Courtney Mix Davis was a star women’s basketball player at Villanova University who was enshrined into the Big 5 Hall of Fame in 2024. She was a key member of the Vilanova team that stunned UConn in the 2003 Big East Championship Game, snapping the Huskies 70-game winning streak. She was a 1,000-point scorer at Villanova and finished her career in the program’s all-time top ten in rebounds, assists and steals. Sandy Stockl started the girls’ lacrosse program at Washington Township High School in Gloucester County in South Jersey back in 1994. She spent 31 years as the head coach until deciding to retire after the 2024 season – she will still be working at the school as a counselor. The first coach in the history of the University of Delaware's women's ice hockey program is Allison Coomey. She will build the program from the ground up as the Blue Hens prepare to begin play during the 2025-26 season. Coomey comes to Newark after several years in State College as an assistant and then associate head coach at Penn State. Don DiJulia spent 35 years as the athletic director at Saint Joseph’s University in two separate stints. The first was 1976 to 1981 and the second from 1988 to 2018. He is truly one of the most respected administrators in the history of Philadelphia collegiate athletics. He was also a two-sport student athlete at SJU (baseball and basketball). In time away from Hawk Hill, he served as an assistant basketball coach at multiple Division I institutions and as Commissioner of both the East Coast Conference and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Kyle Davis is the first head coach in the history of Division II Holy Family University baseball. He has been tasked with beginning the program from scratch. Jennie Salmon took over as the head women’s fencing coach at her alma mater Temple University in the summer of 2022. Hannah Prince recently took over as head coach of the Saint Joseph’s University field hockey team. She comes to Hawk Hill after serving as an assistant at Louisville and she actually spent a couple of years prior to that as an assistant with the Hawks under former head coach Lynn Farquhar, who she's now replacing.

The Aggies of Delaware Valley University went 11-1 last season, winning the Middle Atlantic Conference title and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Playoffs. The Aggie defense was elite, allowing an incredible total of 81 points in 11 games. The Division II Lincoln University Lions are a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and coming off a 1-9 record in 2021. But that record may be deceiving, because the Lions proved to be very tough in the second half of the season. The NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships are going on in Eugene, Oregon this week. Many local athletes are taking part and that includes La Salle senior Liz Mancini, who has qualified to run in the NCAA Final of the 5,000 meter. Liz is one of four Mancini sisters who have starred on the track at La Salle, including her twin El. In fact, in qualifying for the NCAA Final, Liz broke her older sister Grace’s program record in the event. The West Chester University baseball team is one of eight teams headed to the NCAA Division II Baseball National Championships in Cary, N.C. The 34-13 Golden Rams are champs of the Atlantic Regional and Atlantic Super Regional and they will open the National Championships on Sunday evening, taking on top seed North Greenville University. The Golden Rams were facing elimination in both the regional and super regional, but in both cases won two straight games to advance. Matt Leon caught up with Golden Rams head coach Mike LaRosa to talk about his squad’s success and the challenge now in front of them. The Saint Joseph’s University women’s lacrosse team is flying high these days. The Hawks are the champions of the Atlantic 10 for the first time in program history and headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The Hawks are being led by senior Lauren Figura, who has enjoyed an incredible season. The Mount Laurel, New Jersey native has scored 71 goals, shattering the program single season record. The Division III Penn State Abington baseball team is having an incredible season. They have a 31-9 record under first year head coach David Miller heading into the United East Conference Tournament, and the Nittany Lions have scored more runs than any Division III team in the country. They're averaging an absurd 12.7 runs per game. This lineup is loaded, but leading the way is senior Ryan McCarty. The Pennsbury High School product is putting up video game numbers. He leads the nation with a .552 batting average, 27 home runs, and 85 runs batted in... in 40 games. Last week he hit four homers in one game, a win over Gallaudet. An infielder who also pitches, McCarty was recently named the United East Conference Player of the Year. Matt Leon caught up with him to talk about a truly incredible season.

The Drexel University women's basketball team is still alive in the WNIT. The Dragons have advanced to the Sweet 16, and on Thursday night they will visit Seton Hall. Drexel advanced by beating Bucknell in a crazy second round matchup, 61-58. Drexel trailed by 17 points in the fourth quarter before storming back to win in a comeback for the ages. Drexel is now 28 and 5 on the season, and the 28 wins tie the program record. John White has been the head men’s and women’s squash coach at Drexel University since 2011. He is the only head coach the varsity programs have ever known. In 2022, the women’s team at Drexel finished its season as national runners up and the #2 team in the country. White’s resume as a squash player is incredibly impressive as he has traveled the globe playing the sport, and at one point he was the #1-ranked player in the world.

The University of Delaware women’s basketball team is headed to the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Hens won the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title to earn an automatic bid and in the first round on Friday they will play Maryland in College Park. The Blue Hens are the #13-seed in the Spokane Region, Maryland is the #4-seed. There is a new home run king on Hawk Hill. Saint Joseph’s University senior catcher Andrew Cossetti, a La Salle College High School product, recently hit his 31st career home run to set the program’s all-time record, breaking the mark set by John Brue in 2016. Cossetti hit three home runs in a double header sweep of Radford this past Friday with the first homer in the first game tying the mark and then a two-run shot in the 1st inning of the second game giving him the record. The regular season Colonial Athletic Association champions, the Dragons fell just short of the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, losing the conference title game to rival Delaware, 63-59. The Swarthmore College men’s team has earned an at large bid to the Division III NCAA basketball tournament. The 22-5 Garnet hail from the Centennial Conference and they will host the first weekend, opening with a matchup with Keene State on Friday at Tarble Pavilion. Swarthmore has become one of the top programs in the country under head coach Landry Kosmalski. The last five seasons the Garnet have played, they have advanced to the NCAA Tournament, and in 2019 they advanced all the way to the national championship game. It is always special for a college basketball team to make the NCAA Tournament, but there is nothing like getting in the field for the first time. That’s the situation for Division III Eastern University in St. David's, Delaware County. The Eagles lost the championship game in the MAC Commonwealth, but their resume was impressive enough to earn at large berth into the Division III NCAA Tournament and in the first round they will play the University of Rochester on Friday in Marietta, Ohio. The Neumann University men’s squad out in Aston is in the field -- the Knights are champions of the Atlantic East Conference and they bring a 21-7 record into a first round matchup with Williams College on Friday in Alliance, Ohio. Keith Mondillo has been the head women’s basketball coach at Division III Gwynedd Mercy University in Gwynedd Valley since 1995. For much of that time, he also has served as athletic director. He has led the Griffins to seven conference titles during his run at the helm of the program, and his team has advanced to the NCAA Tournament nine times.

Logan Brockway is a swimmer at West Chester University. Last Thursday (Feb 17) he was in York, Pennsylvania with his team for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships. In the middle of an intense day of swimming, he went to lunch and the trained lifeguard ended up saving a woman’s life. David Miller is in his first season as the head baseball coach at Division III Penn State Abington. Miller has already enjoyed a very successful career in coaching, including leading the La Salle Explorers until the program was discontinued. His coaching career follows his playing days where he starred at Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia and then Clemson University.

He was eventually drafted in the first round by the Cleveland Indians in 1995, and reached as high as Triple-A.

The Villanova women’s basketball team is having a great season. The Wildcats are 17-7 overall, 11-4 in the Big East, and last week they turned everyone’s head with an impressive 72-69 win in Hartford against UConn. One of the best performances on the local college basketball scene this season occurred this past Tuesday night when Division II University of the Sciences beat Goldey-Beacom, 64-56. In the win, Sciences graduate student guard Jess Huber poured in a program record 45 points. She went 14 of 22 from the field, 6 of 11 from the three point line, and a perfect 11 of 11 from the foul line. 32 of her points came in the second half when she actually outscored the entire Goldey-Beacom team by 8 on her own. The win improved Sciences to 18-3. Matt Leon caught up with Huber, a North Penn HS product, to talk about her incredible night.

Theresa Shank Grentz is a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. As a player, the Cardinal O’Hara product was a star on those incredible “Mighty Macs” teams at Immaculata in the early 70’s that won three straight national championships. She then went on to win more than 650 games as a head coach at St. Joseph’s, Rutgers, Illinois and Lafayette.

Chris Widger is a Pennsville, New Jersey native who spent ten years in the Major Leagues as a catcher. He was drafted by Seattle in the 3rd round in 1992 and played for six different teams in the big leagues, helping the Chicago White Sox win the 2005 World Series. These days he is a minor league manager and was named Baseball America’s Minor League Manager of the Year following the 2021 season after leading the High-A Quad Cities River Bandits in the Kansas City Royals' system to a championship. In 2022, he will manage the Royals' Double-A squad in Northwest Arkansas.

The Villanova University football team is still alive in the FCS Playoffs. The Wildcats beat Holy Cross in the second round this past Friday 21 to 16 at Villanova Stadium. The Wildcats will be home again for their quarterfinal matchup as they welcome South Dakota State to the Main Line on Saturday. The Jackrabbits advanced with a 24 to 19 win over Sacramento State in the 2nd round. The Delaware Valley University football team has advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. The Aggies will host Muhlenberg on Saturday in Doylestown. The Aggies improved to 11-0 on the season with an impressive 62-10 win over Anna Maria College in the first round this past weekend. The Aggies defense gets a lot of attention because it has been dominant all season along but DelVal’s offense gets it done as well, averaging more than 40 points a game. It’s an offense led by senior running back Donte Simmons who has rushed for 1,063 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, and he was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

The Delaware Valley University football team has qualified for the Division III NCAA Playoffs and the Aggies will be at home for the first round on Saturday, hosting Anna Maria College out of Massachusetts. The Aggies are one of the elite Division III teams in the country, 10-0, champs of the Mid Atlantic Conference for a fourth straight season and they have outscored their opponents 381-57 this year. The Aggies defense is a truly special unit. They have shut out three of their last four opponents, allowed double figure points just once this season and Del Val last allowed a touchdown back on October 16th. Jim Sherman has been the head baseball coach at the University of Delaware since the 2001 season. He has won 581 games with the Blue Hens, leading them to the NCAA Regionals on two occasions. The Villanova football team is now ranked as high as 5th in the country in FCS after a gigantic 28-27 win on the road last weekend at James Madison. The Wildcats overcome an 11 point halftime deficit, shut out the Dukes in the second half, and snapped JMU’s 20 game regular season winning streak, their 19 game home winning streak, and a 15 game winning streak against Colonial Athletic Association teams, including the playoffs. The win was sealed when the Wildcats converted a 4th and 1 from their own 29 with less than 2 minutes left. John Bunting spent 11 seasons playing linebacker for the Eagles and he was a key member of the 1980 team that went to Super Bowl XV. After his playing days he went into coaching and enjoyed a great run leading Division III Rowan University in Glassboro, and he is set to be inducted this month into Rowan’s Hall of Fame. He also served as head coach at his alma mater North Carolina, leading the Tar Heels to a couple of bowl games.

Herb Magee, the Hall of Fame coach at Division II Thomas Jefferson University has announced that he will retire at the end of the 2021-2022 season, his 54th as head coach. Magee, inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011, has 1,123 career wins, second all-time in men’s college basketball history behind only Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski. Magee has been at the school in one role or another since 1959. First he was a star player for the Rams, scoring 2,235 points, good for third all-time in program history. Then he spent four seasons as an assistant before taking over as the head coach at then Philadelphia Textile in 1967. Magee’s longtime assistant Jimmy Reilly will take over the program as head coach after the season. The Delaware Valley University Aggies had their 2020 season cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic, but they will look to pick up where they left off two years ago when they get back on the field this fall. DelVal is one of the elite programs in Division III. In 2019, the Aggies went 11-2, winning the Middle Atlantic Conference for a third straight year and then DelVal advanced to the National Quarterfinals of the D3 playoffs. Sparky Lyle was one of the greatest relief pitchers in baseball history. In 16 years in the big leagues, the 1977 American League Cy Young Award winner made 899 appearances, all out of the bullpen, saved 238 games and had a career ERA of 2.88. He spent parts of three seasons with the Phillies, including 1980 when they won the World Series. After his playing days, he spent 15 years as the manager of the Somerset Patriots, then of the independent Atlantic League.
