Today, the guys sit down with Dr. Asya Ofshteyn. They begin with her incredible journey of immigrating to America from Russia as a child to her career path in medicine and public health.
She has an incredible background and journey to where she is today and is well worth a listen just for that. But, not to be outdone, they go on to discuss the many interesting facets of her career as a colorectal surgeon. Cancer, hemorrhoids, fistula, fissures, prolapse, ulcerative colitis are just a few of the specific topics that come up.
Dr. Ofshteyn is a fun listen, and she admits to being a fun listen as you have to have a sense of humor considering her line of work. The guys can't wait to have her back!

Today, the guys sit down with Dr. Mohammed Al-Temimi, general surgeon specializing in hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery and cancer. John not only bombed on his scrubs quote, but of course had challenges saying the specialty. Garrett encouraged John to make a few attempts at trying.
Fortunately, Dr. Al-Temimi is a complete expert and perfect teacher. They discuss immigrating to America from Iraq, his true care for patients, and robotics surgery. They review the cancer treatment team involved in cancer care for the liver, pancreas and bile duct (hint, it takes a medical village). Dr. Al-Temimi also reviews the important role GI plays on the team (and hopefully a future podcast). And finally, they discuss the whipple procedure and how robotics has advanced the care for this major surgery (bonus points if you remember the scrubs quote).
It is a great listen and Dr. Al-Temimi takes care to showcase his passion for patients and expertise in the arena.

The guys sit down with Lee McMurray who works at Stanford Hospital for their Life Flight helicopter. So, naturally, the guys get to nerding out immediately about helicopters. We discuss her family history in medicine, her path towards OBGYN, the nuts & bolts of maternity and child-birth, her time and experience in New Orleans (with some cool personal stories she shares) and running her own small business. Garrett shares why EMS should always carry their equipment when transporting OB patients and John manages to pronounce all the words correctly but showcases a few....gaps...in his medical knowledge. Dr. Adrouny brings them both up-to-speed in a lighthearted manner.

They discuss starting a healthcare business, being a rep for surgeons in the OR, life abroad as an MBA student, sales tactics, psychology, traveling, iron man competitions and so much more. Today, the guys sit down with Corey Condren: firefighter/paramedic for the San Jose Fire Department. To say she has done it all is an under-statement: worked as an EMT and paramedic on the ambulance, burn foundation, breast cancer foundation, national EMS committee, lived and competed in martial arts abroad, interned for congress, and tune in to the first 5 minutes for the rest (it's too much to list but all way cool).
They talk about her life, career aspirations, life as a firefighter, the ins and outs of firefighting, support for women in the fire service and so much more. One day the guys will grow up and try to be just like Corey!

Today the guys sit down with Dr. Paul Kim. He is funny. He tells some great stories that makes the guys chuckle. They talk about family, orthopedics, going to medical school basically twice, sports they would and would not play when it comes to orthopedic injuries, etc. Paul specializes in foot and ankle but that doesn't stop the guys from asking all ortho related questions. There are some fun stories about training and working all over the United States.
Turns out, John can bench press more than Dr. Kim, but John will need Dr. Kim's services due to this so the streak for John continues with medicine taking a back seat to his endeavors.

Holy cliff hangers. Garrett and John left ya'll hanging with Dr. Lilja of the Offspring at the end of season 1. Will they come back? What happened to those guys?
Turns out the guys had actual jobs with real work and needed some time to balance life as podcast hosts downloaded almost as many times as Joe Rogan's and their actual duties working for the HCA San Jose Market. Almost, John still can't do math very well so almost is probably more like to the tune of 1 download to everyone million of Rogan's, but, hey, it's a better ratio than before we started the podcast. See? Cause then it would be zero....Oh boy.

In another installment of, "The Dirt" we have EMT Brian Newton.
Brian is an experienced EMT working in Santa Clara County, California. He has taken on projects involving the EMS labor movement, boards of supervisors, county internships for public health - basically, if it involves EMS, Brian knows a thing or two about it. And he isn't shy about sharing his thoughts nor were we shy in asking. A great listen to learn about some of what goes on within EMS that aren't stories from the street. Today, the guys sit down with Dr. Anup Singh. He is an interventional radiologist at Good Samaritan Hospital. What's an interventional radiologist? Well, tune in to find out! As a teaser, it is a sub-specialty in medicine where procedures that were once large surgical interventions are now minimally invasive. GI bleeds, uterine fibroids, cancer, DVT and other medical issues can be treated by sometimes something as simple as the prick of the wrist. The guy's favorite part was just after the interview concluded. Garrett hit stop on the recorder and Chief Garcia said he was having so much fun it only felt like we had been talking for only 15 minutes....it had been an hour and 45. Wow - what a podcast this one is! Today, the guys sit down with Dr. Hacein-Bey, interventional radiologist. He is an incredible guest and they cover a multitude of topics on and off topic relating to neurology and stroke.
Initially, the conversation begins innocent enough...stroke, neuro, neuro IR, causes of stroke, prevention of stroke, and even a touch of Covid-19's impact on healthcare. Garrett is very adept at coaxing a wonderful A&P lesson that is not too complicated but also in-depth enough to keep our medical professional audience engaged.
John somehow manages to navigate the second half of the show down a myriad of rabbit holes regarding wisdom, social media, where the human race is headed, and a few economic analogies.
This is a fantastic episode, the guys hope it challenges the listeners to explore different topics mentally and appreciate this awesome world we live in.

Today, the guys sit down with Dr. Rakesh Patel, a radiation oncologist at Good Samaritan Hospital and all around expert in his field. The guys admit there is little exposure to the oncology world related to their days in EMS. So this is a very ground up discussion regarding oncology, causes, treatments, the team involved with oncology care and what is involved during and after a cancer diagnosis. They also delve into genetics and genomics along with his work on a multitude of boards and commissions (including reporting to the President) all striving to improve oncology detection, care, and treatment.
Dr. Patel is absolutely incredible in making sometimes difficult subject matter (both in complexity and emotion) relatable and easy to understand. You can simply feel his warmth, compassion, and an unwavering dedication to his patients and their family - an incredible spirit to be around.
John was also excited because he finally got to discuss statistics and mentioned game theory - believe it or not, there is actually some math involved in this episode. Fear not though, again, Dr. Patel breaks it all for everyone.
John and Garrett were both blown away by both Dr. Patel and learned so much in regards to the care of the cancer patient - this is definitely worth a listen and please do share with a friend.

She has so many fun stories about nursing, being a traveler RN (she has worked all across America in many different hospitals), making friends in new cities, ICU care, and they also talk a little bit about sepsis (she is the Sepsis Coordinator).

David Lee is the Director of EVS (Environmental Services) at Regional Medical Center in San Jose, CA. Hospitals are a clean and often sterile place. Dave and his team work extremely hard ensuring our hospital is as clean as possible for you, your family, and the team providing care.

This is a fun one. Did you know that there is a physician who's role is to read the x-rays, CT scans, MRI's and other imaging studies? The guys knew this, and that was about the extend of their knowledge of radiology.
Today, they sit down with Dr. Lien, a radiologist at Regional Medical Center and level II trauma center. He discusses imaging, the lifestyle, x-rays, CT's, MRI's, nuclear medicine and every other method they have to look inside of you. How do you properly triage image requests during busy moments? How do you make recommendations based on certain images? How does positioning a patient help to get the best reads? There is an incredible process to the art and science of radiology, you do not want to miss this one.
It is a truly fascinating listen. Dr. Lien is an engaging speaker on the topic and you will instantly pick up on his passion. The doctors in the Scrubs TV show might have put the X-Ray image on backwards, Dr. Lien never would.

Think back to your favorite teacher in school. Had Dr. Borrison decided to follow her childhood dream to be a teacher, that is the name that would pop into your head to the question asked.
However, Dr. Borrison chose medical school instead of teaching and now the guys have the awesome opportunity to get educated on a very important topic: women's health. The interview is completely fascinating and you do not want to miss this one. They discuss A&P (anatomy and physiology), issues related to hysterectomy, and the history of surgical solutions.
There is just a warmth to Dr. Borrison that would attract anyone to her, and it is what makes her such an expert as she is able to connect to both the person and the science of her field. The guys can't wait to have her back as she has so much more to offer related to her work.

This is a great one. The guys sit down with the CEO of Regional Medical Center of San Jose, Tomi Ryba. Regional Medical Center of San Jose is a level II trauma center, comprehensive stroke center, cardiac center of excellence and home to One Team, an EMS and military partnership. And she is at the helm of this very busy hospital - and does a great job at it, both in action and in discussing it.

Today, the guys are very excited to have Dr. Allon Rafael on the show. He is an electrophysiologist (a cardiac physician who focuses on the rhythms and electrical conduction in the heart). The guys dropped their jaws in the first five minutes, he is that impressive.
He is truly an expert on the subject and exudes a genuine passion for both the treatment of cardiac issues and his patients. Furthermore, his ability to break down complex subjects and use analogies to convey points was absolutely incredible.
They discuss cardiology, cardiac rhythms, Afib, treatment, ablations (hot and cold), medications, stroke, and the patient relationship with PCP's and specialists.

The guys have been looking forward to this one for a while. They sit down with Dr. Sarah Lee, a maternal fetal medicine physician. She specializes in high risk OB and provided an fascinating interview. Yet again, all parties lost track of time during the the course of the interview - they had that much fun.
She has an incredible background and is an absolute expert in the field of high risk OB. Both John and Garrett could not imagine the stress of a high risk pregnancy, and Dr. Lee had a calming presence as she discussed topics ranging from genetics, nutrition, the maternal instinct, fertility, obesity, nutrition, etc. Her passion is absolutely magnetic.
They also explored some of the ethics in the high risk delivery/OB world which is rarely, if ever broached and definitely worth the listen to really explore all aspects of this incredible service line.

Today's episode is extremely entertaining. The guys sit down with Dr. Jothi Murali and she has a gift when it comes to podcasting. Not shy of the mic, she and the guys discuss sports medicine, pediatrics & pediatric ortho, trauma, and a few other fun rabbit holes (platelet rich plasma, being an entrepreneur, etc.). Definitely high marks for education and laughter with a few serious points as well.

Cardiology, the history of cardiology, stents, ECMO, bypass, ablations, heart failure, quality control, LVADS, transplants and several other completely fascinating rabbit holes regarding the ol' ticker. They waited a bit to dip their toe in the cardiology waters and the wait was completely worth it! It is a great high-level overview, and also goes in-depth at just the right moments.
