“The first game is massive. If we lose against Limerick we are under pressure for the next two games, we have to win the next two games. So the Limerick game is massive. If you can get a result you are looking forward to Wicklow. There’s only fourteen days between the three games so starting off well is massive.”

His captain Conor Sweeney echoed that sentiment insisting the need to perform against Limerick.

“We have to perform, that will be number one on the whiteboard. Limerick are a good team and they are getting better. If you give them a sniff or a bit of oxygen they will get better. The last thing we need is a dogfight so we need to hit the ground running and see where it takes us.”

In their first game back in the third tier after winning Division 4 last October, Billy Lee says his side will be focused on staying competitive with two of the four provincial champions in their division.

“We didn’t expect to have two provincial champions in Division 3. If someone had told me that we would be in the same division as provincial champions I would have told you it was a miracle because you would be expecting it to be in Division 1 or 2.

“The first thing is, we have got to be competitive against Wicklow, Offaly and Tipp. Then we have to work hard and make our own luck. I’m a firm believer that the harder you work, the luckier you get.

“All we can ask for is to work hard, be competitive and see where it takes us. We can worry then about our position then, whether we face Division 3 North in promotion play-off or relegation play-off. I’m not concerned about that now, we just have to focus on our fixtures and take it one step at a time.”

Both sides had their purple patches where they controlled the game but maybe coming out of the third quarter we may not have been in the best shape and we needed to steady things down and to be fair we didn’t panic and we kept trying to do the right things. “We didn’t go off script and if you stay at things long enough you’ll get enough out of it. I think the draw was a fair result.”

“I see it as a dress rehearsal. Its an opportunity to get the squad together. No better place to test a guy than to give him some gametime and see what he is like under pressure. The big one in the modern game, its all about first touch. Holding onto the ball and retaining possession. If your touch is good, you wont give away possession. Every mistake is penalised. It’s giving John Kiely a chance to bring them all together.

“It’s a chance to bring them all together. Get that army together, get a bit of momentum. Even though they may be under strength in some areas, they can still put it up to whatever team is put in front of them, even under strength.”
