In this episode of Can't Find My Way Home, I was joined by Ben Osborne.
It had maybe been about a year or so since we originally talked about doing an episode together, but it was definitely worth the wait.
Ben talks us through his early days as a musician in Oxford, and how after moving to university, his musical expectations were about to change. For the better...
We also get into the move to Berlin (back when it was a lot cheaper to do so), as well as his work with Open Music Lab, where he is the Project Manager & Workshop Organizer, as well as the Co-Founder. From their website -
"The Open Music Lab is a space where anyone can learn how to create, record, and share. All of our workshops and courses are free of charge for the students and offer a place for Berlin’s diverse communities to connect and create together."
We chat about Ben's back catalogue, his own very distinctive musical style, performing live after a long break, his work on theatre and film soundtracks, and his work as a libretti...writing lyrics for opera.
There's a new piece he's written, which will see him go to Japan in the New Year, the joy of writing lyrics, anarchic pantomimes, and why we should be listening to Kate Bush...and The Pixies...
I really enjoyed our conversation and I'm sure that you will too...
Craig

Big thanks to @viomusic.art for sharing his Top 5. Some guilty pleasures, a particularly unique live venue, his go to Karaoke song...and more.
Viktor Haraszti is a Hungarian-born, Holland-based musician, sax player-multiinstrumentalist, producer, and sound engineer. Hitting his first notes behind the piano as a seven-year-old, he later picked up the clarinet at age 11. Seven years later, he got his first diploma at the famous Bela Bartok Conservatory in Budapest. Influenced by a visit to Fats Domino's Budapest concert in the late '80s, the Rock & Roll set off his passion and inspired him to pick up the saxophone right after graduation. Learning the traditions of Rhythm & Blues and playing with different local bands helped him to develop his interest in jazz. Discovering Parker, Miles, and Coltrane's works while he was working at the music library made him set his direction in music

We get into the finer aspects of Robert’s expat journey and how it’s taken him first to Austria and now on to Barcelona where he’s called home for six years.
Robert and I discuss his family roots in the music business. What’s it like being a drummer who writes music for the band? How he got into jazz in the first place, his musical influences, the modern economic model for musicians today, how the perception of music has changed,as well as apocryphal tales of Frank Zappa.
We get a bit grammatical - pre and post covid plans, and Robert tells us how working as an investment broker in New York enabled him to pursue his career in music.
In the Top 5, we have Iggy Pop, singing drummers…and the complexities there of, Medeski Martin & Wood, not being fans of Ginger Baker or Keith Moon (in a manner of speaking), and late night Karaoke in NYC, and why all roads lead to Miles Davis…

We get into musical inspirations, playing in house bands and expanding your musical vocabulary, as well as Adrian’s main project in Valencia - the band AY Trick, and how to grow a following organically.
We wax lyrical about our shared appreciation of Charles Bradley, social media marketing, and making that move as an Expat.
In the Top 5, we feature Kanye, Reggaeton, playing gigs in football stadiums and on the big stage at festivals, Hotel California, the music of Tarrus Riley, and a super selection from Adrian’s own ‘New to Me’ playlist…
All this and what songs would you sing on The Voice…

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by Gary Hurlstone
Gary shares with us his musical journey. From first picking up the acoustic guitar after hearing Bert Jansch’s ‘Anji’, to joining local bands and the numerous styles and genres of music that he’s played over the years.
Gary takes us through the recording process for both of his recent solo albums, the locations, the musicians, and of course, during these covid times - some unique circumstances.
There’s talk of touring throughout China, the Chinese Glastonbury, staying in Yurts, the transient nature of being an Expat musician and being in a band, playing on the most unusual of stages, and the appetite for Western music in the country at that time.
In the Top5, we blether on about getting lost in music, armies of songwriters, playing at the WOMAD Festival and for the British Council, and the joy of Snarky Puppy.
All this and just how many musicians can you fit into a Tiny Desk performance...Let’s get right to it...Gary Hurlstone

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by Chris Davis.
Chris and I both hail from the same hometown in Scotland, (Cumbernauld - the only Scottish town to be labelled “Scotland’s most dismal town” twice.), so we name check a few cultural references in the episode.
Chris went to university in Aberdeen, graduated, and then headed for Berlin in 2008.
Chris tells us about his early days in Berlin, working in bars, and getting into the improv comedy scene in the city. After two years in the improv scene, Chris decided to spread his wings and to go it alone in stand-up comedy, and has been a regular on the scene for the last ten years.
We also find out about ‘The Wandering Barman’ persona, the immersive and interactive nature of the act, and where it’s heading next.
Alongside Chris’s comedy journey, he’s also been serving cocktails in numerous high-end establishments, Michelin Star restaurants, as well as on stage. We blether on about alcohol-free gin, pretentious ingredients, Chris’s own podcast - Lifting Yer Spirits, his new one hour show aptly named ‘The Death of a Barman’, and we both share our experiences of playing to disinterested audiences.
In the Top 5, we talk Coldplay, Foreigner, The Barrowlands in Glasgow, first gigs, The Smiths, Aldous Harding and Adam Curtis.

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I caught up with songwriter, musician, and producer...Erik Alcock from his studio in Berlin.
Erik, originally from Toronto, Canada, has been residing in Berlin since 2019, and is flourishing in his new surroundings.
Erik talks us through what brought him to Berlin, as well as how his musical roots were sown back in Canada as a 17 year-old, first starting out in the music industry.
There’s tales of auditioning for the President of EMI Publishing, understanding how important collaboration is as a musician, pitching songs for Eminem’s ‘Recovery’ album, (and then hearing them on the radio), and the romanticized narrative of the music industry vs the reality of the business.
We get into musical influences, his new project with Craig Walker (Archive/Power of Dreams) Craig Walker and The Cold, as well as some of the other musical ventures he has on the go. In the Top 5, there’s Pat Benatar, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, the pros and cons of crediting songwriters, we ponder what the Arctic Monkeys and Dolly Parton would sound like if they worked together...and why losing a pint of blood at an audition wasn’t as bad as it sounds...

In this episode of Can't Find My Way Home, I was joined by Joey Ryan.
Originally from Wexford, Ireland and has been living in Berlin since 2016
Joey takes through his musical journey, from first picking up the guitar at age 7 (he’s now 29), his wide array of musical influences, the early band days at high school, and the transition to solo performer/singer-songwriter.
After releasing a couple of albums and the subsequent move to Germany, Joey felt like he’d lost something in the music he was making and wanted to branch out creatively. His new sound was based on the influences and the music that he was listening to at that time and ORIAN was born.
We get into the recording process for the EP (Before it Weighs Us Down), collaborations, the crisp and cinematic sound that Joey was looking for (I think he found it), live drums versus programmed drums, and why Joey’s happier to explore the more softer, indie side of things, and why he prefers performing with the electric and not the acoustic guitar primarily.
There’s talk of getting back on stage this year, performing on RadioEins, touring in Germany, as well as some of the similarities and differences to playing in Ireland and Germany.
In the Top 5, there’s Billie Eilish and the power of social media, Phoebe Bridgers, smashing guitars, not getting Neil Young (but in a good way), Bon Jovi, Backstreet Boys, the Tempodrom in Berlin, and why you won’t find a capo in his guitar case…

With three top 20 chart hits in Ireland under his belt, he travelled to the US playing close to 300 shows in over 40 states, taking in legendary venues such as the Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood and the Boulder Theatre, as well as the South By Southwest Festival.
In April, 2021 he released his debut solo album - "Plasticine Heart” recorded on a ship in Berlin’s Treptower Park, to great reviews.

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, we take a look at one of the live music landmarks in Seoul, South Korea - Woodstock, Itaewon.
This year marks the 4 year anniversary since I left South Korea after 17 years. Quite a stretch, you could say. The last gig I played, just a couple of days before heading back to Scotland, was at Woodstock, in Itaewon with my band - Sticky Fingers. True to form, Tom, Mike, Jeff, Josh and I started at 11pm and played on into the wee hours. A bunch of friends swung by and watched the show, then we drank some more, long into the night. It was a great, memorable way to leave the country I’d called home for so long. Loud music, friends, beer, grreat banter, late nights, then the long walk home with my cymbal bag, snare drum, and backpack full of sweaty tshirts, towels and a myriad of other things that only drummers would appreciate.
I’d played at Woodstock countless times over the years and forever cursed the increasing layer upon layer of duct tape on those (once fantastic sounding) drums...but that was part of the deal. Bandmates and I would often stay late after shows, air-drum to GnR or Van Halen, drinking brandy shots with Mr Woo. You’d get into conversation with all sorts of people, from all over the world, talking about music, drums, or why Alex Van Halen’s such an underrated drummer. There was always something going down.
Anyway, I digress…
Sadly Mr Woo passed away in April 2019 and more recently, the building has also been torn down. Itaewon and the music scene in Seoul, is a lesser place for it.
This episode is a collection of clips, interviews and written contributions from numerous friends and fellow musicians who had also played at Woodstock over the years.

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by Haider Jafri.
Haider shares some of his expat stories from his 6 years of living in Prague, as well as comparing and contrasting those to growing up in Dubai.
Haider left Dubai at 17 to go to Med School in Prague and is now only a couple of months from graduating. You’ll hear him talking about the considerable differences between living in Dubai and Prague - the weather, the buildings and of course, the arts scene.
Having started playing music in his teens, Haider explains what got him into it in the first place, what his influences were and the challenges of finding your own voice when covering other people’s songs.
Since moving to Prague, Haider’s not only dealt with studying medicine, and of course, the pandemic situation, but he’s also tried to maintain the creative process through his music.
We talk about the complexities in managing your time and the realization that one slip up, because of playing music, could see you kicked out of medical school.
We get into the creative process, the advantage of having short names for songs, Haider’s recording plans and the art of great lyrics...One Direction, The Cocteau Twins, and Tom Misch feature in a funTop 5...

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home I was joined by Mark Mulholland.
Mark, like myself, is originally from Glasgow, and has lived in France, Ireland, Germany, Haiti, Mali, and now calls Paris home.
Mark takes us through busking his way around Europe in the late 80’s and early 90’s, where he discovered that if you could generate enough money to eat and a bottle of wine by singing songs, then there were plenty of good times to be had on the road.
After several years of being permanently transient, and of no real fixed abode, Mark settled in Berlin. In fact, what started out as a 3 week trip to play some shows and catch up with friends, turned into a 14 year stay. There’s also the second hand bookshop that he ran for 10 years or so in the city…
He recalls how meeting his now wife, led to them relocating to Haiti and then to Mali, where they lived for several years. While living in Haiti, Mark recorded albums with the legendary artist, Franketienne, and in Mali with Toumani Diabaté. He also created the Festival Acoustik Bamako, where artists such as Damon Albarn and Oxmo Puccino performed.
There’s talk of his own band ‘Two Dollar Bash’, how technology has helped with the production process for musicians, recording albums in Bamako and in the West of Scotland for the Alba Griot Ensemble project.
We talk about the joys of the Scottish weather (of course), producing for the Glitterbeat record label, Mark’s forthcoming solo project and why Salvador Dali was right about Perpignon train station being the centre of the universe.

Ryan describes the project as fitting broadly into the genres of electronica and melodic house music, and there’s a multitude of elements and influences that can be heard in the band’s sound. We also touch on Intentional Events in Christchurch and what other collaboartive events are happening in the local arts scene.
Ryan’s also a podcaster and The Good Timeline is where he attempts to examine Transhumanism through every possible lens. He’s spoken to Harvard professors, scientists, musicians and artists about their respective fields, life, and humanity.
We discuss ‘the meme space’, as well as some of the guests and subjects that’ll be in forthcoming episodes. Highly recommended listening!
Our Top 5 features Robbie Williams, Noah Gundersen, The Staves, John Farnham, the Funkhaus in Berlin, and not getting Kanye or Beck…
All this and sneaking into abandoned reservoirs in the name of rock’n’roll…

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by Nick Barone.
Nick, originally from New York, has been a long-time resident in South Korea.
Together, we discussed some of the opportunities that lie outside of ‘teaching english’ for expats, as well as one or two of the examples that we’ve experienced personally.
We kick-off the conversation with how Nick first started getting modelling gigs and how it all works from an expat perspective.
Of course, we get into some of the pros and cons of the business, the viability of doing it full-time, and the role of social media and influencers.
There’s talk of networking, utilizing language skills, and what opportunities are in film, advertising, TV and radio.
In a Super Top 5, We get into ZZ Top riffs, a Desert Island Album...or two, and ask the tricky question - are the Beatles overrated? As well as Nirvana, Pantera,The Jungle Giants, Culture Vulturing...and still listening to Gangnam Style.

This week’s Can’t Find My Way Home features Part 2 of my interview with James Harries. James, originally from Manchester, has called Prague home for 20-plus years. He has recorded and performed all over Europe and North America. As well as several film scores to his credit, James has also had his music featured in US, Polish, Spanish, Danish and Czech film and TV productions.
James had just released his latest album ‘Superstition’ just before the lockdown started in early 2020 and he details the ups and downs of releasing and promoting a new album in such unique circumstances.
We talk about being in the right place at the right time when it comes to opportunities, writing for soundtracks, and the uncanny knack of being able to write a hit during a lunch break. Turns out it’s harder than some people might think…
In an excellent Top 5, there’s Harry Styles, Elvis and Keith Richards, new music from Noga Erez and Arlo Parks...as well as the Slovakian singer - Katarzia. All this and drinking tea at the Roxy in Los Angeles…’

In this first of a two-part episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by singer-songwriter James Harries.
James, originally from Manchester, has called Prague home for 20-plus years. He has recorded and performed all over Europe and North America. As well as several film scores to his credit, James has also had his music featured in US, Polish, Spanish, Danish and Czech film and tv productions.
He has had three # 1 singles on the Europa2 music charts. Had radio play on BBC Radio2, BBC6 Radio, KCRW in the US as well as national and regional TV & radio stations across Europe.
A natural improviser, no two shows are ever the same but they are always raw, charismatic, intense, relaxed and often very amusing.” (Heaven magazine)
“….Like Ryan Adams on steroids.” (Time Out London)
“ a natural born minstrel” (Uncut magazine)
“Raw, primal, exquisite” (Observer Music Monthly)
“One of the best singer-songwriters in Europe” (Uni Culture Magazine)
James explains how his relationship with the Czech Republic started, first as a 16 year-old in a school orchestra and then returning every year after, until his early twenties when he made the move permanent. We also talk about how he’s managed to get a grasp of the language and why really wanting to speak it has made all the difference. although, you could say he had more of an unconventional training in it.
James had just released his latest album ‘Superstition’ just before the lockdown started in early 2020. James details the ups and downs of releasing and promoting a new album in such unique circumstances.
There’s talk of working with a writing partner for the first time, doing voiceovers for computer games, and being offered strange jobs during the lockdown.
We chat about cover versions being featured on Spanish TV shows, his musical influences (of which there are many), playing in folk clubs, as a busker, and the complexities and intricacies of performing solo and with a band.
We try to gauge what this year will be like for musicians and audiences alike and when we can get back to “normal”? Speaking of which, James also recalls the story behind his 2017 album ‘Live in Bratislava’...with quite a few tangents along the way.
All this and singing to sheep…

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by Nick Sanders.
Nick is now based in Birmingham, England, but has previously spent several years studying, living, and working in South Korea and Japan.
We also take a look at his Youtube channel - Yeongki Nick - and of course, The Top 5.
Nick takes us through his experience of living in South Korea, both as a student, and then his time working in the countryside and then moving to the capital to teach adults.
We also share some of our own initial thoughts and impressions of the South Korea and wonder - what is that smell?
The two of us try hard not to compare South Korea and Japan, and instead, Nick lifts the lid on some of the cultural differences in the workplace, as well as giving us quite a few travel tips.
Nick’s new project, the Youtube channel - Yeongki Nick - is where you can find his informative, educational, insightful and of course, entertaining take on learning the Korean language. There’s talk of bringing your own personality to this type of project, how he comes up with ideas for new episodes, and of course what kind of things we can expect to see when all this Covid stuff’s behind us.
We talk social media, getting drunk with Australians in the most unlikely of places, confucian football fans, not choosing to study physics...and going... full cheese!

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by Alex Montyro and Caolan O'Neill-Forde. Together, they are Bookie Baker.
Bookie Baker’s creative and musical journey, punctuated by an arrest and interrogation in China, is just part of the alt-folk duo’s story. Their journey from the beginning has been fuelled by a sense of adventure, entrepreneurial spirit and wanderlust.
Since their rather hurried exit from China, the duo have been living and working in Prague, and it’s from there where they’ve really been able to flourish creatively.
The lads tell us about their diverse and sometimes surreal experiences of playing to crowds in China. The different locations, the quirky guys who run the sound, and why it’s important to at least look the part.
We also get into how difficult it is to set up in a new city...well, a new continent from scratch. As well as extolling the virtues of Prague as a creative hub, Alex and Caolan describe how they dealt with the first lockdown and have utilized their film-making background into the band. You have to check out their videos!
There’s talk of Westerns, sticking to a budget, 5000 piece jigsaw puzzles, Eleanor Rigby and just where the band name originates from.
The duo also tell us about new songs that are in the pipeline and the conundrum of how to release them. Are albums really what people want any more?
The Top 5 features Justin Beiber, Dua Lipa, Sangwich Sessions, Alex’s Dad, Steve and a host of local talent that we should be listening to.
All this and singing barbershop quartets in the most unlikely of places!

Ant, a New Zealander, has been living in Cologne, Germany for the past two and a half years...where he’s been working on his music full-time.
Of course, we talk about how he ended up in Germany, his travelling and backpacking adventures with his German girlfriend, adopting a street dog in Mexico, and giving up a career in marketing to try his luck as a professional musician.
Ant details how he first got into music from an early age, performing in musical theatre at high school, and to him eventually picking up the acoustic guitar to accompany the songs he’d written.
Ant describes how important marketing and self-promotion is to an artist.
“We Work” spaces where creatives can collaborate, the busking scene, getting out of your comfort zone, Ant’s own music and his hopes for the year ahead.

In this last interview of 2020, I spoke with guitarist and songwriter, Justin Lavash.
Calling from his home in Teplice, in the Czech Republic, Justin recounts his expat and musical adventures in his adopted home via London, Liverpool and beyond.
Justin’s relationship with the Czech Republic stretches back to his first visit in 1991, and eventually saw him moving to Prague in 2004, and now on to Teplice.
During his time in the Czech Republic, Justin has established himself as a must-see act on the local music scene and abroad. His music crosses borders - somewhere between blues, folk and jazz. His phenomenal guitar playing has left many audiences wondering how so much polyphony can be made by one man on one instrument. Lavash identifies himself as a fingerstyle guitarist, following in the footsteps of British folk guitar gurus like Richard Thompson or John Martyn, but he is of a younger generation and traces of New Wave and even dance culture can be found in his music. Prior to living in the Czech Republic, Lavash worked as a guitarist in south London's jazz scene in the 90s and later in the cabaret scene, both as a guitarist and a transcriber.
Justin and I get into his sound and how the introduction of technology has not only filled it out, but it’s also taken it to the next level. That said, Justin still considers himself a folk guitarist at heart. There’s talk about the changes that he’s seen in Czech music scene, differences in audiences over the years, working with local musicians on various projects and what new material he’ s been working on. As well as the varying musical influences that Justin taps into.
In the Top 5, we ponder what Andrew Gold, Dave Grohl, and Justin all have in common, the ‘Once’ soundtrack, the underground Czech music scene - pre-Velvet Revolution & Charter 77. We’ve got Bill Withers on Karaoke, alongside Danny Boy disasters, and the Akropolis in Prague. All this plus wanting to start a nine-piece R’n’B band and why we love seeing performers who play right on the edge!

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by Peter Martin, the brains behind the Ninja News Japan podcast.
Born in Ireland, raised in Canada, and having lived in Japan more than anywhere else up to this point, Peter has a wealth of experience, both as an expat and as a podcaster.
During our conversation we get into Peter's expat journey, competing in Judo all over the world (and until he turned 40), how do humans function in extreme heat and humidity, and why 'moist' is the most hated word in the English language.
Peter actually runs several podcasts, the biggest of which is Ninja News Japan. I really enjoy Peter's monologue's, his delivery, and that slightly sideways look at news stories in his adopted home. Peter's concept is to find stories from Japan that are relevant and culturally interesting to anyone living in Japan - and those who aren't.
We chat about the attention span of readers and listeners, how we consume our media, and are we the victims of a changing world? And the 'other' meaning of 'Christmas Cake'. You might be surprised!
In the Top 5, there's the joyful nature of Panjabi MC, House of Pain, Karaoke buildings, The Reply All Show podcast, and visiting S and M Bondage shows in Nagoya.

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by Anthony Garcia.
Anthony, calling from his home in Austin, Texas, was kind enough to share some stories about his expat adventures, and of course, his music.
“Originally from Lubbock, Texas, Garcia draws inspiration for the mood and cinematic feel of his music from a hometown rich in music history. His travels throughout the world have exposed him to a variety of cultures and music that have contributed to his expansive repertoire and knowledge of musical styles.” (https://www.anthonygarciamusic.com)
We discuss how meeting and befriending a German exchange student in high school, helped pique Anthony’s interest in the language and culture of the country. This also led to his first European back-packing trip in the mid-90’s and eventually to him studying abroad for a year in the town of Giessen.
After several years back in Texas, teaching music at a local college and playing the bars and clubs at night, Anthony felt like he was losing his focus of being creative and was using music to make money.
Next step, and an attempt to recharge his batteries, was a stint teaching in Busan, South Korea. Instead of taking a step back from the music scene, Anthony found himself at the forefront of Busan’s vibrant music scene. We get into some of the finer details.
Anthony also talks us through the music scene in Austin, post-Covid. As well as an overview of his latest, critically-acclaimed album, Acres of Diamonds.
We get into cinematic soundscapes, musical influences, the best venues in New Mexico, the exuberance of the Expat audience and more in his Top 5!
All this and why Germany has the best breakfasts!

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by Adam Fields.
Adam is in the somewhat unique position of having lived outside of England, longer than he’s actually lived there. 25 years and counting. Adam has also been a professional stand-up comedian for just as long. He guides us through, both his expat journey, and his unorthodox route into stand-up.
Adam has performed in over 40 countries, from Curacao to Borneo, to living room festivals in South Africa and details some of the more memorable shows. Closer to home, Adam explains why the Dutch have a reputation for being a tough crowd - tougher than the Germans. We also get an insight into the Dutch sense of humour and what makes them laugh.
We look at how the ‘lockdown’ (the first one) affected performers in Amsterdam, and how they gradually got audiences back into clubs again. And then Lockdown ‘light’ hit us near the end of the year. As well as how to make a living in the business and the challenge of turning around the atmosphere of a room.
There’s chat about learning from a Hall of Fame Clown (Arthur Peddlar), what comedians make him laugh, and the exotic charms of ‘Chat Roulette’. All this and black and white TV’s, an audience with Billy Connolly, and having a split personality!

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by guitarist, songwriter and producer Geoff Tyson.
A California native, Geoff has called Prague home since 2007. He talks us through both his expat and musical journey and has quite the story to tell. Touring the world as a professional musician, seeing all the changes in the music business over the years, both the good and the bad.
From Geoff’s excellent website...
Geoff started his musical journey at the age of 3, when he started classical piano training. He played until his early teens until he heard Eddie Van Halen and he knew that guitar was his calling.
At 13 years old, Geoff started studying guitar with Joe Satriani, and refined his skills jamming with high school mates Alex Skolnick, Charlie Hunter, Jude Gold, and Joshua Redmond. Geoff is one of two students Satriani has said 'Graduated' from his lessons (the other being Steve Vai. During one of his last lessons, Joe gave him a cassette of his then unreleased album “Surfing With The Alien” and Geoff knew Joe wouldn’t be teaching much longer.
Geoff tells us how he got into music and his lessons with Satriani, his wide and varied musical influences, and eventually stepping into the world of production and engineering.
Geoff, used the first lockdown time earlier this year to good use when he recorded his first guitar instrumental album - Drinks With Infinity - which was released back in July.
Geoff also outlines why it was a really rewarding and interesting process, moving away from vocal music to guitar music.
We get into the music and arts scene in Prague and the Czech Republic, touring throughout Europe, and some of the out-of-the-ordinary places he’s enjoyed playing.
The Top 5 features Oren Lvie, Justin Lavash, Bookie Baker, getting the House of Blues wrong, and toilets in Tee-wana
All this and a special mention for Mango the dog…

Jeff, from Winnipeg, Canada, spent the best part of a decade in Seoul, South Korea, before returning back to Winnipeg at the end of 2017.
As well as getting into Jeff’s Expat Journey, we also touch on how he got into improv and the stand-up comedy scene.
Working as a founding member of the Stand-Up Seoul organisation, taking comedy shows on the road in South Korea - with special mentions for Expat outposts such as Pohang and Gumi - all this and the best gravy he’s ever had...What’s not to like?
What are some of the differences between audiences in Canada and South Korea? Does material work in both places? Who’re the best hecklers? Jeff tells us more…
What does the ‘expat experience’ mean to Jeff and why you should give it a try...if you’re so inclined. Pub quizzes, soju stories and working on the same bill as - and I quote -

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by Kenneth May, Jacob Smith, and Sebastien Simon.
All the guests are currently living and working in Busan, South Korea, but hail from the US and France respectively.
We got together to talk about the Liquid Arts Project and the 72 Hour Film Festival that will take place between November 19th and the 22nd - when they will screen the final entries.
So...what is the Liquid Arts Network you might ask?
Liquid Arts was founded in Busan, South Korea. It has served as a stage for the local community to share their talents since 2000. The community has continued to grow its roots within Korea, while simultaneously planting seeds across the globe.
Kenneth opens our conversation with more details on how it all started.
Sebastien, who serves as the main film expert in the group, and has also worked with the Busan International Film Festival amongst others...tells us how he got involved with the project and how it’d lead to him now teaching film at a university in Busan.
Jacob, gives us more insight into how the 72 Hour Film Fest originated, it’s previous incarnations, and his role in it. You could say more of a behind the scenes role...but integral, nevertheless.
You’ll hear about how the Film Festival actually works - and why the winners could be included in a special, out-of-competition section of the 38th Busan International Short Film Festival (April 2021).
The team describe how you can participate…styles, genres, props and locations...as well as a recap of some previous notable entries.
What makes the Busan arts scene so active and why experimentation is vital? As well as wanting to involve the local, expatriate and foreign student communities in Busan into the project. It’s open to all…
We also find out about the many other film festivals that take place in South Korea
All this and your own shot at the Oscars...no kidding!

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by Chris Tusa.
Percussionist Chris joined the Wuhan Philharmonic as Principal Timpanist in March 2013. He has performed with numerous orchestras, including the Southwest Florida Philharmonic, Palm Beach Pops Orchestra and the Breckenridge Music Festival. Chris’s currently in New Jersey, and patiently waiting on his return to Wuhan, China, hopefully, in the next few weeks.
Chris and I talk over how he started out in marching bands in high school, moving to the Lynn Conservatory in Florida, and subsequently falling in love with the timpani. We also delve into how Chris has played to diverse crowds in Florida - with POPS orchestras and with J Zee and LMFAO in Vegas, and with his own band in Wuhan - The Freedom Searchers...and Chris talks us through how Wuhan has become a hub for major orchestras, as well as his own.
We get into what part the timpani plays in the orchestra...and what Chris’s role as Principal Timpanist entails...and you’d be surprised how much you can pay for a set.
There’s chat about the complexities of playing movie scores, advice on how to get started out on classical music - if you’re new to it, the pros and cons of orchestra life, and Chris’s own project - expatdrummer.com

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by Amelia Judd and Michael Woods.
Both guests are currently living and working in Busan, South Korea, but hail from the UK and US respectively.
We initially planned on recording this pod to coincide with the ‘New Normality’ Art Exhibition that both of them had contributed works to...but we couldn’t get the dates to work.
Nevertheless, we talk EXPAT journeys, some great stories and locations...
how they both got into ART, what mediums and styles they like to use…from illustration to the more classic - fine arts
Who inspires them artistically - from Frida Kahlo to Bob Ross…and the Italian Masters…
Later on, we hear how the New Normality Exhibition came to fruition...and how it was relatively easy to choose a theme...the name might give you a hint…
Michael and Amelia describe the pieces they created for the exhibition and working to a tight deadline. As well as plans for more exhibitions in the New Year
And we also ponder algorithms, demographics and just who is using what type of social media…And are Czechs and South Koreans more similar than we might think?

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by Alex Macintosh.
Originally from Canada, Alex has called Budapest home since 2018 AND Before moving to Hungary, he lived in South Korea for several years.
Upon arriving in Budapest, Alex was really shocked to see such numbers of people living on the street. He explains that he didn't feel that putting spare change into people’s cups would have much effect in helping the person or help address the overall issue. So, he set up the Budapest Street Project.
His initial idea was to create something to sell as a souvenir and donate some proceeds to charity, but it soon began to grow into something bigger - Good Deeds Events
People volunteering to do simple but kind things for people in need, like-minded artists who want to use their talents to help the community, and forward-thinking businesses who understand the importance of growing together.
To raise funds for the Budapest Street Project, they create art prints and sell them. Half of the funds goes directly to a shelter or cause, the other half goes back into the project. Alex tells us more about the art and the artists..
You’ll be intrigued to hear about Alex’s experience of volunteering while in South Korea, and how that influenced his decision to set up Budapest Street Project.
You can find out more at https://budapeststreetproject.com
After the break, we hear more about Alex’s Expat story. As he recalls, “ I was selling door-to-door in Ottawa...and I needed an hour to think about quitting Canada and going to live and work in South Korea.”
Alex details why he chose Budapest, the Paris of the East, how he gravitated to soft skills training and running workshops in the city and We also find out about how his Toastmaster’s experience has helped him working with entrepreneurs, start-ups, and small-business owners.
Finally, the Top 5 features Harry Styles, The Killers, Budapest Park for gigs, What’s the connection between Psychologist Alan Watts and the Rapper - Logic -, 21 Pilots...and being followed back on Instagram by The Tragically Hip…

On this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I’m flying solo.
With my interview being cancelled at the last minute, and still feeling in the mood for some kind of creativity, I thought I’d put out something different this week.
So, what is it?
Well, I’ll take a look at new music from Public Enemy, Chris Stapleton, Richard Thompson, Larkin Poe, and Doves. Something new for your playlist.
On the plus side, it's only about 10 minutes long. And, if you're counting, I've switched from saying 'interesting' too often, to 'fantastic'.
Man, I should really put that thesaurus to better use. Enjoy!

Jenny gives us some insight into the themes behind the songs, why it's a great feeling turning a negative into a positive, and we ponder - "How dark is dark?"

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I spoke with Jenny Apelmo Mattsson.
Jenny describes her Expat journey from her native Gothenburg, Sweden to Hamburg, via Berlin.
After graduating from music college, Jenny decided that she wanted to try something different and has now called Germany home for the past 10 years.
We talk about how she first got into bass playing and her musical background, as well as why Sweden has been able to produce so many excellent musicians. Maybe a lesson we could all learn from?
Jenny highlights some of the differences between the music scene in both countries, as well as the perils of playing your own songs to an audience.
We get into her work with Torpus and The Art Directors, and of course, how her new album ‘Patterns’ came together.
Jenny explains some of the themes behind the songs on the album, and why it was important for her to have a backing band that was made-up of both sexes...and we ponder- where have all the female drummers gone?
In the Top 5, there’s Justin Timberlake, The Big Thief, being stuck in 2010’s Indie Music Scene…as well as a plethora of Swedish acts for us to check out…
All this and The Beatles singing in German, AND playing in people’s back gardens!

Caleb's Top 5 includes name-dropping a few of the famous celebs he's met over the years, being deafened by The Ramones at CBGB's, why Billy Joel is somewhat misunderstood, Bill Burr, Chris Farley, and knowing your type as an actor.
We also ask how tall you need to be to play Hamlet. Quite...apparently.
I've left this mostly unedited, so you'll hear me butchering the English language in all its glory. Slightly hungover from the night before...but hey, not my first rodeo.
Thanks to Caleb for joining in and really getting into the swing of things.

In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by Caleb Sekeres.
Originally from Providence, Rhode Island, Caleb has been resident in Gwangju, South Korea for close to a decade.
You’ll hear Caleb tell how he made his way from the North-East of the US to Asia, first working as an actor in numerous professional productions, Shakespeare, and the Avant-garde scene in New York City.
We talk Broadway, off-Broadway, off-off-Broadway and why an actor’s life can be such a precarious one.
There’s also talk of what motivated Caleb to move to Asia in the first place, the strange and unusual things you’ll come across while visiting smaller cities in South Korea...and living the dream!
Caleb and his wife now run a small bar in Gwangju called Nirvana. Of course, anyone opening a new business it’s not easy...and especially when you open it just before the pandemic…
Caleb gives us a rundown of how it came about and what they offer...it sounds like a cool place to drop by for a cocktail - if you’re in the neighbourhood!
All this and the benefits of being a really good dancer!

The guys tell us more about this small, South-East Asian country and what it's like to teach there. As is usually the case, there's more to it than meets the eye.
On the musical front, we chat about finding gigs on an island with no bars, some unusual venues, and where to meet like-minded musical souls.

Dolores – The first release from Mama got a Jukebox
Brunei’s expat teaching community rocks
[Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, August. 22nd, 2020] — Mama got a Jukebox, a band made up entirely of expat English teachers in Brunei has paid tribute to Cranberries singer Dolores O'Riordan with their new release, Delores.
The band: Wix (vocals and guitar), Steel(guitar), Nutsack (Drums), Bear (Guitar), RTB (Bass) and Izzy(Keyboards) wrote the track to perform locally. It was recorded it during the Covid 19 pandemic.
“I think everyone has been touched in some way by Dolores O'Riordan and the Cranberies music whether they know the band or not,” said singer and guitarist Wix. “They’ve heard it on the radio, a party, or some live event, and it has affected them in some way. That’s certainly true for all of us. We just wanted to say thanks.”
The track has been very warmly received in Brunei and is now available to the rest of the world.

In this episode of the podcast, I was joined by Chris Tharp.
Chris is an American expat, originally from Seattle, and has been living in Busan, South Korea since 2004
We talk about what brought him to South Korea, his past life as a revolutionary theatre artist, and the adventures of starting out in a new country - from scratch.
Moving to another continent to live and work, we hear how Chris was eager to adopt the trappings of a young traveler and to soak it all up…something akin to what Anthony Bourdain became known for.
We get into how Chris started blogging in the early years, writing for local magazines, getting into travel writing, and gradually building up a following in the days before social media really took over. He also gives some good advice on what to do...and not to do...to gain exposure for your work.
Alongside Brian Aylward, Chris was at the fore-front of bringing stand-up to a group-orientated culture. He recounts how the stand-up comedy scene in South Korea and Busan in particular evolved over the years.
We talk dodgy promoters, chasing your dinner around the plate, and why moving to South Korea is a bit like entering the witness protection programme...

On the first episode back after our summer break, I was joined by Justin Jardine.
Justin talks us through his expat journey from Wisconsin to Hamburg...via Freiburg and Vienna...and we also dig deep into his musical exploits along the way.
Discovering guitars and distortion at an early age, Justin really got into the thriving punk scene at home. We talk DIY, Under-The-Radar, and Pop-up gigs and Justin describes how it helped him become more politically and socially aware and how this also led to his musical tastes changing over time.
Moving abroad, opened up a whole new avenue of opportunities and possibilities. Who knew that there was a Bluegrass scene in Hamburg? Justin tells us all about it, as well as his main project - Raindance Kid.
We talk differences in playing in a band as an expat and playing in one at home, putting shows together and touring, and how he got into playing pedal steel guitar.
There’s Opera Houses, The Lemonheads, Sturgill Simpson's weird synth player, and just why has Justin been in so many bands with ‘KID’ in the name?

I was joined by Derek Hannon and we talk about his expat journey from Galway, Ireland, to South Korea - via Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.
Derek tells of how he landed in Kwangju, South Korea, without knowing much about the country...and the ominous task of teaching several hundred Kindergarten students that lay ahead, in the early days.
Derek explains how he got into the bar business and the integral role an expat bar plays in a city outside of the capital.
We compare the red tape of setting up a business at home and abroad...you might be surprised...and finding the balance between work and play!...all this and being pointed at in the street - in a good way.

In this preview of a forthcoming episode, Tommy describes how singing in a couple of bands in Seoul, South Korea, really changed the way he looked at music.
It was while he was fronting The Spiritual Hustlers, a Grateful Dead tribute band, and Short Bus, a funk and soul, multi-national ensemble, that Tommy realized that it wasn't so much what the bands could do for him, but definitely more what he could do for the band.
As Tommy says, it really was about bringing joy to people and sharing those positive vibes with one and all.
The Spiritual Hustlers were: Tommy Reynolds - Vocals Andrew Christiansen - Guitars Nate Rafferty - Guitars Adam Caruana - Bass Guitar George Bozanich - Piano Trevor Clements - Drums Kari van der Kloot - Vocals

In this episode of the Can't Find My Way Home podcast, I spoke with American expat, Andy Knowlton.
In this first of a two-parter, Andy and I explore how he landed in Korea and his early expat life in France.
There's talk of 'Street Poetry' and 'Guerilla Art' and how Andy eventually wanted to bring those words and poems into a visual format.
Among the plethora of artistic projects and challenges Andy has undertaken include an annual poetry contest, turning poems into
something more vibrant and energetic (akin to the 'Off The Charts' documentary) where your poems are turned into real songs, as well as his
Pondicherry Books publishing company.
We round things off with a chat about the poet and novelist, Richard Brautigan and what Andy did as way of a homage.

There's more about their on-going, global musical project U R SEOUL, the ten-year EP anniversary, and a look at their current musical projects.
All this and an excellent Top 5!

In this episode, the second of a two-parter, I spoke with Jason Boyd, an American expat, who’s now living, working, and making music in Guangzhou, China.
Jason and I get into his expat journey and how it’s taken him to Honduras, Croatia and now, on to China.
We chat about the unique and strange opportunities that come your way while living as an expat.
On the music front, we discover what tunes really get a Chinese crowd going? What is the Wonderwall challenge? And why we probably spend an unhealthy amount of time in expat bars.
All this and an excellent Top 5!
Without further ado...Jason Boyd

In Episode 7 of the Can't Find My Way Home podcast, I caught up Tom Daly.
Tom's an American expat who has called South Korea home for the past 25 years or so. We get into Tom's influences, musical tastes and inspirations that led him to front numerous bands over the years.
We also cover some of the challenges of playing with local musicians as well as the changes in the live music scene in South Korea.
There's chat about band democracy, the pros and cons of running a live bar, and where to find like-minded musicians if you're new to the country.

In Episode 6, I spoke with 2 guests from Seoul, South Korea. about the 'A City of Han' project.
Sollee Bae is the editor of 'A City of Han', as well as the founder and organizer of 'Fiction Writers in Seoul'. Joining Sollee, was Ron Bandun, one of the contributing authors to the project. Ron also writes a column for the Korea Times.
A City of Han is a collection of short stories inspired by Seoul and other cities in South Korea. As the sleeve suggests, "there are three things a great city inspires: Romance, Music and Stories." The stories were written by expat writers in South Korea.
We get into how the project came together, some of the locations in and around my old stomping ground in Seoul, and themes within the anthology such as social hierarchy and the pressure to fit in. We also discuss 'urban exploring' and whether South Korean literature can rival the success of K-Pop and Korean cinema.
Of course, there's also the Top 5 with both a musical and literary twist.
A City of Han is released on April 16th 2020 and published by FWS Publishing. It will be available on Amazon and select bookstores across South Korea.

In Episode 5 of The Can't Find My Way Home podcast, I was joined by Jonas Künne.
A couple of firsts! My first face-to-face recording (in the salubrious surroundings of my kitchen) and also my first German guest.
In his career to date, Jonas has featured as the frontman/guitarist of the band Black Rust, as well as a prominent solo artist. His second solo album “Between The Bars And Blinding Lights” will be released on April 2nd and we get into some of the inspiration behind the record.
There's also talk about how he got into the music scene, the places it has taken him to, and learning the business in the 'old school way'.
As well as punk bands, Norwegian Black Metal, ballroom's in Dresden, and a track from Jonas' first solo album.
We round things off with a Top 5!

Can't Find My Way Home is a podcast where Expats from around the world talk about the music and arts scene in their new home.
In episode 4, I talk to Brian Aylward, a Canadian expat who now calls Bangkok home.
Brian has been a Comedian for 15 years, performing more than 3000 shows in 24 countries. Based on a bet made back in 2005, Newfoundland native Brian Aylward stepped on stage for the first time at a rowdy expatriate bar in Anyang, South Korea.
Aylward went on to pioneer the active English stand-up comedy scene in South Korea, officially establishing Stand Up Seoul in 2009 and turning the country into a legitimate destination on the international comedy circuit. Aylward performed hundreds of shows across Asia, taking his own brand of humour to Vietnam, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Cambodia, India, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Mongolia, Oman, Myanmar and more.
Upon returning to his native Canada in 2010, Brian went on to become the twice finalist in SiriusXM Radio’s “Canada’s Top Comic” (2011/2013), a national headliner with Canada’s Yuk Yuk’s comedy clubs, and performed theatre tours across Newfoundland. In 2014, Aylward set the unofficial Comedy World Record, performing twenty-one different 10 minute sets in one day at the Haebangchon Festival in Seoul, South Korea. Brian has performed at many festivals around the world, including Just For Laughs 42, Halifax Comedy Fest, Hong Kong International Comedy Festival and the Magners International Comedy Festival. He has also appeared several times on CBC’s The Debaters.
In 2018 & 2019, Brian headlined Best Kind Comedy Tour, playing to sold out theatre shows across Canada. In February 2017, Aylward's solo show “Big In Asia” was nominated for “Best Comedy” at Fringe World in Perth, Australia. In November 2016, Brian was awarded “Best Standup Comic” at the Canadian Comedy Awards. Aylward's numerous viral videos and sketch comedy character "Fadder" have garnered millions of views online. Nick and I talk about his Garbage Art Seoul project. How it all came about, the creative process and the seemingly never-ending problem of recycling and what to do with it. We also go into detail on his recent exhibition in Seoul, the move-away from over-reliance on social media, into something more concrete. There's also our Top 5 at the end of the recording...with a bit of a twist.
Garbage Art Seoul
We as a world entering 2019 need to start seeing environmental problems with a macro lens. the term "global" has rendered society passive. scales and magnitudes of issues have grown with the use of social media outlets. these warnings have become so immense that individual people become overwhelmed. unable to cure the world of its illnesses, individuals become defeated. the global concept needs to be paired down to a local concept. a panoramic viewpoint must be sectioned off. The air, the land, and the sea must be approached as my towns air, my cities land, my county's water. We ought not to wait around for governments to make new laws. We must first follow the laws already in place. Simple steps toward a visual positive impact on our environment. Each individual is presented with a mix of issues. Each town, city, and country faces problems unique to itself. This is the power of collective society. Facing separate issues as one world. Together as these issues are solved locally, we will begin to eradicate them globally. This is why I started Garbage Art. Bringing to light the dumping and littering issues here in Seoul, Korea through beauty. Slowing the pace of life down in order to see the little things around us. I also saw how the natural beauty that already existed was being destroyed by garbage. Too busy and too concerned with self economics, are slowly losing the remainder of the natural beauty here in Seoul. I take their garbage and make it beautiful in Hope’s of one day saving the beauty that’s being covered up. It's always been there, we just need to find.

In this episode of Can't Find My Way Home, I was joined by David Tizzard.
David Tizzard came to South Korea in 2005, 15 years ago. Professionally he works at universities teaching politics, history, and Korean studies. He has a masters in Asian Studies and is finishing up a PhD in Korean Studies. He has made frequent appearances in the media, including hosting his own radio show, writing a weekly column in the newspaper, and appearing on tv shows.
From a musical perspective, he has been playing here since 2006. He predominantly works as a guitarist, bandleader, and songwriter. His first band was a rock/funk fourpiece called The Decadent Gonads. After that, he started playing in a 3-piece that evolved from him on bass under the name Black Danger to him on guitar known as the Seoul City Suicides. This band played festivals around the country and appeared on radio. He also played in Bint Eastwood - a shortlived 4 piece playing original rock and roll. He has guest appeared for other bands on both bass and guitar, including for Glass Inspired led by Simon Upstone. In terms of tribute bands, he played bass in The Black Leather Lagoon, a Cramps tribute band known for the wild makeup and rowdy performances. He also played guitar for the Stoogicides, a Stooges tribute band.
Now, he is the band leader of Tampas Dusk - an original retro-tinged rock outfit formed in 2012 with singer Andro Paris. They have played a series of festivals, last year included the Arirang Festival on a big outdoor stage in Kwanghwamun with famous hiphop act Dynamic Duo and a beach festival on the east coast. Tampas Dusk were recently featured in a tv program about David's life and are currently in the studio recording their first full length album - 8 years in the making.
The tracks featured are A Better Yesterday (performed live on TBS) and Jindo Arirang (recorded live in the studio).
