Gospel + Mission: The Missionary's Life

1 Peter 2:9-19
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.
13 Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. 17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. 18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. 19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly.

Gospel + Mission: The Missionary's Lips

2 Corinthians 4:1-6
1 Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. 2 But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. 6 For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Our Condition:
We are perishing.
We have a progression of problems.
Unbelief - blindness
Our Cure:
God shines light into our hearts.
God's Means:
God's people declaring God's gospel.
Gospel Declaration:
- Starts with a deep love for God.
- Is fueled by a breath-taking view of the Gospel.
We must know the Gospel.

Questions: Who is Jesus? What did Jesus do? What must we do? What happens to us?
- We must continually apply the Gospel.
- We must learn how to contextualize the Gospel.
- Becomes urgent when we have a broken heart for people / deeply love people.

2 Corinthians 5:11-21
11 Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. 12 We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. 13 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. 16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. 1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you-unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. Genesis 2: Gospel Community: Do people know you?

Genesis 2:15-18
15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." 18 Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him."
- Community creates clarity.
We all have dysfunction.
Mirror analogy: do you see what I'm seeing?
- Community provides protection.
Applications / implications:
You need church as family. You have to take the initiative.
If you don't pursue it until you need it it's too late.
Four questions to determine level of community in my life:
- Does anyone know my biggest struggle or sinful tendencies?
- Have I invited people into my life to see how my marriage is, how I spend my money, etc.? Have I given them permission to speak into those areas of my life?
- How do I make decisions? In isolation or in community?
- In the last six months, has anyone asked hard questions or challenged me?

Ephesians 6: The WAYS of WAR: Remedies, part 3**

Ephesians 6:10-20
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.
- Resisting requires the strength of God.
- Resisting requires the resources of God.
Remedy 3: The Gospel of Peace.
Gives us sure footing.
- Produces "readiness" - spiritual athleticism
God as enemy.
- Our sinful nature aligns us against God.
- God is our enemy.
- We are God's enemy.
Romans 8:7
For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Ephesians 2:2-3
in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience- 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
The Gospel of Peace.
- Peace with God.
- Gives us a great future hope, despite your current conditions.
2 Corinthians 4:17-18
17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
Remedy 4: The Shield of Faith.
The enemy's arrows are assumed.
- These arrows are going to happen - it's a matter of time.
Faith quenches the enemy’s arrows.
- All of our actions / behaviors are based on our beliefs.
Take up the shield.
Defined: We consistently apply what the Bible teaches about God and the gospel to the issues of life.
Applications / implications: Live under the shield of faith.

Armor of God
- It's God's armor
Exodus 15:3, Isaiah 11:5, 59:17, 52:7, 49:2
It's all that we have and all that we are in the gospel.
- It's whole armor.
The armor must be put on.
"Putting on" is difficult work.
Remedy 1: The Belt of Truth.
Truth is foundational
- The problem of no Truth. (Gen. 3:1-6)
Remedy 2: The Breastplate of Righteousness.
Protects what is vital.
- Everyone wears a breastplate. Does yours prepare you for battle?
Genesis 3:7
Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
- Christ gives a battle-tested breastplate.
- Just as God provided covering for Adam and Eve, He provided a covering for us.
2 Corinthians 5:21
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
- Christ's righteousness readies you for war.
- Putting on Christ's Righteousness is hard work.
The daily disciple of gospel discovery.
The daily disciple of gospel preaching. (preaching to your self)
- If you are not committed to these disciplines you will live far below your gospel privileges.

- How thoroughly am I studying the Scriptures?
- How thoroughly am I allowing the Scriptures to study me?

- God has provided us Truth: The Word of God. It is the belt of Truth.
- The putting on of Truth.
We consistently read the bible.
We consistently apply the bible.
Applications / implications:
- How thoroughly am I studying the Scriptures?
- How thoroughly am I allowing the Scriptures to study me?

Ephesians 6: The Ways of War: Three Fronts

Ephesians 6:10-20

- We are fighting a war on three fronts.
Front 1: The Flesh
- The flesh defined: It's your inner desires that have been deformed and distorted by sin. The inner part of you that is at war with God.
- The flesh dethroned.
- The flesh is not yet destroyed. It no longer reigns, but it remains.
Ephesians 2:1-3
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience- 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

Galatians 5:17
For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
James 4:1
What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?
Front 2: The World
- The world defined: the prevailing world views and values of a culture that promote a pattern of life that is contrary to God's will.
- Worldliness: us adopting these patterns and world views.
- The World defiled.
- The World wages a war.
Front 3: The Devil
- The Flesh = the hook.
- The World = the bait.
- The Devil = skillfully baits your hook for a bite.
Three applications / implications:
- Be desperate in dealing with sin.
- Be diligent in the disciplines. Soak our minds in the things of God.
- Be determined to put on the armor.
