Today’s episode is especially exciting as we reflect on two unique events illustrating the incredible opportunities Albany Law School offers its students.
Recently, Albany Law School held two events a week apart, with the Chief Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals as the headliner, hence the name Chief Week. Part one of Chief Week was the final round of the prestigious Domenick L. Gabrielli Appellate Advocacy Moot Court Competition, which was held in front of a panel of esteemed judges, including Chief Judge Rowan Wilson.
Just days later Albany Law School welcomed back Chief Judge Wilson to speak to students alongside former Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman for the Chief Judge Lawrence H. Cooke State Constitutional Commentary Symposium as part two of Chief Week.
The leaders of two Albany Law School groups that played a key role in making these incredible opportunities happen—Marie-Therese Witte, editor-in-chief of the Albany Law Review vol. 87, and Abraham V. Frangie, executive director of the Anthony V. Cardona ‘70 Moot Court Program—are here to discuss how those events unfolded.
APALSA president Isuri Poththewela and member Ambreen Aslam (rising 2L) join the Albany Law School podcast during Asian & Pacific American Heritage Month to discuss the importance of creating a welcoming and diverse campus environment while encouraging involvement with issues touching the legal profession, the law school, and the Asian and Pacific communities.
The Asian Pacific American Law Student’s Association is a student-run affinity group at Albany Law School that coordinates a range of activities, from academic, professional, and cultural events to school support.
Anthony Sokolowski '19 enrolled at Albany Law School as a father; balancing fatherhood and law school was anything but easy. Sokolowski is forever grateful that the Albany Law School community embraced him and his situation with open minds and arms. He credits much of his success as an attorney and a father to his time at Albany Law School and recounts one of the most memorable moments he has had with his son by his side.

On March 27, Albany Law School celebrated the 30th Anniversary of Kate Stoneman Day! The Government Law Center at Albany Law School hosted the third and final program in the series, Transcending Gender, Sex, and the Law, on December 7, 2023. In this program, panelist discussed the future of legal rights and protections for transgender, gender non-conforming, and intersex (TGNCI) people in New York State, including potential statutory reforms, regulatory reforms, and litigation that may impact rights and protections. Panelists also discussed lessons learned from other states and the role of New York State government and the broader legal community in upholding legal for TGNCI people.

Legal experts and government officials discussed thepossibilities and challenges of implementing statewide sustainable developmentinitiatives at the municipal level during the annual Edwin L. Crawford Programon Municipal Law at Albany Law School on Friday, November 17, 2023. Theprogram, hosted by the Government Law Center at Albany Law School, examined howstate initiatives impact local governments, the role of local governments inimplementing them, existing sustainability initiatives in municipalities acrossthe state, and the future of local action around sustainable development.
The program included a keynote address by Doreen M. Harris,President and CEO of the New York State Energy Research and DevelopmentAuthority (NYSERDA). Two panel discussions addressed the role of localgovernment in building decarbonization and investing in renewable energy,respectively.

The Government Law Center at Albany Law School hosted thesecond of three programs in the series, Transcending Gender, Sex, and the Law,on November 9, 2023. In this program, panelists discussed some of the manychallenges that transgender, gender non-conforming, and intersex youth andfamilies encounter in New York State, the myriad ways in which the legalcommunity, advocacy groups, and state government have worked to address thesechallenges, and remaining needs of TGNCI youth and families. Topics discussedinclude health care decision making and informed consent for minors, access toeducation free from discrimination and harassment, name and gender-markerchanges on identity documents, custody issues involving parents of transgenderyouth, and more.

Judges, journalists, attorneys, and law enforcementofficials discussed the rights, responsibilities, and liability of the media,courts, and law enforcement in a fictional criminal trial during the FairTrial/Free Press Conference: Gag Orders, Anonymous Juries, and the Media, onFriday, November 3, 2023, at Albany Law School.
The program explored the legal, political, and ethicalissues that could arise in a hypothetical scenario in which a fictionalgubernatorial candidate was indicted on federal financial fraud charges and aturbulent trial ensued. Panelists discussed the interplay of the SixthAmendment right to a fair trial and First Amendment rights to attend and reporton trials, including social media, gag orders, anonymous juries, policeconduct, and protection of the press and its sources. Jane M. Spinak, the Edward Ross Aranow Clinical Professor Emerita of Law at Columbia Law School delivered the 9th annual Katheryn D. Katz ’70 Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at 5:30 p.m.
Professor Spinak is a renowned advocate for children’s welfare, family rights and juvenile justice. She presented the lecture titled The End of Family Court.

Albany Law School Professor Jonathan Rosenbloom, recently released his new book, Remarkable Cities and the Security and Sovereignty of Food and Nutrition: 41 Ways to Regenerate the Local Food System.
The environment, climate, and society are rapidly changing. However, government regulations for land utilization and urban expansion lag behind. This powerful book delves into how local governments and communities can proactively transform zoning and development codes to effectively respond to changes by embracing a self-sustaining, local food and nutrition system that is accessible and equitable. The book provides dozens of best practice recommendations, supported by dozens of enacted ordinances.
Listen as Prof. Rosenbloom speaks about his recommendations and shares how we can rethink the role of development and how communities can grow while fostering a strong, inclusive, affordable, accessible, and healthy food system.

About the Book
This book, the second in a under the Sustainability Development Code project, produced by Prof. Jonathan Rosenbloom and the Environmental Law Institute, seeks to share different ways to jumpstart a move toward healthier, more equitable, and more environmentally-friendly communities. The book examines ways local governments regulate development and how that impacts the food system and offers 41 recommendations to amend development codes to increase food and nutrition security and sovereignty and create healthier communities.

The Albany Law Review and Government Law Center at AlbanyLaw School hosted a panel discussion exploring judicial selection methods forstate high courts employed across the nation. Panelists discussed how judicialselection methods can affect judicial independence, accountability, diversity,and public confidence. Jonas Caballero ‘24 is doing incredibly important, difficult, and necessary work helping incarcerated individuals. He speaks in-depth about it on this week’s podcast.
For those who are sensitive to the topics, there is discussion about rape and sexual abuse in this episode.
Jonas recently went to Washington to be part of a Congressional Briefing regarding the 20th anniversary of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). He is also on the Board of Directors and the Survivor Council for Just Detention International.
While the work is draining and tough, he does find time to spread joy. Most notably, he has helped bring therapy dogs to help Albany Law students through finals for years now!

Marie-Therese Witte ‘24 is leading the oldest student-led law review in the nation. As you might imagine, the Albany Law Review has quite an interesting history. When it began, it also served as a news source for campus happenings and updates. It was decades before the internet, after all.
Witte, a former Latin and Spanish teacher, is grateful to be part of the community as a non-traditional student and is taking advantage of many aspects of the student experience.

Albany Law School's 19th President and Dean, Cinnamon P.Carlarne, highlighted Reunion 2023 with her first State of the School address on Friday, September 29.
"Albany Law School is stronger than ever and poised tocontinue building on its existing strengths. I am proud and honored to get to be a part of this community," she said.
The speech focused on law school's achievementsover the past 12 months including 52,000+ hours of pro bono work by students, the school's top national ranking in preparing Government leaders, record alumni giving and engagement, and the institution's first steps in adopting a new strategic plan.

Roberta “Robbie” Kaplan successfully argued before the Supreme Court of the United States on behalf of LGBTQ rights activist Edith Windsor, in United States v. Windsor, a landmark decision that invalidated a section of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) requiring the federal government to recognize marriages of same-sex couples.
Kaplan went on to author Then Comes Marriage: United States v. Windsor and the Defeat of DOMA, chosen by the Los Angeles Times as one of the top 10 books of 2015.
Kaplan currently leads some of the country’s highest-profile commercial and public interest litigation, from suing the neo-Nazis behind the violence in Charlottesville to representing E. Jean Carroll, Mary Trump and investors in ACN in lawsuits against Donald Trump.
Kaplan left Big Law to found Kaplan Hecker & Fink in 2017 as a new kind of law firm blending a high-stakes commercial and white-collar practice with a fundamental commitment to public interest cases centered on values of
inclusion, equity and justice. The firm is majority women- and LGBTQ+-owned and more than 75 percent of its attorneys identify as women, people of color and/or LGBTQ+.

Nearly one in five adults in the United States are living with a mental health disorder and more than 70% have experienced at least one symptom of stress, including feeling overwhelmed or anxious.
Mental health doesn’t just affect quality of life. The global economy loses around $1 trillion in productivity each year due to employee depression and anxiety. Poor mental health and stress can affect performance, engagement, and communication on the job.
Despite the statistics, some employers struggle to promote mental health and support recovery. HR professionals and business leaders can help close the gap. This conversation will offer strategies to increase understanding around mental health, reduce stigma, identify resources, and articulate clear policies regarding mental health in the workplace to improve employee overall wellbeing, performance and retention. The session will also include advice on navigating personal privacy and other legal risks that may come up.

Albany Law School and Albany Medical College students continue to discuss the ways sexual assault, domestic violence, and intimate partner violence affect individuals and their care.
During April's Sexual Violence Awareness Month, Danielle Salazar ’23 and Chloe Ross ‘23 who work in the Family Violence Litigation Clinic (FVLC) within the Justice Center here at Albany Law School worked with Isha Doshi and Drishti Patel from Albany Medical College to present, "Maternal Fetal Complications and IPV," on April 4.
The presentation is a follow up to last year's, "Intimate Partner Violence: The Role of the Physician," which was presented as part of the medical college's student-led Community Grand Rounds.
FVLC Director and Professor Hayat Bearat assisted the students with the presentation. The projects aim to fill the gaps in care for survivors of domestic violence starting by educating practitioners who assist them.
Albany Law Journal of Science and Technology, Vol. 33 presented its annual symposium on April 4, 2023 focusing on Reproductive Data Privacy Post-Dobbs.

Judge Frost served as a staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York, co-chair of the Equal Justice in the Courts Initiative for the Fourth Judicial district, and as the Chief Administrative Law Judge and Director of the Office of Administrative Hearings at the NY Department of State. Last year, she was named to Albany Law School's National Alumni Association. In 2018, she was appointed as a city court judge by Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy.
In 2021, she began the United Against Crime Community Action Network (U-CAN), a program where first-time offenders 18-25 years old with no criminal record can learn from mentors and work on self-improvement in a year-long program. In 2005, she was selected for a post-graduate fellowship in government law and policy at Albany Law School’s Government Law Center, during which she served as an elected member of the Board of Education for the City School District of Albany.
THE HONORABLE PATRICIA D. MARKS ’74
Judge Marks was the first female full-time Assistant District Attorney in the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office in 1976 and became the first female County Judge elected in Monroe County in 1984. She served as a County Court Judge for 25 years and retired in 2011. Since her retirement, she has remained active in a number of areas throughout the law, including as Interim CEO/Executive Director of Veterans Outreach Center, a not-for-profit organization that provides advocacy, direct service, and community collaboration for veterans and their families; as a Hearing Officer with the NYS Local and Retirement System and the Title IX office at the University of Rochester. She also provides pro bono services to various family law clinics in Western New York.
Marks also presided over the Judicial Diversion Program and Veterans Court, which she created, and played a key role in establishing the Monroe County Mental Health Court. She is the author of 27 published legal decisions and several New York State Bar Journal articles.
Marks began her legal career as a legal assistant with the Monroe County Department of Social Services.
SECRETARY ALEJANDRA N. PAULINO ’02
Secretary Paulino is the first Latina to serve as the Secretary of the New York Senate and is an expert in New York State election law.
She was elected by members of the State Senate in 2019 and serves as chief administrative officer to the Senate and its 16 departments. She has increased access to resources and worked to improve working conditions at the New York State Senate. She has updated the Senate’s sexual harassment policies and has added cultural competency to the training for all Senate employees.
She has spent her career in several different government offices and adjacent groups, starting as a Senate fellow and has since served in the Majority Counsel’s Office as Crime, Crime Victims, and Correction Committee Counsel and Team Counsel for Public Protection. In 2019, she was the recipient of the Capital District Black and Hispanic Bar Association’s Trail Blazer Award.
The Government Law Center at Albany Law School preseted the second program of the 2023 Warren M. Anderson Legislative Series on March 22.
Panelists discussed state-level approaches to developing environmentally sustainable affordable housing. The Domenick L. Gabrielli National Family Law Competition was created to honor the late Associate Justice of the New York Court of Appeals. Albany Law School's Moot Court Board is especially indebted to Judge Gabrielli for his help in creating and promoting the Anthony V. Cardona '70 Moot Court Program. Schools from across the nation are invited to send participants. As the host of this event, Albany Law does not compete in this competition. The competition, which is an appellate advocacy competition, focuses on issues surrounding family law. Many volunteers are needed throughout the competition as judges and bailiffs. Volunteering for this competition is a great way to get involved and very much appreciated.

About Patricia E. SalkinPatricia E. Salkin, J.D., Ph.D.,’88 is the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost of the Graduate and Professional Division of Touro University. She is the former Dean of the Touro University Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center and previously served as Associate Dean, Director of the Government Law Center, and the Raymond & Ella Smith Distinguished Professor of Law at Albany Law School.
Her new book, May It Please the Campus: Lawyers Leading Higher Education, was published by Touro University Press in December 2022.
About the BookMay It Please the Campus: Lawyers Leading Higher Education is a groundbreaking study on the important and little-known role that lawyers have played as leaders in higher education.The book traces the history of lawyer campus presidents from the 1700s to present. The author explores reasons for an exponential increase in lawyers serving as campus leaders by examining the growth of legal education and myriad legal and regulatory issues confronting higher education.

I don’t know about you, but I hardly understand crypto in principal. Nonetheless, as through the centuries, the “law” has had to understand and adapt and you are living through the process as the law does that (just as people living through the industrial and technological revolutions had to do).But, we are lucky because Professor Chung gets this and is willing to share her expertise with us.

This presentation reviewed the basics of licensing an existing song for use in production which may be shown at a movie theater, on TV, via streaming, or other platforms.

Albany Law School celebrated the tremendous life of Peter M. Pryor ’54 and officially announced a scholarship that will perpetuate his legacy with future lawyers of color on May 25, 2022.
Pryor, a prominent civil rights attorney and public affairs leader in the Capital Region, died on January 17, 2022—Martin Luther King Jr. Day—at age 95.
On May 25, 2022, Pryor’s son Marcus and his family, friends (including Hon. Randolph F. Treece '76), members of the law school community, and public officials Rep. Paul Tonko and Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan ’94 spoke in the law school courtyard to officially launch the Peter M. Pryor ’54 Scholarship.
The scholarship will be awarded to Black, Indigenous, or people of color who are pursing law.

The Warren M. Anderson Seminar Series session focused on a growing wave of state laws designed to target constitutional rights while limiting judicial review.
Last December, the United States Supreme Court left in place Texas S.B.8, an anti-abortion statute. The legal mechanism S.B.8 used to avoid early judicial review may be applied to a wide range of individual rights and areas subject to federal preemption.
Copycat laws targeting gun rights, LGBTQ status, and other issues are starting to proliferate around the nation.

But in many cases, results have either been slow to materialize or difficult to communicate.

Jenkins is the current Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security, a position she assumed in July 2021.
She is the first African American to ever serve as an Under Secretary of State at the U.S. Department of State. Previously, she served in the Obama Administration from 2009-2017 as Special Envoy and Coordinator for Threat Reduction Programs in the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation. In that role, she coordinated American efforts on threat reduction globally and U.S. government programs in chemical, biological, nuclear, and radiological (CBRN) security and was the State Department lead for all four of the Nuclear Security Summits held from 2010 to 2016. She was the U.S. Representative to the G7 Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction.

The Government Law Center at Albany Law School hosted the third installment of the 2022 Warren M. Anderson Legislative Seminar Series, “New York's New Green Amendment: Mountain or Molehill?” on April 26.

The Government Law Review and the Government Law Center hosted its spring panel discussion continuing the discussion surrounding redlining—the discriminatory practice of withholding services to neighborhoods labeled as ‘hazardous’ under existing public policy—and its proven detrimental side effects for people of color.
Richard Rothstein, Distinguished Fellow of the Economic Policy Institute and a Senior Fellow (emeritus) at Thurgood Marshall Institute of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, delivered a keynote address to start the event. He is the author of The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America.

Albany Law School’s Kate Stoneman Honorary Committee was proud to announce that Berta E. Hernández-Truyol ’78 — an internationally-renowned human rights scholar — as the recipient of the prestigious 2022 Miriam M. Netter ’72 Stoneman Award.
The Hon. Shirley Troutman ’85, Hon. Marsha D. Michael ’02, and Rita Pasarell ’08 will also be honored with awards as each is recognized by Albany Law School for their outstanding contributions to ensuring equity and fairness in the legal profession. Each are role models and mentors for women attorneys and aspiring attorneys and have served as inspirations to others.

Join Justice Robert H. Jackson Distinguished Professor of Law Vin Bonventre as he goes in-depth on the background of Supreme Court Nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson.

The Wellness Initiative at Albany Law School invited Byron Fogan '08 to share his story of addiction and recovery on Feb. 23.
Byron K. Fogan is the Managing Member and Founder of Cocoon Strategies & Solutions, LLC.
As an attorney, he represented the diplomatic mission of a foreign government in the United States for nearly a decade.
He has a lived experience of substance use disordered behavior which impacted every aspect of his life, including his professional career, family, and freedom. However, by grace, he found a wonderful life in recovery from substance use and has enjoyed a life of continuous sobriety for the last eight years.

The Government Law Center at Albany Law School is pleased to announce the first seminar of the 2022 Warren M. Anderson Series. The Anderson Series is free and open to the public.
On Feb. 10, 2022 our panelists discussed ethics reform. While there has been significant public criticism of JCOPE, the state's current ethics commission, there have been differences as to exactly what is seen as its failings and what should be done to correct them.
This program explored these questions and examined proposals to make changes that would enhance government ethics throughout our state government.

Through this program students will learn a core understanding of government affairs and procedures, as well as the advocacy and lobbying tools and strategies needed in order to have a greater impact on public policy.

The arrival of thousands of Haitians at the southern U.S. border – driven from their homes by political chaos, economic desperation, and natural disasters – is filled with sad and horrific media coverage and political hyperbole about American immigration policy. This First Mondays program examines and explores the actual American and international laws regarding legal entry issues generally and refugee law specifically.
The event was hosted by Professors Ted De Barbieri and Patricia Reyhan and they spoke with expert guests Professor Sarah Rogerson, Staff Attorney Lauren DesRosiers, and Professor Alexandra Harrington.

The Katheryn D. Katz ’70 Lecture Series was established in 2014 to focus on the family law topics that Professor Katz made central to her teaching, including domestic violence, gender and the law, children and the law, reproductive rights, and inequality.

Keynote Speaker
Kristin Henning is the Blume Professor of Law and Director of the Juvenile Justice Clinic and Initiative at Georgetown Law, where she and her law students represent youth accused of delinquency in Washington, DC. Kris was previously the Lead Attorney for the Juvenile Unit of the D.C. Public Defender Service and is currently the Director of the Mid-Atlantic Juvenile Defender Center. She has been representing children accused of crime for more than 25 years.
Kris trains state actors across the country on the impact of racial bias in the juvenile and criminal legal systems.
Kris writes extensively about race, adolescence, and policing. Her new book, The Rage of Innocence: How America Criminalizes Black Youth, is forthcoming with Pantheon Books (Penguin Random House) on September 28, 2021.

The Government Law Center presents its third installment of the 2021 Warren M. Anderson Seminar Series program focused on future elections, including registration, early voting, absentee ballots, and the need for reform.
Panelists focus on proposals for reform currently pending in the legislature. In addition, there is a discussion of election administration and the possible need for revision, noting some of the recent problems that have arisen.
Finally, there is consideration of the new redistricting process.

Small business owners, especially those who are historically marginalized and discriminated against, are particularly vulnerable in times of market crisis. However, in many instances, laws designed to support small businesses exclude certain disadvantaged businesses from competing in markets by denying government assistance.

With the value of a single Bitcoin reaching a record-high of $41,982 in January 2021, interest in the cryptocurrency is seemingly exponentially. But there are still significant challenges along the path to legitimacy for this sometimes risky and complicated cryptocurrency.

When four private casinos were authorized in upstate New York, they were granted the right to conduct sports wagering. Thus far, the on-site sports wagering business of the casinos has been limited, and there are currently several contrasting proposals to authorize mobile sports wagering. This program will examine these proposals to see how and if mobile sports wagering can be authorized in New York.

“Crisis Lawyering: Effective Legal Advocacy in Emergency Situations” explores lawyering in emergency situations and attempts to identify and define what it means to engage in the practice of law in the midst of crises. The book aims to sketch out the contours of the emerging field of crisis lawyering. Contributors to this volume explore cases surrounding domestic violence; dealing with immigrants in detention and banned from travel; policing in Ferguson, Missouri; the kidnapping of journalists; and climate change, among other crises. Their analysis not only serves as guidance to lawyers in such situations, but also helps others who deal with crises understand those crises—and the role of lawyers in them—better so that they may respond to them more effectively, efficiently, collaboratively and creatively.

A group of 14 students – with the unofficial moniker the “Bombus Pollinator Association of Law Students” or “BPALS,” for short – and Professor Keith Hirokawa teamed up with the Center for Biological Diversity to file a petition with U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service on February 1 to add the American bumblebee to the endangered species list through the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

American pop music icon Britney Spears is 39 years old.
For the past thirteen years, her career, all of her considerable financial wealth, and many aspects of her well-being have been held in a conservatorship under the significant or exclusive control of her father. In a much-publicized case, Ms. Spears asked a court to remove her father from this role, threatening to cease performances were he not to be removed. The circumstances surrounding the conservatorship were recently brought to wide public attention through a New York Times documentary "Framing Britney Spears" and through #FreeBritney.
Conservatorships are familiar legal responses to scenarios where individuals, either because of age or cognitive impairment, are unable to act responsibly for themselves. In that sense, they perform an important legal and familial role. But the Spears case illustrates the problems embedded in stripping a large swatch of personal autonomy from an individual.
This month’s “First Monday” explores these issues with the guidance of professors and practitioners who have explored the tension between personal autonomy and societal/familial concern for the individual.

Nina A. Kohn, a visiting professor of law at Yale Law School and the David M. Levy Professor of Law at Syracuse University College of Law, delivered the lecture - Aging and Civil Rights - on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021.
Kohn’s research and teaching focus on elder law and the civil rights of older adults and persons with diminished cognitive capacity. Her scholarly work addresses issues in family caregiving, supported and surrogate decision-making, financial exploitation of the elderly, vulnerability and discrimination in old age, the practical and constitutional implications of elder abuse legislation, and the potential for an elder rights movement.
The lecture was presented by the Elder Rights Pro Bono Project through the Justice Center at Albany Law School, the Government Law Center, and the Albany Government Law Review.

In this very special podcast, and as part of Black History Month, we listen in on an oral history of the life of Peter Pryor '54.
Pryor was a World War II veteran and the first African-American to graduate from Albany Law School since the Reconstruction era.
He went on to a celebrated career as a civil rights attorney and in public service, working in several capacities under New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller. A prominent civic affairs leader, Pryor founded the Albany Urban League and served as president and general counsel of the Albany chapter of the NAACP.
He was a trustee emeritus at Albany Law School and Siena College.
He is a recipient of Albany Law School's Distinguished Service Award.
In 2015, the Capital District Black and Hispanic Bar Association created the Peter M. Pryor Pioneer Award to honor his life and work.

In “Delay & Irreparable Harm: A Study of Exhaustion Through the Lens of the IDEA,” Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Professor Rosemary Queenan examines the lack of clarity in the courts as to the interpretation of the exhaustion doctrine and the potential for irreparable harm caused by the often lengthy administrative processes. She notes that courts have long grappled with requests to bypass the exhaustion requirement in various legal contexts, often navigating the tension between the benefits of exhaustion and the harm caused by the procedural delay.
The paper is forthcoming in the North Carolina Law Review.
As a way to highlight the ways in which adherence to the doctrine can result in irreparable harm, and explore a potential framework for addressing those cases, Queenan focuses on the exhaustion requirement under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a federal statute that provides children with disabilities the right to a free and appropriate education, as it illustrates the need for a path to immediate judicial relief in certain cases to prevent the threat of irreparable educational harm.
On this episode of the Albany Law School Podcast, she talks about her paper and the framework she proposes to address the exhaustion requirement under IDEA, which can also serve as a model for courts in interpreting exhaustion requirements in other legal contexts where immediate or emergency relief is needed based on irreparable harm that could result from administrative delay.

Kimberly M. Mutcherson is an award-winning professor whose scholarship focuses on reproductive justice, bioethics, and family and health law. She has presented her scholarship nationally and internationally and publishes extensively on assisted reproduction, families, and the law. She was a visiting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics and the Columbia Law School Center for Gender and Sexuality Law. She received her law degree from Columbia Law School.
The Katheryn D. Katz ’70 Lecture Series was established in 2014 to focus on the family law topics that Professor Katz made central to her teaching, including domestic violence, gender and the law, children and the law, reproductive rights, and inequality.

As America prepares for the 2020 Election, we present a First Mondays program around voting rights. We will discuss the history of the struggle for voting rights including the Voting Rights Act of 1965 with our special guest, Professor Gilda R. Daniels.
Professor Daniels is a voting rights expert and former Deputy Chief in the U.S. Dept. of Justice Civil Rights Division, Voting Section, where she served in both the Clinton and Bush administrations. She is currently a professor of law at the University of Baltimore Law School and the Director of Litigation for Advancement Project’s National Office, a multi-racial civil rights organization.
She is also the author of UNCOUNTED: The Crisis of Voter Suppression in America, her first book. Published in January by New York University Press, it has already been called “required reading” by Ms. Magazine.

Today we are speaking with Judge Peter Crummey, Class of 1981, the Senior Colonie Town Justice and court administrator—a post he has held since January 2000.
Judge Crummey also maintains a practice of law in Albany.
He began a two-year term as the newest president of the Albany Law School National Alumni Association on July 1.
A longtime member of the NAA Board, Judge Crummey is a passionate volunteer and advocate for Albany Law School. He is a lifelong resident of the Town of Colonie and has five children, including Cathryn O. Crummey '22 and Carol E. Crummey '13, who is married to alumnus Jonathan S. McCardle '13.

She was raised and currently lives in Argyle, New York. For 10 years, Cheyenne has helped organize the Carl Lufkin Memorial “Pull for a Cure” held in Argyle to raise money for cancer research and treatment.

In this episode, we are speaking with the newest member of the Albany Law faculty, Professor Jacob Victor, who is an expert in intellectual property and technology law.
Professor Victor joined the law school on July 1. As a tenure-track faculty member at Albany Law School, Professor Victor will teach intellectual property-related courses and first-year property; develop a program for students interested in innovation- and technology-focused careers; serve as faculty advisor to the Innovation Intensive apprenticeship clinic, an experiential opportunity offered in partnership with the Research Foundation for SUNY and SUNY Polytechnic Institute; and continue his research on how intellectual property law is adapting to the digital age.

Today we are speaking with Kendra Rubin, Class of 2012, who was named the chief legal officer at the State Employees Federal Credit Union (SEFCU) just weeks ago.
Prior to SEFCU she was the vice president of governmental affairs with the New York State Credit Union Association and spent time in public service in the New York State Governor's Office, the Department of Health, and the Bureau of Program Counsel. She was named to City & State’s 40 under 40 list in 2019.

In this episode, we are speaking with Matthew Skinner '09, executive director of the New York State Unified Court System’s Richard C. Failla LGBTQ Commission, about the Supreme Court's landmark decision in Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia.
Skinner was appointed to the Failla Commission in December 2017. The Commission itself was created in 2016 to promote equal participation and access throughout the court system regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. It was named in honor of late New York State Supreme Court Justice and LGBTQ rights advocate Richard C. Failla, who was the first openly gay person elected to that court.
For those who may have missed the ruling on June 15, with a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the 1964 Civil Rights Act—which bans workplace discrimination based on sex, race and religion—also applies to sexual orientation. Prior to the decision, it was legal in a majority of states for employees to be fired for being gay, bisexual, or transgender.
