Episode 66 of the ODU Wrestling Monarch Matcast, today, we visit with associate head coach Daryl Thomas. Practice has started and a new season of Monarch wrestling is here. On today’s show, we’ll break down the opening week of practice and talk about this year’s schedule and the opponents we’ll see coming to The Ted this year and what road trips Monarch Nation can be prepared to see around the country. Before we start, thanks to all the feedback received from #MonarchNation about the previous episode, the tribute to the late Jamie Kelly. Giving Day: Monarchs calling previous donors and contributors. I got a call from Larry Early. We’ll put the link to continue to give in the show notes for this episode. Like right here. Coach Thomas recently spoke at the Chesapeake Sports Club. What’s an event like this mean for a coach? Every starter who wrestled at the conference tournament is back. Coach Martin says there’s a belief on this year’s team that he hasn’t often seen. What do you see? Monarchs are ranked preseason No. 19 by W.I.N. Magazine, No. 20 by Trackwrestling and No. 21 by Flowrestling. Rankings from Amateur Wrestling News, InterMat and the NWCA have not yet been released. Schedule for 2019-20 Blue-Silver Intrasquad, first chance to see most, if not all of the Monarchs wrestle at home at the Jim Jarrett Athletic Administration Building on Thursday, October 24 at 7 p.m. November, the season kicks off with a new event hosted by The Citadel on November 3, the Battle at The Citadel. This includes ODU, American, Duke, NC State, Presbyterian, Stanford and the host school, The Citadel. It’s multiple entries and designed for mat time. On the same day, some Monarchs will also head up to the Princeton Open in New Jersey. Who is going where? November 10, the Monarchs will head to the Journeymen Classic, another modified individual tournament where pools of athletes will compete against one another. Follows the Northeast Duals. First dual of the year comes against No. 13 NC State on November 15 in Raleigh. The team will stick around for the Wolfpack Open that following Sunday. November will close out with the Navy Classic in Annapolis on November 23 just after Thanksgiving. December opens with a drive up to Fairfax for the Patriot Open on December 7 before the heading to your old neck of the woods, Edwardsville for a dual with SIUE. The calendar year closes out as the Monarchs will head to Fort Lauderdale to compete at the South Beach Duals for the first time. MAC foe Missouri is on the schedule. Who else will the Monarchs face as the format is two duals each day, then some time on the beach. 2020 Opens with a trip to Amish country as a number of Monarchs will compete at the Franklin & Marshall David Lehman Open in Lancaster. While not officially a home date, the Monarchs first competition locally will be at the 40th annual Virginia Duals in the Hampton Coliseum. The field this year includes ODU, Duke, Fresno State, Kent State, Maryland, Penn, Rider and Virginia. Now the conference slate in the MAC has changed significantly with the absorption of the old Eastern Wrestling League. January 17 sees the Monarchs home opener against No. 26 Lock Haven, a well-coached gritty team from central Pennsylvania. Old CAA rival Rider will get reacquainted with the Monarchs on January 19 at The Ted. The following week, it’s a road trip through the Keystone State and a date with Edinboro on January 24 and a dual with Clarion two days later on the 26th. Virginia Tech will come to town on Sunday for the annual alumni dual on Sunday, February 2. Tech always brings a big crowd. Another former CAA opponent, Drexel, which competes in the EIWA, will come to town on Monday, February 10. A non-conference dual with Navy takes place on Valentine’s day up in Annapolis, before the Monarchs wind through Fairfax on the way home to take on the Patriots of George Mason two days later. So with Rider, Drexel and George Mason on the schedule, that’s three former conference foes set to tangle. The Monarchs close out the home schedule with Bloomsburg on February 23 before heading to Northern Illinois University on March 7-8 for the Mid-American Conference Championships. So no Central Michigan or Ohio, possibility of seeing Kent State, but this is a drastically different conference schedule than previous years. Old Dominion University played its first competitive football game in over 50 years in August of 2009. In 10 seasons, coach Bobby Wilder's team became an instant force in FCS competition before a call from Conference USA and FBS football became a reality. Part of that reality is Monarch football players now competing in the NFL. Rick Lovato was the first to play in the NFL after he was picked up by the Green Bay Packers a few seasons ago as a long snapper, but Lovato, now with the Philadelphia Eagles, is the first Monarch to play in the Super Bowl. On Opening Night of Super Bowl 52 Media Week, Jason Bryant of Mat Talk Online and Andy Hamilton of Trackwrestling got a chance to talk with Rick about being a long snapper, his career as a wrestler growing up, what he loved about ODU and his relations to the ODU wrestling program. As ODU football is set to play in its first bowl game, Warner visits the ODU Wrestling Monarch Matcast to talk about his time in the school's Sports Information Office, working as a graduate assistant. Recently, Warner served as a sideline reporter for the American Sports Network during Old Dominion's win over Southern Miss in football. On Episode 14 of the ODU Wrestling Monarch Matcast, it's an NCAA championship recap with ODU head wrestling coach Steve Martin. For only the second time in school history, Old Dominion wrestlers earned multiple All-American honors in the same tournament and it was the first time since Peter Horst and Nick Garone placed in 1991 where two Monarchs were on the podium in the same year. To put that in perspective, 141-pound All-American Chris Mecate wasn't born yet. Mecate and 149-pound junior Alexander "Lenny" Richardson placed to help lead the Monarchs to a 22nd-place finish. Mecate reached the NCAA semifinals while Richardson earned a seventh-place finish. On Episode 12 of the ODU Wrestling Monarch Matcast, we'll recap the regular season with ODU head wrestling coach Steve Martin. The Monarch wrestlers are coming off back-to-back road trips that took them to Michigan for duals with MAC rivals Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan before coming home and turning around to go back to the Midwest with duals at Northern Iowa and Northern Illinois. ODU went 3-1 on the two trips, getting upset by Northern Iowa 18-16 in historic West Gym in Cedar Falls. The Monarchs rallied to beat Northern Illinois to close out the regular season ranked 22nd in the country and finishing with a 13-5 record in dual meets. Coach Martin is now 131-76-3 in 11 seasons. He's third on the all-time wrestling coaching list for career wins and can move past previous coach Gray Simons next season. Pete Robinson is the wins leader at ODU with 172, while coach Simons has 136. ODU has an opportunity to win its 500th dual next season. Wins over several nationally-ranked teams highlighted the schedule, including a win over a top-10 opponent for the first time in program history. The Old Dominion University wrestling program picked up a quality 25-12 win over Chattanooga on December 20 at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
Chattanooga, a longtime power in the Southern Conference, was ranked nationally by the USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll all season until they dropped matches to Purdue and North Carolina a week prior. Regardless of the ranking, the Mocs have been a traditionally strong program.
With the bout starting at 165 pounds, it meant we'd have the Warner brothers -- no, not those Warner Brothers -- but Tristan and T.C. Warner bookending the dual. Tristan Warner started off strong and remained unbeaten on the year with a quick fall over Garrett Alexander just 90 seconds into the match.
Austin Coburn fell at 174 pounds to Levi Clemons, a wrestler with NCAA championship experience. Coburn was deep in on several shots, but couldn't finish. If Coburn finishes those attempts down the stretch, he could be in a position to win more matches and reach the NCAA championships.
All-American Jack Dechow was a bit sluggish, but came away with a 6-4 victory in overtime against John Lampe. It's the second time this year Dechow's been pushed into overtime by a visiting opponent.
Kevin Beazley took an early lead against red-hot Scottie Boykin, but late takedowns in the third were the difference maker at 197 pounds. Boykin's coming off a solid win over nationally-ranked Braden Atwood of Purdue.
At heavyweight, Jake Henderson struggled to get out from underneath the lanky Jared Johnson and gave up an escape and a riding time point for a 2-0 loss.
The Mocs won three of the first five matches to tie the Monarchs 9-9 going into the break. Coming back around to 125, Brandon Jeske showed that hey, that Granby Roll can work in college. With the score knotted at two apiece against nationally-ranked Sean Boyle, Jeske rolled Boyle from bottom and got two for the reversal and was getting a nearfall count when he kept Boyle's shoulder to the mat for the fall.
Mikey Hayes came after Nick Soto at 133 pounds, scoring a takedown out of a scramble. Hayes nearly scored nearfall points on the exchange, but Soto would pull away with an 8-3 decision.
With three matches left, Chris Mecate cradled up Mike Pongratz and nearly pinned him in the first period, but that's all Mecate would need to secure a 4-0 win.
Alexander "Lenny" Richardson secured the team victory, putting on a clinic against Shawn Greevy at 149 pounds. Interestingly enough, Greevy was one of three wrestlers in the dual who went to Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. The other two -- Tristan and T.C. Warner. Richardson would pick up a dominant 14-1 major decision.
T.C. Warner closed out the win for the Monarchs with a 2-1 win, using a riding time point and an escape to take the victory over Austin Sams.
The Monarchs will next be in action at the 52nd annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in Evanston, Illinois. The Midlands is one of the premier college wrestling events in the nation. Wrestling begins on December 29 with the placement matches and finals set for December 30. Fans can keep up with ODU updates from the Midlands by following @ODUwrestling on Twitter.
Now we'll talk with ODU Director of Athletics Wood Selig on the Monarch Matcast.
Some of the topics we discuss with Selig include where he wants to see the wrestling program head in terms of national competitiveness, his history with the sport and we also talk about the finances of college athletics as it relates to Olympic sports offerings around the country.

Most of the Old Dominion wrestling team was in action as open tournaments kicked off the season. Many of the starters went up to Binghamton to compete in the Jonathan Kaloust Open at Binghamton University, while most of the redshirts and freshmen headed west to Virginia Tech to compete at the Hokie Open.
On Episode 6 of the ODU Wrestling Monarch Matcast, we'll visit with associate head coach Mike Dixon to get a recap of those performances and we'll look ahead to November 22-23 as it'll be wrestling's alumni weekend as the 22nd-ranked Monarchs will host MAC rival Missouri, which comes in ranked No. 6 in the nation.
We'll go weight-by-weight and get a breakdown of how the Monarch matchup with the Tigers as well as give Monarch Nation some information on how they can be involved with alumni weekend.

Hey there Monarch Wrestling fans, Jason Bryant here with another episode of the ODU Wrestling Monarch Matcast. Today we’ll talk with 1967 All-American David Lindhjem, who will be inducted into the ODU Sports Hall of Fame on November 8.
Lindhjem wrestled for coach Pete Robinson during the early years of the program and placed fourth at the 1967 NCAA College Division championships. A longtime teacher and educator at nearby Norfolk Academy, Lindhjem will join Wendy Larry, Beth Anders, Alex Loughton and Izak van der Merwe as part of the Class of 2014.
Before we get to our engaging discussion with Lindhjem, we’ll give you a rundown of action from the first week of college wrestling season and previewing what’s next for your Monarch wrestling program.
Second-ranked Jack Dechow competed at the NWCA All-Star Classic at 184 pounds. He fell to Cornell’s top-ranked Gabe Dean 5-2. Dechow made ODU’s fourth-ever appearance, following Wayne Bright in 1970, and James Nicholson, who appeared in 2008 and 2009.
The freshmen got to work down at The Citadel Open in Charleston, South Carolina over the weekend.
125-pounder Josh Markham finished second, falling to Coker’s Travis Laxton 6-5 in the finals. Markham had two decisions and two technical falls on the way to the finals.
California native Emilio Saavedra finished second at 133 pounds, losing to two-time NCAA qualifier Nathan Kraisser of Campbell. Kraisser is redshirting this year after transferring from North Carolina.
At 157 pounds, T.C. Warner reached the finals picking up a fall, a major decision and a technical fall. In the finals, he was pinned by NAIA All-American Shawn McGhee of Campbellsville.
New Jersey native Joey Balboni took third at 174 pounds, falling early in the tournament to UNC Pembroke’s Terrence Zaleski, the eventual champion. Balboni won six consolation matches to earn third place in his first collegiate action.
The next two weeks will only be open competition for the Monarch wrestling program as they head up to Binghamton for the Binghamton Open, then head down to Raleigh on November 16 for the N.C. State Wolfpack Open.
A reminder the first home dual is on Sunday, November 23 at 1 p.m. against sixth-ranked Missouri. ODU enters the season ranked No. 22 in the first USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll that was released on November 1. That weekend is also alumni weekend for Monarch wrestling alumni. Join us for a weekend of ODU sports action with wrestling and of course, the football game on Saturday, November 22.
Lindhjem’s got some great stories about Pete Robinson, Carl Ragland, Lou Curra and some of the other personalities during his time in Norfolk.

Junior 141-pounder Chris Mecate came to Old Dominion from Highland, California, just east of Los Angeles. How did a West Coast kid end up in Norfolk? We'll find out on Episode 4 of the Monarch Matcast.
Mecate was the fifth-seed at least year's NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, but was knocked off twice during the tournament to wrestlers he'd previously defeated during his college career. Now Mecate has to shake off the disappointment of last March as he tries to earn All-American honors for the first time in his collegiate career.
Mecate talks baseball, the things he's learned around campus the last few years and shares his goals for life after graduation. He also gives Monarch Nation the lowdown on who the funniest guys on the team are and who has the better sense of humor between coaches Steve Martin and Mike Dixon.

On Episode 3 of the ODU Wrestling Monarch Matcast, we talk with head coach Steve Martin as the first day of official practice kicks off on October 10. Coach Martin talks about Jack Dechow's appearance at the NWCA All-Star Classic as well as his expectations for the five returning wrestlers with NCAA championship experience.
Coach Martin also goes into some detail about how he's tweaked the schedule to allow a better time to prepare going into the second year of competition in the Mid-American Conference.
We also talk with senior 165-pound wrestler Tristan Warner. The Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania native recently spoke at the ODAF Athletic Endowed Scholarship Luncheon. Warner won the NCAA's Elite 89 Award last season. The Elite 89 Award is awarded to an athlete in each of the NCAA's 89 championship sports with the highest GPA at the championship site. Out of 330 qualifiers, Warner's 3.97 GPA was tops. The double major in Communications and Criminal Justice. Impressive.
Warner also talks about why he chose ODU, the ties back to Cumberland Valley High School and what it'll be like to have his younger brother T.C. on the team with him this year.
He's back at 165 after going 174, 165 and 157, in that order!

In Episode 2 of the ODU Wrestling Monarch Matcast, we'll talk with returning All-American Jack Dechow. The Richmond, Illinois native is coming off a solid freshman season where he went 21-6 and finished fourth at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at 184 pounds.
Dechow will start the year ranked second in the country at 184 pounds. He recently accepted an invitation to compete in the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic on November 1 at the Palestra in Philadelphia. The NWCA All-Star Classic is an annual showcase of college wrestling in a dual meet format. Dechow will be the first Monarch to compete in the event since James Nicholson took to the mat in 2009. The first Monarch to compete in the event was Wayne Bright back in 1970. He wrestled Dan Gable in the match. Seriously.
Four members of the Old Dominion Wrestling family were present at the 2014 United World Wrestling Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Sept. 8-14. Assistant coach Alex Dolly was competing in his second World Championship representing Ireland, while volunteer assistant Kyle Hutter was there serving as his coach.
Dolly wrestled Azerbaijan's Gamzat Osmanov in the opening round and due to the somewhat antiquated "follow-the-leader" way United World Wrestling does its bracketing, Dolly didn't have a chance to wrestle any more because Osmanov didn't reach the finals. We call that "repechage" which is a French word meaning ... well, we don't quite know what it means.
Another wrestling alum, Dr. Fred Roberto of Power Springs, Georgia was with Team USA as the official team chiropractor. Roberto is a New Jersey native and wrestled for the Monarchs in the late 80's and early 90's. He's been working with Team USA since 2009 as the team chiropractor and runs his own office down in Georgia.
Then there's Jason Bryant, the host of the Monarch Matcast, making it three ODU alums and one adopted Monarch together in Tashkent. What a strange place for a wrestling watch party.
