Courtney Mix Davis was a star women’s basketball player at Villanova University who was enshrined into the Big 5 Hall of Fame in 2024. She was a key member of the Vilanova team that stunned UConn in the 2003 Big East Championship Game, snapping the Huskies 70-game winning streak. She was a 1,000-point scorer at Villanova and finished her career in the program’s all-time top ten in rebounds, assists and steals. Hannah Nihill was one of the best players in Drexel University women's basketball history. A Cardinal O'Hara product, Nihill played in a Colonial Athletic Association record 153 games over her career and she is one of just two players in Drexel history to record career totals of more than 1,000 points, 500 assists and 300 steals. He led the Dragons to a pair of Colonial Athletic Association titles and he is the second winningest coach in program history. She was a star player for the Aggies and will be taking over for her college head coach, Laura Hogan, who retired. Stackhouse has an extensive coaching resume in the area having spent years leading the West Chester Rustin High School girls’ basketball team and helped found the Delco Goats AAU squad.

He won 370 games at the helm of the Golden Rams and made such an impact on the school that later this month the basketball court at West Chester will be named in honor of him and former women’s basketball coach, Deirdre Kane.

Pat Horvath has been the head baseball coach at Division II Thomas Jefferson University since June of 2010. In 2024 he enjoyed his best season leading the Rams as Thomas Jefferson won 33 games and earned an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. That success led to Horvath being named the 2024 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year.

Sandy Stockl started the girls’ lacrosse program at Washington Township High School in Gloucester County in South Jersey back in 1994. She spent 31 years as the head coach until deciding to retire after the 2024 season – she will still be working at the school as a counselor. She won 300 games at the helm of the program and her coaching career came after an elite playing career, which saw her win three Division III National Championships as a goalie at TCNJ (then Trenton State College).

Ashley Sessa is a member of the US Olympic field hockey team that will be competing later this month at the Paris Summer Olympic Games. She is a graduate of Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square and won a national championship as a freshman at the University of North Carolina. She will be transferring to Northwestern in the fall.

Dan Pruessner has been the head men's basketball coach at Division III Eastern University in St. David's, Pennsylvania on the Main Line since 2019. In 2022, he led the Eagles to their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance and in 2024 Eastern won its first-ever MAC Commonwealth Championship and earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament win.

Jada Pierce has been the head women’s basketball coach at Niagara University since 2015. The Philadelphia native has raised the program to a new level, leading the Purple Eagles to their first two Division I postseason appearances and first ever D1 postseason win in the first round of the 2024 WNIT. The first coach in the history of the University of Delaware's women's ice hockey program is Allison Coomey. She will build the program from the ground up as the Blue Hens prepare to begin play during the 2025-26 season. Coomey comes to Newark after several years in State College as an assistant and then associate head coach at Penn State. As a player, Coomey was a standout at Niagara, where she also was part of building a new program.

Don DiJulia spent 35 years as the athletic director at Saint Joseph’s University in two separate stints. The first was 1976 to 1981 and the second from 1988 to 2018. He is truly one of the most respected administrators in the history of Philadelphia collegiate athletics. He was also a two-sport student athlete at SJU (baseball and basketball). In time away from Hawk Hill, he served as an assistant basketball coach at multiple Division I institutions and as Commissioner of both the East Coast Conference and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

The Golden Rams will open their 2023 campaign on Saturday, September 2nd, with a trip to Waltham, Massachusetts to play Bentley. The Delaware Valley University Aggies are truly one of the elite Division III college football programs in the country. In 2022, the Aggies went 12-1, advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals. Jarey Elder was a star defensive back at Division II West Chester University. Sherri Retif just recently announced her retirement from coaching after 25 years leading the girls basketball program at Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, PA. In those 25 years, she touched countless lives, won 539 games and led the Patriots to the Inter-Academic Athletic League Championship 20 times. Jennie Salmon took over as the head women’s fencing coach at her alma mater Temple University in the summer of 2022. The Penn Quakers of the Ivy League are coming off an uncharacteristic 3-7 season in 2021, but the team is looking to bounce back in the Ancient 8 in 2022, and they'll have a lot of experience coming back to help them do it. Hannah Prince recently took over as head coach of the Saint Joseph’s University field hockey team. The Villanova Wildcats went 10-3 in 2021, winning the Colonial Athletic Association title and advancing to the quarterfinals of the FCS Playoffs. Expectations are high for the Wildcats here in 2022. The Division III Rowan University Profs are coming off an unusual down year in Glassboro, New Jersey. The University of Delaware Blue Hens went 5-6 in 2021, 3-5 in the rugged Colonial Athletic Association. Now, the Blue Hens have a new coach who is a familiar face. Ryan Carty is a Delaware alum – he was a member of the 2003 team that won the national championship. Matt Leon caught up with him to get a feel for what is in store for his squad this season. The opener for Delaware against Navy will be in Annapolis on Saturday, September 3rd, and it’s a noon kickoff.
The Aggies of Delaware Valley University went 11-1 last season, winning the Middle Atlantic Conference title and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Playoffs. The Aggie defense was elite, allowing an incredible total of 81 points in 11 games. Duke Greco is in his 9th season at the helm of the program, Matt Leon chatted with him to ask about his expectations for this season and what DelVal football is all about. DelVal’s season opener against Westminster will be on Saturday, September 3rd, and the game starts at noon.
The Division II Lincoln University Lions are a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and coming off a 1-9 record in 2021. But that record may be deceiving, because the Lions proved to be very tough in the second half of the season. Paul McFadden spent four seasons as the kicker for the Eagles. From 1984-1987, he connected on 73% of his field goals and 98% of his extra points and was twice voted Special Teams MVP by his teammates. Not bad for a 12th round draft pick in 1984.

The NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships are going on in Eugene, Oregon this week. Many local athletes are taking part and that includes La Salle senior Liz Mancini, who has qualified to run in the NCAA Final of the 5,000 meter. Liz is one of four Mancini sisters who have starred on the track at La Salle, including her twin El. In fact, in qualifying for the NCAA Final, Liz broke her older sister Grace’s program record in the event. Matt Leon sat down with Liz Mancini, a Cardinal O’Hara product, to talk about her upcoming race, how much fun it has been running with her sisters, and much more.
The West Chester University baseball team is one of eight teams headed to the NCAA Division II Baseball National Championships in Cary, N.C. The 34-13 Golden Rams are champs of the Atlantic Regional and Atlantic Super Regional and they will open the National Championships on Sunday evening, taking on top seed North Greenville University. The Golden Rams were facing elimination in both the regional and super regional, but in both cases won two straight games to advance. Matt Leon caught up with Golden Rams head coach Mike LaRosa to talk about his squad’s success and the challenge now in front of them. The national championships are double elimination games, and West Chester’s first game with North Greenville University is set for a 6pm first pitch on Sunday.
Scott Fitzkee was a standout wide receiver at Penn State University who was drafted by the Eagles in the 5th round in 1979. He was a member of the 1980 Eagles team that went on to the Super Bowl and then starred for the USFL’s Philadelphia Stars.

The Saint Joseph’s University women’s lacrosse team is flying high these days. The Hawks are the champions of the Atlantic 10 for the first time in program history and headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The Hawks are being led by senior Lauren Figura, who has enjoyed an incredible season. The Mount Laurel, New Jersey native has scored 71 goals, shattering the program single season record. The 71 goals are also good for 5th in the country. Matt Leon caught up with Figura to talk about her achievement and the Hawks success.
Herb Magee is one of the greatest coaches in the history of college basketball. He retired following this past season, his 54th as head coach at his alma mater, Thomas Jefferson University. He finished his career with 1,144 wins, second only in men’s NCAA history to now-retired Duke head coach, Mike Krzyzewski.

The Division III Penn State Abington baseball team is having an incredible season. They have a 31-9 record under first year head coach David Miller heading into the United East Conference Tournament, and the Nittany Lions have scored more runs than any Division III team in the country. They're averaging an absurd 12.7 runs per game. This lineup is loaded, but leading the way is senior Ryan McCarty. The Pennsbury High School product is putting up video game numbers. He leads the nation with a .552 batting average, 27 home runs, and 85 runs batted in... in 40 games. Last week he hit four homers in one game, a win over Gallaudet. An infielder who also pitches, McCarty was recently named the United East Conference Player of the Year. Matt Leon caught up with him to talk about a truly incredible season.
Val Walker is one of the greatest basketball players in the history of Cheyney University. She was a star on teams coached by Hall of Famer C. Vivian Stringer and helped the Wolves advance to the first-ever NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship Game in 1982.

The Drexel University women's basketball team is still alive in the WNIT. The Dragons have advanced to the Sweet 16, and on Thursday night they will visit Seton Hall. Drexel advanced by beating Bucknell in a crazy second round matchup, 61-58. Drexel trailed by 17 points in the fourth quarter before storming back to win in a comeback for the ages. Drexel is now 28 and 5 on the season, and the 28 wins tie the program record. Matt Leon spoke with Drexel head coach Amy Mallon about the bonkers win over Bucknell, and what she expects against Seton Hall.
John White has been the head men’s and women’s squash coach at Drexel University since 2011. He is the only head coach the varsity programs have ever known. In 2022, the women’s team at Drexel finished its season as national runners up and the #2 team in the country. White’s resume as a squash player is incredibly impressive as he has traveled the globe playing the sport, and at one point he was the #1-ranked player in the world.

The University of Delaware women’s basketball team is headed to the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Hens won the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title to earn an automatic bid and in the first round on Friday they will play Maryland in College Park. The Blue Hens are the #13-seed in the Spokane Region, Maryland is the #4-seed. Matt Leon caught up with Delaware head coach Natasha Adair to talk about her 24-7 squad before the game with Maryland at 5pm on Friday.
There is a new home run king on Hawk Hill. Saint Joseph’s University senior catcher Andrew Cossetti, a La Salle College High School product, recently hit his 31st career home run to set the program’s all-time record, breaking the mark set by John Brue in 2016. Cossetti hit three home runs in a double header sweep of Radford this past Friday with the first homer in the first game tying the mark and then a two-run shot in the 1st inning of the second game giving him the record. The Villanova women’s basketball team is headed to the NCAA Tournament. The 23-8 Wildcats earned an at large berth out of the Big East. They are the #11-seed in the Wichita region and in the first round they will play the #6-seed BYU on Saturday afternoon at 1pm in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Matt Leon spoke with Villanova head coach Denise Dillon about the excitement of getting into the field and the matchup with BYU.
The Drexel University women’s basketball team is getting ready for the WNIT. The regular season Colonial Athletic Association champions, the Dragons fell just short of the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, losing the conference title game to rival Delaware, 63-59. On Thursday night, they will host Norfolk State in the WNIT’s first round at 6pm at the DAC. Matt Leon spoke with head coach Amy Mallon about the game and their season so far.
Erik Kratz spent parts of 11 seasons as a catcher in the Major Leagues. The Lansdale native spent parts of four seasons with his hometown team, the Phillies, where he became a fan favorite. He’s back with the Phillies organization now, recently announced as a new member of the radio broadcast team.

Amidst the backdrop of a delicate dynamic this season, University of the Sciences women’s basketball clinched a berth to the Division II NCAA Tournament. The Devils are the champions of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and they will bring a 23-4 record into a first round matchup with Le Moyne on Friday in Manchester, New Hampshire. Now this season has been played under tough circumstances for Sciences because it's actually the program’s last season. University of the Sciences will be merging with Saint Joseph’s University, and the Sciences' athletic programs will be eliminated, making this run extra special for our guest, long-time head coach Jackie Hartzell.

Kevin Owens is a Camden Catholic High School product who enjoyed a long professional basketball career playing in what is now the NBA G League and overseas. The 23-8 Rams have earned an at large berth after advancing to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title game and they will play Bentley in the first round on Friday on the campus of Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, New Hampshire. In advance of the matchup, Shirley talks about his squad, and how it sustained success amidst an infusion of youthful talent.
The Division II NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments get underway this week. On the women’s side, the Lincoln University Lions are in the field - an impressive feat in and of itself, but even more so considering head coach Janice Washington is in her first season on the sidelines. Washington talks about Lincoln winning the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament Championship and earning an automatic bid into the field. She also looks back on the Lions' 22-7 campaign, and previews her program's first-round opponent, Glenville State.
The Swarthmore College men’s team has earned an at large bid to the Division III NCAA basketball tournament. The 22-5 Garnet hail from the Centennial Conference and they will host the first weekend, opening with a matchup with Keene State on Friday at Tarble Pavilion. Swarthmore has become one of the top programs in the country under head coach Landry Kosmalski. The last five seasons the Garnet have played, they have advanced to the NCAA Tournament, and in 2019 they advanced all the way to the national championship game. Matt Leon spoke with Landry Kosmalski about his team’s journey this season. Swarthmore’s game on Friday is slated for a 5:35 pm start at Tarble.
It is always special for a college basketball team to make the NCAA Tournament, but there is nothing like getting in the field for the first time. That’s the situation for Division III Eastern University in St. David's, Delaware County. The Eagles lost the championship game in the MAC Commonwealth, but their resume was impressive enough to earn at large berth into the Division III NCAA Tournament and in the first round they will play the University of Rochester on Friday in Marietta, Ohio. Matt Leon talked with head coach Dan Pruessner about his 21-5 squad that has already made program history. Eastern’s first round game with Rochester is set for a 4:15pm tip on Friday.
The Rowan University men’s team down in Glassboro, NJ are getting ready for the Division III NCAA Tournament. The 23-5 Profs have earned an at large bid after falling just short in the New Jersey Athletic Conference title game, and they will play Susquehanna in the first round down at Christopher Newport in Newport News, Virginia. Matt Leon caught up with Rowan head coach Joe Crispin to talk about his squad, Rowan’s first round game with Susquehanna is set for a 5:00pm tip on Friday.
The Immaculata College women's basketball squad has qualified for the Division III NCAA Tournament. The Mighty Macs earned an automatic bid after winning the Atlantic East Conference title. Immaculata is 18-8 on the season, and they will face off with a national power Trine University out in Angola, Indiana on Friday night. Matt Leon caught up with head coach Chrissy Rhine to talk about this matchup and her team’s great season. Immaculata’s first round game with Trine is set for a 7:00pm tip on Friday.
It is NCAA Tournament time in college basketball. Division I is a couple weeks away, but the field is set for the Division III men’s and women’s tournaments, and we have a lot of local squads taking part. The Neumann University men’s squad out in Aston is in the field -- the Knights are champions of the Atlantic East Conference and they bring a 21-7 record into a first round matchup with Williams College on Friday in Alliance, Ohio. Matt Leon had the chance to speak with Neumann head coach Jim Rullo about a great season for his squad. Neumann’s first round game with Williams is set for a 3:20 tip on Friday.
Keith Mondillo has been the head women’s basketball coach at Division III Gwynedd Mercy University in Gwynedd Valley since 1995. For much of that time, he also has served as athletic director. He has led the Griffins to seven conference titles during his run at the helm of the program, and his team has advanced to the NCAA Tournament nine times.

Logan Brockway is a swimmer at West Chester University. Last Thursday (Feb 17) he was in York, Pennsylvania with his team for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships. In the middle of an intense day of swimming, he went to lunch and the trained lifeguard ended up saving a woman’s life. Matt Leon caught up with Brockway to talk about what happened and how he feels about saving someone's life!
David Miller is in his first season as the head baseball coach at Division III Penn State Abington. Miller has already enjoyed a very successful career in coaching, including leading the La Salle Explorers until the program was discontinued. His coaching career follows his playing days where he starred at Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia and then Clemson University.
He was eventually drafted in the first round by the Cleveland Indians in 1995, and reached as high as Triple-A.

The Villanova women’s basketball team is having a great season. The Wildcats are 17-7 overall, 11-4 in the Big East, and last week they turned everyone’s head with an impressive 72-69 win in Hartford against UConn. Matt Leon caught up with Villanova head coach Denise Dillon to talk about how her team is preparing for Sunday’s home game against DePaul, what’s working for her squad, and what the UConn win means for the program. The Wildcats' game with DePaul on Sunday will be a 2pm tipoff at the Pavilion.
One of the best performances on the local college basketball scene this season occurred this past Tuesday night when Division II University of the Sciences beat Goldey-Beacom, 64-56. In the win, Sciences graduate student guard Jess Huber poured in a program record 45 points. She went 14 of 22 from the field, 6 of 11 from the three point line, and a perfect 11 of 11 from the foul line. 32 of her points came in the second half when she actually outscored the entire Goldey-Beacom team by 8 on her own. The win improved Sciences to 18-3. Matt Leon caught up with Huber, a North Penn HS product, to talk about her incredible night.
Theresa Shank Grentz is a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. As a player, the Cardinal O’Hara product was a star on those incredible “Mighty Macs” teams at Immaculata in the early 70’s that won three straight national championships. She then went on to win more than 650 games as a head coach at St. Joseph’s, Rutgers, Illinois and Lafayette.

The Drexel men’s basketball team will be looking for a third straight win on Thursday night when the Dragons host Hofstra. Drexel is 11-10 overall this season, and 6-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Of course Drexel is coming off of a 2020-2021 season that saw them win the CAA Conference Tournament and advance into the NCAA Tournament. Janelle Benner has been the head field hockey coach at Division III Ursinus College since the 2011 season. During her time in Collegeville, she has led the Bears to five Centennial Conference championships and six NCAA Tournament appearances – reaching the national semifinals in 2011 and 2015.

The Garnet are 16-3 heading into a Wednesday night road game at Washington College and they are tied for first place in the Centennial Conference with a 10-2 league mark. Swarthmore have been ranked in the top twenty all season long. We caught up with head coach Landry Kosmalski about his squad, how they approached this season after missing last season because of the pandemic and much more.
Chris Widger is a Pennsville, New Jersey native who spent ten years in the Major Leagues as a catcher. He was drafted by Seattle in the 3rd round in 1992 and played for six different teams in the big leagues, helping the Chicago White Sox win the 2005 World Series. These days he is a minor league manager and was named Baseball America’s Minor League Manager of the Year following the 2021 season after leading the High-A Quad Cities River Bandits in the Kansas City Royals' system to a championship. In 2022, he will manage the Royals' Double-A squad in Northwest Arkansas.

Niki Clement is in her 12th season as the head men’s and women’s squash coach at Division III Haverford College. On her watch, the Fords have captured two men’s division titles and two women’s division titles. Her coaching career follows a very successful squash playing career as Clement, a Radnor High product, starred at Bowdoin College and went on to become a professional.

On her watch, the Pride have been a constant contender in the region, and she has led the team to the NCAA Tournament four times. In 2013, they advanced all the way to the National Quarterfinals. Her coaching career follows an outstanding playing career where she rewrote the record book for assists at Delaware Valley University.

The Villanova University football team is still alive in the FCS Playoffs. The Wildcats beat Holy Cross in the second round this past Friday 21 to 16 at Villanova Stadium. The Wildcats will be home again for their quarterfinal matchup as they welcome South Dakota State to the Main Line on Saturday. The Jackrabbits advanced with a 24 to 19 win over Sacramento State in the 2nd round. We talked with Villanova head coach Mark Ferrante about the Holy Cross win and what he expects against South Dakota State.

Tom Carlin has been the head men’s soccer coach at Villanova University since 2008. One of the greats in the Philadelphia sports media scene has decided to retire. Donald Hunt has spent more than 4 decades covering sports in Philadelphia and this week he retired from the Philadelphia Tribune. He is one of the truly genuinely good people you will ever meet. Hunt has left a lasting legacy in the city, and we caught up with him to talk about his decision to retire.

They had a first round playoff bye and now are getting ready to host Holy Cross on Friday night at Villanova Stadium. Villanova is in the FCS playoffs for the 14th time in program history. Holy Cross is the champion of the Patriot League and coming off a first round win over Sacred Heart. The Delaware Valley University football team has advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. The Aggies will host Muhlenberg on Saturday in Doylestown. The Aggies improved to 11-0 on the season with an impressive 62-10 win over Anna Maria College in the first round this past weekend. The Aggies defense gets a lot of attention because it has been dominant all season along but DelVal’s offense gets it done as well, averaging more than 40 points a game. It’s an offense led by senior running back Donte Simmons who has rushed for 1,063 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, and he was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Year.
The Delaware Valley University football team has qualified for the Division III NCAA Playoffs and the Aggies will be at home for the first round on Saturday, hosting Anna Maria College out of Massachusetts. The Aggies are one of the elite Division III teams in the country, 10-0, champs of the Mid Atlantic Conference for a fourth straight season and they have outscored their opponents 381-57 this year. The Aggies defense is a truly special unit. They have shut out three of their last four opponents, allowed double figure points just once this season and Del Val last allowed a touchdown back on October 16th. We caught up with head coach Duke Greco to talk about his team’s season, that defense and this first round playoff matchup.
There was a big milestone in the Philadelphia basketball world on Wednesday night, as the Division II Thomas Jefferson University women’s basketball team beat Shippensburg on the road 76-65. The win improved the Rams to 3-0, and the victory was the 800th in the career of head coach Tom Shirley, He is just the 17th coach in NCAA women's basketball history to hit 800 wins. We caught up with Shirley to talk about the milestone.
Cheryl Reeve is one of the top basketball coaches in the game today. She has spent 12 years as the head coach of the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx, the last four she has also been GM. Reeve has led the Lynx to 4 WNBA titles. Reeve is a South Jersey native who was a star player at La Salle University.

Jim Sherman has been the head baseball coach at the University of Delaware since the 2001 season. He has won 581 games with the Blue Hens, leading them to the NCAA Regionals on two occasions. The Villanova football team is now ranked as high as 5th in the country in FCS after a gigantic 28-27 win on the road last weekend at James Madison. The Wildcats overcome an 11 point halftime deficit, shut out the Dukes in the second half, and snapped JMU’s 20 game regular season winning streak, their 19 game home winning streak, and a 15 game winning streak against Colonial Athletic Association teams, including the playoffs. The win was sealed when the Wildcats converted a 4th and 1 from their own 29 with less than 2 minutes left. Head coach Mark Ferrante join's Matt Leon to talk about that win, the gutsy decision to go for it on that 4th down, and also take a look ahead at Villanova’s next game on Saturday against Albany on the road.
John Bunting spent 11 seasons playing linebacker for the Eagles and he was a key member of the 1980 team that went to Super Bowl XV. After his playing days he went into coaching and enjoyed a great run leading Division III Rowan University in Glassboro, and he is set to be inducted this month into Rowan’s Hall of Fame. He also served as head coach at his alma mater North Carolina, leading the Tar Heels to a couple of bowl games.

For the last several years Frank McKee has been teaching a course at La Salle University about William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, and Sam Hinkie, the former GM of the 76ers and the architect of what became known as The Process. McKee, the Director of the American studies program at La Salle, says the approach Hinkie took in building the Sixers has a lot of similarities to what Penn went through as the leader of Pennsylvania and the planner behind Philadelphia. Division III Ursinus College out in Collegeville has a new head women’s basketball coach -- Bobbi Morgan is taking over the program. Morgan enjoyed a ton of success at another Centennial Conference school, Haverford College, before stepping down earlier this year to take a position at The Agnes Irwin School in Bryn Mawr. But she’s back in the college game now with the Bears and Matt Leon caught up with her to talk about the decision to take the Ursinus job.
Stephanie Carideo is the new head women's basketball coach at Division III Haverford College. She replaces Bobbi Morgan, who led the Fords to 4 NCAA Tournament appearances in 13 years. Carideo comes to Haverford after serving as an assistant at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to that she was an assistant for the great Herb Magee with the Jefferson University men’s team. Herb Magee, the Hall of Fame coach at Division II Thomas Jefferson University has announced that he will retire at the end of the 2021-2022 season, his 54th as head coach. Magee, inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011, has 1,123 career wins, second all-time in men’s college basketball history behind only Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski. Magee has been at the school in one role or another since 1959. First he was a star player for the Rams, scoring 2,235 points, good for third all-time in program history. Then he spent four seasons as an assistant before taking over as the head coach at then Philadelphia Textile in 1967. Magee’s longtime assistant Jimmy Reilly will take over the program as head coach after the season. Matt Leon caught up with Herb Magee to talk about his decision, what he expects his last season to be like, and much more.
Philadelphia Area College Football Preview: University of Pennsylvania Head Coach Ray Priore
The University of Pennsylvania football team is looking to make a push for an Ivy league title this season. After finishing 5-5 overall (3-4 Ivy) in 2019, the Quakers did not play in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Head coach Ray Priore talked to KYW Newsradio about some of the strengths he sees on the roster, as Penn continues training camp in preparation for its season-opener on Saturday, September 18th, at Bucknell.

The Temple Owls were the only area college football team to play in the fall in 2020. It didn’t go real well. COVID-19 and injuries played havoc with the schedule and the roster and Temple struggled to a 1-6 record. But the Owls and head coach Rod Carey are looking to turn things around here in 2021 and make some noise in the American Athletic Conference. Temple will open its 2021 season on Thursday September 2nd with a non-conference road game against Rutgers.
Philadelphia Area College Football Preview: Delaware Valley University Aggies Head Coach Duke Greco
The Delaware Valley University Aggies had their 2020 season cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic, but they will look to pick up where they left off two years ago when they get back on the field this fall. DelVal is one of the elite programs in Division III. In 2019, the Aggies went 11-2, winning the Middle Atlantic Conference for a third straight year and then DelVal advanced to the National Quarterfinals of the D3 playoffs. Head coach Duke Greco is in his 8th season at the helm in Doylestown, where he has compiled an incredible win/loss record of 59-11. The Aggies will open their 2021 season on Friday, September 3rd on the road against Kean University.
The University of Delaware Blue Hens are coming off an impressive 7-1 campaign that saw them advance all the way to the semifinals of the FCS playoffs and hopes are high for more of that kind of success this fall. Head Coach Danny Rocco says his team's biggest strengths are depth and experience, and they're ready to play football games in the fall after last year's season was postponed to this past spring because of COVID-19. Delaware will open the season on Thursday night, September 2nd on the road with a Colonial Athletic Association game against Maine.
Sparky Lyle was one of the greatest relief pitchers in baseball history. In 16 years in the big leagues, the 1977 American League Cy Young Award winner made 899 appearances, all out of the bullpen, saved 238 games and had a career ERA of 2.88. He spent parts of three seasons with the Phillies, including 1980 when they won the World Series. After his playing days, he spent 15 years as the manager of the Somerset Patriots, then of the independent Atlantic League.

Mike McDonald has been the head girls basketball coach at Archbishop Wood High School in Warminster since 2015. On his watch, the Vikings have been an elite program, winning three state titles and two Philadelphia Catholic League crowns. Wood alums are found on college rosters throughout the Philadelphia area and beyond.

Kevin McGovern is a baseball player. He's a left-handed pitcher and a Philly guy, he went to high school at Archbishop Ryan and college at Thomas Jefferson University in East Falls. And for the last decade he has been moving all over the country and beyond, playing ball in independent minor leagues, with teams not affiliated with any Major League squad. That is a long time to be chasing your dream. But things changed earlier this month for the 32-year-old McGovern, when he was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He's spent the last couple weeks with their Double A team in Springfield, Missouri, the Springfield Cardinals. Mike Rogodzinski spent parts of three seasons with the Phillies from 1973 to 1975. He was an outfielder, but most of his time in the big leagues was spent as a pinch-hitter. In fact, he still holds the Phillies rookie record for pinch-hits with 16 in 1973.

J.J. Daigneault spent some 16 years playing in the National Hockey League. He was a member of ten different teams, including the Flyers. Dave Pauley just completed his 19th season as the head men's basketball coach at Division II University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. Prior to that he spent 18 seasons as an assistant for the Devils.
