on more responsibility as they grow.
  • What makes an amazing team player is possibly different for different companies. However, Nora's top three are:
    • Planners have to be open to all genders and all races
    • Planners should be open to learning new ways, and not set in their ways.
    • Ideal planners fit easily into the team culture.
  • It's common that planners will work with a client that isn't easy to work with. Ideally, if they aren't a good fit, it is much better to part ways with that client than move forward in a toxic environment.
  • There are ways to ensure a client is a good fit. A great one is asking the right questions during the inquiry and onboarding process.
  • Setting expectations early with your clients can ensure that planners are leading the process and are consultative.
  • Going above and beyond can lead to burnout. Be upfront about expectations and lead the process to ensure the client isn't asking you for status, and that you are showing them frequent updates.
  • Send a surprise and delight package as well to say welcome! They are inexpensive but make a huge difference.
  • Tips from Nora on building your company brand:
    • Jump into social media. It is an easy free way to build back the branding of your team and company
    • Planners get so much business from vendor referrals - send cards to your vendors so that you are at top of your mind.
    • Make sure to give reviews to others and keep your site updated when you get referrals and reviews from others as well. Show off the support you get from others
    • Be authentic.
  • Give your planners the space to grow as a planner, and make sure they are valued, and a true team player.

Leah Weinberg is a perfect blend of support for event professionals being an author, a recovering event planner, and an attorney. In this episode, we'll discuss the feelings and emotions that come with an event planner's job and how to walk through them.

Episode Highlights

  • When you can think through some of the big things that go wrong then you are prepared for the small things that come up.
  • Leah's book, The Wedding Rollercoaster, is all about keeping your relationship intact through the ups and downs.
  • What something seems to be like on the surface, isn't what it is always about. There is always something beneath the surface that underlines someone's behavior.
  • We should be proactive about bringing up any challenges in the planning process first.
  • Asking questions and having a conversation while planning builds trust with customers.
  • What people say as well as what people do not say can help you when identifying how to respond to your clients.
  • Your branding messaging and voice should portray the type of planner you are so that customers are aware of who you are as a planning professional.
  • Everyone is truly different and meant to be working with different people.
  • In situations that are high-touch many times, practice makes perfect. Practice how you respond to customers so that it becomes easier for you to respond to requests.
  • Sometimes we can be our own worst enemy by not having the right systems and processes in place. If you aren't strong in an area, find someone or a tool that is so that you can have a strong front.
  • Leah's 3-step process for handling the stress or emotional responses at an event. 1) Take the emotional response in nicely. 2) Think through it logically. 3) Check in with yourself emotionally to see how you are feeling.
  • Lastly, after moving through this process, we have to either take responsibility or let it go and move forward.
  • Don't isolate yourself when dealing with difficult customers. Have a team, community, or accountability partner to help you get yourself through trying times.

Today's interview feature is with special guest Mark Herschberg. Mark is the creator of the Career Toolkit: Essential Skills for Success that No One Taught You and the creator of the Brain Dump App.

Mark has also been recognized on many podcasts, and shows, and has received a plethora of awards for his Career Toolkit book. In this episode, we talk about communication and how if you use communication effectively, it can help boost your career and enhance your leadership.

Episode Highlights

  • Having the relevant experience for a position before you express interest, can help you to get the role you need.
  • There are many career transitions happening within event planning. Thus, it is important for companies to be transparent and intentional in hiring and have discussions beyond the requirements of the job.
  • If you're looking for some great questions to ask during the interview process, check out Mark's great resource from The Career Toolkit.
  • One mistake we often make when we are onboarding employees into new role is placing them into a box, and telling them to do the job. However, you want someone to understand the full picture of the company, and the larger context off their role.
  • Communication starts with clear guidelines on how to communicate and where resources are within a role.
  • Understand the root "why" of conversations so that you can communicate in a way that relates to their direct "why". When you drill down to the root, there might be different assumptions and goals.
  • The BrainBump App is an app that helps you better retain what you read and what you hear. Download and check out this app and see how it can help you in your professional life.
  • Leadership is changing, we have to be more intentional about our leadership, and be more communicative than before. We have to be more explicit with our leadership and intentional about getting feedback from our employees. More complex and more time-consuming as a leader these days.
  • Events are changing, there is nothing that is changed at an event today that is something that you can't pull up online and get it. So events, need to be more engaging and go beyond what you can get next door.
  • Networking and making meaningful connections is key and needs to be fostered at events.
  • Extending the in-person experience to online before and after an event, can help to leverage the online experiences.
  • Mark recommends the following professional development books: PeopleWare and The Charisma Myth

Jordan has also been recognized as the Most Innovative People in 2020 for his creative, holistic approach to virtual events. In this episode, we talk about how you can turn criticism to positivity as a planner as Jordan shares more about himself and helpful tips.

Episode Highlights

  • Jordan talks about how the pandemic affected his business and how he was able to merge two parts of his business to create a unique brand.
  • Listen to the voice of the customer to get insight into service offerings and how things may need to be repackaged or unique solutions that need to be provided to meet the customer's need.
  • Don't be afraid to ask and be vocal in your aspirations so that you can be supported in the goals and visions that you have for your business.
  • When it comes to communicating with clients, it is important to be honest and transparent so that they are aware of how industry changes (staffing, resources) are impacting their event.
  • We discuss the demands of the client in a world in which the event industry is ramping up.
  • Jordan shares that sometimes communicating with clients in tough times is about being human, letting them know what you are working through, and what you are doing in the background.
  • Jordan offered a great tip that we should go through and explain the work so that the client can see what you can do, and everything that you've done to complete their request.
  • Having weekly status meetings with your client to help keep them in the loop is beneficial so they aren't in the dark about the progress that is happening on their project.
  • When taking criticism from clients it is important to remove the emotion from the situation so that you can see the facts of the situation.
  • Criticism is often not you but it is because of the person giving the criticism is going through a situation that might need to be unpacked to find the real root of the feedback.
  • Know when it is healthy to remove toxic relationships between planner and client. Realizing this can save lots of time and wasted efforts in the future.
  • Done is better than perfect.

Today's interview feature is with special guest Deanna Nwosu. Deanna is a leader in the meeting and event industry as well as an event emcee, moderator, and speaker that believes that the power of memories is overlooked. We will talk a bit about the power of memories and how important they are, especially with the events that we plan.

Episode Highlights

  • Don't allow fear to prevent you from going after what you want.
  • You can't be your barrier to reaching the things you want to get.
  • There will be plenty of external barriers that get in your way, but don't let yourself get in your own way of doing the things you want.
  • Be okay with letting business go that isn't for you.
  • Embrace what's for you and don't be stressed about what's not.
  • The great reshuffling was a once and a lifetime moment to switch up how and in most cases where you work.
  • Gig work and contract work can be seen as an up-and-coming trend in the industry.
  • Diverse income streams are seemingly an aspiring trend too for many post-pandemic.
  • We have to do better with taking care of our physical bodies, our sleep, our eating, and our exercise.
  • You have to protect your boundaries and stand up for yourself. When you do this, you can reduce your stress.
  • Moments and planning events can be so powerful if we just take the time to pay attention.
  • Pay attention to the present moment when planning, and ask yourself a key question: What do we want our attendees to feel or know when they walk away from our event?

Have you ever struggled to meet the goals that you've set? In this episode, I will share six strategies that I've used to stay focused on my goals. Hopefully, these strategies will help you succeed in all that you are looking to accomplish for this year.

Episode HighlightsI've had opportunities in my lifetime to take on big projects, and lead teams, and although the journey seemed overwhelming at first, the strategies have always helped me to succeed.

Find your DriveI talked about the importance of finding what drives you so that you have the fuel that you need in order to accomplish your goals.

Seek Out AccountabilityAccountability is something I frequently discuss. It is very important for you to have a measure of accountability with someone in your life checking in and making sure that you are staying true to what you said out to do.

Write it OutIt's always helpful to write down your goals. I find that when I write things down it opens up additional opportunities to get detailed how my goals will be met.

Measure It with Deadlines/MilestonesTaking account of the deadlines and milestones that you will meet as you complete your goals is key to staying on point throughout the year.

Do Goal SprintsSometimes you can find quick and easy tasks to complete to give you a little bit of a Headstart towards your goal. I called these goal sprints. Identify where they are and go for it!

Midpoint checks (July/Aug)I'm sure you had many goals that you were tracking towards. Setting aside some time to reflect on how you've done and where are you still have yet to go is very helpful for you to do in the middle of the year. Set some time in your calendar to do a midpoint check.

There are many shifts that are happening as we are phasing into another era of the pandemic. We have lost team members, gained others, and face the challenge of building amazing teams we had once before.

  • We are currently planning events differently, there isn’t an event that is absolutely similar to what it was pre-pandemic.
  • Listening to your team and being attentive to their personal needs is very crucial at a time where people are sensitive to global events.
  • When you are learning and taking risks at the same time, so encouraging vulnerability can allow teams to make mistakes gracefully.
  • The difference between a successful team and a team that isn’t as successful is that they use crisis as a way to crystalize their purpose.

    • Never lead a meeting alone.
    • Good looks.
    • Air traffic control.
    • Get productive with virtual tools.
    • End your meeting on a high note.

    • Attendees need to feel safe, take risks, and be vulnerable towards each other.
    • Get things done on time and meet a high level of excellence.
    • Attendees have clear roles, plans, and goals.

Have you ever been busy working, but not necessarily being productive? In this episode, I'll share with you three ways to be productive rather than spending your time being busy for the sake of being busy.

Episode Highlights:

  • Being busy is all about being occupied, but with what? You can be busy doing many things but are you moving the needle forward.
  • Being productive means that you are producing an effective result for you and your business.
  • Stop doing all the busy things in your life. One of the main productivity killers is social media. Make sure to give yourself time limits on social media so that your time can be better spent in other places.
  • Make sure that you are scheduling smart when it comes to your calendar. Remember there is a time and place for everything.
  • Focus on a specific task instead of having your hands in too many things at one time. Focusing is more effective than multi-tasking.
  • Always stick to your script. If you have a planner or have time allotted or certain tasks, make sure that you stick to your plans. Don't falter.

This week’s episode we are digging deeper into Opposition Factors that affect us and may prevent us from reaching our goals. In episode 43 we discussed the common internal oppositions that appear for us, and this week, we are discussing several external oppositions.

Episode Highlights

  • Seeking the validation from others can help in some cases, however if validation isn’t favorable, it is important to know how to respond.
  • Use any validation responses whether positive or negative to refine and to reshape your goal.
  • When you get your first critic, it could be an opportunity to get deeper into refining or validating your goal or idea.
  • Think of criticism as a dialogue and use it as fuel to get to where you need to go.
  • Accountability partners are there to help keep us on our path. Although when we are being held accountable we may not see it that way.
  • While on this journey to meet your goals, make sure that you use your accountability team to support you.
  • See accountability as an opportunity to be vulnerable in where you are at, and allow your partners or coach guide you through.

Opposition is what happens when you start to move to completing your goals. This week's podcast discusses three common areas of opposition and what you can do to overcome them.

Have you created a life plan yet? Well, creating a plan for where you want to go, only helps you as you journey to your destination. Consider listening to Episode 41 How to Create a Life Plan to Meet Your Goals to get started.

Episode Highlights

  • Almost always when we set out to create our goals, opposition will be a factor.
  • The key is becoming aware of the areas of opposition so that you can easily move through it.
  • Imposter syndrome is a common opposition that everyone suffers from.
  • Imposter syndrome is when you feel you aren't worthy or enough to do this new thing you are looking to do.
  • If you are dealing with imposter syndrome, the key thing is now you can create a new story for yourself instead of believing one that is made up.
  • Comparing is another common opposition that most suffer from.
  • Comparing is like imposter syndrome in that you look externally and use your perception against progress.
  • The key with comparing to not let it get you into shame, but rather use your quest to gather inspiration from external examples, as inspiration only.
  • The last common example is deflecting. This occurs when others share something positive about what they see about your change, but you humbly push their comments away.
  • Deflecting can be conquered by a simple thank you. Let the positivity flow if you are making great traction on your goals.
  • Finally be cautious of burnout when you are ramping up something new. There are ways to get traction in a healthy way versus it hurting you.
  • If you feel you are in a burnout situation, consider registering for my free mini-course on preventing burnout created just for you.

Today we welcome Gillian Behnke, creator of Mom Camp Life to the podcast. Her and I have a wonderful conversation about being a mom, having the juggle all of the things. As a busy mom of two, Gillian cares deeply about helping other moms feel better both mentally and physically. She believes that motherhood does not equal with exhaustion, and that is possible to thrive mentally, emotionally, physically and professionally.

Episode Highlights

  • High performing moms hate to say no. However it is best to be comfortable with saving no and understand what to say yes to and what you cannot.
  • If you want something done, you as an event planner end up knowing how to figure it out. However, If it is something that you absolutely don't have to do, you absolutely can say no.
  • Resilience comes from taking care of your own health, both physical and mental. If you are more resilient you'll have more strength for the tough moments that do come up.
  • Sometimes you just take the next best step in order to keep moving forward.
  • If you are overwhelmed, don't fear or panic.
  • Do as much as you can, when you can.
  • As a leader, Gillian shares that she encourages everyone to be authentic leader.
  • Gillian encourages event planners to make recommendations on a solution, versus questioning the problem. Practicing the muscle of problem solving really develops you in a more useful way as leader.
  • Quote of the day: If it isn't a hell yes, then it is a hell no.
  • Gillian's words of advice to event planners: Be kind to yourself. Prioritize your Health. Especially now where we are seeing all these changes, your mental and physical health are number one.

In this episode of the Planners on Purpose podcast, I speak with Jillian Lama certified life and fitness coach, and the creator of The Body You Crave Method. Jillian was able to bring forth some tangible tips on how event planners can manage their physical, and mental health.

Episode Highlights

  • Give yourself compassion and grace and recognize that your brain can create unhealthy habits, but you have the power to change them.
  • When overwhelmed, try Jillian's Think, Feel, Act method 1) Think about the situation 2) Assess what your feelings are 3) Act appropriately.
  • There are many things that we can't control, but we can only think about the things that we can control
  • To combat stress, you should recognize where the stress is really coming from in your life.
  • It not about things needing to be perfect, but how can I setup my exception on something is always going to go wrong and be ready to adapt when things go wrong.
  • Our thoughts are ultimately the silent killer of our health. Get your thoughts right, to get your health right.
  • People make mistakes, it's all about how we can work through them and troubleshoot them when they come up is what matters.
  • To manage overwhelm, come into the awareness that change is inevitable.
  • To build healthy habits, make small steps to get the best success.
  • Recognize what works best for your body and ensure to put yourself first by making sure your cup is filled first.
  • When burnout happens, it's okay and perhaps time to take a step backward and refill your cup.
  • Start looking for all of the ways that you are shaming yourself and shift into neutral or something positive
  • You are going to serve others the best when you feel that you are at your best.

In this episode of the podcast, I was able to sit down and have a talk with journaling expert, Mai Oliphant from Shape Mai Life. Mai helps people to use journaling to heal and flourish. We live in uncertain times, and aren't sure of how the end of the year will turn out, much less how 2021 will run. Many event planners have lost jobs, or are working feverishly to protect theirs. Journaling and the unique way that Mai delivers her story can give us a tool to get through some of these tough times.Episode highlights Sometimes we wait until when everything is bottled up to journal, but being consistent and making it a habit, makes it more effective. You do not need to be a writer in order to journal. Journaling is your conversation with yourself, and has nothing to do with your writing skills. It has everything to do with you being open and honest with yourself. You can do journaling anywhere, take a quick note on your phone if you need to. Journal prompts can help prompt your thoughts and is an easy way to start journaling. Make the habit of journaling attractive by having a nice journal to write in. Schedule your journaling around something that you already have a habit of doing to ensure you can start. Journal what you will say "yes" or "no" to in order to confirm clear boundaries. Idea: Make an intention list on what you will or won't accept when dealing with situations or clients. It isn't too late to start journaling. In this episode we discuss how to use Atomic Habits to achieve your goals. Recently in our book club, we discussed the book Atomic Habits by James Clear. It was an immensely transformational read that helped us understand not only what habits are, but how to craft good habits, and dismantle old ones. Enjoy the listen.Episode Highlights A habit is a routine or behavior that is performed frequently. Each habit can be broken down into four components: Cue, Craving, Response, and Reward Four laws of behavior change can help your form good habits, those laws are: Make It obvious, Make it attractive, Make it easy, and Make it satisfying In order to break a bad habit, here are the four elements: Make it invisible, Make it Unattractive, Make it difficult, Make it unsatisfying If you really want to form a good habit in a very easy way, downscale your desirable habit into 2 minutes or less Habit stacking can be pretty beneficial when you want to really make a big impact with all of those good habits that you are creating.Links & ResourcesPlanners on Purpose Book ClubAtomic Habits Thank you for listening!I would love to hear how you are using Atomic Habits to reach your goals. In this episode, I talk with Amy Branger. Amy is an executive coach and management consultant and has had many positions including working with Presidents and Governors. This episode we discuss leadership and well being and the challenges that both of those affect women, specifically those in midlife. I encourage you to listen and let me know what you think of our discussion by clicking the voice message button or link below.Episode Highlights When managing up you have to anticipate what that person is afraid of, and help them feel better about it. This will help you with credibility and relationship in the long run. Amy's four step process on change management: Acceptance - Accept what has happened to you. Empowerment - Come up with a new story that is more empowering. Learn the Lessons - Find the lessons from what has happened. Explore - Take the opportunity to explore the other endings you can write, think of the new opportunities that are available. Individuals and organizations can take advantage of this four step process. When in doubt, go back to this process to help empower yourself within your struggle with change. There is always a story that has been running your life. You have to find out what that story is and why you believe it to be true. Work smarter and work within your strengths and not your weaknesses. If you are a manager, consider hiring people to do things that you cannot do, but ensure to let them do it. When working with any high level client, it is important to ensure everyone has a role, and trust them to do just that. As a leader, you need to model work-life balance for your employees and hold them to it as well. In this episode, we will be digging deeper into the concept of perfectionism. If you struggle with being perfect all the time, or have suffered from being held under the microscope of perfect, then this episode is for you. Episode Highlights"It is the belief that when we do things perfectly, and look perfect we can minimize and avoid the pain of blame, judgement, and shame. Perfectionism is a 20 ton shield that we lug around thinking it will protect us, when in fact it's the thing that prevents us from being seen." - Brené Brown, Daring Greatly Perfectionism is about perception, and there is no way that you can control perception no matter how much energy you put into it. Do you struggle with being perfect? So much so that you failed to make progress? Perfectionism can be very destructive if we let it, so this episode is just what you need to get it in check.

Tips to Manage Your Perfectionism

  • Planning the perfect experience includes allowing for imperfections along the way.
  • Perfectionism is like a dirty word wrapped up in a beautiful package. Because no one is truly perfect.
  • If you aren't careful, perfectionism can hurt you, it can destroy your events, and even harm your life and relationships.
  • Although recognition is important, opt to plan events from a service mindset instead of choosing to gain specific praise.
  • Each time you plan your events or projects, make sure to do it as yourself, and not in the image of what you may think others want you to be.
  • Be careful to not allow fear from yourself or anyone else to be placed on you. It is okay to not be perfect, to gain experience, learn and grow.
